BARRIERS TO THE ADOPTION OF SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES IN SMALL HOTEL BUSINESSES: A QUALITATIVE STUDY IN GHANA

Purpose- By integrating sustainability into their business operations, small tourism and hospitality accommodation enterprises will not only contribute to achieving sustainable development goals 7, 9,12,13 and 14, but also promote a culture of environmental and social consciousness that aligns with the broader objectives of the United Nations’ Agenda 2030. Therefore, this study explores barriers to the adoption of sustainability practices among small hotel businesses in Ghana. Methodology- Using a qualitative research framework and descriptive analysis method, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 16 small hotel managers in the Cape Coast Metropolis of Ghana. The interview technique was adopted because it allowed for the acquisition of detailed information from participants on barriers to the adoption of sustainability practices. Findings- The findings revealed a spectrum of internal barriers: lack of awareness and understanding of sustainability principles, attitudes, negligence among hotel staff, and financial constraints. External barriers, such as owner interference in managerial decision-making, exploitative supplier actions, burdensome taxes and levies, and seasonal fluctuations with low hotel patronage, were also identified as the main barriers to the adoption of sustainability practices in small hotel businesses in Ghana. Conclusion- The study concludes by recommending targeted sustainability education and training programs to enhance sustainability awareness and cost-effective practices, while changes in organizational structures such as empowering managers and fostering collaboration between owners and managers are imperative for effective sustainability adoption and integration. Additionally, small hotel businesses should diversify revenue streams beyond peak seasons and, with collaborative efforts, advocate for supportive policies and regulations at all levels to create a conducive environment for the adoption of sustainable practices.

Greater than the Sum of Its Parts: Combining Entrepreneurial and Sustainable Competencies in Entrepreneurship Education

Discussions about sustainability and entrepreneurship are often an “either/or” discourse. Many higher-education institutions offer sustainability education programs with the aim of enabling students to think and act sustainably without concrete tools for change. Similarly, many offerings in entrepreneurship fail to address sustainability issues. This article assumes a qualitative, constructivist, systems thinking approach to theorize and analyze the relationships between entrepreneurship and sustainability competencies and makes three contributions to theory and practice. First, it provides a thematic analysis of two important European competence frameworks—for sustainability (GreenComp) and entrepreneurial competencies (EntreComp)—and delineates their relationships. Second, through a case study of an experiential educational format, it offers three educational tools that integrate sustainability and entrepreneurial competencies. Third, it contributes to the growing field of research that combines sustainability and entrepreneurship education. The results of this paper are relevant for policymakers who want to combine sustainability and entrepreneurship in education, as well as for educators looking for methods to combine both competence frameworks.

High School Students' Health Literacy Related to the COVID-19 Pandemic in Indonesia

The global crisis due to COVID-19 demanded changes in people’s behavior to adapt to the pandemic. One factor that determined behaviors was literacy skills, especially in the health sector. A study related to the COVID-19 pandemic was carried out on high school students to assess students’ health literacy and determine related factors. Data collection was carried out from December 2021 to February 2022 by dividing urban areas, developing districts, and remote regions. The Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) was adapted to suit the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. The data was interpreted as descriptive-narrative. Differences in literacy ability and the relationship with influencing factors were analyzed using ordinal regression and SEM-AMOS analysis. Limited health literacy was found in students from remote areas. A significant relationship was found between health literacy and class interest based on the ordinal regression test results. In contrast, health literacy was not related to gender, grade level, infected experience, and domicile. It was found that the ability to navigate health system information had a significant effect on students’ understanding of health literacy. Health literacy, which was low and unequal, is expected to improve strategic and sustainable education programs through science learning and physical health. Sustainable Agriculture Education Programs in Uganda: Successes, Challenges, and Impact

This review explores the necessity and effectiveness of sustainable agriculture education programs in Uganda, focusing on integrated, experiential learning approaches. It highlights the Agro-ecology Summer Residency Program initiated by Sustainable Agriculture in Uganda (SAI) and other educational initiatives aimed at village farmers. The study examines the benefits of these programs in terms of improved crop yields, environmental conservation, and economic empowerment. Challenges in implementing such programs, including limited access to resources and lack of awareness, are discussed alongside collaborative approaches for success. The impact of sustainable agriculture education on rural communities is assessed, emphasizing enhanced food security, increased income generation, and improved livelihoods. Penyuluhan Pencegahan Penularan Penyakit Malaria kepada Masyarakat di Desa Kampung Baru Kelurahan Galang Baru Kota Batam

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasites of the genus Plasmodium. It targets erythrocytes and manifests with symptoms such as fever, chills, anemia, and splenomegaly, either acutely or chronically, transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Malaria remains a public health problem in many areas, including Kampung Baru Village, Galang Baru Subdistrict, Batam City. In order to fulfill the mission of community service, we have designed a comprehensive and sustainable education program to increase awareness and knowledge of the community about malaria. This program not only focuses on educating about the prevention and management of the disease but also directly involves active participation of the community in the learning and implementation process. Through collaboration with various parties, such as community leaders, health workers, and local leaders, we aim to create an environment that supports sustainable behavioral change in malaria prevention efforts. Additionally, we integrate a multidisciplinary approach in this program by addressing specific challenges faced in the local context, such as limited access to healthcare services, environmental conditions conducive to the breeding of malaria-carrying mosquitoes, and socio-economic factors influencing prevention and treatment efforts. Thus, this education program aims not only to reduce the burden of malaria in Kampung Baru Village and its surroundings but also serves as a tangible contribution to fulfilling the tri dharma activities of higher education institutions in the field of community service.

Maximizing Teacher Competence and Performance: The Influential Factors Across Individuals, Organizations, Leadership, and Environment – A Comprehensive Systematic Review and Model

This research is constructed in a systematic literature review that identifies and maps the factors influencing teacher competence and performance. The competence and performance of teachers relate to the success of the teaching strategy applied to develop the knowledge and personality of students. Therefore, educational institutions or interested parties must determine the factors influencing teacher competence and performance for evaluation material in establishing sustainable development, education, and teacher training programs. This research aims to (1) identify individual factors that affect teacher competence, (2) identify organizational factors that affect teacher competence, (3) identify leadership factors that affect teacher competence, (4) identify environmental factors that affect teacher competence, (5) identify individual factors that affect teacher performance, (6) identify organizational factors that affect teacher performance, (7) identify factors leadership that affects teacher performance, and (8) identify environmental factors that affect teacher performance. The sample in this study included 45 identified articles from 463 articles taken by purposive sampling through journal indexing portals in the form of Google Scholar, IEEE, and Scopus. Data collection techniques used PICOS and a Systematic Review Diagram based on PRISMA with data analysis in the form of mapping using the Systematic Review model. The results show a significant influence of individual, organizational, leadership, and environmental factors on teacher competency and performance. Therefore, it is necessary to make efforts for educational institutions to maximize teacher competence and performance after knowing the dominant driving factors that arise so that educational institutions can provide competency and performance improvement facilities for teachers.

Corporate management, green finance, and sustainability

This study aimed to assess the impact of green finance and corporate management on China’s sustainable development index from 1990 to 2020 using time series analysis. The findings reveal that a 1% increase in the green financial market corresponds to a 0.31% and 0.69% enhancement in China’s sustainable development index in the short and long-term, respectively. Similarly, a 1% improvement in the corporate governance index is associated with a 0.16% and 0.29% increase in the short- and long-term. Interestingly, the green tax policy, acting as a proxy for green fiscal policy, negatively influences the sustainable development index. Additionally, the poverty rate emerges as a concerning factor hindering sustainable development in China. The policy implications include advocating for the digitalization of green finance, expanding poverty alleviation efforts, reforming the green taxation system, and implementing corporate sustainable management education programs.

고등학생 대상의 포토보이스를 활용한 지속가능한 식생활에 대한 개념 인식 탐색

This study aimed to identify sustainable dietary practices, concepts, and factors that hinder practice from the perspective of high school students and suggest what the current sustainable dietary education should be supplemented. The study utilized photovoice to compare and analyze the differences in sustainable dietary practices based on the implementation of sustainable dietary education among high school students. A group of 7 participants, who did not provide sustainable dietary education, submitted 65 photos, while a group of 8 participants who underwent the education submitted 80 photos. The results of this study showed that the overall awareness of sustainable diet concepts among all participants was highest in the health area (66.54%), followed by the environment (23.74%) and consideration (9.73%). Categorizing the results according to the sustainable dietary area revealed a diverse range of concepts extracted through sustainable dietary education, with an increase in the number of small areas. It was observed that the majority of the research participants were consuming foods with high sugar and sodium content, and they tended to consume more delivery food or dining out rather than cooking meals themselves. Interview results also indicated that while students demonstrated a conceptual understanding of sustainable dietary habits, there were cases where this understanding needed to translate into practical actions. This study is significant in utilizing the qualitative research method of photovoice to uncover the meaning and practical examples of sustainable dietary habits from the perspective of high school students. The results can be utilized to enhance and guide sustainable dietary education programs.

Digital Accounting: An Overview of Current Teaching in Accounting Education

Brunei Darussalam’s Wawasan 2035 helps a developing nation progress and remain sustainable for future generations. This study will assess the future of accounting education in local universities, particularly Brunei Darussalam. Automated, digital accounting is the future of accounting. This view leaves accounting studies vulnerable to the future as accounting education is primarily theoretical with few practical applications. Thus, this study effort seeks sustainable accounting education programs. If disregarded, accounting research will not apply to future accounting, which may raise unemployment. This study uses thematic analysis to analyze interviews due to the small number of respondents. Results match literature and interviews. Due to software shortages, accounting professors lack digital accounting skills, according to this research. Accounting education depends on instructors adapting to curriculum changes. This research may help local education steering committees change accounting education.

The Adoption of AI in Mental Health Care-Perspectives From Mental Health Professionals: Qualitative Descriptive Study.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the mental health care environment. AI tools are increasingly accessed by clients and service users. Mental health professionals must be prepared not only to use AI but also to have conversations about it when delivering care. Despite the potential for AI to enable more efficient and reliable and higher-quality care delivery, there is a persistent gap among mental health professionals in the adoption of AI. A needs assessment was conducted among mental health professionals to (1) understand the learning needs of the workforce and their attitudes toward AI and (2) inform the development of AI education curricula and knowledge translation products. A qualitative descriptive approach was taken to explore the needs of mental health professionals regarding their adoption of AI through semistructured interviews. To reach maximum variation sampling, mental health professionals (eg, psychiatrists, mental health nurses, educators, scientists, and social workers) in various settings across Ontario (eg, urban and rural, public and private sector, and clinical and research) were recruited. A total of 20 individuals were recruited. Participants included practitioners (9/20, 45% social workers and 1/20, 5% mental health nurses), educator scientists (5/20, 25% with dual roles as professors/lecturers and researchers), and practitioner scientists (3/20, 15% with dual roles as researchers and psychiatrists and 2/20, 10% with dual roles as researchers and mental health nurses). Four major themes emerged: (1) fostering practice change and building self-efficacy to integrate AI into patient care; (2) promoting system-level change to accelerate the adoption of AI in mental health; (3) addressing the importance of organizational readiness as a catalyst for AI adoption; and (4) ensuring that mental health professionals have the education, knowledge, and skills to harness AI in optimizing patient care. AI technologies are starting to emerge in mental health care. Although many digital tools, web-based services, and mobile apps are designed using AI algorithms, mental health professionals have generally been slower in the adoption of AI. As indicated by this study's findings, the implications are 3-fold. At the individual level, digital professionals must see the value in digitally compassionate tools that retain a humanistic approach to care. For mental health professionals, resistance toward AI adoption must be acknowledged through educational initiatives to raise awareness about the relevance, practicality, and benefits of AI. At the organizational level, digital professionals and leaders must collaborate on governance and funding structures to promote employee buy-in. At the societal level, digital and mental health professionals should collaborate in the creation of formal AI training programs specific to mental health to address knowledge gaps. This study promotes the design of relevant and sustainable education programs to support the adoption of AI within the mental health care sphere.

The COVID-19 pandemic poses the challenge ofining a healthy and varied diet and regular physical activity. This is because people prefer to buy processed foods, such as snacks, fast food, and ready-to-eat cereals, which tend to be high in fat, sugar, and salt. In addition, psychological and emotional responses to the outbreak of COVID-19 can increase the risk of developing dysfunctional eating behavior. The choice of foods and how often they are eaten can affect the health of the body, teeth, and gums. Excessive consumption of sugar-containing soda, fruit drinks with added sugar, or low-nutritional snacks can increase the risk of teeth hole. Therefore, a community service program (PkM) was designed with the aim of providing education and training to the community to gain knowledge about diet and improve health. The development and training of a healthy diet to the Lisiuex Apartment Meditarenia 1 West Jakarta community was conducted online, illustrating the improvement of the participants' knowledge and yielding good results. Sustainable education and training programmes are needed as a means of improving the development of health that starts with the family.

Memperkuat Pemahaman Tri Hita Karana Melalui Upacara Ngaturang Cicipan

This research aims to gain a deeper understanding of the Tri Hita Karana concept through the utilization of an ethnopedagogical approach within the Ngaturang Cicipan Ceremony, a traditional cultural ritual conducted by the community of Dusun Rincung in the village of Banyu Urip, Gerung District, West Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province. The Tri Hita Karana concept, which encompasses the balance of human relationships with the divine, fellow humans, and nature, holds profound significance in the local culture and has the potential to enrich environmental and spiritual perspectives. This study employs an ethnopedagogical approach to integrate the elements of Tri Hita Karana into the Ngaturang Cicipan Ceremony with the objective of enhancing community understanding and awareness of Tri Hita Karana values. The research methodology involves qualitative data collection through participatory observation, interviews, and content analysis. The findings reveal that the implementation of ethnopedagogy in the Ngaturang Cicipan Ceremony successfully reinforces the community's comprehension and appreciation of the Tri Hita Karana concept. Active participation in the ceremony enriched with Tri Hita Karana elements has helped elevate environmental consciousness, social values, and spiritual aspects in the daily lives of the community. This research contributes to our understanding of how an ethnopedagogical approach can be used to deepen cultural values and philosophy in the context of traditional cultural practices. These findings also underscore the significance of local culture in comprehending and addressing environmental challenges and enhancing the quality of life for the community. The implications of this research can serve as a foundation for developing more contextual and sustainable educational programs that promote harmony among humans, nature, and spirituality.

Health Expenditures, Human Capital, and Sustainable Development: Panel Evidence from the New EU Member Countries

Both health and human capital are simultaneously resources and indicators of sustainable development. Therefore, this research article studies the causal interaction among total health expenditures, out-of-pocket expenditures, human capital, and sustainable development in eleven EU member countries during 2000–2020 through the panel causality test. The result of the causality test indicates that indicators of health expenditures, human capital, and sustainable development are closely interrelated, but the causal interaction among indicators of health expenditures, human capital, and sustainable development differs among the new EU members. On the one hand, health expenditures and human capital are significant factors underlying sustainable development. On the other hand, sustainable development is a significant determinant of health expenditures and human capital. Considering the significant role of human capital for sustainable development, education and training programs should especially be revised in a way to improve the sustainability and healthy life awareness and qualifications of the individuals. Furthermore, the digital transformation of health systems from both supply and demand sides should be supported by public health policies.

A comparison of ethnocentrism and global citizenship attitudes among Kuwaiti education students

ABSTRACT This study examined the level of and relationship between ethnocentrism and global citizenship attitudes among 346 undergraduate education students at a university in Kuwait. Ethnocentrism was measured using the General Ethnocentrism Scale (GENE) developed by (Neuliep, J. W., and J. C. McCroskey. 1998. “The Development of a U.S. and Generalized Ethnocentrism Scale.” Communication Research Reports 14 (4): 385–398; Neuliep, J. W., and J. C. McCroskey. 2013. “Ethnocentrism Scale.” Measurement Instrument Database for the Social Sciences. https://www.midss.org/sites/default/files/ethnocentrism_scale.pdf) and global citizenship was measured using the Global Citizenship Scale by (Morais, D. B., and A. C. Ogden. 2011. “Initial Development and Validation of the Global Citizenship Scale.” Journal of Studies in International Education 15 (5): 445–466), both of which were translated into Arabic. No significant correlation was found between the two scales overall, but there were significant correlations between some of the subscales. Specifically, ingroup preference was negatively correlated with intercultural communication while ingroup superiority was positively correlated with global self-awareness. These findings suggest that the relationship between ethnocentrism and global citizenship is multifaceted, with some aspects of ethnocentrism working against some aspects of global citizenship, while others may work together. In pursuit of developing sustainable global citizenship education (GCE) programmes, it is imperative to keep the complexity of the relationship between ethnocentrism and global citizenship in mind.

Role of green finance and investment in sustainable resource development in China

This research employs the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method to evaluate the effects of the size of the green finance market on the generation of wind power, solar power, and hydropower in China from 1990 to 2021. The empirical findings indicate that a 1% increase in the size of the green finance market is associated with a nearly 0.47% increase in wind power generation, a 0.36% increase in solar power generation, and a 0.15% increase in hydropower generation in China. Several control variables, including the Consumer Price Index (CPI), exhibit a negative impact on renewable energy sources in the short term, while China's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and foreign direct investment (FDI) have positive effects. In the long run, the size of the green finance market remains crucial for the development of renewable energy, with wind power demonstrating a more significant influence. To promote green finance and sustainable energy in China, practical policies could involve the digitalization of green finance markets, the establishment of sustainable education programs to enhance public awareness of green initiatives, the improvement of regulations governing green FDI, and the utilization of technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and financial technology (fintech) to enhance green investments.

Development and Evaluation of Home Economics Dietary Education Programs for Improving the Sustainable Dietary Competencies of High School Students

This study aimed to develop, and evaluate the effectiveness of, a home economics dietary education program that could be used to improve high school students’ sustainable dietary competencies. To achieve this goal, learning objectives and elements were selected for the education program to improve the students’ sustainable dietary competency. The content validity of this program was verified with numerous experts. After implementing the new educational program, its effect on high school students' sustainable dietary competencies was assessed through pre- and post-tests. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, through the textbook analysis, the necessity of developing an educational program that can cultivate the three areas that constitute a sustainable diet (environment, health, and consideration) was confirmed. Second, a total of nine teaching and learning plans for sustainable dietary education programs were developed. From there, content validity verification was conducted by experts, indicating that the developed educational program was highly applicable in the field. Third, after the implementation, a survey was conducted based on a questionnaire consisting of 20 items related to three areas of sustainable diet, while the pre- and post-test assessment indicated statistically significant differences in all three areas: environment (pre: 3.40, post: 4.46, p<.001), health (pre: 3.15, post: 4.32, p<.001), and consideration (pre: 3.46, post: 4.48, p<.001). It is expected that the educational program developed in this study will be used as a basis for dietary education that fosters food citizenship in high school home economics courses.

Leveraging the OECD Framework to Create Policies That Enable Eco-Innovation: A Case study of Neom

Amid escalating urbanization worldwide, cities confront the imperative to reconcile economic growth and environmental sustainability. This study employs a comparative analysis to evaluate the applicability of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD) seminal eco-innovation policy framework within Saudi Arabia’s emergent Neom City. The OECD framework delineates a robust policy ecosystem encompassing economic incentives, regulatory standards, market facilitation mechanisms, and knowledge exchange networks to catalyze eco-innovation. Initial benchmarking reveals lacunae within Neom’s extant sustainability planning, including limited financial incentives for green technology adoption and nascent sustainability education programs. Targeted integration of OECD prescriptions could potentiate Neom’s eco-innovation across multifaceted domains spanning renewable energy integration, energy efficiency, green infrastructure, and sustainable mobility. Urban policymakers can operationalize elements of the OECD’s model to align Neom’s development objectives with ecological sustainability, propelling its ambitions to manifest as an pioneering sustainable city. This research proffers strategic insights that can enable urban governance actors worldwide to leverage policy architectures to synergize economic growth and sustainability.

Perception of Women's Knowledge of and Attitudes towards Cervical Cancer and Papanicolaou Smear Screenings: A Qualitative Study in South Africa.

Cervical cancer is the most common form of cancer worldwide. Consequently, it is crucial that women are encouraged to undergo interventions early via Papanicolaou (Pap) smear screenings to improve their health. In light of this, this study explored the knowledge of and attitudes towards cervical cancer and Papanicolaou (Pap) smear screenings among women in the Caleb Motshabi district, South Africa. Four focus group discussions were carried out among 19 women. The interviews/discussion were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim and then analysed thematically. In this regard, seven main themes emerged that provided insight into the perceptions of the participants regarding their knowledge of and attitudes towards cervical cancer and Papanicolaou (Pap) smear screenings. While the majority of participants were aware of cervical cancer and Pap smears, they lacked more specific knowledge of what this cancer is or its related causes. Although some participants had had a Pap smear done, they neither knew how the procedure was done nor the reasons for it. In addition, most mentioned receiving information about this procedure from their peers rather than healthcare workers. Notably, those with previous experience indicated that they had regular screenings. Furthermore, they better understood exactly how it is done. The findings emphasised women's limited knowledge of cervical cancer and Pap smears. It further highlighted the need for sustainable education programmes and mobile clinics to encourage an awareness of and accessibility to this particular type of screening within South African communities. Therefore, intervention strategies that make people aware of this specific cancer and encourage the uptake of Papanicolaou (Pap) smear screenings are crucial, as is the continued advocacy for sustained educational programmes and accessible healthcare services.

EXPERIENCES AND STRATEGIES OF EDUCATION AND CONSERVATION WITHIN GEOPARKS: A BIBLIOMETRIC REVIEW

UNESCO Global Geoparks are characterized by their contribution to the conservation of natural, geological, and cultural resources of the regions where they are located. Geoparks also represent an important figure within the sustainable development of the regions, so strategies around economic growth, conservation, and promotion of education are a fundamental part of their raison d'être. This study aims to identify the main trends in educational and conservation processes in geoparks worldwide. The methodological approach is based on the review of 114 articles from a search equation in the Scopus database, analyzing the results through a series of quantity, quality, and structure indicators. The search period is between 2005 and 2023, so there are recent advances in implementing educational aspects in geoparks. Other results point to the participation of several Asian and European countries as the most predominant, as well as a trend in the implementation of educational processes focused on earth sciences, environmental sciences, and social sciences. Sustainable development and conservation education programs are major players in the findings of this study. In this way, geoparks work as centers for developing conservation dynamics, developing economic and social aspects driven by educational initiatives, and disseminating knowledge to the communities and visitors. The geoheritage tourism sector integrates educational practices into developing experiences to raise awareness among the community and visitors.
