Effect of mechanical instrumentation on titanium implant surface properties.

To assess the impact of mechanical decontamination using rotary brushes on the surface topography, elemental composition, roughness, and wettability of titanium implant surfaces. Four commercially available rotary brushes were used: Labrida BioClean Brush® (LB), i-Brush1 (IB), NiTiBrush Nano (NiTiB), and Peri-implantitis Brush (PIB). Seventy-five titanium discs with sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched (SLA) surfaces were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 15): LB, IB, NiTiB, PIB, and a control group. Each disc was treated for 60 seconds with the respective rotary brush according to the manufacturer's instructions. Surface morphology was analysed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), surface elemental composition with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), surface roughness via optical profilometry, and wettability with a droplet shape analyser. SEI analysis revealed morphological changes, including scratches, flattening, and loose titanium particles in the IB, PIB, and NiTiB groups, whereas the LB group preserved the original surface morphology. SEM-EDX analysis showed that LB, PIB, and NiTiB groups closely match the control elemental composition. However, IB groups showed significantly different composition. Surface roughness values in the IB, PIB, and NiTiB groups differed significantly from the control (p < 0.05), whereas the LB group had comparable roughness values (p > 0.05). Contact angle measurements indicated enhanced wettability in IB, PIB, and NiTiB groups (p < 0.05), while the LB group exhibited values comparable to the control (p > 0.05). Mechanical decontamination of implant surfaces utilising rotary brushes can alter implant surface properties.

Unlocking Osseointegration: Surface Engineering Strategies for Enhanced Dental Implant Integration.

Tooth loss is a prevalent problem faced by individuals of all ages across the globe. Various biomaterials, such as metals, bioceramics, polymers, composites of ceramics and polymers, etc., have been used for the manufacturing of dental implants. The success of a dental implant primarily depends on its osseointegration rate. The current surface modification techniques fail to imbibe the basics of tooth development, which can impart better mineralization and osseointegration. This can be improved by developing an understanding of the developmental pathways of dental tissue. Stimulating the correct signaling pathways through inductive material systems can bring about a paradigm shift in dental implant materials. The current review focuses on the developmental pathway and mineralization process that happen during tooth formation and how surface modifications can help in biomimetic mineralization, thereby enhancing osseointegration. We further describe the effect of dental implant surface modifications on mineralization, osteoinduction, and osseointegration; both in vitro and in vivo. The review will help us to understand the natural process of teeth development and mineralization and how the surface properties of dental implants can be further improved to mimic teeth development, in turn increasing osseointegration.

Tailoring magnesium-doped coatings for improving surface and biological properties of titanium-based dental implants

Physicochemical modifications of biomaterials have been proposed to overcome bone integration impairment and microbial infections. The magnesium (Mg) incorporation on dental implant surfaces has shown positive results in bone-to-implant contact and in the reduction of microbial colonization. Here, we explored the potential of using different Mg precursors to synthesize coatings via plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) on commercially pure titanium (cpTi), aiming to optimize the surface and biological properties. For this, we investigated Mg acetate and Mg nitrate precursors in different concentrations (0.04 M and 0.12 M), using calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) as the base electrolyte for all groups. Coatings with only the CaP base electrolyte were used as the control group. The surfaces were characterized by confocal laser scanning microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, film thickness measurement, profilometry, wettability, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical behavior, and ion release. For biological analyses, the adhesion (2 h) of Streptococcus sanguinis was evaluated, as well as MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells proliferation at 1 and 3 days, and mineralization of calcium phosphates after 28 days. PEO treatment using different Mg precursors promoted physicochemical modifications of cpTi. The experimental groups MgN 0.04 and MgN 0.12 exhibited higher surface roughness and wettability compared to the other surfaces. Regardless of the Mg precursor, the higher the ion concentration in the electrolyte solution, the higher the Mg atomic concentration on the surfaces. Concerning the electrochemical behavior, the results indicated that the incorporation of Mg in the coatings may enhance the electrochemical performance. Mg treated surfaces did not promote greater bacterial adherence when compared to the control. MgAc 0.04 and MgAc 0.12 coatings displayed improved MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblastic cells proliferation at day 3 compared to other groups. The hydroxyapatite formation on MgAc 0.12 surfaces was higher than in the other groups. Our data indicate that Mg precursor selection positively influences physicochemical and biological properties of coatings. Specifically, MgAc 0.12 surfaces showed the most promising surface features with greater cell proliferation, without affecting microbial colonization, being an excellent candidate for surface treatment of titanium-based dental implants.

Titanium: A systematic review of the relationship between crystallographic profile and cell adhesion.

Dental implant surface properties such as roughness, wettability, and porosity ensure cell interaction and tissue integration. The clinical performance of dental implants depends on the crystallographic texture and protein and cell bonds to the substrates, where grain size, orientation, and inclination are parameters responsible for favoring osteoblast adhesion and limiting bacterial adhesion. The lack of consensus on the best crystallographic plan for cell adhesion prompted this systematic review, which aims to answer the following question: "What is the influence of the crystallographic plane on titanium surfaces on cell adhesion?" by evaluating the literature on the crystallographic characteristics of titanium and how these dictate topographical parameters and influence the cell adhesion of devices made from this material. It followed the Preferred Reporting Standards for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) registered with the Open Science Framework (OSF) (osf.io/xq6kv). The search strategy was based on the PICOS method. It chose in vitro articles that analyzed crystallographic structure correlated with cell adhesion and investigated the microstructure and its effects on cell culture, different crystal orientation distributions, and the influence of crystallinity. The search strategies were applied to the different electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Embase, and Google Scholar, and the articles found were attached to the Rayyan digital platform and assessed blindly. The Joanna Bringgs Institute (JBI) tool assessed the risk of bias. A total of 248 articles were found. After removing duplicates, 192 were analyzed by title and abstract. Of these, 18 were selected for detailed reading in their entirety, 9 of which met the eligibility criteria. The included studies presented a low risk of bias. The role of the crystallographic orientation of the exposed faces in a multicrystalline material is little discussed in the scientific literature and its impact is recognized as dictating the topographical characteristics of the material that facilitate cell adhesion.

Osteointegration of Ti Bone Implants: A Study on How Surface Parameters Control the Foreign Body Response.

The integration of titanium (Ti)-based implants with bone is limited, resulting in implant failure. This lack of osteointegration is due to the foreign body response (FBR) that occurs after the implantation of biodevices. The process begins with protein adsorption, which is governed by implant surface properties, e.g., chemistry, charge, wettability, and/or topography. The distribution and composition of the protein layer in turn influence the recruitment, differentiation, and modulation of immune and bone cells. The subsequent events that occur at the bone-material interface will ultimately determine whether the implant is encapsulated or will integrate with bone. Despite the numerous studies evaluating the influence of surface properties in the various stages of the FBR, the factors that affect tissue-material interactions are often studied in isolation or in small correlations due to the technical challenges involved in assessing them in vitro or in vivo. Consequently, the influence of protein conformation on the Ti bone implant surface design remains an unresolved research question. The objective of this review is to comprehensively evaluate the existing literature on the effect of surface parameters of Ti and its alloys in the stages of FBR, with a particular focus on protein adsorption and osteoimmunomodulation. This evaluation aims to systematically describe these effects on bone formation.

Evaluation of the Loss of Surface Roughness Following the Use of Four Different Instruments for Mechanical Debridement of Dental Implants: An In-vitro Pilot Study

To compare the dental implant surface properties such as mean surface roughness, roughness depth, and the surface loss produced by different prophylactic instrument types. Twenty-four surfaces of twelve dental implants were treated using titanium curettes, titanium-coated curettes, an air abrasion unit, and titanium brushes. The dental implants were inserted partially into a Styrofoam base, exposing one-third to simulate cases of peri-implantitis. The exposed surface was coated with artificial dental calculus (ADC) and divided into four groups for treatment. The arithmetic mean surface roughness (Ra) and the mean roughness depth (Rz) were assessed using the confocal microscope, and the surface loss (SL) area was calculated from the scanning electron microscopic images using an image analysis software. The Ra value varied between 1.08 to 0.29 µm, the Rz value between 10.3 to 70.5 µm, and the mean surface loss area between 154 to 9410 µm2. The One-way ANOVA analysis showed a statistically significant difference between the four groups (P < 0.05). The air abrasion unit showed the highest mean roughness value of 1.08 ± 0.14 µm, mean roughness depth of 70.5 ± 2.21 µm, and a minor surface area loss of 154 ± 132 µm2. In comparison, the titanium brushes showed the least Ra and Rz of 0.29 ± 0.05 µm and 10.3 ± 2.32 µm, respectively, whereas the titanium-coated curettes showed the highest loss of surface area 9410 ± 91.6 µm2. The air abrasion unit was shown to have the least detrimental effect on the implant surface when removing the artificial dental calculus compared to the other three methods.

Micro-WEDM of Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr Alloy for Antibacterial Properties: Experimental Investigation and Optimization

Recent developments of orthopedic implant applications have discovered a variety of new metallic biomaterials known as β-type titanium alloys. The μ-WEDM (micro-wire electro discharge machining) surface treatment technique, capable of improving the surface properties of orthopedic implants, was studied in a machining Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr alloy. This study aimed to evaluate material removal rate (MRR), kerf width, average surface roughness, microhardness and antibacterial response at different machining parameters which are capacitance (1 nF, 10 nF and 100 nF) and gap voltage (80 V, 95 V and 110 V). The Taguchi method was used to optimize the mentioned output parameters, while ANOVA (analysis of variance) described the significance and contribution of capacitance and gap voltage. Grey relation analysis (GRA) was conducted to perform multiple output optimization. For antibacterial response, cultivations of B. subtilis, E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S. aureus bacteria on treated surfaces for 72 h were performed. As the results, optimal values of MRR, kerf width, crater area, average surface roughness and microhardness were equal to 0.0637 mm3/min, 93.0 μm, 21.8 μm2, 0.348 μm and 442 HV, respectively. Meanwhile, μ-WEDM treatment improved antibacterial properties while the highest antibacterial response was achieved at the lowest average surface roughness resulting in least biofilm formation on treated surfaces.

Biomechanical Investigation of the Osseointegration of Titanium Implants With Different Surfaces Placed With Allogeneic Bone Transfer.

Allogeneic grafts can be preferred to autogenous grafts in plastic and oral-maxillofacial surgery for vertical and horizontal bone deficiencies. Implant surface properties are an important factor in osseointegration. This study aims to evaluate the osseointegration levels of titanium implants with machined, sand-blasted, and acid-etched (SLA) and resorbable blast material (RBM) surfaces placed together with allogeneic bone tissue transplantations obtained from the tibia bone using biomechanical method. Twenty-five female Sprague-Dawley rats were included in the study. The rats were divided into groups in which machined (n=7), SLA (n=7), and RBM (n=7) surface implants were placed with the transplantation of bone taken from the tibia. Four rats (both left and right tibias) were used as donors. Grafts and implants were surgically placed in the corticocancellous part of the metaphyseal area of the tibia bones of rats. At the end of the 4-week experimental setup, all rats were killed, and the implants and surrounding bone tissue were subjected to biomechanical reverse torque analysis (N/cm). Sand-blasted acid-etched surface implants were observed to have higher biomechanical osseointegration levels than RBM and machined surface implants ( P <0.05). No statistical difference could be detected between the RBM and machined surface implants ( P >0.05). On the basis of the limited results of this study, it can be concluded that the osseointegration levels of SLA surface implants placed with allogeneic bone transplantation may be better than those of machined and RBM surface implants.

Surface modification of biomedical titanium alloy for hard tissue repair and reconstruction

In biomedical applications, various materials are used, including metals and their alloys, polymers and ceramics. Among them, titanium (Ti) and titanium alloys are widely utilised in implant materials due to their excellent corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength. However, despite these advantages, titanium is biologically inert and does not integrate well with human cells. Therefore, surface modification of titanium implants plays a crucial role in determining the rate of osseointegration and the overall success of the implants. The primary objective of this review is to provide a detailed introduction to surface modification technologies for titanium alloy implants. The aim is to enhance the biological activity, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and antibacterial properties and reduce the release of ions from the implants. By modifying the surface of titanium implants, it is possible to create a more favourable environment for cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. Various techniques, such as physical methods (e.g. sandblasting, acid etching) and chemical methods (e.g. surface oxidation, plasma treatment) can be employed to modify the surface properties of titanium implants. These surface modification techniques can enhance the interaction between the implant and the surrounding biological environment, promoting osseointegration and improving the long-term stability of the implant. Additionally, surface modifications can help reduce the release of potentially harmful ions from the implant, minimise bacterial adhesion and improve the overall biocompatibility of the implant. In conclusion, surface modification of titanium alloy implants is a critical aspect of biomedical engineering. By improving the biocompatibility of titanium implants, these modifications contribute to the success and longevity of implants used in hard tissue repair and reconstruction.

Implant surface modifications and their impact on osseointegration and peri-implant diseases through epigenetic changes: A scoping review.

Dental implant surfaces and their unique properties can interact with the surrounding oral tissues through epigenetic cues. The present scoping review provides current perspectives on surface modifications of dental implants, their impact on the osseointegration process, and the interaction between implant surface properties and epigenetics, also in peri-implant diseases. Findings of this review demonstrate the impact of innovative surface treatments on the epigenetic mechanisms of cells, showing promising results in the early stages of osseointegration. Dental implant surfaces with properties of hydrophilicity, nanotexturization, multifunctional coatings, and incorporated drug-release systems have demonstrated favorable outcomes for early bone adhesion, increased antibacterial features, and improved osseointegration. The interaction between modified surface morphologies, different chemical surface energies, and/or release of molecules within the oral tissues has been shown to influence epigenetic mechanisms of the surrounding tissues caused by a physical-chemical interaction. Epigenetic changes around dental implants in the state of health and disease are different. In conclusion, emerging approaches in surface modifications for dental implants functionalized with epigenetics have great potential with a significant impact on modulating bone healing during osseointegration.

Titanium Surface Modification Techniques to Enhance Osteoblasts and Bone Formation for Dental Implants: A Narrative Review on Current Advances

Surface modifications for titanium, a material of choice for dental implants, can greatly alter the surface micro/nanotopography and composition of implants, leading to notable enhancements in their hydrophilicity, mechanical properties, osseointegration performance, and antibacterial performance, as well as their impacts on osteoblast activity and bone formation processes. This article aims to update titanium surface modification techniques for dental implants from the past to the present, along with their effects on osteoblasts and bone formation, by thoroughly summarizing findings from published studies. Peer-reviewed articles published in English consisting of in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies on titanium dental implant surface treatments were searched in Google Scholar, PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, and the Scopus databases from January 1983 to December 2023 and included in this review. The previous studies show that implant surface roughness, condition, and hydrophilicity are crucial for osteoblast adhesion and growth. While various techniques enhance osseointegration comparably, one of the most common approaches to accomplishing these properties is sandblasting large-grit acid etching surface treatment and coating with hydroxyapatite or chitosan. In conclusion, this review points out the efficacy of different subtraction and addition techniques in enhancing the surface properties of titanium dental implants, promoting favorable outcomes in terms of osteoblast activity and bone formation in various degrees. However, most existing studies predominantly compare treated and non-treated titanium, revealing a need for more comprehensive studies comparing the effects of various modification techniques. Moreover, further investigation of factors playing a role in the dynamic osseointegration process in addition to osteoblasts and their functions, as well as improved surface modification techniques for the treatment of compromised patients, is greatly required.

Innate immune regulation in dental implant osseointegration.

Dental implant osseointegration comprises two types of bone formation-contact and distance osteogenesis-which result in bone formation originating from the implant surface or bone edges, respectively. The physicochemical properties of the implant surface regulate initial contact osteogenesis by directly tuning the osteoprogenitor cells in the peri-implant environment. However, whether these implant surface properties can regulate osteoprogenitor cells distant from the implant remains unclear. Innate immune cells, including neutrophils and macrophages, govern bone metabolism, suggesting their involvement in osseointegration and distance osteogenesis. This narrative review discusses the role of innate immunity in osseointegration and the effects of implant surface properties on distant osteogenesis, focusing on innate immune regulation. The role of innate immunity in bone formation and the effects of implant surface properties on innate immune function were reviewed based on clinical, animal, and in vitro studies. Neutrophils and macrophages are responsible for bone formation during osseointegration, via inflammatory mediators. The microroughness and hydrophilic status of titanium implants have the potential to alleviate this inflammatory response of neutrophils, and induce an anti-inflammatory response in macrophages, to tune both contact and distance osteogenesis through the activation of osteoblasts. Thus, the surface micro-roughness and hydrophilicity of implants can regulate the function of distant osteoprogenitor cells through innate immune cells. Surface modification of implants aimed at regulating innate immunity may be useful in promoting further osteogenesis and overcoming the limitations encountered in severe situations, such as early loading protocol application.

Biocompatibility and Osseointegration of the Biomimetically Coated and Water-Soluble Eggshell Membrane Protein Cross-Linked Ti Alloy Screws.

The surface properties of dental and orthopedic implants are directly related to their osseointegration rate. Coating and/or modifying the implant surface might reduce the time of healing. In this study, we aimed to examine the effects of a hybrid surface consisting of a brushite surface coating and cross-linked water-soluble eggshell membrane protein on the osseointegration of titanium (Ti) screws under in vivo conditions. Twenty Ti alloy screws were implanted monocortically in anteromedial regions of New Zealand rabbit tibiae. Ten screws were untreated and used as controls. The remaining 10 screws were coated with calcium phosphate and following cross-linked with ostrich eggshell membrane protein. All rabbits were sacrificed six weeks after the surgery. Peri-screw tissues were evaluated by micro-computed tomography (µ-CT), histological and histomorphometrical methods. The μ-CT assessments indicated that the experimental group had significantly higher mean bone surface area (BSA) and trabeculae number (TbN) than those of the control group (p ˂ 0.05). Bone surface area (BV), trabecular separation (TbSp), trabecular thickness (TbTh), and bone mineral density (BMD) scores of the control and experimental groups were quite similar (p > 0.05). The vascularization score of the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group (4.29 vs. 0.92%). No sign of the graft-versus-host reaction was observed. Our findings reveal that coating Ti alloy implants with calcium phosphate cross-linked with ostrich eggshell membrane protein increases the osseointegration of Ti alloy screws by increasing the bone surface area, number of trabeculae and vascularization in the implant site.

Influence of surface topographic morphologies and nanoparticle incorporation on surface properties of pure Ti implants for oral applications

One common problem in using titanium (Ti) dental implants is peri-implantitis. To prevent peri-implantitis on Ti implants in an oral environment, we introduced novel topographic microstructures onto the surfaces of pure Ti implants via sandblasting, acid etching, and hydrothermal treatment before adding ZnO nanocomposite coatings and TiO2 nanocomposite coatings via magnetron sputtering. We comprehensively investigated the influence of surface topographic morphologies and elemental composition of coatings on the physicochemical properties and antibacterial efficacy of the specimens. Our results indicate that the novel topographic surfaces and magnetron sputtered coatings both exhibit good cytocompatibility. Our results also suggest that coating composition, rather than surface topographic morphology, is the primary factor influencing the antibacterial performance of Ti implants. Therefore, the magnetron sputtering of ZnO and TiO2 coatings onto surfaces can be an effective technique for improving the antibacterial properties of Ti implants for oral applications.

Fine-Tuning the Nanostructured Titanium Oxide Surface for Selective Biological Response.

Cardiovascular diseases are a pre-eminent global cause of mortality in the modern world. Typically, surgical intervention with implantable medical devices such as cardiovascular stents is deployed to reinstate unobstructed blood flow. Unfortunately, existing stent materials frequently induce restenosis and thrombosis, necessitating the development of superior biomaterials. These biomaterials should inhibit platelet adhesion (mitigating stent-induced thrombosis) and smooth muscle cell proliferation (minimizing restenosis) while enhancing endothelial cell proliferation at the same time. To optimize the surface properties of Ti6Al4V medical implants, we investigated two surface treatment procedures: gaseous plasma treatment and hydrothermal treatment. We analyzed these modified surfaces through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water contact angle analysis (WCA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Additionally, we assessed in vitro biological responses, including platelet adhesion and activation, as well as endothelial and smooth muscle cell proliferation. Herein, we report the influence of pre/post oxygen plasma treatment on titanium oxide layer formation via a hydrothermal technique. Our results indicate that alterations in the titanium oxide layer and surface nanotopography significantly influence cell interactions. This work offers promising insights into designing multifunctional biomaterial surfaces that selectively promote specific cell types' proliferation─which is a crucial advancement in next-generation vascular implants.

Synergistic Enhancement of Protein Recruitment and Retention via Implant Surface Microtopography and Superhydrophilicity in a Computational Fluid Dynamics Model

The exact mechanisms by which implant surface properties govern osseointegration are incompletely understood. To gain insights into this process, we examined alterations in protein and blood recruitment around screw implants with different surface topographies and wettability using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Compared with a smooth surface, a microrough implant surface reduced protein infiltration from the outer zone to the implant thread and interface zones by over two-fold. However, the microrough implant surface slowed blood flow in the interface zone by four-fold. As a result, compared with the smooth surface, the microrough surface doubled the protein recruitment/retention index, defined as the mass of proteins present in the area per unit time. Converting implant surfaces from hydrophobic to superhydrophilic increased the mass of protein infiltration 2–3 times and slowed down blood flow by up to two-fold in the implant vicinity for both smooth and microrough surfaces. The protein recruitment/retention index was highest at the implant interface when the implant surface was superhydrophilic and microrough. Thus, this study demonstrates distinct control of the mass and speed of protein and blood flow through implant surface topography, wettability, and their combination, significantly altering the efficiency of protein recruitment. Although microrough surfaces showed both positive and negative impacts on protein recruitment over smooth surfaces, superhydrophilicity was consistently positive regardless of surface topography.

Mechanical, antibacterial and cytotoxic characteristics of nanolayered TiNb–Zr–Ta and nitrogen-doped TiNb–Zr–Ta coatings

Titanium and titanium alloy materials are often made as medical implants. Surface properties of titanium medical implants play decisive roles for antibacterial and biological response and tissue biocompatibility. In this study, cathode arc evaporation (CAE) technology was used to deposit TiNb–Zr–Ta and nitrogen-doped TiNb–Zr–Ta coatings with nanostructures on the Ti–6Al–4V dental abutment screws. The deposited coatings were then oxidized at high temperature to produce different oxides on the surface of the coatings. The mechanical properties, antibacterial properties and biocompatibilities of the coatings were analyzed. The effect of coatings on the abutment screw loosening and removal torque between the abutment screw and the pure titanium implant fixture was studied by removal torque measurement. In addition, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was used for evaluating the antibacterial properties of coatings, and mouse fibroblasts (L929) were used for ISO 10993-5 cytotoxicity analyses to determine whether it had good biocompatibility.Nanolayered structures and multiphases of polycrystalline TiNb–Zr–Ta were obtained by co-deposition of Ta, Zr and TiNb. When small content of N was introduced, the TiNb–Zr–Ta(N) showed a polycrystalline TiNb–Zr–Ta where N atoms entered the metallic lattice at interstitial sites. After oxidation, oxide phases of Ta2O5, TiO2, Nb2O5 and ZrO2 were formed on the surface of TiNb–Zr–Ta and TiNb–Zr–Ta(N). Ta2O5 was obtained on the surface of the coating prior to other oxides such as TiO2, Nb2O5 and ZrO2. The deposited TiNb–Zr–Ta and TiNb–Zr–Ta(N) coatings had high contact angle and exhibited a hydrophobic feature, while the annealed TiNb–Zr–Ta–O and TiNb–Zr–Ta(N)–O showed hydrophilicity. The deposited TiNb–Zr–Ta had similar hardness and Young's modulus values to that of the uncoated Ti–6Al–4V. When N was doped, the TiNb–Zr–Ta(N) had the highest hardness and Young's modulus. The hardness of the annealed TiNb–Zr–Ta(N) coating only decreased slightly due to the small oxide layer of ∼140 nm. Compared with the uncoated Ti–6Al–4V, TiNb–Zr–Ta serial coatings deposited on abutment screws had higher removal torques, which prevented the abutment screw of dental implant from loosening after long-term use. The biocompatibility of TiNb–Zr–Ta serial coatings was similar to that of the uncoated Ti–6Al–4V. In addition, the oxidized TiNb–Zr–Ta and TiNb–Zr–Ta(N) coatings had excellent antibacterial properties. It is speculated that the resulting Ta2O5 of both coatings may inhibit bacterial growth and improve the antibacterial effect. Based on the above advantages, the TiNb–Zr–Ta serial coatings are expected to have the potential to be applied to biomedical implants.

Magnesium implant degradation provides immunomodulatory and proangiogenic effects and attenuates peri-implant fibrosis in soft tissues.

Implants made of magnesium (Mg) are increasingly employed in patients to achieve osteosynthesis while degrading in situ. Since Mg implants and Mg2+ have been suggested to possess anti-inflammatory properties, the clinically observed soft tissue inflammation around Mg implants is enigmatic. Here, using a rat soft tissue model and a 1-28d observation period, we determined the temporo-spatial cell distribution and behavior in relation to sequential changes of pure Mg implant surface properties and Mg2+ release. Compared to nondegradable titanium (Ti) implants, Mg degradation exacerbated initial inflammation. Release of Mg degradation products at the tissue-implant interface, culminating at 3d, actively initiated chemotaxis and upregulated mRNA and protein immunomodulatory markers, particularly inducible nitric oxide synthase and toll-like receptor-4 up to 6d, yet without a cytotoxic effect. Increased vascularization was demonstrated morphologically, preceded by high expression of vascular endothelial growth factor. The transition to appropriate tissue repair coincided with implant surface enrichment of Ca and P and reduced peri-implant Mg2+ concentration. Mg implants revealed a thinner fibrous encapsulation compared with Ti. The detailed understanding of the relationship between Mg material properties and the spatial and time-resolved cellular processes provides a basis for the interpretation of clinical observations and future tailoring of Mg implants.

Wettability transition of superhydrophobic myristic acid/dodecyl mercaptan/Cu@ZIF-8/HA coating modified magnesium alloy driven by visible light for antibacterial and osteogenic applications

Recently, superhydrophobic coating modified magnesium alloys are extensively utilized for anti-corrosion, anti-fouling and anti-bioadhesion fields due to their unique surface characteristics. However, lack of antibacterial and osteogenic properties have restricted the development of medical magnesium alloys for clinical implantation. Here, a facile superhydrophobic wettability transformation strategy is proposed to impart medical magnesium alloys with outstanding corrosion resistance, protection against bacterial infection and promotion of osteogenesis process. The copper (Cu2+)-doped zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) coatings were synthesized upon the surface of HA-modified Mg alloy via solvothermal method and then followed hydrophobic treatment in a mixed ethanol solution of dodecyl mercaptan (DDM) and myristic acid (MA) to obtain superhydrophobic properties. This particular superhydrophobic coating can be irradiated by visible light to make ligand-to-metal charge transfer produce photoelectrons and be captured upon the Cu@ZIF-8 coating surfaces as paramagnetic Zn2+ sites, and then generated reactive oxygen species which can scavenge off the reductive dodecyl mercaptan, thus converting to hydrophilic. This wettability transition allows for the regulation of implant surface properties according to the functional requirements of the implant at different clinical stages. Furthermore, the composite coatings modified Mg alloy after wettability transformation from superhydrophobic to hydrophilic can significantly kill pathogenic bacteria and promote osteoblast attaching behavior.

Influence of Dental Titanium Implants with Different Surface Treatments Using Femtosecond and Nanosecond Lasers on Biofilm Formation.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of different surface treatments (machined; sandblasted, large grit, and acid-etched (SLA); hydrophilic; and hydrophobic) on dental titanium (Ti) implant surface morphology, roughness, and biofilm formation. Four groups of Ti disks were prepared using distinct surface treatments, including femtosecond and nanosecond lasers for hydrophilic and hydrophobic treatments. Surface morphology, wettability, and roughness were assessed. Biofilm formation was evaluated by counting the colonies of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), and Prevotella intermedia (Pi) at 48 and 72 h. Statistical analysis was conducted to compare the groups using the Kruskal-Wallis H test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (α = 0.05). The analysis revealed that the hydrophobic group had the highest surface contact angle and roughness (p < 0.05), whereas the machined group had significantly higher bacterial counts across all biofilms (p < 0.05). At 48 h, the lowest bacterial counts were observed in the SLA group for Aa and the SLA and hydrophobic groups for Pg and Pi. At 72 h, low bacterial counts were observed in the SLA, hydrophilic, and hydrophobic groups. The results indicate that various surface treatments affect implant surface properties, with the hydrophobic surface using femtosecond laser treatment exerting a particularly inhibitory effect on initial biofilm growth (Pg and Pi).
