The realistic appearance, cause analysis and diagnosis and treatment path of undergraduate students lying flat from the perspective of subculture

With the deep structural changes in society, a social lying culture characterized by reduced desires has gradually invaded the campus and eroded the spiritual world of undergraduates. Based on the subcultural perspective, it is found that there are three kinds of flatness patterns among undergraduates: those who identify with “long live flatness”, those who shout “flatness is justice” and those who practice “flatness culture”. On this basis, it is found that multiple feelings and multiple objects are important factors leading to undergraduates' lying down. Accordingly, the issue of undergraduate lying flat is addressed at three levels: macro (multi-party collaborative co-education), micro (two-way internal and external growth) and virtual (strengthening media literacy education), with a view to promoting the healthy development of mainstream culture.

Exploring Anonymous Social Communication from Subcultural Perspective: A Case Study of Online Public Toilets

The proliferation of social networks and the ascendancy of internet popular culture have heightened user concerns regarding personal privacy. This has given rise to a novel trend in social media: anonymous socialization. As a critical facet of online social interaction, anonymous socialization exhibits diversity across various subcultural domains, shaped by factors such as demographic characteristics, popular trends, and communicative attributes. The concept of online public toilets has swiftly gained traction on social platforms, particularly Weibo. Participants in this subculture adeptly employ homophonic wordplay, abbreviations in Pinyin, and cryptic language, including acronyms derived from internet jargon, thereby influencing the vibrancy of online public toilets and the evolution of anonymous socialization. Nonetheless, this trend has garnered scrutiny due to associated challenges like cyberbullying and the emergence of extremist groups. As a contemporary subcultural phenomenon, online public toilets offer a modicum of privacy protection. Simultaneously, they serve as conduits for the dissemination of negative sentiment, transforming these anonymous networks into congregations for the expression of adverse emotions.

Youth "Hanfu culture" in the context of the subcultural perspective of the development of Chinese street fashion

The development of the Hanfu Culture youth movement in China has been going on for more than ten years. The purpose of this study is to clarify the importance of the historical influence of ancient fashion on modern Hanfu costume and its perception by the youth of the country. The object of the study is social relations. An empirical survey using the example of young residents of Chengdu showed that fans of the "Hanfu culture" make up the absolute majority, and these are mainly women of a wide age range and Han youth with a higher cultural level with a good education. The author proves that the main goals of the Hanfu youth movement are: inheritance, dissemination and popularization of Hanfu culture; development and innovation of Hanfu culture. Based on the conducted surveys and tests, the author concludes that the rise of the youth "Hanfu culture" is mainly due to the following reasons: the awakening of national identity, inspired by the ongoing development of globalization; the increase in national consciousness caused by the emphasis on historical consciousness in domestic policy towards ethnic minorities. The following methods and methodology were used in the research process: Analysis of historical sources: historical documents, images, artifacts and literature; Questionnaires: among various population groups; Personal survey; Comparative analysis. The methodology included a comprehensive approach to the study of the historical context and its impact on modern fashion. The presented article explores the historical influence of ancient fashion on modern street fashion, taking into account questionnaires, personal survey and analysis of historical time periods and forms of Chinese Hanfu costume. The main conclusions of the study are to identify the significant influence of ancient fashion on modern street fashion trends, as well as to understand the importance of preserving historical heritage in modern fashion. A special contribution of the author to the research of the topic is an integrated approach to the analysis of historical data and opinions of various groups of society, which allowed us to get a more complete picture of the influence of ancient fashion on modern culture. The novelty of the research lies in the use of a combination of questionnaire methods, personal survey and analysis of historical forms to study this topic, which allowed us to obtain unique results and a deep understanding of the evolution of fashion.

Transformation of Islamic Boarding School (well-known as Pesantren) toward the modernity is undeniable choice in order to preserve it existence in the contemporary era. Thus, the decision of Kyai (as the prime leader of Pesantren) to adopt and to synchronize the curriculum of Pesantren may effect on the shift of sub-culture and the orientation of santri on the Islamic education. This research are focus on three significant issues: Firstly, Mapping of Santri’s Sub-Culture perspective on the modernity in Pesantren; Secondly, Analyzing of The Shifting of Santri’s perception on modernity, Thirdly, Elaborating The Challenges and Opportunities of Pesantren in the modernity. Explaining Physical Bullying in Chinese Middle Schools

ABSTRACT Most studies of school bullying in China are atheoretical. To fill the gap in the literature, we introduce criminological theories in an attempt to test propositions broadly derived from these perspectives in the study of physical bullying. Relying on data collected from 12 middle schools (Grades 7 to 9) in three cities with information on both physical bullying victimization and perpetration, we hypothesize that there is a relationship between victims and offenders, and that models predicting bullying perpetration would also account for bullying victimization, but the variable strengths may vary. Results are mixed. Those who reported being a victim of bullying in the past 6 months and those who were bullies were significantly correlated. However, the variables from the social bond perspective cannot account for the bullying perpetration once the variables from the subcultural perspective are introduced, while two of them are capable of explaining victimization. Two variables from the subcultural perspective seem to account for both bullying victimization and perpetration, but the strength of deviance in the model of perpetration is significantly stronger than its strength in the victimization model.

Narratives of Heroin Users in the Metro South in Cape Town, South Africa: A Subcultural Perspective

Heroin use in the Western Cape, South Africa, has grown exponentially over the last 10 years, more specifically in the Metro South of the Cape Metropole. The objective of this study was to qualitatively explore and explain the existence of a heroin subculture among people of colour in this particular district. The theoretical framework that underlies this study is subcultural theory. The study used snowball sampling with 15 participants (n = 15). In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participants and transcribed verbatim. The data were analysed via a thematic analysis. Ethics considerations were adhered to. The findings indicated that the participants constructed a subculture in the Metro South, which allowed them to sustain their heroin usage. Dealers, vendors, and police officials contributed to maintaining this subculture. Recommendations suggest that alternative interventions be properly implemented so that the subculture could be dismantled, and that heroin users receive treatment and be reintegrated into society. Furthermore, social workers need to assume more responsibility in preventing heroin usage in the Metro South and other areas.

Song Translation Analysis as a Means for Intercultural Connectivity

In an increasingly interconnected and globalised world, the need for cross cultural understanding is greater than ever before. Exploring and analysing songs from different cultures can be an effective ‘entry point’ into learning about the nature of other peoples and societies lives and for developing a sense of ethnocultural empathy. Protest songs can provide a lens for intercultural analysis, especially for understanding minority or subcultural perspectives. Translating songs into different languages makes these works more accessible to a broader cross-section of people. We present translations of protest songs, two from Indonesian to English, and one from English to Indonesian. We discuss the respective importance of meaning and poetics in making song translations. Strict adherence to song rhymes is a challenge for translators and one which may impede meaning. The optimal approach depends on the format in which the translation is likely to be presented. Fluency in the target language, rather than the source language, is more helpful for successful translation. Finally, we make some recommendations about the usefulness of intercultural song (text) translation analysis and intercultural awareness.

An Exploration of the Involuntary Celibate (Incel) Subculture Online.

Incels, a portmanteau of the term involuntary celibates, operate in online communities to discuss difficulties in attaining sexual relationships. Past reports have found that multiple elements of the incel culture are misogynistic and favorable towards violence. Further, several violent incidents have been linked to this community, which suggests that incel communities may resemble other ideologically motivated extremist groups. The current study employed an inductive qualitative analysis of over 8,000 posts made in two online incel communities to identify the norms, values, and beliefs of these groups from a subcultural perspective. Analyses found that the incel community was structured around five interrelated normative orders: the sexual market, women as naturally evil, legitimizing masculinity, male oppression, and violence. The implications of this analysis for our understanding of extremism and the role of the internet in radicalization to violence are considered in depth.

Jihadism from a Subcultural Perspective

Current trends in Western jihadism point to the renewed relevance of subcultural theory. This article outlines a novel subcultural perspective that synthesizes subcultural theory with recent accounts of intersectionality and argues that such an approach enables an understanding of jihadism as a collective and cultural response to a shared experience of marginalization and othering. In addition, this theoretical perspective offers a framework for comprehending the processes of bricolage central to subcultural collective creativity. This article illustrates this potential by analyzing examples of jihadi rap. Such analyses represent important contributions to studies of the broader cultural and social ecology of jihadi subculture.

A Comparison of Hiking Communities on the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails

Recent research has examined the long-distance hiking community on the Appalachian Trail (AT) and attempted to understand members of this leisure subculture in terms of their sociality and social practices. Using Gelder’s subcultural perspective, we continue this line of research by comparing hikers’ interactions and experiences on the AT to a second well-known long-distance hiking trail, the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Analysis of ethnographic field notes and interviews with 72 long-distance hikers suggests that while there are unique experiences associated with each trail, there is a more general long-distance hiking subculture. More specifically, the long-distance hiking subcultures on the AT and PCT are nested or geographically situated subcultures within a larger hiking subculture. This article contributes to scholarship on place attachment, place identity, and leisure subcultures by further examining the long-distance hiking community as well as the role of specific recreational settings in the formation of leisure subcultures and subcultural identities.

Organizational Culture and its Motivational Potential in Manufacturing Industry: Subculture Perspective

Abstract The manufacturing industry is still a significant economic sector and organizations try to make it attractive enough for their workforce, e.g. by motivating organizational culture. The aim of the paper is to present the results of a survey of organizational culture and its motivational potential in manufacturing organizations supporting sustainable manufacturing. Empirical exploration is based on Cartwright’s Nine Factors Methodology. The findings show that, generally, the subculture of the production workers has lower motivational potential than the subculture of non-production workers. At the same time production workers’ motivational potential decreases even more with the increasing length of service in the organization.

A Study on the Particularity of Korean Fashion Taste Community from the Subculture Perspective

Trashion treasure: A longitudinal view of the allure and re-functioning of discarded objects

As the saying goes, one person’s trash is another’s treasure. Analyses of current reuse movements focus generally on a politics of uncoupling from capitalist consumption traps and commodity fetishism. The perspective presented here considers other motivations by tracing desires for specific kinds of objects, from the past. I consider current reuse debates from a subcultural perspective, of inner-urban living in the late 1970s and 1980s. With the assistance of autoethnography, I delve into this urban subculture, known for its reliance on Do-It-Yourself. This included practices of Do-It-Yourself housing, furnishings, clothing and music, and the reliance on the reuse of preowned materials which, in turn, were often also discarded as part of this transient way of living. I therefore highlight the practice of disposable fast-fashion enabled through reuse. This included the display of ‘tasteless’ object d’art. With my personal history as a backdrop, I highlight the complexity of reuse politics that sometimes reaches beyond anti-consumerist imperatives. Specific reference is made to now highly collectable objects such as ‘Aboriginalia’ and other pieces emblazoned with caricatures of ‘noble savages’. The current collectability of these now rare objects, points to a subtle and often hidden politics of racialised nostalgia.

Jamaican cultural attitudes to entrepreneurship: a comparative exploration

This is an exploration of cultural beliefs and attitudes to entrepreneurship in Jamaica. A hybrid qualitative and quantitative methodology is employed to empirically discover the existence of diverse sub-cultural perspectives in Jamaica that cannot be predicted from coarse measures such as Hofstede's dimensions of national culture. A comparison to similar data from Canada serves to place these results in a broader research context. It is proposed that the relative strength and preponderance of these subcultures in the local environment act to bridge between Jamaican national culture and the individual cognitions and subjective norms that directly influence entrepreneurial intentions and actions. These subcultures are therefore significant to the design of policies and practices to affect national entrepreneurship rates in Jamaica.

Between rap and jihad: spectacular subcutlures, terrorism and visuality

ABSTRACTThis article underlines the importance of terrorist jihadist online communication. The visual expressions of sociocultural identity are a trademark of jihadist terrorist groups. This paper also shows that subcultural perspective constitutes a privileged point of view for the analysis of the phenomenon of Western-born jihadist terrorism. In scientific literature there is a lack of empirical research on the visual dimension of jihadist terrorism in a subcultural perspective. In this perspective, the article analyses the subcultural identity of a Western-born jihadist terrorist, the former rapper Deso Dogg, also known as Abu-Maleeq. This paper proposes an original analysis of terrorist group membership, analysing through visual sociology the YouTube videos of Deso Dogg – Abu-Maleeq. The visual jihadist representation is based on the repetition of semantic elements. This result confirms the importance of the semantic coherence of communication, namely the Hebdigian homology. Furthermore, terrorist communication assigns new meanings to traditional cultural elements. This result confirms the relevance of the subcultural practice of bricolage. In conclusion, the article allows an original perspective for the study of terrorist communication and underlines the importance of Hebdigian perspective for the understanding of what processes turned troubled Western youth into terrorists.

Regional variation in subcultural attitudes to entrepreneurship in India

This article reports on an exploration of Indian cultural attitudes towards entrepreneurship, and the degree to which these vary among different regions. It uses Q-methodology in which 139 respondents in Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai were asked to rank 42 statements about entrepreneurship beliefs and attitudes. This data was factor analysed to discover six distinct regional viewpoints which were grouped by cluster analysis into two subcultural perspectives. These subcultures differ widely from the broad measures of Indian national culture usually cited in the entrepreneurship literature. The effects of these differences on the social environment and subjective norms of individuals who are considering entrepreneurship are highlighted. The existence of distinct regional entrepreneurial cultures has important implications for entrepreneurship theorists and national policy-makers.

Feeling Happy and Sad at the Same Time? Subcultural Differences in Experiencing Mixed Emotions between Han Chinese and Mongolian Chinese.

Sometimes people experience pleasant and unpleasant emotions at the same time in a single emotional event. Previous cross-cultural studies indicated that such mixed emotions are more prevalent in China and related to the attitudes toward happiness and individual’s regulatory motivation. However, China is a multi-ethnic country and not much is known about subcultural differences in mixed emotions. The aim of this study was to examine the role that implicit attitudes toward happiness and regulatory motivation played in regard of the subcultural differences in mixed emotions between Han (N = 61) and Mongolian Chinese (N = 46). Results indicated that, compared with Mongolian Chinese, Han Chinese showed stronger associations between implicit contra-hedonic attitudes toward happiness and mixed emotions during pleasant emotional events. Also, Han Chinese who reported contra-hedonic motivation during pleasant emotional events had higher levels of mixed emotions than those who had hedonic motivation. No significant differences were found in terms of mixed emotions between Mongolian Chinese who had contra-hedonic and hedonic motivation. These results suggest that the psychological mechanisms underlying differences in mixed emotions also require a more comprehensive understanding from a subcultural perspective.

Subculture, Gang Involvement, and Delinquency: A Study of Incarcerated Youth in China

The purpose of this study is to examine youth gang phenomena in China employing a two-step approach. The first step is to apply the delinquent subculture perspective to the explanation of variation in gang involvement; the second is to investigate the relationship between youth gang involvement and self-reported delinquency. The data for the study were collected from face-to-face interviews conducted with adjudicated youth offenders incarcerated in a province-run juvenile prison. Structural equation modeling is used to assess the direct and indirect effects of delinquent subculture exposure and gang involvement on three outcome variables of delinquency. The primary finding is that exposure to a subculture of violence is indeed a significant predictor of gang involvement. Importantly, gang involvement is significantly correlated with both violent offending and drug offending.

Networking vehement frames: neo-Nazi and violent jihadi demagoguery

The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of violent extremist propaganda. Frame analysis and network text analysis (NTA) are used to advance our understanding of how diagnostic frames function within violent extremist propaganda. Neo-Nazi and violent jihadi demagogues use diagnostic frames to identify grievances in order to leverage individual and collective attitudes. More specifically, diagnostic frames assist in attitude formation through manufacturing subcultural identities and social boundaries that resonate within a target population. A comparative research design is used because of the differences and similarities that exist between neo-Nazi and violent jihadi propaganda. Analysis is based on the NTA, which generates neo-Nazi and violent jihadi ego networks. Results suggest that the process of generating subcultural identities and social boundaries is not unique among ideologies or groups despite differences in language, culture, history, and geography. Importantly, ego networks illustrate how demagogues frame societal problems from a subcultural perspective in order to mobilize target audiences.

‘What is the meaning of a safety-pin?’ Critical literacies and the ethnographic turn in contemporary art

In this contribution we address the concept of critical literacies by analyzing how symbolic representations within subcultures can be understood as an engagement with specific literacy practices. For some time now, cultural studies researchers with an interest in literacy have depended upon ethnographic methods to document how members of subcultural communities mobilize literacy practices to achieve critical ends. But the extent to which ethnography actually grants researchers access to subcultural perspectives on literacy has come into question. In this article, we aim to problematize and thematize the ethnographic perspective on literacy in general – and subculture as a situated literacy practice in particular – by critically assessing contemporary art practices that focus on the representation of subcultural identities. We therefore specifically look at artwork by Nikki S. Lee, who focuses on subcultures in her work through ‘going native performances’.
