The impact of supply chain information integration on supply chain coordination and organizational performance: does directionality matter?

This study evaluates how relationships, information characteristics, and supply chain information integration influence supply chain coordination and organizational performance in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment sector. Organizational performance includes operational performance and competitive performance. Data has been collected from 171 supplier-manufacturer dyads. Drawing on the coordination theory, this study theorizes that supply chain information integration and coordination can increase organizational performance. The structural equation modelling approach was used in data analysis. Generally, this study discloses that relationships and information characteristics positively influence supply chain information integration. Supply chain information integration directly influences supply chain coordination and competitive performance, whereas supply chain coordination is significantly related to operational and competitive performance. Moreover, supply chain coordination mediates the two relationships: supply chain information integration and operational performance and supply chain information integration and competitive performance. New insights are added by examining the relationships that connect the antecedents of supply chain information integration, supply chain information integration, and outcomes by looking at the focal manufacturing firm and its dyadic supplier partner separately. Separate examination in the dyad exhibits some identical and diverse outcomes. Furthermore, we suggest theoretical and practical implications for academics for theory building and managers.

Antecedent configurations toward supply chain resilience: The joint impact of supply chain integration and big data analytics capability

AbstractMany antecedents identified as essential to supply chain resilience (SCR) are often studied independently, without considering their synergistic effects. Based on a case study and resource orchestration theory, this article focuses on configurations of different antecedents regarding supply chain integration and big data analytics capability to develop proactive and reactive SCR. Using survey data from 277 Chinese manufacturing firms, we consider three dimensions of supply chain integration, information integration, operational integration and relational integration, and three dimensions of big data analytics capability, technical skills, managerial skills and data driven‐decision culture, and conduct fuzzy‐set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to explore antecedent configurations generating high proactive and reactive SCR. We find that multiple antecedent configurations can achieve high SCR and configurations for high proactive and reactive SCR are not identical, which may involve alternative effects across different antecedents. We further implement propensity score matching analysis and reveal that firms following these configurations for high SCR also have better economic and operational performance. Moreover, we check the robustness of findings by using secondary data and attributes analysis with machine learning. This article complements and extends existing SCR literature from the configurational perspective and provides practical insights for managers to build SCR.

Supply chain information integration, supply chain innovativeness and supply chain resilience among manufacturing firms in a developing context

Purpose The purpose of this study is to empirically explore the influence of supply chain information integration (SCII) on supply chain innovativeness (SCI) and supply chain resilience (SCRE).Design/methodology/approach Data from 403 manufacturing companies in Uganda were analyzed using Analysis of Moments of Structures version 27. Unmeasured common latent factors were used to minimize the bias of common methods.Findings SCII, SCI and SCRE have significant positive relationships. About 41% of SCII and SCRE are partially mediated by SCI.Research limitations/implications Considering variations in perception of SCRE, the cross-sectional nature of the study limits generalizability and transferability. Experiments and interviews are recommended to explore differences between firms in SCRE.Practical implications SCII and SCI capabilities buffer a firm’s SCRE.Originality/value This study establishes SCI as a mediator between SCII and SCRE by studying manufacturing firms in a developing country context.

Understanding green supply chain information integration on supply chain process ambidexterity: The mediator of dynamic ability and the moderator of leaders' networking ability.

Based on dynamic capability theory, this paper aims to explore the influence of green supply chain information integration (IT system integration and information sharing) on supply chain process ambidexterity (efficiency and flexibility) and expounds on the mediation mechanisms (supply chain dynamic capability) and the boundary condition (networking ability) between the two. Through the sample data test research model of 351 managers of manufacturing enterprises, it is found that information technology (IT) system integration can effectively promote the information sharing level of green supply chain enterprises. Supply chain dynamic capability partially mediates the influence of IT system integration and information sharing on supply chain process ambidexterity. Moreover, networking ability positively moderates the relationship between absorptive capacity, innovation capacity, and supply chain process ambidexterity, but does not play a significant role in the relationship between adaptive capacity and supply chain process ambidexterity.

Evaluating the guanxi and supply chain collaborative transportation management in manufacturing industries

Manufacturing firms can facilitate their shipping and logistics operations via cooperation by adopting collaborative supply chain transportation. Moreover, in Chinese culture, guanxi is considered crucial for fostering close partnerships. This study empirically examines the relationships between supply chain information integration (SCII), collaborative transportation management (CTM) through interaction and collaboration between trading partners and carriers (supply chain CTM), logistics performance, and guanxi in manufacturing industries. In total, 152 usable responses from the manufacturing industry were collected using a questionnaire. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to evaluate the hypotheses. The results indicate that SCII is significantly positively related to supply chain CTM and logistics performance. While supply chain CTM is significantly positively related to logistics performance for manufacturing firms, guanxi has a significant moderating effect between SCII and supply chain CTM. The moderating effect of guanxi on manufacturing firms' supply chain CTM and logistics performance was not found in this study.

Organizations face a number of decisions in designing their supply chains, which include the number, type and location of production facilities, distribution centers, retail facilities, service or technical support centers, supplier selection, supply chain information management and integration of all parts. into an efficient and effective system. Improper supply chain design can undermine an organization's strategy, lead to lower revenues, less competitiveness, market share and profits. As product lines and markets change or expand, the design or redesign of supply chains becomes an even more critical issue. The risks to which supply chains are exposed are different, and their functioning can be disrupted by a number of situations, which have had serious global consequences in the past. In addition to wars, nuclear accidents, cataclysmic earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, explosions, fires and tsunamis, epidemics of SARS, MERS, HIV, Ebola and Zika viruses, as well as the latest Covid-19 pandemic, have led to the knowledge that humanity is powerless in the face of such catastrophes. Regardless of the achievements in science, extensive and long-term medical research, epidemics (pandemics) have taken millions of lives and had negative effects on society as a whole, but also on the efficiency of business and supply chains. Past epidemics have attracted the attention of scientists and industry experts, resulting in the need to reengineer organizations and adjust supply chains to future challenges. In the context of the current pandemic, serious disturbances have been reported, so a large number of industries have had unprecedented consequences. Responses to such epidemics suggest that global supply chains need to be more integrated and digitally ready. Digitization of supply chains could improve the quality of responses to epidemic-related disorders by increasing their flexibility in such circumstances. This paper identifies the most important disruptions and measures to mitigate the consequences of these disruptions in global supply chains, as well as risk management in conditions of uncertainty.

Influence of Supply Chain Management Strategies on Performance of Medical Supply Chain Organisations in Kenya

Institutions within the medical supply sector have consistently faced substandard supply chain results because of failure of timely deliveries on the part of suppliers failing to quickly respond to deliver medical shipments. This indicates the procurement role having inadequacies as a key component of an organization since it does not deliver on maximized effectiveness and a reduction of costs based on poor supply chain management plans. A critical purpose of the study was the intention to identify influence of supply chain management strategies on performance of medical supply chain organisations in Kenya. More so, the analysis deals with the degree information integration impacts on Organization performance; to evaluate the impact of warehousing on performance; to examine the impact of outsourcing on performance; and to evaluate the influence of lean supply chain on performance of medical supply entities across Kenya. Direction will through be relying on the resource-based theory as well as the supply chain constraints principle. The analysis will adopt a descriptive study approach; with the targeted size comprising of 30 medical supply entities. The study participants included 2,529 staff of pharmaceutical supply chain entities within Kenya. Determination of the sample group was by Yamane’s concept that led to to a group of 345 participants. Accessing the participants was by stratified and simple random sampling approaches. Towards indicating dispersion and central tendency, standard deviation and respectively, with the inferential statistics being analysed by multiple regression and correlation analysis. The study findings reveal that performance of medical supply organizations in Kenya was significantly related with supply chain information integration (p < 0.05), warehousing (p < 0.05) and outsourcing. Despite this, the association among differentiation strategy and performance was insignificant at p > 0.05 but only significant at p <0.1). It was also found that while lean supply chain had a negative influence on performance (t = -.528, p >0.5) information integration, warehousing and outsourcing had positive influence on performance (information integration: t = 16.461, p <0.05; warehousing: t = 19.671, p <0.05; outsourcing: t = 15.528, p <0.05). The result of these outcomes is that the leadership across medical supply organizations in Kenya need to adopt information integration, warehousing, and outsourcing, which would positively contribute to performance. Medical supply organizations in Kenya should continue emphasizing on supply chain strategies. The outcomes of the study may assist organisations in drawing plans or improving existing strategies governing supply chain management across institutions.

Impact of Supply Chain Information Integration on Operational Performance of Pharmaceutical Firms: Mediating Role of Information Leakage

Aims: The aim of the current study is to investigate the mediating role of information leakage on the relationship between supply chain information integration and operational performance of pharmaceutical firms.
 Study Design: Survey approach was used. Primary cross-sectional data was collected from 151 firms.
 Place and Duration of Study: Unit of analysis was organizations; population of the study was managerial staff, territory managers, field managers, area managers of firms. Total 200 questionnaires were distributed and 150 completed questionnaires were used in the analysis. Data was collected from Pfizer, Abbot, GSK, Mark, and Sanofi Aventis in 2020-2021.
 Methodology: Partial Least Square Structural Modeling Equation (PLS-SEM) was used for analysis. Measurement model and structural model were developed and tested. Majority of the respondents were male followed by female staff members. All the respondents belong to managerial and administration side/positions.
 Results: results of measurement model consist of loadings >0.7, Cronbach alpha >0.7, AVE>0.5, CR>0.7, revealed that scales used in the current study are reliable and valid. Results of structural model revealed that there is direct impact of supply chain information integration on information leakage and operational performance as well as indirect effect of information leakage upon supply chain information integration and operational performance of pharmaceutical firms.
 Conclusion: it is concluded that in pharmaceutical firms there is leakage of information. Accidental information leakage has some consequences as well as intentional leak of information is more harmful. Firms have to strengthen their network in order to attain competitive advantage over their competitors and sustainable operational performance.

When Do IT Capabilities Create Value for Buyer Performance? The Moderating Effect of Social Capital on Supply Chain Information Integration

ABSTRACT This study investigates the effects of information technology (IT) integration and IT flexibility on information sharing and collaborative planning within supply chain. It also examines the moderating roles of shared value and supplier trustworthiness. The results indicate that IT integration is positively related to collaborative planning, while IT flexibility is positively related to information sharing and collaborative planning. Furthermore, shared value and supplier trustworthiness positively moderate the effects of IT integration and IT flexibility.

Proactive and reactive flexibility: How does flexibility mediate the link between supply chain information integration and performance?

To maintain competitiveness, businesses need to upgrade their operational performance and financial performance more efficiently and effectively in order to control uncertainty and costs. The purposes of the study are to (1) investigate the relationship between three dimensions, namely integration, flexibility, and performance; and (2) examine the mediating effects of supply chain flexibility. This research collected annual reports from the Indonesian basic and chemical industry from 2014 to 2017. Content analysis was used to extract information from companies’ annual reports, and hierarchical analysis examined the hypotheses. The results show that external information integration positively influences both reactive and proactive flexibility. Furthermore, proactive flexibility significantly affects financial performance and operational performance. Moreover, both reactive and proactive flexibility have positive mediating effects on the connection between external information integration and operational performance. Lastly, reactive flexibility positively mediates external information integration’s effect on financial performance. As the market has been becoming more competitive, this study provides important insights for decision-makers. This study contributes to the knowledge of the Indonesian basic and chemical supply chain by considering both financial and operational performance, especially as these performance indexes measure different dimensions.

How Foreign and Domestic Firms Differ in Leveraging IT-Enabled Supply Chain Information Integration in BOP Markets: The Role of Supplier and Client Business Collaboration

Although attractive to foreign and domestic firms, bottom-of-pyramid (BOP) markets pose unique challenges. Research suggests that IT-enabled supply chain information integration (IT-SCII) helps firms collaborate with suppliers and clients in broad business activities, operate in a unique context, and overcome salient challenges in BOP markets. Anecdotal evidence and research suggest that foreign and domestic firms have differing advantages: While foreign firms have considerable global experience, domestic firms have substantial local market knowledge. We draw on the ownership-location-internalization (OLI) framework to theorize that domestic and foreign firms leverage IT-SCII differently because of their differing ownership-based advantages in BOP markets. We hypothesize that the influence of IT-SCII on client business collaboration and the influence of client business collaboration on firm performance are stronger for domestic firms than for foreign firms. Conversely, we hypothesize that the influence of IT-SCII on supplier business collaboration and the influence of supplier business collaboration on firm performance are stronger for foreign firms than for domestic firms. We test our hypotheses in the automotive parts manufacturing BOP market comprising foreign and domestic firms in India. Partial least squares and econometric analyses of 172 firms reveal broad support for our hypotheses. By incorporating the OLI framework into IT-enabled supply chain literature, our study contributes to theory and practice by highlighting that IT-SCII has differing implications for foreign and domestic firms in BOP markets.

Supply chain information integration and its impact on the operational performance of manufacturing firms in Malaysia

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of Supply Chain Information Integration (SCII) on the Operational Performance of manufacturing firms in Malaysia considering the role of information leakage. Design/methodology/approachTo test the model developed, we conducted an online questionnaire survey with Malaysian manufacturing companies drawn from the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers directory of 2018. Out of the 400 questionnaires sent out to the manufacturing companies, 144 useable responses were received giving a response rate of 36 %. The data were analyzed using SmartPLS, a second-generation statistical tool. FindingsThe findings of this study showed that information quality, information security, and information technology (IT) had a positive effect on SCII with an explanatory power of 47.2 % while SCII, in turn, had a positive effect on operational performance explaining 17% of the variance. Intentional information leakage (IIL) moderated the relationship between SCII and operational performance, whereas accidental information leakage did not moderate the same relationship. Practical implicationsThis study provides insights into difficulties faced when implementing SCII, particularly by medium and large manufacturing companies in Malaysia. It helps identify appropriate strategies that can guide the management in its effort to improve performance by SCII. Originality/valueThis research is arguably the first study that simultaneously investigates the effect of information quality, IT, and information security on SCII and the moderating effect of information leakage on the relationships between SCII and operational performance. The results of this study indicate that information security has the largest impact on SCII, followed by IT, and information quality. Furthermore, IIL as a negative aspect of information integration may deprive the strength of the relationship between SCII and operational performance.

Supply Chain Information Integration and Firm Performance: Are Explorative and Exploitative IT Capabilities Complementary or Substitutive?

ABSTRACTDrawing upon organizational information processing theory, we investigate how explorative and exploitative information technology (IT) capabilities independently and interdependently moderate the relationship between supply chain information integration and firm performance. Data collected from 215 firms in China reveal that explorative IT capability positively moderates the relationship between information sharing and firm performance but exerts no moderating effect on the association between collaborative planning and firm performance. By contrast, exploitative IT capability positively moderates the impact of collaborative planning but negatively moderates the influence of information sharing on firm performance. Furthermore, building upon the ambidexterity perspective, we develop and test a three‐way interaction hypothesis that explorative and exploitative IT capabilities would interdependently moderate the relationship between supply chain information integration and firm performance. Our results indicate that explorative and exploitative IT capabilities are complementory in moderating the link between collaborative planning and firm performance but substitutive in moderating the relationship between information sharing and firm performance. By integrating insights from both information systems and operations management, our study thus provides an in‐depth understanding on how and when IT business value can be created in supply chain information integration context.

The Effects of Justice and Top Management Beliefs and Participation: An Exploratory Study in the Context of Digital Supply Chain Management

Drawing on justice theory and upper echelons perspective, this study develops and tests an integrative model linking justice to the implementation of IT-enabled supply chain information integration (IeSCII) through the top management. Specifically, the study investigates the effects of the three facets of justice—distributive, procedural, and interactional justice—on the two dimensions of IeSCII (information sharing and collaborative planning), and examines the mediating influences of top management beliefs (TMB) and top management participation (TMP) in these relationships. Using structural equation modeling to analyze data collected from 190 firms in China, the study documents that interactional justice positively affects both TMB and TMP, while procedural justice positively affects TMB (but not TMP) in the IeSCII implementation process. In contrast, distributive justice is not significantly related to either TMB or TMP, but is positively associated with information sharing. The results also show that procedural justice positively affects TMB, which then positively affects TMP in IeSCII. Furthermore, the study finds significant mediating effects of TMB and TMP in the relationship between interactional justice and IeSCII. The theoretical and managerial implications of this study are discussed.

KEY FACTORS FOR INFORMATION INTEGRATION IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN – MEASUREMENT, TECHNOLOGY AND INFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS

This paper aims to identify key factors related to information management and integration in the supply chain (SC). The initial set of factors was identified in the literature, namely, information quality and content, performance metrics, and information technologies. The construct was then tested empirically using the sample of 200 Polish companies. Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI) were based on a structured questionnaire, then, data exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed. The conducted EFA determined four main factors for information management and integration in the supply chain that should be considered, namely, information characteristics, ICT used in information management, the scope of information and shared performance metrics. Results confirmed the importance of some of the factors related to information management in the supply chain, however having a different set of variables than indicated in the literature. Additionally, research introduced new factors, namely, information characteristics and the scope of shared information, instead of information quality and information content. Moreover, findings suggested that the key role in SC information integration was related to established technologies, focused on transport, customer, and ERP management, while emerging technologies, such as cloud computing and data mining were not of the top importance among the surveyed companies.

Supply chain information integration, flexibility, and operational performance

PurposeSupply chain flexibility is crucial for firms to respond to uncertain circumstances caused by environmental factors, such as the diversity of customer demands, problems of product safety, and adjustments of industrial policies. To investigate the approach to enhance supply chain flexibility, the purpose of this paper is to propose that both internal and external information integration contribute to reactive and proactive supply chain flexibilities, which elicit high operational performance.Design/methodology/approachUsing a sample of 84 food companies that have been listed three years in China and content analysis based on their annual reports, evidence was collected to test the hypotheses through hierarchical regressions.FindingsThe results reveal that external information integration results in both reactive and proactive flexibilities, which further improve operational performance. Internal information integration positively affects both reactive and proactive flexibilities, but its mediating role was not determined in the study.Originality/valueThe research provides insights into how supply chain flexibility mediates the effect of supply chain information integration on operational performance in the context of the Chinese food industry.

Antecedents and consequences of supply chain information integration: a resource-based view

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the antecedents of supply chain information integration (SCII) and their consequences on company performance from the perspective of resource-based view (RBV).Design/methodology/approachBased on empirical survey data collected from 202 Australian manufacturers, this study examines the effects of strategic supply chain relationship (SCR) and supply chain technology (SCT) internalization on external and internal information integration (II) and the effects of external and internal II on operational (operational efficiency and service quality) and financial performance. Structural equation modeling and the maximum-likelihood estimation methods are used to test the proposed relationships.FindingsThe results indicate that both strategic SCR and SCT internalization are positively related to external and internal II. Moreover, strategic SCR has a stronger positive relationship with external II than with internal II, and SCT internalization has a stronger positive relationship with internal II than with external II. Internal II is positively related only to service quality, and external II is positively related only to operational efficiency. Both operational efficiency and service quality are positively related to financial performance.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the SCII literature and provides significant managerial implications for manufacturers to leverage their supply chain resources and capabilities by establishing a resources-capabilities-performance framework for the antecedents and consequences of SCII.

The performance of contingencies of supply chain information integration: The roles of product and market complexity

Although information integration is generally considered beneficial for supply chain management, the performance of supply chain information integration is found with mixed results in both practices and the extant literature. Based on the organizational information processing theory, this study aims to show how the contextual factors pertaining to product and market complexity moderate the relationship of supply chain information integration with financial and operational performance outcomes. Using survey data collected from 188 wholesale trading firms, we found that the extent to which supply chain information integration has a positive impact on business performance is contingent on the level of product and market complexity. Specifically, supply chain information integration facilitates greater performance improvements when it serves less complex products or is operated under a highly complex market environment. The study findings provide insights to managers and advance theoretical development by providing empirical evidence that supply chain information integration is helpful for mitigating uncertainties in supply chain management and the performance contingencies of such integration on the two contextual factors.

EVALUATION OF INFORMATION INTEGRATION IN SUPPLY CHAIN: A CASE STUDY OF AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR

Abstract This paper presents an exploratory research that analyses the level of information integration of automotive industry of Campinas region, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. It considers the availability of adequate Information Technology, the extension and the intensity of information exchange among enterprises. Groups are identified through hierarchical cluster analysis taking into account four different indicators: perception of the Information Technology availability, extension of information exchange and intensity of information exchange with supplier and costumers. The main conclusions are: does not exist correlation among the four indicators, and availability of Information Technology is necessary but not a sufficient condition for promoting supply chain information integration.
