Effect of different types of surfactants adsorption characteristics on the wettability of coking coal dust

To investigate the effect of different types of surfactants adsorption characteristics on the wettability of coking coal dust, Guoyang coking coal and three different surfactants - dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DDBAC), sodium alcohol ether sulphate (AES), coconut diethanolamide (CDEA) - were used. Firstly, the amount of surfactant adsorbed on coal dust were determined using spectrophotometry. Secondly, the contact angles of surfactants on coal tablets was determined. Subsequently, the relationship between the amount of surfactant adsorbed on the coal dust surface and the contact angle was analysed. Finally, the influence mechanism of the amount of the surfactant adsorbed on the coking coal dust surface on wettability was discussed. The experimental results suggest that the adsorption isotherm of cationic surfactant DDBAC on the coal dust surface is bilayer LS-type, while the adsorption isotherm of anionic surfactant AES and non-ionic surfactant CDEA are L-type and S-type, respectively. Additionally, when the concentration of the solution was 0.05%, the amount of AES adsorbed on the coking coal dust surface was estimated to be 64.9 mgg−1, which was 4.19-fold higher than DDBAC (i.e. to 15.5 mgg−1) and 2.2-fold higher than CDEA (i.e. to 29.5 mgg−1), nearly reaching adsorption saturation. The R2 of the amount of DDBAC, AES, and CDEA adsorbed on the coal dust surface affecting the contact angle was 0.9944, 0.99238, and 0.9923, respectively. The adsorption amount of anionic surfactant AES on the coal dust surface at 0.05% is 64.9 mgg−1, and the adsorption isotherm of surfactant on the coal dust surface is L-type, which is more conducive to enhancing the wettability of coking coal dust. Thus, the amount and adsorption isotherm form of the surfactant adsorbed on the coal dust surface are critical factors affecting the coal dust wettability, which provides a theoretical basis for the reasonable selection of surfactants to improve the coal dust suppression efficiency.

SDS-Aluminum Oxide Nanofluid for Enhanced Oil Recovery: IFT, Adsorption, and Oil Displacement Efficiency.

Surfactant flooding is one of the most promising chemical enhanced oil recovery (CEOR) methods to produce residual oil in reservoirs. Recently, nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted extensive attention because of their significant characteristics and capabilities to improve oil recovery. The aim of this study is to scrutinize the synergistic effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as an anionic surfactant and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) on the efficiency of surfactant flooding. Extensive series of interfacial tension and surfactant adsorption measurements were conducted at different concentrations of SDS and Al2O3 NPs. Furthermore, different surfactant adsorption isotherm models were fitted to the experimental data, and constants for each model were calculated. Additionally, oil displacement tests were performed at 25 °C and atmospheric pressure to indicate the suitability of SDS–Al2O3 for CEOR. Analysis of this study shows that the interfacial tension (IFT) reduction between aqueous phase and crude oil is enhanced considerably by 76%, and the adsorption density of SDS onto sandstone rock is decreased remarkably from 1.76 to 0.49 mg/g in the presence of these NPs. Although the effectiveness of NPs gradually increases with the increase of their concentration, there is an optimal value of Al2O3 NP concentration. Moreover, oil recovery was increased from 48.96 to 64.14% by adding 0.3 wt % NPs to the surfactant solution, which demonstrates the competency of SDS–Al2O3 nanofluids for CEOR.

Static Adsorption Evaluation for Anionic-Nonionic Surfactant Mixture on Sandstone in the Presence of Crude Oil at High Reservoir Temperature Condition

Summary The application of surfactants in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has revealed over the years various challenges that impose limitations on the successful implementation of surfactant flooding. Surfactant adsorption is one of the most important aspects that strongly dictates the feasibility of surfactant-based EOR. The effect of the presence of crude oil on surfactant adsorption and the influence of surfactant partitioning on the adsorption quantification are presented in this paper. Static adsorption experiments were conducted in this study for a surfactant mixture [alkyl ether carboxylate (AEC):alkylpolyglucoside (APG)] on sandstone rock samples in the absence and presence of crude oil. Partitioning experiments were carried out to evaluate the surfactant partitioning between the aqueous surfactant solution and the crude oil to determine the partitioning influence on the adsorption results in the presence of crude oil. The mixture’s adsorption and partitioning behaviors were studied at a fixed salinity of 32 k ppm and temperatures of 80 and 106°C. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used in measuring the surfactant concentration throughout adsorption and partitioning tests. Rock characterization was also performed in this study using X-ray diffraction (XRD) as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) before and after adsorption with and without crude oil being present. Static adsorption outcomes displayed the adsorption of APG, AEC, and the overall mixture with and without crude oil being present, because all are having a similar increasing trend when concentration increases. However, the adsorption values were much higher when crude oil was present as compared with the adsorption values when crude oil was absent; this is because of not considering the impact of surfactant partitioning. The adsorption values (i.e., at 0.2 wt%) for both temperatures were below 2.5 mg/g in the absence of crude oil and rose to around 3.5 mg/g in the presence of crude oil. A significant amount of what was adsorbed belongs to AEC because of its increased chain-chain interactions with APG, which was evidenced experimentally in our previous work; hence, AEC is the greatest contributor to the overall surfactant mixture’s adsorption. Also, temperature had an impact on the adsorption capacity of the AEC:APG mixture, showing that APG has a greater sensitivity to temperature in comparison to AEC. The adsorption behavior of APG was found to be the opposite of AEC, where the adsorption capacity at 106°C was lower for AEC than its adsorption capacity at 80°C and vice versa for APG. The surfactant partitioning results were used to validate the surfactant adsorption outcomes in the presence of crude oil. After eliminating the partitioning effect, the surfactant adsorption isotherms in both cases of the presence and the absence of crude oil were almost identical. The results highlighted the importance of measuring surfactant partitioning, and the impact that partitioning has on the total surfactant losses during the surfactant flooding process. XRD and XPS results indicated that the change of the rock structure after adsorption when crude oil was present was attributed to the rock dissolution phenomena. It was concluded that adsorption and partitioning take place in the water/oil/rock system simultaneously and taking that into account allows for the improved and proper designing of the surfactant flooding.

Surfactant Adsorption Isotherms: A Review.

The need to minimize surfactant adsorption on rock surfaces has been a challenge for surfactant-based, chemical-enhanced oil recovery (cEOR) techniques. Modeling of adsorption experimental data is very useful in estimating the extent of adsorption and, hence, optimizing the process. This paper presents a mini-review of surfactant adsorption isotherms, focusing on theories of adsorption and the most frequently used adsorption isotherm models. Two-step and four-region adsorption theories are well-known, with the former representing adsorption in two steps, while the latter distinguishes four regions in the adsorption isotherm. Langmuir and Freundlich are two-parameter adsorption isotherms that are widely used in cEOR studies. The Langmuir isotherm is applied to monolayer adsorption on homogeneous sites, whereas the Freundlich isotherm suites are applied to multilayer adsorption on heterogeneous sites. Some more complex adsorption isotherms are also discussed in this paper, such as Redlich–Peterson and Sips isotherms, both involve three parameters. This paper will help select and apply a suitable adsorption isotherm to experimental data.

The synergistic role of silica nanoparticle and anionic surfactant on the static and dynamic CO2 foam stability for enhanced heavy oil recovery: An experimental study

CO2 foam is a promising candidate in enhanced oil recovery and reducing anthropogenic CO2 emission through geo-sequestration due to its CO2 mobility control ability. However, instability of CO2 foam stabilized solely by surfactant strongly retards its application. Here, two types of silica nanoparticles (NPs) with varied hydrophobicity are used with sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) to increase CO2 foam stability. Through foamability and foam stability experiments, together with complementary experiments such as measurements of CO2-water interfacial tensions, particle zeta potential, and adsorption isotherm of surfactant, the stabilization mechanisms of AOT-NPs aqueous dispersions on the CO2 foam films are revealed. Oil recovery experiments are performed in an oil-wet micromodel where high permeability channels are included to mimic wormholes in unconsolidated sandstone reservoirs during sand production. Results show that the nanoparticle surface hydrophobicity strongly influences the interactions between particles and AOT. Partially hydrophobic NPs (NPB) are much more efficient in generating and stabilizing CO2 foam than hydrophilic NPs (NPA) when mixed with AOT in a proportion of 1: 0.16 (wt%/wt%). AOT-NPB dispersions improve the recovery in two aspects: First, the synergistic interactions between AOT and NPB leads to the adsorption of AOT on particle surfaces, thus enhancing mechanical strength of bubbles. High quality foam encompasses a fine foam texture and provides higher resistance to the gas flow, leading to a more uniform sweep. Second, AOT-NPB dispersions reduces oil/water IFT, promotes emulsification forming oil in water (O/W) emulsions, and alters glass surface wettability, leading to substantial incremental oil recovery.

Capturing Structural Transitions in Surfactant Adsorption Isotherms at Solid/Solution Interfaces

Although adsorption isotherms of surfactants are critical in determining the relationship between interfacial properties and structures of surfactants, providing quantitative predictions of the isotherms remains challenging. This is especially true for adsorption at hard interfaces such as on two-dimensional (2D) layered materials or on nanoparticles where simulation techniques developed for fluid-fluid interfaces that dynamically change surface properties by adjusting unit cells do not apply. In this work, we predict nonideal adsorption at a solid-solution interface with a molecular thermodynamic theory (MTT) model that utilizes molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for the determination of free-energy parameters in the MTT. Furthermore, the MD/MTT model provides atomistic insights into the nonideal behavior of surfactants by capturing structural phases of the surfactants at the interface. Our approach captures structural transitions from the ideal state at low concentrations and then to the critical surface aggregation concentration (CSAC) and finally through the critical micelle concentration (CMC). We validate our model against the original MTT model by comparing predicted adsorption isotherms of a simplified surfactant system from both approaches. We further substantiate the applicability of our model in complex systems by providing adsorption isotherms in an aqueous sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-graphene system, in good agreement with the experimental observations of the CSAC for the same system.

Exploring the Free Energy Landscape To Predict the Surfactant Adsorption Isotherm at the Nanoparticle-Water Interface.

The long-lasting stability of nanoparticle (NP) suspensions in aqueous solution is one of the main challenges in colloidal science. The addition of surfactants is generally adopted to increase the free energy barrier between NPs and hence to ensure a more stable condition avoiding the NP sedimentation. However, a tailored prediction of surfactant concentration enabling a good dispersion of NPs is still an ambitious objective. Here, we demonstrate the efficiency of coupling steered molecular dynamics (SMD) with the Langmuir theory of adsorption in the low surfactant concentration regime, to predict the adsorption isotherm of sodium-dodecyl-sulfate (SDS) on bare α-alumina NPs suspended in aqueous solution. The resulting adsorption free energy landscapes (FELs) are also investigated by tuning the percentage of SDS molecules coating the target bare NP. Our findings shed light on the competing role of enthalpic and entropic interaction contributions. On one hand, the adsorption is highly promoted by the tail–NP and tail–tail nonbonded interaction adhesion; on the other hand, our results unveil the entropic nature of water and surfactant steric effects occurring at the NP surface and preventing the adsorption. Finally, a thorough analysis on the steering works emphasizes the role of the NP curvature in the FEL of adsorption. In particular, we show that, moving from a solid infinite flat surface to a nanoscale particle, a deviation from a Markovian dynamics of adsorption occurs in close proximity to a curved solid–liquid interface. Here, both the NP curvature effect and nanoscale morphology promote a modification of the thermodynamics state of adsorption with a consequent splitting of the free energy profiles and the identification of specific sites of adsorption. The modeling framework suggested in this Article provides physical insights in the surfactant adsorption onto spherical NPs and suggests some guidelines to rationally design stable NP suspensions in aqueous solutions.

Surface modification of activated carbon by surfactants mixtures

Adsorption of surfactants is widely used for surface modification of different materials. Using of the mixtures of the surfactants in many cases is more attractive compared with single surfactants, however composition of mixed adsorption layers at solid surface was not sufficiently studied yet. In this work, the mutual effect of anionic and nonionic surfactants on the composition of the mixed adsorption layer on the surface of activated carbon (AC) was studied. Sodium hexadecyl sulphate (SHS) and oxyethylated octylphenol Triton X100 (TX-100) were used as anionic and nonionic surfactants, respectively. Mixed SHS/TX-100 systems have been studied over a concentration range of 0.1-8.0 mmol/L and the molar fractions of SHS in the mixtures were within 0.2-0.8. It was shown that the adsorption isotherms of SHS or TX-100 surfactants at AC could be describe by the Langmuir equation. For surfactants mixtures at low equilibrium concentrations, it was found that adsorption of SHS increases when TX-100 is present in the solution. This might be explained by the decreasing of electrostatic interactions between the head groups of SHS molecules in the mixed adsorption layers due to incorporation of the molecules of the nonionic surfactant. At higher total surfactant concentrations, SDS adsorbed at AC surface is replaced by TX-100 molecules and as result the nonionic surfactants is preferentially adsorbed on AC.

Effects of Temperature and Shear on the Adsorption of Surfactants on Carbon Nanotubes

Carbon nanotube suspensions in water can be stabilized with the use of surfactants. However, when a suspension is exposed to harsh conditions, the surfactants might detach from the carbon nanotube (CNT) surface leading to CNT agglomeration and precipitation. In order to explore temperature effects on the suspension, the surfactant adsorption isotherms of an ionic surfactant (alkylpropoxy sulfate, alfoterra 123-8s) and a nonionic surfactant (secondary alcohol ethoxylate, tergitol 15-s-40) on a CNT are obtained at various temperatures using dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. The effects of shear stresses, such as those experienced by the CNT–surfactant suspension when it passes through pumps, are also explored by applying different levels of constant shear on the suspension. It is seen that there is good agreement between the DPD results and the Langmuir model for the adsorption of both alfoterra and tergitol on CNTs. Heat of adsorption of surfactants and its role on nanoparticle stabilization

In this work, the binding between sodium oleate (SO), sodium laurate (SL), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and sodium dodecylphosphonate (SDP) and iron oxide nanoparticles was systematically investigated using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Comparing the heat exchanged during the isothermal titration with the corresponding surfactant adsorption isotherm, in the cases of SO and SDP, a strong binding takes place at low surfactant concentrations. The binding enthalpy at this low surfactant concentrations depends on the type of surfactant anionic head group. For C12 surfactants, the phosphonate group produced the strongest endothermic binding, followed by the exothermic binding with the carboxylate group, followed by weak exothermic interaction with the sulfate group. For carboxylate surfactants, longer surfactant tails result in larger exothermic binding. Surfactants that exhibited large binding enthalpies also produced more stable suspensions. The Langmuir (L), Freundlich (F), and Langmuir–Freundlich (L–F) adsorption models were used to interpret the adsorption isotherms during the titration with sodium oleate. The L–F adsorption isotherm model was selected to calculate the heat of the formation of the SO monolayer and bilayer on the iron oxide nanoparticles. The L–F model reflects the finite or limited adsorption of the Langmuir model, but accounts for non-homogeneous adsorption of the Freundlich model that help account for surfactant self-assembly before and after adsorption. Coupling the adsorption model with the titration data is possible to calculate the real heat of adsorption of the surfactants on the metal oxide.

Effect of Pluronics and surfactant adsorption onto dolomite suspension zeta potential and stability

AbstractTwo kinds of Pluronics (PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymers) were used in these studies. They have mixed with anionic surfactant (sodium oleate). The adsorption isotherms of surfactant and copolymer-surfactant mixture onto dolomite have been determined. The adsorbed amount of the Pluronics increases with increasing concentration and reaches plateau. An increase of adsorbed amounts of anionic surfactant onto the mineral surfaces (dolomite) has been observed at the presence of Pluronic copolymers. The adsorption effect of triblock copolymers has been investigated on the zeta potential of dolomite at the water suspension. The interaction of anionic surfactant with copolymers causes a decrease of zeta potential to small amount due to the deformation of double electrical layer. The adsorbed non-ionic Pluronic layer partially screens the surface charge of mineral particles, and thus, reduces the zeta potential. On the other hand, the adsorption of anionic surfactant and copolymer caused a decrease of negative value of zeta potential both investigated minerals. The stability of dolomite suspension depends on the both copolymer and sodium oleate concentrations.

Role of Chain Length and Type on the Adsorption Behavior of Cationic Surfactants and the Silica Floatability

In this study, we investigated the adsorption isotherms of cationic surfactants (i.e., distearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC), behenyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (BTAC), and stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (STAC)) onto silica surface and the corresponding silica floatability according to chain type and length of cationic surfactants. The results for the adsorption isotherms of cationic surfactants showed that the adsorptive amounts increased with increasing surfactant concentration, but differences in the position of the adsorption isotherms existed between DDAC, BTAC, and STAC. Specifically, in the high range of initial surfactant concentrations (i.e., 10 ¹5 ­10 ¹3 M), the adsorptive amounts increased with increasing hydrocarbon chain length. In addition, in the presence of DDAC, the adsorptive amounts were much greater than those in the presence of BTAC and STAC. The results were attributed to the fact that the increase in the hydrocarbon chain group of surfactants decreased the Gibbs free energy of the system, resulting in a shift of hemimicelle concentration toward lower concentration. Meanwhile, in the low range of initial surfactant concentrations (i.e., 5 © 10¹7­5 © 10¹6M), the adsorptive amounts were comparable regardless of surfactant type, which was due to the fact that the interaction between the cationic surfactants and the silica surface was mainly governed by electrostatic attractive force. The results from silica flotation and hydrophobicity tests showed that silica floatability increased with increasing hydrocarbon chain group of surfactants (i.e., floatability was in the order of DDAC > BTAC > STAC) under the conditions where the adsorptive amounts of the surfactants were comparable and that floatability results were consistent with those for the hydrophobicity of silica surface. Overall, the findings from the present study suggested that the hydrocarbon chain length and type of cationic surfactants play a significant role in both the adsorption behavior of surfactants and the silica floatability. Adsorption Isotherms and Structure of Cationic Surfactants Adsorbed on Mineral Oxide Surfaces Prepared by Atomic Layer Deposition

The adsorption isotherms and aggregate structures of adsorbed surfactants on smooth thin-film surfaces of mineral oxides have been studied by optical reflectometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Films of the mineral oxides of titania, alumina, hafnia, and zirconia were produced by atomic layer deposition (ALD) with low roughness. We find that the surface strongly influences the admicelle organization on the surface. At high concentrations (2 × cmc) of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), the surfactant aggregates on a titania surface exhibit a flattened admicelle structure with an average repeat distance of 8.0 ± 1.0 nm whereas aggregates on alumina substrates exhibit a larger admicelle with an average separation distance of 10.5 ± 1.0 nm. A wormlike admicelle structure with an average separation distance of 7.0 ± 1.0 nm can be observed on zirconia substrates whereas a bilayered aggregate structure on hafnia substrates was observed. The change in the surface aggregate structure can be related to an increase in the critical packing parameter through a reduction in the effective headgroup area of the surfactant. The templating strength of the surfaces are found to be hafnia > alumina > zirconia > titania. Weakly templating surfaces are expected to have superior biocompatibility.

Adsorption of Gemini surfactants onto clathrate hydrates

This work addresses the adsorption of two Gemini surfactants at the cyclopentane (CP) hydrate–water interface. The Gemini surfactants investigated here are Dowfax C6L and Dowfax 2A1 that have two anionic head groups and one hydrophobic tail group. The adsorption of these surfactants was quantified using adsorption isotherms and the adsorption isotherms were determined using liquid–liquid titrations. Even if the Gemini surfactant adsorption isotherms show multi-layer adsorption, they possess the first Langmuir layer with the second adsorption layer only evident in the 2A1 adsorption isotherm. Zeta potentials of CP hydrate particles in the surfactant solution of various concentrations of Dowfax C6L and Dowfax 2A1 were measured to further explain their adsorption behavior at the CP hydrate–water interface. Zeta potentials of alumina particles as a model particle system in different concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), Dowfax C6L and Dowfax 2A1 were also measured to confirm the configuration of all the surfactants at the interface. The determination of the isotherms and zeta-potentials provides an understanding framework for the adsorption behavior of the two Gemini surfactants at the hydrate–water interface.

Laboratory Study on the Static Absorption of Cationic Gemini Surfactant CGS on Quartz Sand

Adsorption isotherms of new type cationic Gemini surfactant named CGS on quartz sand has been got by using solution concentration difference method. The effect of different factors on adsorption, such as temperature, pH value and salinity, are studied too. The adsorption isotherm of CGS on quartz sand accorded with Langmuir shape. The adsorption quantity increased with the increasing of surfactant concentration at an adagio rate, then the adsorption quantity increased fast, and it reached adsorption saturation when mass concentration was 150 mg/L, and saturated absorption was 6.3 mg/g. The adsorption quantity of CGS increased with the increasing of salt concentration. When heighten temperature and pH value, the adsorption quantity of CGS decreased.

Application of mass spectrometry for study of the adsorption of multicomponent surfactant mixtures at the solid/solution interface

The selective adsorption of the components of a polydisperse gemini surfactant blend (alkylbenzenesulfonate-Jeffamine salt, ABSJ) in aqueous solution onto Berea sandstone, a reference material in enhanced oil recovery (EOR), was investigated. The individual adsorption isotherms of the four, benzene-ring containing ABSJ components with different alkyl chain lengths (ranging from decyl to tridecyl of the alkyl chain length) were simultaneously determined by using a four-channel electrospay ionization mass spectrometer (ESI-MS) for concentration analysis. This analytical device provided selective information (based on the differences in the mass to charge ratio) on the adsorption of each component in the mixed surfactant system. The overall isotherm obtained from the superposition of the individual isotherms determined by ESI-MS agreed well with the isotherm determined by UV spectrometry; the UV equipment is benzene-ring sensitive, irrespective of the alkyl chain length. The S-shaped isotherms reached a plateau at the critical micelle concentration. Longer-chain surfactants adsorbed preferentially over the short chain homologs, independently of solution concentration. This analytical device provided the net adsorption isotherm. Most analytical methods are not component selective, and thus they are not able to measure the individual isotherms in multicomponent solutions. Here, we report on a novel method which describes the selective determination of the individual adsorption isotherms of surfactants in a multicomponent mixture. The theoretical background of the method is described in detail.

Calculation of contact angle on charged surface

There is good correlation of contact angle measurements and contact angles calculated from surfactant adsorption density data for an electrically neutral surface, as reported in a previous paper for the system hematite–aqueous solution–ketone, with surfactant hexadecyl sulfonic acid. The same method is not sufficient when the hematite surface is electrically charged. Data was collected to develop the appropriate form of an electrostatic term for the analysis. Acid–base titration was used to evaluate surface electrical properties versus pH for the hematite used in the study. Surfactant adsorption isotherms were measured at pH of 4.5, 5.5, 6, and 7 to use in developing an equation for effect of surface potential on contact angle. After adding a term for the contribution of the electric field, the contact angles calculated from adsorption data follow the measured contact angles well.

The Influence of Stirring upon the Adsorption of a Cationic Surfactant onto Activated Carbon Particles

The adsorption rate of the cationic surfactant cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) onto particles of activated carbon has been determined from measurements of the changes in the conductivity of the supernatant solution. This technique exhibited a high sampling frequency which enabled detailed analysis of the adsorption kinetics. It was demonstrated that the adsorption rate was generally positively correlated with the stirring rate, although the effect was small. The adsorption rate could be modelled by 1.3-order kinetic equations; first-order kinetic treatment only approximately described the process, but gave a better description than second-order kinetics. The hypothesis that adsorption was controlled by the intra-particle diffusion mechanism was not supported by the data. In addition, the technique enabled the construction of adsorption isotherms of ionic surfactants onto particles. In this case, the adsorption equilibrium was described by a Langmuir isotherm.

Reduction of water wettability of nanofibrillated cellulose by adsorption of cationic surfactants

Adsorption isotherms of single and double chain cationic surfactants with different chain length (cetyltrimethyl-, didodecyl- and dihexadecyl ammonium bromide) onto cellulose nanofibrils were determined. Nanofibrillated cellulose, also known as microfibrillated cellulose (MFC), with varying contents of carboxyl groups (different surface charge) was prepared by TEMPO-mediated oxidation followed by mechanical fibrillation. The fibril charge was characterized by potentiometric and conductometric titration. Surfactant adsorption was verified by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Wetting and adhesion of water onto fibril films was determined by contact angle measurements. Small aggregates (admicelles) of surfactant were shown to form on the nanofibril surfaces, well below critical micelle concentrations. The results demonstrate the possibility of using cationic surfactants to systematically control the degree of water wettability of cellulose nanofibrils.

Aqueous Foams Stabilized by in Situ Surface Activation of CaCO3 Nanoparticles via Adsorption of Anionic Surfactant

The in situ surface activation of unmodified CaCO(3) nanoparticles by interaction with surfactant in aqueous media has been studied, and the impact of this on the foamability and foam stability of aqueous dispersions was assessed. Using complementary experiments including measurement of particle zeta potentials, adsorption isotherms of surfactant, air-water surface tensions, and relevant contact angles, the mechanism of this activation was revealed. The results show that the non-surface-active CaCO(3) nanoparticles cannot be surface activated by interaction with cationic or nonionic surfactants but can be surface activated by interaction with anionic surfactants such as SDS and AOT, leading to a synergistic effect in both foamability and foam stability. The electrostatic interaction between the positive charges on particle surfaces and the negative charges of anionic surfactant headgroups results in monolayer adsorption of the surfactant at the particle-water interface and transforms the particles from hydrophilic to partially hydrophobic such that particles become surface active and stabilize bubbles. SDS is a more efficient surfactant for this surface activation than AOT. Possible reasons for this difference are suggested.
