Valorization of Winery By-Products as Bio-Fillers for Biopolymer-Based Composites.

Grape seeds (GS), wine lees (WL), and grape pomace (GP) are common winery by-products, used as bio-fillers in this research with two distinct biopolymer matrices-poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and polybutylene succinate (PBS)-to create fully bio-based composite materials. Each composite included at least 30 v% bio-filler, with a sample reaching 40 v%, as we sought to determine a composition that could be economically and environmentally effective as a substitute for a pure biopolymer matrix. The compounding process employed a twin-screw extruder followed by an injection molding procedure to fabricate the specimens. An acetylation treatment assessed the specimen's efficacy in enhancing matrix-bio-filler affinity, particularly for WL and GS. The fabricated bio-composites underwent an accurate characterization, revealing no alteration in thermal properties after compounding with bio-fillers. Moreover, hygroscopic measurements indicated increased water-affinity in bio-composites compared to neat biopolymer, most significantly with GP, which exhibited a 7-fold increase. Both tensile and dynamic mechanical tests demonstrated that bio-fillers not only preserved, but significantly enhanced, the stiffness of the neat biopolymer across all samples. In this regard, the most promising results were achieved with the PBAT and acetylated GS sample, showing a 162% relative increase in Young's modulus, and the PBS and WL sample, which exhibited the highest absolute values of Young's modulus and storage modulus, even at high temperatures. These findings underscore the scientific importance of exploring the interaction between bio-fillers derived from winery by-products and three different biopolymer matrices, showcasing their potential for sustainable material development, and advancing polymer science and bio-sourced material processing. From a practical standpoint, the study highlighted the tangible benefits of using by-product bio-fillers, including cost savings, waste reduction, and environmental advantages, thus paving the way for greener and more economically viable material production practices.

Properties and environmental sustainability of fungal chitin nanofibril reinforced cellulose acetate films and nanofiber mats by solution blow spinning

Materials from biological origin composed by renewable carbon facilitate the transition from linear carbon-intensive economy to a sustainable circular economy. Accordingly, we use solution blow spinning to develop fully biobased cellulose acetate films and nanofiber mats reinforced with fungal chitin nanofibrils (ChNFs), an emerging bio-colloid with lower carbon footprint compared to crustacean-derived nanochitin. This study incorporates fungal ChNFs into spinning processes for the first time. ChNF addition reduces film surface roughness, modifies film water affinity, and tailors the nanofiber diameter of the mats. The covalently bonded β-D-glucans of ChNFs act as a binder to improve the interfacial properties and consequently load transference to enhance the mechanical properties. Accordingly, the Young's modulus of the films increases from 200 ± 18 MPa to 359 ± 99 MPa with 1.5 wt% ChNFs, while the elongation at break increases by ~45 %. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is applied to quantify the environmental impacts of solution blow spinning for the first time, providing global warming potential values of 69.7–347.4 kg·CO2-equiv.·kg−1. Additionally, this work highlights the suitability of ChNFs as reinforcing fillers during spinning and proves the reinforcing effect of mushroom-derived chitin in bio-based films, opening alternatives for sustainable materials development beyond nanocelluloses in the near future.

Synthesis of Wrinkled MoS2 Thin Films Using a Two-Step Method Consisting of Magnetron Sputtering and Sulfurization in a Confined Space

Considering the increasing need for sustainable and economical energy storage solutions, the integration of layered materials such as MoS2 into these systems represents an important step toward enhancing energy sustainability and efficiency. Exploring environmentally responsible fabrication techniques, this study assesses wrinkled MoS2 thin films synthesized from distinct Mo and MoS2 targets, followed by sulfurization conducted in a graphite box. We utilized magnetron sputtering to deposit precursor Mo and MoS2 films on Si substrates, achieving thicknesses below 20 nm. This novel approach decreases sulfur by up to tenfold during sulfurization due to the confined space technique, contributing also to avoiding the formation of toxic gases such as SO2 or the necessity of using H2S, aligning with sustainable materials development. Thinner MoS2 layers were obtained post-sulfurization from the MoS2 precursors, as shown by X-ray reflectometry. Raman spectroscopy and grazing X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed the amorphous nature of the as-deposited films. Post-sulfurization, both types of films exhibited crystalline hexagonal MoS2 phases, with the sulfurized Mo showing a polycrystalline nature with a (100) orientation and sulfurized MoS2 displaying a (00L) preferred orientation. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results supported a Mo:S ratio of 1:2 on the surface of the films obtained using the MoS2 precursor films, confirming the stoichiometry obtained by means of energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images revealed micrometer-sized clusters potentially formed during rapid cooling post-sulfurization, with an increased average roughness. These results open the way for the further exploration of wrinkled MoS2 thin films in advanced energy storage technologies.

Nano clay treated jute fiber reinforced epoxy composites: Thermo‐kinetic, morphological and mechanical analysis

AbstractCurrent scientific research prioritizes sustainable and cost‐effective materials due to the depletion of traditional non‐renewable sources. Natural fiber reinforced composite materials emerge as promising solutions. However natural fibers being hydrophilic in nature are less compatible with hydrophobic epoxy matrix, to address this issue nano clay treatment of jute fibers have been done and epoxy composites were formed with their reinforcement. Through FT‐IR, thermal, mechanical, and morphological analyses, both treated and untreated composites are evaluated. The treated composites exhibit a notable 19% increase in activation energy (FWO and KAS methods) compared to untreated ones (217.5–259 KJ/mol), indicating improved thermal stability. Moreover, the treated composite demonstrates a significant 38% boost in tensile strength (30–41.4 MPa) and a 28% enhancement in flexural strength (50–64 MPa), highlighting the impact of alkali‐nano clay treatment in reinforcing structural integrity. These enhancements suggest the potential applicability of composites manufactured with alkali‐nano clay treated jute fibers (A/NC/J fiber) across various industries. This innovative approach not only bridges the gap in sustainable material development but also offers cost‐effective solutions for commercial utilization.Highlights Analyzed alkali‐nano clay treatment effects on jute fiber in epoxy composites. Enhancing physical characteristics and antibacterial efficacy of chitosan through investigation of microwave-assisted chemically formulated chitosan-coated ZnO and chitosan/ZnO physical composite

This study investigates the creation and analysis of chitosan-zinc oxide (CS-ZnO) nanocomposites, exploring their effectiveness in inhibiting bacteria. Two synthesis approaches, physical and chemical, were utilized. The CS-ZnO nanocomposites demonstrated strong antibacterial properties, especially against Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium. Chemically synthesized nanocomposites (CZ10 and CZ100) exhibited larger inhibition zones (16.4 mm and 18.7 mm) compared to physically prepared CS-Z5 and CS-Z20 (12.2 mm and 13.8 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus. Moreover, CZ nanocomposites displayed enhanced thermal stability, with decomposition temperatures of 281°C and 290°C, surpassing CS-Z5 and CS-Z20 (260°C and 258°C). The residual mass percentages at 800°C were significantly higher for CZ10 and CZ100 (58% and 61%) than for CS-Z5 and CS-Z20 (36% and 34%). UV–Visible spectroscopy revealed reduced band gaps in the CS-ZnO nanocomposites, indicating improved light absorption. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed uniform dispersion of ZnO nanoparticles within the chitosan matrix. In conclusion, this research underscores the impressive antimicrobial potential of CS-ZnO nanocomposites, especially against Gram-positive bacteria, and highlights their enhanced thermal stability. These findings hold promise for diverse applications in industries such as medicine, pharmaceuticals, and materials science, contributing to the development of sustainable materials with robust antimicrobial properties.

Physical and mechanical properties of mycelium-based fiberboards

Mycelium-based fiberboards were evaluated as potential environmentally friendly substitutes for conventional wood-based composites. The goal of this study was to produce and test fiberboards out of yellow pine and poplar fiber mixtures without using any extra adhesive. Pleurotus ostreatus and Ganoderma lucidum fungi were used. The physical and mechanical characteristics of the fiberboards were tested under the influence of two different types of fungi and two different incubation periods. The key findings indicated that the mycelium-based fiberboards had higher water absorption and thickness swelling percentages compared to control boards produced with adhesives. The fiberboards produced from fibers inoculated with Ganoderma lucidum and incubated for 30 days had higher mechanical properties compared to other test fiberboards. This indicated the possibility of utilizing them in specific applications. Although the mycelium-based fiberboards did not fully meet all the EN 622-5 (2009) standard requirements for dry-condition use, the results highlighted their potential in sustainable material development. This study provided useful insights into the utilization of mycelium for the development of mycelium-based fiberboards.

Valorization of Cork Stoppers, Coffee-Grounds and Walnut Shells in the Development and Characterization of Pectin-Based Composite Films: Physical, Barrier, Antioxidant, Genotoxic, and Biodegradation Properties.

The development of sustainable materials from the valorization of waste is a good alternative to reducing the negative environmental impact of plastic packaging. The objectives of this study were to develop and characterize pectin-based composite films incorporated with cork or cork with either coffee grounds or walnut shells, as well as to test the films' genotoxicity, antioxidant properties, and biodegradation capacity in soil and seawater. The addition of cork, coffee grounds, or walnut shells modified the films' characteristics. The results showed that those films were thicker (0.487 ± 0.014 mm to 0.572 ± 0.014 mm), more opaque (around 100%), darker (L* = 25.30 ± 0.78 to 33.93 ± 0.84), and had a higher total phenolic content (3.17 ± 0.01 mg GA/g to 4.24 ± 0.02 mg GA/g). On the other hand, the films incorporated only with cork showed higher values of elongation at break (32.24 ± 1.88% to 36.30 ± 3.25%) but lower tensile strength (0.91 ± 0.19 MPa to 1.09 ± 0.08 MPa). All the films presented more heterogeneous and rougher microstructures than the pectin film. This study also revealed that the developed films do not contain DNA-reactive substances and that they are biodegradable in soil and seawater. These positive properties could subsequently make the developed films an interesting eco-friendly food packaging solution that contributes to the valorization of organic waste and by-products, thus promoting the circular economy and reducing the environmental impact of plastic materials.

Tough rosin-based reversibly crosslinked elastomers with anticorrosion and adhesion properties

Conventional polymer materials cannot repair hidden cracks that appear during use by themselves, which affects service life and reliability. The reversibility of dynamic covalent bonds provides an effective approach for the sustainable development of materials. In this study, we introduced rosin, a renewable resource, and dimethylglyoxime with an oxime bond into polyurethane elastomers to prepare tough, self-healing rosin-based crosslinked elastomers. Benefiting from their high crosslinking density, the prepared elastomers exhibit excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength up to 13.6 ± 0.5 MPa and toughness up to 21.3 ± 0.6 MJ m–3) and solvent resistance. Based on the dynamic reversibility of oxime–carbamate bonds, the elastomers exhibit excellent self-healing properties (97.2 ± 1.1 % self-healing efficiency for 3 h at 80 °C). Furthermore, the elastomers exhibit good adhesion and corrosion resistance. Notably, the addition of rosin improves the elastomers' hydrophobicity and heat resistance in addition to their mechanical properties. These findings suggest that the prepared self-healing rosin-based elastomers have promising applications in self-healing anticorrosive coatings and adhesives.

Influence of bio-based kenaf polymer composites on mechanical and acoustic properties for futuristic applications: An initiative towards net-zero carbon emissions

In the pursuit of net-zero carbon emissions, the development of sustainable materials like kenaf fiber composites is pivotal. This innovative approach, which harnesses eco-friendly properties and enhances material performance, holds promise in reducing carbon footprints across diverse industries. As ecological sustainability awareness continues to rise, there is a growing imperative to embrace biodegradable, lightweight, and recyclable materials to address existing limitations in conventional materials. Kenaf fiber, with its unique electromagnetic, acoustic, mechanical, and physical properties, presents a compelling solution. The production process involves impregnating kenaf fiber with bio-based materials, utilizing nanofillers of nickel (Ni), bamboo charcoal (BC), and carbon black (CB), which are blended with epoxy resin through magnetic agitation to ensure homogeneous dispersion. This resulting composite is fortified between two layers of kenaf fiber mats, creating a robust sandwich structure. Employing response surface methodology (RSM) and the central composite design (CCD), the study calculates the optimal weight percentages of nanofillers in various test specimens. Mechanical and acoustic property testing, conducted using appropriate equipment, reveals that a combination of 15 wt% BC, 9 wt% Ni, and 6 wt% CB exhibits the highest tensile strength at 42 MPa, while the blend of 10 wt% BC, 6 wt% Ni, and 4 wt% CB achieves a maximum noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of 0.524. These impressive findings underscore the potential of this suggested material as a superior substitute for conventional materials, further aligning it with the imperative for eco-conscious and sustainable solutions.

Effect of Operational Variables on Supercritical Foaming of Caffeic Acid-Loaded Poly(lactic acid)/Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) Blends for the Development of Sustainable Materials.

Expanded polystyrene will account for 5.3% of total global plastic production in 2021 and is widely used for food packaging due to its excellent moisture resistance and thermal insulation. However, some of these packages are often used only once before being discarded, generating large amounts of environmentally harmful plastic waste. A very attractive alternative to the conventional methods used for polymer processing is the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) since it has mass-transfer properties adapted to the foam morphology, generating different path lengths for the diffusion of active compounds within its structure and can dissolve a wide range of organic molecules under supercritical conditions. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of operational variables on the process of caffeic acid (CA) impregnation and subsequent foaming of polylactic acid (PLA) as well as two PLA/poly(butylene-co-terephthalate-adipate) (PBAT) blends using scCO2. The results showed an increase in the degree of crystallinity of the CA-impregnated samples due to the nucleation effect of the active compound. On the other hand, SEM micrographs of both films and foams showed significant differences due to the presence of PBAT and its low miscibility with PLA. Finally, the results obtained in this work contribute to the knowledge of the important parameters to consider for the implementation of the impregnation and foaming process of PLA and PLA/PBAT blends with potential use in food packaging.

Assessment of hygrothermal performance of raw earth envelope at overall building scale

Environmental challenges in the building sector have made raw earth a significant ecological alternative. The development of sustainable materials and a clear understanding of their behaviour are essential for sustainable construction. This work aims to respond to this societal issue.This investigation uses a HAM-BES cosimulation methodology that integrates dynamic thermal simulation code (TRNSYS) with a hygrothermal transfer model developed by Luikov and solved by Comsol Multiphysics. The study aims to investigate the energy needs of different building envelopes in several climates where there is raw-earth architecture. A comparison between a cob monolayer envelope and a polystyrene insulated polystyrene insulated brick multilayer envelope has been carried out. This study shows that the raw earth monolayer wall has a higher energy need for oceanic and tropical climate with, respectively, 14 and 19%. A decrease in demand has been found for the desert climate. Moreover, it was shown that the coupling of heat and mass transfers results in a notable reduction in energy demand that can reach 11.5% annually and up to 23% quarterly for tropical climate. These findings highlight the efficiency of raw earth materials and stress the importance of thoroughly understanding and incorporating heat and mass transfer dynamics in the evaluation of sustainability for biobased and earth-based construction materials.

Manufacturing supported loose-nanofiltration polymeric membranes with eco-friendly solvents on an R2R System

In this study, loose nanofiltration membranes made of polysulfone dissolved in co-solvents PolarClean and gamma-Valerolactone were prepared via slot die coating (SDC) on a roll-to-roll (R2R) system by directly coating them onto a support layer or free standing. A solution flow rate of 20 mL/min, substrate speed of 17.1 mm/s, and coating gap of 0.1 mm resulted in the formation of membranes without structural defects. Pre-wetting the support layer with dope solution minimized shrinkage of membrane layer thickness and improved interfacial adhesion. Membrane samples produced using SDC exhibited properties and performance consistent with bench-scale doctor blade extruded samples; pre-wetted and uncompressed samples (SDC-3) exhibited the highest rejection of bovine serum albumin (99.20% ± 1.31%) and along with adequate mean permeability during filtration (70.5 ± 8.33 LMH/bar). This study shows that combining sustainable materials development with SDC provides a holistic approach to membrane separations to bridge materials discovery and membrane formation.

Industrial dye effluent degradation and in-vitro biological characteristics of MgO NPs anchored few layered g-C3N4 nanoribbons

In recent years, contaminated water consumption by humans and animals are lead to various types of diseases and environmental pollutant. Especially textile dye effluents are the highest contaminants in water bodies than any other industries. This article reports a green process for synthesizing MgO nanoparticles supported by the exfoliated g-C3N4 nano composites for dye effluent treatment. The cubic and hexagonal phase structure was achieved for synthesized MgO NPs and E-GCN, respectively, with spherical and curled ribbon-like morphology. The specific surface area was measured as 70.48, 54.22, and 79.11 m2/g, respectively, for MgO NPs, E-GCN, and MgO/E-GCN nanocomposite. Similarly, corresponding optical properties were achieved with an energy gap of 3.42, 2.48, and 2.78 eV. XPS analysis confirms the formation of MgO/E-GCN nanocomposite by detecting their characteristic elemental peaks. The bioactivities including antibacterial, turbidimetric, and antioxidant efficacy, were also investigated. Thus, the MgO/E-GCN nanocomposites was exhibitd greater susceptibility against pathogenic bacteria due to its production of high reactive oxygen species. Further, the catalysts were used to degrade cationic dye (Crystal Violet) and anionic dye (Eosin Yellow) under sunlight exposure. The photocatalytic efficiency of MgO/E-GCN nanocomposite was highly influenced towards CV (98.9 %) and EY (97.33 %) dye degradation, because of its high surface area with active UV–Visible region. Therefore, the combination of naturally inspired MgO NPs and morphologically modified E-GCN nanocomposites are being a sustainable material development for environmental remediation and biological applications.

Hybrid chips to enable a sustainable internet of things technology: opportunities and challenges

AbstractA new technological approach is needed for the development of emerging electronic components and systems within the Internet of Things (IoT) era. New advancements and innovations are required in architectural design and hybrid systems heterogeneous integration to address the challenge of widespread IoT deployment, its power demands and sustainability. Hybrid chips are one of the emerging technologies that can help overcome the current limitations in terms of energy consumption, performance and sustainability that could shape the future of electronic systems for targeted applications. Hybrid chips combine different materials and manufacturing technologies on the same substrate or package using advanced flexible heterogeneous integration techniques, with the focus of merging the advantages of each unit or technology toward enhanced performance and new levels of emerging functionalities. The categorization of hybrid chips spans across rigid hybrid chips that follow a multi-chiplet approach, semi-flexible chips that integrate flexible units with semi-rigid ones such as thinned silicon integrated circuits, and lastly, flexible chips in which all components are inherently flexible. This perspective article analyzes technical challenges that arise concerning the development of sustainable materials and processing technologies, complex heterogeneous integration, as well as advanced packaging architectures, standardization, and reliability testing. The economic implications for the semiconductor technology transition to hybrid chips is presented in terms of manufacturing costs, economic feasibility, and market readiness. Key insights and future application opportunities are provided, while recent advancements in the field are summarized. This perspective article suggests that by addressing these challenges, hybrid chips have the potential to transform electronic components and systems across a wide range of industries and use case scenario. The advancement of hybrid chip technologies by enhancing the collaboration between industry and academia as well as policymakers will be a crucial part in the realization of required sustainability goals within the worldwide Chips Act initiative, while ensuring the technological progress has the right balance between improved performance and sustainability.

Towards sustainable and ecofriendly polymer composite materials from bast fibers: a systematic review

Abstract This systematic review focuses on the exploration and advancement of sustainable and eco-friendly polymer composite materials derived from bast fibers. Bast fibers, obtained from the phloem of certain plants like flax, hemp, jute, and kenaf, represent a renewable and environmentally benign resource. Their integration into polymer based composites has gained significant attention due to the growing environmental concerns and the need for sustainable material development. The importance of this study lies in its comprehensive examination of bast fibers as viable alternatives to the synthetic fibers in polymer composite materials. By harnessing the natural strength, light weight, and biodegradability of bast fibers, this review contributes to the creation of materials that are not only environmentally sustainable but also possess enhanced mechanical properties suitable for various industrial and domestic applications.

Dynamic tensile properties of flax fiber reinforced polymer composites

Flax fibers have been widely used as reinforcing materials due to the growing demand for the development of sustainable materials. They are cost-effective and have excellent mechanical properties. In this study, the dynamic tensile properties of flax FRP coupons were tested using an Instron VHS high rate testing system. The effect of strain rate on the failure process, failure modes, tensile strength, failure strain, and Young’s modulus of flax FRP coupons were discussed and analyzed within the strain rate less than 164.2 s−1. The failure process at different strain rates were captured by a high-speed camera. It was observed that the specimen failed with only one cross-sectional fracture at a relatively low strain rate. At a relatively high strain rate, more than one fracture was observed. The experimental results indicated that the dynamic tensile strength increased, failure strain decreased, and Young’s modulus remained almost unchanged when the strain rate was less than 41.3 s−1. As it was over 41.3 s−1, the dynamic tensile strength, failure strain, and Young’s modulus had a prominent rise. To describe the dynamic tensile strength, failure strain, and Young’s modulus at a certain strain rate, empirical equations based on the experimental data were proposed for reference.

Enzymatic hydrolysis lignin and kraft lignin from birch wood: a source of functional bio-based materials

In the pursuit of sustainable biomass utilization, this study investigates the hydrothermal treatment of birchwood and its subsequent impact on enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL). Additionally, birchwood undergoes processing with NaOH (4% w/w) within a Parr reactor to precipitate lignin from the black liquor, resulting in lignin-rich substrates (LRSs) which are then subject to thorough characterization. Notably, EHL produced after hydrothermal pretreatment at 190 °C exhibits the highest lignin content at 67%, while kraft lignin (KL) obtained at 140 °C (pH 1.5) produces 65% lignin content. Among these LRSs, the KL sample produced at 190 °C (pH 4) stands out, displaying a robust aromatic skeletal structure and an abundance of methoxyl groups, primarily owing to its high purity. Furthermore, for these LRSs' it is shown that chemical configuration influences their thermal behaviour, allowing the lignin to be tailored for diverse applications, from low melting point materials to carbonaceous materials capable of withstanding temperatures exceeding 700 °C. This comprehensive understanding of the chemical, thermal, and physical attributes of LRSs not only enriches our knowledge of lignin-rich substrates but also paves the way for the development of sustainable bio-based materials, marking a step towards sustainable materials development.

Design, Preparation, and Characterization of Polycaprolactone–Chitosan Nanofibers via Electrospinning Techniques for Efficient Methylene Blue Removal from Aqueous Solutions

The effective removal of organic dyes from aqueous solutions is of paramount importance in addressing environmental pollution challenges. Methylene blue (MB), a prevalent cationic dye in various industries, has raised concerns due to its persistence and potential adverse effects on ecosystems. This study explores the design, preparation, and characterization of Polycaprolactone–Chitosan (PCL–CH) nanofibers via electrospinning for the removal of MB. PCL, known for its biodegradability and mechanical properties, serves as the primary matrix, while chitosan (CH), with its biocompatibility and amino functionalities, offers enhanced adsorption potential. The electrospinning process yields nanofibers with tailored compositions and controlled morphology. The synthesized nanofibers are systematically characterized, encompassing structural analysis by Fourier transform infrared (FT–IR), spectroscopy, morphology, and composition assessment via Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), zeta potential, as well as rheological behavior evaluation. The adsorption uptake of MB onto these nanofibers is investigated, considering the influence of solution pH and initial dye concentration. The results reveal significant enhancements in adsorption capacity, especially with the incorporation of CH, with the PCL–CH 30% nanofibers exhibiting outstanding performance. The pH-dependent behavior underscores the importance of environmental factors in the adsorption process, while higher dye concentrations provide a stronger driving force for adsorption. These findings position PCL–CH nanofibers as promising adsorbents for the efficient removal of MB and potentially other organic contaminants from aqueous solutions. The study contributes to the development of sustainable materials for environmental remediation, wastewater treatment, and related applications, aligning with ongoing efforts to address water pollution challenges.

From Soy Waste to Bioplastics: Industrial Proof of Concept.

The global plastic waste problem is pushing for the development of sustainable alternatives, encouraged by stringent regulations combined with increased environmental consciousness. In response, this study presents an industrial-scale proof of concept to produce self-standing, transparent, and flexible bioplastic films, offering a possible solution to plastic pollution and resource valorization. We achieve this by combining amyloid fibrils self-assembled from food waste with methylcellulose and glycerol. Specifically, soy whey and okara, two pivotal protein-rich byproducts of tofu manufacturing, emerge as sustainable and versatile precursors for amyloid fibril formation and bioplastic development. An exhaustive industrial-scale feasibility study involving the transformation of 500 L of soy whey into ∼1 km (27 kg) of bioplastic films underscores the potential of this technology. To extend the practicality of our approach, we further processed a running kilometer of film at the industrial scale into transparent windows for paper-based packaging. The mechanical properties and the water interactions of the novel film are tested and compared with those of commercially used plastic films. By pioneering the large-scale production of biodegradable bioplastics sourced from food byproducts, this work not only simultaneously addresses the dual challenges of plastic pollution and food waste but also practically demonstrates the feasibility of biopolymeric building block valorization for the development of sustainable materials in real-world scenarios.

Environmental benchmarks for the European cement industry

The urgent need to address climate change has pushed Europe to the forefront of environmental legislation initiatives, such as the Environment Action Program (EAP) within the European Green Deal and the disclosure of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in the construction sector. The cement industry plays a vital role in this transition because it is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. EPDs have managed to articulate the environmental information flow across different stakeholders, allowing them to incorporate sustainability design practices at the manufacturing, construction, and design levels. However, current EPDs are deterministically disclosed and lack benchmarks, hindering effective comparison and impeding sustainable material development. To address this challenge, the present research introduces a novel Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)-based probabilistic analysis to develop clinker and cement benchmarks. The proposed method incorporates data from industry reports, environmental databases, and EPDs, to generate the stochastic benchmarks. Moreover, a wide range of environmental performance indicators at a national level in Europe are covered, offering a holistic perspective beyond climate change. The results highlight the benefits of using country-specific environmental benchmarks, reducing the standard deviation of results by 2 to 7 times compared to background datasets. The reduction of clinker content proved to reduce 7 to 9 kg CO2eq/t for every 1% reduction in all countries. However, it also increased other indicators depending on the mineral component used as a replacement, underscoring the need for holistic analysis. The research also exposes discrepancies between EPDs and industry-related data, accentuating the need for stochastic information disclosure to enhance reliability and facilitate decision-making by stakeholders. Another significant contribution of this research is the development of an extensive open-access database, providing a reference for future developments regarding sustainable cement and concrete.
