Remote sensing evapotranspiration in ensemble-based framework to enhance cascade routing and re-infiltration concept in integrated hydrological model applied to support decision making

Integrated hydrological models (IHMs) help characterize the complexity of surface–groundwater interactions. The cascade routing and re-infiltration (CRR) concept, recently applied to a MODFLOW 6 IHM, improved conceptualization and simulation of overland flow processes. The CRR controls the transfer of rejected infiltration and groundwater exfiltration from upslope areas to adjacent downslope areas where that water can be evaporated, re-infiltrated back to subsurface, or discharged to streams as direct runoff. The partitioning between these three components is controlled by uncertain parameters that must be estimated. Thus, by quantifying and reducing those uncertainties, next to uncertainties of the other model parameters (e.g. hydraulic and storage parameters), the reliability of the CRR is improved and the IHM is better suited for decision support modelling, the two key objectives of this work. To this end, the remotely sensed MODIS-ET product was incorporated into the calibration process for complementing traditional hydraulic head and streamflow observations. A total of approximately 150,000 observations guided the calibration of a 13-year MODFLOW 6 IHM simulation of the Sardon catchment (Spain) with daily stress periods. The model input uncertainty was represented by grid-cell-scale parameterization, yielding approximately 500,000 unknown input parameters to be conditioned. The calibration was carried out through an iterative ensemble smoother. Incorporating the MODIS-ET data improved the CRR implementation, and reduced uncertainties associated with other model parameters. Additionally, it significantly reduced the uncertainty associated with net recharge, a critical flux for water management that cannot be directly measured and rather is commonly estimated by IHM simulations.

Gisser-Sánchez revisited: A model of optimal groundwater withdrawal under irrigation including surface–groundwater interaction

We revisit the classic problem of determining economically optimal groundwater withdrawal rates for irrigation. The novelty compared to previous mathematical analyses is the inclusion of non-linear groundwater-surface water interaction that allows for incorporating the impact of capture, i.e. the fact that all or part of the pumped groundwater comes out of reduced surface water flow or increased recharge. We additionally included the option to internalize environmental externalities (e.g. streamflow depletion) and maximize social welfare rather than farmer’s profit. This analysis results in a fixed optimal groundwater withdrawal rate qopt when withdrawal q remains smaller than some critical withdrawal rate (maximum capture) qcrit and provides depletion trajectories, either under competition or optimal control, if q is larger than qcrit. Based on the relative value of q, qcrit and qopt it also yields four quadrants of distinct withdrawal strategies. Using global hydrogeological and hydroeconomic datasets we map the global occurrence of these four quadrants and provide global estimates of optimal groundwater withdrawal rates and depletion trajectories. For the quadrants with groundwater depletion (q > qcrit) we derive and compare depletion trajectories under competition, optimal control and optimal control including environmental externalities, and assessed globally where the differences between these depletion modes are small, which is known as the Gisser-Sánchez effect. We find that the Gisser-Sánchez effect is globally ubiquitous, but only if environmental externalities are ignored. The inclusion of environmental externalities in optimal control withdrawal result in notably reduced groundwater decline and larger values of social welfare in many of the major depletion areas.

River–Spring Connectivity and Hydrogeochemical Processes in a Karst Water System of Northern China: A Case Study of Jinan Spring Catchment

Frequent surface water–groundwater interactions and prevalent anthropogenic inputs make karst water systems vulnerable to human disturbance. As a typical karst region in North China, the Jinan Spring Catchment has become increasingly threatened due to rapid population growth and urban expansion. In this study, the local river–spring interaction and its interference with the hydrogeochemical evolution of groundwater are evaluated based on water stable isotopes and hydrochemistry. Twenty-two karst groundwater, eleven Quaternary pore water, sixteen spring water, and thirty-two surface water samples were collected during low- and high-flow conditions over the course of a year. The isotopic signatures of four different water types display significant differences, reflecting the recharge–discharge relationship of the karst water system. Mountainous springs feature lighter isotopes, whereas urban springs have significantly heavier isotopes. The result of end-member mixing analysis shows that the surface–groundwater interaction varies spatially and temporally within the spring catchment. Urban springs receive considerable replenishment from the surface water, especially after rainy episodes (up to 50%), while mountainous springs show little hydraulic dependence on surface water leakage (4~6%). Local mineral dissolution (including calcite, dolomite, gypsum, and halite), CO2 dissolution/exsolution, and cation exchange are the main hydrogeochemical processes constraining water chemistry in the spring catchment. The deterioration of water quality can be attributed to anthropogenic influences involving the discharge of domestic effluents, agricultural activities, and irrigation return flow. The findings of this work can improve our understanding of the complex karst water system and serve as a reference for sustainable groundwater management in other karst areas of northern China.

A framework for parameter estimation, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty analysis for holistic hydrologic modeling using SWAT+

Abstract. Parameter sensitivity analysis plays a critical role in efficiently determining main parameters, enhancing the effectiveness of the estimation of parameters and uncertainty quantification in hydrologic modeling. In this paper, we demonstrate an uncertainty and sensitivity analysis technique for the holistic Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT+) model coupled with new gwflow module, spatially distributed, physically based groundwater flow modeling. The main calculated groundwater inflows and outflows include boundary exchange, pumping, saturation excess flow, groundwater–surface water exchange, recharge, groundwater–lake exchange and tile drainage outflow. We present the method for four watersheds located in different areas of the United States for 16 years (2000–2015), emphasizing regions of extensive tile drainage (Winnebago River, Minnesota, Iowa), intensive surface–groundwater interactions (Nanticoke River, Delaware, Maryland), groundwater pumping for irrigation (Cache River, Missouri, Arkansas) and mountain snowmelt (Arkansas Headwaters, Colorado). The main parameters of the coupled SWAT+gwflow model are estimated utilizing the parameter estimation software PEST. The monthly streamflow of holistic SWAT+gwflow is evaluated based on the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency index (NSE), percentage bias (PBIAS), determination coefficient (R2) and Kling–Gupta efficiency coefficient (KGE), whereas groundwater head is evaluated using mean absolute error (MAE). The Morris method is employed to identify the key parameters influencing hydrological fluxes. Furthermore, the iterative ensemble smoother (iES) is utilized as a technique for uncertainty quantification (UQ) and parameter estimation (PE) and to decrease the computational cost owing to the large number of parameters. Depending on the watershed, key identified selected parameters include aquifer specific yield, aquifer hydraulic conductivity, recharge delay, streambed thickness, streambed hydraulic conductivity, area of groundwater inflow to tile, depth of tiles below ground surface, hydraulic conductivity of the drain perimeter, river depth (for groundwater flow processes), runoff curve number (for surface runoff processes), plant uptake compensation factor, soil evaporation compensation factor (for potential and actual evapotranspiration processes), soil available water capacity and percolation coefficient (for soil water processes). The presence of gwflow parameters permits the recognition of all key parameters in the surface and/or subsurface flow processes, with results substantially differing if the base SWAT+ models are utilized.

Understanding the vulnerability of surface–groundwater interactions to climate change: insights from a Bavarian Forest headwater catchment

Headwaters play a crucial role in maintaining forest biodiversity by providing unique habitats and are important for the regulation of water temperature and oxygen levels for downstream river networks. Approximately 90% of the total length of streams globally originate from headwaters and these systems are discussed to be especially vulnerable to impacts of climate change. This study uses an integrated hydrological model (HydroGeoSphere) in combination with 23 downscaled ensemble members from representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5 to examine how climate change affects water availability in a headwater catchment under baseflow conditions. The simulations consistently predict increasing water deficits in summer and autumn for both the near (2021–2050) and far future (2071–2099). Annual mean water deficits were estimated to be 4 to 7 times higher than historical levels. This is mainly due to a projected reduction in precipitation inputs of up to – 22%, while AET rates remain similar to those observed during the historical reference period (1992–2018). The declining groundwater storage reserves within the catchment are expected to result in a significant decline in surface water availability during summer and autumn, with a reduction in mean annual stream discharge by up to 34% compared to the reference period. Due to declining groundwater levels, upstream reaches are predicted to become intermittent in summer leading to a reduction of the total stream flow length by up to 200 m. Findings from this study will enhance our understanding of future water availability in headwater systems and may aid in the development of effective management strategies for mitigating local impacts of climate change and preserving these vulnerable ecosystems.

Identification of surface water - groundwater nitrate governing factors in Jianghuai hilly area based on coupled SWAT-MODFLOW-RT3D modeling approach

A comprehensive understanding of the key controlling factors on NO3-N spatiotemporal distribution in surface and groundwater is of great significance to nitrogen pollution control and water resources management in watershed. Hence, the coupled SWAT-MODFLOW-RT3D model was employed to simulate nitrate (NO3−) fate and transport in Huashan watershed system. The model was calibrated using a combination of stream discharge, groundwater levels, NO3-N in-stream loading and groundwater NO3-N concentrations. The simulation revealed the significant spatiotemporal variations in surface water-groundwater nitrate interactions. The annual average percolation of NO3− from rivers to groundwater was 171.5 kg/km2 and the annual average discharge NO3− content from groundwater into rivers was 451.9 kg/km2 over the simulation period. The highest percolation of NO3− from rivers to groundwater occurred in April and the highest discharge NO3− content from groundwater into rivers occurred in July. Grassland and agriculture land contributed more nitrate contents in river water and groundwater compared to bare land and forest in the study area and the water exchange was the primary driving force for nitrate interactions in the surface water-groundwater system. Sensitivity analysis indicated that river runoff and groundwater levels were most influenced by the SCS runoff curve number f (CN2) and aquifer hydraulic conductivity (K), which, in turn, significantly affected nitrate transport. Regarding water quality parameters, the denitrification exponential rate coefficient (CDN) had the most pronounced impact on NO3-N in-stream loading and groundwater NO3-N concentrations. This study underscores the central role of surface-groundwater (SW-GW) interactions in watershed-scale nitrate research and suggests that parameters with higher sensitivity should be prioritized in analogous watershed modeling.

Surface-groundwater interactions in hard rock, water-limited environments, simulated at very fine scale using long time-series observations and hydrotope-modeling concept

Hard rock systems are typically characterized by undulated landscapes, short flow path, dense drainage network, and low aquifer storage. If located in water-limited environments (WLE), then typically have variable rainfall characteristics, frequent floods and droughts, and savannah type of vegetation capable to uptake groundwater. In such environments, surface–groundwater interactions are of primary importance. In this study, surface–groundwater interactions are analyzed focusing on spatiotemporal net recharge dependence on hydrotopes, where a hydrotope is conceptualized as spatial unit (or object), which at a given scale of assessment can be assumed as internally homogeneous (e.g. tree canopy or rock outcrop), but hydro(geo)logically different than the adjacent area. The study was carried out in the small (7.6 ha) Trabadillo study area (TSA) in Spain, representative for hard rocks of WLE, using 3D-GSFLOW integrated hydrological model (IHM) at very fine grid (5x5m), extracted from coarser grid (100x100m) of Sardon 3D-GSFLOW model (Hassan et al., 2014, Journal of Hydrology 517, 390–410). The IHM was calibrated using: (i) 20-year head observation; (ii) 8-year soil moisture observations at 4 profiles, each at different hydrotope and each at 4 different depths; and (iii) MODIS satellite earth observation of evapotranspiration. Despite applying spatially uniform rainfall as forcing, surface–groundwater interactions were highly spatially variable, primarily, because of hydrotope-differences in rainfall interception loss and secondarily, because of differences in transpiration, in subsurface evaporation and in hydrological properties of subsurface. The high temporal variability of rainfall, ranging yearly from 310 to 925 mm, resulted in high temporal variability of all water fluxes, including groundwater fluxes; e.g. gross recharge (Rg) varied annually from 2 to 445 mm, net recharge (Rn), from −50 mm to + 89 mm, while the 20-year mean Rn was close to zero, because Rg was counterbalanced by groundwater exfiltration and less by groundwater evapotranspiration. The high temporal variability of groundwater fluxes and many dry years with largely negative Rn, in combination with low aquifer storage, emphasized TSA dependence on rainfall and its vulnerability to droughts. The hydrotope modeling concept applied at the very fine scale, emphasized also large Rn dependence on land cover type, especially on density and species composition of trees, invisible at coarser scale modeling. As such, the proposed hydrotope modelling approach can be applied as a tool to test whether in a given environment planting (or cutting) trees will result in increase or decrease of water resources.

Improved Representation of Groundwater–Surface Water Interactions Using SWAT+gwflow and Modifications to the gwflow Module

Recent water availability and scarcity problems have highlighted the importance of surface–groundwater interactions. Thus, groundwater models are coupled with surface water models. However, this solution is complex, needing code modifications and long computation times. Recently, a new groundwater module (gwflow) was developed directly inside the SWAT code to tackle these issues. This research assesses gwflow’s capabilities in representing surface–groundwater system interactions in the Dijle catchment (892.54 km2), a groundwater-driven watershed in Belgium. Additional developments were made in SWAT+gwflow to represent the interaction between the groundwater and soil (gwsoil). The model was calibrated for monthly mean streamflow at the catchment outlet (1983 to 1996) and validated for two periods (validation 1: 1975 to 1982 and validation 2: 1997 to 2002). It was found that the SWAT+gwflow model is better at representing the total flow (NSE of 0.6) than the standalone SWAT+ (NSE of 0.4). This was confirmed during two validation periods where the standalone model scored unsatisfactory monthly NSE (0.6 and 0.1), while the new model’s NSE was 0.7 and 0.5. Additionally, the SWAT+gwflow model simulations better depict the groundwater via baseflow and attain proper water balance values. Thus, in a highly groundwater-driven catchment, the simplified representation of groundwater systems by the standalone SWAT+ model has pitfalls. In addition, the modification made to the gwflow module (gwsoil) improved the model’s performance, which, without such adjustment, overestimates the streamflow via saturation excess flow. When including the gwsoil mechanism, thereby providing a more accurate representation of water storage and movement, groundwater is transferred to the soil profile, increasing the overall soil water content and thereby increasing lateral flow. This novel modification can also have implications for other distributed hydrological models to consider such exchanges in their modeling scheme.

Understanding global groundwater-climate interactions

Global warming is emerging as an important predictor of water availability and future water supplies across the world through inducing the frequency and severity in hydrological extremes. These extremes (e.g., drought) have potential impacts on groundwater, environmental flows, as well as increase social inequalities (limited access to water by the poor), among a range of other issues. Understanding the influence of global climate on groundwater systems is thus critical to help reshape global water markets through policies underpinned by the knowledge of climatic processes driving the water cycle and freshwater supply. The main aim of this study is to improve understanding of the influence of climate variability on global groundwater using statistical methods (e.g., multi-linear regression and wavelet analyses). The response of groundwater to climate variability are assessed and the feasibility of identifying climatic hotspots of groundwater-climate interactions are explored (2003−2017). Generally, climate variability plays a major role in the distribution of groundwater recharge, evidenced in the groundwater-rainfall relationship (r ranging from 0.6 to 0.8 with lags of 1–5 months) in several regions (Amazon and Congo basins, West Africa, and south Asia). Some of the areas where no relationship exists coincide with major regional aquifer systems (e.g., Nubian sand stone in north Africa) in arid domains with fossil groundwater. Our results also show that groundwater fluxes across the world are driven by global climate teleconnections. Notable among these climate teleconnections are PDO, ENSO, CAR, and Nino 4 with PDO showing the strongest relationship (r= 0.80) with groundwater in some hotspots (e.g. in South America). The explicit role of the Pacific ocean in regulating groundwater fluxes provides an opportunity to improve the prediction of climate change impact on global freshwater systems. As opposed to remarkably large productive hydrological systems (Amazon and Congo basins), in typically arid domains, groundwater could be restricted during prolonged drought, constraining the persistence of surface water in the maintenance of a healthy surface-groundwater interactions.

How best to incorporate conjunctive water management into international water law: legal amendment, instrument coupling, or new protocol adoption?

International water conventions—e.g., the 1997 United Nations Convention on the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses—include positive but insufficient focus on groundwater and its interaction with surface water. As such, a growing body of literature has proposed modifications to existing frameworks to enable consideration to surface and groundwater and their interactions. While this literature places considerable focus on coupling and amending existing legal frameworks, elaboration and evaluation of a new protocol on conjunctive water management comprises a key gap. To fill this gap, this paper seeks to answer the following question: does formulation and adoption of a new “conjunctive” protocol provide more value than existing proposals centered around modifications to existing law? This paper seeks to compare benefits associated with current proposals to strengthen the international legal framework for management of surface–groundwater interaction, vis-a-vis adoption of a new protocol on conjunctive management of transboundary freshwaters. To do so, the authors use doctrinal legal methods to analyze the existing main instruments globally assessing the degree to which they consider key interlinkages between surface water and groundwater. Then, the paper examines the concept of conjunctive water management and deduces tenets that should be pursued in shared waters to achieve this objective. To identify the preferred option to support conjunctive water management in international water law, the paper explores the degree to which existing proposals vs a new protocol enable an embrace of these tenets of conjunctive water management. The paper finds that while a new protocol may add greater value in advancing conjunctive water management, multiple options can and should be concurrently pursued. In particular, the authors argue that new protocols to the existing treaties must be adopted in combination with the amendment of the Draft Articles on the Law of Transboundary Aquifers. Benefits of doing so include more effective management of transboundary freshwater resources that are interconnected hydrologically, a less fragmented and more consistent international water regime, and ultimately more benefits accruing to the populations and environmental goods dependent on shared water resources.

Exploring Climate-Driven agricultural water shortages in a Snow-Fed basin using a water allocation model and Machine learning

Water allocation models (WAM) can capture complex feedbacks between water infrastructure, water supply, water demand, and water rights structure. They are an important tool for water managers to reduce conflict and aid in future water resource planning. Future streamflow reductions and shifts in timing are anticipated in snow-dominated watersheds of the western United States due to projected reductions in snow water storage. These basins tend to be water-limited and rely on groundwater to support agricultural demand. Water managers in the snow-fed, agricultural Walker River Basin (WRB) in California and Nevada use a dynamically coupled WAM and physically based groundwater flow model as a decision support tool. Large computation time is required to simulate groundwater dynamics, limiting the number of model scenarios that can feasibly be run to test alternative management scenarios under climate change. Machine learning (ML) techniques have been used to capture complex nonlinear hydrologic dynamics in other contexts, but to our knowledge there have not been efforts to use ML to increase computational efficiency in modeling groundwater responses to agricultural water use. We use extreme gradient boosting to replace the groundwater sub-model for the WRB decision support tool, resulting in accurate estimates of reservoir storage (monthly error almost always < 5% of reservoir capacity), streamflow (total outflow errors from −3% to 20% depending on scenario) and agricultural water shortages (-12% to 18% error in total shortage depending on scenario). For comparison, we found that omitting groundwater modeling from the WAM results in a larger overprediction of outflows (2 to 58%) and underprediction in agricultural water shortages (0 to 41%) across a range of scenarios. We use this validated ML method to explore the sensitivity of agricultural water availability to a range of streamflow volumes and streamflow timings. Results indicate that agricultural water shortages are more sensitive to annual streamflow volume in comparison to shifts in streamflow timing. Our model shows that reservoirs can buffer the impact of altered flow timing on agricultural production, except under extreme conditions in which all precipitation falls as rain (no snow storage) and streamflow peaks in the winter. Future work will explore these thresholds in more detail. While the results here are site-specific, the methodology for coupling a WAM with a ML representation of surface–groundwater interactions can be applied to a wide variety of water resource modeling applications. These results also provide a stark example of the importance of snowpack storage and groundwater management to western US water infrastructure.

Assessing surface-groundwater interactions for sustaining spring wetlands of the Great Artesian Basin, Australia

The Great Artesian Basin (GAB) is one of the world’s largest actively recharging aquifers. Groundwater discharges from the GAB sustain numerous spring wetlands, which have great ecological, scientific, and socio-economic significance. However, groundwater extraction and variation over time have had an impact on the quantity and area of spring wetlands with a 38% decline in extent since 1900. A major barrier to understanding variability in surface–groundwater interactions in spring wetlands of the GAB is the lack of observational data across critical spatial and temporal scales. Satellite observations have the ability to overcome this barrier and allow the evaluation of spring wetland responses to groundwater storage (GWS) variation. We investigated how GWS, and its associated drivers such as evapotranspiration (ET), soil moisture storage (SMS), and rainfall, in the GAB, influence the extent of surface water at five spring supergroups (Eulo, Barcaldine, Flinders, Springsure, and Springvale). We used satellite observations (2002–2017) to assess ET, SMS, rainfall, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the modified normalized difference water index (mNDWI) for observing surface–groundwater interactions. NDVI responded positively to the GWS variation over the GAB and varies from sub-basin to sub- basin, with higher correlations in the Carpentaria sub-basin and some parts of Central and Western Eromanga. GWS variations was correlated with ET, SMS, rainfall, NDVI, mNDWI and surface water level (SWL). After a strong La Niña began in 2010, we uncovered relatively higher linear relationships between different components (ET, SMS, rainfall, NDVI, mNDWI, and SWL) and GWS variation (R2 > 0.50) than before the La Niña (R2 < 0.50), with the Flinders spring supergroup being the exception. NDVI and SMS are found to be the most significant predictor variables among ET, rainfall, SWL, and mNDWI components to influence GWS. This study provides improved understanding of surface-ground water interaction in spring wetlands and the influence of different hydrological components on variation in spring wetland extent in the GAB region.

Modelación multi-escala para la comprensión de los sistemas de flujo en un acuífero multicapa, Urabá-Colombia

Numerical modelling is a valuable tool which allows the characterisation of groundwater flow behaviour, its interactions, and the representation of different flow systems that occur in an aquifer. A regional-scale model requires general information to describe the flow trends. In contrast, local and intermediate-scale models require a more detailed knowledge of the flow boundaries, and more field information. In order to understand the groundwater flow in the aquifer system of the Eje Bananero del Urabá Antioqueño-Colombia, a multi-scale numerical model was implemented using MODFLOW®. This was performed following modelling protocols on three spatial scales in which the regional model provided the boundary conditions for the intermediate pattern, and the intermediate pattern for the local model. Finally, we represented some details that relate local and intermediate flows to regional flows, in which surface-groundwater interactions involving both shallow and deep ascending flows became evident. The results obtained in this work show the potential of multi-scale modelling as a tool to recognise and understand the groundwater flows in a layered aquifer system, which provide grounds for decision-making and proper management of hydrogeological systems.

Geoenvironmental approach to investigate surface and groundwater pollution-related problems in water-sensitive regions.

The desert environment is a clean, dynamic system due to its remoteness from human interventions. Yet, sometimes it is approached by anthropogenic activities that change its balanced ecosystem. The present study states that the non-planned construction of wastewater plants has affected the environment and led to water resource deterioration. The presented approach is based on the integration of hydrogeologic data together with remote sensing and GIS applications as well as statistical, chemical, biochemical, and bacteriological analyses of water samples. The groundwater showed high salinity values (up to 13,236mg/l) where it is extracted from two coastal aquifers; the Middle Miocene aquifer represents the main one, while the Pleistocene aquifer is of limited use. The obtained results reveal the existence of pollution indicators in both stored rainwater and groundwater where the colony bacteria, NO3, chemical and biological oxygen demands, and total organic carbon exceed the permissible limits. The satellite images acquired between 2003 and 2021 demonstrated a land use change through the construction of a wastewater plant with two forests that led to the spreading of the partially treated water over the Marmarica Plateau. The photogeological lineaments are extracted where the plateau is affected by many faults (NE-SW, NW-SE, and E-W) that facilitate surface-groundwater interaction. The results indicate that the studied groundwater becomes vulnerable to the existing pollution sources, with the possibility of being affected by climate change and saltwater intrusion. Therefore, this integrated approach is presented to assess the current environmental problems and suggests a strategy to mitigate the pollution hazards.

Large-scale study on groundwater dissolved organic matter reveals a strong heterogeneity and a complex microbial footprint

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in terrestrial groundwater is generally low in concentration compared to inland surface waters. However, the overall amount of groundwater DOM is huge, as there is 100 times more fresh groundwater than fresh surface water. To date, research on groundwater DOM has merely focused on specific threats to humans such as e.g. DOM and heavy metal complexations and DOM from hydrocarbon contamination. A comprehensive, large-scale study of groundwater is still missing. Here, we examine DOM properties in a large-scale approach with regards to surface characteristics such as land use and altitude, aquifer characteristics as well as microbial features. We analyzed 1600 water samples from 100 groundwater bodies all over Austria with regards to their DOM quantity, quality and bacterial abundance (BA). DOM quality was evaluated with self-organizing maps on fluorescence excitation-emission-matrices (EEMs) combined with Ward clustering and subsequent parallel factor analysis to describe DOM properties of each cluster. We evaluated how these clusters differed among each other, based on DOC and nitrate concentrations, BA and selected environmental characteristics. Our results show that fluorescence components in groundwater resemble components found in other groundwater studies, in studies from forest streams, the dark ocean, agricultural catchments and wastewater treatment plants. The latter fluorescence components were associated with a cluster that is characterized by agricultural and urban land use, as well as by high nitrate concentrations. Clusters with an increased abundance of high-molecular weight and humic components, commonly associated with vascular plant and soil origin, correlated with a higher bacterial abundance. This observation provides evidence that elevated numbers of suspended bacteria mainly originate from the surface. Our study shows that DOM fluorescence can be a fast monitoring tool to identify aquifers under anthropogenic stress and delineate sensitive recharge areas with high surface-groundwater interaction.

The Control of Plant and Soil Hydraulics on the Interannual Variability of Plant Carbon Uptake Over the Central US

AbstractThe interannual variability (IAV) of gross primary productivity (GPP) reflects the sensitivity of GPP to climate variations and contributes substantially to the variations and long‐term trend of the atmospheric CO2 growth rate. Analyses of three observation‐based GPP products indicate that their IAVs are consistently correlated to terrestrial water storage anomaly over the central US, where episodic droughts occur. A land surface model explicitly representing plant hydraulics and groundwater capillary rise with an adequate soil hydraulics well captures the observed GPP IAV. Our sensitivity experiments indicate that, without representations of plant hydraulics and groundwater capillary rise or using an alternative soil hydraulics, the land model substantially overestimates the GPP IAV and the GPP sensitivity to water in the central US. This study strongly suggests the use of the van Genuchten water retention model to replace the most commonly used Brooks–Corey model, which generally produces too strong matric suction of soil water especially in dry conditions, in land surface modeling. This study highlights the importance of plant and soil hydraulics and surface–groundwater interactions to Earth system modeling for projections of future climates that may experience more intense and frequent droughts.

Hydrogeochemistry and Isotope Hydrology of Surface Water and Groundwater in the Mountain Watersheds of Daqing River, North China

Surface water and groundwater interaction variations in time and space are crucial for effective water management, especially in low-precipitation regions. To comprehensively determine the hydrochemical characteristics and interaction processes of surface water and groundwater and to investigate the decreasing causes of water resources in semi-arid mountainous watersheds under changing environments, intensive field surveys were conducted in the Daqing River watershed, a tributary of the Haihe River basin in northern China, during two different times of the year: after the rainy season (September 2018) and before the rainy season (July 2019). Sixty surface water and groundwater samples were collected along the mountainous watershed. Using a combination method of hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope tracing and hydrochemical analysis, the hydrogen and oxygen isotopes and hydrochemical characteristics of surface water and groundwater in the mountainous watershed of the Daqing River were analyzed. Furthermore, the effect of elevation (altitude) on isotopes was discussed, and the correlation between hydrogen and oxygen isotope composition and hydrochemical characteristics was obtained. The results were processed using endmember mixing analysis to determine the amount of contribution of the surface water and groundwater interaction processes. The results show that the hydrochemical characteristics are relatively stable in the mountainous watersheds of the Daqing River, and the surface water and groundwater are mainly of the HCO3-Ca type. The slope of the local meteoric water line is smaller than the slope of the global meteoric water line, and the δD and δ18O in surface water and groundwater show a good linear relationship both before and after the rainy season. There is a decreasing trend of the value of δ18O in surface water samples with decreasing altitude, but a decreasing trend of the value of δ18O in groundwater samples is not obvious. The evaporation intensity of surface water is stronger after the rainy season than before the rainy season, and the connection between the surface water and the groundwater is stronger before the rainy season. Influenced by topographic conditions and other factors, the exchange of surface water and groundwater is frequent, and there is a large difference in the exchange ratio before and after the rainy season. The exchange ratio can be more than 50% after the rainy season. Thus, the reasons for decreasing water resources in the mountains can be implied to be due to the increasing hydraulic gradient between the mountains and the piedmont plains, and the water resources are discharged more in the form of groundwater to the downstream. The conclusions help to enhance the understanding of the water cycle in the mountainous watershed and can provide some theoretical basis for the sustainable development and utilization of water resources in the Haihe River basin and the regional water ecology of the Xiong’an New Area.

Hydrogeomorphic advancements in river science for water security in India

Effective management of rivers and the maintenance of the integrity of linked biophysical systems require multidisciplinary approaches. Thus, River Science is a relatively new arena of scientific inquiry that focuses on problems of sustainable management of river systems and it actively integrates multiple scales and various concepts. This paper presents a review of new developments in hydrogeomorphic processes understanding, which are critical to assess water security for Indian river systems.Indian rivers are under the influence of a diverse interplay of climatic, geomorphic, tectonic, and anthropogenic forces, and are broadly classified in terms of Himalayan and Peninsular rivers, which can be further subdivided into 6 major types. The Himalayan rivers have received greater attention in comparison to rivers in peninsular India. Within the backdrop of changing climate, an improved understanding of the interrelationships between hydrological, morphological and ecological processes is the key to quantifying water security for Indian rivers in the near future. Geomorphic threshold, hydrological and sediment connectivity, Groundwater-Surfacewater (GW-SW) interaction and Environmental-flow (E-flow) assessment are the essential elements to understand the hydrology-morphological-ecological processes. Such studies have been initiated in Indian river systems, however, these are still limited in number. Stream power distribution based approaches are frequently employed to understand hydrological controls on morphological processes and form in regulated and unregulated rivers. As a majority of the Himalayan rivers are hydrologically and morphologically disconnected due to large dams or barrages, the result is a discontinuum of channel processes. Peninsular rivers are dominantly bedrock and highly regulated river systems, which show significant short- to long-term flow variability and have tributaries which are not perennial. Disconnectivity due to extensive flow regulation and water withdrawals impose great stress on the flow processes and sediment transport, and result in the progressive decline in channel morphology, habitat, and ecosystem flow needs. A critical research question in highly regulated river systems is regarding how the flow regime at the reach scale and the associated hydrogeomorphic variability can be systematically characterized. Identification of geomorphic thresholds at different scales and quantification of (a) hydrological and sediment connectivity in river systems, (b) surface–groundwater interaction, and (c) E-flow assessment for different reaches in each river basin are the major gaps in River Science studies specific to Indian river systems. Especially, E-flow assessment for different river basins using a holistic approach must be the leading area of River Science research to aid management and policy making with the goal of enhancing water security. Relatively less studied peninsular rivers need more quantitative process-based hydrogeomorphic studies and their application for E-flow assessment.

Catastrophic Floods in Large River Basins: Surface Water and Groundwater Interaction under Dynamic Complex Natural Processes–Forecasting and Presentation of Flood Consequences

A unique approach has been developed for explaining and forecasting the processes of flood and/or mudflow (debris) formation and their spread along riverbeds in mountainous areas, caused by flash increases in the water masses involved (considerably increasing in their expected level because of precipitation intensity) due to groundwater contributions. Three-dimensional crack-nets within the confines of unified rivershed basins in mountain massifs are a natural transportation system (as determined by some dynamic external stress factors) for groundwater, owing to hydrostatic/hydrodynamic pressure distribution, varied due to different reasons (e.g., earthquakes). This process reveals a wave nature characterized by signs of obvious self-organization, and can be described via the soliton model in nonlinear hydrodynamics on the surface propagation after a local exit of groundwater as the trigger type. This approach (and related concepts) might result in a more reliable forecasting and early warning system in case of natural water hazards/disasters, taking into account a groundwater-dominant role in some cases.
