Deixis in the Movie of Spiderman (No Way Home): Pragmatic Analysis

This study aims to identify the types and functions of deixis used in the movie Spiderman: No Way Home. This study used Spiderman: No Way Home as the object. This study used a qualitative approach. The writer used Levinson's (1983) theory to analyze the data. In the study of deixis in the movie Spiderman: No Way Home, it was found that there are five types of deixis consisting of person, place, time, discourse, and social deixis. In this study, 1,903 tokens were found from various lexemes and deixis types. Of the total, 1,478 tokens can be identified as belonging to the category of person deixis. There are 79 tokens in the category of place deixis, 60 tokens in the category of time deixis, 259 tokens in the category of discourse deixis, and 27 tokens in the category of social deixis. It can be concluded that person deixis is more dominant than other types. Based on the analysis, character P1 most frequently uses each type of deixis in the movie Spiderman: No Way Home. P1 uses 748 person deixis, 30 time deixis, 34 place deixis, 137 discourse deixis, and 20 social deixis, with a total of 969 tokens. The use of a person, place, time, discourse, and social deixis in the film Spiderman: No Way Home is properly used as their function. After analyzing the use of words and phrases related to these aspects in the context of the movie, there is nothing inappropriate. Thus, based on the analysis of the use of a person, place, time, discourse, and social deixis in the film Spiderman: No Way Home, it can be concluded that the characters' uses have been by their functions, none of which are deviant.

DEIXIS ANALYSIS IN FANTASTIC BEAST 3: PRAGMATIC APPROACH

This study reveals about the study of deixis through a pragmatic view in the film Fantastic Beasts 3, about the use of deixis by the actors through the speech used. In this case, the writer uses a descriptive method with the following steps: 1) preparation, 2) data collection, and 3) data analysis. The results showed that the most frequent type of deixis used in the film was third person (35.90%), followed by first person (23.08%) and second person (20.51%). Time deixis (5.13%) of the total instances, while place deixis and discursive deixis comprised (12.82%) and (2.56%), respectively. Besides this the result of analysis of this study indicate that the deixis research in this film is related to the moral message that will be conveyed in the story, namely the importance of loyalty, courage, honesty and the struggle against evil enemies. An analysis of the use of deixis in this film gives us a deeper understanding of the characters, their motivations and relationships with one another to the hidden moral messages in their dialogues.

Abstract – The study of deixis consists in a prolific field for the development of functional and pragmatic studies and, also, for the study of the relation between syntax and pragmatics. The observation of verbal activity allows us to understand that the value of an utterance may vary according to the context in which it is produced. Therefore, we can insert the investigations on the linguistic deixis as a process of reference of the language through which the users share contextual information within the group of studies dedicated on the interaction between interlocutors. The linguistic acts are the result of a set of textual and extratextual elements in which the linguistic choices play the main role for the success of the linguistic acts themselves. From the textual point of view, the pragmatic aspects are based on syntactic constructions delineated by the literature in this field (Martins 2012). Here we propose an analysis of the locatives La and Ca as elements denoting discursive deixis, that is, as pragmatic elements displaying a relation with the denotation of emphasis in European Portuguese (EP). The study of locatives in EP based on the data from I-Fala corpus (under construction) offers the possibility of confirming the analyses proposed in some recent works, namely Martins (2010, 2012). As argued in Martins (2010, 2012), Ca and La behave similarly when it comes to allowing users to achieve their own communicative goals, some of which being the expression of argumentation or metalinguistic negation. Thus, in view of these observations and considering the data collected from I-Fala, we will propose an analysis according to which La and Ca function as discursive markers, i.e. as emphatic-textual, interactional metalinguistic operators.

Deixis Used in Top Five Waldjinah’s Popular Keroncong Song Lyrics

This study aims to describe the types of deixis used in top five Waldjinah’s popular k eroncong song lyrics, to find out the dominant types and the reason why the type of deixis was dominantly used. The song lyrics are associated in the study of deixis since they express the singer’s or song writer’s feeling or emotion represented by some expressions of human thoughts, ideas, opinions. The descriptive method with qualitative approach was involved in this study. The data were obtained from top five popular keroncong songs lyrics performed by Waldjinah entitled Walang Kekek, Yen Ing Tawang Ana Lintang, Anoman Obong, Tanjung Perak and Rondo Kempling. Based on the findings, the person deixis was found as the most dominant type. It is in accordance with the function of person deixis that mostly deals with people interaction. The person deixis found in this study is used to maintain interaction between Waldjinah as a singer and her audience. The importance of using person deixis especially in keroncong song lyrics should be included by the song writers in order that young generations as the listeners who will preserve the keroncong song existence, become more understand even enjoy listening to.

A Study of Deixis in the Interview between Barack Obama and Chuck Todd in Meet the President

The research investigates the types of deixis, the types of reference and the reference meaning used by Barack Obama and Chuck Todd in“Meet the Press” interview. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative method. The results of the research show that from the total of 372 deixis from 84 conversation, all the five types of Levinson’s (1983) deixis can be found. Regarding the references, President Barack Obama contains both anaphora and cataphora.

Proximal and Distal Deixis in Spoken English; The Choice between This and That

Abstract The origin of "deixis" is deiktikos (deictic) in Greek, meaning "pointing or showing". Since the Greek period, the phenomenon of deixis has been of considerable interest to philosophers and in the past hundred years or so it has also become an important subject of linguistic study, especially in pragmatics. In the study of deixis the choice between proximal and distal deixis has been a major focus, and philosophers and linguists have been trying hard to identify the various factors that determine the choice between the two demonstratives this and that. However, none of these attempts has done justice to the complexity and variety of the deictic expression that occurs in natural languages. The present paper tries to ascertain the various factors that affect the choice between the proximal and distal deixis this and that in spoken English. This study reveals that, in addition to relative distance, other factors such as the referential functions of the deixis (especially the speaker's assumption of the information status of the referents), the syntactic functions of the deixis (especially as head or modifier) and the speaker's attitudinal orientation also play an important role in the choice between this and that.

Embodied reference: A study of deixis in workplace interaction

This paper contributes to a growing body of work concerned with the empirical investigation of referential practice in everyday settings. It uses audio-visual recordings of work within a telecommunications control centre to explore the ways in which colleagues establish, if only momentarily, mutual orientation towards ‘objects’, such as (features of) documents and computer screens. The paper addresses three key themes. Firstly, it highlights the ways in which visual conduct, in concert with talk, is used to accomplish demonstrative reference — an often overlooked feature of referential practice. Secondly, it examines the interactional production of demonstrative reference, noting the ongoing and dynamic co-ordination of actions in the collaborative achievement of mutual orientation. Thirdly, it reflects on the ways in which the production and intelligibility of referential actions are grounded in the activities, or common business, in, through and for which they emerge.

Interjections as deictics

The paper examines some of the semantic and pragmatic consequences of a form being both a lexeme (i.e. a simple sign) and a conventional utterance. The approach presented here has far-reaching consequences for the manner in which interjections are identified, analyzed, and subclassified. In particular it it suggested that interjections have all the features attributed to utterances, including the facts that they convey complete propositions and have an illocutionary purpose. Given that interjections are context-bound, it is possible to observe that the referential arguments in the propositions conveyed by interjections are provided by context. As lexemes, interjections have ‘real’ semantic (i.e. propositional/conceptual) content, and within the decomposition of all interjections are basic deictic elements such as ‘I U’, ‘you A’, ‘now T’, ‘here P’, and ‘this I’. These ‘primitive’ deictic elements are not tied referentially to any entities until they are placed in context. In this sense both a pragmatic and a semantic approach are required to account for interjections. Interjections are, therefore, shifters (indexicals) by virtue of being built semantically out of basic deictic elements and so should be considered a reasonable topic within the study of deixis. Definitions, using the Natural Semantic Metalanguage approach to lexical decomposition, are proposed for a varied range of interjections from English, Mparntwe Arrernte (Central Australia), American Sign Language, and Italian.

¿Cómo se adquieren y usan los términos deícticos en lengua española? Un estudio longitudinal

Within the field of language acquisition, the study of deixis is presented as a subject or relevance; a basic language resource in the development of cornmunication. Through it, the speakers establish spacio-temporal relations between themselves and objects, adopting conversational roles. Thus, is is a rich source of data, for its learning implies acquiring a certain levet of communicative, cognitive and linguistic development. In the present research our aim was to study the development of the different types of deictic terms (person, space, time, mood, and verb) in Spanish children. A one year longitudinal study was carried out from a functional perspective. The subjects were two girls, from different sociocultural backgrounds, aged two years at the beginning of the study. The use both girls made of deictic terms, recorded in their natural context, was obtained from the analysis of the girls' spontaneous talk. In addition, their adequacy to the communicative context was taken into account, together with the differences related to the background of both subjects. Also, the implkations for the development and future knowledge of the detak terms used were considered.
