Agriculture and Climate Change: A Socio-Economic Dynamics of Climate-Smart Practices in Oubritenga Province, Burkina Faso

The issue of farmers' resilience to climate and natural resource degradation remains a major concern in Sahelian countries, including Burkina Faso. The aim of this study is to analyze the dynamics of farming practices in the province of Oubritenga in Burkina Faso, highlighting similarities and differences in climate-smart practices. To do this, a mixed method (qualitative and quantitative) was used, combining surveys, individual interviews and focus groups. The results indicate that these practices were disseminated and adopted in Oubritenga province well before the 1980s, and that they have evolved in terms of adoption rates and improvements in recent years through research. The practices mentioned include sustainable land management (SLM), water and soil conservation practices/soil defense and restoration (WSC/SDR). Rural households are responding by adopting and reinforcing climate-smart farming practices that are considered more sustainable in the face of climate shock, soil degradation and greenhouse gas mitigation. It should be noted that other agricultural practices and techniques have been disseminated and adopted over time, in connection with mechanization and the promotion of technical production itineraries. This is a body of endogenous knowledge that coexists with technical production itineraries aimed at respecting the balance between nature and the well-being of living beings by integrating a sustainable land and environmental management system.

Evaluation of land suitability for soybean production using GIS-based multi-criteria approach in Kudan Local Government area of Kaduna State Nigeria

The demand for food production in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, such as poverty eradication and food security and nutrition in developing countries like Nigeria has led to intensive agriculture, resulting in decreased soil quality and environmental challenges. To address these issues, land suitability evaluation plays a crucial role in designing sustainable land use and management systems. This evaluation provides valuable insights for farmers and policymakers to optimize soybean production, enhance crop yield, and promote sustainable agricultural development. The research covers 39,057 ha (ha) and it considers multiple criteria such as soil properties, slope, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and land use/land cover (LULC) of the study area. Soil data and land use/land cover information were obtained and processed using geostatistical techniques and interpolation methods in ArcGIS. An Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was employed to determine the overall importance of the evaluation criteria. This study revealed that 14.14% of the area falls into the moderately suitable class, a significant proportion (83.77%) of the area is marginally suitable for growing soybean, and the remaining proportion (2.09%) is deemed unsuitable. Drainage condition was identified as one of the major limiting factors for soybean cultivation in the region. Management practices such as drainage construction, organic residue incorporation, and appropriate fertilizer application were suggested to improve land suitability. The outcome of this study has shown that integrating RS and GIS techniques in land suitability assessment facilitates evidence-based decision-making and supports effective land use planning for increased agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability.

The Potential of Agroforestry to Overcome Agricultural Land Degradation in the Dieng Plateau, Central Java, Indonesia

Most of the Dieng Plateau area in Central Java, Indonesia, is a stretch of agricultural land in the upper watershed whose sustainability is threatened. The degradation of agricultural land, which affects the surrounding area and the area beneath it, is an old problem that still needs to be resolved. Agroforestry has been promoted as a sustainable land management system with various benefits and advantages. However, data and information regarding its potential to overcome the degradation of agricultural land in the highlands still need to be provided. Our integrative review found that the benefits and advantages of agroforestry to reduce erosion rates and increase land fertility have the most potential to overcome the various impacts of agricultural land degradation in the Dieng Plateau. Adopting agroforestry deserves to be one of the main strategies to overcome the degradation of agricultural land in the highlands, not only in the Dieng Plateau but also in other highlands worldwide.

Agroecological and agroforestry strategies to improve organic hibiscus productivity in an Indigenous non-governmental organization from Mexico

Abstract La Montaña region, in southern Mexico, is characterized as a highly human-modified landscape with a rough topography, extreme poverty and structural violence. In this region, Xuajin Me'Phaa, an Indigenous non-governmental organization conformed by ca. 300 peasants, implements productive restoration projects and trades organic hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) as its main monetary income. Nonetheless currently, organic hibiscus yield is low compared to the potential yields in the region. Thus, it is necessary to explore alternative sustainable land management systems which enable farmers to increase hibiscus crop productivity, while halting land degradation. This study assessed the impact of six different agroecological fertilization protocols (AFPs) on hibiscus productivity planted in an alley cropping system with Calliandra houstoniana trees. The AFPs were based on the combination of three local plant amendments: C. houstoniana mulch, Mucuna pruiriens var. utilis green manure and hibiscus stover, and a commercial bio-fertilizer (Azospirillum + Rhizophagus). Simultaneously, the performance of C. houstoniana trees was assessed. The AFPs were applied in the alley cropping system and evaluated from 2016 to 2018. After 3 years, in the AFPs which included C. houstoniana mulch, hibiscus yielded significantly more (419 ± 27 kg dry calyxes ha−1 in average) than AFPs which did not include this species (264 ± 15 kg ha−1). The 18-month-old C. houstoniana trees yielded 0.6 t ha−1 of dry biomass and 1.12 t ha−1 of wooden stakes, a relatively low production. In conclusion, our results show that alley cropping with a denser arrangement of C. houstoniana trees in combination with mulching of this tree species, and use of mucuna green manure represent a promising agroforestry system for organic hibiscus production.

Balinese Traditional Agroforestry as Base of Watershed Conservation

Forests, traditional gardens and green spaces play an important role in regulating the water flow of an area. Along with the high demand for land in Bali for agriculture and tourism, many forest areas have been converted into hotels and settlements. Forest conversion has caused many problems such as erosion, soil fertility decreased, flora fauna extinction, floods, drought, global warming and the disturbing watershed, especially rivers for springs. The purpose of this study is the development of watershed conservation in Bali based on traditional agroforestry. The method that used is vegetation analysis. Calculation of the erosion amount using the USLE formula. Sampling was done by ten plots. The results showed that traditional agroforestry vegetation consisted of vertical and horizontal structures. The characteristic of traditional agroforestry is that dominant plants are distributed irregularly, thus creating a miniature structure like a forest. The vertical structure consists of trees, horizontal structure filled with species of garden plants and agriculture. Trees have roots spread intensively in the soil and reduce nutrient leaching. Land cover by vegetation protects the soil and erosion. The agroforestry has a role as an act of soil and water conservation. Traditional agroforestry land cover has a relatively low C coefficient (0.05-0.25) compared to other lands. The level of erosion hazard is low and moderate. Average erosion value of 55.01 t.ha-1.yr-1. This indicates that traditional agroforestry makes the soil have a higher ability to absorb water, thereby reducing surface runoff. Likewise, organic material that improves the water content capacity. In addition, water quality can be improved through the humus filter function. During a long dry season, there is a drought due to low rainfall, but rivers and springs were able to supply water for the peoples daily needs. This condition occurs because of the tree retentions in traditional gardens. Conservation actions need to be taken, namely maintaining trees vegetation, increasing reforestation, bench terraces use, mounds and mulch use. This condition also places traditional agroforestry as a sustainable land management system.

The Strategies of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) With Global Environmental Facility (GEF) To Promote Sustainable Land Management

International organizations playing a important role in overcoming various issues in the World. Based on this case UNDP is determined to assist every country in carrying out sustainable development, in this case Environmental Issues have a greater impact on the continuity of human security. This happens based on the basis of 2 things, which are the act of human activity itself or from natural changes. One of the environmental issues that are often faced in every countries is land degradation, this environmental issue is also experienced by Kenya as a country from the East African continent where many of the people depend on livelihoods from the agricultural sector especially Argo-Pastoral. The cases of land degradation with the variations state of the land type give socio-economic impacts for the people and communities whose livelihoods depend on the land. The existence of an international organization which is UNDP as a means to help environmental issue in Kenya land degradation by applying a sustainable land management system. In this study the author will conduct a study with the aim of analyzing the strategy of the International Organization, which UNDP in applying a sustainable land management system in cases of land degradation so that it can provide results for the production system of the Argo-Pastoral. This research is taken from the UNDP and GEF projects that have been ongoing from 2011-2016 with the name Mainstreaming Sustainable Land Management in Argo-Pastoral Production System of Kenya

Using Google Earth Engine to classify unique forest and agroforest classes using a mix of Sentinel 2a spectral data and topographical features: a Sri Lanka case study

Global land cover classifications may lead to the loss of important local and national nuances such as forest and agroforestry classes. These classes are important to local contexts because they contribute to sustainable land management systems. This paper demonstrates the application of Sentinel-2A satellite images, elevation data, and the Google Earth Engine platform to generate more detailed, specialist land cover classification for forestry classes important in Sri Lanka deriving ten spectral, 16 textural, and three topographical features from the input datasets. The random forest classification model discriminates vegetation types as forest, forest plantations, shrub, grassland, home garden, and cultivation with an overall accuracy of 94% and kappa value of 0.91. Results indicate the elevation feature contributes the most to discriminate forest and agroforestry classes, and red band (664.6 nm) textural metrics derived from grey-level co-occurrence matrix analysis are more useful for separating the home garden from other land cover classes.

Land Abandonment in Mountain Areas of the EU: An Inevitable Side Effect of Farming Modernization and Neglected Threat to Sustainable Land Use

In a period of rising concern for sustainable land management systems to achieve food security at a global scale, land-use changes demand increased attention. This study assesses the past observations and future risk calculations for land abandonment across European regions, highlighting the particular risk for mountain areas. It draws from a study commissioned by the European Parliament to investigate the situation and probability for high and very high risk of land abandonment until 2030. Revealing that land abandonment is at three times higher risk in mountain areas than in non-mountain areas, the need for action to cope with this pressure is the core result. We reveal that the high disparity in agricultural competitiveness between regions (at fine geographical scale) is the main driving force leading to the spatially uneven performance of land management. Viewing this wide set of drivers and mitigation options, land abandonment is understood as the outcome of a multitude of factors of socio-ecological systems and a combination of farm-specific, internal regional and trans-regional factors. The present dominance of narratives of effectiveness leaves little scope for mountain regions under threat of abandonment and marginalization. In this situation, policy reform would address the issue but this might turn out to be influential only if the complex nature and trade-off of the comprehensive policy framework are prioritized.

The Role of Urban Land Management on the Informal Settlements

The research deals with the concept of the Informal settlements, as they are unauthorized subdivisions of lands in the urban environment that start with a sudden invasion on the lands of others without legal capacity, for a specific group of individuals, where they reside their houses, without official permission from the owner They are located in city centers or urban vacancies. So the paper aims to build a comprehensive theoretical framework for solving and addressing the problem of Informal settlements through the Programs and strategies of the urban land management system. The problems of the Informal settlements (security of tenure, ownership issues, increased demand for shelter, violation of the scheme of land use, basic services) are the main issues and tasks of urban land management. The research defines urban land management as the responsible authority in the urban sector that has the responsibility to solve and address obstacles that prevent achieving urban development aims, including these obstacles (informal settlements, housing, and infrastructure services). The research problem was represented by The lack of a clear perception of the role of urban land management programs and strategies in solving and addressing the problem of the Informal Settlements, while the research hypothesis was that Solving and addressing the problem of Informal Settlements is through the programs and strategies of the urban land management system, which is represented by the formal urban land management programs for informal settlements, a sustainable urban land management system and urban land management development in varying proportions. The paper built a theoretical framework for solving and addressing the problem of Informal settlements through the Programs and strategies of the urban land management system. The research concluded that The importance of programs and strategies for each of (formal urban land management approach, sustainable urban land management system, decentralized urban land management system and urban land management development), including (securing tenure for informal settlement dwellers, developing informal settlement areas and converting them into formal areas, providing basic infrastructure services, developing Participatory approaches between the public and private sectors, community participation, recognition of the right to decent housing), in solving and addressing the problem of informal settlements, albeit partially, which contributes to reducing or limiting the resort to informal settlements and thus their gradual disappearance.

Bacterial communities as indicators of soil health under a continuous cropping system

AbstractWith growing global interest in the improvement of soil quality and the adoption of sustainable land management systems, there is an urgent need to find early indicators to monitor and manage sustainable soil health. Meta‐analyses provide useful information on microbial communities and community‐level molecular characteristics, which can be exploited as ‘biomarker’ indicators of ecosystem processes for soil health evaluation. Lanzhou lily (Lilium davidii var. unicolor) is the only type of sweet edible lily in China, as well as an endemic species with a narrow distribution. Due to its uses as food and in gardening, this lily has an economic value in the Country, particularly in Gansu Province located in the Loess Plateau. This lily is usually cultivated in long‐term continuous monoculture (replanting), resulting in the so‐called consecutive replanting problem (CRP), which is associated with severe soil degradation and significant yield and quality losses. This study was conducted to investigate the bacterial community structure and specific bacterial members related to the lily's CRPs and soil health degradation indicators via next‐generation sequence (NGS) analysis. The bacterial diversity of rhizosphere soil was analyzed by high‐throughput DNA sequencing (Miseq) of samples collected in fields at 0, 3, 6, and 9 replanting years (L0, L3, L6, and L9, respectively). Results showed that long‐term replanting significantly increased soil bacterial abundance and insignificantly changed soil bacterial diversity. However, replanting altered the soil microbial communities where 3–6 years of replanting was a transmission period for change, resulting in a new community structure after 9 years of replanting. Some specific bacterial members were found to be correlated with lily's plant growth, both positively and negatively. Long‐term replanting accumulation of the harbored highly abundant pathogenic bacterial genus Streptomyces and the species Bacillus simplex and depletion of the plant‐beneficial bacteria genera Sphingomonas and Hyphomicrobium are the causes of the lily's CRP under a 0–9 year replanting system. In addition, changes in the soil physiochemical properties contributed to the new structure of bacterial communities, and the phylum Proteobacteria and the genus Sphingomonas could be regarded as potential indicators of sustainable soil management.

Livelihood Improvement of Farmers through Agroforestry Practices in Teesta and Jamuna River Basins

Agroforestry is one of the most sustainable land management systems practiced around the world due to the socioeconomic benefits to farmers. In Bangladesh, farmers practice agroforestry, applying indigenous knowledge. The objectives of the study are to explore the dominant agroforestry systems and species preferred by and to assess the socio-economic impact of agroforestry technologies on their livelihoods of farmers of the Char dwellers in Jamuna and Teesta river basins. The study was conducted at four Char Upazillas such as Kazipur, Shariakandi, Kaunia and Dimla. A total 120 farmers were surveyed during the research period using structured questionnaire with both open and closed ended questions. The majority of the respondents (56.67%) having low score in adoption of traditional agroforestry practices. Most of the farmers (94.17%) in Teesta and Jamuna river basins are practicing traditional homestead agroforestry system. The most frequent strategy was boundary tree plantation (44.17%) followed by scattered tree plantation technique on composite planting system, and the alley of cropland. A total of 41 tree species are abundant in Char areas of Teesta and Januna basins. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) is widely adaptable in Bangladesh including Char areas followed by Mango (Mangifera indica) in homestead besides, Mahagony (Swietenia mahagoni) is another abundant species planted in croplands boundaries of Char areas along with Akashmoni (Acacia auriculiformis). The farmers mentioned different problems they were facing in practicing agroforestry but ‘shade cast by trees’ was the major problem. Majority farmers of Char areas plant trees in homestead for fruits (63.33%) and in cropland for fuel wood (95.83%) and timber production (82.50%). Farmers’ livelihoods improved enormously by practicing agroforestry as they have more access to food, fodder and fuel wood which is reflected by greater access to livelihood capitals except social capital. However, the farmers have experienced increased incidences of pests and diseases to annual crops and trees. Agroforestry practices increases species diversity, ensure economic return and sustain farmers’ livelihoods. The respondents, local leaders and experts suggested the constrains of adopting agroforestry in Char areas are lack of awareness, education, technical skills, capital, technical assistance, interest, marketing and transportation facilities at the study areas . The government should initiate some agroforestry focused projects, especially in the Char areas for the capacity building of the farmers and equip them with the new farming techniques through trainings and orientation workshops. The farmers should be provided scientific guidance about suitable tree species grown on agricultural land with field crops, their silvicultural operations and tree management practices along with free services and inputs including seeds, seedlings and loan schemes for promoting agroforestry.

Assessment of Farmer’s Perception and Adoption of Agroforestry Practices: The Case of Assosa District, Western Ethiopia

Agroforestry is a sustainable land management system which integrate production of crops, forest trees and animals at the same time on the same unit of land and put on management practices that are friendly with local population. Population growth and continuous use of agricultural land are the major causes of soil fertility reduction in rural Ethiopia and also in the study area. Existing land suitable for agriculture or crop production, grazing or forestry is decreasing while human populations are gradually increasing. As the population continues to grow, the gap between supply and demand for agricultural land continues to expand. Such a situation is leading to severe land use conflicts between the crop production and other type of land use such condition leading to reduction of 4 agroforestry practice. Despite this, one of the solutions to meet diverse people’s requirement with fixed land is through the application of agroforestry which is more advantageous than mono cropping. Agroforestry practices play important role so in order to strengthen and make the existing practice effective. This study was conducted to assess adoption of agroforestry practices in assosa woreda. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that most of the sampled house hold heads 89 (64.5%) are not practicing agroforestry technology in the study area. Some of the major Agroforesty practices that have been commonly implemented include alley cropping, homegardens, and tree on crop land. The attitude of farmers towards agroforestry practice is positive and is well understood that agroforestry increase farm income, soil fertility, decreased complete crop failure and helping resolving fuel wood demands. Agroforestry technologies are not very well practiced so far in Assosa destrict due to different reasons. The government and other concerned organization should try to reduce the independent factors that affect adoption of agroforestry practice significantly through providing the necessary materials and creating awareness to farmers.

KEANEKARAGAMAN SPESIES DALAM SISTEM AGROFORESTRI DI DESA SURAJAYA KECAMATAN PEMALANG KABUPATEN PEMALANG JAWA TENGAH

Agroforestry is sustainable land management system which integrate the yields of crops including trees and forest plants to increase the yields.This research intend to knowing the diversity type of vegetation in Desa Surajaya, Pemalang, Jawa Tengah. The research use exploration method by exploring all the research site and take the sample using purposive sampling method. The research done by exploring all the forest area and take a note for every new kind of vegetation. Research result shown that there are 19 kind of different vegetation, which is divided by a horticulture and non-horticulture. Forest land cleared for agriculture by agroforestry was 287,89 Ha or as much as 19,4% of the total forest area leaving 1.193,41 Ha of teak forest area.

Economic and financial sustainability of an Acacia decurrens-based Taungya system for farmers in the Upper Blue Nile Basin, Ethiopia

The use of tree-based fallowing as a sustainable land management system may serve as an important developmental pathway out of poverty across drought-prone watersheds in the Upper Blue Nile Basin, Ethiopia. This study employs a financial analysis technique, the computation of net present values, to explore the financial viability of farmers’ investments in an intercropping farming system known as taungya. The analysis employs scenarios that include different farming systems, such as A. decurrens (J.C. Wendl.) Willd. cum teff (Eragrostis tef) intercropping, A. decurrens monocropping, and teff monocropping, as well as changes in output (charcoal and teff) prices and the discount rate. In addition, the time of sale is evaluated in terms of the distribution of profits between buyers and sellers and between sharecroppers and landowners. The intercropping practice (A. decurrens cum teff in the first year) tended to be more profitable than the alternative systems. Financially constrained farmers who have to sell their stands early, however, forego gains. Profits from stand sales later in the 5-year evaluation period were more equally shared between sellers and buyers. Sharecropping profits for farmers ranked among the lowest of the computed profits. A sensitivity analysis revealed that an increase in the discount rate tends to have a more detrimental effect than price fluctuations on the profitability of acacia-based taungya systems, although sharp price fluctuations could affect profitability and cause a farmer to shift back to an annual crop system. Despite their higher profitability, tree-based systems impose a risk of liquidity bottlenecks on farmers throughout the 5-year investment period, which implies that those who are endowed with land or who are more financially well-off can benefit from the required 5-year investment, but it may be more difficult for those who lack land or the necessary financial resources. Providing affordable financing for poorer and landless farmers could increase farmers’ use of the taungya system and allow a more equitable distribution of benefits among the rural population.

FORMALIZING A MULTI-DIMENSIONAL LAND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM: THE STAKEHOLDERS' PERSPECTIVE

Abstract. It is expected that by the year 2050, 66% of the world’s population will live in urban areas, necessitating the efficient management of land and urban space, namely the requirement for multi-dimensional land management systems (MLMS). In most countries, current LMS are two dimensional, representing the reality on a plane. This research aims at outlying guidelines designed for augmenting existing 2D LMS to multi-dimensional ones, by investigating theoretical (conceptual) and technical inferences related to the adding of the height dimension, the time dimension and the scale dimension (scale dimension may also refer to levels of details). Sustainable multi-purpose land management systems for serving various end-users is essential, therefore, our study is based on a Delphi questionnaire, which aims at understanding the perspective of diverse stakeholders and experts who may use LMS, as well as mapping their requirements and expectations from the LMS. Questions were categorized into two groups: i) theoretical, focusing on semantic and mathematical definitions; and, ii) technical, focusing on functionalities, databases, data collection, etc. As a preliminary assessment, responses of eight experts, from different fields and countries, to the questionnaire were analysed and summarized. The results are presented in this paper, including the main issues that experts pointed out, as well as suggested classes, fields, procedures and functionalities that might be required from a multi-purpose MLMS.

GIS and multi-criteria decision-making analysis assessment of land suitability for rapeseed farming in calcareous soils of semi-arid regions

Abstract To reverse the negative environmental properties effect on fertile lands for agriculture, land suitability evaluation is the first step in the designing the most sustainable land use and management systems. The aim of the present study was to develop and evaluate a land suitability model for rapeseed farming using topography factors, soil data and remote sensing data in calcareous soils of semi-arid regions northwestern Iran. For this purpose, stratified random sampling was used to select a set of 92 soil samples of agricultural land use from 0 to 30 cm depth. For land suitability assessment, the opinions of 19 local experts were used to make a decision for the weight of topography, soil data and remote sensing data factors by an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) from multi-criteria analysis. The input data including climate, topography, soil and remote sensing data were included that are related to rapeseed production. The results indicate the highest specific weight belongs to the soil texture (0.341), calcium carbonate equivalent (0.171) and elevation (0.114), respectively. Land suitability evaluation based on the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization classification system indicated that 0.81% (420.8 ha) of the studied area was for high suitable (S1), 42.33% (21940.2 ha) was for moderately suitable (S2) and 11.78% (6104 ha) was for marginally suitable (S3) class. The 39.72% (20586.4) and 0.95% (492.1 ha) of studied area were located as currently not-suitable and permanently not-suitable for rapeseed productions, respectively.

Factors Influencing Land Degradation in the Billate Water shade: The Case of Dimtu and Shelo Sub Water shade, Southern Ethiopia

The economic growth of developing countries depends on the performance of the agricultural sector which in turn depends on how the natural resources are managed. Agriculture in Ethiopia is hindered by many factors among which land degradation in the form of soil erosion and nutrient depletion plays major role. Land degradation resulting from soil erosion and nutrient depletion is one of the most challenging environmental problems in Ethiopia. It has economic loss (food, pasture, and fuel wood) at household level. Billate is particular water shade found in the southern Ethiopia which faces similar problems. The study was to analyze factors influencing land degradation by examining the degree of land degradation, by identifying the factors influencing land degradation at plot level and by assessing management techniques applied in the billate water shade in the case of Dimtu and Shelo sub water shades, Southern Ethiopia. Both primary and secondary data were collected. Primary data were collected from 92 sampled households. Binary logit model analysis was used to determine factors affecting land degradation. The results revealed that only 10.9% of the sample households’ plots were undegraded and 89.1%, degraded with different degrees (slightly degraded, moderately degraded and severely degraded). The model results reveal that seven explanatory variables, education, plot ownership, livestock holding, family size, slope, and market distance from the residence were found to be statistically significance in affecting degradation at less than 10% probability level. The Billate Water shade is one of highly degraded areas with different degrees of land degradation (slightly degraded, moderately degraded and severely degraded). Understanding some of factors that determine land degradation of the area would contribute to devise appropriate strategies to achieve the desired change in SWC measures and to alleviate damages of land degradation in the study area. Sustainable land management systems must be developed to reduce further degradation and restore the productivity of the eroded land. Thus selecting strategies and intervention areas need to be given due attention in the near future. Theoretical and methodological foundations for formation of sustainable land management system

The article is devoted to the formation of a system of sustainable land management, economic reforms in Russia largely depend on the level of development of land relations and the use of land resources. This is due to the fact that the land, in addition to its traditional properties (means of production, territorial basis, natural body, etc.), has become the object of legal relations and real estate. That is why the particular relevance for today is the building of a certain system of land management, which has an impact on the development of the economy of the state as a whole. The article describes theoretical and methodological approaches to the formation of a management system.

Archaeonics - (Geo)archaeological studies in Anthropogenic Dark Earths (ADE) as an example for future-oriented studies of the past

This review paper examines the potential of (geo)archaeological data of past human-environment systems to contribute to the development of sustainable land use and soil management strategies. Looking at past land use systems and their socio-economic background extends our understanding of the slow processes and low frequency events that appear to be the key in deciding whether land use systems lead to sustainability or to collapse. As an example, the paper focuses on so-called Anthropogenic Dark Earths (ADE). These highly fertile soils were managed or actively created by ancient cultures in different regions of the world. Since they are rich in humic matter and carbon, and are highly stable to biochemical oxidation, they appear very relevant both as a model for sustainable soil and land management systems and as a tool for climate change mitigation on different scales - local as well as global. The paper argues in favor of a historical perspective to learn about risks and possibilities of land use strategies. We propose a co-adaptive transdisciplinary problem-solving approach ("Archaeonics"), which includes the study of the past as well as respective technical and social implications for the future.
