The flow of urbanization is unstoppable as the population grows, which is followed by an increase in the need for built-up land such as housing, commercial centers, public services, industry. Meanwhile, each land has different characteristics to support these human activities. In land suitability studies, the slope is an important factor and is always involved. This study aims to determine the influence of slope on the development of built-up land in Serang Regency, as one of the areas with a high population growth rate and a variety of regional morphologies. Land cover/land use change analysis was used to determine the spatial distribution of additional built-up land in the period 2019-2023 and 2023-2031. 87% of the additional built-up land in 2019-2023 is located in areas with slopes of 2-15%. Then based on the Serang Regency Regional Spatial Plan 2011-2031, as much as 84% of the additional built-up land is in areas with slopes of 2-15%. This shows that the slope aspect has had a significant influence on the development of Serang Regency, where more than 80% of the additional built-up land has been located in zones that are safe from land slide.

Geospatial insights into Alphonso mango cultivation: a comprehensive land suitability study in the coastal belt of Maharashtra, India.

Land suitability assessment is integral to the advancement of precision agriculture. This inquiry is focused on identifying optimal regions for cultivating Alphonso mango in the coastal belt of Maharashtra, spanning across Palghar, Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts. Employing a GIS-based Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology, 10 crucial parameters have been considered, encompassing climatic, physical, and chemical soil characteristics: cation exchange capacity, organic carbon, slope, rainfall, soil pH, soil texture, mean annual soil temperature, base saturation, soil drainage, and soil depth. Weights are assigned to these parameters based on expert opinions and existing literature to determine their significance in developing a soil suitability map. The study reveals distinct land suitability zones for Alphonso mango cultivation. The land suitability map designates 25.78% of the study area as highly suitable, while 9.18% is considered unsuitable for Alphonso mango cultivation. To validate the study, the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve has been employed, indicating an 83% approval rate for the reliability and performance of the soil suitability. The results categorise soil suitability classes, providing valuable insights for farmers and agricultural planners to make informed decisions regarding Alphonso mango cultivation in similar geoenvironmental regions.

Land suitability studies for paddy cultivation in Dadahup Swampy Irrigation Area

The Dadahup Swampy Irrigation Area is crucial in the government’s Food Estate initiative to enhance food security in Indonesia. Following extensive infrastructure improvements, including network rehabilitation and gate construction between 2020 and 2022, a pilot project was initiated in block A5. However, rice yields in this area still need to improve, primarily due to inadequate land management practices. This study evaluates and maps land suitability for paddy cultivation in the Dadahup Swamp Irrigation Area, employing a combination of laboratory data and field research integrated with geographic information system (GIS) technology. Various parameters were considered, such as climate factors (temperature and water availability), soil characteristics (drainage, texture, depth), peatland attributes (thickness, maturity), nutrient content (CEC, base saturation, pH, C-organic), available nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), salinity, alkalinity, pyrite depth, and inundation levels during planting. Then, thematic raster mapping was conducted using the Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) method, followed by reclassification based on Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) standards for land evaluation. The result categorized Block A5 into three suitability classes: S1 (highly suitable), S2 (moderately suitable), and S3 (marginally suitable). Approximately 22.5% of Block A5 is highly suitable (S1), 39.5% is moderately suitable (S2), and around 38% is marginally suitable (S3).

Land suitability assessment for wheat-barley cultivation in a semi-arid region of Eastern Anatolia in Turkey.

The efficient use and sustainability of agricultural lands depend heavily on the characteristics of soil resources in a given area, as different soil properties can significantly impact crop growth and yield. Therefore, land suitability studies play a crucial role in determining the appropriate crops for a given area and ensuring sustainable agricultural practices. This study, conducted in Tusba District-Van, Turkey, represents a significant advancement in land suitability studies for wheat-barley cultivation. Using geographic information systems, the analytical hierarchical process method, and the standard scoring function, lands were determined based on the examined criteria for the suitability of wheat-barley cultivation. One of this study's main findings is identifying critical factors that influence the suitability of land for wheat-barley cultivation. These factors include slope, organic matter content, available water capacity, soil depth, cation exchange capacity, pH level, and clay content. It is important to note that slope is the most influential factor, followed by organic matter content and available water capacity. A Soil Quality Index map was produced, and the suitability of wheat-barley production in the studied area was demonstrated. More than 28% of the study area was very suitable for wheat-barley production (S2), and more than was 39% moderately suitable (S3). A positive regression (R2=0.67) was found between soil quality index values and crop yield. The relationship between soil quality index values and crop yield is above acceptable limits. Land suitability assessment can minimize labor and cost losses in the planning and implementation of sustainable ecological and economic agriculture. Furthermore, land suitability classes play an active role in the selection of the product pattern of the area by presenting a spatial decision support system.

Land suitability study for the development of rice production in Moruku Village, Papua Pegunungan Province to support food security

Yahukimo Regency is one of the districts in Papua Island which has high food insecurity. The staple food of the local community is generally tubers. However, changing consumption patterns from tubers to rice is one of the challenges and problems for local governments to ensure the sustainability and safety of food ingredients. The purpose of this study was to determine the chemical and physical quality of the soil in the area of food crop cultivation development, as well as engineering recommendations for the development of rice cultivation technology based on the results of soil quality analysis in the study area. The research was conducted in Dekai District, Yahukimo Regency using a descriptive qualitative research approach using an experimental method. Analysis of the physical and chemical properties of the soil was carried out at the Bogor ICBB Laboratory. The results showed that the organic C content in the soil was included in class S1, meaning it was suitable for rice cultivation. However, the level of acidity and indications of levels of Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), and Zinc (Zn) are very high. While the results of nutrient analysis available on the parameters Total N, P2O5 and K2O are all included in class S1, meaning that the nutrients available in the soil are suitable for the development of lowland rice cultivation. For this reason, it is suggested that technological engineering be carried out, namely with a soil washing system on agricultural land, applying dolomite lime, using organic fertilizers, and selecting varieties that have a level of adaptation and tolerance to high acidity. What is novel in this study is the chemical and physical properties of the soil which can be further identified as an effort to determine the potential for new natural resources in the research area.

Integrated studies for land suitability analysis towards sustainable agricultural development in semi-arid regions of AP, India

Land suitability analysis (LSA) is the progression of influence if a certain piece of land is suitable for a specific use. Land suitability study for crops is an essential contemporary step in identifying appropriate and sustainable land use strategies to enhance the land's potential. LSA for agriculture is one of the most capable models for exposing the apprehension for arable land and forecasting the allocation for long-term growth in semi-arid regions. As a result, the goal of this research is to provide a conceptual process for LSA that will aid in increasing green cover to address environmental challenges that prevent groundwater recharge. Several thematic layers like soils, geology, slope, geomorphology, Drainage Density (DD), Landuse landcover (LULC), Soil pH, soil nitrogen, soil phosphorous, and soil potassium are derived by using collateral data, and satellite images involved in LSA analysis. The Multicriteria Decision Making (MCDM), with Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) based pairwise comparison matrix, was applied to estimate LSA for agriculture. The outcomes revealed, around 80.53 sq.km (26.55%) is highly suitable, 87.38 sq.km (28.81%) is moderately suitable, 82.34 sq.km (27.15%) is marginally suitable, and 53.07 sq.km (17.50%) is not suitable for agriculture in the study region. The decision-making AHP tool combined with GIS presents a unique technique, and the findings from this work might be valuable in identifying viable agricultural lands in diverse regions of the world.

A study of land suitability for developing corn in West Sumatra: an approach of GIS-based multi-criteria and legacy soil data

In 2020 Indonesia imported 911,194 tons of corn. Therefore, each region needs to optimize their land-use. One of the potential areas for corn development is in West Sumatra. Therefore, this research was conducted with the objectives of a) assessing land suitability for corn and b) analyzing limiting factors and alternatives for land improvements. The geodatabase analysis used an approach of GIS-based multi-criteria and legacy soil data. Land suitability was analyzed using the Matching method with classes highly suitable (S1), moderately suitable (S2), marginally suitable (S3), and not suitable (N). The results showed that 33.9% of the land in West Sumatra was suitable for corn cultivation (1,210,592.9 ha). The suitability class consisted of an S1 of 169.5 ha, an S2 class of 143,761.2 ha, and an S3 class of 1,066,662.2 ha. As much as 66% of the land was not suitable for corn cultivation due to slope factors and rooting media. The S2 and S3 classes had main subclasses S2.tc.wa.eh widely distributed in Dharmasraya and Sijunjung, S3.wa.oa in Pesisir Selatan, and S3.wa in West Pasaman. The limiting factors of subclasses S2 and S3 of corn in West Sumatra were due to high rainfall, steep slopes, and poor drainage.

Land Suitability Analysis and Tourism Suitability in Tourist Area of Pantai Panjang Bengkulu City of Indonesia

Pantai Panjang Bengkulu City is a beach directly facing the Indian Ocean, located in the western part of the island of Sumatra, has a length of 7 km, has a beautiful view and easy access to reach it, so it is designated as a leading tourist area of Bengkulu city. The purpose of this study is to analyze land suitability and tourism suitability developed in the “Pantai Panjang” tourist area. This study uses primary data and secondary data. The study of land suitability as a tourist area is carried out by delineating coastal areas by pulling 100 meters inland, calculated from the limit of the highest tide point. In this study, spatial analysis through a weighting overlay process was carried out to obtain the suitability of the tourism area land with land cover and water depth parameters. Meanwhile, the study of tourism suitability in the Pantai Panjang area of Bengkulu City uses 10 parameters of marine tourism suitability. The results showed that the coastal land that was included in the administrative area of the Ratu Agung and Ratu Samban sub-districts was suitable as a tourist area with the type of tourism being developed in the form of beach recreation, while for the coastal land in the Teluk Segara sub-district it was not suitable to be developed as a tourist area. A GIS-based land evaluation model for peach cultivation by using AHP: a case study in NW Turkey.

Crop-based land suitability studies constitute an important component of precision and sustainable agricultural practices. In this study, a model was created to determine suitable lands for peach farming with the use of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The land suitability model was carried out in Derekolu region of Bayramiç town of Çanakkale province. Within the scope of the study, a total of 12 parameters, namely soil depth, soil texture, EC, pH, organic matter content, CaCO3 content, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, elevation, aspect, and slope, were used. Present assessments revealed that of the assessed lands, 367.50ha was highly suitable, 7085.25ha moderately suitable, 6341.25ha marginally suitable, and 378.50ha not suitable for peach cultivation. Texture, slope, and CaCO3 content were respectively identified as the most effective factors in peach cultivation. The combined use of AHP and GIS techniques in the identification of suitable lands for peach farming facilitated assessments and provided significant advantages in terms of time and economic aspects. Further research is recommended to test the validity of the present model for different geographies under different climate and soil conditions.

Study of land suitability for rubber and cashew in the derived savanna zone of Edo State, Nigeria

This study attempted to assess the soil suitability in the derived savanna zone of Edo State, Nigeria for the cultivation of some tree crops. The research specifically aimed to evaluate soil suitability for cashew and rubber supported by suitability maps for both crops. In terms of land suitability evaluation, mapping units 1 and 2, with an area coverage of 27.4 ha of the entire research area (100 ha) were found to be marginally suitable (S3) for rubber cultivation but moderately suitable (S2) for cashew. Mapping unit 3, with area coverage of 38 ha was found to be currently not suitable (N1) for rubber but marginally suitable (S3) for cashew cultivation. Mapping unit 4 representing area coverage of 34.7 ha was found to be permanently not suitable (N2) for rubber cultivation but marginally suitable (S3) for cashew. Thus, technically, rubber can only be cultivated in that land at marginal level with an expected productivity of 27.4 ha (27.4 %). Cashew can be cultivated at moderate and marginal levels with an expected yield of 27.4 ha (27.4 %) and 72.6 ha (72.6 %), respectively, of the total land area. Thus, the preferred crop for the studied is cashew. It is recommended that for any significant investment in cultivation of this crop, the priority is the moderate levels with an expected productivity of 27.4 ha or 27.4 % of total land area.

Land Suitability for Potential Jatropha Plantation in Malaysia

Malaysia has embarked on several initiatives and policies towards renewable energy for improving quality. Jatropha Curcas is an oil seed-bearing plant, which potentially yields as a source of energy in the form of biodiesel. However, research on the determination of the potentially suitable area of Jatropha plant can be allocated still limited. This study aims to carry out a land suitability study on the Jatropha plantation using the geospatial technique such as Geographical Information System (GIS) and remote sensing. To achieve the aim, the objectives of this study are to i) determine significant weightage of parameters for Jatropha plantation and ii) identify the suitable location Jatropha plantation. The study area is carried out at peninsular Malaysia, and five (5) variables such as rainfall, temperature, land-use, soil and elevation data were used to achieve the analysis. The analytical hierarchy process (AHP), in the combination of Geographical Information System (GIS) methods, was applied to compute the weightage of the selected criteria, which is in geospatial data types. A map of the potential Jatropha location was generated using the criteria weightage. This study can help the cultivation of Jatropha in suitable areas and may reduce the burden on fossil fuels. It can assist smallholder-based initiatives to promote Jatropha cultivation on farmer-owned to enhance their living circumstances.

Swelling potential of volcanic residual soils in Sumatra (Indonesia) in relation to environmental issues

Abstract Swelling potential characterization of clay-silt soil is an essential issue in stabilization, settlement, consolidation, and land suitability studies. This article attempts to explain the swelling characteristics of soils around the area of West Lampung, Lampung Province, Sumatra, Indonesia, in relation to environmental issues. An investigation in relation to the soil swelling potential was carried out using 15 disturbed soil samples collectd in the study area. The methods used were analyses of clay mineral geochemistry, physical characteristics, and the free swell ratio. These results showed that the soil in the study area was Quaternary tropical volcanic residual soil. These soils were formed in a proximal volcanic hydrothermal alteration environment. The soils of the study area have characteristics of high plasticity, a reddish-brown colour, and are clayey silt grained (MH) (USCS). The soils had loose physical characteristics in dry conditions; however, these soils tends to be plastic and sticky in wet conditions. Evidence of groove erosion was found at the soil surface. Based on XRD analysis, kaolinite, halloysite, and montmorillonite were types of clay minerals found in the soil. The soil had a clay content of 11.05–78.9%, a liquid limit value > 50%, a plasticity index value of 16.7–36.9%, a shrinkage value of 14.24–36.89%, a soil activity of 0.38–2.47; and an FSR value of 0.69–0.95. These characteristics have implications for swelling soil potential. The results showed that the soils in the study area had medium to very high swelling potential. These results suggest a risk of erosion in the area, which could cause soil degradation and a change in water quality. These soils are likely to affect land productivity and aquifer replenishment and will cause negative environmental and economic impacts. Thus, soil improvement techniques are needed. It is important to maintaining vegetative cover these soils and revegetation may be required.

Delineation of Soil Texture Suitability Zones for Soybean Cultivation: A Case Study in Continental Croatia

Soil texture is a vital criterion in most cropland suitability analyses, so an accurate method for the delineation of soil texture suitability zones is necessary. In this study, an automated method was developed and evaluated for the delineation of these zones for soybean cultivation. A total of 255 soil samples were collected in the Continental biogeoregion of Croatia. Three methods for interpolation of clay, silt and sand soil content were evaluated using the split-sample method in five independent random repetitions. An automated algorithm for soil texture classification based on the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 12 classes was performed using Python script. Suitability classes for soybean cultivation per soil texture class were determined according to previous agronomic and soybean land suitability studies. Ordinary kriging produced the highest accuracy of tested interpolation methods for clay, silt and sand. Highly suitable soil texture classes for soybean cultivation, loam and clay loam, were detected in the northern part of the study area, covering 5.73% of the study area. The analysis of classification results per interpolation method indicated a necessity of the evaluation of interpolation methods as their performance depended on the normality and stationarity of input samples.

Land Suitability Analysis of Over the Horizon Surface Radar for Sea Defense using Geographic Information System

Study of Land suitability using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a way to determine the location for many fields, including in the defense field. The Sunda Strait is part of the international shipping route where there are several cases of international smuggling in this region, so that it becomes a concern for Indonesia defense. The concept of marine defense by applying Radar is something must be done at this time. Over The Horizon (OTH) Surface Radar is a type of High-Frequency (HF) radar with a detection distance that goes beyond the earth horizon. Research on OTH Surface Radar Placement is something that can be done at this time, considering Indonesia has not applied it at this time. The method used in this study is to determine the best placement by comparing the parameters of two types of OTH Surface Radar that have been used in other countries to determine the criteria of placement parameters. The analysis process will use the Analysis Hierarchy Process (AHP) by determining the importance of the parameters for OTH Surface Radar Land Suitability. The GIS process is carried out using the Overlay method which is used to determine the suitability based on a matrix of geographic parameters obtained between weight and class. The result is one suitable location to be the main area in the placement of OTH Surface radars for defense in the Sunda Strait located in the district of Pulo Merak, Serang Regency.

Integrated GIS and GPS for mapping of land suitability for Multy Purpose Tree Species (Persea americana) at community agroforestry land in Peria-ria Village

Persea americana is known as the Multy Purpose Tree Species (MPTS), which comes from the Lauraceae family. In community agroforestry land in Deli Serdang Regency. The objective of this study was to map the suitability of land for Persea americana in Peria-ria Village. This research was conducted using survey methods. Soil samples are collected from survey results in the field based on land units, then the coordinates were marked using the Global Positioning System (GPS). To create a map of land suitability class distribution, Geographic Information System (GIS) technology was used. In land suitability study, were adopted from the Soil and Agro-climate Research Centre, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia, namely: references and land suitability criteria for Agricultural Plants. The actual land suitability for Persea americana is not suitable (N) (98.55%) and marginally suitable (S3) (1.45%) and potential land suitability for Persea americana is marginally suitable (S3) (1.45%) and moderately suitable (S2) (98.55%) in Peria-ria Village, Biru-Biru Sub district. Water availability (wa), erosion hazard (er) and root zone media (rc), were limiting factors. The most difficult constrain to overcome were the root zone medium and water availability.

Land Suitability for Sustainable Aquaculture of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in Molinopampa (Peru) Based on RS, GIS, and AHP

Peruvian aquaculture, specifically trout production, has had significant growth over the past ten years. However, the establishment and expansion of small-scale aquaculture have been carried out without considering the suitability of the land. In Peru, such land suitability studies have yet to be reported. Therefore, a methodological framework is presented for inland aquaculture, which may be replicated, with the necessary complements, for the entire Fisheries and Aquaculture sector in Peru. This work modeled the suitability of land for sustainable rainbow trout aquaculture in the Molinopampa district (Peru). Fifteen key criteria (socioeconomic, environmental and physicochemical) were identified for the proper development of fish activity. These were mapped using Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was applied to build peer-to-peer comparison matrices and weight the importance of the criteria. The weighted overlay of maps (criteria) made it possible to determine that 4.26%, 23.03% and 69.73% of the territory is “very suitable”, “moderately suitable” and “marginally suitable”, respectively, for the development of aquaculture. The implementation of this methodology will contribute to more effective investment planning and efforts, both by the government and by private initiative.

Geospatial tool-chains: Planning support systems for organisational teams

In practice, most planners do not make significant use of planning support systems. Although extensive research has been conducted, the focus tends to be on supporting individual tasks, and the outcomes are often the development of new stand-alone tools that are difficult to integrate into existing workflows. The knowledge contribution in this article focuses on developing a novel spatial decision support framework focusing on the workflows and tool-chains that span across different teams with varying skill sets and objectives, within an organisation. In the proposed framework, the core decision-making process uses a set of decision parameters that are combined using a weighted decision tree. The framework is evaluated by developing and testing a workflow and GIS tool-chain for a real-world case study of land suitability and mixed-use potentiality analysis.

Urban Residential Land Suitability Analysis Combining Remote Sensing and Social Sensing Data: A Case Study in Beijing, China

With the degradation of the environment and the acceleration of urbanization, urban residential land has been undergoing rapid changes and has attracted great attention worldwide. Meanwhile, the quantitative evaluation of the suitability of urban residential land is essential for a better and more powerful understanding of urban residential land planning and improvement. Most urban land suitability studies rely solely on remote sensing data and GIS data to evaluate natural suitability, and few studies have focused on urban land suitability from a socioeconomic perspective. Consequently, this paper integrates remote sensing data (GaoFen-2 satellite image) and social sensing data (Tencent User Density data, Point-of-interest data and OpenStreetMap data) to establish an evaluation framework for analyzing the suitability of urban residential land in the Haidian District, Beijing, China, in which, ecological comfortability, locational livability and overall suitability were evaluated according to five attributes extracted from urban residential land via the factor analysis method. The evaluation results of this case study show that, compared with the suburban area in the northwest, the urban area tends to have lower ecological comfortability and higher locational livability. The overall suitability increases from southeast to northwest, consistent with the spatial distribution of ecological comfortability. This framework can potentially assist with the sustainable development of residential lands and urban land use planning.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for Gilgel Gibe-2 Hydropower Project, Ethiopia

Nowadays, political and public consciousness with regard to environmental issues combined by awareness of issues associated with climatically changes and interest in promoting sustainable development has led to growing of the international debate on the benefits derived from major water resources projects. Hence, all hydropower projects are subjected to environmental impact assessment. The Gilgel Gibe II project area is located on the South Western Ethiopian plateau. The cascade is located in the Jimma Zone Administration between the Gilgel Gibe and Omo rivers, some 250 km South-West of Addis Ababa and about 80 km North-East of Jima. The Gilgel Gibe is a tributary of the Great Gibe River, also known as Omo River downstream of the bridge of the highway Addis Ababa – Jimma. Most of the project component sites are in Yem Special Woreda of the Southern region. The powerhouse, access road, project camps and construction of other facilities are located in this Woreda. The general objective of the study is to identify the potential positive and negative environmental impacts of the proposed Gilgel gibe II hydropower project on the environment and propose possible measures for further mitigating the negative impacts. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the Gilgel Gibe II project was done based on the EIA requirement for hydropower projects as referred from different EIA guidelines and materials. Moreover, past studies such as the Gilgel gibe II dam design, EIA, watershed management, Hydraulics and hydropower, and soil and land suitability study reports have thoroughly reviewed to get basic information on the biophysical and socio- economic conditions of the study areas. The main materials used to identify possible potential environmental impacts of the dam-reservoir and hydropower project is the ICID guidelines and checklists. Mitigation measures are required based on priorities to avoid or minimized the adverse impacts that will be resulted due to the project implementation. To this end, possible management or mitigation measures have proposed against identified negative impacts of the project. Although they can be managed through proper mitigation measures, the project may also result some significant adverse impacts on the environment. Therefore, proper mitigation measures need to be considered at each stages of the project implementation including construction to operation, if not it will result distressing challenges both to the environment and sustainability of the project.
