Identification of substitution and Ellipsis in Leo Tolstoy’s short story by English Language major students

This study is based on the results of the research which aimed (1) to identify the cohesive devices used by Leo Tolstoy in A grain as Big as a Hen’s Egg as proposed by Halliday & Hasan and (2) to find whether substitution and ellipsis from the same story could be identified by the seven English Major students doing the Discourse Analysis Course during the final assessment after being taught The research followed descriptive quality method and there was also a small quantitative method comparing the actual and identified substitution and ellipsis devices. The results of the research show that the ellipsis ‘substitution by zero’ Halliday & Hasan (1976: 142), is dominant in A grain as Big as a Hen’s Egg, the short story in which the devices form aesthetically Tolstoy’s lucid and succinct style, which makes the parable clear to all who read it. Ellipsis is so imbibed in communication that ESL learners could identify it better than substitutions

Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield, 2014. 298 pp.Working the Story distinguishes itself from other news writing textbooks by targeting a broader range of writers, from reporters to publicists, and from columnists to corporate ghostwriters. The scope perfectly mirrors the authors' extensive professional experiences: Douglas Perret Starr worked as a veteran journalist and a ghostwriter, and Deborah Williams Dunsford had more than twenty years of experience in public relations and media writing.To say that the range of the book's topics is wide would be an understatement. It is almost all-inclusive. Topics are divided first by the identity of the writer (journalist and publicist) and then by a number of parameters, such as the nature of the story (e.g., general news, crime, politics, corporate speech, etc.), medium (e.g., radio, television, blog, etc.) and career (e.g., freelancing, job hunting, etc.). Readers would almost always be able to find chapters that they squarely fit in.The succinct style of the book also differs itself from similar books in the market. Most of the chapters imbue with tip-sheet style summaries of working knowledge. For example, on covering crime, courts, and trials, the book offers a fifteen-bullet-point list of Constitutional protection of U.S. citizens and non-citizens. The process of planning a convention, for another example, is simplified into twelve steps, along with a more elaborate section introducing a comprehensive list of components of a convention, from budget and speakers to coffee breaks and entertainers.As quickly accessible as it is, the book, however, should not be seen as a mere compilation of quick tips. In fact, the authors have made great efforts to cover background knowledge that unquestionably makes their advice more relevant and effective for practitioners. The beginning of the book is devoted to the importance of the press and Constitutional rights, all of which are revisited when they are needed to either advance information collection or defend journalistic integrity. Similarly, the authors discuss typical phases of crime and law enforcement before directing reporters to proper sources in various stages.More than offering the contexts for their advice, the book also provides suggestions on internalizing working knowledge and developing solid writing and research skills. For instance, keen observation and a sharp memory are essential to news reporters. A wide array of exercises, including reading two books of different genres and describing their details later, or recollecting nuanced details of a scene, aim to develop the capacity to recreate fieldwork without resorting to written notes.The comprehensiveness, context, and practicality of the book make it a great reference guide for both novice students and seasoned professionals. …

Kansei Engineering Applied to the Form Design of Injection Molding Machines

This study investigated the relationship between a subject’s evaluation of injection molding machines (IMMs) and formal design features using Kansei engineering. This investigation used 12 word pairs to evaluate the IMM configurations and employed the semantic differential method to explore the perception of 60 interviewees of 12 examples. The relationship between product feature design and corresponding words was derived by multiple regression analysis. Factor analysis reveals that the 12 examples can be categorized as two styles—advanced style and succinct style. For the advanced style, an IMM should use a rectangular form for the clamping-unit cover and a full-cover for the injection-unit. For the succinct style, the IMM configuration should use a beveled form for the safety cover and a vertical rectangular form for the clamping-unit cover. Quantitative data and suggested guidelines for the relationship between design features and interviewee evaluations are useful to product designers when formulating design strategies.

Antimicrobial Resistance: Beyond the Breakpoint

The Fifth Decennial International Conference on Healthcare-Associated Infections, held March 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, brought the issue of antimicrobial drug resistance to the forefront. Results of a survey that polled members of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America regarding critical knowledge gaps and research priorities were presented. Respondents reported that 3 of the 5 most important issues they face are directly associated with antimicrobial drug resistance: multidrug–resistant gram-negative bacteria, antimicrobial stewardship, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) The publication of this collection of authoritative reviews of these issues is therefore timely. This concise volume draws on the knowledge of 23 authors, many of whom are either current or past staff members of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 10 chapters and 174 pages, these authors address contemporary issues in bacterial, fungal, parasitic, and viral (HIV) resistance, as well as some aspects of the effects of antimicrobial drug resistance on healthcare facilities. The main emphasis of the book is on the epidemiology and mechanisms and public health implications of resistant pathogens, not on details of treatment. Chapters on MRSA, extended-spectrum β-lactamase–producing gram-negative bacteria, and fluoroquinolone resistance cover the epidemiology and mechanisms of resistance, laboratory detection, and treatment considerations. A historical review of the contribution of bacterial pneumonia to the death rate of previous influenza pandemics clearly discusses the likelihood and consequences of resistance in strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae and S. aureus. Questions raised here about how these antimicrobial drug–resistant bacteria affect a modern pandemic, such as the impact of antiviral drugs and diagnostic testing on antibiotic use, can now be investigated in light of the subsequent pandemic (H1N1) 2009. Three chapters address resistance in healthcare settings and the promotion of appropriate antimicrobial drug use. The first describes interventions to reduce the inappropriate use of antimicrobial agents for respiratory conditions and quality initiatives that can improve prescribing. The chapter that reviewed effective strategies for controlling resistant pathogens in hospitals is the only chapter that was not well referenced on some of the more controversial issues, such as silver coating of devices. However, the chapter on estimating costs attributable to infections caused by antimicrobial drug–resistant bacteria is comprehensive. Three final chapters expand the scope of this volume into issues of parasitic, fungal, and viral resistance. Resistance in helminths is presented in the context of mass treatment during eradication programs and the need for enhanced surveillance programs. The chapter on antifungal resistance reviews available drugs and laboratory detection of resistance. The final chapter on HIV drug resistance in the developing world reviews initial concerns and current encouraging data on antiretroviral drug–resistance in sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia. Current public health strategies for detecting and controlling drug–resistant HIV are given, along with a clear account of the biological and pharmacologic factors that affect HIV resistance and a review of areas needing continued attention and resources. The strength of this book is the wide scope of its coverage of antimicrobial drug resistance. Most chapters are well written in a succinct style and format easily accessible to the general reader. The text has supportive references from primary sources, and contains a good index. This book is a valuable resource for those beginning their careers or who are looking for a research focus, or for anyone already an expert in an aspect of antimicrobial resistance who is seeking a broader perspective.

Modernist Aesthetics and Consumer Culture in the Writings of Oscar Wilde (review)

Similar to the work of some modernist playwrights, her pieces resembled dreamlike meditations, episodic and collage-like with stage pictures dissolving one into the other. Garelick also examines Fuller’s influence on alternative views of character. Some modernist playwrights were intrigued with character as mutable and fluid. Fuller spent her career transfiguring multiple times during a performance, never mooring herself to one effigy or vision for too long. The book concludes with a few examples of contemporary artists whose work references Fuller’s and a bibliography organized by type of publication, providing readers with a rich and diverse array of resources to investigate. Garelick ’s deep analysis of Fuller’s performance techniques reveals an alchemical artist whose performance aesthetic reduced the theatrical forms of her day to a state of prima materia. In the liminal space of her performative crucible, Fuller transfigured the ingredients of narrative, character, scenography, and language through technology, abstraction, and augmentation. Garelick’s text is a compelling argument for the centralization of Loie Fuller’s work in relation to understanding of modernist performance history. —PATRICIA K. Since belatedly acknowledging Oscar Wilde’s worth as a theorist and literary figure more than half a century after his death, critics have attempted—often in vain and sometimes in error—to place the poet and dramatist in the historical spectrum of modernist aesthetics and theory. In Modernist Aesthetics and Consumer Culture in the Writings of Oscar Wilde, Paul Fortunato suggests three possible stages to Wilde scholarship, the first being the sixty years after Wilde’s death, when he was “critically ignored in Anglo-American scholarship” (16). The second stage seems to have started in the 1980s and not only restored Wilde to literary significance but also established him as a prominent literary modernist . Fortunato points out that critics of this stage (e.g., Richard Ellman and Linda Dowling, leading rehabilitators of Wilde scholarship) have reconciled themselves to Wilde’s consumer associations and journalistic involvements by { 221 } BOOK REV IEWS considering them a means of supplemental income (17). In doing so, Fortunato argues, they discredit an essential component of Wilde’s aesthetic and the very type of modernist Wilde was, that is, a consumer modernist. Fortunato proposes a third stage—represented by recent scholars who have returned to Wilde’s mass-culture involvement in order to clarify his literary and aesthetic career—and presents himself as part of this third stage. In this study, Fortunato meticulously and creatively unravels his assertion that Wilde’s activity in the mass cultural realm was more than just a subset of “real” work; in fact, Wilde could neither create nor conceive of art that was not commodified. Drawing from the work of other third-stage critics such as Josephine Guy, Ian Small, and Edward Said, Fortunato illustrates how Wilde, beginning his literary career amid the burgeoning mega-institutions of press, fashion, and advertising, played the times, albeit in his customary style of bewildering paradox. Fortunato consistently outlines his argument in an organized, succinct style. After beginning with a colorful description of the society and culture in which Wilde operated, Fortunato engages in cultural study analyses of the lateVictorian mega-industries of journalism, fashion, and theatre. In the course of this analysis, Fortunato carefully traces the development of Wilde’s aesthetic theories—particularly the aesthetics of surface, image, and ritual—amid his work as a “journalist, magazine editor, commentator on dress and design, and popular playwright” (ix). In chapter 1, Fortunato summarizes Wilde’s artistic and personal relationships with key literary, artistic, and social persons of the time so as to better answer the question of how a “bohemian anarchist [found] himself writing West End comedies about elitist society” (1). The first American textbook of surgery.

The first systematic textbook of surgery written in the United States, The Elements of Surgery, was completed in 1813 by John Syng Dorsey, a University of Pennsylvania surgeon. The work thoroughly covered all major clinical areas of surgery of that time in a two-volume, 797-page text. Subsequent editions were published in 1818, 1823, and 1831. It became the standard surgical textbook in this country during that era and was the first American medical text exported abroad for use at the more established European centers of medical education. The reasons for writing the text included a desire to put into print the teachings of Philip Syng Physick (first Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, and Dorsey's uncle), the new American nationalism, and socioeconomic pressures forced on the American publishing industry by the War of 1812 and preceding trade embargoes. In addition to extensive exposure to Physick, Dorsey was also uniquely qualified to write and illustrate this text, as he exhibited an unusually succinct style and was a remarkable medical artist. The book was the forerunner to William Gibson's The Institutes and Practice of Surgery and all American surgical textbooks to follow.

Cognitive pragmatism: the theory of knowledge in pragmatic perspective

Nicholas Rescher tackles the major questions of philosophical inquiry, pondering the nature of truth and existence. In the authoritative voice and calculated manner that we ve come to expect from this distinguished philosopher, Rescher argues that the development of knowledge is a practice, pursued by humans because we have a need for its products. This pragmatic approach satisfies our innate urge as humans to make sense of our surroundings.Taking his discussion down to the level of particular details, and addressing such topics as inductive validation, hypostatization fallacies, and counterfactual reasoning, Rescher abandons abstract generalities in favor of concrete specifics. For example, philosophers usually insist that to reason logically from a counterfactual, we must imagine a possible world in which the statement is fact. But Rescher argues that there s no need to attempt to accept the facts of a world outside our cognition in order to reason from them. He shows us how we can use our own natural system of prioritizing, our own understanding of the fundamental, to resolve the inconsistencies in such statements as, If the Eiffel Tower were in Manhattan, then it would be in New York State. In using dozens of real-world examples such as these, and in arguing in his characteristically succinct style, Rescher casts light on a wide variety of concrete issues in the classical theory of knowledge, and reassures us along the way that the inherent limitations on our knowledge are no cause for distress. In pragmatic theory and inquiry, we must accept that the best we can do is good enough, because we only have a certain (albeit large) set of tools and conceptualizations available to us.A unique synthesis, this endeavor into pragmatic epistemology will be of interest to scholars and students of philosophy and cognitive science.

Philosophy, Philology, and Politics in Eighteenth-Century China: Li Fu and The Lu-Wang School Under The Ch'ing

This book explains the general intellectual climate of the early Ch'ing period, and the political and cultural characteristics of the Ch'ing regime at the time. Professor Huang brings to life the book's central characters, Li Fu and the three great emperors - K'ang-hsi, Yung-cheng, and Chien-lung - whom he served. Although the author's main concern is to explain the contributions of Li Fu to the Lu-Wang school of Confucianism, he also gives a clearly written account of the Lu-Wang and Ch'eng-Chu schools from the twelfth century to the eighteenth. In a clear, succinct style, Huang explains the historical differences between the Ch'eng-Chu and Lu-Wang schools without sacrificing the subtleties of either. The book culminates in a discussion of the hero-emperor K'ang-hsi's appropriation of the 'Tradition of the Way' from his intellectual officials, which denied them their traditional role as moral censors and critics of the emperor's exercise of authority.

One rarely finds a book that should be part of the library of every ophthalmologist, every training center, and every clinical facility. Handbook of Ophthalmology is such a book. It is not a textbook; it is not a dictionary. The text is a well thought out, highly useful, and practical reference for ophthalmologists. The book has some usefulness for students, house officers, and general practitioners as a quick reference in ophthalmology, but because of its succinct style it tends to speak directly to the practicing ophthalmologist. The text is divided into four sections: glossary of terms; differential diagnoses, including signs and symptoms; clinical ophthalmology with seven subsections; and the appendixes. The glossary is a fairly extensive list of ophthalmological terms, both common and esoteric, including many proper names with relevance for ophthalmology. The terms are briefly and accurately defined, and in the case of syndromes, a page reference is given

(p. 1fl3) Through this revelation the Christian who accepts the glorified Christ puts on a new nature and his light takes possession of men. Hence, the mission of the Church is to bring the gospel to men, a revelation distinct from that of the Old Testament both in its object, the risen Christ, and its effect, fellowship in the resurrection of Christ. Evangelization is more than merely preservation of the gospel and its transmission. By the commission of Christ " he became himself the gospel that she must preach." (p. 149) Faith is more than assent to doctrinal truth, it is a faith response to the person of the risen Christ. Preaching demands the conveyance of the person of Christ. Such preaching can only he effective through the power of God. Such preaching is reserved not solely to the successors of the apostles hut to all Christians as they constitute the body of Christ, the sacrament of Christ's presence. Since the volume contains articles written over a period of time in various journals, it labors under some discontinuity and repetition. But the single theme is that through the glorification of the risen Savior salvation is offered to all men. This series of ten essays, directed to college and adult study groups, presents the author's illustration of the recent Council's teaching on the nature of the truth revealed in Scripture. Using examples from current theological problems, numbering among them, polygenesis, divorce, resurrection , and church government, the author presents a new format for dealing with the age-old question of biblical inerrancy. Inerrancy is no longer a question of trying to explain away certain errors hut of realizing that what the Bible reveals is there for the sake of salvation. Thus, no truth is revealed in Scripture except in the context of this general truth: the salvation of all men. A particular Biblical passage is to he judged true, not insofar as it is historically or scientifically accurate hut insofar as it is accurate for the sake of salvation. The sun standing still in the heavens at Joshua's command may he erroneous from the ~66 BOOK REVIEWS scientific point of view, but it does tell us something about om" salvation: how God cares for those he has chosen to be his own. As a consequence, Grispino re-examines some Biblical notions that have been uncritically accepted in the past as " dogmatic truth " and points out that, in the light of Vatican II, only truths which are clearly necessary for the sake of salvation can be so regarded. The bulk of this brief work is then spent defining what exactly Scripture is teaching, for the sake of salvation, in certain problem areas. The author's succinct style and ability to synthesize the latest theological thinking meets the needs of his audience rather well. In some cases, however , as for example, in the discussion of Jesus' consciousness of his divinity, brought up in the last chapter, merely summarizing the theologians ' different views is not easy, nor does it do them complete justice. This reviewer feels that the author used better examples of what he is about in other parts of the book. Finally, although the handling of the themes might seem untraditional at times~in the context of his inquiringwhat salvific truths are contained in Scripture's treatment of these themesGrispino gives accurate and thoughtful results. <i>Traité de Radiodiagnostic</i>is an ambitious effort by French authors to produce an encyclopedia of diagnostic radiology in 20 volumes. This volume (vol 13) represents one of three devoted to neuroradiology and undertakes to describe all relevant normal neuroanatomy and techniques of examination. The next volume of this series (vol 14) will describe pathological changes of the skull, brain and cranial nerves. The third volume (numerically vol 15), devoted to the spinal canal, spinal cord, and nerve roots, was published in 1971. This volume is without doubt a major contribution to textbooks of neuroradiology. Despite the relatively small number of pages, it succeeds in presenting a huge amount of information. The authors—and there are 41—must be congratulated on their succinct style as well as meticulous selection of illustrations and accompanying diagrams. The publisher has achieved superior reproductions of the roentgenograms. Although many of the illustrations are small and cropped, there

Lung Calcifications in X-ray Diagnosis.

Anne Morrow Lindbergh once said that one cannot collect all the beautiful shells on the beach. She might have been speaking about pulmonary calcifications before Salzman published this book. He has performed a valuable service for those who study chest roentgenograms by collecting mundane and exotic examples of pulmonary calcification from medical centers throughout the world. He has correlated them with existing knowledge of etiologic diseases. The author divided his material into calcifications occurring in lung parenchyma, hilar structures, and pleura, and concludes with a brief chapter on differential diagnosis. It is possible to extract much clinical information from calcification patterns in the lungs. Awareness of these configurations permits estimation of pathogenesis, duration, and identification of many different disorders. The author's succinct style and thoughtful selection of representative roentgenograms, which are faithfully reproduced, are to be commended.

The examination of recruits in the civil war (Bartholow, 1863)

T HE ADVENT of the civil War government officials with the raising large numbers of men and confronted need for confronted physicians--most of whom had been engaged in civil practice-with the duty of estimating physical and mental fitness for military duty. For advising his colleagues in this specialized professional task Roberts Bartholow (18311904) possessed suitable qualifications. ‘4 graduate Of the Medical Department of the University of Maryland, he entered the regular armv about 1856 and served in Utah, New Mexico and Minnesota. During the Civil War he had duty at several military hospitals, including the McDougall General Hospital and the Lincoln General Hospital at Washington. 1Yhile in charge of the former institution he wrote .4 Manual of Instructions for Enlisting and Discharging Soldiers, which was published in Philadelphia by J. B. Lippincott in 1863. This book, written in the clear, succinct style appropriate to a military manual, provides much information on the condition of medical knowledge at the time and also affords interesting incidental insights into matters of wider scope.
