Geodetic and topographical surveys in Western Australia

Abstract The early navigators made the first surveys to fix the coast line of Western Australia and, from the inception of the Colony in 1829, the surveyors on exploration and general land settlement and development surveys made the measurements and took the observations from which, in addition to other information obtained from geological surveys, engineering projects and surveys by the Royal Australian Survey Corps, the maps, lithos and plans for the State have been drawn.

The Kilo-Yard

Abstract Mapping Australia has received greatly added impetus as a result of the war, and the triangulation work carried out by the Australian Survey Corps has reached a stage where, in many districts, it will now be possible for governmental and semi-governmental survey authorities to base their future survey work upon the Survey Corps' triangulation. In addition to this plan systems may now be laid down and plotted by means of the grid values of survey control points in terms of their plane rectangular co-ordinates as computed by the Survey Corps for a transverse Mercator projection.

Abstract On Friday, 1st October, 1943, there assembled at the headquarters of the Survey Directorate, Toorak, Melbourne, a party of associates and friends of Lt.-Col. John J. Raisbeck, to wish him good luck and good health in the years to follow his recent retirement, which took place officially in July, 1943.

Air reconnaissance for 1st Order Triangulation over Eastern Victoria

Abstract The programme of work upon which No. 4 Section, Aust. Survey Corps, is now engaged consists of the chain of 1st Order Triangulation connecting the N.S.W. State Triangulation in the neighbourhood of Mounts Pilot and Tingy Ringy with the Victorian Base Line at Werribee.

The present methods of the Australian survey Corps

Abstract I do not wish to delve into the history of the Australian Survey Corps, but rather to give you a description of the methods being used at present. Time will not permit of this being given in very great detail if I am to touch on each phase of the work.

Hog Wallows

I HAVE been watching with some interest the progress of the discussion on the “Hog Wallows” of California, which has been in progress in your paper during nearly all of this year. When a member of the California Geological Survey Corps, I had numerous opportunities of studying the phenomena in that and the adjoining states of Oregon and Nevada; more especially in the southern parts of the desert. There they are developed on the largest scale, and there their origin is obvious.
