Anthropogenic water vapor emissions in Tokyo

Temporal and spatial variations in anthropogenic water vapor (AWV) emissions and anthropogenic heat (AH) in Tokyo were estimated using data from a geographic information system (GIS) and an energy‐consumption database. The maximum value of AWV exceeded 500 W m−2 in summer in central Tokyo. Estimations of AWV were validated with field‐measured data. The estimated and measured data agreed well, indicating that anthropogenic sources such as district cooling systems release large amounts of water vapor into the atmosphere.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of a thermal environment in a substantial urban area by numerical simulation. First, we proposed a method for the gathering of spatial geometry and material data in a substantial urban area and developed a 3D CAD model, which was sufficiently accurate for the calculation of heat transmission. Then, we calculated the surface temperature for every urban block by using the numerical simulation on the assumption of a clear sky day in summer in Tokyo. Further, we ascertained the Heat Island Potential (HIP) for every urban block, which was an index of the sensible heat flow rate on all surfaces. The results indicated that the variation in HIP of 36 urban blocks were large not only in the day but also in the night. Furthermore, it was shown that every block group classified by land use type exhibited a characteristic tendency of the diurnal change in HIP, and that the varied land cover resulted in the differences in HIP in the same land use type group.

Counting on a cool Tokyo summer

Tokyo faces a danger more commonly associated with Third World countries: summertime electricity blackouts. The situation is so precarious that the Tokyo Electric Power Co. Inc. (Tepco) has launched a high-profile ad campaign exhorting its customers to conserve energy. Japan's leading utility is urging its customers to conserve. Tokyo's power crisis originated in a big safety and oversight scandal that forced Tepco to close down its 17 nuclear reactors for inspection. Nuclear power generation accounts for 17 GW of Tepco's total capacity of 59 GW, which supplies 40 percent of the Tokyo metropolitan power needs and 27 million customers. With summer fast approaching, Tepco employees and NISA officials are busy meeting with residents near the plants to convince them that the reactors will indeed be safe to restart. Tepco has been scrambling to buy electric power from other utility companies and reactivate some thermal power plants. The government's conservation campaign includes a request to industry to advance the summer "Obon" holiday from mid-August to the end of July or early August, when electricity demand is highest. Consumers are being asked to set their air-conditioner thermostats at a higher-than-usual 28 °C.

This short note is a preliminary one, which contains the observational results obtained during last summer in Tokyo by means of a simple recorder of Simpson's type (Pron. Roy. Soc. A 161 309-352, 1937). The antenna used is about 70m long, one end being about 30m high, the other 69m. Three near thunderstorms were investigated which were weak and originated without exception in the vicinity of Tokyo and had almost negative atmospheric potential gradients on the ground. Three other remote thunderstorms were also recorded, potential gradients being more often negative than positive. So far as the present results are concerned. the electric fields under thunderclouds are completely explained by Simpson's model. It is also noteworthy that several hours before the attack of a typhoon in Tõkyõ, a negative electric field was recorded. It was already noticed among Japanese forecasters that a typhoon was often preceeded by thunderstorms. The above record is thus interesting in connection with this fact together with Arakawa's hypothesis of typhoon rainfall, which, after him, must be accomplished by some instability mechanism.
