Uplifting local ecological knowledge as part of adaptation pathways to wildfire risk reduction: A case study in Montseny, Catalonia (Spain).

Living with wildfires in an era of climate change requires adaptation and weaving together many forms of knowledge. Empirical evidence of knowledge co-production in wildfire management is lacking in Mediterranean European areas. We explored how local ecological knowledge can be leveraged to reduce wildfire risk through an adaptation pathways process in the Montseny massif and wider Tordera River watershed of Catalonia, Spain: an area stewarded through forestry and agriculture, tourism, nature conservation, and fire management. We combined different methods (e.g., a timeline and Three Horizons framework) throughout three workshops with agents of change to co-create adaptation pathways to reduce wildfire risk, integrating a historical perspective of the landscape while envisioning desirable futures. Our results showed that local ecological knowledge and other soft adaptation strategies contribute to innovative sustainable development initiatives that can also mitigate wildfire risk. The adaptation pathways approach holds much potential to inform local policies and support wildfire-based community initiatives in diverse contexts.

Sustainability consciousness in higher education: Construction of three-dimensional sustainability and role of locus of control

This study aims to analyze the level of sustainability awareness among university students, especially focusing on their knowledge, attitudes, and behavior related to sustainability across three main dimensions: environmental, social, and economic. Additionally, the study explores whether these behaviors are influenced by individuals’ beliefs about their ability to effect change. This study employed a quantitative approach involving all active students enrolled in the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Negeri Semarang. A samples of 233 respondents was selected using a non-probability sampling method. Data was collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling Partial Least Square method. The study findings reveal that attitude towards sustainability have stronger influence on behavior than knowledge. Respondents' demonstrated a higher level of understanding of sustainability compared to their attitudes and behaviors towards it. Furthermore, concerns to economic aspects were found to impact sustainability behaviors. Most respondents expressed a belief that events around them are beyond their control. This article is expected to significantly contribute to aligning policies and practices, particularly in fostering sustainability awareness, and serve as a basis for achieving sustainable development initiatives.

Cybersecurity’s Role in Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development: Bridging Technology and Sustainability Goals

This study investigates the pivotal role of cybersecurity in bolstering environmental protection and sustainable development, a critical yet underexplored nexus in contemporary research. Employing a systematic literature review and content analysis, the research scrutinizes peer-reviewed articles, conference proceedings, and industry reports from 2015 to 2023, sourced from databases such as IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The methodology is anchored in a rigorous search strategy, leveraging keywords related to cybersecurity, sustainability, and communication technologies, and adheres to defined inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure the relevance and quality of the literature reviewed. Key findings highlight cybersecurity as an indispensable enabler of sustainable development initiatives, safeguarding the technological infrastructure essential for environmental conservation efforts. The study identifies evolving cyber threats as a significant challenge, necessitating adaptive security measures that anticipate and mitigate potential vulnerabilities. Furthermore, it underscores the opportunities presented by advanced cybersecurity technologies, such as artificial intelligence and blockchain, in enhancing the security and efficiency of sustainable practices. Strategic recommendations emphasize the need for comprehensive cybersecurity frameworks, stakeholder collaboration, cybersecurity education, and alignment with regulatory standards to fortify the resilience of sustainability initiatives against cyber threats. The study concludes that integrating robust cybersecurity measures is paramount in the pursuit of sustainable development goals, calling for ongoing vigilance, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration to navigate the complex landscape of digital threats and opportunities. Comparative assessment and policy analysis of forecasting quarterly renewable energy demand: Fresh evidence from an innovative seasonal approach with superior matching algorithms

In the pursuit of sustainable development, accurate renewable energy demand forecasting holds great significance for climate change mitigation and promoting sustainability. However, renewable energy forecasting has been consistently challenged by seasonality and nonlinearity. Identifying the periodic and nonlinear characteristics concealed within renewable energy sources accurately is still an unexplored problem. Consequently, an innovative nonlinear discrete seasonal grey model is proposed for renewable energy forecasting, which incorporates seasonal dummy variables and a power exponent term for handling the seasonality and nonlinear patterns in time series. Furthermore, an intelligent algorithm matching framework is proposed to augment the flexibility of the newly developed model. For practical purposes, the new methodology is contrasted against a range of benchmarks encompassing statistical, machine-learning, and traditional grey models in forecasting the quarterly total renewable energy consumption in the United States. The proposed model exhibits over 27% improvement rates over its counterparts, achieving the most superior predictive accuracies of 1.45%, 39.27, and 0.79 in MAPEP, RMSEP, and MASEP metrics, respectively. Furthermore, the probability density and sample size analyses are conducted to validate the robustness of the new model, confirming its adaptability and stability towards algorithm randomness and historical information volume. Consequently, the novel model is employed to forecast the short-to-long-terms renewable energy consumption in the U.S., showcasing an upward trend and seasonal fluctuations of the consumption for the forthcoming 24 quarters from 2023Q4 to 2029Q3. These insights can offer valuable implications to the stakeholders such as energy suppliers, utility managers, and policy advocates, highlighting actionable strategies for optimizing renewable energy consumption forecasting and aiding sustainable development initiatives.

Promoting Sustainable Development in Combating Schistosomiasis through Community-Centric Approaches: The Role of Social Empowerment and Education in Ondo State

Schistosomiasis has been reported to be the most common parasitic disease after malaria capable of affecting over 249 million individuals in lower-income countries. The disease is caused by a blood fluke from the genus Schistosoma and can be either chronic or acute in several patients depending on the worm burden. Poor sanitation and lack of potable water are major predisposing factors for the sustained transmission of schistosomiasis in several communities in Africa. In Nigeria, 24 million cases are being reported in all states, with over 100 million individuals at risk of the infection due to the disease being endemic in the region. This disease is made worse when there is a co-infection of urinary tract infections (UTIs) or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In Ondo state Nigeria, urinary schistosomiasis is called Atosiaja, blood fluke, or snail fever. The disease is endemic in several communities in Ondo states due to little or no access to clean water which increases the contact of villagers to natural flowing rivers and streams that are natural breeding sites for the intermediate hosts. This systematic review was carried out to evaluate the prevalence of schistosomiasis in communities of Ondo state, Nigeria. The review was conducted through a literature search using two scientific databases which focuses on the prevalence and intensity of schistosomiasis infection in communities of Ondo state covering the period 2017 to 2022. This review looks at the relationship between sustainable development initiatives and the prevalence of schistosomiasis in Ondo state. By addressing critical issues such as water quality, community education and integrated vector management as long-term solutions to reduce the burden of schistosomiasis in Ondo state. This holistic approach will contribute overall to improvements in public health and the environment.

Land Use Change Mapping and Analysis Using Remote Sensing and GIS: A Case Study in Tam Ky City, Quang Nam Province, Vietnam

Changes in land use/land cover (LULC) play a critical role in effective natural resource management, monitoring, and development, particularly within the realm of urban planning. In the examination of Tam Ky city, Quang Nam province, Vietnam, spanning from 2000 to 2020, remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques were employed. The Landsat satellite data (Landsat 7 ETM+ for 2000, Landsat 5 TM for 2010, and Landsat 8 OLI for 2022) underwent analysis using the supervised classification method in ArcGIS 10.8 software to identify and categorize six primary LULC classes: water bodies, agriculture, settlements, vegetation, construction, and bare soil/rocks. The reliability of the classification was evaluated through k values, revealing high accuracy with values of 0.951, 0.953, and 0.950 for the years 2000, 2010, and 2020, respectively. Notable shifts in LULC were observed during the period from 2000 to 2020. The areas covered by vegetation and settlements expanded by 53 and 1300 ha, respectively, while water bodies, agriculture, construction, and bare soil/rocks experienced reductions of 466, 48, 413, and 425 ha, respectively. To facilitate a rapid assessment, the study also incorporated the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized difference built-up index (NDBI). The trends identified in this study are consistently aligned with the results of the supervised classification. The identified changes in LULC pose a substantial environmental threat, and the study's outcomes serve as a valuable asset for future land use planning and management in the area. The method's high accuracy enhances the dependability of the results, making them crucial for well-informed decision-making and sustainable development initiatives.

Spatial modeling of land resources and constraints to guide urban development in Saudi Arabia’s NEOM region using geomatics techniques

This research presents a GIS-based approach to evaluate land suitability for the urbanization of Saudi Arabia’s NEOM region, an ambitious initiative for sustainable development within a desert setting. By employing a multi-criteria decision-making framework, we have synthesized data on land resources, stability, accessibility, construction costs, and proximity to conservation areas using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to prioritize these factors based on their importance for sustainable growth. Our analysis reveals that areas designated with grid values of 9 and 8, totaling 6312.33 square kilometers or 28.23% of the area studied, are most favorable for urban development. These sectors span the northern, central, and southern parts of NEOM, which are notable for their strategic location near future infrastructure and natural assets conducive to sustainable practices. This finding supports NEOM’s key initiatives such as “The Line,” “Oxagon,” and “TROJENA,” showcasing the model’s utility in directing urban development strategies. The study discusses the broader socio-economic and environmental ramifications of pinpointing areas suited and unsuited for development, underlining the model’s role in facilitating decision-making that aligns urban expansion with environmental stewardship. Furthermore, it advocates for leveraging development-restricted zones in conservation efforts and renewable energy ventures. Nevertheless, the study concedes certain limitations, such as the dependence on static datasets and inherent challenges related to the AHP method, including the presumption of criteria independence. Future research avenues are proposed, emphasizing the integration of dynamic data sources, comprehensive socio-cultural impact evaluations, and adopting flexible urban planning methodologies to refine the model’s precision and practicality. Overall, this detailed examination showcases NEOM’s blueprint as an exemplar for future urban environments, illustrating a systematic strategy for developing desert regions that integrate innovation, ecological sustainability, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Rural homestead reform in China: unveiling urbanization dynamics and lessons for sustainable development

The unique experience of land reform in China holds significant implications for other nations in urgent need of liberating and developing their productivity, providing valuable insights and lessons. This study conducted a micro-level analysis of land reform in China, the United States, and India, focusing on the implications for other nations. Surveys were conducted on 459 households in 12 townships in Zhejiang and Sichuan provinces, China. A random sampling approach was employed, selecting 5 sample counties (cities, districts) across Jinhua, Shaoxing, and Chengdu. Within each county (city, district), 2–3 townships were randomly selected, and 2–3 villages were chosen from each township. Subsequently, 10–20 households were randomly surveyed in each village. Statistical analysis using descriptive statistics and the Logistic model revealed robust results with p values below 0.05 for key variables. China’s new urbanization strategy highlights the necessity of reforming the rural homestead system, particularly as higher urbanization rates prompt farmers to withdraw from and transfer their homesteads worldwide. Tailored homestead policies that consider regional disparities in urbanization levels are crucial. A micro-level survey underscores the impact of urbanization, household head identity, and age on farmers’ decisions regarding homestead exit and transfer. Addressing external pressures, efforts should prioritize the revitalization of rural areas and the promotion of sustainable development. This includes enhancing small and medium-sized cities, fostering on-site urbanization, and creating nearby employment opportunities for farmers. However, the effectiveness of these measures varies across regions and is influenced by local levels of marketization. Internally, there is a need to bolster skill training and vocational education for farmers. In summary, the policy recommendations stemming from the micro-level survey in this study offer valuable insights for land reform strategies and sustainable development initiatives, spanning from individual farmers to national policies. They also contribute to a deeper understanding for policymakers, providing a novel analytical perspective.

Evaluating plans for sustainable developmentin Arctic cities.

Cities located in the Arctic often have extreme geographic and environmental contexts and unique sociopolitical and economic trajectories that, when combined with amplified effects of climate change in the region, impact future sustainable development. Well-recognized and standardized sustainable development indicator (SDI) frameworks such as ISO 37120 or UN-Habitat City Prosperity Index are often used to compare data across cities globally using comprehensive sets of indicators. While such indexes help characterize progress toward development and guide short- and long-term decision-making, they often lack relevance to specific contexts or characterize future visions of urban growth. To evaluate the extent of these deficiencies and to provide a comparative analysis of approaches to sustainable urban growth in the Arctic, this paper analyzes city planning documents for five northern cities - Anchorage (USA), Utqiagvik (USA), Reyjavik (ISL), Iqaluit, (CAN), Whitehorse, (CAN) - for goals, targets, and indicators and compare these to thematic areas and indicators defined by ISO 37120:2018 Sustainable Cities and Communities. The results confirm that although international SDI frameworks may be useful for comparative analysis of cities across diverse regions, they exclude important local factors that influence goal-oriented urban sustainability planning strategies employed in the Arctic region.

Indigenous Education System and Environmental Conservation Initiatives for Sustainable Development: Experiences from Nyamwezi in Uyui District, Tanzania

For centuries, African communities in their localities have co-existed with their natural environment in a harmonious manner leading to sustainability of both, the humans and the natural resources base. This co-existence is enabled by what is referred to as the indigenous environmental knowledge system. Indigenous knowledge has always been transferred from one generation to the next through norms, stories and cultural practices. This paper explores Indigenous Education systems and their implications to the conservation practices of the environment in Uyui district in Tabora region. The paper dwells on both primary and secondary data to provide insights on how Indigenous Education Systems embedded with traditional, initiation and local religious affiliation, have been used since time immemorial as one of the indirect initiatives of preserving, protecting and managing natural catchment forests. Random, Snowball and purposive sampling techniques were used to get a total of 120 respondents for this study. The study revealed that local communities in Uyui district have their system of knowledge affiliated with traditions, rituals and taboos which have been used to protect environmental and natural resources since the pre-colonial era up to the post-colonial epoch in Tanzania. The majority of respondents argue that the indigenous knowledge system was practical in protecting the natural resources in the local areas as it was embedded in the taboos, traditional rituals and religious beliefs. Failure or abandonment of the indigenous traditions has led to mismanagement of forest resources and other natural resources. The paper recommends both local and central government incorporate Indigenous knowledge and experiences in their endeavors of protecting and preserving the Environment in Uyui district in Tabora region for sake of sustainable development in Tanzania.

A Study of Vernacular Architecture of Tamil Nadu

This research study examines the rich legacy of vernacular architecture in Tamil Nadu, India, with an emphasis on its historical relevance, architectural features, and sustainable practices. Tamil Nadu's vernacular architecture has a wide spectrum of forms, from major Dravidian temples to simple the village houses. These structures provide not just functional needs, but also represent the communities' cultural identity and religious values. Furthermore, vernacular architecture in Tamil Nadu is highly sensitive to the local environment, with buildings planned to maximize natural ventilation, lighting, and thermal comfort. Traditional building materials like lime, timber, and terracotta are supplied locally, reducing environmental effects, and encouraging sustainability. Focusing on historical documents and academic research this study investigates the cultural, socioeconomic, and environmental influences that have impacted Tamil Nadu's vernacular architecture throughout the centuries. It also examines the current relevance of traditional architectural techniques in the context of growing urbanization and industrialization, highlighting the importance of maintaining and incorporating indigenous knowledge into sustainable development initiatives. Through case studies and comparative research, the article emphasizes the adaptability of Tamil Nadu's vernacular architecture, as well as its potential contributions to modern architectural discourse and sustainable design practices. Greening mineral resources extraction: A pathway to carbon neutrality through energy productivity and institutional reform

Climate change poses a significant challenge, and exploring the role of natural resources for sustainable development initiatives in emerging economies has become an important area of research. Thus, this study explores the influence of natural resource rents (NR), energy productivity (EPY), and institutional quality (IQ) on carbon emissions (CE) for the emerging seven economies. Using the method of moment quantile regression, the results show that NR decreases carbon emissions across all quantiles, exhibiting a declining trend from lower to higher quantiles with a coefficient of −0.124 in the 25th quantile to −0.0387 in the 90th quantile. The study reveals that both energy productivity and renewable energy consumption play crucial roles in mitigating carbon emissions across all quantiles. The results reveal that IQ significantly reduces CE only in the 25th and 50th quantiles. The findings also show that renewable energy consumption's impact in reducing CE increases across quantiles (with a coefficient value of 0.506 in the 25th quantile and 0.595 in the 90th quantile), whereas the influence of energy productivity on emission reduction lessens from lower (−0.590 in the 25th quantile) to higher quantiles (−0.324 in 90th quantile). In contrast, the results reveal that GDP growth enhances carbon emissions across all quantiles, although this trend weakens at higher quantiles. These findings highlight the complex linkage between economic variables and their effects on the environment in the E−7 economies, underlining the significance of sustainable energy practices.

Spatiotemporal effect and influencing factors of the total factor energy efficiency: Evidence from the urban agglomerations in China

Amidst the ongoing global energy quandary, the imperative to augment energy efficiency emerges as a strategic response to counteract energy profligacy and propel sustainable development initiatives. This study aims to assist policymakers in gaining a more accurate understanding of the temporal and spatial complexity and dominant variables of total factor energy efficiency at the urban agglomeration level, thereby providing empirical insights for promoting a comprehensive improvement of the existing energy development framework. Based on the dynamic DEA model, this article utilizes an improved common frontier dynamic super-efficiency SBM model to conduct a quantitative analysis of total factor energy efficiency across 19 urban agglomerations in China. The influence factors of total factor energy efficiency are analyzed using spatial kernel density and geographical detectors at both temporal and factor levels. The research findings indicate that: (1) Total factor energy efficiency primarily fluctuates at a mid to low level, with a general decline to below 0.5 after 2018; (2) Significant regional heterogeneity is evident among Chinese urban agglomerations, displaying a “high in the northwest, low in the southeast” regional characteristic; (3) With time lag, the negative spatial spillover effect among regions further intensifies, becoming heterogeneous when the total factor energy efficiency of local urban agglomerations reaches 1.5 or above; (4) The singular and interactive effects of research funding become the main influencing factors of regional differentiation, and the integration of multiple factors is a key driver for enhancing total factor energy efficiency in the new era.

Evaluating Environmental Sustainability in Africa: The Role of Environmental Taxes, Productive Capacities, and Urbanization Dynamics

This study examines the complex relation among environmental taxes, productive capacities, urbanization, and their collective effects on environmental quality in Africa, drawing on two decades of data from twenty African countries. It situates the study within the broader discourse on sustainable development and economic growth, emphasizing the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) framework to examine the relationship between economic development, characterized by urban expansion and increased productive capacities, and the adoption of environmental taxes amidst the continent’s diverse economic and environmental environments. Using advanced econometric techniques, including the Cross-Section Augmented Autoregressive Distributed Lag (CS-ARDL) model and the Dynamic Common Correlated Effects Mean Group (DCCEMG) estimator, the study addresses data challenges such as cross-sectional dependence and slope heterogeneity. The results provide important insights into the dynamics of environmental quality in relation to economic and urban growth and the role of environmental taxation.
