Column-based programmable damper for impact protection and vibration suppression of jacket structures

Steel jacket structures subjected to environmental impacts exhibit severe dynamic responses, potentially causing local fatigue failure, plastic damage, and even catastrophic collapse. Therefore, a structure with adjustable stiffness and large damping is ideal for coping with complex environmental loads and dissipating kinetic energy. A novel programmable damper was designed by connecting N-layer coupling elements composed of a linear spring, wire ropes, and an asymmetric column. Analytical models for the elastic buckling behavior of the damper were derived and mutually verified with finite element analysis (FEA). Based on the analytical models, the dependence of the mechanical responses of the damper on the number of elements and the spring stiffness was investigated for design guidance. The results indicate that the N-layer damper has 2N different stiffnesses, and the total dissipation capacity increases by approximately 2.6N times compared with a single asymmetric column. For potential applications, the dynamic decay responses of representative jacket structures assembled with the damper were simulated using the FE software ABAQUS combined with user-defined-material (UMAT) code, which demonstrated that the programmable damper is an advanced device that simultaneously achieves adjustable stiffness and significant damping.

Advances in suppression of structural vibration and sound radiation by flexural wave manipulation

The newly generated artificial structures, including phononic crystals, elastic metamaterials, acoustic black holes (ABHs) and elastic metasurfaces, can abnormally control wave propagations. In this paper, focusing on plate structures and from the perspective of the suppression of vibration and especially sound radiation by manipulating flexural waves, we give a thorough review of the advances of above-mentioned artificial structures, involving their extraordinary characteristics, corresponding mechanisms of vibration and sound radiation suppression, design methods of phase-gradient elastic metasurfaces, and some representative works on suppressing vibration and sound radiation of plates by flexural wave manipulations. Additionally, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of these artificial structures in vibration and sound radiation suppression. Finally, we look forward to the prospects on vibration and sound radiation suppression of plates based on wave manipulations. This paper will provide a timely and practical assistance to academic and technical researchers in the field of vibration and noise reduction.

A meta-plate with radial rainbow reflection effect for broadband suppression of vibration and sound radiation

The suppression of vibration and sound radiation of thin plates has always been a concern in engineering fields such as aerospace, transportation, etc. The rainbow effect refers to that the waves with different frequencies can be stopped in different positions, where the wave energy is also enhanced, as the result of the spatial slowing-down of wave velocities. This effect exhibits great potential in suppressing structural vibration and sound radiation, but corresponding studies have not been reported yet. In this paper, a meta-plate composed of ring-type unit-cells with gradient heights is proposed to generate the radial rainbow reflection effect. Upon analyzing the dispersion relationship of unit-cells and revealing the rainbow reflection mechanism, the broadband vibration and sound radiation performances of a square meta-plate with free boundaries are studied. Numerical and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed meta-plate can suppress the vibration and sound radiation in broadband only with the extreme-low structural inherent loss. The wavenumber spectra of vibration velocity and supersonic intensity at typical frequencies including local and global resonant ones are analyzed to reveal the suppression mechanism of sound radiation, which is the vibration redistribution and systematic vibration reduction resulting from the rainbow reflection effect. Our design enhances the stiffness of plate structures and requires no additional damping, providing a novel approach for structural vibration and sound radiation suppression.

Vibration control of piezoelectric beams with active constrained layer damping treatment using LADRC algorithm

Active constrained layer damping (ACLD) treatment has become an important smart structure for vibration suppression due to its ability to achieve enhanced damping effects through real-time control. The control algorithm is a critical factor that determines the damping performance of the ACLD treatment. In this work, we utilize the linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) algorithm for the first time in the vibration suppression of beams with the ACLD treatment by compensating for the disturbance. To optimize vibration suppression, we also propose an efficient parameter tuning approach by analyzing the effects of controller bandwidth, control gain, and observer bandwidth on vibration suppression performance. Firstly, the dynamic model of elastic beams with the ACLD treatment is established and the LADRC algorithm is designed. Subsequently, the accuracy of the model is verified by comparing it with open literature and experiments. Then, the influences of the control parameters and different positions of the ACLD treatment on the vibration suppression performance are studied. Finally, the vibration suppression effects of LADRC and traditional PID algorithms are compared. The results indicate that the vibration suppression performance of the ACLD treatment is better than that of the passive constrained layer damping (PCLD) treatment. Setting the controller bandwidth to a small value and then adjusting other control parameters can effectively reduce the difficulty of parameter tuning while achieving superior vibration suppression performance. Appropriately increasing the observer bandwidth or reducing the control gain is beneficial for enhancing the suppression efficiency. The parameter tuning approach in this study provides vital guidance for the application of the LADRC algorithm in structural vibration suppression.

Vibration Suppression of Piecewise-Linear Stiffness Nes System Under Random Excitation

Nonlinear energy sinks (NESs) are critically important for structural vibration suppression. They can absorb vibrational energy across a broad frequency spectrum, possess strong robustness, and have a relatively small mass. This study addresses the vibration suppression in a piecewise linear stiffness NES system under random excitation. Initially, a theoretical model of the piecewise linear stiffness NES system is developed. The piecewise linear stiffness function is approximated using Legendre polynomial approximation. Following this, the steady-state Fokker–Planck–Kolmogorov (FPK) equation of the system is formulated via the Generalized Harmonic Function Method. The FPK equation is solved using the fourth-order central difference method, and the effectiveness of this approach is validated by comparing the FDM results with numerical simulations. Lastly, the influence of varying system parameters on the stability of the piecewise linear stiffness NES system is analyzed.

Vibration Control of Reinjection Pump Room Pipeline System Based on Dynamic Characteristic Analysis

The reinjection pump room plays a crucial role in industries such as petroleum and chemical engineering. Its main responsibility is to safely and effectively inject treated wastewater, exhaust gas, or other fluid substances into the formation, aiming to achieve resource recycling and environmental protection. However, the pipeline system of the reinjection pump room usually has complex spatial distribution, long span, and multi-point elastic support characteristics, which may cause structural vibration during operation, and have adverse effects on the stable operation, safety, and surrounding environment of the equipment. Therefore, in the pipeline design stage, it is crucial to conduct in-depth vibration analysis of complex pipeline systems to ensure that harmful resonance phenomena do not occur in the pipeline under working conditions. Given the potential impact of pipeline system vibration on equipment performance and surrounding environment, effective suppression of pipeline system structural vibration is of great practical significance. This article focuses on the vibration control strategy of the reinjection pump room pipeline system based on dynamic characteristic analysis. By conducting in-depth research on the dynamic characteristics of pipeline systems, including vibration frequency, modal analysis, and vibration transmission paths, the aim is to propose a set of targeted vibration control measures.

Quasi-periodic sonic black hole with low-frequency acoustic and elastic bandgaps

Metamaterials with the capability to control wave propagation in fluid or solid mediums have attracted plenty of fundamental scientific and engineering research in recent decades. This paper proposes a novel metamaterial, named Quasi-periodic sonic black hole (Q-SBH), to achieve both acoustic bandgap and elastic bandgap. The Q-SHB consists of two functional units: outer soft shells and inner stiff rings. The stiff rings with decaying inner radii are connected by soft shells, and the distances between rings take linear variation. The Q-SBH reserves the slow-sound effect of sonic black hole and the non-uniformly distributed rings serve as mistuning vibration absorbers. On the basis of these characteristics, broadband low-frequency acoustic and elastic bandgaps are generated simultaneously. We demonstrate the attenuation performance of the Q-SBH by theoretical, numerical and experimental methods. Parametric analysis and multi-objective optimization of the structure are carried out. The results demonstrate the great potential of the proposed Q-SBH in a broad range of physical fields requiring both air-borne noise reduction and structural vibration suppression.

A Ball-Contacting Dynamic Vibration Absorber with Adjustable Stiffness and Nonlinear Characteristics

Structural vibration has always been a major concern in the engineering field. A dynamic vibration absorber in the form of contacts with adjustable stiffness (CDVA) offers effective vibration suppression and can improve conventional dynamic vibration absorbers with high sensitivity to frequency deviation and difficulty in adjusting the frequency. In this research, first, based on the theoretical model of the contact between a rubber ball and an inner cone, the feasibility of changing the axial contact state to change the structure’s natural frequency was verified using an ANSYS simulation. A theoretical model of the static contact stiffness between the ball and the inner cone was constructed using Hertzian contact theory and Hooke’s law, and a theoretical model of the cubic nonlinear elastic restoring force was used to characterize the stiffness properties of the rubber ball during compressive rebound. The steady-state frequency response equations of the main vibration structure were derived using the averaging method in conjunction with the two-degree-of-freedom dynamics model, and the stability of the solutions to the frequency response equations was obtained in conjunction with the stability determination criterion. Then, the impact of the CDVA’s design parameters on the nonlinear dynamic response of the primary vibration structure was simulated and analyzed. The resulting findings can serve as guidance for designing dynamic vibration absorber parameters. Based on the principles of ball-inner cone contact, a dynamic vibration absorber structure was proposed. A design test was conducted to verify the correctness of the contact stiffness model, and an experimental study was carried out to investigate the law of change in the dynamic stiffness and damping of the principle structure of CDVA under dynamic excitation conditions. Finally, the vibration test platform of the solidly supported beam structure was constructed, and vibration suppression tests of the CDVA in different compression states were conducted to investigate the tunability and feasibility of CDVA vibration suppression. The results showed that the dynamic vibration absorber had good vibration absorption characteristics and could be used for single-mode vibration suppression of multimodal main structures.

Controllable flexural wave in laminated metabeam with embedded multiple resonators

Acoustic metamaterials and bandgap engineering have been research areas that have drawn intensive and extensive research attention in recent years. The exploration of low-frequency bandgaps as well as the corresponding bandgap modulation has been a subject of much concern by numerous research scholars and engineers. In this paper, a new laminated beam metastructure which uses piezoelectric springs to connect local resonators to the laminated beam is proposed. Considering the intrinsic relationship of materials and loads due to resonator system, the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is employed to derive the governing equation of the system, and the band structure is solved by the spectral element method. Subsequently, we solve and analyze the effects of external excitation sources including electric and magnetic fields on the bandgap, and also investigate the influence resonator number and mass. Finally, the modulation effect of piezoelectric spring stiffness on the bandgap is analyzed. The result of this paper provides a sound theoretical guide for the application and control of multi-frequency domain bandgaps. It also serves new ideas for vibration isolation and suppression of metabeam structures in real-life engineering applications.

Linear active disturbance rejection control algorithm for active vibration control of piezo-actuated beams: Theoretical and experimental studies

The active vibration control (AVC) of lightweight thin-walled structures on spacecraft has been a proven solution for vibration suppression. In this study, a linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) algorithm is presented for vibration suppression of piezo-actuated beams. Firstly, the governing equation of a piezo-actuated beam is obtained by using the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory and the Lagrange equation. The LADRC algorithm is designed for the piezo-actuated beam based on the governing equation. Then, the accuracy of the piezo-actuated beam model is confirmed by comparison with ANSYS and experiments. Finally, numerical simulations and experiments are carried out on the active vibration suppression of the piezo-actuated beam under the fixed harmonic excitation, variable harmonic excitation, and fixed harmonic excitation with measuring noise, respectively. The results show that the LADRC algorithm has an excellent control effect on structural vibration suppression, strong adaptability to various external excitations, and anti-noise ability.

Delayed resonator for complete vibration suppression of primary structures with nonlinear stiffness

Delayed resonator (DR) is an active vibration absorber and is known for its complete vibration suppression capability by manipulating the feedback loop delay. This work aims to extend the DR concept from the widely considered linear applications to suppress vibrations on primary structures with nonlinear stiffness, based on the motivation that absolute linearity does not exist and nonlinearity is inherent in many structures to be protected. The nonlinearity stems from the commonly seen nonlinear symmetrical restoring forces. Threefold objectives are pursued: (1). To generalize the tuning mechanism of the DR and the dynamical analysis of the system to the nonlinear case. (2). To evaluate the effect of such nonlinearity on system dynamics and vibration suppression. (3). To enhance control performance by properly constructing nonlinearity and, accordingly, to establish the design criteria. Without loss of generality, a widely considered three-spring-two-link model is borrowed as an example for constructing the stiffness nonlinearity. Then, an exclusive resultant-based calculation procedure is introduced to efficiently handle the delay-coupled nonlinear dynamics. Besides, the feedback tuning for complete vibration suppression and the related stability issues are tackled, showing that the nonlinearity can significantly extend the operable frequency band while posing no extra demands on the control law. Based on the parameters of an actual experimental setup, numerous comparisons between linear and nonlinear cases are performed to demonstrate how the DR settles a nonlinear primary structure and, furthermore, how such nonlinearity can affect control performance and how it can be utilized to enhance vibration suppression.

Low-frequency bandgap characteristics and vibration attenuation performance of metamaterial-tailored concrete-filled steel tube columns

Low-frequency vibrations, such as earthquakes and wind loads, may negatively affect the proper operation of buildings and bridges and even lead to structural failure. Even though, in the past two decades, metamaterial-based structures have been utilized in structure vibration suppression, they are mainly used in the mitigation of high-frequency vibrations, and it has been an open challenge to suppress low-frequency vibrations below 100Hz and ensure adequate bearing capacity in engineering structures. In this work, we present metamaterial composite column structures with built-in local resonators to achieve the low-frequency vibration mitigation effect. Compared to ordinary concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, the metamaterial columns (meta-columns) can utilize the rubber shear modulus to create a low-frequency flexural bandgap in 30–50 Hz. Dynamic stiffness is introduced in the Timoshenko beam and Bloch's theorem, the metamaterial analytical model is established, and the bandgap generation mechanism and vibration reduction effect are analyzed in conjunction with numerical simulations. Then, the bandgap effect and vibration attenuation law of the meta-columns are investigated by shaker tests at different acceleration amplitudes. Guided by theory and simulations, we have successfully fabricated several meta-composite columns with low-frequency bandgaps, which attenuate up to half of the vibrational energy near the bandgap center. The bandgap ranges derived from the theoretical and numerical models show a high degree of consistency with the experimental results, with deviations generally within 10 %, all indicating that a bandgap exists near the resonator self-oscillation frequency. Additionally, the bandgap is significantly affected by the number of unit cells and resonators, especially the meta-column with fewer resonators fails to form a bandgap where the top response is smaller than the bottom response. As the number of resonators and metamaterial units increases, the meta-columns exhibit wider bandgap and stronger vibration reduction performance.

Numerical and Experimental Investigations of Particle Dampers Attached to a Pipeline System

The structure of pipeline systems is complex, and the working environment is harsh. Under the excitation of the engine equipment foundation and pump fluid, it is easy to generate excessive vibration, which seriously affects the safe operation of the equipment. Particle damping achieves structural vibration suppression through the principle of particle collision dissipation. Due to the drawbacks of traditional pipeline vibration reduction methods, this article introduces a particle damping technology for pipeline system vibration suppression and designs particle dampers based on the structural characteristics of pipelines. We analyzed the energy dissipation mechanism of particle damping, revealed the influence of the materials, structure, external excitation, and other parameters of the pipeline particle dampers on the energy dissipation characteristics of the particle damping, established a pipeline vibration reduction test system with particle damping, and verified its effectiveness in pipeline system vibration reduction. This study can provide a technical reference for vibration reduction in pipeline systems.

Reliability evaluation and optimization design method of piezoelectric actuator vibration suppression system

As an effective means of structural vibration suppression, piezoelectric actuator vibration suppression system(PAVSS) has been gradually applied in structural vibration control. However, the performance degradation or failure of piezoelectric actuator under long service life will lead to the degradation of service reliability of PAVSS, so the scheme obtained by deterministic optimization method is difficult to ensure the service reliability. Aiming at the reliability evaluation and optimal design of PAVSS in service, the failure mechanism considering of the performance degradation or failure of piezoelectric actuator is analyzed, and the reliability evaluation method based on nested sampling and weighted statistics is constructed, which solves the reliability evaluation problem of PAVSS with the characteristics of load-sharing and redundancy. A reliability-based optimization method based on master-slave parallel genetic algorithm is proposed to optimize the position and angle of the actuators. At last, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are proved by an example, which not only provides a theoretical basis for the high reliability design of PAVSS in service, but also provides a new solution for the engineering problem of structural vibration control.

Magnetostrictive-based induced current inversion and amplification: Semi-active vibration suppression for multiple-degree-of-freedom flexible structures

Vibration suppression technology is indispensable in the operation of multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structures. Properties such as a light weight and reliability are essential for an MDOF structure. However, truss structures tend to be flexible and susceptible to vibration from external influences. Hence, vibration suppression for MDOF flexible structures is necessary. This paper proposes a new semi-active vibration suppression method with a magnetostrictive transducer that can be applied to vibration suppression of an MDOF flexible structure. The proposed method is achieved through an electrical control circuit consisting a magnetostrictive transducer, an inversion capacitor, an electronic switch, and diodes. The control input of the proposed method is considered the induced current. With strategic selection of the circuit statuses, the amplitude of the induced current can be inversed and amplified. Our proposed control strategy is to control the circuit statuses so that the vibration suppression performance can be as effective as possible. The control strategy is determined based on the vibration displacement and velocity of the structure. Numerical simulations were performed to predict the vibration suppression performance. Subsequently, validation experiments were performed using a vibrating cantilevered truss structure, which was considered an MDOF structure composed of many aluminum bar members and iron joints. Under various experimental conditions, the proposed method achieved suppression rates of 12.1–26.7%. The results validated that the proposed method is more effective than a conventional passive method for the vibration suppression of an MDOF flexible structure. The proposed method may aid in ensuring the safe operation of MDOF flexible structures, such as trusses, under extreme conditions.

Study on the vibration suppression of beam structures with nonlinear piezoelectric shunt damping

The vibration suppression of the nonlinear beam structure under harmonic excitations by employing the nonlinear piezoelectric shunt damping circuit (PSDC) is researched. The energy approach is utilized to deduce the dynamic equations of the nonlinear beams with nonlinear PSDC. The complexification-averaging approach and pseudo arc-length continuation approach are applied to calculate the frequency domain response of the beam structure. Numerous numerical examples are conducted to verify the present formulations, thereby demonstrating the remarkable efficiency and accuracy. The impacts of several parameters of the proposed PSDC are discussed and the optimal study of the nonlinear PSDC is further performed to obtain the optimal negative and nonlinear capacitances. The comparisons concerning the vibration of the beam structures with and without PSDC are implemented to examine the vibration mitigation performance of the designed PSDC. In the end, the design criterion of the nonlinear PSDC is given.

Topological optimization design on constrained layer damping treatment for vibration suppression of thin-walled structures via improved BESO method

In this paper, an improved bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) technique is proposed, to investigate topological optimization design on constrained layer damping (CLD) treatment for vibration suppression of experiment rack backplane. First, the optimization model for vibration reduction of CLD treated backplane is established, with volume fraction of CLD material as constraint condition, and the maximization of weighted value of the first four order modal loss factors of the structure as objective function. An improved evolutionary rate considering the CLD element sensitivity coefficient of variation of each iteration is presented to increase optimization efficiency. Then, the BESO with improved evolutionary rate is utilized to search the optimal CLD layout of the experiment rack backplane. CLD layouts of three optimization schemes with different volume fraction of CLD material are obtained, and are highly consistent with the stress distribution of the backplane viscoelastic layer, which verifies the rationality of the optimization results. Visualization of iterative optimization process, including elements removal/addition and dynamic change of CLD elements sensitivity in each iteration, is demonstrated, respectively. Further, the effect of improved evolutionary rate on optimization process is discussed. Compared with the conventional BESO method, the improved BESO technique can not only obtain a more reasonable optimized CLD layout, but also improve the optimization efficiency and accuracy. Finally, the validity of the optimized CLD layout is analyzed from three following aspects: natural frequency, modal loss factor and vibration response under order excitation. Numerical and experimental results show that the proposed BESO technique is effective and efficient in the application of CLD material, and the small amount of CLD material can be retained under the premise of ensuring damping.
