Evaluation of sustainable manufacturing performance – A case illustration with multistakeholder perspective

Increasing awareness on achieving the targets of sustainable development goals led to the various discussions on sustainability in manufacturing applications. Sustainable manufacturing has been considered as one of the key factors for achieving sustainable consumption and production. Considering the advantages, sustainable manufacturing has been discussed with various perspectives in order to improve the sustainable manufacturing performances. This study considers one of the perspectives where other studies are limited within the context of sustainable manufacturing performances, multi-stakeholder perspectives. The sustainable manufacturing performances has been collected and evaluated with multi criteria decision making methodology, best worst method. The three multi stakeholder perspectives have been considered for this study which includes manufacturer perspective, customer perspective and government perspective. The collected sustainable manufacturing performances were evaluated based on these different multi-stakeholder perspectives, in order to understand the similarities and differences among multiple stakeholders in the implementation of sustainable manufacturing through its performances. The detailed discussion of obtained results was explored and acknowledged with existing literature support along with the response from case industrial managers. The similarities and differences of opinion among different stakeholders has been explored to provide fruitful contributions to both academic and scientific community. The key managerial implication of this study is that assisting the industrial managers to focus on influential sustainable manufacturing performances instead of focussing less influential ones based on the opinions of different stakeholders.

Sustainable Lean Six-sigma: A new framework for improve sustainable manufacturing performance

Sustainable Manufacturing is essential in supporting a more sustainable production process in the current era. However, continuous improvement research that utilizes Manufacturing Sustainability Index (MSI) scores in improving Sustainable Manufacturing performance is still limited. Therefore, this study aims to propose a new framework for evaluating Manufacturing Sustainability based on lean Six Sigma and Sustainable Manufacturing concepts using Sustainable Value Stream Mapping (Sus-VSM). We call this new framework Sustainable Lean Six-sigma (SLSS) based on the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) approach. The SIPOC diagram and the Delphi method are used in the Define stage to select relevant indicators. Then, the selected indicators were evaluated in the Measure stage, and the Manufacturing Sustainability Index (MSI) was calculated. At the Analyze stage, the Sus-VSM is analyzed. At the Improve stage, improvement proposals are made using Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA), and a future Sus-VSM is created. Finally, in the Control stage, check sheets are created to control the implementation of the proposed improvements. In the DMAIC process, Sus-VSM is used as a production flow mapping using a traffic light system to map indicators in each process and MSI values on the production line. A case study was also conducted on the Agro-Food Industry. The results showed that the proposed framework could be implemented in the company and successfully improved the Manufacturing Sustainability Index (MSI) score from 88.78% to 93.80%. The implication of this research shows the potential of using the SLSS framework in improving manufacturing sustainability performance in industrial sectors.

An Integrated method for manufacturing Sustainability assessment in tire industry: a case study in Indonesian

ABSTRACT This study presents a novel approach for evaluating the performance of sustainable manufacturing by integrating the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) concept. The research incorporates various novel metrics, including machine performance, physical load, and mental load. Additionally, the evaluation of sustainable manufacturing takes into account the workload assigned to each workstation in the production process. This research utilizes the Delphi approach, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), Sustainable Value Stream Mapping (SVSM), and Traffic Light System (TLS). The Delphi method is employed to assess pertinent indicators. Meanwhile, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is utilized to evaluate the importance of the TBL and workstation indicators. The SVSM and TLS techniques were employed to chart the TBL indicators. The Manufacturing Sustainability Index (MSI) scores were computed using indicators, workstation weights, and indicator efficiency. Additionally, a case study is provided on the tire sector in Indonesia. The tire industry's MSI findings showed a performance score of 85.52%, signifying the need for improvement in performance. The findings of this study have research implications as they contribute to the advancement of theory in evaluating sustainable manufacturing performance. Furthermore, this study offers managerial recommendations for the tire business to enhance sustainable production performance.

Analyzing the integrated effect of circular economy, Lean Six Sigma, and Industry 4.0 on sustainable manufacturing performance from a practice‐based view perspective

AbstractThis study explores the interplay linking Lean Six Sigma (LSS), the Circular Economy (CE) and Industry 4.0 technologies (I4.0T), and their impact alone or combined, on sustainable organizational performance (SOP) within manufacturing firms. Using the existing literature, six hypotheses are identified and then analyzed following the Structural Equation Modeling method with SmartPLS software. A survey was designed and administrated in the Moroccan context. Based on the results, it was found that LSS, CE and I4.0T have a positive effect on SOP. Moreover, I4.0T significantly impacts both LSS and SOP. However, I4.0T had no significant effect on CE. Furthermore, the results show that LSS has a positive mediation role as a driver for the successful implementation of I4.0T within the SOP. This study will enable manufacturing professionals to understand the determinants of sustainable performance helping them to define their future business strategies. Also, it sets the benchmark for companies looking to achieve sustainable objectives by integrating I4.0 technologies into CE practices and the LSS approach. This study is a first attempt to examine the link between LSS, CE and I4.0 to achieve high triple bottom line gains (environmental, social and economic) within companies considering Morocco, an emerging economy.

Determinants of employee psychological ownership and its impact on sustainable manufacturing performance

This study aims to examine the determinants of employee psychological ownership and its effect on sustainable manufacturing performance. The population in this study is employees of a cigarette company in Indonesia. The sample used is 100 respondents, consisting of workers, supervisors, front line managers, and senior managers of a large cigarette company in Indonesia who are involved in initiative programs to achieve sustainable manufacturing performance. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling. Data collection is carried out by distributing questionnaires directly to respondents and conducting focus group discussions (FGDs). The analytical tool used is Partial Least Squares with SmartPLS version 3. The results show that Servant Leadership has a significant effect on Growth Mindset and Capability Building; Growth Mindset and Capability Building have a significant effect on Employee Psychological Ownership; and Employee Psychological Ownership has a significant effect on Sustainable Manufacturing Performance. Therefore, to achieve sustainable manufacturing performance, it is necessary to have a strong employee psychological ownership by forming a mindset to always grow, accompanied by increasing individual capabilities through effective servant leadership.

Influence of knowledge management enablers and processes on a sustainable manufacturing performance in Nigeria

The research objective is to investigate the impact of knowledge management (KM) enablers and processes on the performance of Nigeria’s manufacturing sector. The poor performance in Nigeria’s public and private sectors has been linked to insufficient or non-existent KM implementation methods. Survey questionnaires were distributed to the members of Manufacturing Association of Nigeria. Of the 500 survey questionnaires distributed, 424 were returned correctly completed representing about 84% response rate. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and multi-regression analysis. The results show that KM enablers variables (management leadership, information technology, infrastructure, and organizational culture) and KM process variables significantly contribute to manufacturing performance except for knowledge application. The research adds to the general knowledge by shedding more light on the impact of KM enablers and processes<i> </i>for<i> </i>sustainable manufacturing from an African perspective<b>.</b> Also, it provides academic support for investing more resources in sustainable KM-based manufacturing in Nigeria.

Sustainable Performance Measurement in Manufacturing Process of Textile Industry by using Analytical Hierarchy Process

Sustainable manufacturing practices in textile industry have become a crucial topic for managers of manufacturing organizations to remain competitive in the market. The textile sector is well known for consuming a large amount of natural resources, raw materials, energy, and fossil fuels, and for being a significant contributor to pollution. Evaluating sustainability performance of textile manufacturing companies is therefore important. To address this, a study has developed an Analytical hierarchy process (AHP)-based model for assessing sustainable manufacturing performance. The study identifies performance measures for sustainable manufacturing based on economic, environmental, social, and technical factors, and confirms their relevance through a survey. The findings demonstrate that all measures are extremely important and are suggested as key performance measures for textile sector. Then, AHP is used to evaluate sustainable manufacturing performance based on these measures, results in quality and employee ranking as highest critical factors, and complexity and flexibility as least important. The study offers hierarchical model for evaluating sustainability performance of five case organizations, providing guidance for production managers to assess strengths and weaknesses of their organizations. These findings encourage researchers and practitioners to study more about sustainability evaluation.

Sustainability performance of digitalized manufacturing industry in COVID era: a comparative study between developed and developing economies

PurposeThe study aims to identify the extent to which industry 4.0 (IR4.0) adoption impacts the sustainable manufacturing (SM) performance of the manufacturing industry, focusing on the comparative analysis between developed and developing economies amid coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.Design/methodology/approachThe study proposes a conceptual model formed on seminal theories and literature using the cross-sectional design. For data collection, a purposive sampling method is used where 154 Malaysian (developing) and Australian (developed) manufacturing firms' data were collected. Partial least square-based structural equation modeling is employed to test the hypothesis and proposed research model.FindingsThis study finds that adoption of IR4.0 technologies does not directly influence the sustainability performance of the manufacturing industry, but rather the trajectories of SM (efficiency, flexibility, automation and big data and granularity) fully mediate the relationship between IR4.0 adoption and sustainability manufacturing performance. The comparative analysis between Australia and Malaysia shows no significant difference in the relationships or the framework; hence, the differences between developed and developing countries are not significant in this mechanism.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the insights of the managers regarding COVID-19 and the implementation of IR4.0 in the SM domain. The policymakers would further get better insights since the study pays attention to sustainable development goal, industry, innovation, infrastructure and responsible production.

Approach to Analyse Sustainable Manufacturing Performance at the Production Line and Plant level

The next step in the evolution of manufacturing will be the implementation of flexible, scalable systems that produce a product in the most favorable environment using the best available tools, techniques, and resources to achieve significant cost savings, increased productivity, and long-term benefits. Through a review of relevant literature and a series of case studies, this study assessed the efficiency of sustainable manufacturing at the plant and line levels.The study's basis was the influence of economic, social, and environmental aspects on manufacturing sustainability. Discussions on the fundamental approaches for analysing the performance of sustainable manufacturing at various production levels had taken place throughout the research. This study also extensively analysed the approaches currently used to analyse sustainable manufacturing performance, and it explored and examined the challenges encountered. These approaches are addressed in this study through a case study of a recycle-friendly automotive aluminium alloy business and production of carbonated bottled drinks. The framework is then used to suggest a thorough set of approaches for analysing sustainable manufacturing at the plant and production line levels.

Metric-based approach to assess sustainable manufacturing performance at manufacturing process levels

ABSTRACT As new technologies have been changing the production scenario, sustainable production practices stand out as possible solutions to harmonise industrial activities and biodiversity conservation for the benefit of humanity. In this context, a proposal based on the concepts of the Triple Bottom Line for evaluating sustainability index will be presented in order to fill in some gaps in the literature on models for evaluating sustainability indices. The methodological approach consists of developing sustainability indicators (KPI) which has been the basis for measuring the sustainability index. To verify the applicability of this model, two companies which apply metallic coating on rolls of sugar cane mills were assessed. According to the results, it was possible to measure the sustainability level of each KPI, of the pillars and the general sustainability index. The proposal stands out from other models because it allows: a) assessment of each stage of the production process, b) application flexibility regardless of the type of the process, c) measurement flexibility according to the companies’ needs, d) ease and speed of execution on the factory floor, e) possibility of computerisation.

The OASIS-Sustainable Nanomanufacturing Framework (OASIS-SNF): a new simplified approach to implement sustainable production in nanomanufacturing pilot lines and evaluate its sustainable manufacturing performance

The pilot production ecosystem deployed by the EU-project OASIS consists of 12 pilot lines (PLs) for the manufacture of nanomaterials, nano-intermediates and nano-enabled products, intended for the final production of lightweight multifunctional products, based on aluminium and polymer composites, for construction, energy, automotive and aeronautics. OASIS intends to deploy this nanomanufacturing ecosystem under a common umbrella of sustainable production, to ensure a future competitive, quality, safe and environmentally friendly production of nanoproducts, in compliance with the applicable regulation. This paper introduces the new OASIS-Sustainable Nanomanufaturing Framework (OASIS-SNF) and some first results obtained during the initial stages of deployment in the PLs (diagnostic and planning stages). The adoption of the OASIS-SNF among the OASIS PLs is intended to enable them to sustainable manufacturing their nanoproducts, properly manage their sustainability priorities, and continually improve their sustainability performance (management and results).

Towards the Development of Digital Manufacturing Ecosystems for Sustainable Performance: Learning from the Past Two Decades of Research

Although the Internet of Things (IoT), advanced manufacturing technologies, and cloud manufacturing contribute to developing a digital manufacturing ecosystem that enhances energy efficiency and resource utilization, manufacturing processes are vulnerable to timely production and delivery. The digital manufacturing systems in Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) minimized the human-technology interactions to foster productivity and material flow. However, there is scarce research to gauge the efficiency of these digital technologies in the entire manufacturing process; also, little is known about the collaborative efforts among countries to achieve sustainable manufacturing performance through the digitalization of the production process. Thus, this systematic review aimed to highlight the effectiveness of the digital manufacturing systems for sustainable product development and the collaborative research on the subject. We selected 52 research articles for this review by following the 2015 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA) statement. The literature classifications were developed using text frequency algorithms in VOSviewer (Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden University, The Netherlands) Results exposed literature from 2005 to 2020 can be categorized into four major research streams: digital transformation, digital manufacturing ecosystem, performance management, and sustainability. The study’s findings revealed that the manufacturing processes are moving towards the IoT, digital devices, and smart factories that are entirely dependent on digital technologies. The digital manufacturing ecosystem is dependent on the availability of digital technologies to all stakeholders. The study concluded that digital technologies are improving manufacturing efficiency and process effectiveness. However, this requires infrastructure that primarily available in developed countries; thus, the digital transformation in underdeveloped regions is deliberate and requires more collaborative research.

Structural model of lean and cleaner production on manufacturing sustainability performance: Malaysian manufacturers' perspectives

In terms of practices, the implementation of Lean and Cleaner Production shared a common focus, aiming to enhance the degree of management efficiency, while reducing the barriers in continuous improvement activities. This positively produced an enormous impact on the performance in economic, environmental, and social competency, while improving the level of sustainable manufacturing performance. Using survey data from 107 respondents consists of Malaysian manufacturers, this study empirically focuses to explore and examine the relationships between Lean and Cleaner Production with manufacturing sustainability performance via the Structural Equation Modelling-Partial Least Square technique. The results have shown that the implementation of Lean and Cleaner Production produced a significant positive effect on economic and competency sustainability performance. Although the relationship between Lean and Cleaner Production with environmental sustainability performance is not significant, thru well-intentioned impulses, manufacturing firms could grasp the opportunities in improving the performance of economic, enhancing the social competency, and grasp better environmentally friendly practices.

Industry 4.0 for sustainable manufacturing: Opportunities at the product, process, and system levels

Limited resource availability and the negative environmental and societal impacts of traditional manufacturing have motivated the need for sustainable manufacturing. Product, process, and system integration, considering the interdependent sustainability impacts, is vital for sustainable manufacturing. Industry 4.0 and its constituent technologies offer significant potential to advance manufacturing competitiveness. Can the implementation of more sustainable manufacturing practices be facilitated or enhanced by using Industry 4.0 technologies? Current literature fall short in comprehensively addressing this question. Most treat either Industry 4.0 as a single technology, or sustainable manufacturing very broadly, without an in-depth consideration of the impacts on products, processes, and systems. To address this gap, this paper presents a comparative analysis examining individual Industry 4.0 technologies and their potential impact on sustainable manufacturing. A framework based on product, process, and systems sustainability metrics clusters is applied to examine these impacts. The findings reveal that literature is still limited in identifying opportunities for sustainability improvement at the different levels using Industry 4.0 technologies; the impact on many criteria related to product, process, or system level sustainability due to Industry 4.0 technologies have not yet been examined. The comparative analysis, and other literature, are used to provide further directions for future research and opportunities on leveraging Industry 4.0 technologies for more sustainable manufacturing. The implications for industry by way of offering a framework to identify potential solutions to enhance sustainable manufacturing performance using Industry 4.0 technologies are also discussed.

Classifications of Sustainable Manufacturing Practices in ASEAN Region: A Systematic Review and Bibliometric Analysis of the Past Decade of Research

This paper aimed to map the existing sustainable manufacturing literature to explore and classify existing practices to highlight the potential prospect of and obstacles to achieving manufacturing sustainability in countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This paper systematically reviews the research on sustainable manufacturing in the ASEAN region from 2011 to 2020. We used the PRISMA framework for systematic literature, and 118 research articles specific to the ASEAN region were identified through a structured keyword search in Web of Science, SCOPUS, ProQuest, and other databases. After a careful screening process, only 115 records were found appropriate to be included for review in the current study. The results revealed three significant sets of manufacturing practices that are widely used for sustainable manufacturing. These are sustainable product development, sustainable manufacturing performance, and environmental assessment and monitoring. Furthermore, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of the literature to highlight ASEAN countries’ collaborative efforts to achieve sustainability in manufacturing. The findings indicate that most of the earlier work on sustainable manufacturing focused on environmental assessment practices rather than providing holistic industrial engineering solutions. We recommend that the efforts focus on hybrid processes to establish sustainable manufacturing procedures in ASEAN member countries. Holistic solutions through industrial processing integration need to be developed to provide broader industrial solutions to protect the environment and society from the adverse effects of the manufacturing process with economic efficiency.

Ranking of implementation dimensions for maintenance practices in Northern Indian SMEs using integrated AHP-TOPSIS approach

Maintenance practices have been undeniably established as an integral part of an organization and become major facilitators for realizing efficient production systems. The maintenance function must ensure that the production system should always operate at rated capacity. Maintenance practices assume crucial role in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) because SMEs are backbone to efficient and smooth operation of large industries. The present study uses an integrated Analytical Hierarchy process (AHP) and Technique for Order Preference by similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) approach to evaluate the characteristics of effective maintenance practice implementation in Northern Indian SMEs. AHP approach has been deployed to calculate the weights, which serves as a primary input to TOPSIS for prioritizing the implementation dimensions for the successful implementation of maintenance practices. The present study has highlighted that maintenance implementation dimensions, Corrective Maintenance, General Maintenance, Preventive Maintenance, Predictive Maintenance and Breakdown Maintenance, have been observed to be the most significant factors for realizing sustainable manufacturing performance in Northern Indian SMEs. The significant implementation dimensions outlined in this study should be adopted by top management and concentrated on as crucial areas to ensure the successful implementation of maintenance practices in manufacturing organizations.

Competitive Priorities, Employee Management and Development and Sustainable Manufacturing Performance in Asian Organizations

This study investigates the relationships between three dimensions of competitive priorities (customer focus, product innovation and delivery) and how Asian manufacturers manage and develop their employees and the consequent effect on sustainable manufacturing performance. Three dimensions of manufacturing performance are considered in this study—quality performance, production flexibility and operations cost. This study uses 259 datasets collected from manufacturers in four Asian countries. Structural equation modeling and mediation analysis are performed to test the relationships. Results show that there is a significant positive and mediating relationship between the competitive priority of product innovation, employee management and development, quality performance, production flexibility and operation cost. However, such significant relationships do not exist with competitive priorities of customer focus and delivery. Organizations are constantly faced with the problem of determining which competitive priorities to focus on. However, different competitive priorities have different effects on how the employees are managed and developed, and ultimately, on organizational performance and competitiveness. There is a need to focus on innovation-led strategies that relate to sustainable outcomes. This is one of the first studies in Asia to understand the multilateral relationships between different competitive priorities and different performance dimensions when employee management and development intermediate.

Sustainable manufacturing practices and performance of the Nigerian table water industry: a structural equation modeling approach

PurposeThis study empirically examined and investigated the relationship between sustainable manufacturing practices (SMPs) and performance of table water industry (TWI) in Nigeria.Design/methodology/approachCross-sectional survey research design was adopted for this study. The population of this study covers all the registered table water firms in Delta and Edo states by National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Convenience sampling, a nonprobability sampling method, was used in administering the questionnaire to selected table water firms in the two states used for the study. The sample can be considered as experimental group used for the research and analysis. Data collected through questionnaire administration were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used in estimating the research models, through the use of Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS version 24) software.FindingsThe study found that SMPs are adopted by table water firms registered by NAFDAC. It was also found that sustainable packaging and waste management significantly influence the different dimensions of sustainable performance of table water firms.Practical implicationsThe study recommends that table water producers should ensure they consistently adhere to NAFDAC standards after product registration and certification to make the products safe for consumption. Also, NAFDAC should promote a regulatory environment with appropriate incentives to table water firms that consistently comply with stipulated regulations that can promote the sustainability of the environment while any table water firms found engaging in unwholesome activities that can undermine the health status of consumers should be severely sanctioned.Originality/valueThe study provides a comprehensive analysis of sustainability practices in the Nigerian TWI by examining four manufacturing practices and how they impact on sustainability performance of the industry. The study will help to reinforce the need for stakeholders in the TWI to be more environmentally conscious.

Sustainable and Smart Manufacturing: An Integrated Approach

The necessity for decreasing the negative impact of the manufacturing industry has recently increased. This is getting recognized as a global challenge due to the rapid increase in life quality standards, demand, and the decrease in available resources. Thus, manufacturing, as a core of the product provision system and a fundamental pillar of civilized existence, is significantly influenced by sustainability issues. Furthermore, current manufacturing modeling and assessment criteria require intensive revisions and upgrades to keep up with these new challenges. Nearly all current manufacturing models are based on the old paradigm, which was proven to be inadequate. Therefore, manufacturing technology, along with culture and economy, are held responsible for providing new tools and opportunities for building novel resolutions towards a sustainable manufacturing concept. One of such tools is sustainability assessment measures. Revising and updating such tools is a core responsibility of the manufacturing sector to efficiently evaluate and enhance sustainable manufacturing performance. These measures should be adequate to respond to the growing sustainability concerns in pursuit of an integrated sustainability concept. The triple bottom line (TBL) that includes environment, economic, and social dimensions has usually been used to evaluate sustainability. However, there is a lack of standard sets of sustainable manufacturing performance measures. In addition to the sustainability concept, a new concept of smart manufacturing is emerging. The smart manufacturing concept takes advantage of the recent technological leap in Artificial Intelligent (AI), Cloud Computing (CC), and the Internet of Things (IoT). Although this concept offers an important step to boost the current production capabilities to meet the growing need, it is still not clear whether the two concepts of smart manufacturing and sustainability will constructively or destructively interact. Therefore, the current study aims to integrate the sustainable smart manufacturing performance by incorporating sustainable manufacturing measures and discussing current and future challenges that are faced by the manufacturing sector. In addition, the opportunities for future research incorporating sustainable smart manufacturing are also presented.

The relationship between sustainable manufacturing practices, lean improvement and performance

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between sustainable manufacturing practices, lean improvement, and performance in Malaysian automotive industry by using structural equation modelling technique. Survey questionnaires were used among 227 managers in Malaysian automotive industry. SEM technique was used to test the statistical analysis of the data required in the study. Based on the results, sustaining lean improvement is part of a mediating relationship between sustainable manufacturing practices and performance which is positive results. For this purpose, it assists academicians and researchers for sustainable manufacturing practices implementation in order to assist the automotive industry to increase lean improvement and performance.
