Intensive Swift and LCO Monitoring of PG 1302–102: Active Galactic Nucleus Disk Reverberation Mapping of a Supermassive Black Hole Binary Candidate

We present an intensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign of the quasar PG 1302−102 with Swift and the Las Cumbres Observatory network telescopes. At z ∼ 0.3, it tests the limits of the reverberation mapping (RM) technique in probing the accretion disk around a supermassive black hole (SMBH) and extends the parameter space to high masses and high accretion rates. This is also the first time the RM technique has been applied to test disk structures predicted in the SMBH binary model that has been suggested for this source. PG 1302−102 was observed at a ∼daily cadence for ∼9 months in 14 bands spanning from X-ray to UV and optical wavelengths, and it shows moderate to significant levels of variability correlated between wavelengths. We measure the interband time lags, which are consistent with a τ ∝ λ 4/3 relation as expected from standard disk reprocessing, albeit with large uncertainties. The disk size implied by the lag spectrum is consistent with the expected disk size for its black hole mass within uncertainties. While the source resembles other reverberation-mapped active galactic nuclei in many respects, and we do not find evidence supporting the prevalent hypothesis that it hosts an SMBH binary, we demonstrate the feasibility of studying SMBH binaries from this novel angle and suggest possibilities for the LSST Deep Drilling Fields.

Follow-up on the Supermassive Black Hole Binary Candidate J1048+7143: Successful Prediction of the Next Gamma-Ray Flare and Refined Binary Parameters in the Framework of the Jet Precession Model

Analyzing single-dish and very long baseline interferometry radio, as well as Fermi Large Area Telescope γ-ray observations, we explained the three major flares in the γ-ray light curve of FSRQ J1048+7143 with the spin–orbit precession of the dominant mass black hole in a supermassive black hole binary system. Here, we report on the detection of a fourth γ-ray flare from J1048+7143, appearing in the time interval that was predicted in our previous work. Including this new flare, we constrained the mass ratio into a narrow range of 0.062 < q < 0.088, and consequently we were able to further constrain the parameters of the hypothetical supermassive binary black hole at the heart of J1048+7143. We predict the occurrence of the fifth major γ-ray flare that would appear only if the jet will still lay close to our line of sight. The fourth major γ-ray flare also shows the two-subflare structure, further strengthening our scenario in which the occurrence of the subflares is the signature of the precession of a spine–sheath jet structure that quasiperiodically interacts with a proton target, e.g., clouds in the broad-line region.

Panic at the ISCO: Time-varying Double-peaked Broad Lines from Evolving Accretion Disks Are Common among Optically Variable AGNs

About 3%–10% of Type I active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have double-peaked broad Balmer lines in their optical spectra originating from the motion of gas in their accretion disk. Double-peaked profiles arise not only in AGNs, but occasionally appear during optical flares from tidal disruption events and changing-state AGNs. In this paper, we identify 250 double-peaked emitters (DPEs) among a parent sample of optically variable broad-line AGNs in the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey, corresponding to a DPE fraction of 19%. We model spectra of the broad Hα emission-line regions and provide a catalog of the fitted accretion disk properties for the 250 DPEs. Analysis of power spectra derived from the 5 yr ZTF light curves finds that DPE light curves have similar amplitudes and power-law indices to other broad-line AGNs. Follow-up spectroscopy of 12 DPEs reveals that ∼50% display significant changes in the relative strengths of their red and blue peaks over long 10–20 yr timescales, indicating that broad-line profile changes arising from spiral arm or hotspot rotation are common among optically variable DPEs. Analysis of the accretion disk parameters derived from spectroscopic modeling provides evidence that DPEs are not in a special accretion state, but are simply normal broad-line AGNs viewed under the right conditions for the accretion disk to be easily visible. We include inspiraling supermassive black hole binary candidate SDSSJ1430+2303 in our analysis, and discuss how its photometric and spectroscopic variability is consistent with the disk-emitting AGN population in the ZTF survey.

Uncovering Hidden Massive Black Hole Companions with Tidal Disruption Events

Dynamical perturbations from supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries can increase the rates of tidal disruption events (TDEs). However, most previous work focuses on TDEs from the heavier black hole in the SMBH binary (SMBHB) system. In this work, we focus on the lighter black holes in SMBHB systems and show that they can experience a similarly dramatic increase in their TDE rate due to perturbations from a more massive companion. While the increase in TDEs around the more massive black hole is mostly due to chaotic orbital perturbations, we find that, around the smaller black hole, the eccentric Kozai–Lidov mechanism is dominant and capable of producing a comparably large number of TDEs. In this scenario, the mass derived from the light curve and spectra of TDEs caused by the lighter SMBH companion is expected to be significantly smaller than the SMBH mass estimated from galaxy scaling relations, which are dominated by the more massive companion. This apparent inconsistency can help find SMBHB candidates that are not currently accreting as active galactic nuclei and that are at separations too small for them to be resolved as two distinct sources. In the most extreme cases, these TDEs provide us with the exciting opportunity to study SMBHBs in galaxies where the primary SMBH is too massive to disrupt Sun-like stars.

Observational Evidence of a Centi-parsec Supermassive Black Hole Binary Existing in the Nearby Galaxy M81

Studying a centi-parsec supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) would allow us to explore a new parameter space in active galactic nuclei, and these objects are also potential sources of gravitational waves. We report evidence that an SMBHB with an orbital period of ∼30 yr may be resident in the nearby galactic nucleus M81. This orbital period and the known mass of M81 imply an orbital separation of ∼0.02 pc. The jet emanating from the primary black hole showed a short period of jet wobbling at ∼16.7 yr, superposing a long-term precession at a timescale of several hundred years. Periodic radio and X-ray outbursts were also found two times per orbital period, which could be explained by a double-peaked mass accretion rate variation per binary orbit. If confirmed, M81 would be one of the closest SMBHB candidates, providing a rare opportunity to study the final parsec problem.

Shock-driven periodic variability in a low-mass-ratio supermassive black hole binary

ABSTRACT We investigate the time-varying electromagnetic emission of a low-mass-ratio supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) embedded in a circumprimary disc, with a particular interest in variability of shocks driven by the binary. We perform a 2D, locally isothermal hydrodynamics simulation of an SMBHB with mass ratio q = 0.01 and separation a = 100 Rg, using a physically self-consistent steady disc model. We estimate the electromagnetic variability from the system by monitoring accretion on to the secondary and using an artificial viscosity scheme to capture shocks and monitor the energy dissipated. The SMBHB produces a wide, eccentric gap in the disc, previously only observed for larger mass ratios, which we attribute to our disc model being much thinner (H/R ≈ 0.01 near the secondary) than is typical of previous works. The eccentric gap drives periodic accretion on to the secondary SMBH on a time-scale matching the orbital period of the binary, $t_{\rm {bin}}\approx 0.1\,\,\rm {yr}$, implying that the variable accretion regime of the SMBHB parameter space extends to lower mass ratios than previously established. Shocks driven by the binary are periodic, with a period matching the orbital period, and the shocks are correlated with the accretion rate, with peaks in the shock luminosity lagging peaks in the accretion rate by 0.43 tbin. We propose that the correlation of these quantities represents a useful identifier of SMBHB candidates, via observations of correlated variability in X-ray and ultraviolet monitoring of active galactic nuclei, rather than single-waveband periodicity alone.

Description and Application of the Surfing Effect

The standard technique for very low-frequency gravitational wave detection is mainly based on searching for a specific spatial correlation in the variation of the times of arrival of the radio pulses emitted by millisecond pulsars with respect to a timing model. This spatial correlation, which in the case of the gravitational wave background must have the form described by the Hellings and Downs function, has not yet been observed. Therefore, despite the numerous hints of a common red noise in the timing residuals of many millisecond pulsars compatible with that expected for the gravitational wave background, its detection has not yet been achieved. By now, the reason is not completely clear and, from some recent works, the urgency to adopt new detection techniques, possibly complementary to the standard one, is emerging clearly. Of course, this demand also applies to the detection of continuous gravitational waves emitted by supermassive black hole binaries populating the Universe. In the latter case, important information could, in principle, emerge from the millisecond pulsars considered individually in a single-pulsar search of continuous GWs. In this context, the surfing effect can then be exploited, helping to select the best pulsars to carry out such analysis. This paper aims to clarify when the surfing effect occurs and describe it exhaustively. A possible application to the case of the supermassive black hole binary candidate PKS 2131–021 and millisecond pulsar J2145–0750 is also analyzed.

X-ray view of a merging supermassive black hole binary candidate SDSS J1430+2303: Results from the first ∼200 days of observations

Context. Recently we discovered an unprecedented supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) candidate in the nearby Seyfert galaxy SDSS J1430+2303, which is predicted to merge within three years. X-ray spectroscopy may bring unique kinematic evidence for the last inspiraling stage, when the binary is too close to allow each of them to hold an individual broad line region. Aims. We try to confirm the unique SMBHB merger event and understand the associated high-energy processes from a comprehensive X-ray view. Methods. We observed SDSS J1430+2303 with XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, Chandra, and Swift spanning the first ∼200 days since its discovery. Results. X-ray variability, up to a factor of 7, has been detected on a timescale of a few days. The broadband spectrum from 0.2–70 keV can be well fitted with a model consisting of a power law and a relativistic reflection covered by a warm absorber. The properties of the warm absorber changed dramatically, for example, with a decrease in the line-of-sight velocity from ∼0.2c to ∼0.02c, between the two XMM-Newton observations separated by only 19 days, which can be naturally understood in the context of the SMBHB; although, the clumpy wind scenario cannot be completely excluded. Broad Fe Kα emission has been robustly detected, though its velocity shift or profile change is not yet measurable. Further longer X-ray observations are highly encouraged to detect the expected orbital motion of the binary.

VLBI imaging of the pre-coalescence SMBHB candidate SDSS J143016.05+230344.4

Context. Recently, SDSS J143016.05+230344.4 (J1430+2303) was reported to be a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) in the final coalescence phase. It is probably the first SMBHB coalescence event observable in human history. Radio observations of J1430+2303 before and after coalescence will provide a unique diagnosis of the energetics and environment of the SMBHB. Aims. We explore the radio emission from the galactic nucleus region that is closely related to the current X-ray and optical activities and helps to understand the state of black hole accretion and outflow before coalescence. Methods. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging is the only method that offers milli-arcsecond-level high resolution that can exclude the contamination by diffuse emission on galactic scales. We observed J1430+2303 with the European VLBI Network at 1.7 GHz and with the Very Long Baseline Array at 1.6 and 4.9 GHz in late February and early March 2022. Results. A compact component is detected in all three VLBI images. It has a brightness temperature of &gt; 108 K, an unresolved morphology with a size &lt; 0.8 pc, and a flat radio spectrum. These observational features are inconsistent with large opening-angle outflows or winds, but indicate that this compact component might be a jet or a corona. Nearly 60% of the emission is resolved by VLBI and may come from remnant lobes of previous radio activities, the outer layers of a structured jet, or shocks formed by the disc winds in the narrow line region. Conclusions. Current VLBI images do not yet show signs of radio outbursts. Our observations provide pre-coalescence radio data that are an important reference for future comparative studies with the post-merger. In particular, further resolving the jet will pave the way for probing the dynamical features associated with inspiralling binary black holes.

The Unanticipated Phenomenology of the Blazar PKS 2131–021: A Unique Supermassive Black Hole Binary Candidate

Abstract Most large galaxies host supermassive black holes in their nuclei and are subject to mergers, which can produce a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB), and hence periodic signatures due to orbital motion. We report unique periodic radio flux density variations in the blazar PKS 2131−021, which strongly suggest an SMBHB with an orbital separation of ∼0.001–0.01 pc. Our 45.1 yr radio light curve shows two epochs of strong sinusoidal variation with the same period and phase to within ≲2% and ∼10%, respectively, straddling a 20 yr period when this variation was absent. Our simulated light curves accurately reproduce the “red noise” of this object, and Lomb–Scargle, weighted wavelet Z-transform and least-squares sine-wave analyses demonstrate conclusively, at the 4.6σ significance level, that the periodicity in this object is not due to random fluctuations in flux density. The observed period translates to 2.082 ± 0.003 yr in the rest frame at the z = 1.285 redshift of PKS 2131−021. The periodic variation in PKS 2131−021 is remarkably sinusoidal. We present a model in which orbital motion, combined with the strong Doppler boosting of the approaching relativistic jet, produces a sine-wave modulation in the flux density that easily fits the observations. Given the rapidly developing field of gravitational-wave experiments with pulsar timing arrays, closer counterparts to PKS 2131−021 and searches using the techniques we have developed are strongly motivated. These results constitute a compelling demonstration that the phenomenology, not the theory, must provide the lead in this field.

Merging timescale for the supermassive black hole binary in interacting galaxy NGC 6240

Context. One of the mechanisms leading to the creation of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) is the so-called hierarchical merging scenario. Central SMBHs at the final phase of interacting and coalescing host-galaxies are observed as SMBH binary (SMBHB) candidates at different separations from hundreds of parsecs to megaparsecs. Aims. Today one of the strongest SMBHB candidates is the ultraluminous infrared galaxy NGC 6240 which was spatially and spectroscopically resolved in X-rays by Chandra. Dynamical calculation of central SMBHBs merging in a dense stellar environment allows us to retrace their evolution from kiloparsec to megaparsec scales. The main goal of our dynamical modeling was to reach the final, gravitational wave emission regime for the model BHs. Methods. We present direct N-body simulations with up to one million particles and relativistic post-Newtonian corrections for the SMBH particles up to 3.5 post-Newtonian terms. Results. Generally speaking, the set of initial physical conditions can strongly affect our merging time estimations. However, within a certain range of our parameters, we do not find any strong correlation between merging time and BH-to-BH mass or BH-to-bulge mass ratios. Varying the numerical parameters (like particle number – N) does not significantly change the merging time limits. From our 20 models, we find an upper limit on the merging time for central SMBHBs of less than ∼55 Myr. This precise number is only valid for our combination of initial mass ratios. Conclusions. Further detailed research of rare dual and multiple BHs in dense stellar environments (based on observational data) could clarify the dynamical co-evolution of central BHs and their host-galaxies.

Pulsar Timing Array Constraints on the Merger Timescale of Subparsec Supermassive Black Hole Binary Candidates

Abstract We estimate the merger timescale of spectroscopically selected, subparsec supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) candidates by comparing their expected contribution to the gravitational-wave background (GWB) with the sensitivity of current pulsar timing array (PTA) experiments and in particular, with the latest upper limit placed by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves. We find that the average timescale to coalescence of such SMBHBs is yr, assuming that their orbital evolution in the PTA frequency band is driven by emission of gravitational waves. If some fraction of SMBHBs do not reside in spectroscopically detected active galaxies, and their incidence in active and inactive galaxies is similar, then the merger timescale could be ∼10 times longer, yr. These limits are consistent with the range of timescales predicted by theoretical models and imply that all the SMBHB candidates in our spectroscopic sample could be binaries without violating the observational constraints on the GWB. This result illustrates the power of the multimessenger approach, facilitated by the PTAs, in providing an independent statistical test of the nature of SMBHB candidates discovered in electromagnetic searches.

The BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey. XVIII. Searching for Supermassive Black Hole Binaries in X-Rays

Abstract Theory predicts that a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) could be observed as a luminous active galactic nucleus (AGN) that periodically varies on the order of its orbital timescale. In X-rays, periodic variations could be caused by mechanisms including relativistic Doppler boosting and shocks. Here we present the first systematic search for periodic AGNs using 941 hard X-ray light curves (14–195 keV) from the first 105 months of the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) survey (2004–2013). We do not find evidence for periodic AGNs in Swift-BAT, including the previously reported SMBHB candidate MCG+11−11−032. We find that the null detection is consistent with the combination of the upper-limit binary population in AGNs in our adopted model, their expected periodic variability amplitudes, and the BAT survey characteristics. We have also investigated the detectability of SMBHBs against normal AGN X-ray variability in the context of the extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) survey. Under our assumptions of a binary population and the periodic signals they produce, which have long periods of hundreds of days, up to 13% true periodic binaries can be robustly distinguished from normal variable AGNs with the ideal uniform sampling. However, we demonstrate that realistic eROSITA sampling is likely to be insensitive to long-period binaries because longer observing gaps reduce their detectability. In contrast, large observing gaps do not diminish the prospect of detecting binaries of short, few-day periods, as 19% can be successfully recovered, the vast majority of which can be identified by the first half of the survey.

Supermassive Black Hole Binary Candidates from the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey

Abstract We present a systematic search for periodically varying quasar and supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) candidates in the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey (MDS). From ∼9000 color-selected quasars in an ∼50 °2 sky area, we initially identify 26 candidates with more than 1.5 cycles of variation. We extend the baseline of observations via our imaging campaign with the Discovery Channel Telescope and the Las Cumbres Observatory network and reevaluate the candidates using a more rigorous, maximum likelihood method. Using a range of statistical criteria and assuming the damped random walk model for normal quasar variability, we identify one statistically significant periodic candidate. We also investigate the capabilities of detecting SMBHBs with the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope using our study with MDS as a benchmark and explore any complementary multiwavelength evidence for SMBHBs in our sample.

Relativistic Aspects of Accreting Supermassive Black Hole Binaries in Their Natural Habitat: A Review

In this review a summary is given on recent theoretical work, on understanding accreting supermassive black hole binaries in the gravitational wave (GW)-driven regime. A particular focus is given to theoretical predictions of properties of disks and jets in these systems during the gravitational wave driven phase. Since a previous review by Schnittman 2013, which focussed on Newtonian aspects of the problem, various relativistic aspects have been studied. In this review we provide an update on these relativistic aspects. Further, a perspective is given on recent observational developments that have seen a surge in the number of proposed supermassive black hole binary candidates. The prospect of bringing theoretical and observational efforts closer together makes this an exciting field of research for years to come.

Jet-powered Outflows in Supermassive Black Hole Binary Candidate SDSS J1048+0055

Abstract The search and study of close pairs of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) is important in the study of galaxy mergers that can possibly trigger active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity, and in the context of their evolution into the gravitational wave emitting regime. The quasar SDSS J1048+0055 was identified as an SMBH binary (SMBHB) candidate based on the observed double-peaked [O iii] λλ4959, 5007 emission lines and two distinct radio components separated by ∼20 pc (Zhou et al. 2004). To ascertain the binary nature of this source, we analyzed multifrequency, multiepoch very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) data to investigate its parsec-scale radio properties. The source shows double components with the western feature being brighter than the eastern one. This brighter component has a brightness temperature of ∼1010 K, a spectral index of α = −0.09 ± 0.09 (flat), and is indicative of mildly relativistic beaming. In contrast, the faint component has a lower brightness temperature of ∼108−9 K and a steep spectrum. These clues are consistent with a core–jet structure; moreover, the apparent separation speed between the two components is much higher than the expected orbital motion in a binary SMBH. Thus the present study excludes the association of the two VLBI components with the cores of an SMBHB; though, the SMBHB possibility (e.g., a pair of radio-loud and radio-quiet AGNs) is not fully ruled out. In the single AGN scenario, the double-peaked optical emission lines can originate from the jet interacting with the narrow-line region as indicated by a change in the jet direction at ∼140 pc.

The Optical Variability of Supermassive Black Hole Binary Candidate PG 1302–102: Periodicity and Perturbation in the Light Curve

Abstract The photometric light curve of PG 1302–102 shows periodic variability, which makes this object one of the most plausible supermassive black hole binary candidates. Interestingly, the most recent study of its updated optical light curve reports a decrease in the significance of periodicity, which may suggest that the binary model is less favorable. Here we model the PG 1302–102 light curve, spanning almost 20 yr, with a supermassive black hole binary system in which a perturbation in the accretion disk of a more massive component is present. Our model reproduces well the observed light curve, with a slight perturbation of a sinusoidal feature, and predicts that a slightly larger period than previously reported, of about 1899 days, could arise owing to a cold spot in the disk of a more massive component of a close, unequal-mass ( ) black hole binary system. The light curve resembles the pattern of a sinusoid-like shape within a few years, which could be confirmed by future observations. In addition, using our hybrid method for periodicity detection, we show that the periods in the observed (1972 ± 254 days) and modeled (1873 ± 250 days) light curves are within 1σ, which is also consistent with our physical model prediction and with previous findings. Thus, both the periodic nature and its slight fluctuation of the light curve of PG 1302–102 are evident from our physical model and confirmed by the hybrid method for periodicity detection.

Double tidal disruption events with supermassive black hole binaries

The two stars of stellar binaries can be tidally disrupted by supermassive black holes (SMBHs) or supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) in sequence. In this contribution, we review our recent study about double tidal disruption events (DTDEs) with SMBHBs. With the help of scattering experiments, we find that the time interval between two successive tidal disruption events (TDEs) depend on the semimajor axis of incident stellar binaries. For stellar binaries with 1 M⊙ for each companion star and a semimajor axis less than 100 au, the maximum time interval is about 150 days when the stellar binary is tidally disrupted by an SMBH. However, for an SMBHB, the time intervals can be very large, and the maximum can exceed 10,000 years. Moreover, we also compare the probabilities of a DTDE with the time interval larger than 150 days by the SMBHB and of two separate TDEs by the SMBH with the same time interval. We find that, for the time interval of 150 days to 15 years, the probability of DTDEs by the SMBHB with a large mass ratio (i.e., qbhb ≳ 0.1) is larger than that of the SMBH scenario. Finally, according to our results, we suggest that DTDEs with the time interval of 150 days to 15 years could be useful tools for finding SMBHB candidates with the mass ratio qbhb ≳ 0.1 at galactic centers.

Did ASAS-SN Kill the Supermassive Black Hole Binary Candidate PG1302-102?

Abstract Graham et al. reported a periodically varying quasar and supermassive black hole binary candidate, PG1302-102 (hereafter PG1302), which was discovered in the Catalina Real-time Transient Survey (CRTS). Its combined Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) and CRTS optical light curve is well fitted to a sinusoid of an observed period of ≈1884 days and well modeled by the relativistic Doppler boosting of the secondary mini-disk. However, the LINEAR+CRTS light curve from MJD ≈52,700 to MJD ≈56,400 covers only ∼2 cycles of periodic variation, which is a short baseline that can be highly susceptible to normal, stochastic quasar variability. In this Letter, we present a reanalysis of PG1302 using the latest light curve from the All-sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), which extends the observational baseline to the present day (MJD ≈58,200), and adopting a maximum likelihood method that searches for a periodic component in addition to stochastic quasar variability. When the ASAS-SN data are combined with the previous LINEAR+CRTS data, the evidence for periodicity decreases. For genuine periodicity one would expect that additional data would strengthen the evidence, so the decrease in significance may be an indication that the binary model is disfavored.

Testing the Binary Hypothesis: Pulsar Timing Constraints on Supermassive Black Hole Binary Candidates

Abstract The advent of time domain astronomy is revolutionizing our understanding of the universe. Programs such as the Catalina Real-time Transient Survey (CRTS) or the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) surveyed millions of objects for several years, allowing variability studies on large statistical samples. The inspection of ≈250 k quasars in CRTS resulted in a catalog of 111 potentially periodic sources, put forward as supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) candidates. A similar investigation on PTF data yielded 33 candidates from a sample of ≈35 k quasars. Working under the SMBHB hypothesis, we compute the implied SMBHB merger rate and we use it to construct the expected gravitational wave background (GWB) at nano-Hz frequencies, probed by pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). After correcting for incompleteness and assuming virial mass estimates, we find that the GWB implied by the CRTS sample exceeds the current most stringent PTA upper limits by almost an order of magnitude. After further correcting for the implicit bias in virial mass measurements, the implied GWB drops significantly but is still in tension with the most stringent PTA upper limits. Similar results hold for the PTF sample. Bayesian model selection shows that the null hypothesis (whereby the candidates are false positives) is preferred over the binary hypothesis at about 2.3σ and 3.6σ for the CRTS and PTF samples respectively. Although not decisive, our analysis highlights the potential of PTAs as astrophysical probes of individual SMBHB candidates and indicates that the CRTS and PTF samples are likely contaminated by several false positives.
