Exposure to state violence and substance use

We analyze whether exposure to state violence affects substance use at the individual level. In doing so, we bring together the political science and public health literatures on the effects of violence, analyzing an outcome that is neglected in political science and a type of violence that remains understudied in public health. We leverage a unique panel study, the Population Council’s Survey of Young People in Egypt (SYPE), to test whether rates of substance use are higher among those who were exposed to violence during the country’s 2011 revolution, a moment of intense state violence against civilians. Results demonstrate that direct exposure to state violence increases substance use; respondents exposed to violence are significantly more likely to use drugs, alcohol, and tobacco than those who were not. Our findings are robust to specifications that control for respondents’ reported exposure to state violence prior to the revolution and substance use among family and friends, factors identified in medical research as key predictors. Our study sheds light on a fundamental predicament of authoritarian governance and the downstream effects of state violence.

The Migration Intentions of Young Egyptians

This study examines the migration intentions of young people in Egypt before and after the 2011 revolution, driven by three sets of factors: (1) individual demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, (2) household characteristics, and (3) community characteristics and political and civic participation. Logistic regression models are applied to study the determinants of intentions to live, study, or work abroad among young Egyptians (defined as individuals aged 18 to 29), using data from the Survey of Young People in Egypt (SYPE) conducted in 2009 (N = 8488) and in 2014 (N = 5885). The surveys are nationally representative, covering all governorates in Egypt. The analysis indicates that respondents’ age, gender, marital status, and employment status play a significant role in shaping migration intentions. After the 2011 revolution, the effects are dependent upon economic and institutional conditions. The employment status affects the migration intention of young people in 2009; but the effects become insignificant in 2014. Moreover, respondents who have participated in political and voluntary activities are more likely to express migration intentions. Pollution levels in the community are also positively correlated with the intention to migrate. The results indicate that those who expressed migration intentions are a selective group in terms of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Our findings have policy relevance because knowledge and understanding of migration intentions and their determinants can be used to assess and develop scenarios about future migration.

The effects of political protests on youth human capital and well-being in Egypt

Protests are one of the most common expressions of modern political conflict, and the wave of demonstrations that marked the onset of the Arab Spring contributed to a global increase in protest activity. Yet few studies have examined the effects of exposure to protests on population well-being even though such exposure may have profound and lasting effects, especially if experienced at critical stages of development over the life course. The aim of our study is to estimate the effects of exposure to political protests on the human capital accumulation and well-being of youth during the tumultuous political transition experienced in Egypt from 2011 to 2014. For a nationally representative panel of youth captured in the 2009 and 2013/2014 waves of the Survey of Young People in Egypt (SYPE), we exploit exogenous geospatial variation in the occurrence of political protests from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED) Project to estimate individual-level changes in social trust, uncertainty, education, and health outcomes for youth exposed to protests. In our panel, 31.1% of the sample lived in districts where riots or protests occurred. Exposure to protests increased overall perceptions of uncertainty about the future. Young men ever exposed to protests were slightly more likely to report good overall health, but experienced sizable worsening in mental health compared to young women ever exposed. Differences by own and family participation in protest events were found for perceptions of uncertainty and mental health. In the aftermath of the Arab Spring and other mass protest movements around the globe, these findings highlight the importance of examining the population-level impacts of different forms of political conflict, particularly as substantial numbers of youth in Middle East and North Africa and elsewhere progress to adulthood under conditions of political instability.

Young people school-to-work transition in the aftermath of the Arab Spring

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the school-to-work transition of young people from subsequent school exit cohorts between 2001 and 2012 in Egypt, thus, presenting an early evidence on the adjustments of the labor market in terms of patterns of youth transition to a first job following the 2011 Egyptian uprising.Design/methodology/approachThe analysis compares the early employment outcomes of those who left school after the January 25, 2011 uprising to that of those who left before 2011. The authors also separately control for the cohorts who left school in 2008 and 2009, in an attempt to disentangle any labor market adjustments that might have happened following the financial crisis, and before the revolution. Using novel and unexploited representative data from the 2014 Survey of Young People in Egypt (SYPE), the authors estimate the probability of transition to any first job within 18 months from leaving education and that of the transition to a good-quality job, controlling for the year of school exit. The authors also estimate the hazard of finding a first job and a good-quality job using survival analysis.FindingsSchool exit cohorts of 2008–2009 (following the financial crisis) and those of 2011–2012 (in the aftermath of the 2011 uprisings) experienced a significantly higher likelihood of finding a first job within 18 months than that of the cohorts of 2001–2007. However, this came at the expense of the quality of job, conditional on having found a first job. The results of the hazard model show that school leavers after 2008 who were not able to transition to a job shortly after leaving school experienced longer unemployment spells than their peers who left school before 2007. The odds of finding a good-quality job appears to decline with time spent in non-employment or in a bad-quality first job.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to a limited, yet growing, literature on how school-to-work transition evolved during the global financial crisis and the Egyptian 2011 revolution. Using data from SYPE 2014, the most recent representative survey conducted in Egypt on youth and not previously exploited to study youth school-to-work transition, the paper investigates the short-term adjustments of the youth labor market opportunities during that critical period of Egypt and the region’s history.

Impact of Socio-Demographic Characteristics on Attitude of Ever Married Women Towards Gender Based Violence in Egypt: Secondary Analysis of SYPE Data, 2014

AbstractBackground: To identify the impact of socio demographic factors on attitude of ever married female toward violence against women in Egypt.Material and Methods: Data from Survey of Young People in Egypt (SYPE), 2014 were used in this study. Attitude towards Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and socio-demographic characteristics of 3,226 ever married females aged 13-35 years were selected for secondary and advanced analysis.Results: Only a small percentage (28.7%) of all ever married female youth rejected gender-based violence. The rejection of GBV was increased with increasing the wealth quintile from the lowest to the richest level (p<0.001). There were no statistical significant differences between respondents who accepted the GBV attitude and those who reject it as regard the employment status (p=0.442). There was more rejection of GBV with increasing educational level of respond-ents and their parents from illiterate to university or higher level (p<0.001). Agreement to GBV increased by increasing the number of brothers and sisters (p=0.021).Conclusion: Sociodemographic characteristics play an important role on the attitude of ever married women towards violence against women.Recommendations: Parents, educational institutions, health care providers (e.g. pre-marital counseling), civil society (mass media), community and religious leaders need to engage in more open dialog with young people to educate them about GBV, enforce positive attitude (multi-sectoral interventions) and support economic and social development.

Exposure of Early Adolescent Girls to Genital Mutilation / Cutting : Secondary Analysis of Survey of Young People in Egypt

Background: female genital mutilation/cuutting (FGM/C) is one of the main social problems affecting adolescent girls in Egypt. FGM/C has many health hazards affecting adolescents later in their lives. Researches related to FGM/C in Egypt focused mainly on prevalence and causes of FGM/C among women. However, there was little attention in exploring this problem among early adolescent girls. Aim: the objectives of this study included determining the prevalence and correlates of FGM/C among early adolescents in Egypt. Subjects and Methods: a secondary analysis of a nationally representative stratified multistage cluster sample using early adolescent girls using Survey of Young People in Egypt (SYPE) data 2009. Descriptive analysis was done using univariate & bivariate analysis to identify prevalence of FGM/C in Egypt among early adolescents and associated factors. Correlates of FGM/C were identified using logistic regression analysis with 95% confidence interval and P <0.05 as a significant level. Software used was SPSS version 20. Results: nearly two thirds of 10–14 years old girls in Egypt were exposed to FGM/C.FGM/C was carried on the majority of them by medical personnel (70.7%) at home or at private medical facilities. Older age, living in rural areas, and belonging to lowest wealth quintile were the main predictors of FGM\C exposure. Conclusions: FGM/C is still a major threat to early adolescent girls in Egypt especially by medical personnel among rural and poor families. Emphasizing strict legal sanctions against physicians performing the procedures as well as against responsible parents is very crucial in Egypt.
