Effects of chemical etching on surface structure and tribological behavior of silicate substrates

Abstract This study investigated the effect of chemical etching on the surface structure and tribological behavior of silicate substrates. Silicate surfaces were etched using a mixture of nitric acid (HNO3) and ammonium bifluoride (NH4HF2) for durations ranging from 1 to 60 min. The etched surfaces were characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, surface profilometry, water contact angle measurements, and UV–vis spectroscopy to evaluate the changes in surface morphology, roughness, wettability, and optical properties. Tribological performance was assessed using reciprocating ball-on-plate friction tests. The results showed that increasing the etching time resulted in the formation of microscale surface features, increased surface roughness, enhanced hydrophilicity, and reduced optical transmittance. The average friction coefficient decreased with an increase in the etching time up to 30 min, beyond which a slight increase was observed. The 1-minute etched specimen exhibited the best wear resistance with the narrowest wear track and the least material removal. The improved tribological performance was attributed to the formation of a stable transfer film, reduced real contact area, and entrapment of wear debris. This study highlights the potential of chemical etching as a technique to tailor the surface structure and tribological properties of silicate materials for various applications.

Fabrication and in vitro biocompatibility of hierarchical cellulose acetate/polyvinylpyrrolidone@titania nanowire hollow microfibers

In this study, hierarchical cellulose acetate/polyvinylpyrrolidone hollow microfibers (CA/PVP HMFs) were first prepared via a dip coating method using a steel wire as tubular template and then supported a sol-gel deposition of titania nanoparticles (NPs) to derive CA/PVP@titania NP HMFs. After hydrothermally treated in NaOH solution, CA/PVP@titania NP HMFs were transformed to CA/PVP@titania nanowire (NW) HMFs. SEM observation showed that CA/PVP@titania NW HMFs had a hollow structure with diameters of 450–600 μm and exhibited a hierarchical and nanofibrous structure. Their surfaces were constructed by numerous titania NWs with diameters of 10–30 nm and lengths of 1–5 μm. The incorporation of PVP not only caused a significant change in surface wettability from hydrophobic CA HMFs to hydrophilic CA/PVP HMFs, but also promoted the sol-gel deposition of titania NPs on CA/PVP HMFs. CA/PVP@titania NW HMFs exhibited the highest hydrophilicity with water contact angle of 32° and the largest specific surface area of 86.1 m2/g. In vitro biocompatible evaluation indicated that CA/PVP@titania NW HMFs exhibited much higher cell adhesion and proliferation than CA/PVP@titania NP HMFs and CA/PVP HMFs within 7 days due to the presence of nanofibrous surface architecture. Thus, the present CA/PVP titania NW HMFs have potential as biocompatible cell supporting matrices.

Superhydrophilic and Underwater Superaerophobic Dual-Function Peony-Shaped Selenide Micro-nano Array Self-Supported Electrodes for High-Efficiency Overall Water Splitting Driven by Renewable Energy.

With the intensification of global environmental pollution and resource scarcity, hydrogen has garnered significant attention as an ideal alternative to fossil fuels due to its high energy density and nonpolluting nature. Consequently, the urgent development of electrocatalytic water-splitting electrodes for hydrogen production is imperative. In this study, a superwetting selenide catalytic electrode with a peony-flower-shaped micronano array (MoS2/Co0.8Fe0.2Se2/NixSey/nickel foam (NF)) was synthesized on NF via a two-step hydrothermal method. The optimal catalytic activity of cobalt-iron selenide was achieved by adjusting the Co/Fe ratio. The intrinsic catalytic activity of the electrodes was enhanced by incorporating transition metal selenides, which then served as a precursor for the subsequent loading of MoS2 nanoflowers on the surface to fully expose the active sites. Furthermore, the superwetting properties of the electrode accelerated electrolyte penetration and electron/mass transfer, while also facilitating bubble detachment from the electrode surface, thereby preventing "bubble shielding effect". This resulted in superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, as well as overall water splitting capabilities. In a 1.0 M KOH solution, the electrode required only 166 and 195 mV overpotential to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for OER and HER, respectively. When functioning as a bifunctional catalytic electrode, only 1.60 V of voltage was necessary to drive the electrolyzer to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Moreover, laboratory simulations of wind and solar energy-driven water splitting validated the feasibility of establishing a sustainable energy-to-hydrogen production chain. This work provides new insights into the preparation of low-overpotential, high-catalytic-activity superhydrophilic and underwater superaerophobic catalytic electrodes by rationally adjusting elemental ratios and exploring changes in electrode surface wettability.

Photo-induced time-dependent controllable wettability of dual-responsive multi-functional electrospun MXene/polymer fibers

Switchable wettability potential in smart fibers is of paramount importance in various applications. Light-induced controllable changes in surface wettability have a significant role in this area. Herein, smart waterborne homopolymer, functional copolymer with different polarity and flexibility, and multi-functional terpolymer particles containing a time-dependent dual-responsive acrylated spiropyran, as a polymerizable monomer, were successfully synthesized through eco-friendly single-step emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. Presence of 10 wt% of butyl acrylate and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate relative to methylmethacrylate as functional comonomers decreased the Tg of the samples almost 20 ℃ and increased their polarity. The optical properties of the particles were investigated, and the UV–vis and fluorescence spectroscopy results showed that not only the polarity and flexibility of the polymer chains individually have a positive effect on improving the optical properties, but also the simultaneous presence of both functional groups has a synergistic effect. The smart polymer particles with flexibility and polarity features exhibited higher absorption and emission compared to other samples. Inspired by these findings, multi-functional smart polymer fibers were prepared using the electrospinning method. The smart multi-functional electrospun fibers containing few-layer Ti3C2 MXenes were synthesized to improve the fibers’ properties and change the surface wettability due to the hydrophilic functional groups of MXene. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy images displayed the successful preparation of few-layer MXenes. Smooth and bead-free fibers with bright red fluorescence emission under UV irradiation were shown using fluorescence microscopy. The study on the surface wettability of fibers revealed that UV and visible light irradiation induced reversible time-dependent changes in the wettability of the smart multi-functional MXene/polymer electrospun fibers from hydrophobic to hydrophilic, reaching a water contact angle of 10° from an initial water contact angle of 100° under UV light and also changing to superhydrophilic state with passing time. Upon visible light exposure, the fibers returned to their original state. Furthermore, the fibers demonstrated a high stability over five alternating cycles of UV and visible light irradiation. This study shows that the fabrication of time-dependent smart fibers, utilizing the flexibility and polarity in the presence of MXenes, significantly improves and controls surface wettability changes. The outstanding dynamically photo-switchable wettability of these fibers may offer exciting opportunities in various applications, especially in the separation of oil from water contaminants.

Influence of TiO2-MWCNTs nanohybrid material on the corrosion resistance of epoxy low-zinc coatings

Aiming to improve the corrosion resistance of epoxy low-zinc coatings in marine environments, TiO2-MWCNTs nano-hybridized materials were prepared by sol-gel method in this study, and different contents of reinforcing phases were implanted as to improve the anticorrosive properties of epoxy low-zinc coatings. Characterization of the microscopic morphology, physical phase composition and chemical structure of the TiO2-MWCNTs materials demonstrated that the TiO2 hybridization was successful and the loading of TiO2 improved the dispersion of MWCNTs. To investigate the effect of the additive reinforcing phase on the mechanical and corrosion resistance of the coatings by characterizing the coating microscopic morphology, surface wettability, substrate adhesion, and impedance changes at different immersion times. The above results demonstrated that the epoxy composite coating had lower surface energy and 16% larger surface contact angle compared with the pure epoxy low-zinc coating; the 0.4wt.% TiO2-MWCNTs/epoxy composite coating had the highest adhesion of 6.52MPa. The electrochemical test results indicated that the TiO2-MWCNTs/epoxy low-zinc composite coating had the largest self-corrosion potential, the smallest self-corrosion current density of 4.538 μA/cm2, and the largest impedance of 242.3 KΩ/cm2. The addition of TiO2-MWCNTs reinforcing phase significantly extended the barrier protection time of the epoxy low zinc coating and maintained good corrosion resistance throughout the immersion cycle.

Time-dependent 532 nm laser irradiation for tuning in optical, structural, and surface wettability changes of Te/In2Se3 thin films for optoelectronic applications

Laser irradiation for tuning the optoelectronic parameters of semiconducting thin films is widely applicable and has many benefits. The aim of the study is 532 nm laser irradiation of Te/In2Se3 film at different laser exposure time scales. The bilayer structure and its conversion to a single layer with laser annealing were confirmed from cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy. At the same time, the element's appearance was found in the EDX analysis. FESEM probed the corresponding surface structure change. XRD and Raman's spectroscopy analyzed the increase in crystallinity with laser irradiation by mixing Te into the In2Se3 layer and related microstructural changes. The shift in Raman peak with lasing time signifies the effect of time of exposure. There is a systematic decrement in the transmittance of the films. Also, the absorption edge shift resulted in the decrement in bandgap with laser irradiation. The static refractive index and optical density increased as well. The skin depth was decreased with a minimal change in the optical electronegativity. The nonlinear refractive index increased from 1.638 × 10–9 esu to 1.773 × 10–9 esu by 60 min laser irradiation. Similarly, there was an increment in 3rd-order nonlinear susceptibility from 1.58 × 10–10 esu to 1.73 × 10–10 esu. The surface wettability test confirmed the hydrophilic nature of the samples with decreasing hydrophilicity by laser irradiation. The tuning in different properties of the Te/In2Se3 film by laser irradiation is suitable for various optoelectronic applications.

Surface Characteristics and Artificial Weathering Resistance of Oil-Based Coatings on the Chemically and Thermally Modified Short-Rotation Teak Wood.

Improving the durability of short-rotation wood can be achieved through chemical and thermal modification. Chemical and thermal modification can have an impact on the physicochemical properties of wood, which can affect wood's surface characteristics and its resistance to weathering. The purpose of this study was to investigate the surface characteristics and artificial weathering resistance of chemically and thermally modified short-rotation teak wood coated with linseed oil (LO)-, tung oil (TO)-, and commercial oil-based coatings consisting of a mixture of linseed oil and tung oil (LT) and commercial oil-based polyurethane resin (LB) coatings. The short-rotation teak woods were prepared in untreated and treated with furfuryl alcohol (FA), thermal treatment (HT) at 150 and 220 °C, and combination of glycerol-maleic anhydride (GMA) impregnation with thermal treatment at 150 and 220 °C. The surface characteristics measured were surface free energy, wettability, Persoz hardness, bonding quality, and color changes before and after artificial weathering exposure. The results showed that chemical and thermal modifications treatment tended to reduce total surface free energy (SFE), hardness, wettability, and bonding quality. FA and GMA at 220 °C treatments provided homogenization effect on surface characteristics, especially in total SFE and wettability. The total SFE of untreated wood ranged from 45.00 to 51.13 mN/m, and treated wood ranged from 40.58 to 50.79 mN/m. The wettability of oil-based coating according to K-value ranged from 0.20 to 0.54. TO presented better photostability than LO. Short-rotation teak wood coated with oil-based commercial coatings presented better weathering resistance compared to pure natural drying oil. Commercial oil-based coatings provided better weathering protection for the chemically and thermally modified teak wood. The application of oil-based coatings on chemically and thermally modified short-rotation teak is being considered for the development of a better wood-protection system.

Fabrication of Biomimetic Hydrophobic Surfaces Using Phyto‐Polymers and their Bimetallic Au@Ag Nanoparticles

AbstractGreen phyto technology is a novel version, and the intersection of nanotechnology with nanobiotechnology gains much attention among global researchers owing to the vast range of industrial, environmental and medical applications. To synthesize bimetallic nano particles of Au@Ag, corresponding metal precursors were added to aqueous fruit latex extract of Artocarpus heterophyllus (AHL) & bark latex extract of Mimusops elengi (MEM) and exposed to sunlight. Hydrophobic surfaces are often designed to mimic low surface energy materials and hierarchical micro/nanostructures. In this study, hydrophobic surfaces on glass substrates were fabricated using a simple immersion process that was rapid, facile, and environmental friendly. Latex extracts, Au@Ag nanoparticles, stearic acid and methyltrichlorosilane were used in the coatings. The shape, heterogeneity, roughness and surface functionality of modified hydrophobic surfaces were investigated by FESEM, 3D profilometer and FT‐IR studies. The contact angle (CA) of modified surfaces was measured by Goniometer. The anti‐corrosive property of modified hydrophobic surfaces was tested. Recent micro/nanotechnological advancements have inspired artificial changes of surface wettability by bio‐mimic surfaces with efficient nanoparticles.

Effects of surface wettability and density change during solidification of paraffin phase change materials

Phase change materials (PCMs) are widely used for thermal energy storage and other applications. During the solidification of a PCM, a volume change occurs due to thermal expansion and structural change of the molecules. A concave shape may be created during the solidification shrinkage. This paper investigates the shrinkage profile formed during the solidification of paraffin wax and its relationship with the surface wettability (contact angle), considering the effect of density changes. The contact angle of a paraffin droplet on a surface indicates the extent of adhesion between the solid surface and paraffin. The experimental study examines a mixture of wax with nanoparticles, wax with surfactants, different coatings on the container surface, and different solidification temperatures. Enhanced adhesion and increased shrinkage height are observed due to the non-polar interaction between coated surfaces and paraffin, facilitated by induced dipole-induced dipole forces. The addition of 3% octadecylamine enhances adhesion between paraffin and the container, as driven by dipole–dipole forces between the hydroxyl group on epoxy resin-container surfaces and the hydrophilic amine group of octadecylamine. The shrinkage height increases with a decrease in the contact angle of paraffin on the surface. The shrinkage profile also changes with the solidification temperature. The highest shrinkage profile is achieved for the highest solidification temperature.

Experimental investigation of pool boiling performance on a coated copper surface using a two-step non-thermal plasma process

In this study, a stable hydrophilic thin layer resembling SiOx is formed on the copper surface by combining plasma polymerization using hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) and Ar plasma activation. The effect of coating on the Heat Transfer Coefficient (HTC) and Critical Heat Flux (CHF) at two different subcooling temperatures is investigated through pool boiling experiments. It is found that the HTC and CHF of the modified surface improved by 42 % and 97 %, respectively. The chemical composition of the coating, as well as changes in surface roughness, wettability, and porosity, are studied using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and contact angle measurement. The boiling/cooling experiments for the plasma-coated surface show good stability, demonstrating that the surface characteristics remain stable even after three boiling/cooling cycles.

Multi-functional PDMS/MMT Coating on magnesium substrates: Hydrophobicity, durability, and EMI shielding

In this work, a highly efficient surface coating strategy using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modified low-cost montmorillonite (MMT) was revealed, to enhance the surface performance and durability of magnesium substrates. Contact angle, self-cleaning, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and ultrabroadband electromagnetic absorption and EMI shielding evaluations were comprehensively studied. The obtained PDMS/MMT/Mg substrate consistently exhibited an obvious increased contact angle from 76.1 to 141.9 °, signifying strong hydrophobicity and self-cleaning properties compared to the untreated R-Mg substrate. No significant surface wettability changes were detected even after 50 times of tape peeling or 3.0 wt% NaCl solution immersion for 60 h, indicating high durability of the protective PDMS/MMT coatings. Moreover, the PDMS/MMT/Mg substrates can be applied as microwave-absorbing materials, particularly in high-frequency applications, and as excellent EMI shielding with an SE value above 40 dB. This study highlights the effectiveness of the relatively inexpensive PDMS/MMT coating in enhancing the performance of magnesium substrates, providing a new approach to balance cost control and meet performance requirements in industrial or large-scale production.

Impact of Molecular Weight on Anti-Bioadhesion Efficiency of PDMS-Based Coatings

Silicone elastomer coatings have shown successful fouling release ability in recent years. To further enhance the design of silicone coatings, it is necessary to fully understand the mechanisms that contribute to their performance. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the molecular weight of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and antibioadhesion efficiency. PDMS-based coatings were prepared via a condensation reaction, with a controlled molecular weight ranging from 0.8 to 10 kg·mol−1. To evaluate changes in surface wettability and morphology, contact angle experiments and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were performed. Finally, the antibioadhesion and self-cleaning performance of PDMS coatings was carried out during in situ immersion in Lorient harbor for 12 months. Despite small variations in surface properties depending on the molecular weight, strong differences in the antibioadhesion performance were observed. According to the results, the best antibioadhesion efficiency was obtained for coatings with an Mn between 2 and 4 kg·mol−1 after 12 months. This paper provides for the first time the impact of the molecular weight of PDMS on antibioadhesion efficiency in a real marine environment.

An experimental study of the effects of bacteria on asphaltene adsorption and wettability alteration of dolomite and quartz

The adsorption of asphaltene on the rock surface and the changes in its wettability are very relevant issues in flow assurance and oil recovery studies, and for carbonate reservoirs, they are even more important. During microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) processes, wettability alteration is considered a crucial mechanism leading to improved oil recovery. Therefore, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of surface wettability changes by bacteria and biosurfactants and find new and reliable methods to prevent asphaltene adsorption. Hence, the main aim of this research was to investigate the effect of a mixture of thiobacillus thiooxidans and thiobacillus ferooxidans microorganisms with an optimum effective temperature of around 30 °C (referred to as mesophilic bacteria), as well as a mixture of two moderate thermophiles Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans for operating temperatures around 50 °C (referred to as moderately thermophilic bacteria) on the adsorption of asphaltene samples isolated from two different crude oils onto main reservoir minerals (i.e., quartz and dolomite). The results indicated that after two weeks of mineral aging in moderate thermophilic bacteria, the adsorption of asphaltene on both minerals increased between 180 and 290%. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis for quartz and dolomite samples demonstrated that after aging in bacterial solution, bonds related to the adsorption of bacterial cells and biosurfactant production appear, which are the main factors of change in wettability. Alteration in wettability towards hydrophilicity expands hydrogen bonds on the surface, thus improving asphaltene adsorption due to polar interaction. Asphaltene 1 changed the contact angle of dolomite from 53.85° to 90.51° and asphaltene 2 from 53.85° to 100.41°. However, both strains of bacteria caused a strong water-wetting effect on the dolomite rock samples. The influence of moderate thermophilic bacteria on surface wettability is more significant than that of mesophilic bacteria, which may be caused by the high protein content of these bacteria, which expands hydrogen bonding with the surface. Adsorption of asphaltenes on dolomite rocks previously aged with bacteria showed that the wetted rock samples retained their water-wet state. This study highlights the dual impact of the used microorganisms. On one hand, they significantly reduce contact angles and shift wettability towards a strongly water-wet condition, a crucial positive factor for MEOR. On the other hand, these microorganisms can elevate the adsorption of asphaltenes on reservoir rock minerals, posing a potential challenge in the form of formation damage, particularly in low-permeability reservoirs.

Fabrication of Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) Hydrophilic Surfaces Using Combined Offset-Tool-Servo Flycutting and Hot Embossing Methods.

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a material with good surface wettability and has unique and widespread applications in industrial fields. However, fabricating this material in an environmentally friendly way while maintaining its mechanical robustness remains a challenging task. One effective way is through the rational design of microstructure surfaces. The current study fabricated a pyramid microstructure array on a mold surface using offset-tool-servo flycutting, which was then combined with hot embossing to replicate an inverted pyramid microstructure array on a PMMA surface. Firstly, a toolpath compensation algorithm was developed to linearize the arc toolpath and reduce the cost of ultra-precision lathe. Then, the algorithm was further developed to achieve automatic linear toolpath intersection, aiming to ensure the machining accuracy and improve machining efficiency. An experiment testing the linear toolpath intersecting at 90° was conducted, fabricating a pyramid microstructure array with nanoscale roughness on the mold surface. This surface was then employed for replicating an inverted pyramid microstructure array on the PMMA surface using hot embossing. Furthermore, the accuracy of replication was evaluated, and the experimental results demonstrated excellent replication fidelity, exceeding 98%. The microstructural surface of the PMMA exhibited a change in surface wettability. The wettability test showed a water-droplet contact angle reduction from 84.8° ± 0.1° to 56.2° ± 0.1°, demonstrating a good hydrophilic effect. This study introduces a novel, environmentally friendly and high-precision method to fabricate a functional PMMA surface with an inverted pyramid microstructure array. The results of this study also provide strong technical support and theoretical guidance for micro-nanostructure functional surface machining and replicating.

A laser-processed micro/nanostructures surface and its photothermal de-icing and self-cleaning performance

Micro/nanostructures have garnered significant attention and widespread applications in areas such as photocatalysis, coated fabrics, microchips, and sensors. However, high-resolution and multifunctional micro/nanostructures fabrication remains a great challenge. In this work, a novel self-assembly-femtosecond laser processing for the regular micro squares and nano bumps surface on steel substrates is proposed, and a great potential in the field of anti-icing/de-icing and self-cleaning is demonstrated. The surface tension gradient-driven liquid–air self-assembly provides a silica microsphere monolayer, while the post-femtosecond laser process can give precise micro/nano decoration. We systematically explore the impact of laser repetition frequency, scanning speed, and laser incident power on the size and shape of micro/nano decorations that have been studied. The different performances of self-cleaning effects, ice adhesion, and the photothermal de-icing capability due to the change in surface wettability have been demonstrated. This research shows a new pathway for the creation of smart micro/nanostructures surface which possess stable super hydrophilic and highly adhesive superhydrophobic properties, as well as high abrasion resistance. The discovery achieves a suitable blend of multiple functions on the surface of a single material, which can be applied to various surface engineering fields.

Femtosecond Laser Preparation and Biomineralizability of ZrO2 Ceramic Woven Surfaces

Improving the biomineralization of the ZrO2 ceramics surface is of great significance for field of dentistry. A femtosecond laser is used to prepare micro–nano structures on the surface of the ZrO2 ceramics. The contact angle, micromorphology, and chemical composition of the material surface are characterized using a contact angle measurement instrument, scanning electron microscope, and energy‐dispersive spectroscopy. The changes of surface wettability of different samples areanalyzed, and the biomineralization of different micropit surfaces is evaluated through hydroxyapatite (HA) deposition experiments. The results show that the deposition effect of the femtosecond laser‐textured surface is better than that of the original surface. Femtosecond laser processing improves the surface of the material, providing additional nucleation sites for HA, which is conducive to its growth and improvement of deposition efficiency. HA deposited on hydrophobic surfaces consists of a small amount of rod‐shaped and spherical particles. While the deposition effect on hydrophilic surfaces is significantly improved, the deposited particles on hydrophilic surfaces are rod‐shaped and stacked into spherical shapes, growing into pieces after combining, and the particle number increases, the density increases, and they completely cover the textured surface. This study provides a theoretical reference and experimental basis for improving its biomineralization.

Effect of Electrocautery and Laser Treatment on the Composition and Morphology of Surface-Modified Titanium Implants.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different peri-implantitis treatment methods (Er,Cr:YSGG laser, diode laser, and electrocautery) on various titanium implant surfaces: machined; sandblasted, large-grit, and acid-etched; and femtosecond laser-treated surfaces. Grade 4 titanium (Ti) disks, with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of 1 mm, were fabricated and treated using the aforementioned techniques. Subsequently, each treated group of disks underwent different peri-implantitis treatment methods: Er,Cr:YSGG laser (Biolase, Inc., Foothill Ranch, CA, USA), diode laser (Biolase, Inc., Foothill Ranch, CA, USA), and electrocautery (Ellman, Hicksville, NY, USA). Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and wettability were used to characterize the chemical compositions and surfaces of the treated titanium surfaces. Significant changes in surface roughness were observed in both the electrocautery (Sa value of machined surface = 0.469, SLA surface = 1.569, femtosecond laser surface = 1.741, and p = 0.025) and Er,Cr:YSGG laser (Ra value of machined surface = 1.034, SLA surface = 1.380, femtosecond laser surface = 1.437, and p = 0.025) groups. On femtosecond laser-treated titanium implant surfaces, all three treatment methods significantly reduced the surface contact angle (control = 82.2°, diode laser = 74.3°, Er,Cr:YSGG laser = 73.8°, electrocautery = 76.2°, and p = 0.039). Overall, Er,Cr:YSGG laser and electrocautery treatments significantly altered the surface roughness of titanium implant surfaces. As a result of surface composition after different peri-implantitis treatment methods, relative to the diode laser and electrocautery, the Er,Cr:YSGG laser increased oxygen concentration. The most dramatic change was observed after Er:Cr;YSGG laser treatment, urging caution for clinical applications. Changes in surface composition and wettability were observed but were not statistically significant. Further research is needed to understand the biological implications of these peri-implantitis treatment methods.

Performance matching of common pesticides in banana plantations on the surface of banana leaves at different growth stages.

The effective deposition of pesticide droplets on a target leaf surface is critical for decreasing pesticide application rates. The wettability between the target leaf surface and the pesticide spray liquid should be investigated in depth, with the aim of enhancing the adhesion of pesticide solutions. The wetting and deposition behavior of pesticides on target leaves depends on the properties of the liquid and the physical and chemical properties of the leaves. The physical and chemical properties of leaves vary with growth stage. This study aims to investigate the wetting behavior of banana leaf surfaces at different stages. The microstructures and chemical compositions of banana leaf surfaces at different stages were studied using modern methods. The surface structure of banana leaves exhibited a wide variety of characteristics at different growth stages, and the chemical composition changed marginally. The surface free energy (SFE) and polar and non-polar components of banana leaves at different growth stages were measured by examining the contact angles (CA) of different test solutions on the surface of banana leaves. Previous research has suggested that changes in the CA and SFE correlate with changes in leaf surface wettability. In general, the new upper leaves of banana trees are composed of polar components and exhibit hydrophobicity. Non-polar components become dominant as the leaf grows. The back surface of banana leaves was non-polar at all growth stages, with a trend that was opposite to that of the front surface. The critical surface tension of the banana leaf surface at different growth stages ranged from 7.83 to 24.22 mN m-1 , thus falling into the category of a low-energy surface. The surface roughness and chemical characteristics of banana leaves affected the wettability of the leaf surface. Differences in the free energy and the polar and non-polar components of the leaf surface at were seen at different growth stages. This study provides a favorable reference for the rational control of pesticide spraying parameters and the enhancement of wetting and adhesion of the solution on banana leaf surfaces. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Multicolor-tunable biomass thermochromic dyes utilizing tea polyphenols color developer for temperature-controlled linen fabric

Linen, an important industrial crop, is commonly used in the textile field. The development of temperature-controlled linen fabrics is important for the high-value utilization of cellulose-based industrial products. The linen fabrics with color and performance changes controlled by temperature are prepared via the vacuum impregnation process utilizing biomass three-component thermochromic dyes. Currently, three-component thermochromic dyes based on the bisphenol A (BPA) color developer have received special attention due to high saturation color and reversible color-changing performance. However, the toxicity and carcinogenicity of BPA limit its applications in security inks, decorative coatings, plastics, etc. Exploiting excellent and safe biomass color developers for three-component thermochromic dyes remains a challenge. Tea polyphenols (TP) are proposed as alternatives to BPA to prepare the blue, red, yellow, and green three-component thermochromic dyes. According to the laws of subtractive color mixing, multicolor-tunable thermochromic dyes are obtained by color matching of red, yellow, and blue dyes to span multiple shades. Biomass thermochromic dyes are adopted to fabricate temperature-controlled linen fabrics by the vacuum impregnation process. Temperature-controlled linen fabrics can change color reversibly between the original color and achromatic color. The color-changing occurs due to the ring opening and closing of leuco dyes triggered by the solid-to-liquid transition of solvent. The phase transition temperature of the thermochromic dyes absorbed on the linen fabric is 46 ℃. As the temperature increases, the contact angle of temperature-controlled linen fabrics decreases from 129° to 29°, resulting in a change from hydrophobic to hydrophilic with 49 J g−1 of thermal energy stored. The linen fabrics exhibit temperature-controlled changes in color, surface wettability, strength, and thermal insulation. This eco-friendly method with biomass thermochromic dyes for the preparation of color-changing linen fabrics provides a new approach, which is contributing to the development of cellulose-based smart color-changing textiles.
