Impaired Generation of Transit-Amplifying Progenitors in the Adult Subventricular Zone of Cyclin D2 Knockout Mice.

In the adult brain, new neurons are constitutively derived from postnatal neural stem cells/progenitors located in two neurogenic regions: the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricles (migrating and differentiating into different subtypes of the inhibitory interneurons of the olfactory bulbs), and the subgranular layer of the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Cyclin D2 knockout (cD2-KO) mice exhibit reduced numbers of new hippocampal neurons; however, the proliferation deficiency and the dysregulation of adult neurogenesis in the SVZ required further investigation. In this report, we characterized the differentiation potential of each subpopulation of the SVZ neural precursors in cD2-KO mice. The number of newly generated cells in the SVZs was significantly decreased in cD2-KO mice compared to wild type mice (WT), and was not accompanied by elevated levels of apoptosis. Although the number of B1-type quiescent precursors (B1q) and the overall B1-type activated precursors (B1a) were not affected in the SVZ neurogenic niche, the number of transit-amplifying progenitors (TaPs) was significantly reduced. Additionally, the subpopulations of calbindin D28k and calretinin interneurons were diminished in the olfactory bulbs of cD2-KO mice. Our results suggest that cyclin D2 might be critical for the proliferation of neural precursors and progenitors in the SVZ—the transition of B1a into TaPs and, thereafter, the production of newly generated interneurons in the olfactory bulbs. Untangling regulators that functionally modulate adult neurogenesis provides a basis for the development of regenerative therapies for injuries and neurodegenerative diseases.

Subventricular zone neural precursor cell responses after traumatic brain injury and binge alcohol in male rats.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of disability worldwide. Additionally, many TBI patients are intoxicated with alcohol at the time of injury, but the impact of acute intoxication on recovery from brain injury is not well understood. We have previously found that binge alcohol prior to TBI impairs spontaneous functional sensorimotor recovery. However, whether alcohol administration in this setting affects reactive neurogenesis after TBI is not known. This study, therefore, sought to determine the short- and long-term effects of pre-TBI binge alcohol on neural precursor cell responses in the subventricular zone (SVZ) following brain injury in male rats. We found that TBI alone significantly increased proliferation in the SVZ as early as 24hr after injury. Surprisingly, binge alcohol alone also significantly increased proliferation in the SVZ after 24hr. However, a combined binge alcohol and TBI regimen resulted in decreased TBI-induced proliferation in the SVZ at 24hr and 1week post-TBI. Furthermore, at 6weeks after TBI, binge alcohol administered at the time of TBI significantly decreased the TBI-induced neuroblast response in the SVZ and the rostral migratory stream (RMS). The results from this study suggest that pre-TBI binge alcohol negatively impacts reparative processes in the brain by decreasing short-term neural precursor cell proliferative responses as well as long-term neuroblasts in the SVZ and RMS.

Enriched housing promotes post-stroke neurogenesis through calpain 1-STAT3/HIF-1α/VEGF signaling

Enriched environment (EE) has been shown to promote neurogenesis and functional recovery after ischemic stroke. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, C57BL/6 mice underwent middle cerebral artery occlusion (60 min) followed by reperfusion, after which mice were housed in either standard environment (SE) or EE and allowed to survive for 3, 4, 6 or 10 weeks. Ipsilateral subventricular zone (SVZ) or striatum cells were dissociated from ischemic hemispheric brains of enriched mice at 14 days post-ischemia (dpi) and cultured in vitro. Our data showed that post-ischemic EE inhibited calpain 1 activity, and increased the expression of phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (p-STAT3) in the ischemic hemisphere of enriched mice at 21 dpi. Calpain 1-specific inhibitor PD151746 further increased p-STAT3 expression and augmented the promoting effects of EE on post-stroke SVZ neural precursor cells (NPCs) proliferation and functional recovery. EE also increased the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the ischemic hemisphere at 21 dpi. Inhibition of the JAK/STAT3 pathway with AG490 decreased the expression of HIF-1α and VEGF. Furthermore, inhibition of HIF-1α with 2-methoxyestradiol robustly abolished EE-induced elevation of VEGF l expression. Furthermore, VEGF-A promoted the production and secretion of high mobility group box-1 protein (HMGB1) from reactive astrocytes in vitro. Culture supernatant from reactive astrocytes treated with VEGF-A promoted the proliferation and differentiation of NPCs. Glycyrrhizin reversed the promoting effects of EE on post-stroke neurorepair and functional recovery in vivo. Taken together, our data indicate that EE promotes post-stroke functional recovery through the inhibition of calpain 1 activity, and subsequent STAT3-HIF-1α-VEGF-mediated neurogenesis.

What is CAR doing in the middle of the adult neurogenic road?

The molecular and cellular basis of adult neurogenesis has attracted considerable attention for fundamental and clinical applications because neural stem cells and newborn neurons may, one day, be harnessed to replace neurons and allow cognitive improvement in the diseased brain. In rodents, neural progenitors are located in the dentate gyrus and the sub/periventricular zone. In the dentate gyrus the generation of newborn neurons is associated with plasticity, including regulation of memory. The role of subventricular zone neural precursors that migrate to the olfactory bulb is less characterized. Identifying factors that impact neural stem cell proliferation, migration and differentiation is therefore sine qua non before we can harness their potential. Here, we expand upon our recent results showing that CAR, the coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor, is among the developing list of key players when it comes to the complex process of integrating newborn neurons into existing circuits in the mature brain.

Evolutionary origin of Tbr2‐expressing precursor cells and the subventricular zone in the developing cortex

ABSTRACTThe subventricular zone (SVZ) is greatly expanded in primates with gyrencephalic cortices and is thought to be absent from vertebrates with three‐layered, lissencephalic cortices, such as the turtle. Recent work in rodents has shown that Tbr2‐expressing neural precursor cells in the SVZ produce excitatory neurons for each cortical layer in the neocortex. Many excitatory neurons are generated through a two‐step process in which Pax6‐expressing radial glial cells divide in the VZ to produce Tbr2‐expressing intermediate progenitor cells, which divide in the SVZ to produce cortical neurons. We investigated the evolutionary origin of SVZ neural precursor cells in the prenatal cerebral cortex by testing for the presence and distribution of Tbr2‐expressing cells in the prenatal cortex of reptilian and avian species. We found that mitotic Tbr2+ cells are present in the prenatal cortex of lizard, turtle, chicken, and dove. Furthermore, Tbr2+ cells are organized into a distinct SVZ in the dorsal ventricular ridge (DVR) of turtle forebrain and in the cortices of chicken and dove. Our results are consistent with the concept that Tbr2+ neural precursor cells were present in the common ancestor of mammals and reptiles. Our data also suggest that the organizing principle guiding the assembly of Tbr2+ cells into an anatomically distinct SVZ, both developmentally and evolutionarily, may be shared across vertebrates. Finally, our results indicate that Tbr2 expression can be used to test for the presence of a distinct SVZ and to define the boundaries of the SVZ in developing cortices. J. Comp. Bone morphogenetic protein dominantly suppresses epidermal growth factor-induced proliferative expansion of adult forebrain neural precursors.

A single asymmetric division by an adult neural stem cell (NSC) ultimately generates dozens of differentiated progeny, a feat made possible by the proliferative expansion of transit-amplifying progenitor cells (TAPs). Although NSC activation and TAP expansion is determined by pro- and anti-proliferative signals found within the niche, remarkably little is known about how these cells integrate simultaneous conflicting signals. We investigated this question focusing on the subventricular zone (SVZ) niche of the adult murine forebrain. Using primary cultures of SVZ cells, we demonstrate that Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) and Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP)-2 are particularly powerful pro- and anti-proliferative factors for SVZ-derived neural precursors. Dose-response experiments showed that when simultaneously exposed to both signals, BMP dominantly suppressed EGF-induced proliferation; moreover, this dominance extended to all parameters of neural precursor behavior tested, including inhibition of proliferation, modulation of cell cycle, promotion of differentiation, and increase of cell death. BMP's anti-proliferative effect did not involve inhibition of mTORC1 or ERK signaling, key mediators of EGF-induced proliferation, and had distinct stage-specific consequences, promoting TAP differentiation but NSC quiescence. In line with these in vitro data, in vivo experiments showed that exogenous BMP limits EGF-induced proliferation of TAPs while inhibition of BMP-SMAD signaling promotes activation of quiescent NSCs. These findings clarify the stage-specific effects of BMPs on SVZ neural precursors, and support a hierarchical model in which the anti-proliferative effects of BMP dominate over EGF proliferation signaling to constitutively drive TAP differentiation and NSC quiescence.

Insulin-like Growth Factor-II (IGF-II) and IGF-II Analogs with Enhanced Insulin Receptor-a Binding Affinity Promote Neural Stem Cell Expansion

The objective of this study was to employ genetically engineered IGF-II analogs to establish which receptor(s) mediate the stemness promoting actions of IGF-II on mouse subventricular zone neural precursors. Neural precursors from the subventricular zone were propagated in vitro in culture medium supplemented with IGF-II analogs. Cell growth and identity were analyzed using sphere generation and further analyzed by flow cytometry. F19A, an analog of IGF-II that does not bind the IGF-2R, stimulated an increase in the proportion of neural stem cells (NSCs) while decreasing the proportion of the later stage progenitors at a lower concentration than IGF-II. V43M, which binds to the IGF-2R with high affinity but which has low binding affinity to the IGF-1R and to the A isoform of the insulin receptor (IR-A) failed to promote NSC growth. The positive effects of F19A on NSC growth were unaltered by the addition of a functional blocking antibody to the IGF-1R. Altogether, these data lead to the conclusion that IGF-II promotes stemness of NSCs via the IR-A and not through activation of either the IGF-1R or the IGF-2R.

Effects of Allogeneic Bone Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Therapy on Voiding Function in a Rat Model of Parkinson Disease

Cellular therapy induced transient urodynamic improvement in a rat model of Parkinson disease in which bladder dysfunction was noted after unilateral injection of 6-hydroxydopamine into the medial forebrain bundle. We sought to prolong the effect by injecting allogeneic rat bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells before and after microencapsulation into the substantia nigra pars compacta. Female rats underwent unilateral stereotactic injection of 6-hydroxydopamine in the medial forebrain bundle. Injection was performed in the ipsilateral substantia nigra pars compacta using vehicle alone or vehicle with nonmicroencapsulated or microencapsulated rat bone marrow derived mesenchymal stromal cells. Rats were evaluated by cystometry 7, 14, 28 and 42 days after treatment. Brains were extracted for immunostaining. At 42 days the nonmicroencapsulated group had lower threshold and intermicturition pressure, spontaneous activity and AUC than vehicle treated animals. Rats that received microencapsulated cells had lower threshold pressure at 28 days and lower spontaneous activity at 42 days than vehicle treated rats. Microencapsulated and nonmicroencapsulated rat bone marrow derived mesenchymal stromal cells were noted in the substantia nigra pars compacta up to 42 days after transplantation. At 42 days tyrosine hydroxylase positive neurons were more numerous in the substantia nigra pars compacta of the nonmicroencapsulated group, followed by the microencapsulated and vehicle treated groups. Urodynamic effects of the 6-hydroxydopamine lesion persisted up to 42 days after vehicle injection. Transplantation of nonmicroencapsulated rat bone marrow derived mesenchymal stromal cells improved urodynamic pressure by 42 days after treatment more markedly than microencapsulated cells. This was associated with more tyrosine hydroxylase positive neurons in the treated substantia nigra pars compacta of the nonmicroencapsulated group, suggesting that functional improvement requires a juxtacrine effect.

GH Mediates Exercise-Dependent Activation of SVZ Neural Precursor Cells in Aged Mice

Here we demonstrate, both in vivo and in vitro, that growth hormone (GH) mediates precursor cell activation in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the aged (12-month-old) brain following exercise, and that GH signaling stimulates precursor activation to a similar extent to exercise. Our results reveal that both addition of GH in culture and direct intracerebroventricular infusion of GH stimulate neural precursor cells in the aged brain. In contrast, no increase in neurosphere numbers was observed in GH receptor null animals following exercise. Continuous infusion of a GH antagonist into the lateral ventricle of wild-type animals completely abolished the exercise-induced increase in neural precursor cell number. Given that the aged brain does not recover well after injury, we investigated the direct effect of exercise and GH on neural precursor cell activation following irradiation. This revealed that physical exercise as well as infusion of GH promoted repopulation of neural precursor cells in irradiated aged animals. Conversely, infusion of a GH antagonist during exercise prevented recovery of precursor cells in the SVZ following irradiation.

PEDF Is a Novel Oligodendrogenic Morphogen Acting on the Adult SVZ and Corpus Callosum

Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is a serine protease inhibitor (serpin) protein with well established neuroprotective and anti-angiogenic properties. Recent studies have also shown that PEDF enhances renewal of adult subventricular zone (SVZ) neural precursors. In neurosphere cultures prepared from the SVZ of adult mice, we found that addition of recombinant PEDF to the medium enhanced expressions of oligodendroglial lineage markers (NG2 and PDGFrα) and transcription factors (Olig1, Olig2, and Sox10). Similarly, continuous PEDF administration into the lateral ventricles of adult glial fibrillary acidic protein:green fluorescent protein (GFAP:GFP) transgenic mice increased the proportions of GFAP:GFP+ and GFAP:GFP- SVZ neural precursors coexpressing oligodendroglial lineage markers and transcription factors. Notably, PEDF infusion also resulted in an induction of doublecortin- and Sox10 double-positive cells in the adult SVZ. Immunoreactive PEDF receptor was detectable in multiple cell types in both adult SVZ and corpus callosum. Furthermore, PEDF intracerebral infusion enhanced survival and maturation of newly born oligodendroglial progenitor cells in the normal corpus callosum, and accelerated oligodendroglial regeneration in lysolecithin-induced corpus callosum demyelinative lesions. Western blot analysis showed a robust upregulation of endogenous PEDF in the corpus callosum upon lysolecithin-induced demyelination. Our results document previously unrecognized oligodendrotrophic effects of recombinant PEDF on the adult SVZ and corpus callosum, demonstrate induction of endogenous CNS PEDF production following demyelination, and make PEDF a strong candidate for pharmacological intervention in demyelinative diseases.

Rapid Transgene Expression in Multiple Precursor Cell Types of Adult Rat Subventricular Zone Mediated by Adeno-Associated Type 1 Vectors

The adult rat brain subventricular zone (SVZ) contains proliferative precursors that migrate to the olfactory bulb (OB) and differentiate into mature neurons. Recruitment of precursors constitutes a potential avenue for brain repair. We have investigated the kinetics and cellular specificity of transgene expression mediated by AAV2/1 vectors (i.e., adeno-associated virus type 2 pseudotyped with AAV1 capsid) in the SVZ. Self-complementary (sc) and single-stranded (ss) AAV2/1 vectors mediated efficient GFP expression, respectively, at 17 and 24 hr postinjection. Transgene expression was efficient in all the rapidly proliferating cells types, that is, Mash1(+) precursors (30% of the GFP(+) cells), Dlx2(+) neuronal progenitors (55%), Olig2(+) oligodendrocyte progenitors (35%), and doublecortin-positive (Dcx(+)) migrating cells (40%), but not in the slowly proliferating glial fibrillary acidic protein-positive (GFAP(+)) neural stem cell pool (5%). Because cell cycle arrest by wild-type and recombinant AAV has been described in primary cultures, we examined SVZ proliferative activity after vector injection. Indeed, cell proliferation was reduced immediately after vector injection but was normal after 1 month. In contrast, migration and differentiation of GFP(+) precursors were unaltered. Indeed, the proportion of Dcx(+) cells was similar in the injected and contralateral hemispheres. Furthermore, 1 month after vector injection into the SVZ, GFP(+) cells, found, as expected, in the OB granular cell layer, were mature GABAergic neurons. In conclusion, the rapid and efficient transgene expression in SVZ neural precursors mediated by scAAV2/1 vectors underlines their potential usefulness for brain repair via recruitment of immature cells. The observed transient precursor proliferation inhibition, not affecting their migration and differentiation, will likely not compromise this strategy.

Proneural transcription factors Dlx2 and Pax6 are altered in adult SVZ neural precursor cells following striatal cell loss

Compensatory replacement of neurons by endogenous subventricular zone (SVZ)-derived neural precursor cells has been demonstrated in the adult brain following striatal cell loss. Such cell replacement is associated with increased SVZ cell proliferation and neuroblast expansion in the rostral migratory stream (RMS). SVZ-derived neural precursor cells co-express multiple transcription factors involved in lineage restriction and cell fate determination. We propose that compensatory neurogenesis in response to striatal cell loss will alter the temporal expression of transcription factors in discrete populations of SVZ-derived neural precursor cells. We therefore examined the expression of Mash1, Dlx2, Pax6 and Olig2 in SVZ-derived neural precursor cell populations across a range of times following quinolinic acid (QA) induced striatal cell death. We have identified a heterogeneous population of SVZ-derived neural precursor cells that respond independently to striatal cell loss. In both the anterior SVZ (aSVZ) and RMS we observed an increase in a sub-population of Dlx2+ transit amplifying precursor (TAP) cells and neuroblasts following QA lesioning when compared to controls. Subsequently, the number of Pax6+ TAPs and neuroblasts in the QA lesioned aSVZ and RMS was also increased. Olig2 expression was not however altered in response to QA-induced cell loss. Our results suggest Dlx2 and Pax6 may play a prominent role in directing neural precursor cell proliferation and neuroblast generation following striatal cell loss. Selective alteration of specific transcription factors in the SVZ and during migration through the RMS in response to cell loss may predetermine the subsequent generation of specific neuronal subclasses for endogenous replacement.

Relationship of Adult Neurogenesis with Tau Phosphorylation and GSK-3β Activity in Subventricular Zone

Altered neurogenesis has been reported in Alzheimer disease (AD), the most common neurodegenerative disorder characterized with hyperphosphorylated tau and accumulation of β-amyloid (Aβ). Recent studies suggest that tau phosphorylation is essential for hippocampal neurogenesis, however, it is not known whether tau phosphorylation also play a role in neurogenesis of subventricular zone (SVZ), another main progenitor niche in the brain. Here, we examined the expression of phosphorylated tau (p-tau) in SVZ and analyzed the role of p-tau in adult SVZ neurogenesis. We found that the expression of p-tau increased during postnatal development and remains at a high level until adulthood, and the p-tau was colocalized with some SVZ neural precursors. However, up-regulating glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3), a crucial tau kinase, had no effect on SVZ neurogenesis in adult rat brain. The SVZ neurogenesis was also unaffected in tau knockout and human tau transgenic mice. These results suggest that tau phosphorylation and GSK-3 activation may not be essential for adult SVZ neurogenesis.

Modulation of bone morphogenic protein signalling alters numbers of astrocytes and oligodendroglia in the subventricular zone during cuprizone‐induced demyelination

The adult subventricular zone (SVZ) is a potential source of precursor cells to replace neural cells lost during demyelination. To better understand the molecular events that regulate neural precursor cell responsiveness in this context we undertook a microarray and quantitative PCR based analysis of genes expressed within the SVZ during cuprizone-induced demyelination. We identified an up-regulation of the genes encoding bone morphogenic protein 4 (BMP4) and its receptors. Immunohistochemistry confirmed an increase in BMP4 protein levels and also showed an increase in phosphorylated SMAD 1/5/8, a key component of BMP4 signalling, during demyelination. In vitro analysis revealed that neural precursor cells isolated from demyelinated animals, as well as those treated with BMP4, produce more astrocytes. Similarly, there were increased numbers of astrocytes in vivo within the SVZ during demyelination. Intraventricular infusion of Noggin, an endogenous antagonist of BMP4, during cuprizone-induced demyelination reduced pSMAD1/5/8, decreased astrocyte numbers and increased oligodendrocyte numbers in the SVZ. Our results suggest that lineage commitment of SVZ neural precursor cells is altered during demyelination and that BMP signalling plays a role in this process.

Transplantation of subventricular zone neural precursors induces an endogenous precursor cell response in a rat model of Parkinson's disease

Realistically, future stem cell therapies for neurological conditions including Parkinson's disease (PD) will most probably entail combination treatment strategies, involving both the stimulation of endogenous cells and transplantation. Therefore, this study investigates these two modes of neural precursor cell (NPC) therapy in concert in order to determine their interrelationships in a rat PD model. Human placental alkaline phosphatase (hPAP)-labeled NPCs were transplanted unilaterally into host rats which were subsequently infused ipsilaterally with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). The reaction of host NPCs to the transplantation and 6-OHDA was tracked by bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) labeling. Two weeks after transplantation, in animals transplanted with NPCs we found evidence of elevated host subventricular zone NPC proliferation, neurogenesis, and migration to the graft site. In these animals, we also observed a significant preservation of striatal tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression and substantia nigra TH cell number. We have seen no evidence that neuroprotection is a product of dopamine neuron replacement by NPC-derived cells. Rather, the NPCs expressed glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), sonic hedgehog (Shh), and stromal cell-derived factor 1 alpha (SDF1alpha), providing a molecular basis for the observed neuroprotection and endogenous NPC response to transplantation. In summary, our data suggests plausible synergy between exogenous and endogenous NPC actions, and that NPC implantation before the 6-OHDA insult can create a host microenvironment conducive to stimulation of endogenous NPCs and protection of mature nigral neurons.

Once and again: Retinoic acid signaling in the developing and regenerating olfactory pathway

Retinoic acid (RA), a member of the steroid/thyroid superfamily of signaling molecules, is an essential regulator of morphogenesis, differentiation, and regeneration in the mammalian olfactory pathway. RA-mediated teratogenesis dramatically alters olfactory pathway development, presumably by disrupting retinoid-mediated inductive signaling that influences initial olfactory epithelium (OE) and bulb (OB) morphogenesis. Subsequently, RA modulates the genesis, growth, or stability of subsets of OE cells and OB interneurons. RA receptors, cofactors, and synthetic enzymes are expressed in the OE, OB, and anterior subventricular zone (SVZ), the site of neural precursors that generate new OB interneurons throughout adulthood. Their expression apparently accommodates RA signaling in OE cells, OB interneurons, and slowly dividing SVZ neural precursors. Deficiency of vitamin A, the dietary metabolic RA precursor, leads to cytological changes in the OE, as well as olfactory sensory deficits. Vitamin A therapy in animals with olfactory system damage can accelerate functional recovery. RA-related pathology as well as its potential therapeutic activity may reflect endogenous retinoid regulation of neuronal differentiation, stability, or regeneration in the olfactory pathway from embryogenesis through adulthood. These influences may be in register with retinoid effects on immune responses, metabolism, and modulation of food intake.

Neonatal hypoxic–ischemic injury increases forebrain subventricular zone neurogenesis in the mouse

Neurogenesis persists throughout life in the rodent subventricular zone (SVZ)–olfactory bulb pathway and increases in the adult after brain insults. The influence of neonatal injury on SVZ neural precursors is unknown. We examined the effects of hypoxia–ischemia (HI) on neonatal mouse SVZ cell proliferation and neurogenesis. Postnatal day 10 (P10) mice underwent right carotid artery ligation followed by 10% O 2 exposure for 45 min. The SVZ area and hemispheric injury were quantified morphometrically 1–3 weeks later. Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was used to label proliferating cells, and cell phenotypes of the progeny were identified by immunohistochemistry. HI significantly enlarged the ipsilateral SVZ at P18, P24, and P31, and increases in the SVZ area correlated directly with the degree of hemispheric damage. Neonatal hypoxic?ischemic injury increases forebrain subventricular zone neurogenesis in the mouse

Neurogenesis persists throughout life in the rodent subventricular zone (SVZ)–olfactory bulb pathway and increases in the adult after brain insults. The influence of neonatal injury on SVZ neural precursors is unknown. We examined the effects of hypoxia–ischemia (HI) on neonatal mouse SVZ cell proliferation and neurogenesis. Postnatal day 10 (P10) mice underwent right carotid artery ligation followed by 10% O 2 exposure for 45 min. The SVZ area and hemispheric injury were quantified morphometrically 1–3 weeks later. Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was used to label proliferating cells, and cell phenotypes of the progeny were identified by immunohistochemistry. HI significantly enlarged the ipsilateral SVZ at P18, P24, and P31, and increases in the SVZ area correlated directly with the degree of hemispheric damage.
