Theories of digital platforms for supply chain management: a systematic literature review

PurposeDigital platforms transform supply chains. However, no unified theoretical understanding of digital platforms exists. Thus, the underlying research aims at investigating platform theories for supply chain management tasks.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conduct a systematic literature review to identify relevant theories in the context of digital platforms and synthesize the respective findings for supply chain management tasks.FindingsIn total, 43 papers and 41 different relevant theories are identified. The most prominent theories are the resource-based view, transaction cost economics, internalization theory and the dynamic capabilities approach. Digital platforms alter and change the boundary decisions of firms. Therefore, they have various implications for supply chain management tasks such as make-or-buy decisions or the orchestration of resources to sustain a competitive advantage.Practical implicationsThe identified supply chain theories as well as platform theories and their overlap provide a meaningful starting point for discussing and developing new and platform-based supply chain management approaches in the B2B domain.Originality/valueThe conducted systematic literature review provides a first starting point for building a holistic theoretical approach to digital platforms in supply chains. Thus, the paper contributes a missing link for discussing digital platforms and their theoretical foundations for supply chain management tasks.

Food safety in consumer relations: the influence of personal values

Purpose: The aim of this article is to analyze the relationship between food safety and personal values in light of consumer behavior theory. Method: In this theoretical essay, this relationship is examined through a discussion on how consumers' subjective perceptions are influenced by their personal values in various contexts involving food safety. Findings: The debate addresses social, cultural, economic and environmental factors, considering that values are shaped through the interaction of these variables. By outlining their positioning strategies based on segments of values that are relevant to consumers, organizations are more likely to evoke favorable attitudes towards product acquisition. This includes considering external factors because they shape the formation of personal values and thus influence individuals' choices related to food and their perception of food safety. Originality: This work enriches the theory of personal values in the field of consumer behavior related to food safety by exploring the complex interplay between personal, cultural and market values. Considering personal values as a central element, the analysis presented provides insights for the development of more targeted marketing actions, effective public policies and food supply chain management approaches that meet consumers' expectations in terms of food safety.

Angkut.in: The Future of Trucking by Digital Product Design Journey

Jepara Regency in Central Java, Indonesia, is renowned as the "World Carving Center" due to its flourishing furniture carving industry. Despite successfully exporting carvings globally, the distribution process encounters challenges with conventional methods, primarily due to a limited truck fleet exacerbated by the post-pandemic situation. This study aims to scrutinize the effectiveness of "Angkut.in" as an innovative solution for overcoming hurdles in heavy goods distribution, particularly furniture. Utilizing Design Thinking, the research incorporates an analysis of the application of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and digital marketing strategies within the "Angkut.in" application design. Employing a Supply Chain Management (SCM) approach, the research assesses the application's impact on local innovation growth, operational efficiency, and the competitiveness of the furniture industry. Market analysis indicates a focus on the online furniture entrepreneur segment. The marketing strategy involves real-time tracking services, live price checking, and user-friendly application interfaces. The business model adopts a Business-to-Business (B2B) approach, emphasizing transportation services for large goods businesses. The business identity design encompasses color selection, typography, and graphic elements that mirror the innovative and reliable nature of goods delivery services. Risk analysis covers technological factors, market competition, loss of goods, data security, capital limitations, regulatory changes, market acceptance, and force majeure. Angkut.In is categorized as a low-risk business according to the risk analysis matrix. The prototype validation by UKM Partners yielded a score of 8.5 out of 10, indicating maturity and compliance with most evaluation criteria. The provided fix notes will guide further development steps before the official launch.

Assessment Of Supply Chain Collaboration in Case of The Seaport Logistics of Iron Ore Export: Use of The Supply Chain Management Framework

Global seaport logistics has attained importance in the context of globalization. Complexities of global seaport logistics have necessitated collaboration of supply chains using the seaports.
 The mining companies and associated manufacturing companies are heavily dependent on seaport logistics for import of key raw materials such as Copper Concentrate, Coal, Iron ore, Dolomite, Bauxite as well as the export of the mined product. The objective of this research is to carry out an assessment of the level of supply chain collaboration in case of a supply chain pertaining to the export of iron ore. For this purpose, we used a supply chain management approach in the analysis of the supply chain of ABC, a company engaged with the mining and export of iron ore. More explicitly we referred to the supply chain management framework defined by Ahmad and Ullah (Ahmed & Ullah, 2012). We gathered the needed information by conducting semi structured interviews with the officials of ABC.

Colored Petri Nets for Modeling and Simulation of a Green Supply Chain System

Green supply chain is an emerging approach in supply chain management to reduce environmental impact of the process concerning the flow of goods and materials. As a discrete-event system, supply chain can be modeled using Petri Nets. Colored Petri Nets (CPNs) extend the classical Petri net formalism with data, time and hierarchy. These extensions makes it possible to deal with the green aspects of the supply chain.This paper deals with the Colored Petri Net approach to model and simulate a green supply chain system. The forward supply chain network starts from the raw material suppliers, to the manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and to the final customers. The reverse supply chain network is made of collecting points, recycling plants, disassembly plants, and secondary material market. A government environment agency plays the role of regulation of the recycling process. A colored Petri net model of the green supply chain is developed and simulated with CPN Tools, a dedicated software for CPN models. The simulation results as well as the state-space analysis results validate the correctness of the model.

A guided tour through the qualitative research city

AbstractThis article argues for the expansion of qualitative research approaches in supply chain management (SCM). By comparing mainstream qualitative approaches to popular Parisian landmarks, it argues that just as tourists can miss the city's essence by visiting only famous sites, SCM researchers limit their understanding by relying solely on conventional approaches. It emphasizes that, much like exploring lesser‐known parts of a city, incorporating diverse qualitative approaches can enrich SCM research. Highlighting the dominance of realist and positivist approaches, the article calls for greater inclusion of nominalist and anti‐positivist approaches. It introduces different “buildings” of qualitative research (grounded theory, interpretive research, sensemaking, sociomateriality, actor–network theory, ethnography, action research, discourse analysis, narrative research, and historical research), each offering unique insights into SCM. The article argues that embracing these diverse approaches can lead to a deeper understanding of complex global supply chain phenomena and encourage innovative theoretical development, thereby broadening the scope and impact of the discipline.

An integrated approach for modern supply chain management: Utilizing advanced machine learning models for sentiment analysis, demand forecasting, and probabilistic price prediction

In the contemporary business landscape, effective interpretation of customer sentiment, accurate demand forecasting, and precise price prediction are pivotal in making strategic decisions and efficiently allocating resources. Harnessing the vast array of data available from social media and online platforms, this paper presents an integrative approach employing machine learning, deep learning, and probabilistic models. Our methodology leverages the BERT transformer model for customer sentiment analysis, the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) model for demand forecasting, and the Bayesian Network for price prediction. These state-of-the-art techniques are adept at managing large-scale, high-dimensional data and uncovering hidden patterns, surpassing traditional statistical methods in performance. By bridging these diverse models, we aim to furnish businesses with a comprehensive understanding of their customer base and market dynamics, thus equipping them with insights to make informed decisions, optimize pricing strategies, and manage supply chain uncertainties effectively. The results demonstrate the strengths and areas for improvement of each model, ultimately presenting a robust and holistic approach to tackling the complex challenges of modern supply chain management.

Novel Simulation Optimization Approach for Supply Chain Coordination and Management

The importance of supply chain management is paramount nowadays and this research seeks ways for better supply chain coordination. We present a roadmap for implementing true digital replicas of physical supply chains based on a disruptive simulation modeling approach. These digital replicas can enable the comparative evaluation of existing Just-In-Time (JIT) control policies for the first time without the unrealistic assumptions of existing studies in the literature. These realistic supply chain simulation models have the prospect of giving us better understanding of their behavior and of their complex dynamics. We provide guidelines for using the digital replicas and advanced optimization approaches to derive novel supply chain coordination policies pushing the field of JIT control beyond the state-of-the-art. An equally important contribution of this research is that it advances the field of hybrid discrete event-system dynamics (DES-SD) simulation with the prospect of pushing Systems Engineering to the next level. This research discusses theoretical foundations for mixing DES with SD simulation, and explores technical aspects and implementation details. The implications of this extent well beyond the supply chain field since both DES and SD have dozens of application areas including manufacturing, service systems and economics, social sciences, respectively. The paper is concluded with a discussion on the potential impact of the proposed approach including insights for practitioners, applicability of scientific results in industry and prerequisites for business process re-engineering.

«Supply chain management» concept essence and emergence

The essence and main stages of the «supply chain management» concept formation are analyzed in the article. The etymological basis and definitions characterizing the categories «supply chain» and «supply chain management» are studied. It is proposed to consider supply chain management as a strategic management system, a process of deepening integration, a systematic approach to management and a complex process of planning, creating and controlling material and information flows to meet the needs of consumers and increase the efficiency of the supply chain. It is noted that the main prerequisites for the development of the «supply chain management» modern concept are a number of factors, in particular, the consequences of global financial shocks and the decline in the growth rate of the world economy, crisis phenomena in the energy sector, the need to develop new approaches in marketing and logistics as a response to challenges and requirements of the present day. The four most important stages of the researched concept emergence are identified: the preliminary stage (prerequisites for the formation of the concept); emergence; formation of the «supply chain management» classical concept, as well as the modern stage of its development. The importance of high-quality and effective management of supply chains to ensure the competitiveness of the enterprise in the long-term perspective, as well as its commercial success, is emphasized. It is determined that the context of the concept development became the basis for the appearance of its modern modifications, in particular, Demand Chain Management (DCM), Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM), Sustainable Demand Chain Management (SDCM), Demand Driven Material Requirements Planning (DDMRP), which qualitatively complement the classical interpretation of this concept. It is concluded that all these modifications reflect the evolution and adaptation of the supply chain management approaches to changing market conditions and consumer demand aimed at ensuring the efficiency, sustainability and competitiveness of enterprises. The results of the study made it possible to generalize the retrospective basis and to analyze more deeply modern approaches to the management of the enterprise’s supply chain.

The interplay of Fintech, natural resources, globalization, and environmental sustainability in China: A BARDL investigation

Over the years, China has been able to continue its remarkable economic development. It has been a major player in international trade and can be considered a global factory. This has brought a series of economic benefits for the country with rising levels of income and standard of living. However, the rise in industrial activity has also led to a significant increase in pollution levels across the country. China has a share of more than 28% of the global pollution. The study analyzed the role of Fintech (FNT), Natural Resources (NTR) and Globalization (GLB) in achieving Environmental Sustainability (ENS) using BARDL approaches. The study's findings suggest that Fintech can be used as a gateway to achieve green finance and green investment in the Chinese economy. Similarly, the use and extraction of Natural resource use can be detrimental to the development of Environmental sustainability. The rise in globalization also increases economic activity and contributes towards faster exhaustion of natural resources, which would be negatively related to environmental sustainability. The recommendation of the study includes encouraging Fintech to promote green finance and green investment. The government should adopt a sustainable supply chain management approach in its procurement to ensure that the government can reduce their CO2 emissions and promote a greener image in the market.

A Value Modeling Approach for Product Development Processes and Supply Chain Management

This research presents a quantifiable value modeling approach for tracking and optimizing value addition at different stages of the product development process (PDP) and supply chain management (SCM). While there is a vast abundance of papers in the literature harping on the need to maximize the value, especially in lean thinking context, in PDP and SCM, there is a dearth of propositions on how to quantitatively measure and optimize value at each stage of product development and supply chain. This paper presents a multi-dimensional value modeling approach that incorporates parameters and variables from different stages of PDP and SCM by mathematically mapping them on to two macroscopic metrics, namely Product Information Evolution and Risk Reduction. These two metrics are in turn modeled by incorporating value attribute variables such as performance, risk, schedule, cost, form, fit, function and timeliness from different stages of PDP-SCM such as customer needs ideation, product functions, inventory management, logistics management and product delivery. The efficacy of the proposed model was tested by utilizing it to measure value additions at different stages of PDP-SCM as well as the total value addition for an ordinance disposal (OD) robot product family, once developed and supplied using traditional production method and once using lean production method, with the underlying axiom being the lean method will result in higher value. To ensure a fair and accurate comparison, both production methods used the proposed mathematical value model and worked toward maximizing total value using nonlinear programming. The results showed that lean PDP-SCM method added higher value at each of the stages as well as total value when compared to the traditional PDP-SCM method thus establishing the proposed value model as a viable mathematical way to measure value. While the proposed value model passed test of efficacy against the lean axiom, further research is needed to test it against other established axioms to establish it as a robust mathematical way to measure value in PDP-SCM.

Analysis of Supply Chain Management Solutions in Commodity Distribution Enterprises

At the present stage, at the level of supply chain management in the development of commodity distribution enterprises, supply chain management enterprises are located in the dominant position and have great rights in the overall supply chain management approach. If the commodity distribution enterprise holds strong influence, it will definitely cause the deterioration of the relationship between the specific commodity distribution enterprise and the supplier, thus invariably endangering the mutual gains. The strategic development plan of supply chain management of commodity distribution enterprises will be scientifically studied in this paper, and the current situation of supply chain management of commodity distribution enterprises will be introduced in detail, and the strategic development plan of optimized management will be formulated for the existing deficiencies to promote the stronger development of commodity distribution enterprises in the future. In general, improving the supply chain management countermeasures of commodity distribution enterprises, ensuring that commodity distribution enterprises and suppliers become excellent partners from supply chain management, analyzing and improving the development of strategic suppliers, and improving the relationship management between commodity distribution enterprises and suppliers will be beneficial to the economic benefits of commodity distribution enterprises.

Integrated Lean-Green Practices and Supply Chain Sustainability for Manufacturing SMEs: A Systematic Literature Review and Research Agenda

While it is understandable that lean and green practices are mostly sensible for large companies, it is also important to bring these practices to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as they are the dominant players in various industry sectors. SMEs are part of larger supply chains and contribute substantially to the economy, and thus perhaps there is a need for a workable model that attracts them to the lean and green practices. This study aims to find gaps in the lean-green research area that require development in future studies, especially for SMEs. This study uses an analysis of systematic literature reviews (SLR) and involves carefully selected articles from different databases or sources. This SLR was conducted in an effective and structured way using keywords entered into the search engine and found as many as 157 peer-reviewed journal articles, which were studied further using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The bibliometric analysis carried out made it possible to observe research trends on lean and green from 1996 to 2022. To find different research dimensions on lean and green topics, an in-depth evaluation was carried out on the linkage between lean, green, supply chain management, sustainability, and other management approaches. This study finds a lack of empirical research studies that comprehensively focus on investigating the impact of lean and green practices on the supply chain sustainability performance of manufacturing SMEs and involve all three aspects of the triple bottom line (3BL). Our review suggests such a robust and workable model for SMEs is not currently available. A limitation of our review is the use of keywords or “terms” to select articles, as well as the subjectivity of the researcher. Finally, we identify the research streams, criteria, findings, limitations, and enablers or challenges of 17 selected published journal papers on lean-green studies in SMEs and propose a number of research questions for future research directions.

Understanding public service supply chain management: a systematic literature review

AbstractThe complexity of delivering public services under dynamically changing operating conditions causes uncertainty in those processes. Economic and social crises, pandemics, natural and technological threats and local armed conflicts add more layers of complexity and force governments to seek ways to ensure the continuous supply of these services. Therefore, researchers indicate that a supply chain management approach could increase the efficiency and quality of public service implementation processes. However, the scattered research that exists on this topic occurs in limited areas of public governance. Therefore, this paper aims to understand the importance of supply chain management in public service delivery processes, develop the public service supply chain model, analyse the evolution of the research and identify research streams in this exploratory area. A systematic literature review based on the PRISMA methodology serves to achieve this purpose. The paper defines public service supply chain management as a synchronised process of co-creating value in public networks with its basis in relationship management, in which each actor can be both a supplier and an end-user. This paper also presents a bibliographic visualisation of research issues in public service supply chain management (PSSCM) and identifies eight major research streams in this area.

Vannamei (Litopenaeus vannamei) Frozen Shrimp Raw Material Inventory Management With Supply Chain Management Approach

Raw material inventory is one of the most expensive assets of the company, especially at national private companies in Banyuwangi is developing a frozen vannamei shrimp agro-industry with PND commercial products (Peeled and Devained). Companies often experience problems with losing sales profits if export demand tends to increase, because companies have not maximized their inventory management. So by using a three-level supply chain management approach, namely the level of finished products, the level of processing and the level of raw materials, it is important to ensure the availability of finished products at any time. Through this approach, the average amount of raw material needed for production of each PND product is PND 26/30 of 12,333.33 kg/month, 31/40 of 75,416.67 kg/month, 41/50. 28,750 kg/month, 51/60 42,250 kg/month, 61/70 21,083.33 kg/month, and 71/90 11,083.33 kg/month. so that the company's service level for PND finished products is above 100%, which is an average of 111,39%.

Industry 5.0 and Triple Bottom Line Approach in Supply Chain Management: The State-of-the-Art

Digital technologies could be key to solving several open issues in the context of supply chain management (SCM) and sustainable development. The purpose of this article is to investigate the linkage between digital technologies and sustainable practices in SCM. Through a systematic literature review, the article aims to identify which technologies favour sustainable emerging practices considering the triple bottom line (3BL) perspective. In particular, the following 11 technologies were considered: 3D printing, artificial intelligence, blockchain, computing, digital applications, geospatial technologies, Internet of Things, immersive environments, open and crowd-based platforms, proximity technologies and robotics. For the purpose of this research, 5011 peer-reviewed scientific articles were analysed and a comprehensive overview of the use of digital technologies in SCM to favour sustainable emerging practices was proposed. Therefore, four indices that measure the environmental, social, economic and total 3BL sustainability of each technology were used to assess sustainable emerging practices. This study could be useful for both academics and practitioners. For the former, it provides a comprehensive understanding of the application of digital technologies in sustainable emerging practices for SCM. It highlights potential research gaps by proposing scenarios of future research developments. For the latter, the article aims to identify opportunities for the implementation of digital technologies within own company to improve operations management and, at the same time, promote sustainable development.

this article examines the operations of DELL, a technology business that produces and sells PCs, servers, data storage devices, and networking equipment, are examined in this article. The article examines the significance of capacity management and inventory management, two critical components of a company's operations that can have a considerable impact on its profitability. Capacity management is concerned with matching supply and demand by planning and regulating supply or processing, whereas inventory management is concerned with having the right items in the right place at the right time. DELL has acquired a competitive advantage by implementing the build-to-order (BTO) approach, which allows the corporation to construct products only when a validated order is received, allowing consumers to receive personalized products on an individual basis.
 In conclusion, DELL's successful operations highlight the significance of excellent capacity and inventory management, supply chain management, and new business models. The use of the BTO model and an agile supply chain management approach by the company has allowed it to respond swiftly to changing market demands, supplying tailored products to specific clients. The company's inventory and data management operations have been optimized thanks to effective information exchange, vendor-managed inventory, and enterprise resource planning tools. To achieve long-term success in today's technology-driven company environment, cloud computing, and data security threats must be carefully considered.

Improving Supply Chain in the Automotive Industry With the Right Bill of Material Configuration

An effective supply chain management approach needs to be holistic and integrated, to avoid inefficiency between the echelons of the global chain. To achieve this goal, supply chain directors and decision makers are required to trade-off a centralized planning approach for a decentralized one. This paper develops a mixed approach where only the critical products are centrally planned, while leaving the non-critical ones to autonomous decisions at the local plants of a multi-echelon supply chain. To validate the benefits of the proposed planning model, a complex supply chain in the automotive industry is used as testbed, where a comparison between Top-Down (from finished products to raw materials) and Bottom-Up (from raw materials to finished products) approaches is also introduced. ANOVA test is performed on a full factorial design involving six criticality criteria and it suggests that the proposed selection model reduces the system size by 10-30% with respect to a fully centralized approach, and the Top-Down procedure leads to a critical sub-system smaller in size by about 5-10% in terms of number of products compared to the Bottom-Up one.

A mathematical modeling approach for supply chain management under disruption and operational uncertainty

AbstractIn this work, we proposed a two‐stage stochastic programming model for a four‐echelon supply chain problem considering possible disruptions at the nodes (supplier and facilities) as well as the connecting transportation modes and operational uncertainties in form of uncertain demands. The first stage decisions are supplier choice, capacity levels for manufacturing sites and warehouses, inventory levels, transportation modes selection, and shipment decisions for the certain periods, and the second stage anticipates the cost of meeting future demands subject to the first stage decision. Comparing the solution obtained for the two‐stage stochastic model with a multi‐period deterministic model shows that the stochastic model makes a better first stage decision to hedge against the future demand. This study demonstrates the managerial viability of the proposed model in decision making for supply chain network in which both disruption and operational uncertainties are accounted for.

Application of Information-Sharing for Resilient and Sustainable Food Delivery in Last-Mile Logistics

The growing food demand, the tendency for organic food, and the adaptation of the e-commerce business model require new food supply chain management approaches. On the one hand, 30% of the world’s produced food is wasted, and CO2 emissions are rapidly growing due to transport. On the other hand, the increasingly complex and dynamic environment is decreasing the effectiveness of food supply chains. Because of these trends, sustainability and resilience are becoming more relevant to food supply chains. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to propose a strategy based on information exchange to improve food quality and decrease the level of CO2 emission in last-mile deliveries of food products. To achieve this goal, an agent-based model of last-mile deliveries was developed. The model simulated traffic flow and traffic accidents as disturbances in the system while measuring the level of CO2 emission and food quality of the network. The simulation compares information sharing between all vehicles in the urban area and without information sharing in four scenarios of the food industry. In practice, information sharing is achieved by using connected vehicle technology. The use of information sharing between vehicles in last-mile delivery processes allows the development of a self-organizing system, which would adapt to disturbances and lead to the development of sustainability in the long run.
