Hubungan Pola Asuh Orang Tua Terhadap Perilaku Sosial Anak Usia Dini

This research aims to compare several aspects of research results between 2019 and 2024. The method used is Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Social behavior is closely related to children's behavior in adapting to the rules of society in the surrounding environment. A person's social behavior can be seen from the reciprocal relationships between each individual through the positive response patterns of each party. To determine someone who has a social spirit, their behavior must reflect the achievement of the socialization process between relationships, meanwhile individual personnel who have a non-social personality will be seen from their behavior as not achieving the socialization process within their social circle. Our research problem is how much influence parents' parenting styles have on the development of children's social behavior, so that positive interactions are needed for children, such as emotional support and effective communication. This research aims to determine the influence of parenting patterns on the social behavior of early childhood. In this research, the results of the discussion can be seen through the effect size of 6 previous studies. The results of the research show that there is a significant relationship between parenting styles and the social behavior of early childhood. The facts show that parenting style has the highest result, namely 4.378, and parental involvement in the field of social behavior education has a medium result, namely 0.507

Exploring the interplay of weight-based teasing and sociodemographic factors in adolescent weight bias internalization.

Research has highlighted the potential adverse effects of weight bias internalization (WBI) on adolescents, but there has been little examination of WBI and sources of weight teasing (family, peers, or both) or across racial/ethnic diversity of adolescents. We aimed to examine the relationship between WBI and sources of weight teasing across sociodemographic characteristics and weight status in a diverse community sample of adolescents. Data were collected from a U.S. sample of 1859 adolescents aged 10-17 years (59% female; 43% White, 27% Black or African American, and 25% Latino). An online questionnaire was used to assess participants' experiences of weight teasing from family members, peers, or both, and their weight status, weight-related goals, WBI, and sociodemographic characteristics. Adolescents experiencing weight teasing from both family and peers reported the highest levels of WBI, while those reporting no teasing exhibited the lowest levels. These patterns were observed across sex, race/ethnicity, weight status, and weight goals, and persisted after controlling for depressive symptoms. Notably, family influences played a salient role, with adolescents reporting higher WBI if teased by family only compared to teasing from peers only. Sex and racial differences were also observed in adolescents' experiences with weight-based teasing. Our study reveals associations between adolescent weight-based teasing, WBI, and sociodemographic factors. Weight-based teasing, whether from family and peers or from family only, was associated with increased WBI. Interventions targeting weight stigma in youth should not be limited to peer-focused efforts, but should also emphasize supportive family communication.

The Influence of Assertiveness and Social Support from Families of Social Rehabilitation Program Participants on Islamic Communication Skills in Medan Class 1 Penitentiary

Social rehabilitation program, conveying religious messages and maintaining crucial aspects of religion and society. Effective communication is needed to build good relationships with other people, convey opinions and aspirations, and resolve conflicts with social rehabilitation program participants. This research aims to see the influence of assertive communication and social support from families of social rehabilitation participants on Islamic communication skills in the Class 1 Penitentiary in Medan. Based on the results of the research and discussion, several conclusions can be drawn as follows: First, assertiveness influences the Islamic communication skills of Social Rehabilitation Program Participants in Medan Class 1 Penitentiary. The results of this research identify that the better the level of assertiveness a person has, the Islamic communication skills of the inmates of class I Penitentiary in Medan will improve. Second, family social support influences the Islamic communication skills of Social Rehabilitation Program Participants in Medan Class 1 Penitentiary. The results of this research identify that the better the level of family social support received by a prison inmate will improve the Islamic communication skills of class I Medan Penitentiary inmates. Third, assertiveness and Social Support together have a significant effect on Islamic Communication Skills in Medan Class 1 Penitentiary, Participants in the Social Rehabilitation Program.

Stronger together: the longitudinal relations between partner responsiveness, dyadic coping and PTSD recovery

ABSTRACT Background: Past research has primarily focused on negative associations between PTSD and relationships. Therefore, this investigation delves into the potential positive role of these relational aspects in aiding PTSD recovery during treatment. Objective: This study aimed to examine the impact of dyadic coping and perceived partner responsiveness on treatment trajectories of PTSD patients. Method: The study included 90 participants, who were requested to complete online questionnaires twice, with a six-month gap between the measures. Results: The results from linear regression analyses indicated that perceived partner responsiveness had a positive effect on PTSD recovery, whereas dyadic coping had the opposite effect: higher levels of dyadic coping were associated with an increase in posttraumatic stress symptoms over time. Additional examination of the subscales indicated that heightened communication between clients and partners regarding stress was related with increased posttraumatic stress symptoms. Conclusions: These findings underscore the importance and complexity of effective and supportive communication between patients with PTSD and their partners. While existing literature supports both perceived partner responsiveness and dyadic coping as beneficial, this study indicates that only perceived partner responsiveness positively impacted PTSD recovery.

Mental health and quality of life in patients with chronic liver disease: a single-center structural equation model

BackgroundChronic liver disease (CLD) is one of the leading disease burdens in Pakistan. Until now, there has only been limited focus in the country on providing health services through tertiary services in urban cities, whereas there is almost no research in Pakistan on the mental health and quality of life of CLD patients. This study aimed to understand which predictors influence the mental health and quality of life of CLD patients in order to advise better policy protection.MethodsData was collected from CLD patients at the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre, Lahore, Pakistan. A total of 850 respondents were part of the final sample. The age of respondents ranged from 18 to 79 years and included the following diagnosis: (i) Chronic Viral Hepatitis (n = 271), (ii) Cirrhosis (n = 259), (iii) Hepatocellular Carcinoma (n = 193), and (iv) Non-viral Liver Disease (n = 127).ResultsMean results reveal that females as well as illiterate patients need more support for mental health and communication with their physician; whereas men need more support to develop coping strategies. Structural equation modelling results reveal that the severity of symptoms (β = 0.24, p < 0.001), coping strategies (β=-0.51, p < 0.001), and doctor communication (β=-0.35, p < 0.001) predict mental health. Quality of life is associated with the severity of symptoms (β=-0.36, p < 0.001), coping strategies (β = 0.26, p < 0.05), and doctor communication (β = 0.09, p < 0.05).ConclusionsA ‘bio-psycho-social-spiritual’ model is recommended for Pakistan’s CLD patients which includes the integration of social officers to provide support in four key areas to secure mental health and quality of life of patients.

The Influence of Organizational Behaviour in Schools on Teacher Performance at Special School

This study analyzes how organizational behaviour affects teacher performance at Bakti Putra Special School. Organizational behaviour includes interactions and dynamics that affect employee morale, motivation, and production. The mixed-methods study collects data from teachers and administrators using quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Positive organizational behaviour, effective communication, supportive leadership, and collaborative teamwork improve teacher performance. Bad behaviours such as poor communication and lack of support negatively affect teachers’ motivation and efficacy. The research also emphasizes the importance of a positive company culture for educators’ professional development and work happiness. The study helps school administrators and policymakers improve teacher performance and educational results by addressing organizational behaviour variables. The findings highlight the need to continuously evaluate and improve organizational processes to foster teaching quality and improve Bakti Putra Special School children’s learning experiences. Organizational behaviour emphasizes teamwork training. Teamwork is better than solo performance when activities need several skills. Individual and collective attitudes and interactions with the organizational context are shown by organizational behaviour. Teacher performance is based on his roles and obligations. Field evidence suggests teacher performance is still poor. The study examines how organizational behaviour affects teacher performance at SKh Bhakti Putra Kab. Tangerang Banten. This study has 12 participants. A questionnaire-based survey collects data.

Training and education of specialists in the field of labour law

Objective/Aim: In the context of a constantly changing legislative environment and the necessity for professionals to develop their skills, the research focuses on identifying effective methods and tools that facilitate efficient learning and professional development in the field of labour law. This study aimed to propose a pedagogical technology for the preparation and training of specialists in the field of labour law and to assess the effectiveness of the training based on the specified technology. Method: The study involved 124 participants, with 63 in the experimental group and 61 in the control group. Statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel. The student’s t-test indicated significant improvements in the experimental group’s training effectiveness, confirming the proposed pedagogical technology’s efficacy. Results: Consequently, implementing training and education technology for specialists in the labour law field was proposed to enhance the indicators. The criteria for the preparation of specialists in the field of labour law were delineated, including knowledge of labour legislation, consulting and support skills, analytical skills, communication skills, and continuous learning. According to the criteria above, levels of preparation for specialists in the field of labour law were established, namely high, medium, and essential. The proposed training and education technology for specialists in the field of labour encompasses the following tools: The utilisation of online platforms and educational resources, virtual classes and simulations, the incorporation of multimedia materials, the integration of adaptive learning technologies, the implementation of project- and problem-oriented teaching methodologies, the incorporation of interactive methodologies, the incorporation of cloud technologies and mobile applications, and the provision of assessment and feedback. Conclusion: The proposed pedagogical technology effectively enhances the training and education of labour law specialists. The experimental group’s significant improvement in learning outcomes confirms the technology’s efficacy. Implication: The findings of this research hold significant social implications. Improved training and education of labour law specialists leads to a more competent and effective legal workforce. This, in turn, ensures better protection of workers’ rights and fairer employer-employee relations, contributing to overall social stability.

Factors that support children and young people to express their views and to have them heard in healthcare: An inductive qualitative content analysis.

Despite development of healthcare charters supporting Article 12 of The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, children and young people remain largely silenced in discussions about their healthcare. This article is based on the premise that children and young people should be able to exercise their right to express their views and be heard in all matters that affect their lives. This study examined children's and young people's experiences of expressing their views and having them heard in an Australian healthcare context. Using child-centred inquiry and 'draw, write, and tell' methods, data were collected from 20 children and young people. Five factors that supported children and young people to express their views and have their views heard were identified: time, relationships with health professionals, communication, teamwork, and family support. By paying attention to these factors, clinicians and others in health settings can better facilitate child-centred practices and support children and young people to express their views and have those views heard.

Affective dimensions of academic librarians’ experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic: experiences and lessons learned for information literacy

PurposeThis article explores the affective dimensions of academic librarians’ experiences during the forced pivot to emergency remote teaching because of the Covid-19 pandemic.Design/methodology/approachThrough semi-structured interviews with librarians at 18 university libraries in Ontario, Canada, the researcher prompted study participants to reflect on how their work and that of other librarians in their organization changed during the period of focus, including the main challenges and opportunities experienced for information literacy instruction.FindingsThis study finds evidence of stress and anxiety among academic librarians teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic, including lack of confidence and skills with eLearning and work-life balance challenges. At the same time, the data show strengths and successes fueled by resilience, collaboration and a growing culture of care, which in many cases, resulted in strong expressions of pride by interviewees on what was achieved during this global health crisis.Originality/valueThis study is one of few adopting a qualitative research methodology to explore the affective dimensions of academic librarians’ experience of information literacy instruction during the Covid-19 pandemic. Its implications are instructive for future pedagogical approaches and workplace culture among information literacy teams, including communication, collaboration, flexibility and leadership support.

Parents' expectations regarding case management for rare diseases in Switzerland: mixed-method findings from an online survey.

This pilot study aims to enhance understanding by examining parents' specific views on the requirements, content and objectives of case management and advanced care coordination for children with rare diseases during childhood. The findings of this study are expected to offer valuable insights and recommendations for existing and future initiatives in clinical practice and research, with the goal of improving the comprehensive, child-centred and family-orientated approach to case management. This pilot study is part of an ongoing prospective study (SPACE), involving parents and families from various networks in Switzerland. Participants were parents recruited from the Children with Rare Diseases (KMSK) network consisting of families with children with rare diseases. The survey questionnaire covered demographic information; expectations and perceived need for case management; assessment of their quality of life and their child's suffering; and evaluation of interprofessional and interdisciplinary communication. Qualitative data from free-response answers were analysed using Mayring's content analysis and descriptive statistics were used to analyse quantitative data from Likert-scale questions. The study included 108 respondent families from among the 775 in the KMSK, a 14% response rate. The age of their children ranged from 0.4 to 24 years (mean: 8) and their level of suffering in the past six months varied, with 31.5% indicating intense or very intense suffering. In terms of case management, 15.8% of families reported access while 32.4% expressed a need but did not have access to it. The study identified three categories of parental expectations regarding case management, emphasising the importance of interprofessional collaboration, effective communication and comprehensive support. The findings shed light on the high need for case management support with a current undersupply in Switzerland and an association with reduced parental quality of life, highlighting the necessity for diverse support and assistance to effectively manage the challenges faced by families with children with rare diseases.

Geriatric assessment and management with question prompt list using a web-based application for elderly patients with cancer to communicate aging-related concerns: A randomized clinical trial (J-SUPPORT 2101 study).

1511 Background: Older adults with cancer have aging-related physical and psychosocial problems that should be fully shared with their oncologists. Geriatric assessment (GA) can assess these aging-related problems and guide management. Communication support might also facilitate implementation of GA-guided management (GAM). We conducted this single-blind, parallel-group, multicenter, randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of a program providing GAM recommendation and communication support between older Japanese patients with cancer and their oncologists. Methods: Eligibility criteria were age≥70 years, advanced or recurrent cancers of gastrointestinal origin, referral to one of the two institutions for first- or second-line systemic therapy, and impairment in at least one GA domain as assessed using a web-based application at baseline. In the intervention group, GAM recommendations and question prompt list (QPL) were provided to patients by trained intervention providers to be shared with their oncologists at the first outpatient visit after randomization. Over 5 months after the initial intervention, implementation of GAM recommendations was reviewed monthly by the intervention providers with the patients and their oncologists. Patients in the control group received usual care. The primary endpoint was the number of conversations about aging-related concerns at the first visit. The quality of conversations was assessed in terms of the number of conversations in which stated concerns were acknowledged and considered further by the oncologist and the number of conversations in which acknowledged concerns motivated implementation of GAM recommendations. Results: A total of 215 patients (99 women, 116 men; median age 75 [range 70-88] years) were randomized (n=108/107 in the intervention/control group) between September 2021 and September 2023. There were no differences between two groups in patient background characteristics including the prevalence of GA impairments. The number of conversations about aging-related concerns was significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group (mean [SD] 2.95 [1.53] vs. 1.90 [1.49], p&lt;0.0001). The number of high-quality conversations and number of conversations about GAM recommendations were also significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group (1.73 [1.40] vs. 1.12 [1.16], p=0.001; 0.57 [0.74] vs. 0.28 [0.47], p=0.001, respectively). Conclusions: Our program providing GAM recommendations and communication support successfully facilitated aging-related communications between patients and their oncologists. We will further examine whether facilitated communication leads to actual implementation of GAM and improved patient health outcomes in a follow-up study. Clinical trial information: UMIN000045428 .

MAIN FACTORS AFFECTING THE FINANCIAL STRUCTURE OF ENTERPRISES

Purpose- The purpose of this study is to reveal which main elements affect financial structures within the fields of activity of businesses and the rules they must comply with. Methodology- In order to carry out profitable and efficient activities in business life, complying with laws and regulations, ensuring safety, trust and motivation among employees, regulating employees' rights, wages and personal development have been tried to be revealed with economic information. The harmony of capital owners, managers and employees and the importance of experience and knowledge in making the company financially profitable are explained. Findings- Occupational health and safety have been determined as the order of the working environment, advanced technological infrastructure, support of communication and cooperation, allocation of meeting and rest areas, implementation of policies that make employees valuable, exchange of information in crises, elements based on experience and knowledge that shape and direct international business life. In addition, detection of errors, arrangements between departments, elimination of negativities due to the time effect, positive contribution of employees to business activities, efficient use of financial instruments and development and implementation of audit mechanisms were also found to be important. Conclusion- The problems created by the incompatibility between business life and managerial elements should be sought and solutions should be sought with new working models to eliminate these problems. It is clear that the financial structure of companies will improve, and they will become profitable with the cooperation between employees and managers.

Older adults with communication disabilities and their use of communication support at doctor’s visits: a nationally representative study

Purpose Older adults with communication disabilities (CDs) experience barriers to receiving care and face a paucity of accommodations for their disability. Utilizing someone that supports communication with healthcare providers (communication support persons) may be a way that this group self-supports their disability. We examined if this utilization was independently associated with CDs among older adults. We also sought to understand if socioeconomic factors were associated with utilization. Methods We used the 2015 National Health and Aging Trends Survey (NHATS) to conduct a cross-sectional analysis of Medicare beneficiaries (n = 5954) with functional hearing, expressive, or cognitive difficulties. We calculated a weighted, population prevalence and an adjusted prevalence ratio (APR) controlling for sociodemographic, health and other disability factors. Results Among community dwelling older adults, having CDs was associated with higher utilization of a communication support person at medical visits (APR: 1.41 [CI: 1.27 − 1.57]). Among adults with CDs, Black adults and women had lower levels of utilization as compared to White adults and men, respectively. Conclusion Communication support persons may be a way that older adults with CDs self-support their disability. However, not all older adults with CDs bring someone and variation by social factors could suggest that unmet support needs exist.

Artificial intelligence–enabled care equipment

Abstract With the aging of China’s population and changes in the disease spectrum of older adults, China will face a multitude of age-related health issues and, in turn, demand for medical care services. Artificial Intelligence (AI) care equipment has become an effective means of addressing imbalances between the supply of and demand for medical care services. AI care equipment can provide intelligent, precise and personalized care services for the elderly, the core of which is to analyze the data generated during the use of care equipment and provide real-time feedback. Common AI care equipment includes mobility aid devices, bathing aid devices, smart wearable devices, and care robots. AI care equipment can not only help older adults and other users with daily living assistance and rehabilitation, but also disease prevention, environmental risk factor screening as well as emotional communication and psychological support. The technical, social and market dilemmas faced by AI care equipment will be solved through the establishment of industry standards, the formulation of laws and regulations, and the strengthening of talent training. Our goal is to promote the popularity and development of AI care equipment, and to address the shortage of care resources brought about by the aging population.

Variability in adolescent reception of parental support: Testing the domain-matching hypothesis.

The present study investigated matches and mismatches between adolescent and parent socialization domains (i.e., protection, guidance) as related to adolescent reception of parental support during a laboratory-based social evaluation challenge. Participants were 80 early adolescents (Mage = 12.36 years, SD = 1.33, 55% males, 55% Black, 42.5% White, and 2.5% other races or ethnicities) and one parent or guardian per adolescent. Observational measures of parent socialization domains assessed sensitivity to adolescents' thoughts and feelings (protection domain) and prosocial behavioral advice (guidance domain). Measures of parallel adolescent socialization domains included self-reported discomfort during a social evaluation challenge (protection domain) and desire to continue the social evaluation challenge (guidance domain). Adolescent reception of parental support was assessed using an observational measure of adolescent attentiveness and responsiveness to the parent during a parent-adolescent discussion about how to approach the social evaluation challenge. Analyses of interactions between measures of parent and adolescent socialization domains revealed: (a) higher levels of adolescent-reported discomfort during the social evaluation challenge interfered with their reception of parental prosocial behavioral advice but did not enhance their reception of parental sensitivity, and (b) higher levels of adolescent-reported desire to continue the social evaluation challenge interfered with their reception of parental sensitivity but did not enhance their reception of parental prosocial behavioral advice. This study advances socialization research by identifying conditions under which adolescents are more and less receptive to supportive communication from parents. Unpacking the prevalence: A warning against overstating the recently narrowed gap for Black autistic youth.

Recent findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network's 2020 prevalence report indicate that disparities in autism diagnoses between Black and White youth have narrowed, reflecting improved screening, awareness, and access to services (Maenner et al., 2023. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Surveillance Summaries (Washington, D.C.: 2002), 72, 1-14.). Claims of reducing disparities beyond prevalence rates, however, are not fully supported, as indicated by the reality that Black youth whose screenings indicate autistic traits are still not being referred for full evaluation or early intervention services at the same rate as their White peers (Major et al., 2020. Autism, 24, 1629-1638; Smith et al., 2020. Pediatrics, 145, S35-S46.). Black 8-year-olds identified as autistic still experience disparate educational placements (Waitoller et al., 2010. The Journal of Special Education. 44, 29-49.) where services may not be autism-specific or have Individual Education Plan goals only focused on "behavior problems" (Severini et al., 2018. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 48, 3261-3272.), are served in the most restrictive environments (Skiba et al., 2006. Exceptional Children, 72, 411-424.) and lack consistent augmentative and alternative communication support (Pope et al., 2022. American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, 31, 2159-2174.). Additionally, ADMM researchers report consistent disparities in the identification of co-occurring intellectual disability where Black autistic children have significantly more co-occurrences than White autistic children. The purpose of this commentary is to first examine the assertion that the narrowed gap indicates, "…improved…access to services among historically underserved groups," (p. 9) (Maenner et al., 2023. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Surveillance Summaries (Washington, D.C.: 2002), 72, 1-14.). We will then recommend strategies to address the ongoing disparities.

Perceptions of University Culture and Community Among Online Adjuncts

Using a qualitative survey, this study explores the perceptions of university culture and community held by graduate-level online adjunct instructors in two different schools of education. The intention of the research was to determine how the online adjuncts perceived their position within the university community and to solicit recommendations for improving the professional relationship between the schools themselves and their online adjuncts. The findings of this educational research add to the growing body of knowledge highlighting the importance and relevance of enhancing collegiality, communication, and collaboration with and among online adjunct instructors and the possible connection of adjuncts’ flourishing to student retention and persistence. Survey results suggested that communication, collaboration, respect, recognition, and systems of support were critical aspects that impacted the perceived climate and culture of adjuncts in an online teaching modality. This research demonstrates one avenue for engaging online adjunct faculty in building a framework for their support based on their own suggestions and recommendations. Universities, departments, or programs that offer multiple opportunities to collaborate may improve course content, collegiality, and connections with online adjunct instructors and the students they serve.

The use of Intermediaries (communication specialists) at Parole Board oral hearings in England and Wales

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to find out what role intermediaries have in facilitating communication with victims and prisoners at Parole Board (PB) oral hearings.Design/methodology/approachA survey was designed and administered to 39 PB members to find out their perceptions of, and experiences with, the use of intermediaries. Frequency tables and verbatim quotations are used to report the results.FindingsOverall, participants had not experienced any use of intermediaries with victims or family members presenting victim personal statements at an oral hearing. Further, there had been limited use of intermediaries for prisoners attending oral hearings. Nevertheless, there was a good recognition of a range of communication needs that a prisoner might present with at a hearing. There was also general support for the use of intermediaries with some caution about possible delays to procedural fairness.Practical implicationsThe early identification of communication support needs for prisoners and victims attending an oral hearing is essential. The PB should raise awareness with the PB Membership about the role of intermediaries. The PB should continue to develop guidance and policy surrounding intermediaries. Prison lawyers and HM Prison and Probation Service may require specialist training in identifying communication needs in vulnerable prisoners and identifying when a communication specialist might be required for an oral hearing.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first published paper examining the role of intermediaries at PB oral hearings. It builds on the evidence base of the use of intermediaries in other criminal justice contexts.

PENGARUH PERCEIVED ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT DAN PENGARUH KOMUNIKASI INTERPERSONAL TERHADAP KINERJA KARYAWAN

In maintaining the sustainability of the company, human resources play a very important role. Therefore, the company needs to provide support to employees so that they feel valued, which will ultimately have a positive impact on their development and performance. This study aims to identify the influence of interpersonal communication and organizational support on employee performance at Tirta Terubuk Company in Bengkalis Regency. The results of this study indicate that Perceived Organizational Support partially affects Employee Performance, with a t-value of 3.220 &gt; 1.6779 and a significance level of 0.039 &lt; 0.05, as well as a positive regression coefficient value of 0.075. Interpersonal Communication partially affects Employee Performance with a t-value of 2.823 &gt; 1.6779 and a significance level of 0.015 &lt; 0.05, along with a positive regression coefficient value of 0.190. In simultaneous testing, Perceived Organizational Support and Interpersonal Communication have a simultaneous effect on employee performance variables of 65%, while the remaining 35% is influenced by other factors.

Federal, state, tribal, or local entities in the United States issue fish consumption advisories (FCAs) as guidance for safer consumption of locally caught fish containing contaminants. Fish consumption advisories have been developed for commonly detected compounds such as mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls. The existing national guidance does not specifically address the unique challenges associated with bioaccumulation and consumption risk related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). As a result, several states have derived their own PFAS-related consumption guidelines, many of which focus on one frequently detected PFAS, known as perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). However, there can be significant variation between tissue concentrations or trigger concentrations (TCs) of PFOS that support the individual state-issued FCAs. This variation in TCs can create challenges for risk assessors and risk communicators in their efforts to protect public health. The objective of this article is to review existing challenges, knowledge gaps, and needs related to issuing PFAS-related FCAs and to provide key considerations for the development of protective fish consumption guidance. The current state of the science and variability in FCA derivation, considerations for sampling and analytical methodologies, risk management, risk communication, and policy challenges are discussed. How to best address PFAS mixtures in the development of FCAs, in risk assessment, and establishment of effect thresholds remains a major challenge, as well as a source of uncertainty and scrutiny. This includes developments better elucidating toxicity factors, exposures to PFAS mixtures, community fish consumption behaviors, and evolving technology and analytical instrumentation, methods, and the associated detection limits. Given the evolving science and public interests informing PFAS-related FCAs, continued review and revision of FCA approaches and best practices are vital. Nonetheless, consistent, widely applicable, PFAS-specific approaches informing methods, critical concentration thresholds, and priority compounds may assist practitioners in PFAS-related FCA development and possibly reduce variability between states and jurisdictions.
