Magnetohydrodynamic study of Micropolar fluid flow in the porous walled channel with variable viscosity and thermal conductivity: HAM Solution

This article examines the production of entropy and the heat transfer rate in the passage of micropolar fluid through a channel. The micropolar fluid takes place through the porous walled channel under the presence of an external magnetic field acting in the perpendicular direction of the flow. In this work, the thermal conductivity and viscosity of the fluid is considered variable and are the function of the temperature. Here, we consider two-dimensional creeping flow with two different forms of temperature boundary conditions, namely, Newtonian heating (NH) boundary constraints and specified surface temperature (SST) boundary conditions. The flow of the micropolar fluid in the proposed problem is governed by the coupled non-linear PDEs. These PDEs are first transformed into the ODEs by the use of some suitable similarity transformations and then obtained ODEs are further solved by using the semi-analytic Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM). This article shows the effect of various flow parameters on the fluid’s velocity, heat transfer rate, temperature of the fluid, and entropy production for both types of thermal boundary conditions. Through this article, it is concluded that the entropy production is minimal for Newtonian heating (NH) boundary conditions as compared to specified surface temperature (SST) boundary conditions. This result suggests that the NH boundary condition is more suitable for electrical appliances as compared to the SST boundary condition. This type of model is applicable in nuclear reactors, engineering appliances, heat reservoirs, etc.

Convection-permitting simulations reveal expanded rainfall extremes of tropical cyclones affecting South Korea due to anthropogenic warming

AbstractUnderstanding how global warming affects tropical cyclone (TC) intensity and precipitation for target regions is essential to preparing for associated damages but detailed processes remain uncertain. This study provides the first quantification of anthropogenic influences on TC characteristics affecting South Korea using convection-permitting model (CPM) simulations (3 km resolution). For the observed four recent TCs that strongly affected South Korea, CPM simulations were performed under current (ALL) and counterfactual conditions without human influences (NAT). The observed sea surface temperature and lateral boundary conditions were used for ALL while changes attributable to human influences (estimated using CMIP6 multimodel simulations) were removed from observed boundary conditions for NAT runs. ALL experiments captured the observed TC intensity and precipitation reasonably. After removing human influences, TC intensity and precipitation were reduced in NAT experiments. Importantly, areas with extreme precipitation (i.e., having precipitation larger than 150 mm) were found to expand by 16–37% in ALL compared to NAT, which was induced by an enhanced upward motion near the TC core and an increase of background water vapor in line with warming. Further, the role of increased moisture was found to become important as TC moves to mid-latitudes. This study provides valuable insights into how greenhouse warming can intensify TC-induced extreme precipitation over East Asia.

Turbulent melting characteristics of hybrid nano-enhanced molten salt phase change material in rectangular enclosure

The turbulent melting characteristics of hybrid nano-enhanced phase change material (HNEPCM) in a three-dimensional rectangular enclosure has been numerically investigated. The lower and upper walls are partially heated and cooled using constant surface temperature boundary condition and the other surfaces are specified with adiabatic boundary condition. The rectangular enclosure is filled with molten salt phase change material (PCM) of potassium nitrate (KNO3) with melting temperature of 334 °C. The transient melting rates of PCM are investigated by dispersing hybrid mono-dispersed spherical nanoparticles of Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) combined with Silicon dioxide (SiO2), Titanium dioxide (TiO2) and Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The Rayleigh number (Ra) and particle volume fraction (ϕ) are varied in the range of 106≤Ra≤1010 and 2%≤ϕ≤5%. The turbulent phase change process of PCM is modeled using enthalpy–porosity approach with Lam–Bremhorst k−ϵ turbulence model. The three-dimensional governing equations are discretized using Finite difference technique and computations are carried out using Fortran 90 in-house code. The stronger thermal buoyancy force accelerates the melting rate and the melting pattern indicates the accumulation of large quantity of molten metal in the upper regions of the rectangular enclosure. The average melting velocity and turbulent kinetic energy of pure KNO3 PCM is increased by 51.17% and 77.84% by the addition of Al2O3−MWCNT hybrid nanoparticles. The impact of hybrid nanoparticles on the melting rate and thermal performance of PCM is significant in higher Rayleigh number flows than transitional flows. The present results are validated and are in close agreement with the benchmark experimental results.

The Stefan Problem With Internal Heat Generation in Spherical Coordinates

Abstract A weakly time-dependent equation for the evolution of the solid–liquid interface in spherical coordinates, driven by internal heat generation, is derived for constant surface temperature boundary conditions. The derivation comes by making an assumption that the interface moves slowly compared to the changes in the temperature so that the technique of separation of variables may be applied for Stefan numbers less than one. Under this approximation, we can separate the nonhomogeneous heat diffusion equation into transient and steady-state terms, and then integrate to get the temperature relations. With the temperature equations in hand, the derivatives are inserted into the interface equation giving a first-order differential equation for the location of the solid–liquid interface as a function of time. The results are compared to a previously derived quasi-static solution and a numerical simulation generated using the method of catching of the front. This method allows for direct tracking of a moving boundary via the calculation of the time it takes to move from node to node in a discretized grid characteristic of classical finite difference methods. Plots of the interface evolution show excellent agreement between the three methods, especially for lower Stefan numbers. The quality of the approximation decreases as the Stefan number increases, but the model is more accurate than the previously studied quasi-static model. For the Stefan numbers St = 1.0 and 10.0, the weakly time-dependent solutions are in better agreement with the numerical results than the quasi-static solutions.

Representation of Lake–Atmosphere Interactions and Lake-Effect Snowfall in the Laurentian Great Lakes Basin among HighResMIP Global Climate Models

Abstract Credible modeling, tools, and guidance, regarding the changing Laurentian Great Lakes and the climatic impacts, are needed by local decision-makers to inform their management and planning. The present study addresses this need through a model evaluation study of the representation of lake–atmosphere interactions and resulting lake-effect snowfall in the Great Lakes region. Analysis focuses on an extensive ensemble of 74 historical simulations generated by 23 high-resolution global climate models (GCMs) from the High-Resolution Model Intercomparison Project (HighResMIP). The model assessment addresses the modeling treatment of the Great Lakes, the spatial distribution and seasonality of climatological snowfall, the seasonal cycle of lake-surface temperatures and overlake turbulent fluxes, and the lake-effect ratio between upwind and downwind precipitation. A deeper understanding of model performance and biases is achieved by partitioning results between HighResMIP GCMs that are 1) coupled to 1D lake models versus GCMs that exclude lake models, 2) between prescribed-ocean model configurations versus fully coupled configurations, and 3) between deep Lake Superior versus relatively shallow Lake Erie. While the HighResMIP GCMs represent the Great Lakes by a spectrum of approaches that include land grid cells, ocean grid cells (with lake surface temperature and ice cover boundary conditions provided by the Met Office Hadley Center Sea Ice and Sea Surface Temperature Dataset), and 1D lake models, the current investigation demonstrates that none of these rudimentary approaches adequately represent the complex nature of seasonal lake temperature and ice cover evolution and its impact on lake–atmosphere interactions and lake-effect precipitation in the Great Lakes region. Significance Statement The purpose of this study is to evaluate the capability of high-resolution global climate models to simulate lake–atmosphere interactions and lake-effect snowfall in the Great Lakes region, given the critical influence of the lakes on regional climate and vast societal and environmental impacts of lake-effect snowfall. It is determined that the models inadequately represent lake temperatures and ice cover, often leading to insufficient annual snowfall in the lake-effect zones. More advanced, three-dimensional lake models need to be coupled to climate models to support greater credibility in regional lake and climate simulations and future climate projections.

The Flexible Modelling Framework for the Met Office Unified Model (Flex-UM, using UM 12.0 release)

Abstract. The Met Office Unified Model (UM) is a world-leading atmospheric weather and climate model. In addition to comprehensive simulations of the atmosphere, the UM is capable of running idealised simulations, such as the dry physics Held–Suarez test case, radiative convective equilibrium and simulating planetary atmospheres other than Earth. However, there is a disconnect between the simplicity of the idealised UM model configurations and the full complexity of the UM. This gap inhibits the broad use of climate model hierarchy approaches within the UM. To fill this gap, we have developed the Flexible Modelling Framework for the UM – Flex-UM – which broadens the climate model hierarchy capabilities within the UM. Flex-UM was designed to replicate the atmospheric physics of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) idealised moist physics aqua-planet model. New parameterisations have been implemented in Flex-UM, including simplified schemes for convection, large-scale precipitation, radiation, boundary layer and sea surface temperature (SST) boundary conditions. These idealised parameterisations have been implemented in a modular way, so that each scheme is available for use in any model configuration. This has the advantage that we can incrementally add or remove complexity within the model hierarchy. We compare Flex-UM to ERA5 and aqua-planet simulations using the Isca climate modelling framework (based on the GFDL moist physics aqua-planet model) and comprehensive simulations of the UM (using the GA7.0 configuration). We also use two SST boundary conditions to compare the models (fixed SST and a slab ocean). We find the Flex-UM climatologies are similar to both Isca and GA7.0 (though Flex-UM is generally a little cooler, with higher relative humidity and a less pronounced storm track). Flex-UM has a single Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) in the slab-ocean simulation but a double-ITCZ in the fixed-SST simulation. Further work is needed to ensure that the atmospheric energy budget closes to within 1–2 W m−2, as the current configuration of Flex-UM gains 9–11 W m−2 (the range covers the two SST boundary conditions). Flex-UM greatly extends the modelling hierarchy capabilities of the UM and offers a simplified framework for developing, testing and evaluating parameterisations within the UM.

Impact of surface temperature and convective boundary conditions on a Nanofluid flow over a radially stretched Riga plate

The current work provides the optimal homotopic analytical methodology for the steady circulation over a non-isothermal radially stretched Riga plate/disc unit. The attributes of the heat, along with the mass transfer process, are assessed in the existence of variable transport and magnetic features. Radial stretched Riga disc is considered along with additional realistic boundary heating conditions, namely, prescribed surface temperature as well as prescribed surface concentration, convective boundary conditions and also zero mass flux concentration on the surface area of the Riga disc. The model tracks Brownian motion as well as the thermal diffusion of nanoparticles in fluid circulation all at once. Regulating equations, which are highly coupled, are changed right into non-dimensional equations using appropriate transformations of similarity. Through assembling series solutions, the resulting framework is planned and examined. Graphic summaries are offered for the rheological qualities of various parameters in size for velocity, temperature, as well as nanoparticles. The modified Hartman number improves the velocity distribution and reduces the temperature distribution in both prescribed surface temperature and convective boundary condition cases. RETRACTED: Bioconvection of nanofluid flow in a thin moving needle in the presence of activation energy with surface temperature boundary conditions

A comparative analysis is formed to analyze the combined effects of a binary chemical reaction and activation energy in the flow of bio-nanofluid due to the thin moving needle using the mathematical nanofluid model offered by Buongiorno with different boundary conditions namely, Newtonian heating and prescribed surface temperature. The governing partial differential equations converted into a set of final controlled governing physical flow equations by using similarity variables and then solved numerically by Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg method along with shooting technique and analytically by differential transform method. The results gained for the dimensionless velocity, temperature, concentration, motile diffusivity number, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are presented through graphs and tables. The present study reveals that an enhancement in the pertinent parameters has considerably altered the physical characteristics of the flow and heat transfer, which applies in biosensors and biomedical instrumentation. Also, the rate of heat transfer from the needle to the fluid is controlled by applying Newtonian heating than by applying prescribed surface temperature against all the parameters. In addition, we carried out the statistical analysis to determine the dependence of the physical parameter on the rate of heat transfer for both cases of heating process.

Impact of Additive Manufacturing on Internal Cooling Channels With Varying Diameters and Build Directions

AbstractThe use of additive manufacturing (AM) processes, such as direct metal laser sintering, provides the design freedom required to incorporate complex cooling schemes in gas turbine components. Additively manufactured turbine components have a range of cooling feature sizes and, because of the inherent three-dimensionality, a wide range of build angles. Previous studies have shown that AM built directions influence internal channel surface roughness that, in turn, augment heat transfer and pressure loss. This study investigates the impact of AM on channel feature size and builds direction relative to tolerance, surface roughness, pressure losses, and convective cooling. Multiple AM coupons were built from Inconel 718 consisting of channels with different diameters and a variety of build directions. An experimental rig was used to measure pressure drop to calculate friction factor and was used to impose a constant surface temperature boundary condition to collect Nusselt number over a range of Reynolds numbers. Significant variations in surface roughness and geometric deviations from the design intent were observed for distinct build directions and channel sizes. These differences led to notable impacts in friction factor and Nusselt number augmentations, which were a strong function of build angle.

Thermal performance analysis of a Solar parabolic dish concentrator system with modified cavity receiver

PurposeThis paper aims to present the numerical models and experimental outcomes pertain to the performance of the parabolic dish concentrator system with a modified cavity-type receiver (hemispherical-shaped).Design/methodology/approachThe numerical models were evolved based on two types of boundary conditions; isothermal receiver surface and non-isothermal receiver surface. For validation of the numerical models with experimental results, three statistical terms were used: mean of absolute deviation, R2 and root mean square error.FindingsThe thermal efficiency of the receiver values obtained using the numerical model with a non-isothermal receiver surface found agreeing well with experimental results. The numerical model with non-isothermal surface boundary condition exhibited more accurate results as compared to that with isothermal surface boundary condition. The receiver heat loss analysis based on the experimental outcomes is also carried out to estimate the contributions of various modes of heat transfer. The losses by radiation, convection and conduction contribute about 27.47%, 70.89% and 1.83%, in the total receiver loss, respectively.Practical implicationsAn empirical correlation based on experimental data is also presented to anticipate the effect of studied parameters on the receiver collection efficiency. The anticipations may help to adopt the technology for practical use.Social implicationsThe developed models would help to design and anticipating the performance of the dish concentrator system with a modified cavity receiver that may be used for applications e.g. power generation, water heating, air-conditioning, solar cooking, solar drying, energy storage, etc.Originality/valueThe originality of this manuscript comprising presenting a differential-mathematical analysis/modeling of hemispherical shaped modified cavity receiver with non-uniform surface temperature boundary condition. It can estimate the variation of temperature of heat transfer fluid (water) along with the receiver height, by taking into account the receiver cavity losses by means of radiation and convection modes. The model also considers the radiative heat exchange among the internal ring-surface elements of the cavity.

Spectral method solutions of a variable aspect ratio duct flow in a uniform transverse magnetic field with two different thermal boundary conditions

Abstract A laminar electrically-conducting flow inside an electrically-insulated rectangular duct in a uniform transverse magnetic field with both uniform surface temperature and uniform heat flux boundary conditions are considered numerically. The problem with aspect ratios of the range from 1:10 to 10:1 and Hartmann number M up to 1000 is solved using a highly accurate technique which is spectral method. The flow variables are expanded in terms of linear combinations of Chebyshev polynomials chosen to satisfy the boundary conditions implicitly. The resulting equations are collocated using the Gauss points to produce a system of nonlinear algebraic equations which is solved iteratively using Gauss elimination. Convergence properties of the numerical method reveals that for aspect ratio of less than 4 to 1, the flow is well resolved with as small as 29 by 29 Chebyshev polynomials; however, as the aspect ratio increases to more than 4 to 1, the number of polynomials required for an adequate resolution can be as high as 49 by 49 polynomials. It is found when the magnetic field is turned on, the pressure drop, in general, increases with the field for different aspect ratios. However, the pressure drop increase will be slower near the aspect ratio of 10. Also, the heat transfer increases with the field for most of the cases, but for some cases the field will have adverse effect on the heat transfer, particularly, for constant surface temperature boundary condition at aspect ratio > 4 and M 4 and M

Magnetohydrodynamic micropolar fluid flow in a porous medium with multiple slip conditions

Theoretically, micropolar fluids are used in the biomedical investigations. This study analyzes the flow, heat and mass transfer in a magneto-micropolar reactive fluid over a nonlinear stretching sheet in a saturated non-Darcy porous medium. The impact of velocity, thermal and concentration slips with prescribed surface temperature and concentration boundary conditions are examined. Mathematical models are formulated and solved using an iterative technique spectral quasi-linearization method. The results of numerical simulations are depicted graphically. The present results when cross-checked with earlier reported data in the literature for limiting conditions exhibit good agreement. The results show that the momentum and thermal boundary layer thicknesses fall as the nonlinear stretching parameter increases while the opposite occur with a rise in the thermal conductivity parameter.

Coupled CFD framework with mesoscale urban climate model: Application to microscale urban flows with weak synoptic forcing

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed in the open-source CFD toolbox OpenFOAM for studying microscale urban flows during periods of weak synoptic forcing. The OpenFOAM model is coupled to the regional atmospheric model COSMO to provide boundary conditions for atmospheric variables. The urban canopy model DCEP is used to calculate surface energy balance and estimate the surface temperature boundary conditions. The proposed coupled model was tested for simulations of urban flows in a dense urban area of Zurich, Switzerland during a heatwave day and a day with strong background regional winds. It is shown that the coupled OpenFOAM model can qualitatively resolve small scale unsteady buoyant flows induced by heated buildings and water bodies. Comparing with the observation measurement, the coupled OpenFOAM model and COSMO can predict diurnal temperature with small errors for both sample days. For the wind speed and the wind direction, the errors of both models are higher on the heatwave day, due to the presence of unsteady buoyant flows. It is concluded that to obtain quantitatively accurate results, several improvements in transport models, surface fluxes, coupling strategies, etc. are needed. In addition, the results should be compared comprehensively with a well-located network of sensors.

An Interdecadal Shift of the Extratropical Teleconnection From the Tropical Pacific During Boreal Summer

AbstractThe extratropical teleconnection from the tropical Pacific in boreal summer exhibits a significant shift over the past 70 years. Cyclonic circulation anomalies over the North Atlantic and Eurasia associated with El Niño in the later period (1978–2014) are absent in the earlier period (1948–1977). An initialized atmospheric model ensemble, performed with prescribed sea surface temperature (SST) boundary conditions, replicates some key features of the shift in the teleconnection, providing clear evidence that this shift is not simply due to internal atmospheric variability or random sampling. Additional ensemble simulations, one with detrended tropical SSTs and another with constant external forcing are analyzed. In the model, the teleconnection shift is associated with climatological atmospheric circulation changes, which are substantially reduced in the simulation with detrended tropical SSTs. These results demonstrate that the climatological atmospheric circulation and associated teleconnection changes are largely forced by tropical SST trends.

Theoretical analysis of thermal entrance problem for blood flow: An extension of classical Graetz problem for Casson fluid model using generalized orthogonality relations

An analysis of classical Graetz problem is carried out for the case of fluid obeying the Casson constitutive equation. The considered model physically corresponds to the thermal entry flow of blood in a duct. The governing equation for the premeditated problem is investigated by employing the separation of variables approach in conjunction with the MATLAB built in package bvp4c for the calculation of the eigenvalues and related numerical solution of the eigenvalue problem. The solution is computed for the case of uniform surface temperature boundary condition for both flat and circular geometries. The axial diffusion and viscous dissipation effects on temperature field are also taken into account. The expressions of bulk mean temperature and Nusselt number are presented and discussed in terms of the main effect brought by the yield stress parameter, Peclet number and Brinkman number. It is found that both local and mean Nusselt numbers for blood enhance considerably with the increase of dimensionless plug radius and Brinkman number. In contrast, the thermal entrance length reduces with the rise of Peclet number. The results of present analysis have potential applications in development of nano fluidic, microfluidic and bio-medical devices used in haemodialysis and oxygenation.

Numerical investigation on the heat transfer characteristics of liquid-liquid plug-train in microchannels

Liquid-liquid plug-train is of great importance due to its wide applications in the heat transfer enhancement and the richness of underlying physics. This paper presented a theoretical and numerical study of the liquid-liquid plug-train in a microchannel. Based on the analytical model of flow field, the heat transfer process in liquid-liquid plug-train was investigated. The constant surface temperature boundary condition was considered. Nusselt number (Nu) and heat transfer index (η) were employed to evaluate the heat transfer characteristics of liquid-liquid plug-train in the microchannel. Three stages of the heat transfer process in liquid-liquid plug-train were identified: (i) development of thermal boundary layer (TBL); (ii) advection of heated/fresh fluid in the liquid-liquid plug train; and (iii) thermally fully developed flow. The effects of the thermal conductivity ratio and the plug length ratio were investigated. A low plug length ratio was found to be effective in heat transfer enhancement in the microchannel.

Riga – Plate flow of γ Al2O3-water/ethylene glycol with effective Prandtl number impacts

In many industrial processes, the cooling process can be improved by varying the flow geometry or changing the additives in the working fluid. The present work concentrates on the flow of γ Al2O3 –Water/Ethylene Glycol over a Gailitis and Lielausis device with an effective Prandtl number for the first time. The thermal transport aspects of electro-MHD boundary layer flow of γ Al2O3 nanofluids over a stretchable Riga plate are studied in two dimensions. The wall parallel Lorentz force is produced due to an external electric field by Riga plate to control the nanofluid flow. Mathematical models are developed with an effective Prandtl number. The no-slip and the prescribed surface temperature boundary conditions are assumed. Results are discussed using numerical results obtained by fourth order RK method with shooting technique. Special case analytical solutions are presented for both momentum and energy equations. The increasing behaviour in velocity profile and decreasing behaviours in temperature, skin friction and Nusselt number are observed with increasing modified Hartmann number. The higher modified Hartmann number leads to a sudden enhancement in the velocity profile of the nanofluid in the presence of effective Pr near the riga plate wall.

Thermally Radiative Viscous Fluid Flow Over Curved Moving Surface in Darcy-Forchheimer Porous Space

A numerical analysis is developed for incompressible hydromagnetic viscous fluid passed through a curved stretching surface. Fluid saturated by porous space is bounded by curved surface. Term of porous medium is characterized by implementation of Darcy-Forchheimer theory. Adequate similarity variables are implemented to develop a system of non-linear ordinary differential system of equations, which govern the flow behavior. The impact of radiation constraint and Eckert number is incorporated in the energy equation. Numerical scheme based on RKF45 technique is implemented to solve the derived flow model. Prescribed heat flux (PHF) and prescribed surface temperature (PST) boundary conditions are utilized on temperature with Prescribed Surface Concentration (PSC) and Prescribed Mass Flux (PMF) on concentration. Flow behavior is discussed for both the slip and no-slip conditions. Dimensionless physical quantities are presented through graphs and tables.

The impact of azimuthally asymmetric carbon deposition upon pellet-clad mechanical interaction in advanced gas reactor fuel

Cracked nuclear fuel pellets were modelled in the r-θ plane with an azimuthally varying clad surface temperature boundary condition using the PELICAN set of fuel performance models for the commercial finite element software, Abaqus. The temperature boundary condition was assumed to represent heat transfer impairment due to an azimuthally asymmetric carbon deposit on advanced gas-cooled reactor pins. The model predicts the radial and azimuthal displacement of the idealised fuel fragments, together with the resulting elastic, creep and plastic strains in the cladding. These were compared to simulations assuming a uniformly hot or cold boundary condition. Apart from a short period during the return to power from reduced power (70%) operation and outages, the hoop stress in the simulation with an azimuthally varying clad surface temperature was bounded by that of models with a uniform hot or cold surface temperature. The reduced stress was proposed to be due to the greater ability of the fuel fragments to relocate in order to accommodate changes to the power level. As a result, the creep strains in the model with an azimuthally varying clad surface temperature were lower than assuming either a uniform hot or cold boundary condition.

Role of SST Patterns on Surface Wind Modulation of a Heavy Midlatitude Precipitation Event

AbstractThe mechanisms controlling the influence of the sea surface temperature (SST) structure on the surface winds are studied by means of numerical simulations run with a nonhydrostatic fully compressible state‐of‐the‐art numerical model in a realistic midlatitudes setup, leading to the 9 October 2014 Genoa heavy rainfall event. Starting from a simulation with high‐resolution submesoscale eddy‐permitting SST field, the surface temperature boundary conditions are changed to enhance, reduce, or smooth the SST gradient. It is found that the marine atmospheric boundary layer responds to the submesoscale SST forcing structures over time scales of the order of hours. In particular, through the downward momentum mixing mechanism, the presence of SST horizontal gradients impacts the spatial structure of the surface wind convergence, which can displace the convective heavy rain bands that develop over the sea.
