Effect of Nursing Interventions on Feeding Difficulties of Children with Cerebral Palsy

Context: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a static non-progressive brain disorder defined as a group of motor disorders resulting from brain damage before, during, or after birth. Children with CP frequently have feeding problems, growth disorders, feeding complications, communication disorders, mental obstruction, seizure disorders, auditory problems, and visual deficiency, which may significantly impact their health.
 Aim: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of nursing interventions on feeding difficulties of children with cerebral palsy.
 Methods: A quasi-experimental (pre/post-test) research design was utilized in this study that was conducted at the Neurologic Specialized Clinic at Children's Hospital affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospitals. A convenient sample of forty-five children with CP having feeding difficulties and their mothers was selected from the previously mentioned setting. Data were collected by using three tools, a structured interview questionnaire and a Children Observation Assessment Record to assess the child's ability and feeding difficulties of the studied children before and after the intervention.
 Results: The study reveals a mother's mean age of 31.33±4.46 and a child's mean age of 6.28±2.91. The children's assessment reveals that 84.4% of cerebral palsy children were hypotonic. Pre and post-test comparisons of children's BMI revealed a statistically significant difference at p=0.018, and feeding difficulties revealed a statistically significant difference in spoon feeding p= 0.007, biting p=0.002, chewing p=0.003, cup drinking p= 0.005, swallowing p=0.001, and drooling during eating p=0.009.
 Conclusion: The study concluded that the supportive nursing intervention program was successful in improving the feeding difficulties as regards spoon feeding, biting, chewing, cup drinking, swallowing, and drooling during eating after the intervention compared to the children's pre-intervention level. The study recommended applying supportive nursing interventions for children with CP having feeding difficulties as a main supportive nursing intervention to overcome feeding difficulties.

Effectiveness of acupressure Technique on Chemotherapy Induced Nausea and Vomiting among Breast Cancer Women: An Intervention Study

Background: Nausea and vomiting are the most common side effects associated with the usage of chemotherapy among breast cancer women. Aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of acupressure on chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting among breast cancer women. Research design: Quasi-experimental design was used to achieve the aim of the current study. Setting : The current study was conducted in outpatient oncology clinics at Zagazig University Hospitals. Subjects: Breast cancer women were divided into two groups (acupressure and control). They are on routine care and regular treatment. Tools: Interview questionnaire consists of four parts were used for data collection: Demographic characteristics and medical history, risk factors for nausea and vomiting, awareness regarding complementary therapy and the Index of Nausea, Vomiting and Retching (INVR). Results: The results showed that the mean scores of total occurrence, experience, distress for nausea ,vomiting ,retching in acupressure group were statistically significant decreased compared to control group throughout follow up days (p<0.05). Conclusion: Acupressure technique is positively affect nausea, vomiting and retching among breast cancer patients. Recommendation: Acupressure as technique should be carried out as supportive nursing intervention to relieve chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting in breast cancer patients.

The effect of supportive nursing intervention on burden and coping strategies of cargivers of children with cancer

Background and objective: Cancer is a serious health problem. Children with cancer are in particular need of support and care due to its complications followed by chemotherapy. These children should be cared for at home by family caregivers, and this places great mental and physical burden on caregivers. Therefore, appropriate and effective nursing interventions are essential in order to decrease burden and improve their coping pattern. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of supportive nursing intervention on the burden of care and coping pattern in caregivers of children with cancer.Methods: Research design: A Quasi-study pre, immediately after, and 1 month after the intervention was used to test the study hypothesis and fulfill the aim of the study. Setting: The study was conducted at outpatient clinic in Specialized Pediatric Hospital at Benha City. Subjects: Sixty caregivers for children with cancer was chosen through convenient sampling method and divided by using table of random numbers into two groups, study and control group. Caregivers of the study group attended seven nursing intervention sessions. Tools: The tools used were (1) An inertviewing questionnaire which include two part; sociodemoghaphic date and medical history for child and thier caregivers (2) Zarit Burden Scale (3) Coping Health Inventory for caregivers parents (CHIP).Results: During the study period, burden decreased in the study group and increased in the control group. Mean burden of care score before, immediately after, and 1 month after the intervention was 42.2, 33.7, and 25.6, respectively, in the study group and 44.2, 46.1, and 48.5, respectively, in the control group. In addition, the mean burden score in the study group significantly decreased in comparison with the control group (p &lt; .001). Also, coping strategies increased in the study group and decreased in the control group. Mean coping pattern score before, immediately after, and 1 month after the intervention was 32.8, 47.5, 53.6, respectively, in the study group and 34.7, 30.7 and 26.2, respectively, in the control group. In addition, the mean coping pattern score in the study group significantly improved in comparison with the control group (p &lt; .001).Conclusions: The supportaive nursing intervention can decrease burden in caregivers of children with cancer and consequently improve their methods of coping.

Effect of supportive nursing intervention on treatment adherence of schizophrenia patients and caregivers′ anxiety

Objective To investigate the effect of supportive nursing intervention on treatment adherence of patients with schizophrenia and caregivers′ anxiety. Methods A total of 72 schizophrenia patients and their caregivers were randomly divided into observation group and control group, with 36 patients in each group. Two group both received routine therapy and nursing care, meanwhile the observation group received an extra 3 months supportive nursing intervention. Medication adherence scale was used to evaluate treatment adherence of patients; self-rating anxiety scale (SAS)was used to evaluate mental health of caregivers, and nursing satisfaction scale was used to evaluate the satisfaction of nursing care. Results After 3 months intervention, treatment compliance(12 cases fully compliance, 18 cases partially compliance, 6 cases noncompliance) and nursing care compliance (11 cases fully compliance, 15 cases partially compliance, 10 cases noncompliance)of the observation group were obviously higher than those of the control group(χ2=13.461, 17.537; P<0.01). After intervention, SAS scores of the observed caregivers(37.51±5.93)were lower than that before intervention(43.11±4.98)and that of the control group(42.08±5.64)(t=4.283, 4.040; P<0.01). In the observation group, nursing care satisfaction of caregivers was markedly improved, including 29 cases (82.6%) satisfied, with 5 cases(14.2%) somewhat satisfied, 1 case(2.9%) unsatisfied; while in the control group, 15 cases (41.7%)satisfied, 11 cases (30.6%)somewhat satisfied, 9 cases (25%)unsatisfied, and the difference was statistically significant(χ2=13.105, P<0.01). Conclusions Supportive nursing intervention can significantly improve the treatment and nursing adherence of schizophrenia patients, alleviate caregivers′ anxiety, and promote their satisfaction of nursing care. 수술 전 수술실간호사의 동영상 프로그램을 활용한 지지간호중재가 자궁적출술 환자의 불안에 미치는 효과

This study was to identify the effects of supportive nursing intervention using video-program of operating room nurses before operation on laparoscopic hysterectomy patient's anxiety. This study was nonequivalent control group pre-post test design. The data were collected from May 1 to Jun 20, 2013 and analyzed by x²-test, Fisher's exact test and t-test using SPSS 20.0 program. Experimental group(who received supportive nursing intervention) and control group(who received booklet education) was respectively consisted of 25 patients who were laparoscopy hysterectomy. The anxiety(p=.002) of experimental group was significantly lower than control group. The systolic(p=.012) and diastolic(p=.045) pressure of experimental group was significantly lower than control group, but pulse wasn't. The supportive nursing intervention for preoperative patient is considered effective and useful in reducing anxiety. Further research is warranted to investigate the supportive nursing intervention long-term effect.

Revalidation of the postpartum stress scale

The purpose of this study was to test further and validate the postpartum stress scale developed for Taiwanese women. The postpartum stress scale was developed to measure postpartum stress in Taiwanese women. However, over the last decade, the social context in Taiwan has changed and several items in the scale needed to be re-examined. Non-experimental quantitative research with repeated measures at the first and fifth week of the postpartum period was conducted for this study. A proportional stratified quota was used to sample from the 10 hospitals and six clinics with the highest birth rates in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Participants were 505 and 518 postpartum women at each time point, respectively. Factor analysis at two points in time identified three attributes of postpartum stress: (a) maternal role attainment, (b) lack of social support, and (c) negative body changes. The Cronbach's alphas at each time point were 0.94 and 0.92, respectively. The results support the postpartum stress scale as a validated instrument that has been conceptualized, created, and tested with Taiwanese postpartum women. This study was done in the hope that women experiencing specific postpartum stressors would be detected and subsequently helped by supportive nursing intervention that provides stressor-specific coping resources.

1. This article documents the development of a nursing role to support the staff and faculty of a state residential school for adolescents during closure of that institution. 2. The process of institutional closure resulted in increased ambiguity and need to redefine social expectations and responsibilities. Supportive nursing intervention facilitated the transition. 3. Theory and intervention associated with loss through death and dying can be appropriately adapted for use in nursing intervention during loss experienced with organizational death and institutional closure. 4. Because the meaning and experience of loss during institutional closure involves everyone and does not occur in a uniform or linear manner, nurses' roles must be flexible, responsive to contextual change, and introspective, as well as analytical and supportive.
