The research employs a qualitative literature review methodology, examining a broad range of academic articles, technical reports, and case studies related to smart materials, sustainable engineering, and IoT applications. The literature review methodology involves systematically collecting and analyzing relevant scholarly sources to identify key trends and insights. The study categorizes the literature into major themes, such as the properties and applications of smart materials, the principles and benefits of sustainable engineering, and the impact of IoT integration on engineering processes. By synthesizing findings from diverse sources, the research provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements and challenges associated with these technologies. The findings reveal that smart materials, such as shape-memory alloys, piezoelectric materials, and self-healing composites, offer significant potential for enhancing the functionality and durability of engineering systems. Sustainable engineering practices, including the use of renewable materials and energy-efficient designs, are critical for reducing environmental impact and promoting long-term sustainability. IoT integration enables real-time monitoring, data-driven decision-making, and improved system efficiency, thus transforming traditional engineering approaches.

Developments in biochar incorporated geopolymers and alkali activated materials: A systematic literature review

Annually, industries related to agricultural products generate substantial volumes of waste biomass, presenting critical challenges for solid waste management due to its environmental and health implications. Pyrolysis emerges as a significant technique for converting such waste into biochar (BC), a material with notable internal microstructure, porosity, and chemical properties, contingent on the feedstock and processing conditions. BC is recognized for its exceptional water retention and alkalinity, primarily utilized for soil enhancement and fertilization. Its application across various fields, particularly in enhancement for sustainability, has gained momentum. This review meticulously explores BC's role in sustainable composites, focusing on geopolymers and alkali-activated binders through a comprehensive examination of existing literature, underscored by bibliometric analysis. This pioneering review, leveraging the PRISMA framework and VOSviewer for bibliometric insights, aims to bridge the research gap in this evolving domain, offering a critical assessment of BC's integration in sustainable construction materials, its challenges, and future research directions. Hence, this pioneering systematic review represents the first-ever exploration within the research domain of BC's applications in geopolymers and alkali-activated materials, marking a foundational step toward understanding its potential and challenges in sustainable engineering practices.

Exploring Engineering Philosophy from an Epistemological Perspective

This study explores engineering philosophy from an epistemological perspective, aiming to improve students' critical thinking skills, foster interdisciplinary understanding, promote ethical reflection, and deepen engagement with the philosophical foundations of technology. The study uses a comparative analysis and critical review of the literature on the philosophy of engineering. The results are as follows: First, the essence of engineering knowledge lies in practical application, problem-solving orientation, and interdisciplinary integration. Second, epistemological methods in engineering emphasize the importance of balancing intuition and analysis, critical thinking, rigorous experimental design, and verification and validation processes. Third, while experience and expertise are certainly crucial in shaping engineering knowledge, it is necessary to critically examine the potential biases and limitations inherent in this process. Fourth, the epistemological challenges of interdisciplinary engineering necessitate humility, open-mindedness, and interdisciplinary integration. Finally, the ethical and social dimensions of engineering knowledge are essential considerations for responsible and sustainable engineering practices. Integrating ethical reflection into decision-making and embracing social responsibility and community involvement can enable engineers to contribute to social advancement while upholding professional integrity and ethical standards. Future research suggestions include conducting a meta-epistemological analysis to study the fundamental assumptions, methodologies, and conceptual frameworks employed in engineering philosophy research from an epistemological perspective. It can explore the intersection of epistemology, ethics, and social theory in engineering practice and education. Finally, conducting historical and comparative studies of engineering epistemology in diverse cultural, historical, and technological contexts can offer meaningful insights.

Removal enhancement of persistent basic fuchsin dye from wastewater using an eco-friendly, cost-effective Fenton process with sodium percarbonate and waste iron catalyst.

In this comprehensive investigation, we evaluate the efficacy of the Fenton process in degrading basic fuchsin (BF), a resistant dye. Our primary focus is on the utilization of readily available, environmentally benign, and cost-effective reagents for the degradation process. Furthermore, we delve into various operational parameters, including the quantity of sodium percarbonate (SPC), pH levels, and the dimensions of waste iron bars, to optimize the treatment efficiency. In the course of our research, we employed an initial SPC concentration of 0.5 mM, a pH level of 3, a waste iron bar measuring 3.5 cm in length and 0.4 cm in diameter, and a processing time of 10 min. Our findings reveal the successful elimination of the BF dye, even when subjected to treatment with diverse salts and surfactants under elevated temperatures and acidic conditions (pH below 3). This underscores the robustness of the Fenton process in purifying wastewater contaminated with dye compounds. The outcomes of our study not only demonstrate the efficiency of the Fenton process but highlight its adaptability to address dye contamination challenges across various industries. Critically, this research pioneers the application of waste iron bars as a source of iron in the Fenton reaction, introducing a novel, sustainable approach that enhances the environmental and economic viability of the process. This innovative use of recycled materials as catalysts represents a significant advancement in sustainable chemical engineering practices.

Modifying Expansive Soil Characteristics with Xanthan Biopolymer Integration

Abstract: Expansive soils pose significant challenges in various engineering projects due to their tendency to swell and shrink with changes in moisture content. Traditional stabilization methods often come with environmental and economic drawbacks. This research paper explores the potential of xanthan biopolymer, a polysaccharide of microbial origin (Xanthomonas Campestris), as a sustainable and effective alternative for altering the engineering properties of expansive soils. Through laboratory experiments and analysis, the paper investigates the influence of xanthan biopolymer on key soil properties such as swelling behaviour, shear strength, and permeability. The findings provide insights into the feasibility and efficacy of using xanthan biopolymer for soil stabilization, offering a promising avenue for sustainable geotechnical engineering practices.

Radiative cooling: Experimental and numerical analysis for enhanced thermal management strategies in engineering systems

AbstractThis study aims to fully evaluate the radiation effect in existing cooling systems. The research, a combination of experimental analysis and numerical simulations using ANSYS Fluent, examines the complexity of radiative cooling processes and their impact on thermal management in various engineering applications. The experiments began by carefully placing a 112.5 W heater into the thermal channel. Next, temperature measurements were made under various conditions. In particular, the use of black cotton fabric as the inner duct lining applied in the thermal channel stands out as an innovation that aims to optimize heat absorption by increasing radiative properties. The findings highlight the significant impact of radiation on cooling performance. A temperature drop of 2–3°C was observed in cooling under the effect of radiation. Additionally, numerical simulations reveal the feasibility of radiative cooling systems by providing valuable information about the flow dynamics and heat transfer mechanisms within the channel. The novelty of this work is its detailed examination of radiative cooling effects and its focus on its potential to optimize thermal management strategies in various engineering applications. Explaining the role of radiation in heat transfer and providing practical information to improve cooling efficiency demonstrates that this research brings important insight and lays the foundation for future advances in the field. Considering the urgent need for energy‐efficient cooling solutions and the increasing demand for sustainable engineering practices, the findings of this study will provide important insights for researchers and practitioners. This study provides innovative perspectives and solutions to address the increasing challenges of heat transfer and energy conservation in engineering systems. It makes a significant contribution to the field of thermal management by offering methodologies.

Deflection and Elastic Modulus Assessment of Subgrade in Flexible Pavement mixed with Waste Tire Scrap Material

This study aims to assess the deflection and elastic modulus (Es) of subgrade in flexible pavements, focusing on a comparative analysis between pavements with clayey soil subgrade and subgrade modified with tire scrap. The research utilized Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) for measuring subgrade deflection, essential in evaluating pavement performance. The FWD applied a dynamic load to the pavement, with deflection measurements processed using the KGP-BACK software to calculate the Es of the pavement subgrade. This approach included assessing the Lower Layer Index (LLI) and Es of the subgrade. Findings revealed a notable reduction of 37.5% in deflection and 2.68 times increase in Es for the tire scrap modified subgrade pavement compared to the standard clayey soil subgrade pavement. These results demonstrate significant enhancements in pavement structure, underlining the potential of recycled materials in sustainable civil engineering practices.

Correlation of Geotechnical and Mineralogical Properties of Lithomargic Clays in Uttara Kannada Region of South India

The present study explores the intricate relationship between the geotechnical and mineralogical properties of lithomargic clays in the Uttara Kannada region of south India. Lithomargic clays, characterized by their unique composition of clay minerals and calcareous content, play a crucial role in the geotechnical behavior of soils. The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between the mineralogical composition and engineering characteristics of lithomargic clays, shedding light on their suitability for various construction and infrastructure projects. The research methodology involves a systematic analysis of lithomargic clay samples collected from different locations in the Uttara Kannada region. Geotechnical investigations, including particle size distribution, Atterberg limits, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR) and triaxial tests, are conducted to assess the engineering properties of the clays. Concurrently, mineralogical analyses, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), are employed to identify and quantify the clay mineral constituents within the samples. The findings of this study reveal correlations between specific mineralogical features and geotechnical behaviors of lithomargic clays. Understanding these relationships is crucial for predicting the response of these clays to different engineering applications, including slope stability, foundation design and embankment construction. The research contributes valuable insights to the scientific and engineering communities, aiding in the informed utilization of lithomargic clays in geotechnical projects in the Uttara Kannada region and beyond. The outcomes of this investigation, such as the correlation of geotechnical properties with the variation in minerals in various sample locations, enhance our understanding of the complex nature of lithomargic clays, providing a foundation for more sustainable and effective engineering practices in the geologically diverse landscapes of south India.

The 7th International Conference of Engineering Against Failure (ICEAF VII) was successfully held in the beautiful island of Spetses in Greece, from June 21st to 23rd, 2023. The main goal of the ICEAF VII Conference was to provide a platform where renowned scientists, young enthusiastic researchers, colleagues, and friends from around the world came together to present and discuss their latest research findings.The ICEAF VII Organizing Committee extends its gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the conference, including Keynote speakers, the International Scientific Committee, authors, presenters, participants. Numerical Investigation for the Effect of Joint Persistence on Rock Slope Stability Using a Lattice Spring-Based Synthetic Rock Mass Model

This study underscores the profound influence of rock joints, both persistent and non-persistent with rock bridges, on the stability and behavior of rock masses—a critical consideration for sustainable engineering and natural structures, especially in rock slope stability. Leveraging the lattice spring-based synthetic rock mass (LS-SRM) modeling approach, this research aims to understand the impact of persistent and non-persistent joint parameters on rock slope stability. The Slope Model, a Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) approach-based code, is used to investigate the joint parameters such as dip angle, spacing, rock bridge length, and trace overlapping. The results show that the mobilizing zones in slopes with non-persistent joints were smaller and shallower compared to slopes with fully persistent joints. The joint dip angle was found to heavily influence the failure mode in rock slopes with non-coplanar rock bridges. Shallow joint dip angles led to tensile failures, whereas steeper joint dip angles resulted in shear-tensile failures. Slopes with wider joint spacings exhibited deeper failure zones and a higher factor of safety, while longer rock bridge lengths enhanced slope stability and led to lower failure zones. The overlapping of joint traces has no apparent impact on slope stability and failure mechanism. This comprehensive analysis contributes valuable insights into sustainable rock engineering practices and the design of resilient structures in natural environments.

Sustainability-Driven Design of Aircraft Composite Components

The current prevailing trend in design across key sectors prioritizes eco-design, emphasizing considerations of environmental aspects in the design process. The present work aims to take a significant leap forward by proposing a design process where sustainability serves as the primary driving force. In this context, sustainability is positioned as a fundamental component to be integrated into the initial stages of design, introducing innovative multidisciplinary criteria that redefine the design paradigm. Within this framework, sustainability is characterized using a comprehensive and quantifiable index encompassing technological, environmental, economic, and circular economy dimensions. To demonstrate the practical application of sustainability as the primary criterion in designing mechanical components, a parametrized finite element model of a composite plate is utilized, integrating both pristine and recycled fibers. Subsequently, a demonstrator derived from the aviation industry—specifically, a hat stiffener—is employed as a validation platform for the proposed methodology, ensuring alignment with the demonstrator’s specific requirements. Various representative trade-off scenarios are implemented to guide engineers’ decision-making during the conceptual design phase. Additionally, the robustness of the aforementioned methodology is thoroughly assessed concerning changes in the priority assigned to each sustainability criterion and its sensitivity to variations in the initial data. The significance of the proposed design methodology lies in its effectiveness in addressing the complex challenges presented by conflicting sustainability objectives. Furthermore, its adaptability positions it for potential application across various sectors, offering a transformative approach to sustainable engineering practices.

Numerical simulation of entropy generation in thermo-magnetic convection in an inverted T-shaped porous enclosure under thermal radiation

PurposeThermo-magnetic convective flow analysis under the impact of thermal radiation for heat and entropy generation phenomena is an active research field for understanding the efficiency of thermodynamic systems in various engineering sectors. This study aims to examine the characteristics of convective heat transport and entropy generation within an inverted T-shaped porous enclosure saturated with a hybrid nanofluid under the influence of thermal radiation and magnetic field.Design/methodology/approachThe mathematical model incorporates the Darcy-Forchheimer-Brinkmann model and considers thermal radiation in the energy balance equation. The complete mathematical model has been numerically simulated through the penalty finite element approach at varying values of flow parameters, such as Rayleigh number (Ra), Hartmann number (Ha), Darcy number (Da), radiation parameter (Rd) and porosity value (e). Furthermore, the graphical results for energy variation have been monitored through the energy-flux vector, whereas the entropy generation along with its individual components, namely, entropy generation due to heat transfer, fluid friction and magnetic field, are also presented. Furthermore, the results of the Bejan number for each component are also discussed in detail. Additionally, the concept of ecological coefficient of performance (ECOP) has also been included to analyse the thermal efficiency of the model.FindingsThe graphical analysis of results indicates that higher values of Ra, Da, e and Rd enhance the convective heat transport and entropy generation phenomena more rapidly. However, increasing Ha values have a detrimental effect due to the increasing impact of magnetic forces. Furthermore, the ECOP result suggests that the rising value of Da, e and Rd at smaller Ra show a maximum thermal efficiency of the mathematical model, which further declines as the Ra increases. Conversely, the thermal efficiency of the model improves with increasing Ha value, showing an opposite trend in ECOP.Practical implicationsSuch complex porous enclosures have practical applications in engineering and science, including areas like solar power collectors, heat exchangers and electronic equipment. Furthermore, the present study of entropy generation would play a vital role in optimizing system performance, improving energy efficiency and promoting sustainable engineering practices during the natural convection process.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first ever attempted detailed investigation of heat transfer and entropy generation phenomena flow parameter ranges in an inverted T-shaped porous enclosure under a uniform magnetic field and thermal radiation.

Factors influencing sustainability aspects in crowdsourced software development: A systematic literature review

AbstractCrowdsource software development has become more and more popular in recent years in the software industry. Crowdsourcing is an open‐call technique for outsourcing tasks to a broad and undefined crowd. Crowdsourcing provides numerous advantages including reduced costs, fast project completion, talent identification, diversity of solutions, top‐quality, and access to problem‐solving creativity. Despite of the benefits gained from crowdsourcing, there are numerous issues like lack of experienced workers, lack of confidentiality, copyright issues, software sustainability, and so forth. There is also less focus on the long‐term sustainability of software development because of new ideas emerging in crowdsourcing software development. Furthermore, in literature, lack of guidelines towards sustainable software crowdsourcing is highlighted as one of the limitations in the software standards. This study aims to identify the factors that influence sustainability aspects in crowdsourced software development. We have conducted a systematic literature review for identification of these factors. In this paper, we present findings of the systematic literature review in the form of a list of 11 factors extracted from a sample of 45 finally selected papers. Among these factors, six of the factors are ranked as critical factors. These critical factors are “Lack of coding standard in documentation,” “Use of popular programming tools,” “Crowd Lack of knowledge and awareness about sustainability,” “Energy‐efficient coding,” “Lack of awareness about sustainable software engineering practices,” and “Lack of coordination/communication between client and crowd.”

A Fuzzy-TOPSIS-Based Approach to Assessing Sustainability in Software Engineering: An Industry 5.0 Perspective

New possibilities and challenges have evolved in the setting of the software engineering sector’s rapid transition to Industry 5.0, wherein sustainability takes centre stage. Appropriate evaluation approaches are required for analysing the long-term viability of software engineering practices within this paradigm. This study proposes an innovative approach to evaluating sustainability in software engineering within Industry 5.0 by utilising the fuzzy technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (fuzzy TOPSIS) methodology. The fuzzy TOPSIS approach is effective at accounting for the inherent uncertainties as well as imprecisions related to sustainability assessments, allowing for informed decision-making. This approach helps in the recognition of the most sustainable software engineering practices in Industry 5.0 by taking into account a defined set of sustainability parameters. We rigorously analyse the current literature and expert views to provide an extensive set of relevant sustainability standards for the area of software engineering. Following that, we develop an evaluation methodology based on fuzzy TOPSIS that can handle the subjectivity as well as fuzziness inherent in sustainability evaluations. A case study with a software development company functioning in Industry 5.0 demonstrates the utility and efficacy of our suggested framework. The case study outcomes reveal the benefits and drawbacks of various software engineering methodologies in terms of sustainability. The study’s findings provide substantial information for decision-makers in the software engineering field, assisting them in making educated decisions about sustainable. Finally, this study helps to establish environmentally and socially appropriate techniques within the context of Industry 5.0.

 Chemical bio-process intensification, driven by the need for sustainability and cost-effectiveness, has gained significant attention. This study explores dynamic intensification (DI), a strategy to enhance efficiency by modifying system dynamics, operation, and control. Two key approaches are investigated: intensification by design, involving deliberate changes to physical and chemical aspects, and intensification by control, optimizing process parameters and feedback loops.
 The research focuses on the Optimal Periodic Control (OPC) method, dating back to the 1960s but now revisited with modern technology. To investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of dynamic intensification, a comprehensive methodology encompassing modeling, optimization, linearization, dynamic intensification, and control was designed. This methodology ensures systematic and standardized testing of DI in various bioprocesses within the industry.
 Through rigorous case studies, such as Activated Sludge Model No. 1 (ASM1) and an antibiotic perfusion bioreactor, the study demonstrates the practical benefits of dynamic intensification, including enhanced process efficiency and control. Applying model predictive control (MPC) further improves process efficiency, and the intensified systems are thoroughly compared to their respective base cases.
 The insights gained from this research contribute to advancements in bioprocessing technologies across industries, paving the way for sustainable and efficient engineering practices. Engineers can leverage this knowledge and the developed methodology to optimize chemical bioprocesses through innovative intensification strategies, ultimately promoting more eco-friendly and economical bio-processes. Triaxial Shear Analysis Using Discrete Element Methods for Sandy Soil with an Improved Flexible Membrane Boundary

Exploring strain localization has substantial potential to significantly impact the disaster resilience and mitigation capabilities of infrastructure, thus influencing project sustainability. Consequently, the field of sustainable geotechnical engineering is progressively directing attention toward studying soil strain localization. This research focuses on triaxial testing to deepen our understanding of this phenomenon by applying discrete element methods, thereby fostering the advancement of sustainable geotechnical engineering practices. While rigid-wall-based discrete element triaxial tests have been extensively studied, using flexible boundaries in these tests has received limited attention. This study introduces a three-stage method to enhance stress application in flexible membranes by applying confining pressure. A comparison of triaxial tests was conducted at both macroscopic and microscopic scales, utilizing flexible and rigid boundaries. Moreover, numerical simulations were performed on flexible membrane samples with various particle sizes to identify appropriate dimensions for flexible boundaries. Our results demonstrate that the improved flexible membrane provides more accurate representations of macroscopic and microscopic sample variations than rigid walls. Keeping the particle sizes for flexible membranes within the range of 0.2 to 0.8 times the characteristic particle size (r) is essential for striking a balance between simulation accuracy and computational efficiency. These findings enhance the accuracy of triaxial compression test simulations and offer a valuable foundation for studying strain localization in soils. Understanding these phenomena is essential for various geotechnical engineering applications, such as foundation design and slope stability analysis. Green Software Engineering: Cloud-based Face Detection and Static Code Analysis

This paper presents an approach to green software engineering that integrates cloud-based face detection and static code analysis to promote sustainable software development. The proposed method uses OpenCV, a computer vision library, and a pre-trained Haar cascade classifier to detect faces in images. Faces are marked with green bounding frames that serve as visual indicators of their locations. In addition, the paper evaluates the quality of a distinct script file using Pylint library static code analysis techniques. The analysis evaluates code compliance with standards, identifies potential flaws, and identifies code odors. By integrating these practices, the proposed method seeks to reduce resource consumption, maximize energy efficiency, and enhance code maintainability, promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable software engineering practices. One outcome of our effort was creating the YasminNadiaArabcSocialMediaImages data collection, which includes faces of Arabic social media celebrities and is filled out to be accessible for public usage on the websites Kaggle and GitHub.
