Reducing uncertainty associated with managing technology innovation

This research addresses the challenge of managing uncertainty associated with technology innovation, a process vital for economic growth and organisational sustainability. The study aims to offer novel insights on reducing uncertainty across the different stages of the innovation process by identifying interrelationships between technology innovation success factors. To achieve this, interpretive structural modelling (ISM) and MICMAC (a French acronym, which means “cross-impact matrix-multiplication applied to classification”) were applied as research methodologies, and the directional relationships among success factors in the four stages (concept development, technology development, product development and implementation) of the technology innovation process were determined. Data were collected from a research and technology organisation that specialises in technology innovation. The evaluation revealed essential interconnections and rankings of factors within each innovation stage, and that the interrelationships between the factors vary across the different innovation stages. The original contribution of this study to innovation theory lies in demonstrating that the same success factors manifest differently across various innovation stages. This suggests the necessity of tailored management strategies for each stage, highlighting the need for a stage-specific approach in innovation management practices. Additionally, in terms of practical implications, this research aids managers by providing guidance on identifying the most influential factors and the varying order in which these factors should be prioritised for effective innovation management. The implications of this research extend to practical applications in the field of technology innovation by enabling a better understanding of the varying significance of success factors across different stages. Ultimately, this insight can assist in refining future policy frameworks and strategic planning in technology-oriented organisations. It is recommended that the ISM/MICMAC approach applied to determine the interrelationships and ranking between the success factors for each stage could be formalised into a technique for assessing technology innovation management to reduce uncertainty.

Success Factors for Innovation: A Bayesian Network Approach

The purpose of this study is to understand how innovation factors affect innovation and, at the same time, how the process of innovation factors leading to innovation can explain. This study used Bayesian Network Analysis (BNA) to examine the relationship between innovation factors such as information acquisition, research and development, government support system, product innovation and business process innovation using the 2020 Korean Innovation survey (KIS) data. As a result of the analysis, it confirmed that various factors and innovation had a direct or indirect relationship. For example, it found Government tax support, collaborative R&D and information from private research institutes to play an essential role in innovation, and other factors indirectly affect innovation through these factors. The conclusion section discusses the implications and limitations of research results and suggestions for future research.

Key Success Factors For Supply Chain Management Innovation From Cross-Border Medical Cooperation Under “Belt And Road”

Aim: This article aims to identify key success factors (KSFs) of supply chain management (SCM) innovation and the effect on improving stakeholders value of cross-border medical cooperation platforms between China and countries along the “Belt and Road.”
 Methodology:In this study, a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was used for analysis. For qualitative analysis, the Delphi method achieved two results: firstly, a consensus was reached on the key success factors of SCM innovation, with a consensus rate of over 80%; secondly, the index system of the influence factors of SCM innovation on stakeholder value was improved.
 Results:For quantitative analysis, the Regression Analysis results showed that the five factors of SCM innovation have different degrees of effect on the value of the three groups of stakeholders, which are shown as the improvement of stakeholder value.The results of this study are recommended forstrategy formulation and innovation implementation in supply chain management.
 Conclusion:Each of the five criteria impacted the shareholder value of pharmaceutical corporations, medical care providers, and patients to varying degrees. The results of Regression Analysis revealed a substantial association between SCM innovation and the value of stakeholders. The three hypotheses tested in this study have been confirmed. Five KSF-based SCM innovation has a substantial impact on enhancing the stakeholder value of pharmaceutical businesses, medical care agencies, and patients. This article is intended to assist businesses and individuals in the cross-border medical services market in enhancing the quality and degree of supply chain management.

Venturing and managing disruptive digital innovations: financial management concept motivated propositions

PurposeThere are uncertainties concerning how innovators can successfully venture into disruptive innovations and how incumbents can react to the emergence of such innovations. Disruptive digital innovations, which use information technology to disrupt business contexts and can evolve rapidly to either successes or failures, have unique challenges. The literature has largely remained silent concerning these. Also, existing studies often focus on innovations originating in developed economies and just on successful cases. There is a lack of comparative focus on successful and failure cases emerging across economies. The purpose of this paper is to fill these gaps.Design/methodology/approachThis paper assesses the evolution of disruptive digital innovations in various contexts through a financial management-motivated conceptual framework. Contrary to existing works, this paper focuses on both successful and failure cases and regards the influence of various stakeholders further to innovators and incumbents to explain the successes or failures of the innovation.FindingsThere are some common success factors for disruptive digital innovation. These include an inherent focus on social value, alignment to financiers' interests and rivals' actions and strategic collaborations to create a synergy effect.Research limitations/implicationsInnovators can cause effective digital disruption by focusing on social and financial values. Success can also largely depend on strategic partnerships rather than actions by an individual entity. Thus, venturing and managing disruptive digital innovation is not an isolated but a social process.Originality/valueThis paper recommends propositions for innovators and incumbents to venture into and confront disruptive digital innovations effectively. Its originality lies in focusing on both successful and failure cases, unexplored in literature, to develop the propositions.

Critical success factors for open source innovation in pharma industry: learning from two case studies

PurposeThe study aims to add to the body of knowledge of open source tangible product management (also called open design). The objective is also to develop a guideline for efficient open source tangible product development and adoption.Design/methodology/approachThe exploratory research design using secondary data (like newspapers, magazines, research articles, bogs, papers, etc.) is used to analyze open source tangible product design challenges and enablers. The success stories of Open Source Software projects (OSS) were studied for identification of critical success factors and further their relevancy was tested in the two popular cases of open source drug discovery (malaria and tuberculosis)FindingsOpen innovation has become a part of competitive strategy of current businesses. It requires an efficient intellectual property protection regime for its implementation. However, in a market dominated by proprietary benefits, the open source technology development can serve as remedy for innovation needs of neglected sectors. The OSS literature revealed managing two classes of factors, namely technology sponsor level factors and environmental factors for efficiency and effectiveness. The case study analysis in the context of applicability of these OSS critical factors showed their limitations in open source tangible products, and highlighted understanding additional challenges and remedies.Research limitations/implicationsOpen source innovation is a collaborative effort involving inputs from various/diverse players, hence monitoring the effort and motivation level of the contributors is a cumbersome task. Only the information that is available online and in print media is taken as research inputs in this work. Also the data taken were from two case studies; a lot more case studies in the open design domain can progress the theory. The implications of this study are far-reaching in the areas where profit motivated proprietary efforts lack in addressing societal need. It provides guidelines for addressing those unmet needs by developing products in a collaborative way without intellectual property hurdles.Originality/valueThe essence of open design is becoming more vital, and there is a pressing need to build theory to support it, which still is elusive and dispersed. The study fills the gap using secondary data and case study approach.

Analysis of Changes in Innovative Management of Global Insurers in the Pre- and Post-COVID-19 Eras

This study aims to determine the changes in the innovative management of global insurers in the pre- and post-COVID-19 eras. The keywords of the CEO messages included in the sustainability reports and annual reports of 91 global insurers were used to perform network analysis based on text mining. Specifically, (1) words related to innovation as emphasized in the CEO message of global insurers were extracted, (2) keywords related to innovation in the past three years, of 2018–2020, were compared, and (3) the characteristics of innovative management were analyzed based on the connotations in these words and their structural interpretation. The results showed that the keywords emphasized by the CEOs varied each year; “market” in 2018, “risk” and “value” in 2019, and “people” in 2020. Furthermore, mapping the open innovation success factors based on the keywords extracted according to eigenvector centrality showed that the key factors exhibiting the highest centrality represented the process in 2018, the provision of resources in 2019, and governance in 2020, indicating changes in innovative management. The significance of this study lies in suggesting a directionality of change in post-COVID-19 innovative management for stakeholders, clients, and employees of global insurers.

Decision support for social innovation enabling sustainable development

ABSTRACT This paper offers a unique and powerful bottom-up methodology for social innovation promoting and securing Sustainable development goals (SDG’s) in a wide variety of social innovation contexts founded on a bottom-up approach : it identifies four sustainable development enabling factors, (SDEFs) that make social innovation contributions to sustainability in all its forms. We Employ three level (micro, meso, macro) model of social Innovation. In the first four sections of the paper, we show how the SDEF’s constitute social innovation success factors at the micro level, underpinning in ancient history, the enduing success of the Silk Road network of trade and, in recent history we reveal their role underpinning entrepreneurial innovation clusters bottom up. Yje concluding section shows how social innovation achievements implementing the SDEFs at the micro level can inform successful expansion into new contexts via adaptation and exaptation at the meso level and top-down facilitation at the macro level. .

Critical Success Factors for Circular Business Model Innovation from the Perspective of the Sustainable Development Goals

Circular business model innovation offers a path for the transformation of companies, enhancing resource productivity and efficiency, while also contributing to sustainable development. These fundamental changes in business are accompanied by a variety of challenges and barriers. To support companies on their journey, only a few studies have investigated the critical success factors for circular business model innovation through literature analysis. To contribute to this research, in this study, a methodological approach, mainly based on expert interviews, is proposed to gain in-depth insight into critical success factors for circular business model innovation. As a result, a framework covering critical success factors for circular business model innovation is developed, comprising nine top-codes and 37 sub-codes, and an analysis of each factor’s contribution to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals is performed. The study thereby extends the theoretical basis for further research on circular business model innovation, as well as identifies their practical implications.

Limiting factors of open innovation organizations: A case of social product development and research agenda

While open innovation organizations have grown in popularity, they hold a high failure rate. This paper identifies limiting factors that contribute to this high failure rate at three levels: strategy, process, and community. After validating and expanding these limits through a case study, the paper offers a framework identifying success factors for open innovation and their hierarchical relationships. We classified these success factors into six groups, design, implementation, technology, operation, community readiness, and community development, and their relationships into four groups, deployment, engagement, evaluation, and governance. This framework and the accompanying propositions offer a better theoretical understanding of open innovation models and provide practical recommendations toward their viability, survivability, scalability, and profitability. Lastly, the paper discusses possible research avenues for the further development of open innovation organizations.

Success Factors for Product and Service Innovation: A Critical Literature Review and Proposed Integrative Framework

This paper presents a critical but integrated overview of the factors that play a role in success product and service innovation respectively. The difference between service and product innovation is highlighted. The factors are drawn from a wide and diverse body of academic literature and classified into one of four categories namely strategic, organization, market and development factors. The integrated and summarized overview of critical success factors for innovation should be of considerable importance, not only to practitioners but also for researchers wishing to build an integrated and comprehensive framework for service or product innovation.

Constructs of Project Programme Management Supporting Open Innovation at the Strategic Level of the Organisation

The main aim of the article is to fill the gap concerning the recognition of constructs of programme management supporting open innovations. Current knowledge on this subject is mainly limited to identifying success factors of open innovation and programme management. In the current literature, there are few publications indicating the use of the programme as a tool supporting innovation. In order to fill the identified knowledge gap, common factors of programme success and open innovations were compared and assessed successively. A quantitative study was conducted on an international group of experts, including 578 experts in programme management. As a result of applying cluster analysis and operationalising the obtained results, four programme constructs supporting open innovations were dimensioned, such as cooperation with the environment, transfer of knowledge and technology, organisational maturity, and ensuring and maintaining implementation capacity. Moreover, the discussion and the research revealed that the impact and scope of the structured approach to programme management not only allow for the implementation of the assumed outcomes and benefits at the strategic level, but also influence the shaping and adjustment of the whole organisation.

Sustainability in the Circular Economy: Insights and Dynamics of Designing Circular Business Models

The integration of sustainability in the circular economy is an emerging paradigm that can offer a long term vision to achieve environmental and social sustainability targets in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Developing scalable and sustainable impacts in circular economy business models (CEBMs) has many challenges. While many advanced technology manufacturing firms start as small enterprises, remarkably little is known about how material reuse firms in sociotechnical systems transition towards circular business models. Research into CEBMs integrating sustainability and environmental conservation is still in its early stages. There has been increased interest in sustainability and circular economy research, but current research is fragmented. The innovation surrounding CEBMs eludes some firms with relatively limited evidence of the transitional perspective necessary to integrate aspects of sustainability. This lack of evidence is especially applicable to the context of circular economy practices in small and medium enterprises in the United States regarding capabilities, operations obstacles, and elements of success in designing circular business models. Based on a qualitative, interview-based inductive study of a material reuse firm, our research develops a conceptual model of the critical success factors and obstacles that are part of implementing circular economy practices. Firms must first manage strategic enablers and monitor tactical enablers to achieve sustainability goals. In this study, we identify the underlying enablers of how these capabilities affect the transition to a CEBM that integrates sustainability. The framework emerging from our findings highlights the interplay of CEBM, innovation success factors, and obstacles at a micro-level. The investigation of a material reuse firm serves as the foundation for developing a framework for how managers can alter a company and revise the business model to transition towards a more innovative circular economy.

An optimized model for open innovation success in manufacturing SMES

Given the fluctuations in markets and the financial and resource constraints of SMEs, innovation is one of the solutions for improving performance, gaining competitive advantage and increasing survival probability for these companies. The paper aims to determine the best ranking of effective factors in open innovation success in manufacturing SMEs. At the first stage, the most important factors investigated using structural equation modelling based on the opinion of 275 experts. Subsequently, the impact level of each factor on the others calculated by fuzzy DEMATEL among 12 specialists’ viewpoints. In the end, optimized ranking of studied factors obtained by Ant Colony Optimization algorithm. As a result, economic factors, suppliers, competitors, partners, firm’s strategy, firm’s structure, reward system, employees, IT support, organizational learning, universities, research institutions, and ecological issues hold the first to the thirteenth rank with the highest cumulative impact on open innovation success. Developing relations with universities and research institutions for improving innovation process is recommended to manufacturing SMEs. In addition, these companies should coordinate firm’s strategy as one of the most important open innovation success factors with partners to gain competitive advantages against competitors.

Managing service innovations at online travel agencies: evidence from China

在线旅行社的服务创新管理：中国的实证分析研究目的目前关于在线旅行社(OTA) 的服务创新管理的研究相对贫乏。本研究旨在阐明OTA的服务创新管理的具体元素。研究设计/方法/途径：本研究以携程网（中国最大的在线旅行社）为对象进行深入案例分析。通过改善已有的基于新服务开发;理论（NSD）, 以及综合服务创新成功要素的理论框架从而提出一项连贯的服务创新管理理论框架。基于理论综合以及实证分析，本研究改编，整合和改善了NSD理论框架从而为在线旅行社的服务创新管理框架所适用。研究结果：被提议的理论框架包括三个层面以及相关管理元素：1） 资源，包括利益相关者，科技和系统；2）应用环境，包括创新战略，结构和文化；以及3）构思能力，包括概念生成，概念应用。管理元素与不同的成功要素相结合。这些层面，管理元素和成功因素作为提出框架的组成部分。研究理论限制/启示：本研究为学术领域提供了分析框架，从而进一步了解和诠释了在线旅行社的服务创新，从而作为今后研究的起点。研究实践启示：本分析框架促使在线旅社管理者在服务创新中借用更加结构化的方法，并且鼓励政策制定者来设计相关的干预措施研究原创性/价值：本研究提供了在中国的环境下迈向在线旅社服务创新的第一步。提议的框架对其他产业也存在潜在贡献。

Investigation of key success factors for open innovation and firm performance in Indian IT and ITeS industry: A Systematic Literature Review

Information Technology is a growing industry in India. Currently it constitutes around 7.7% of India’s GDP and the contribution is expected to rise by another 2.3% leading to a 10% share by the year 2025. Broadly the Indian IT sector can be categorized into two. They are the IT services and the IT enabled Services (ITeS). The expansion of the Indian economy has also led to the developments within the country to a large extent. The workforce in the sector constitutes more than 4mn. This field has further more wide opportunities of growth in terms of open innovation and the performances of the firms. Our nation lags behind the other countries of the world in both the terms. Being a nation filled with talents, this is an issue of concern and hence need to be addressed. As a result, a SLR has been prepared to understand the factors responsible for the growth of inventions and breakthroughs in IT and ITES along with those reasons responsible for the performance of any firm. Further research can be done with special focus on the corresponding factors which will prove to be a fruitful one for the IT sector and the Indian economy as a whole.

The COVID Pandemic and Surgical Innovation in the United States.

The SARS-COVID-2019 pandemic of 2020 severely weakened the surgical innovation pipeline and ecosystem, primarily due to factors that include lack of a coordinated federal response, weakened health insurance coverage, a politicized approach to public health and safety, and disruption of the US economy. A successful bench to bedside innovation requires trust in the scientific research, open research and clinical facilities, and participation of patients in clinical studies. In addition, stay-at-home orders and the shutdown of elective medical and surgical care and research laboratories diminished opportunities for the informal interactions that are part of the new product development process. The pandemic and how it was managed prolonged the length of time for creation, adoption, and diffusion of new products and services into the market. Furthermore, the loss of hospital revenues from canceled elective care translates into a much smaller market for new technologies. Looking forward, critical success factors for innovation include federal policy that supports science and offers access and insurance coverage for health care, including addressing social determinants of health. Any further shutdowns of research and clinical care will hinder necessary collaborations between scientists, clinicians, and patients. Economic recovery is required to ensure federal and corporate funding for research and development. Trust in science must be restored to ensure support of necessary regulatory review processes and sufficient participation in clinical trials. Surgical discoveries have brought about lifesaving and life-extending cures, and the pipeline of these discoveries must continue without interruption.

A Comparative Study on Over-The-Tops, Netflix & Amazon Prime Video: Based on the Success Factors of Innovation

We compare Over-the-Tops (OTTs), Netflix and Amazon Prime Video (APV) with five success factors of innovation. Firstly, Netflix offers better personalized service than APV, because APV has collaborative filtering algorithms to recommend safe bets, not the customers really want. Secondly, APV’ user interface is undercooked to lock the members in, even if it has more content and better price offer than Netflix retaining its loyal customers despite the price increase. Thirdly, Netflix has simple subscription model with three tiering, but APV has complicated pricing model having annual and monthly, APV and Prime Video (AV) app, Amazon subscription and extra payment of Amazon Prime Channels (APCs). Fourthly, Amazon has fewer partnership than Netflix especially when it comes to local TV series. Instead, Amazon has live TV channel collaboration including sports content. Lastly, both have strategic and operational agility in their organization well.

A conceptual framework for integrating the critical success factors to service innovation

Abstract: The literature on service innovation has identified many factors that contribute to its success. However, the literature is fragmented concerning identifying and analyzing the critical factors that lead to success in service innovation. This article has two main objectives. First, we describe, analyze, and synthesize these critical factors via a literature review of the research conducted on service innovation. Second, we outline a framework that consists of the most influential Critical Success Factors (CSFs). The systematic literature review analyzed a sample of 317 articles published between 1985 and 2018. The analysis identified 16 of the most influential critical factors that are included in a proposed conceptual framework for service innovation. This article contributes theoretically with an analysis and synthesis of the success factors for service innovation and by offering a practical tool in the form of a conceptual framework that can be used as an analytical tool by firms and their service managers. Furthermore, this study identifies new areas for research in service innovation, focusing on discovering CSFs for service innovation in manufacturing companies, the influence of specific CSFs in organizational performance, or by empirically validating our conceptual framework as well as the impact of new technologies on success innovation factors. In the conclusion, we discuss the limitations of the research and offer suggestions for future studies.

Business innovation and critical success factors in the era of digital transformation and turbulent times

PURPOSE: Explore what entrepreneurship and success factors can help drive business to resilience and stability and achieve competitive advantage through innovation in different countries and business realities in the era of digital transformation and turbulent times. METHODOLOGY: Based on the narrative literature review, we present research findings concerning new strategies and outlooks for business innovation in times of many unknowns. Each organization wants to find its way to gain success and create its unique business model, which can capture value creation and innovativeness and be more adaptive, resilient, and stable in critical moments and sustainable over time. FINDINGS: The articles presented in this issue explore the essential factors of business innovation and success in different organizations and the environments in which these businesses function. IMPLICATIONS FOR THEORY AND PRACTICE: This article synthesizes the presented research field’s importance and relevance, connecting its theoretical background with practical research. Recommendations and implications for future trends of this research stream might also be helpful for professionals and academicians. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: The novel studies presented in this issue were done in five different (developing and developed) countries and business sectors that present human-based and non-human-based factors as crucial factors needed to empower business transformation in a complex world. Each group of elements is essential in business success, and their components are interdependent. We need to look at the interactions and interdependencies of their components in a dynamic and network form and cannot simplify the reality, focusing only on one group of business components and ignoring the other. These unique studies provide a valuable outlook to establish dynamic, adaptive business pathways towards a sustainable and resilient organizational future and propose future research paths needed to execute structural changes in businesses.

Scaling Up Niche Circular Food Solutions: Factors for Successful Scale Up in Toronto, Canada

This research seeks to find success factors for niche circular food innovations to scale up. Using Toronto, Canada as a case study, we analyze eleven niche circular food solutions to find success and barrier factors they face in scaling up to become mainstream. Data was collected via questionnaires and interviews, resulting in five categories of factors that either help or hinder niche circular food innovations. A statistical correlation analysis is performed. The most successful businesses were those that operated in more than one stage of the food chain, had at least 2-3 years to stabilize their performance, and had financial investors. Government involvement supported innovations through small grants, but many did not seek government support in order to protect their environmental priorities. We also found COVID-19 as a disruptive situation that led to more opportunities for niche food innovations.
