Sample preparation method for the determination of total sulfur in plant materials

The total sulfur (S) content for two plant materials, maize leaf and garlic clove, and a standard tea sample was determined by extraction with 4M hydrochloric acid (HCl), with the S in the extractant determined by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP‐AES). The plant materials were also wet digested in an acid mixture and the S results were found to be comparable. In addition, other elements can be measured simultaneously in the HCl extractant.

Determination of forms of sulphur in plant material by x‐ray fluorescence spectrometry

AbstractA method is described for the determination of S6+ (sulphate) and Sc (C—S bonded sulphur) in plant material by x‐ray fluorescence spectrometry which is considerably more simple and rapid than the chemical determinations of the corresponding sulphur forms.

Determination of total sulfur in plant materials using an automated sulfur analyzer

Abstract An automated sulfur analyzer (ASA), which has been developed for sulfur analysis of coal and coke was evaluated for determination of total sulfur in plant materials. Plant materials containing from 0.15% to 0.75% sulfur have been analyzed with precision and accuracy superior to other accepted methods which are more tedious and time‐consuming. The direct reading unit is capable of making approximately one sulfur determination every three minutes.

Alkaline Oxidation Method for Determination of Total Sulfur in Plant Materials1

AbstractCurrent wet digestion methods available for determination of total S in plant materials are unsafe and usually give inaccurate results.A rapid and precise method of determining total S in plant materials has been developed. The plant sample is heated with NaOBr solution to oxidize plant S compounds to sulfate, and the sulfate thus formed is reduced to H2S by a modified Johnson‐Nishita procedure and determined colorimetrically as methylene blue. Its results for total Sare generally higher than those obtained by the HCIO4‐digestion method, suggesting possible loss of S, as gases, or incomplete oxidation of S during digestion of plant samples with HCIO4. In addition to being safe, digestion of plant samples with NaOBr is more rapid than with HCIO4. By using a bank of 10 distillation units, a single operator can perform 60 analyses in a normal working day.

Analysis of sulphur in plant material

Abstract PIXE analysis was used for quantitative determinations of total sulphur in samples of cereals and leguminous plants. Several other low-Z elements were analyzed simultaneously.

Total sulphur determination in plant material

A simple method for the determination of total sulphur in plant material is proposed. Wet ashing with a HClO4-H2O2 mixture is performed in a simple semi-closed system without losses of sulphur. Even the difficultly oxidizable compounds like methionine are completely recovered. The determination is performed by turbidity measurement using barium chloride. Reproducibility of the procedure is good (rel. st. dev. 3–4%).

Wet digestion, manual and automated analysis of total sulphur in plant material

Abstract Accurate and reproducible determinations of total sulphur can be made following digestion of plant samples with a nitric/ perchloric acid mixture containing dichromate and metavanadate. Care should be taken to control digestion temperatures. The occurrence of dense fumes of perchloric acid and the deposition of red chromium trioxide are not satisfactory indicators of the digestion endpoint. Digestion for lh. beyond the change in colour of the digest from green to olive‐brown was necessary, in our work, for consistent results. Methods for reliable manual and automated determination of sulphate sulphur are described; the sulphur values obtained with our samples, were the same by both methods.

A comparison of X‐ray fluorescence spectrometry and chemical methods for determining sulphur in plant material

AbstractA rapid method for determining total S in plants by X‐ray fluorescence spectro‐metric analysis of ground pelletised plant material is compared with chemical methods using titrimetric, flame photometric and turbidimetric methods of sulphate determination. Errors in the chemical methods were caused by incomplete oxidation of organic sulphur and by non‐reproducibility of the turbidimetric determination of sulphate. A method incorporating the oxidation of the sample with HNO3 and Mg(NO3)2 and titration of the reduced sulphate by mercuric acetate gave recoveries accurate to a mean of 1% when determining the sulphur content of sulphur compounds.Taking the results for plant materials determined by the titrimetric method as standard, XRF gave sulphur values with a mean difference of 4%; the flame photometric determination of sulphate after HNO3 + Mg(NO3)2 oxidation gave results with a mean difference of 12%. The effect of absorption of S radiation by silicon is noted.

Sulphur status in Finnish cultivated soils

A method for determining total sulphur in plant material and soil samples using the induction furnace technique and subsequent turbidimetric determination of sulphate sulphur was discussed. A procedure for extracting sulphur from soil samples with ammonium acetate (pH 4.65), the interference of the organic matter being reduced by oxidation of the extract with H2O2, was proposed. Sulphur balance in Finnish cultivated soils was estimated by taking into account the average amounts of emitted (8 kg S/ha/yr.), precipitated (8 kg S/ha/yr.) and leached (8 kg S/ha/yr.) sulphur. The actual situation in the cultivated soils seems thus to be depending, on an average, on the uptake by plants and the sulphur applied (12 kg S/ha/yr. in the early 1970s). In 104 samples of cultivated soil, the content of total sulphur showed a slight correlation with the content of organic carbon. The amounts of sulphur extracted in various ways were not predictable by means of the soil characteristics used (pHCaCl2, org. C and texture). Extracted sulphur did not correlate sufficiently with the development and sulphur uptake of plants. Under field conditions in northern Finland, sulphur application produced a relatively distinct result in respect both to the ley yields on Carex peat, and their sulphur content. On mineral soils in southern Finland the yields were unaffected by supplementary fertilization with sulphur. In the pot experiments performed a fairly close relationship between sulphur and nitrogen was demonstrated.

The determination of sulphur in plant material by X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy

AbstractX‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy is used for the determination of total sulphur in plant material.One calibration curve can be used for pasture, clover, apple leaf, rape plant top and wheat plant samples.The intensity of the sulphur Ka line radiation is measured on a pressed disc of sample backed with a phenol formaldehyde resin (“Excelite”) and this is related to a fused disc reference sample to give a ratio, x. A linear expression y = 1.0548x ‐ 0.0236 (r = 0.9810) relating x, the ratio, and y, the chemically determined sulphur content of the sample, is derived.The technique is rapid (2 min/sample reading time). The reproducibility of readings is less than 1.5% as a coefficient of variation, the standard error of prediction is ± 0.011% sulphur and the detection limit is 13 μg/g.

A Simple Turbidimetric Method of Determining Total Sulfur in Plant Materials1

AbstractA rapid method of determining total sulfur in plant materials is described. The plant material is digested in a volumetric flask with nitric and perchloric acid, and the sulfate content of an aliquot of the digest is determined turbidimetrically as BaSO4 by a barium chloride‐gelatin procedure. The method is simple and precise, and its results agree closely with those obtained by the Johnson‐Nishita method.

Determination of sulphur in plant material by X‐ray emission spectrometry

AbstractA simple, rapid technique for the routine determination of total sulphur in pasture samples is described. Eighty samples a day could be measured, with little additional time needed for the sample preparation.Measurements were made directly on loosely packed plant material.The intensity of emission at the sulphur‐Kα line for each plant sample was related to that of a fused reference standard used in silicate analysis.Variations in sample density, due mainly to particle size of the material and ambient humidity, influenced the results, but were eliminated readily.A linear expression, Y = 0.4162X–0.0047 (r = 0.9968; P <0.001) relating X, the ratio, and Y, the chemically determined sulphur content of the sample, was derived.

Determination of microgramme quantities of dissolved sulphate in surface waters, soils and plants

AbstractA rapid and simple method is described for determining sulphate in surface waters and water extracts of soils by precipitating it as lead sulphate in 40% ethanol and measuring the residual lead in solution by means of an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Sulphate may be determined in concentrations as low as 1 ppm in the solutions.This method can also be used to determine sulphur in plant material after it has been converted to dissolved sulphate by combustion in an oxygen‐filled flask.

Sulfur in Plant Materials by Digestion with Nitric and Perchloric Acid

AbstractA method for the determination of S in plant materials is described. The material is oxidized by nitric and perchloric acid using a heating block to reduce perchloric acid loss. The SO4 content of the solution is determined turbidimetrically as BaSO4. The proposed method has been found to be more accurate and rapid than the conventional dry ashing procedures for the determination of S in plant material.
