Production of p-CuO/n-ZnO:Co nanocomposite heterostructure thin films: An optoelectronic study

The p-n junction is the principal mode of optoelectronic semiconductor material. At present, we submit a solution-based attempt at the synthesis of nanostructured p-type CuO and n-type ZnO nanocomposite (NC) heterostructure films. Bare and Cobalt (Co)-doped CuO–ZnO NC films have been produced on glass slides using the SILAR (Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction) method. The influence of Co-doping concentration on the physical characteristics of CuO–ZnO NC heterostructure films was investigated. XRD spectrums indicated the phase and structural purity of solution-based synthesized CuO–ZnO NC samples. The surface topographical, as well as optical and electrical properties of heterostructure films were, also investigated. While the bare CuO–ZnO NC film has a ∼38% transmission near 1000 nm wavelength region, the 2.0% Co-doped CuO–ZnO NC film has ∼31% of optical transmission. The sheet resistance value of the grown 2.0% Co:CuO–ZnO NC sample is almost 13 times lower than that of the bare CuO–ZnO NC sample at 400 K temperature. As a consequence, our attempt ensures a novel strategy for the production and performance optimization of CuO–ZnO NC heterostructures in the implementation of optoelectronics.

Constructing recyclable photocatalytic BiOBr/Ag nanowires/cotton fabric for efficient dye degradation under visible light

In this study, a highly-efficient photocatalytic and recyclable BiOBr/Ag nanowires (AgNW)/cotton fabric (CF) composite was fabricated by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) for rapid treatment of dye wastewater. The integration of AgNW and BiOBr aims to establish a channel for faster and easier charge transfer to enhance the photocatalytic performance. The chemical structure and morphology of BiOBr/AgNW/CF, as well as its photo-degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light radiation were explored. Results reveal that BiOBr/AgNW/CF exhibits remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activity over BiOBr/CF, which degrades 97 % of RhB within 90 min. BiOBr/AgNW/CF still maintains 88 % of photocatalytic degradation capacity after five reusing cycles due to the effective encapsulation of BiOBr that protects AgNW from oxidation. Photoluminescence, electron spin resonance, and free radical trapping experiments confirm that the separation efficiency of photo-generated electron-hole pairs plays an important role in improving photocatalytic performance. In all, this work exhibits great potential in the development of textile-based photocatalytic materials that integrates two significant merits, the high degradation efficiency and easy recovery.

Cadmium sulphide-sensitized zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) photoanode by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction for solar cell application

In the present study, cadmium sulphide (CdS) quantum dot-sensitized ZrO2 photoanodes have been analysed by using the facial and cost-effective method, popularly known as successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR), performed at 300 K. The presence of compact layer and ZnS treatment of the as-prepared photoanode is studied in this article to improve the solar cell parameters. The X-ray diffraction peaks infer the nano-crystalline nature of ZrO2 films with an average particle size of 39.14 nm. The CdS-sensitized ZrO2 films show a significant increase in absorption of photons in the visible region (i.e., 200 to 520 nm) of the absorption spectrum, as we have increased the number of SILAR cycles. Poly-sulphide electrolytes have been prepared in double distilled water and carbon black soot on conducting substrate is used as a counter electrode to be economical. The J–V characteristic of 10 CdS/ZrO2 with a compact layer of TiO2 with surface passivation (ZnS) treatment gives the maximum Jsc of 1.46 mA/cm2 with a fill factor of 0.34 and conversion efficiency of 0.46%. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of the quantum dot-sensitized solar cell is studied to understand the kinetics of charge transfer and transport processes mechanisms involved.

Development of SnO2–ZnO thin films as a photocatalyst for obtaining alternative fuels through photocatalytic reactions

A SnO2–ZnO photocatalyst was deposited using two different methods, successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) and sputtering. The films were annealed at 400 °C for formation of the SnO2–ZnO. X-ray diffraction results revealed that the bare-SnO2 film was composed of the orthorhombic SnO2 phase but subjecting the film to an annealing treatment yielded tetragonal SnO2 and hexagonal ZnO phases. The films have a nonhomogeneous surface with spherical particles, and surface-particle agglomeration occurred when ZnO was deposited on the surface. Native defects, such as oxygen vacancies, of ZnO and SnO2 allowed hydrogen production, which promoted redox reactions. The combination of these oxides resulted in the stability of the films after a second photocatalytic test. The presence of these defects was corroborated through photoluminescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The corresponding results revealed an emission band at 460 nm and a singlet peak at 532 eV, which are associated with the region defects and oxygen-deficient regions, respectively.

Structural, Maorphological, Electrical and Optical Properties of SILAR Deposited Flowers Buds Like SrMoO4 Film

Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) method is employed to deposit microcrystalline flowers buds like SrMoO4 film onto glass substrate using SrCl2 .6H2 O and Na2 MoO4 •2H2 O as cationic and anionic precursors respectively. Structural and morphological characterization of the film were carried out by means of X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectra, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy and EDX studies, which confirms the formation of scheelite type tetragonal structure and flowers buds like microcrystalline grain growth of SrMoO4 film. The optical band gap and activation energy of the SrMoO4 film is found to be 3.6 and 1.15 eV respectively

Solar photocatalytic performance of glass substrates coated with Ag3PO4 thin films

Silver-orthophosphate (Ag3PO4) photocatalysts exhibit excellent photo-oxidative capabilities under visible light irradiation, especially in their powders form. However, Ag3PO4 in the form of thin films has not been explored that much and very little is known about their performance under solar irradiation. In the present study, glass substrates were coated with Cu-doped Ag3PO4 (Cu-Ag3PO4) and Ag3PO4 thin films using successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) due to its simplicity, relatively low-cost and ability to be performed at low temperatures with low time requirements. The as-deposited thin films were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and UV–Visible spectrophotometry, while their photocatalytic performances were evaluated on Rhodamine-B (Rh-B) dye degradation under real solar light irradiation. The adopted coating protocol resulted in regular thin films that crystallize in the desired P4̅3n cubic phase, where doping with Cu was shown to be responsible of a crystallite size reduction within the film. From the optical point of view, a broad absorbance in the entire visible range was obtained with bandgap energies of about 2.2 eV in the case of Ag3PO4 thin films, and around 1.65 eV in the case of Cu-Ag3PO4 thin films. Such optical features were exploited to test the photocatalytic performance in the degradation of Rh-B dye. After 4 h of solar irradiation, the variation of the relative concentration of Rh-B solution relative to the degradation efficiency of the photocatalysts was of 54% in the case of Cu-Ag3PO4 thin films and of 89% in the case of Ag3PO4 thin films. So, exploration of a wide area of the solar visible spectrum is made possible under doping, a finding that would improve the overall photocatalytic activity which is very promising for the degradation of other organic pollutants under solar irradiation.

Enhanced photoelectrochemical performance of NiS-modified TiO2 nanorods with a surface charge accumulation facet.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting for hydrogen production technology is considered as one of the most promising solutions to energy shortage and environmental remediation. TiO2/NiS nanorod arrays were successfully prepared using hydrothermal deposition followed by the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra characterization studies indicate the successful deposition of NiS on TiO2 NRs. The NiS deposition on TiO2 was optimized by controlling the impregnation cycle. The optimal sample exhibits a photocurrent density of 1.16 mA cm-2 at 0.6 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which is a 1.9-fold enhancement over that of pristine TiO2 nanorod arrays. The enhanced photoelectrochemical performance can be attributed to two aspects. On the one hand, the (101) crystal plane of rutile TiO2 is the facet where photogenerated holes accumulate and is an efficient active plane for the oxygen evolution reaction; on the other hand, NiS is a narrow band gap semiconductor, and its deposition on TiO2 nanorods can further promote the separation and transport of photogenerated charge carriers.

Growth-control of hexagonal CdS-decorated ZnO nanorod arrays with low-temperature preheating treatment for improved properties and efficient photoelectrochemical applications.

The limitations of oxide semiconductor-based solar cells in achieving high energy conversion efficiencies have prompted incessant research efforts towards the creation of efficient heterostructures. Despite its toxicity, no other semiconducting material can fully replace CdS as a versatile visible light-absorbing sensitizer. Herein, we explore the aptness of preheating treatment in the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) deposition technique and improve the understanding of the principle and the effects of a controlled growth environment on thus-formed CdS thin films. Single hexagonal phases of nanostructured cadmium sulfide (CdS)-sensitized zinc oxide nanorods arrays (ZnO NRs) have been developed without the support of any complexing agent. The influences of film thickness, cationic solution pH and post-thermal treatment temperature on the characteristics of binary photoelectrodes have been investigated experimentally. Interestingly, the preheating-assisted deposition of CdS, which is rarely applied for the SILAR technique, resulted in improved photoelectrochemical performance similar to the post-annealing effect. The X-ray diffraction pattern revealed that optimized ZnO/CdS thin films were polycrystalline with high crystallinity. Examination of the morphology of the fabricated films via field emission scanning electron microscopy showed that film thickness and medium pH altered the growth mechanism of nanoparticles, thereby changing their particle sizes, which had a significant influence on the film's optical behavior. The effectiveness of CdS as a photosensitizer and the band edge alignment for ZnO/CdS heterostructures were evaluated using ultra-violet visible spectroscopy. Facile electron transfer in the binary system as evidenced in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy Nyquist plots, therefore, promotes higher photoelectrochemical efficiencies from 0.40% to 4.30% under visible light illumination as compared with the pristine ZnO NRs photoanode.

Influence of the Hot Water Parameter on the Structural and Optical Properties of SILAR-Deposited ZnO Samples

In this study, ZnO thin films were grown by the Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) method. The SILAR method is a chemical solution-based method consisting of 4 steps: solution, hot water, air and deionized water. Our main goal is to examine the changes in SILAR method production by changing the hot water parameter from these steps. It is widely known that chemical synthesis methods and their relative parameters have a crucial effect on the size of the produced thin films, surface area/volume ratio, porosity as well as defects in the film which in turn affect the morphology. All parameters were kept the same and changes were made in the hot water step, in addition to the classic 90°C hot water step, constant temperature ultrasonic cleaner at 40 ºC, an ultrasonic cleaner at room temperature, and an ultrasonic breaker at room temperature are used instead of the hot water step. For this purpose, alternative devices such as ultrasonic cleaner and ultrasonic breaker were used to break the unwanted weak bonds at lower temperatures during production. The structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties were characterized and the results were investigated in detail.

Nanocrystalline cobalt tungstate thin films prepared by SILAR method for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

This study highlights on the application of nanocrystalline cobalt tungstate (CoWO4) thin films as an electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) prepared using successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. The X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy etc. were employed for the characterization of CoWO4 thin films, revealing the formation of crystalline CoWO4 with spherical morphology. Furthermore, CoWO4 showed excellent electrochemical performance with the overpotential of 330 mV and Tafel slope of 153 mV dec−1 with retaining 97% of electrochemical stability after 24 h of OER. The study confirmed the structural maintenance of CoWO4 thin films after stability study.

Effect of Silver Nanoparticles SILAR Cycle on TiO2 Nanoparticles Thin Film: Optical and Structural Study

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has gained a lot of research interests due to its applicability in electronic materials, energy, environment, health & medicine, catalysis etc as a result of its high permittivity, refractive index, efficiency, low-cost chemical inertness, eco-friendliness, photocatalytic activity, photostability and ability of decomposing a wide variety of organic compounds. In this study, the effect of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) deposited through Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) on the optical, structural and morphological properties of TiO2 was explored systematically. The investigation was achieved via a combined effect of UV-vis spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) characterizing tools. As illustrated from the SEM micrographs, introduction of AgNPs result to enhanced nucleation and films growth with presence of shining surface which can be seen to contribute to good photon management through enhanced light scattering. The XRD results showed that, the presence of AgNPs on TiO2 results to peaks corresponding to that of the TiO2 crystallographic planes with no silver peaks detected due to its low concentration in the nanocomposite which shows that it was just homogeneously distributed on the surface of the TiO2 nanoparticles. The UV-Vis results show a red shift to higher wavelength, showing an increase in visible light absorption which can be ascribed to the strong field effect of the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR). There was a decrease in band gap edge with introduction of AgNPs which indicated an increase in the optical conductivity of the AgNPs modified film.

Chemical Synthesis of Bismuth Oxide and Its Ionic Conversion to Bismuth Sulphide for Enhanced Electrochemical Supercapacitor Energy Storage Performance

Successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR)-based room-temperature (27 °C) chemical synthesis of bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) and its ionic conversion to bismuth sulphide (Bi2S3) has been performed and reported in the present study. A chemical conversion of the bismuth oxide to the bismuth sulphide has been confirmed using changes in the structure, phase, surface elementals , and surface area measurement studies. Both bismuth oxide and bismuth sulphide electrode materials are envisaged in electrochemical measurements wherein, the later has evidenced an enhanced electrochemical performance over the prior. The cycling stability of the Bi2S3 (91% after 2000 cycles) electrode material is also better than the Bi2O3 (87% over 2000 cycles). The as-assembled Bi2S3//Bi2S3 symmetric electrochemical supercapacitor device has adduced 75.3 Wh kg−1 and 749.8 W Kg−1energy and power densities, respectively with nearly 88.8% capacitance retention efficacy even over 2000 redox cycles measured at 10 A g−1. The commercial potential of the Bi2S3//Bi2S3 has been tested by powering the display panel “CNED” consisting nearly 42 LEDs with a full-light intensity.

FeTe:Fe2TeO5 nanodots embedded MWCNTs: Nanocomposite electrode towards supercapacitor application

BackgroundFeTe:Fe2TeO5 nanodots encapsulated MWCNTs as a nanocomposite is a new hybrid electrode material tested for supercapacitor energy storage application for the first time. MethodFor the deposition of FeTe:Fe2TeO5 over MWCNTs simple, inexpensive, binder free and low-cost and thin-film method named successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) was used. Significant findingsFeTe:Fe2TeO5 nanodots encapsulated MWCNTs as a nanocomposite have been accomplished with the aid of sequential growth controlled chemical method. Mixed phase of iron telluride consisting of FeTe (Tetragonal) and Fe2TeO5(Monoclinic) has been well analyzed through structural studies. Due to growth of nanodots as seen through SEM images have been responsible to enhance surface area of MWCNTs/FeTe:Fe2TeO5 than that of bare FeTe:Fe2TeO5 supported by BET analysis. Oxidation states of mixed elements have been well confirmed through XPS studies. These characterization results of the electrode supporting for electrochemical supercapacitor application and hence, analyzed through electrochemical investigation inclusive of CV, GCD, EIS and electrochemical capacitance retention. Interestingly, MWCNTs/FeTe:Fe2TeO5 nanocomposite yields remarkable capacitance of 773.69 F/g at 3 mV/s, with an energy density of 8.19 Wh/kg and power density of 108 W/kg at current density of 0.8 mA/cm2. Electrodes good cyclic stability (capacitive retention) of 95% at 5000 CV cycles explores its candidature for future energy storage applications.

The synthesis and characterization of PbS/ PVA-Mg-Al-LDH nanocomposite film

This paper described the synthesis of lead(II)sulfide (PbS) based nanocomposite on polyvinyl alcohol/magnesium-aluminum–layered double hydroxide (PVA/Mg-Al-LDH) composite film by a successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. To characterize the prepared sample was carried out using X-ray powder diffraction analysis (XRD), Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscope, Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscope, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscope was used. The optical absorption study confirmed when the PbS nanoparticles are dispersed in the PVA polymer matrix, they can well fit the interstitial spaces between the polymer chains and thus an increase in the optical conductivity.

High-performance PbS/CdS quantum dot Co-sensitized hierarchical ZnO nanowall photoanodes decorated on electrochemically reduced graphene

In this study, we report the vertically aligned ZnO nanowalls (NWs) decorated electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO) structures co-deposited directly on the FTO substrates by a simple and one-pot electrochemical technique. Then, these ERGO/ZnONWs were co-sensitized with a successive layer of PbS and CdS quantum dots (QDs) by a successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique for the fabrication of ERGO/ZnONWs/PbS/CdS photoelectrodes. The effect of the number of PbS and CdS SILAR cycles on the photocurrent response of ERGO/ZnONWs photoelectrodes was systematically investigated by varying the SILAR cycle number. The QDSSCs were fabricated by using the PbS, CdS and PbS/CdS QDs decorated ERGO/ZnONWs as photoelectrode, copper (I) sulfide (Cu2S) as the counter electrode, and polysulfide redox couple (S2−/Sx2−) as an electrolyte. Compared with ERGO/ZnONWs photoelectrode sensitized with single QDs (PbS or CdS), the PbS/CdS co-sensitized ERGO/ZnONWs photoelectrodes showed the best performance with efficiency (η) of 5.85%, open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.65 V, a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 23.01 mA.cm−2, and a fill factor (FF) of 0.39 under one sun illumination, which is relatively higher than other PbS/CdS co-sensitized ZnO based QDSSCs previously reported in the literature. In this cascaded FTO-ERGO/ZnONWs/PbS/CdS, CdS serves as a passivating layer to PbS and contributes light absorption and highly efficient injection of electrons from CdS to PbS and then to ZnO due to its higher CB band. The present study also highlights the potential of this novel ERGO/ZnONWs/PbS/CdS photoanode. It introduces simple, green, and economical electrochemical techniques for researchers interested in fabricating ERGO/ZnONWs for various applications.

Synergistic effect of CuxOy-NPs/TiO2-NTs heterostructure on the photodegradation of amido black staining

TiO2 nanotube arrays have been extensively investigated for optoelectronic applications besides their excellent photocatalytic activity. The present work aims to study TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) fabricated with the anodization of Ti substrates. CuxOy nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) using the Successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. The obtained nanocomposite was used in the photocatalytic degradation of synthetic organic pollutants (amido black). Particular emphasis was focused on the effect of the morphological, optical, and structural properties of the CuxOy (i.e., the number of SILAR cycles) on the photocatalytic efficiency of the formed heterostructure. The morphological structural and optical properties were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), UV–vis spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL), respectively. The results show the formation of TiO2 anatase NTs decorated with CuO and Cu2O NPs. The density and size of the Cu2O NPs were found to increase with the number of SILAR cycles, whereas the energy band gap is narrowed by 0.7 eV. Photocatalytic tests demonstrate that at 15 SILAR cycles, the Cu2O.CuO-NPs/TiO2-NTs heterostructure exhibits the highest photocatalytic performance, reaching 94 % of amido black degradation under UV irradiation (256 nm) for 90 min. The experimental data modeling indicates that the faster the degradation, the better the photocatalytic performance; i.e., the reaction rate k = 0.025 min-1. The current study highlights the potential of CuxOy decorated TiO2 substrates as efficient photocatalytic systems for degrading hazardous organic pollutants.

Developing a Z-scheme Ag2CO3/ZIF-8 heterojunction for the surface decoration of cotton fabric toward repeatable photocatalytic dye degradation

This paper presents a novel strategy for fabricating efficient, tailorable, and reusable photocatalytic cotton fabrics (CF) using the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method with Ag2CO3-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) to degrade residual dyes from the textile industry. The Z-scheme photocatalytic degradation mechanism of ZIF-8/Ag2CO3/CF is also proposed. The results reveal that ZIF-8/Ag2CO3/CF prepared via 10 SILAR cycles photocatalytically degraded 91 % rhodamine B in 30 min. ZIF-8/Ag2CO3/CF had 15-fold higher photocatalytic activity than ZIF-8/CF. This enhancement was due to various effects, including, 1) the scattering of ZIF-8/Ag2CO3 nanoparticles on the fiber surface rather than inducing agglomeration using the SILAR method, 2) the prevention of Ag2CO3 photocorrosion by ZIF-8, and 3) the suppression of the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Moreover, ZIF-8/Ag2CO3/CF maintained 85 % photocatalytic degradation efficiency after five cycles, indicating its high reusability potential. Overall, this research offers a facile process for fabricating efficient, stable, and reusable photocatalytic fabrics to tackle the wastewater treatment issue in the textile industry.

Co-sensitising cadmium selenide and cadmium telluride quantum dots on titanium dioxide nanorods via the SILAR method

Co-sensitised CdSe/ CdTe quantum dots (QDs) on the surface of TiO2 nanorods were fabricated via different cycles of successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. The deposition of the QDs onto TiO2 nanorods were confirmed with transmission electron microscopy. A higher number of SILAR cycles has led to QDs aggregation and overgrowth on the top layer of the TiO2 nanorods layer. Furthermore, the higher number SILAR cycles also lowered the charge transfer resistance as observed in the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis. Based on the observation, 5 cycles were selected to be the optimized number of SILAR cycle. The sequential deposition of CdTe QDs increased the absorption intensity and extended the absorption spectra, demonstrating co-sensitisation effects, which increase the short circuit current density from 0.103 mA cm−2 to 0.158 mA cm−2 is shown to enhance the CdSe quantum dots sensitised solar cells (QDSSC) efficiency from 0.009 % to 0.018 %.

TiO2/CdS/CdSe quantum dots co-sensitized solar cell with the staggered-gap (type-II) heterojunctions for the enhanced photovoltaic performance

The effect of co-sensitization and ZnS passivation on the photovoltaic performance of CdS quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) were investigated. The deposition of CdS, CdSe quantum dots (QD) and ZnS passivation on TiO2 photoanode was carried out by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. CdS/CdSe co-sensitization developed two staggered type-II heterojunctions at TiO2/CdS and CdS/CdSe interfaces and resulted a cascade energy band structure. This suitable band alignment facilitated the double charge transfer mechanism at each heterojunction and transported the electrons easily into the photoanode. The narrow bandgap sensitizers CdS and CdSe significantly improved the potential utilization of solar spectrum with more charge carrier generation. ZnS passivation on QD surface suppressed electrode/electrolyte interfacial charge recombination and facilitated more electron injection from QDs into TiO2 photoanode. The EDAX elemental mapping results inferred that CdS, CdSe and ZnS have efficiently covered the TiO2 surface. TiO2/CdS and CdS/CdSe interfaces and the amorphous nature of ZnS could be verified with HRTEM images. Hence, the co-sensitization and surface passivation played a significant role to enhance the PCE of CdS QDSSC from 1.9% to 4.05%.

Fabrication of ZnO Nanorods Structure for Drastically Enhancing Gas Sensing Response to NO2 Gas

In this report, zinc oxide thin film was successfully deposited on a glass substrate by using a simple and low-cost technique i.e. modified Successive Ion Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR). Prepared zinc oxide thin film was characterized for its physical and chemical properties by using XRD diffraction, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), UV-VIS spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results of structural and morphological properties show that the prepared film has wurtzite hexagonal structure with nanorods-like morphology. Gas sensing characteristics revealed that the prepared film was sensitive to NO2 gas. The response calculated at operating temperature 200 °C, was 1.37 when NO2 concentration was 10 ppm, the response increased when the NO2 concentration increased which reached to 2.16 when NO2 concentration was 80 ppm with short response and recovery time. HIGHLIGHTS Nanorods- like morphology of ZnO were fabricated via modified SILAR technique The ZnO nanorods exhibit high sensitive and short response/ recovery time for NO2 gas at operating temperature i.e. 200 °C The synthesis method and sensing behavior of synthesized ZnO nanorods- like morphology, revealed a promising candidate for fabricating low-consumption gas sensors GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT
