Experimental study on heat transfer performance enhancement of pulsating heat pipes induced by surfactants

Pulsating heat pipe (PHP) is considered as a promising technique to address the thermal dissipation issues in micro-electronic devices, but its heat transfer performance needs to be further enhanced urgently. In this study, the PHP comprehensive performance experimental system was established. Then, the influence of surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) aqueous solution on the heat transfer performance of PHP was experimentally investigated and the visualization of PHP with surfactant was also accomplished. Additionally, based on Marangoni effect and surface tension, a comprehensive analysis was conducted on the impact mechanism of surfactants on PHP. The experimental results indicated that the oscillatory disturbance of the liquid slug inside the PHP is enhanced by the addition of SDS, and the resulting pressure imbalance and temperature difference enhance the directional flow of the working fluid. Meanwhile, under the operating conditions of 30 W working thermal power and the solution concentration of 0.001 wt%, the thermal resistance of PHP was reduced by 30.7 % compared with that of deionized water (DI water). This indicated that the working fluid with low concentration SDS could increase the area of liquid film and reduce the thermal resistance, which is induced by the surface tension and Marangoni effect due to the uneven distribution of surfactants. However, the thermal resistance of PHP with the SDS concentration of 0.2 wt% is higher than that of DI. This means that high concentration of SDS would deteriorate the startup characteristics and the heat transfer performance of PHP. Therefore, high concentrations of surfactants should be avoided from practical application of PHP.

Green Extraction of Carotenoids from Tomato By-products Using Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate

AbstractTomato peel by-products contain high levels of lycopene, which has traditionally been extracted using organic solvents. This research focuses on the optimisation of a sustainable method to obtain a lycopene-rich extract using the biodegradable anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). A Plackett–Burman experimental design was used to investigate the effect of seven factors on the extraction of carotenoids from tomato peels using sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS volume and concentration, homogenisation intensity and time, sonication phase, extraction time and ultracentrifugation intensity). Based on the responses of total carotenoid extraction, the SDS volume, the use of ultrasound and the extraction time significantly influenced the extraction yield and were selected for optimisation using a Box–Wilson experimental design. The final green extraction protocol (1 g sample + 11.9 ml SDS 0.3%, homogenisation at 13,500 rpm for 2 min, ultrasound phase, agitation for 8.2 h and ultracentrifugation) was selected after quantification of total carotenoids by UV–VIS and HPLC-DAD. Finally, we used nuclear magnetic resonance to demonstrate a high lycopene purity in the carotenoid extract obtained. Furthermore, using transmission electron microscopy, we observed the presence of intact chromoplasts in the extract, protecting the carotenoids from the exposure to external agents. Thus, this work reports an optimised method for the sustainable extraction of carotenoids and demonstrates the viability of the degradable solvent SDS for the extraction of liposoluble bioactive compounds, like carotenoids and mainly lycopene. The lycopene extract could be used for the technological and nutritional enrichment of new foods and/or the design of nutraceuticals.

Configuration Evolution of a Particle Raft with a Preprepared Crack Driven by the Diffusion of a Surfactant.

In the present study, the morphology evolution of a particle raft with a preprepared crack, which is caused by injecting the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) into water, is demonstrated. Experimental results on the process of crack closure and configuration evolution are captured and are in excellent agreement with the numerical simulations. Then a surface diffusion model on SDS is proposed to quantify the detailed physical scenario. The surface diffusion factor is determined through the shooting method based on the experimental result of dynamic surface tension. As a result, the analytical solution for the SDS concentration distribution is given. The theoretical result on the dependence relationship between the profile shrinkage ratio and the time variable is consistent with the experimental result. At last, the relation between the initial surface tension difference of SDS and the profile shrinkage ratio is obtained in the light of experiments and dimensional analysis, and the two results are very close. These analyses provide a comprehensive understanding of the coupling between chemicals and mechanical behaviors of soft matter, and the modulation of defects in the particle raft provides some inspiration for engineering new devices at the microscale.

An innovative method for highly-efficient fabrication of carbon fiber precursors via acrylonitrile emulsion copolymerization coupled to a chemical oscillator

A new synthetic protocol to produce the carbon fiber precursor polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and its block copolymers with polyethylene glycol (PEG) is proposed here. The constant flux of radical species produced at low concentrations during the oscillating Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction was properly exploited to initiate the radical polymerization reaction. Compared with conventional methods, this oscillating initiation decreases the probability of chain termination, thus favouring the production of high molecular weight polymers, and it does not require an inert atmosphere and elevated temperatures to be produced. The solubility of the polymeric chains during the polymerization reaction was improved by adding the anionic micelle-forming surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). Following the initiation step, short oligomer chains are able to overcome the micellar interface, thereby reaching a favourable environment for the increase of the polymeric chains, thus strongly contributing to the increase of the molecular weight of the fibers’ precursors. The synthesis was conducted by adding the monomer acrylonitrile (AN) to the unperturbed and PEG-perturbed BZ system after the onset of the oscillations, in the absence and presence of increasing amounts of the SDS surfactant. The potentiometric technique was utilized to detect the dynamics of the oscillatory reaction. Preliminarily, the response of the BZ system to the monomer addition was investigated. Additional information was provided from the study of the effect of the SDS and PEG concentration on the dynamics of the BZ reaction during AN polymerization, thus obtaining a deepening in the understanding of the BZ mechanism. The characterization of the obtained polymers and copolymers, by melting point measurements, molecular weight determinations, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, and thermal treatments, indicated that the proposed synthetic method produces carbon fiber precursors with high molecular weight and good thermal stability. The addition of the surfactant was revealed as a good method to improve and/or finely tune the precursor molecular weight. The proposed synthetic protocol represents a valuable alternative to conventional methods to produce high-performant precursors of carbon fibers.

SDS induces amorphous, amyloid-fibril, and alpha-helical structures in the myoglobin in a concentration-dependent manner

Amyloid fibrils have been linked to a number of diseases. Surfactants imitate plasma membrane lipids and induce amyloid fibrils. This study examined the effects of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) at pH 4.5 on equine skeletal muscle myoglobin (E-Mb). To analyze the effect of SDS on aggregation and amyloid-fibril formation to E-Mb, we used various spectroscopic techniques (turbidity, light scattering, intrinsic fluorescence, ThT fluorescence, and circular dichroism (CD)), electrophoretic, and microscopic techniques. Turbidity, SDS-PAGE, and light scattering all indicated the formation of E-Mb aggregates at SDS concentrations ranging from 0.2 mM to 1.0 mM. In the presence of 0.4 mM SDS, far-UV CD and TEM data indicate that E-MB forms amorphous aggregates. ThT binding, Far-UV CD, and TEM findings indicate that E-Mb forms amyloid-like structures in the presence of 0.6–1.0 mM SDS. However, no aggregation was seen at SDS concentrations above 1 mM. In the presence of high SDS concentrations (> 1 mM), the E-Mb exhibited native-like α-helical structure. As a result, SDS exhibited three distinct behaviors: amorphous aggregates, amyloid-fibrils, and helix-inducer. These findings also shed light on how amyloid fibrils are formed when anionic surfactants are introduced, which is a significant takeaway.

Insight into trichloroethene removal in alkaline condition with the presence of surfactant based on persulfate system

Trichloroethene (TCE) degradation was investigated in Fe(II)/citric acid (CA) activated persulfate (PS) system containing surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Only 37.7% removal of TCE was achieved at PS/Fe(II)/CA/TCE molar ratio of 40/20/20/1 in the presence of 2.3 g L−1 SDS with pH unadjusted (pH = 2.96). However, this result was significantly increased to 81% after adjusting the initial solution pH = 9.0. The presence of SDS inhibited TCE degradation and this inhibitory effect was initially increased and then declined with SDS concentration increase from 0 to 9.2 g L−1. Radical scavenger experiments revealed that the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) contributed to TCE degradation were HO• and SO4−•, while less contribution was owed to O2−•. The intermediates of SDS were identified with GC-MS and possible decomposition pathway of SDS was proposed. The performance of TCE degradation in other solution matrixes were investigated. Actual groundwater tests showed that PS/Fe(II)/CA system possessed huge potential in remediating groundwater contaminated by TCE with SDS presence. This research found that alkaline condition was more favorable for TCE degradation in PS/Fe(II)/CA system in the presence of SDS and the possible reasons for this phenomenon were explored from various aspects.

Spectroscopic, conductivity and voltammetric investigations of interaction of sulfamethoxazole alone and in combination with trimethoprim with self-assembled structures

The demand and urgency of new drug design and discovery is facing new challenges in the wake of spread and persistence of serious global threat of antibiotic resistance. One of the major hurdles in the development of new drugs that are more aqueous soluble and passively diffusible is the paucity of knowledge regarding their physicochemical interactions with biological membranes. Being chemical-mimics of biomembranes, surfactant-based micellar systems present excellent pseudo-membrane models to study biophysical interactions of drugs with biological membranes in vitro. The present research focuses on physicochemical interaction of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) alone and in combination with trimethoprim (TMP) with cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). UV–visible spectroscopy, electrical conductivity and cyclic voltammetric techniques were employed to quantitate different drug-surfactant interaction parameters. UV–visible spectroscopic was used to evaluate critical micelle concentration (CMC) of CTAB and SDS in the presence of SMZ, TMP and their binary mixture in aqueous medium (pH 7.0). Differential absorption technique was used to determine partition coefficient (Kc ) and binding constant (Kb ) of SMZ and (SMZ + TMP) mixture with ionic micelles. Thermodynamic parameters of micellization such as and of CTAB and SDS in the presence SMZ and its mixed form with TMP were calculated in deionized water. Further, voltammetric investigations depict the strong binding of SMZ and its TMP mixture with CTAB micelles relative to SDS micelles.

Single-File Translocation Dynamics of SDS-Denatured, Whole Proteins through Sub-5 nm Solid-State Nanopores.

The ability to routinely identify and quantify the complete proteome from single cells will greatly advance medicine and basic biology research. To meet this challenge of single-cell proteomics, single-molecule technologies are being developed and improved. Most approaches, to date, rely on the analysis of polypeptides, resulting from digested proteins, either in solution or immobilized on a surface. Nanopore biosensing is an emerging single-molecule technique that circumvents surface immobilization and is optimally suited for the analysis of long biopolymers, as has already been shown for DNA sequencing. However, proteins, unlike DNA molecules, are not uniformly charged and harbor complex tertiary structures. Consequently, the ability of nanopores to analyze unfolded full-length proteins has remained elusive. Here, we evaluate the use of heat denaturation and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to facilitate electrokinetic nanopore sensing of unfolded proteins. Specifically, we characterize the voltage dependence translocation dynamics of a wide molecular weight range of proteins (from 14 to 130 kDa) through sub-5 nm solid-state nanopores, using a SDS concentration below the critical micelle concentration. Our results suggest that proteins' translocation dynamics are significantly slower than expected, presumably due to the smaller nanopore diameters used in our study and the role of the electroosmotic force opposing the translocation direction. This allows us to distinguish among the proteins of different molecular weights based on their dwell time and electrical charge deficit. Given the simplicity of the protein denaturation assay and circumvention of the tailor-made necessities for sensing protein of different folded sizes, shapes, and charges, this approach can facilitate the development of a whole proteome identification technique.

SDS‐induced amyloid fibrillation of acidic fibroblast growth factor

Fibroblast growth factors and their receptors regulate a broad range of biological functions from developmental processes during embryogenesis to various physiological roles in the adult state, including regulation of angiogenesis, wound healing, and metabolism. hFGF‐1 also plays a key role in neuroprotection against neurotoxicity in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is widely used as a model for induction of amyloid‐like fibrils. In this context, we examined the effects of SDS on FGF1 using a variety of biophysical techniques including, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The secondary structure of hFGF1 was monitored by incubating hFGF1 with different concentrations of SDS utilizing the far‐UV CD (190‐250 nm) spectroscopy. We found that from 0.08‐0.15mM concentration of SDS, the negative peak at ~206 shifted gradually towards ~212nm while at 0.2mM concentration, far‐UV CD spectra of hFGF‐1 exhibit significant changes with striking shifting of negative peak ~212 nm to ~218 nm and disappearance of positive band at ~228nm which signifies substantial loss of native β‐barrel structure. The aggregation of hFGF‐1 is detected systematically by observing the absorbance at 350nm. The results indicate that at 0.2mM SDS, hFGF1 highly aggregates. In addition to far‐UV CD spectra and turbidity measurement, the influence of SDS on the tertiary structural changes of hFGF1 was studied by mentoring the intrinsic fluorescence of hFGF1 incubated with various concentrations of SDS. The study reveals that 0.2mM SDS is the concentration that affect mostly on the tertiary structure of hFGF1 because of the highest ratio of 305 to 350 at this concentration. Thioflavin‐T (ThT) assay for quantification of Amyloid‐like fibril formation was used to investigate the concentration of SDS that induce maximum hfGF1 fibrils. This study showed that 0.2mM SDS is the concentration that induced the optimum formation of fibrils hFGF1. Based on the results of these experiments, we wanted to do more investigation to achieve more evidence about the effect of SDS on the fibrils hFGF1. Therefore, morphological study by TEM was employed to examine the effect of 0.2mM SDS and 0.6mM SDS on the formation of fibrils hFGF1. At incubation for 1‐hour fibrillar aggregates of hFGF‐1 with average diameter at about 20‐25nm is observed in presence of 0.2mM SDS. All the previous results using biophysical techniques indicate that SDS induces formation of fibrils hFGF1 concentration which assist to better understanding about the causative of the fibrils hFGF1 which lead to find a remedy for the disease related with it.

Synthesis of two-dimensional WS2/nickel nanocomposites via electroforming for high-performance micro/nano mould tools

To reduce the adhesion and friction between polymer and mould surfaces during polymeric micro/nano structures replication, we have used tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanosheets to fabricate high-performance nickel/WS2 nanocomposite mould using electroforming. However, the aggregation of WS2 nanosheets in the electroforming solution is a critical issue that influences the mechanical and tribological properties of the mould. In this study, we first propose a new strategy of combining anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to achieve uniform dispersion and incorporation of WS2 nanosheets in the electroformed nickel mould. Our results indicate that appropriately designing the structure of CTAB-SDS complex can achieve a stable WS2 dispersion, contributing to the uniform co-deposition of WS2 nanosheets into nickel mould. The combination of high concentration of CTAB and SDS (1.0 g/L CTAB and 1.0 g/L SDS) significantly improved the dispersibility and incorporation of WS2 into the nickel matrix, compared to individual SDS or CTAB. Consequently, the maximum hardness enhanced by 350% from 284 HV for pure nickel to 1280 HV for nickel/WS2 nanocomposite mould, along with the coefficient of friction (COF) against the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) pin reducing from 0.75 to 0.31. It is also found that CTAB promotes particle encapsulation while SDS improves the particle dispersion but cannot control the particle incorporation. The surface wettability of nickel/WS2 mould altered to hydrophobicity from hydrophilicity of nickel mould, where the adhesion-induced wear caused by polymer pin significantly reduced. Moreover, the surface roughness did not change much with the incorporation of WS2 into the mould, which is acceptable for mould applications. Finally, the nickel/WS2 nanocomposite mould was successfully fabricated via electroforming and its self-lubricating properties was validated by micro hot embossing PMMA microfluidic chips with good surface quality.

Study on the Effects of Biologically Active Amino Acids on the Micellization of Anionic Surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) at Different Temperatures

The micellar properties of the anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) are modified by the biologically active amino acids. Amino acids (AAs) have experienced a variety of interactions and are proposed to influence SDS micelles due to their nominated hydrophobic interactions. The present study determines the critical micellar concentration (CMC) of SDS in aqueous solutions as well as in amino aqueous solutions. Three amino acids (glutamic acid, histidine, and tryptophan) are considered here. The conductometric measurements were carried out using a wide range of SDS concentrations at different temperatures. Surface tension experiments have also been applied to estimate many surface parameters including surface excess concentration (Γmax), surface occupied area per surfactant molecule (Amin), surface tension at CMC (γcmc), surface pressure at CMC (Πcmc) and Gibbs free energy of adsorption (∆Gads°), enthalpy ∆Hm° and the critical packing parameter (CPP). Interestingly, CMC values of SDS in water and in aqueous amino acids estimated by the surface tension method are comparable with the corresponding values obtained by the conductance method. The thermodynamic parameters of SDS micellization were also evaluated in both presence and absence of AAs. The additives of AAs work to reduce the CMC values, as well as the SDS thermodynamic parameters. This reduction is highly dependent on the hydrophobicity of the AA side chain. Negative values of ∆Gm°, ∆Hm° elucidate that micellization of SDS in the presence of amino acids is thermodynamically spontaneous and exothermic. The outcomes here might be utilized for pharmaceutical applications to stabilize proteins and inhibit protein aggregation.

SDS modulates amyloid fibril formation and conformational change in succinyl-ConA at low pH

The anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is homologous to the cellular membrane lipids, and is known to stimulate amyloid fibrillation in several proteins. However, the mechanism by which SDS influences aggregation and structural changes in succinylated protein has not been determined. In this study, we observed the effects of variable SDS concentrations on succinyl-ConA aggregation at pH 3.5 and proposed a possible mechanism of SDS-induced succinyl-ConA aggregation. We used several biophysical techniques to identify the changes caused by SDS. Our results suggest that SDS stimulates succinyl-ConA aggregation in a concentration-dependent manner. From turbidity measurements, it was evident that a very low concentration (<0.1 mM) of SDS did not induce succinyl-ConA aggregation and proteins remained soluble. However, aggregations were observed at 0.1–2.5 mM SDS, which then dissipated at SDS concentrations above 2.5 mM. Far-UV CD results suggest that the β-sheet secondary structure of succinyl-ConA transformed into the cross-β-sheet structure in the presence of aggregating SDS concentrations. Notably, at SDS concentrations above 2.5 mM, the succinyl-ConA β-sheet transformed into an α-helical structure. The SDS-induced succinyl-ConA amyloid-like aggregates were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We propose that SDS modulates amyloid fibrillation in succinyl-ConA due to electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions and succinylation affects SDS-induced succinyl-ConA aggregation.

A systematic study on the effects of synthesis conditions of polyamide selective layer on the CO2/N2 separation of thin film composite polyamide membranes

AbstractDifferent top layer fabrication methods (amine‐first, acid‐first, spin coating), organic phase solvents (hexane, heptane, mixed hexane/heptane), acid acceptors (triethylamine, sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide), and surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate concentrations (0, 0.05, and 0.1 wt%) were utilized to fabricate thin film composite polyamide membranes for CO2/N2 separation. The results, according to an L9 orthogonal array of Taguchi approach, showed that employing acid‐first method increases both CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity of the membranes at a feed gas pressure of 3 bars. On the other hand, sodium hydroxide, and triethylamine should be used, as acid acceptors, to maximize CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity, respectively. Moreover, the use of hexane solvent and 0 wt% surfactant led to maximum permeance, while, hexane solvent and 0.1 wt% surfactant were needed to reach the highest selectivity. The above level setting of synthesis parameters also resulted in the minimum sensitivity of the fabrication process to the noise factors effects. As shown by the analysis of variance, acid acceptor, and organic solvent types were the most influential parameters on CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity, respectively. The effects of fabrication method and surfactant concentration, as single factors, on permeation/selectivity responses were also investigated.

Enhanced trichloroethylene degradation in the presence of surfactant: Pivotal role of Fe(II)/nZVI catalytic synergy in persulfate system

Trichloroethylene (TCE) removal performance in non-ionic surfactant Tween-80 (TW-80) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) involved solution by Fe(II) activated persulfate (PS) was investigated through the strengthening of nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI). 99.5% removal of TCE could be obtained at the PS/Fe(II)/nZVI/TCE molar ratio of 8/4/4/1 with 1.0 critical micelle concentration (CMC) of TW-80 presence (13 mg L−1), while this value was slightly decreased to 88.3% at the molar ratio of 40/20/20/1 with 1.0 CMC of SDS presence (2.3 g L−1) in 180 min. The addition of nZVI significantly promoted TCE degradation, while TW-80 or SDS definitely inhibited TCE removal. Further, TCE removal declined with TW-80 or SDS concentration increasing from 0 to 10 CMC, and continuously decreased at 20 CMC of TW-80 but elevated TCE removal at 20 CMC of SDS. Tests of radical scavengers revealed that HO and SO4− contributed a major part while O2− had less contribution to TCE degradation in PS/Fe(II)/nZVI system. The dichlorination of TCE in PS/Fe(II)/nZVI system was 94.5% with TW-80 and 97.2% with SDS. In addition, TCE (with TW-80) removal was decreased with the initial pH increase from 3.0 to 11.0, while TCE (with SDS) degradation was always beyond 83% in the initial pH change from 3.0 to 11.0. Moreover, the effects of inorganic anions (Cl−, HCO3−) in the solution were evaluated. Experimental results using the actual groundwater revealed the excellent availability of PS/Fe(II)/nZVI system in remediating TCE contaminated field involved with TW-80 or SDS surfactants. In summary, these findings provide a new direction in remediating groundwater from contaminated sites polluted by chlorinated organic solvents after pretreatment by surfactant solubilization.

The effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate and dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride on the kinetics of CO2 hydrate formation in the presence of tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide for carbon capture applications

Tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB) is a commonly used promoter to moderate CO2 hydrate phase equilibrium. However, it decreases CO2 gas uptake. In this work, the effects of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) on the kinetics of CO2–TBAB hydrate formation are investigated. Experiments in a batch reactor at the same initial pressure of CO2/N2 gas mixtures are conducted in systems of 10-wt% TBAB and varied SDS concentrations of 0–1500 ppm and DTAC concentrations of 0–0.6 wt%. Induction time, normalized gas uptake, split fraction and separation factor are the metrics to study in this paper. The results show that the hydrate formation is most accelerated with the addition of SDS, and the best CO2 separation performance is achieved in the presence of DTAC. 10-wt%TBAB with 0.1-wt% DTAC is found to be the optimum recipe, and it leads to the same amount of CO2 uptake at 283.15 K as that in a pure water system at 276.45 K under the same initial pressure. CO2 uptake is also found to increase with a higher subcooling. Furthermore, the intensive uptake period of different systems is determined for practical applications of hydrate-based carbon capture.

Effect of the Tensioactive Agent SDS on Extender’s Boar Semen Viability after Thawing

Effects of the surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) on the motility and viability of boar semen after thawing were evaluated. For such purpose, semen of twelve adult boars was collected twice a week, the rich portion of this semen was separated and frozen with different concentrations of SDS (0; 2.5; 5; 10; 20 and 40 mM). For freezing the semen was subjected to a cooling curve in an Ice Cube Freezer with a programmed curve as follows: From 5 to -5°C to -6°C/min, from -5 to -80 to -40°C/min in which semen was for 30 minutes. From -80 to -150 semen was cooled at a slope of -60°C/min being then plunged in liquid nitrogen. After collecting, before and after freezing/thawing, semen was evaluated for pH, cell concentration, viability and motility, as well as the percentage of normal sperm cells and agglutination level. Results indicated that before freezing sperm quality obtained from the different boars was always alkaline and very similar among boars. On average, pH was 7.50±0.27 ranging from 7.05 to 7.79 Viability, motility and agglutination level was respectively 62.7±9.9%: 4.8%±0.3 and 9.3%±1.82. After thawing, the best sperm quality was obtained when the semen was frozen with an SDS concentration of 0.2% W/V, in which values of viability reached 30.1% (±3.7). Based on the results one can conclude that SDS can be used to preserve boar semen for long periods, retaining semen quality after thawing.

Study on the Extraction Technology of Candida antarctica Lipase B by Foam Separation

Candida antarctica Lipase B (CALB) has a wide range of applications in many fields. In this study, Pichia pastoris was used to express CALB for fermentation tank culture. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used as a surfactant, and foam separation technology was used to explore the best experimental conditions for the harvest of CALB. The results showed that the optimal technological conditions for the foam separation and recovery of CALB were as follows: liquid volume was 150 mL, separating gas velocity was 600 mL/min, pH value was 7, and surfactant SDS concentration was 0.5 mg/mL. Under these conditions, the enrichment ratio of CALB was 0.95, and recovery rate R was 80.32%, respectively, indicating that the foam separation technology is feasible to extract lipase B.

Probing the interaction between human serum albumin and the sodium dodecyl sulphate with fluorescence correlation spectroscopy

The denaturation of human serum albumin (HSA) upon interaction with the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) was examined by measuring the diffusion time of fluorophore (RITC) tagged HSA under near single-molecule conditions using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. The diffusion time shows four distinct regions as a function of SDS concentration, which corresponds to (I) opening of the tertiary structure, (II) non-specific SDS aggregation, (III) opening of the secondary structure, and (IV) aggregation of SDS around the secondary structure. Diffusion time increases from 383 µs for the free protein to 1002 µs for the SDS bound protein, which leads to an effective increase in the hydrodynamic radius by a factor of about 2.6.

Role of carbonate electrolytes on interaction of quinolone drug with anionic surfactant at various temperatures: A conductometric study

AbstractThe role of different carbonate salts on the interaction of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with employed quinolone antibiotic drug (ciprofloxacin hydrochloride [CFH]) was explosively inspected through measuring specific conductivity (κ) of the investigated system. The drug, CFH, is an excellent antibiotic for the treatment of different bacterial infections like skin, urinary tract, and respiratory infections. The estimated critical micelle concentrations (cmc) of SDS were observed to be dwindled in the attendance of electrolytes and cmc reduction continues with the escalation of the electrolyte's concentration. The magnitudes of cmc for the SDS + CFH mixture were reduced with the elevation of temperature in K2CO3 and CaCO3 medium while increased with the rise of the temperature in the Na2CO3 medium. The magnitudes of counterion binding to micelles (β) were increased with the increase of the concentration of Na2CO3 and K2CO3 up to definite value and then reduced with the increase of successive rise of concentration of both salts at all temperatures while decreased monotonically with the rise of electrolyte concentration in CaCO3 medium. The values of standard free energy ( ) were achieved to be negative in each case suggesting spontaneous self‐assembly formation. The standard entropy change ( ) along with enthalpy change ( ) was also assessed and discussed elaborately.

The effect of SDS surfactant on surface reaeration coefficient: a laboratory scale approach

Surface reaeration coefficient (K2), which represents the transfer of oxygen at the air-water interface, is an important variable in aquatic ecosystems. K2 is influenced by several factors, including surfactants; furthermore, this coefficient is used in water-quality models, which requires its correct estimation. This study evaluated the effects of the surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) on K2 in two different experimental systems. In a cylindrical reactor with a turbine-type mechanical stirrer, 15 reaeration experiments were carried out with SDS concentrations of 0.0; 0.25; 0.5; 1.0 and 1.5 mMol L-1 and stirrer rotation velocities of 25, 50 and 100 rpm. In a circular hydraulic channel, 8 reaeration experiments were carried out, in triplicate, with SDS concentrations of 0 and 1.5 mMol L-1 and agitation levels of Reynolds 4,500, 37,500; 49,200 and 54,000. In the reactor, regardless of the rotation velocity, the surfactant reduced K2 by 20%, due to a superficial film formation at the interface that made oxygen transfer difficult, due to a phenomenon known as “barrier effect”. In the channel, an approximate K2 reduction of 15% occurred at higher levels of water agitation. In the presence of surfactants, and at low levels of agitation, phenomena that increase K2 (i.e., Marangoni effect) may coexist with those that reduce K2 (i.e., barrier effect). We concluded that the presence of SDS in aquatic environments should be considered when estimating the surface reaeration coefficient, because this surfactant can contribute to uncertain K2 estimation.
