THIS volume contains, among papers on a wide range of subjects, a symposium on "The New Physics and Metaphysical Materialism" in which the late Prof. Susan Stebbing, Sir James Jeans, Mr. R. B. Braithwaite and Prof. E. T. Whittaker took part (see Nature, June 19, 1943, p. 686). Prof. Stebbing in her life-time was convinced that Eddington and Jeans used their standing as scientific men to put across to the public metaphysical views which were thoroughly unsound. In her contribution to this symposium she argues that "the new physics does not imply idealism" (p. 184). If Sir James Jeans thinks it does, it is because he argues, erroneously, that because the wave-picture of the universe is essentially mental, the universe it pictures must be so also. A Modern Elementary Logic

THE author's aim was to provide a text-book primarily for first-year students reading logic at the universities. But the reason for that in the content and emphasis of her book which differentiates it from the usual manuals, and to which the appellation of modern in its title directs attention, may not be immediately apparent to one unacquainted with the change of orientation and the nature of the work resulting therefrom which mark the advancement of the subject since the earliest years of this century. Prof. Susan Stebbing

DR. L. SUSAN STEBBING, since 1933 professor of philosophy in the University of London (Bedford College), died on September 11 at the age of fifty-seven at Tintagel in Cornwall. Educated at Girton College, Cambridge, she read for both parts of the Historical Tripos and for Part I of the Moral Sciences Tripos. In 1912 she graduated M.A. in philosophy, with mark of distinction, at London. After acting as director of moral science studies at Girton and Newnham, Dr. Stebbing was appointed successively lecturer, reader and professor in philosophy in the University of London.

Ideals and Illusions

THIS book, which is written by a philosopher, deserves to be widely read. It could be used by ‘advanced groups’ studying the problems of the post–war world. The Philosophy of Sir James Jeans

IN the December number of Adult Education, Prof. L. Susan Stebbing subjects Sir James Jeans's recent presidential address to the British Association to searching criticism. She complains that he has rated the intelligence of his hearers and readers too low by presenting them with contradictory statements concerning Nature, space and time, and knowledge. Some of the questions raised were referred to in our leading article on the address which was published in NATURE of September 8 last, but Prof. Stebbing makes no attempt to penetrate to the vital ideas which were expressed, however imperfectly, by Sir James Jeans; she contents herself with pointing out the imperfections. As destructive criticism, the paper is of value, though, in the absence of counter-balancing constructive thought, it achieves less than its full potentialities. Prof. Stebbing fortunately does not make the common error of supposing that a single statement, by however distinguished a physicist, represents the unanimous view of ‘physics'. “The point to be maintained here,“she says, “is that these cloudy speculations cannot properly be regarded as ‘philosophical implications' of the new ‘physics'.“This goes far to justify what might otherwise be construed as a philosopher's attack on the philosophical tendencies of modern physics.

Logic in Practice

THIS very able little book goes a long way to prove that logic is a human science, and not merely a more or less coherent collection of dry and irrelevant dogmas. The grounds of our beliefs, the purpose of thinking, the importance of form, and the fundamental principles of deduction and induction are analysed and explained in a way that should make their understanding easy and interesting. What adds to the value of Dr. Stebbing s book is the choice of the examples, which should make nonsense of the frequent reproach that formal logic is an idle game. Logic in Practice. By Prof. L.
