Sustainability of Asian-American Nonprofit Organizations in U.S. Metropolitan Areas

This article examines the factors for the sustainability of Asian-American nonprofits formed in major U.S. metropolitan areas by 2000. Consistent with studies on other nonprofits, the youngest and smallest among Asian-American organizations are the most vulnerable. The age effect is nonlinear and the marginal effect of an additional year of age on sustainability decreases at higher values of age. Chinese-American nonprofits or Asian-American social service nonprofits are more likely to remain active than other Asian ethnic or other functional types of organizations. More sustainable Asian-American nonprofits are better at managing their finances. A growing Asian-American population also provides these nonprofits with more sustaining power. This study contextualizes the importance of organization age and size as central determinants of nonprofit sustainability. It also demonstrates the relevance of race and ethnicity, organizational function, as well as management capacity for future research.

Nonprofit sustainability during times of uncertainty

AbstractNonprofit organizations in the United States depend on a diverse set of funding streams to sustain their operations. This study examines the ability of nonprofits to leverage funds from the private sector during the current economic downturn within four areas receiving federal funding for community and economic development. Both survey research and individual interviews were used to examine how nonprofits within these areas are incorporating their board members and community leaders to continue services during a time of resource scarcity.

Sustainability of nonprofit organizations: An empirical investigation

Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) contribute to society through their social value creation. They operate in an increasingly turbulent context where building sustainable organizations has emerged as a critical need. Past authors have discussed this important issue in a fragmented manner. Using multiple case studies of socially entrepreneurial NPOs, this paper examines how the need for building a sustainable organization has impacted on the strategy focus of the nonprofit organization. The findings suggest that in response to an increased competitive environment, NPOs have been forced to adopt an organizational sustainability focus in both strategic and operational levels of management. The study makes a strong contribution to current debate in social entrepreneurship and to a broader agenda concerned with developing sustainable organizations. Whilst the findings have important implications for theory and current practice, the paper concludes with suggestions for future research at the interstices of these areas.

The Struggle to Survive: The Power of Partnerships in the Quest for Nonprofit Sustainability

This article provides information about a Youth Service Bureau’s (YSB) experience in collaborating with court officials to expand services and a subsequent funding base. YSBs, like many other nonprofit human service agencies, have found that partnering with local governmental officials, especially judges, can enhance sustainability. Implications for strengthening partnerships between local nonprofits and county judges are discussed.
