The flow in and above asymmetric triangular cavities, simulating the scales on the surface of butterfly wings, has been studied in a special recirculating channel, filled with glycerol or water, using flow visualization and laser-Doppler velocimetry. The separation and reattachment points as well as the shape of the recirculation region are determined for different Reynolds numbers and angles of attack.
