Reinforcing Nitrogen Nutrition Through Partial Substitution with Organic Nitrogen Enhances the Properties of Natural Rubber

The partial substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic fertilizer is a crucial practice for enhancing crop production and quality, although its impact on natural rubber has rarely been explored. In this study, a two-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of different nitrogen application rates and varying proportions of organic nitrogen substitution on dry rubber yield, nitrogen nutrition, and natural rubber properties. Regarding nitrogen application, the control treatment received no nitrogen amendment, while the low-nitrogen treatment was amended with 138 g·tree−1·year−1 of nitrogen. The medium-nitrogen treatment received 276 g·tree−1·year−1 of nitrogen, and the high-nitrogen treatment received 552 g·tree−1·year−1 of nitrogen. In addition, the low-organic-nitrogen substitution treatment and medium-organic-nitrogen substitution treatment were amended with 276 g·tree−1·year−1 of nitrogen each. The results demonstrated that the 50% organic nitrogen substitution treatment resulted in the highest dry rubber yield across all sampling periods, ranging from 46.43 to 94.65 g·tree−1. Additionally, this treatment exhibited superior soil total nitrogen (1067.69 mg·kg−1), available nitrogen (84.06 mg·kg−1), and nitrogen content in roots (1.08%), leaves (3.25%), fresh rubber latex (0.27%), and raw natural rubber (0.44%) compared with other treatments. In terms of the physical properties of natural rubber, the 50% organic nitrogen substitution treatment resulted in advantages in the weight-average molecular weight (1.57 × 106 g·mol−1), number-average molecular weight (0.36 × 106 g·mol−1), plasticity retention index (97.35%), Wallace plasticity (40.25), and Mooney viscosity (81.40). For mechanical properties, natural rubber from the substitution treatment exhibited higher tensile strength (19.84 MPa), greater elongation at break (834.75%), and increased tear strength (31.07 N·mm−1). Overall, the substitution of 50% chemical nitrogen fertilizer with organic nitrogen fertilizer improved nitrogen nutrition in rubber trees by introducing organic nitrogen input, resulting in remarkable enhancements in natural rubber properties. Therefore, the incorporation of organic fertilizer as a substitution for 50% of chemical fertilizer is demonstrated as an effective strategy for improving both the yield and properties of natural rubber.

Long-term manure and/or straw substitution mediates phosphorus species and the phosphorus-solubilizing microorganism community in soil aggregation

The partially substitution of chemical fertilizers with organic materials can improve soil phosphorus (P) availability; however, the response of aggregate-associated P species and the microbial community remains unclear. We investigated P speciation transformation and the related microbial community of aggregates in a 10-year field trial containing chemical fertilizer (CC), 50 % chemical N replaced by pig manure, corn straw, and manure combined with straw. Compared to CC, the organic substitute pattern increased soil aggregate stability indices, which were positively correlated with labile and moderately labile P. The organic substitution pattern improved labile and moderately labile P in > 2 mm large macroaggregates (LM) and 0.25–2 mm macroaggregates (MA), and decreased labile P in 0.053–0.25 mm microaggregates (MI) and < 0.053 mm silt + clay (SC). CaHPO4 and MgHPO4 of labile P were the primary components in MA, while Ca(H2PO4)2 was the primary component in MI. Straw addition enhanced the relative abundance of P-solubilizing microorganisms, primarily Bacillus, in different aggregates. The labile P content was higher, and the microbial network displayed higher complexity and connectivity in MI than in aggregates of other sizes. pH was the most critical factor influencing the distribution of P species in the LM. Organic carbon and aggregate stability index were the primary factors in MA, whereas phosphatase activity was the primary factor in MI and SC. Overall, the organic substitution pattern improved aggregate stability and labile P content in LM and MA and reduced labile P in MI and SC, thereby promoting P retention. These insights advance our understanding the effects of organic fertilization on P transformation in soil aggregates, with implications for developing eco-friendly P management strategies.

Reducing nitrogen fertilizer usage coupled with organic substitution improves soil quality and boosts tea yield and quality in tea plantations.

The utilization of chemical fertilizers is a key measure for maintaining tea yield and quality, but excessive use has negative environmental impacts. The substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic fertilizer has been promoted to sustain crop yield and soil quality. However, knowledge gaps regarding the effects of organic substitution on soil quality and tea yield in tea plantations still exist. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of organic substitution treatments (i.e. 25% partial substitution: biogas slurry + green manure + formula fertilizer, BFG; sheep manure + formula fertilizer, OFF; 100% complete substitution: sheep manure + green manure, OG) on the soil quality, tea yield and quality, and nitrogen utilization efficiency in southwestern China. Results showed that all organic substitution treatments slightly increased soil pH, and significantly increased soil organic matter by 13.22-14.88% compared to conventional fertilization (CF). The BFG treatment was the most effective in enhancing the soil quality index, showing increases of 16.80%, 8.37% and 24.87% higher than the CF, OFF and OG treatments, respectively. Tea yield significantly increased under the BFG, OFF and OG treatments by 11.97%, 13.58% and 5.90% compared to CF, respectively. The BFG treatment increased the amino acid content by 7.78% and decreased the tea polyphenol/amino acid ratio by 6.87%. Additionally, the BFG, OFF and OG treatments greatly increased the nitrogen utilization efficiency of young sprouts by 70.71%, 82.54% and 34.28%, respectively. Overall, partial organic substitution could effectively improve soil quality while maintaining tea yield. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Enhancing Maize Yield and Nutrient Utilization through Improved Soil Quality under Reduced Fertilizer Use: The Efficacy of Organic–Inorganic Compound Fertilizer

Objectives: The substitution of chemical fertilizers with organic alternatives presents a viable strategy for enhancing soil quality and boosting agricultural productivity. However, the question remains whether organic–inorganic compound fertilizers (COIFs) can sustain improved soil quality and crop yields while reducing chemical fertilizer use. The underlying mechanisms of COIF’s impact still warrant further exploration. Methods: In this study, a long-term fertilization trial was conducted from 2020 to 2023 at two sites with different soil textures and types in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, China. The experiment involved three fertilization treatments, each replicated three times: (1) LCF (conventional fertilizer treatment); (2) COIF1 (COIF applied at 90% of the recommended rate); and (3) COIF2 (COIF applied at 80% of the recommended rate). The objective was to assess the effects of COIF on summer maize growth, grain yield, nutrient uptake and utilization, and soil quality. Results: Compared to LCF, COIF1 in Yantai and Dezhou increased biomass by 6.4% and 8.1%, grain yield by 5.9% and 4.12%, PFP (N, P, and K) by 17.6% and 15.7%, and soil quality by 563.6% and 462.5%, respectively. No significant differences in biomass and grain yield were observed between COIF2 and LCF, yet COIF1 in Yantai and Dezhou enhanced PFP (N, P, and K) by 19.7% and 18.6%, and soil quality by 109.1% and 175.0%, respectively. In conclusion, COIF improved soil quality by enhancing soil organic matter (SOM), available nutrients, pH, and other soil indices. It promoted summer maize growth, increased grain yield, and improved nutrient utilization. COIF was a practical and effective measure to reduce chemical fertilizer use, enhance field soil quality, and ultimately increase maize yield and nutrient utilization.

Substitution of Chemical Fertilizer with Organic MOL Fertilizer to Increase Crop Productivity

Agriculture in Indonesia faces major challenges in terms of sustainability and productivity, especially with the high dependence on chemical fertilizers that can damage the soil in the long run. This study aims to determine the impact of chemical fertilizer substitution with MOL organic fertilizer on rice productivity in Village X, East Java. This research used a quantitative approach with a comparative case study. Data were collected during one rice growing season from two treatment groups using different fertilizers. Primary data were obtained through field observation, direct measurement, and sample analysis, while secondary data were collected from village reports and previous studies. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results showed that chemical fertilizer increased rice productivity higher in the short term than MOL organic fertilizer. Independent T-test results showed significant differences, with chemical fertilizers producing significantly higher yields (t-value 12.45, p-value 2.306). However, the use of chemical fertilizers negatively impacts soil quality and the environment in the long run. In contrast, MOL organic fertilizer improved soil quality despite lower yields. SEM analysis showed that the substitution of chemical fertilizer with MOL organic fertilizer had a significant effect but with a smaller estimated coefficient compared to the use of chemical fertilizer. MOL organic fertilizer provides long-term benefits by improving soil fertility so that to achieve high production and protect the environment, a combination of using chemical fertilizers at optimal doses and gradually using organic fertilizers is highly recommended to support sustainable agriculture.

Lime Application Reduces Methane Emissions Induced by Pig Manure Substitution from a Double-Cropped Rice Field

Abstract: The substitution of chemical fertilizers with organic manure plays a critical role in sustainable crop production. Nevertheless, organic amendments promote the global warming potential (GWP) in rice paddies due to increased methane (CH4) emissions. Increasing evidence shows that lime application can reduce CH4 emissions from acidic paddy soils; however, it is still not clear whether liming can reduce the GWP in rice fields under organic manure substitution. A two-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the impacts of pig manure substitution and lime application on grain yield, CH4 and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in a subtropical double-cropped rice field in China. The experiment consisted of three treatments: CF (100% chemical nitrogen fertilizer), 1/2N + M (50% of the applied nitrogen substituted by pig manure, M represents manure), and 1/2N + M + L (lime amendment with 50% of the applied nitrogen substituted with pig manure, L represents lime). On average, 1/2N + M reduced rice yield by 5.65% compared to CF, while the lime application had no effect on rice yield. Mean cumulative CH4 emissions were 218.8% higher in 1/2N + M than in CF, whereas 1/2N + M + L reduced CH4 emissions by 36.6% compared to 1/2N + M. Neither pig manure substitution nor lime application affected N2O emissions. Consequently, 1/2N + M increased the GWP and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) by 214.6% and 228.3%, respectively, compared to CF. In contrast, 1/2N + M + L reduced the GWP and GHGI by 36.4% and 36.5% compared to 1/2N + M. Lime application can mitigate CH4 emissions and GWP induced by pig manure amendment in double-cropped rice fields.

Organic fertilizer substitution benefits microbial richness and wheat yield under warming

Climate warming poses a serious threat to soil biodiversity and crop yield. Application of organic fertilizer has been extensively practiced to improve soil health and crop productivity. However, information is limited about the effects of organic fertilizer on microbial communities and diversity (richness) under warming. Thus, to investigate the interactive effects of temperature (ambient temperature and warming) and fertilizer (chemical fertilizer and partial substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic fertilizer) on microbial properties and wheat yield, a two-factorial pot experiment was conducted using soils with high and low fertility The results showed that warming and organic fertilizer had minor effects on bacterial Shannon and Simpson indexes. Due to concomitant reductions in soil moisture, warming decreased the average Chao index by 5.4 % and Ace index by 3.8 % for soils with high and low fertility (P < 0.05). High-throughput sequence presented that dominated genus was Bacillus with spore-forming ability. Under warming and drying conditions, microbes with adaptive traits (spore-forming ability) would outcompete the other microbes, and decrease microbial Chao and Ace index (richness). However, organic fertilizer counteracted the adverse effects of warming on microbial richness attributed to positive interaction between temperature and fertilizer on soil nutrients and organic carbon. The strong relationships between bacterial richness and wheat yield, as well as soil nutrients, highlighted the importance of soil biodiversity in improving soil nutrients and crop productivity. Partial substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic fertilizer significantly increased wheat yield by 27.1 % and 14.9 % under ambient temperature and by 28.0 % and 19.6 % under warming for soils with high and low fertility, respectively. Overall, this study provided the possibility to increase bacterial richness related to nutrient turnover and crop production by organic fertilizer application with reduced chemical fertilizer, especially under climate warming.

Synergistic Effects of Soil-Based Irrigation and Manure Substitution for Partial Chemical Fertilizer on Potato Productivity and Profitability in Semiarid Northern China.

Soil-based irrigation and the partial substitution of chemical fertilizers with manure are promising practices to improve water and nitrogen (N) use efficiency. We hypothesize that their combination would simultaneously benefit potato production, tuber quality and profitability. A two-year experiment was conducted in semiarid northern China to investigate the combined effects of three water treatments [rainfed (W0), soil-based irrigation (W1), conventional irrigation (W2)] and three N treatments [no N (N0), chemical N (N1), 25% manure substitution (N2)] on these indicators, and to perform a comprehensive evaluation and correlation analysis. The results showed that water and N treatments separately affected all indicators except vitamin C content. Compared to W2, W1 significantly increased water productivity by 12% and irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) by 30% due to 10% lower evapotranspiration and 21% lower water use. However, W1 and W2 negatively affected crude protein content. Conversely, this was compensated by the combination with N1 and N2. There were slight differences between N1 and N2 for all indicators on average across water treatments, while under W1, N2 significantly increased leaf area index (LAI) and N recovery efficiency (REN) by 18% and 29.4%, respectively, over N1. Also, comprehensive evaluations showed that W1N2 performed best, with the highest tuber yield, profit and acceptable quality. This can be explained by the increase in LAI, IWUE and REN due to the positive correlations with tuber yield and net return. Consequently, soil-based irrigation combined with 25% manure substitution had complementary effects on tuber quality and synergistic effects on potato productivity and profitability.

Effect of Partial Substitution of Chemical Fertilizers with Organic Fertilizers on N2O and NO Emissions from a Peach Orchard

Organic fertilizer substitution has been promoted as a weight loss, efficient, and diversified fertilizer substitution technology in agricultural production. However, there is a lack of comprehensive assessment of the impact of organic fertilizers on N2O and NO emissions from orchards. In this study, N2O and NO emissions from peach orchards were observed annually using static dark box-gas chromatography to compare the effects of chemical fertilizer application alone and partial replacement of chemical fertilizer treatment on NO emissions from peach orchards. The results showed that the partial replacement of chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizers reduced the total N2O and NO emissions from peach orchards by 15.0 % and 9.4 %, respectively. The N2O and NO emission factors were reduced by 21.3 % and 21.1 %. The mineral N content of the soil in the organic fertilizer treatment was lower than that in the chemical fertilizer treatment alone. The organic fertilizer treatment increased the contribution of AOA to nitrification and decreased the contribution of AOB, thus reducing N2O and NO from nitrification. In addition, the results of the dual isotope mixing model[δ18O(N2O/H2O) vs. δ15NSP] indicated that the bacterial denitrification/nitrifying bacterial denitrification (bD/nD) process served as the primary pathway for N2O emissions in peach orchards. Partial substitution with organic fertilizers enhanced soil denitrification, resulting in larger reductions in the amounts of N2O and NO. Therefore, partial substitution of organic fertilizer is a viable measure to mitigate nitrogen oxide emissions from orchards and to achieve green and low-carbon development in agriculture.

Bio-stimulants as alternatives to mineral fertilizers: influence on chia (Salvia hispanica L.) growth, yield, and fatty acid composition

One of the main components of sustainable agricultural strategies in crop production is substitution of chemical fertilizers with alternatives. This study aimed to examine the effects of partial replacement of mineral fertilizers with bio-stimulants (yeast and/or moringa leaves extract). Field experiment was conducted during two successive seasons 2018/2019 and 2019/2020. The fertilization treatments were distributed in a factorial design. Treatments included 75%, 50% or 0% NPK combined with yeast, moringa extract, or their combination in comparison with control treatment (100% NPK). The partial substitution of mineral fertilizers with yeast and/or moringa extract had significant impacts on growth, yield and quality components. Decreasing NPK level significant decreased growth and yield components of chia plants, except for 75% NPK combined with yeast and/or moringa. In contrast, decreasing NPK level significantly increased the chemical and quality components of chia. Treating with 75% NPK combined with yeast and/or moringa gave the highest micronutrients and fatty acid content. GC analysis showed definition of nine main components, and the major components were linolenic and linoleic acids. Linolenic acid increased with decreasing NPK, and the highest values obtained with bio-stimulant treatments with zero % NPK. The results of this study recommended that partial substitution of 25% of mineral fertilizers with bio-stimulants (yeast and/or moringa) is the best alternative not only for maintaining the growth and yield component, but also improving the quality of chia plants.

Optimization of nutrient management improves productivity, quality and sustainability of albino tea cultivar Baiye-1.

Proper nutrient management is crucially important to the sustainable development of tea production. Compared to normal green-leaf cultivars, albino tea cultivars produce green tea of superior quality characterized by high contents of amino acids as a result of the hydrolysis of chloroplast proteins at albinism. However, the advantage of albino tea cultivars was offset by inferior growth and yield performance because of low contents of chlorophylls and limited photosynthesis capacity. Our understanding about the nutrition characteristics of albino tea cultivars was very limited. A four-year field experiment was conducted to develop proper nutrient management for Baiye-1 to overcome its weakness of low productivity without a tradeoff in tea quality and environmental risks. The nutrient management schemes were formulated by optimizing the rate and ratio of nitrogen (N), phosphorus, potassium and magnesium together with substitution of chemical fertilizers with organic manures. The total amounts of nutrients in the optimized schemes were reduced by 25% compared to the local farmers' practice (FP). Results showed that optimized rates and ratio of nutrients together with partial substitution of chemical fertilizers with rapeseed cake manure more considerably improved albino tea yield, the contents of free amino acids, total polyphenol and catechins relative to FP. Partial substitution of chemical fertilizers with commercial livestock manure decreased tea quality, which was likely caused by a dilution effect of increasing tea yield and decreasing N status of tea plants. Full organic substitution of chemical fertilizers by rapeseed cake manure improved tea yield and quality but had relatively low agronomic efficiency and profit. The effect of optimized nutrient management schemes was associated with the improvement of nutritional status in tea plants. The present work demonstrated that the optimization of nutrient management considerably improved albino tea yield, quality and profit while decreased the application rate of fertilizers and the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions.

Partial substitution of chemical fertilizer by organic fertilizer increases yield, quality and nitrogen utilization of Dioscorea polystachya.

This field experiment aimed to investigate the effects of different ratios of organic and inorganic fertilizers with maintaining equal nitrogen application rates on the yield, quality, and nitrogen uptake efficiency of Dioscorea polystachya (yam). Six treatments were set, including a control without fertilizer (CK), sole application of chemical fertilizer (CF), sole application of organic fertilizer (OM), 25% organic fertilizer + 75% chemical fertilizer (25%OM + 75%CF), 50% organic fertilizer + 50% chemical fertilizer (50%OM + 50%CF), and 75% organic fertilizer + 25% chemical fertilizer (75%OM + 25%CF). The experiment followed a randomized complete block design with three replications. Various yield parameters, morphology, quality indicators, and nitrogen utilization were analyzed to assess the differences among treatments. The results indicated that all fertilizer treatments significantly increased the yield, morphology, quality indicators, and nitrogen utilization efficiency compared to the control. Specifically, 25%OM + 75%CF achieved the highest yield of 31.96 t hm-2, which was not significantly different from CF (30.18 t hm-2). 25%OM + 75%CF exhibited the highest values at 69.23 cm in tuber length and 75.86% in commodity rate, 3.14% and 1.57% higher than CF respectively. Tuber thickness and fresh weight of 25%OM + 75%CF showed no significant differences from CF, while OM and 50%OM+50%CF exhibited varying degrees of reduction compared to CF. Applying fertilizer significantly enhanced total sugar, starch, crude protein, total amino acid, and ash contents of D. polystachya (except ash content between CK and OM). Applying organic fertilizer increased the total sugar, starch, crude protein, total amino acid, and ash contents in varying degrees when compared with CF. The treatment with 25%OM+75%CF exhibited the highest increases of 6.31%, 3.78%, 18.40%, 29.70%, and 10%, respectively. Nitrogen content in different plant parts followed the sequence of tuber > leaves > stems > aerial stem, with the highest nitrogen accumulation observed in 25%OM + 75%CF treatment. Nitrogen harvest index did not show significant differences among treatments, fluctuating between 0.69 and 0.74. The nitrogen apparent utilization efficiency was highest in 25%OM + 75%CF (9.89%), followed by CF (9.09%), both significantly higher than OM (5.32%) and 50%OM + 50%CF (6.69%). The nitrogen agronomic efficiency varied significantly among treatments, with 25%OM + 75%CF (33.93 kg kg-1) being the highest, followed by CF (29.68 kg kg-1), 50%OM + 50%CF (21.82 kg kg-1), and OM (11.85 kg kg-1). Nitrogen partial factor productivity was highest in 25%OM + 75%CF treatment (76.37 kg kg-1), followed by CF (72.11 kg kg-1), both significantly higher than 50%OM + 50%CF (64.25 kg kg-1) and OM (54.29 kg kg-1), with OM exhibiting significantly lower values compared to other treatments. In conclusion, the combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers can effectively enhance the yield, quality, and nitrogen utilization efficiency of D. polystachya. Particularly, the treatment with 25% organic fertilizer and 75% chemical fertilizer showed the most promising results.

Substituting Partial Chemical Fertilizers with Bio-Organic Fertilizers to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Water-Saving Irrigated Rice Fields

Conventional water and fertilizer management practices have led to elevated greenhouse gas emissions from rice fields and decreased the efficiency of water and fertilizer utilization in agricultural land. The implementation of water-saving irrigation and the substitution of chemical fertilizers with organic alternatives can influence CH4 and N2O emissions in rice fields. However, it remains unclear how the simultaneous application of both methods will affect the CH4 and N2O emissions in rice fields. Therefore, two irrigation methods (F: flooded irrigation; C: controlled irrigation) and three fertilization modes (A: full chemical fertilizer; B: bio-organic fertilizer replacing 15% chemical nitrogen fertilizer; C: bio-organic fertilizer replacing 30% chemical nitrogen fertilizer) were set up through field experiments to explore the effect of greenhouse gas emission reduction in rice fields by combining controlled irrigation and bio-organic fertilizers. Substituting some chemical fertilizers with bio-organic fertilizers can lower the peak CH4 and N2O fluxes in rice fields, leading to a decrease in the cumulative CH4 and N2O emissions by 11.9~29.7% and 10.8~57.3%, respectively. The reductions led to a considerable decrease in the global warming potential (GWP) and the greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI) by 16.1~48.1% and 16.3~48.1%, respectively. Controlled irrigation significantly reduced CH4 emissions by 55.2~69.4% compared with flooded irrigation in rice fields. However, it also increased N2O emissions by 47.5~207.9%, considerably reducing their GWPs by 11.8~45.5%. Neither bio-organic fertilizer substitution nor controlled irrigation significantly affected rice yield. Replacing 15% of chemical nitrogen fertilizers with bio-organic fertilizers in controlled irrigation rice fields can minimize rice GWP and GHGI. The study’s results are of significant importance for enhancing the regulation of greenhouse gases in farmland and achieving sustainable agriculture through cleaner production.

Partial substitution of chemical fertilizer by green manure increases succeeding maize yield and annual economic benefit in low‐yield cropland in the Yellow River Delta

AbstractGreen manures (GM) combined with fertilizer reduction is an efficient measure to alleviate the environmental issues caused by the overapplication of chemical fertilizer. However, both the environmental and economic benefits remain unclear in coastal regions that are affected by both soil salinization and climate change. A field experiment was conducted in low‐yield cropland in the Yellow River Delta to explore the effects of green manure rotation combined with fertilizer reduction on the soil environment and economic sustainability. Two GM species, Vicia villosa (HV) and Orychophragmus violaceus (OV), a traditional winter wheat (Wheat), were grown in winter, with a fallow control (Fallow). In the subsequent maize season, three fertilizer rate treatments, a full rate of 600 kg ha−1 compound fertilizer (F100), 85% of the full rate (F85), and 70% of the full rate (F70), were applied in each former treatment. The results indicated that GM return markedly increased soil total N (TN) and P (TP) before the V6 stage of maize (when maize had 6 leaves). The average TN contents of HV and OV increased by 56.9% and 38.5%, respectively, compared with that of Wheat, while the values for TP were 13.6% and 16.9%. Compared with Fallow, the maize yields of HV and OV increased by 25.6% and 13.8%, respectively, while that of Wheat decreased by 9.1%. The average partial fertilizer productivities (PFPs) for HV and OV increased by 25.3% and 14.0% compared with Fallow, while Wheat decreased by 8.9%. The PFPs for F85 and F70 increased by 19.4% and 37.7%, respectively, compared with F100. Reducing the fertilizer rate to 70% in the HV–maize rotation pattern did not reduce but increased the total net profit and rate of return. Thus, HV–maize rotation combined with 30% fertilizer reduction is suggested for sustainable agriculture in this region.

Anaerobic digestates from cow dung and food waste as fertilizers: Effect on tomato growth and yield

Organic farming systems aim to reduce chemical inputs including fertilizers and ensure sustainable and eco-friendly production while recycling local renewable resources such as organic wastes. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of two anaerobic digestates on tomato yield and growth in open field conditions. Digestates consisting of cattle dung and food waste from a 15 m3 demountable digester and fixed-dome digester, respectively, were applied to tomato cultivation using tree fertilization treatments: 1) raw (PD100) and 2) diluted up to 50% (PD50) cattle dung digestate, 3) food waste digestate (DD), and an unfertilized treatment (control) for 21 weeks. The results showed that tomato plants fertilized with PD50 and DD were significantly higher (+34% and +33%, respectively) compared to the control and PD100 (p&lt;0.05), and all digestate treatments significantly (p&lt;0.05) enhanced plant elongation compared to the control. This study suggests that anaerobic digestates can be a helpful alternative in the perspective of partial substitution of chemical fertilizers for sustainable tomato production.

Variations in crop yield caused by different ratios of organic substitution are closely related to microbial ecological clusters in a fluvo-aquic soil

ContextPartial substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic fertilizer (PSCFOF) can improve soil quality and reduce the overreliance of crop yield on chemical fertilizers. However, the relationship between alterations in crop yield and soil microbial community in response to various substitution ratios is not comprehensively understood. ObjectivesThis study aimed to investigate the impact of PSCFOF on soil nutrient supply, enzyme activity, bacterial and fungal community, and crop yield. MethodsAn 11-year (2009 – 2021) field experiment was carried out in a winter wheat–summer maize double-cropping system with four fertilization regimes (no fertilizer, NF; pure chemical fertilizer, NPK; 30% organic substitution, NPKLM; and 50% organic substitution, NPKHM). Co-occurrence network analysis was applied to examine the importance of ecological clusters and keystone species in controlling microbial activities and crop yields. ResultsThere were no significant differences in soil nutrient contents and annual crop yield between the NPK and NPKLM treatments. However, the NPKHM treatment resulted in significant reductions in crop yield by 9.49%− 16.78%, despite increasing soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), available nitrogen (AN), and available phosphorus (AP) by 9.05%, 7.26%, 11.67%, and 26.62%, respectively. This contrasting effect was primarily attributed to the influence of a specific ecological cluster (module 2), rather than the entire microbial community. Long-term 50% organic substitution would suppress keystone species within module 2, such as Aggregatilinea, Luteimonas, Usitatibacter and Microvirga. These species were specifically correlated with soil carbon enzyme activities, including β-glucosidase, invertase, and dehydrogenase, and contributed significantly and positively to crop yield. ConclusionsOrganic substitution at different ratios altered soil nutrient content, enzyme activities and microbial community in different intensities and directions. Long-term 30% organic substitution could preserve soil fertility and microbial community, leading to stable crop yield; whereas 50% organic substitution could inhibit keystone species, reduce extracellular enzyme activity and ultimately lead to a decrease in crop yield. ImplicationsOur results highlight the importance of ecological clusters within soil microbial co-occurrence network in regulating crop yield, presenting a new perspective on the variations in crop yield resulting from varying ratios of organic substitution.

Substitution of Chemical Fertilizer with Organic Fertilizer Can Affect Soil Labile Organic Carbon Fractions and Garlic Yield by Mediating Soil Aggregate-Associated Organic Carbon

This study aimed to explore the impact paths on soil organic carbon and crop yield of completely or partially substituting chemical N fertilizer with organic fertilizers. A four-year field experiment was conducted and included four treatments: (i) N0, no N fertilization application; (ii) NF, only synthetic N fertilizer application; (iii) 1/2OF, organic fertilizer substituted for 100% of the synthetic N fertilizer, with the total N application amount being equivalent to half that of NF; and (iv) 1/3OF + 2/3NF, organic fertilizer substituted for 1/3 of the synthetic N fertilizer with the total N application amount from organic and synthetic fertilizer being equivalent to that of NF. Soil total organic carbon (TOC), labile organic-carbon fractions (microbial biomass carbon (MBC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), and easily oxidized organic carbon (EOC)), the carbon pool management index (CPMI), soil aggregated distribution, and water-stable aggregate-associated organic carbon were determined. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to clarify the impact paths of TOC and garlic yield changes under different N fertilizer treatments. Results showed that compared with N0 and NF, 1/2OF and 1/3OF + 2/3NF significantly increased TOC contents by 14.1–20.6%. Soil MBC, DOC, and EOC under 1/2OF were significantly higher than under N0, whereas the 1/3OF + 2/3NF treatment had significantly greater POC. The CPMI was improved by organic fertilizer treatment, with 1/2OF treatment being significantly higher than N0 and NF. The proportion of soil aggregate mass with particle sizes &gt;2 mm was significantly greater under N0, while 1/3OF + 2/3NF significantly increased the proportion of particle sizes of 0.5–2 mm. Soil water-stable aggregate-associated organic carbon showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing, with the largest particle sizes being 1–2 mm. Moreover, organic fertilizer significantly increased soil water-stable aggregate organic carbon compared with N0 and NF. Similarly, the garlic yield increased with organic fertilizer treatment, while 1/3OF + 2/3NF significantly increased the yield by 37.2% and 15.3%, respectively, compared with N0 and NF. Furthermore, SEM analysis indicated that fertilizer regimes could directly affect TOC and labile organic carbon components by affecting aggregate-associated organic carbon. In particular, aggregates with particle sizes of 0.5–2 mm played an important role, indirectly affecting garlic yield and CPMI. These results indicate that organic fertilizer application has the potential to improve soil organic-carbon content and garlic yield; moreover, fully applying organic fertilizer can reduce N fertilizer input while still maintaining an increase in soil organic carbon and crop yield in the short term. However, caution is still needed regarding of the type and quantity of organic fertilizer added in different cropping systems, and with different soil textures.

Effect of Partial Organic Fertilizer Substitution on Heavy Metal Accumulation in Wheat Grains and Associated Health Risks

The partial substitution of chemical fertilizers with organic manure is an important strategy for improving agricultural sustainability. However, its effect on heavy metal (HM) pollution and its potential risk to human health remain unclear. Therefore, a field study was conducted to evaluate the effects of partial organic fertilizer substitution (0, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%) on health risks posed by HMs, including Zn, Cu, Ni, Cd, Pb, As, and Cr. The results showed that organic fertilizer substitution significantly increased Cu, Cd, Pb, and As accumulations in the soil. The Zn, Cu, Pb, and As contents were significantly higher in grains grown under organic fertilizer substitution (40%) conditions. The HM contents in the soil and grains were below the safety threshold limits in all treatments. Furthermore, the health risk caused by the exposure to As, Cu, and Zn accounted for 86% of the hazard index (HI) value. The HI value was significantly greater at a substitution ratio of 40% than in the no-nitrogen fertilizer treatment. Ingestion of the wheat grains grown at substitution ratios ≥ 30%) increased the carcinogenic risk of As and the total carcinogenic risk. In conclusion, organic fertilizer substitution at high ratios significantly increased the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks associated with ingesting wheat grain. The optimal organic fertilizer substitution ratio (20%) maintained crop yields and improved soil fertility without increasing the non-carcinogenic or carcinogenic risks to human health. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the impacts of optimal organic fertilizer management in wheat growing systems.

The Effects of Partial Substitution of Fertilizer Using Different Organic Materials on Soil Nutrient Condition, Aggregate Stability and Enzyme Activity in a Tea Plantation.

Fertilization plays a crucial role in enhancing tea production. However, it has been demonstrated that the long-term single application of chemical fertilizer will reduce soil nutrient content and the formation of soil aggregates, which is not conducive to the sustainable development of soil and agriculture. Many studies have shown that partial substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic fertilizer can improve soil physicochemical properties and soil nutrient content. This study compared the effects of different organic materials as substitutes for chemical fertilizer. We partially replaced chemical fertilizer with rabbit manure, wine lees and rapeseed cake, amounting to 30% of the total annual nitrogen application in the field experiment, and we set nine different fertilization methods to assess and analyze the soil nutrient condition, aggregate stability and enzyme activity. The results showed that the experimental soil aggregate mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD) were significantly increased compared with control (p < 0.05); the aforementioned fertilization methods also decreased the soil aggregate fractal dimension (D), disruption rate (PAD), average weight-specific surface area (MWSSA) and soil erodibility factor (K). The application of the fertilizer containing organic materials and microbial agent increased soil organic carbon (SOC) by 20.7% to 22.6% and total nitrogen (TN) by 34.6% to 38.1%; it also significantly promoted sucrase, urease and protease activities in all aggregate sizes (p < 0.05) and increased the 2-5 mm aggregate content. The correlation coefficients between the SOC and the enzyme activities were 0.18-0.95, and most of them showed an extremely significant positive correlation (p < 0.01). In conclusion, the application of fertilizers containing organic materials and microbial agents can improve soil aggregate stability, aggregate enzyme activity and soil structural stability.
