Online collaborative problem-solving as a tangible outcome of digital skills in technical and vocational higher education

In today's world, specific skills are essential for success in work and life. Educators, governments, and industry leaders recognize collaborative problem-solving (CPS) and digital skills as necessary for the 21st century. However, our current understanding of these skills' interconnection and development within technical and vocational higher education remains limited. This study aims to achieve two main objectives. First, we want to examine the level of digital skills among technical and vocational higher education students in Chile and how it relates to their socioeconomic background. Second, we aim to investigate how students' different levels of digital skills influence their satisfaction with online collaboration and their assessment of group processes after completing an online CPS task. The study identified three distinct groups of students based on their digital skills: high-skilled, medium-skilled, and low-skilled. The low-skilled group faced more socioeconomic disadvantages compared to the other two groups. Moreover, students with low digital skills reported lower satisfaction with online group work and a poorer self-evaluation of the group processes involved in the collaborative online task. Insights for technical and vocational higher education institutions to foster targeted support of digital skills development for their student body are discussed.

Academic Success of Students in Vocational Education in the COVID-19 Era: Learning Style Preferences

This essay examines the various learning styles that students can choose from, depending on their preferences. In the COVID-19 era, lectures have been discontinued in classrooms all across the world, but the teaching and learning process is still possible through online platforms. There are learning types with unique characteristics that like to work alone or in groups, as well as visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic learning styles. While some students will adjust to the lecturers' teaching approach, it can be challenging for lecturers to accommodate each student's unique learning preferences. In order to accommodate various student learning styles, lecturers must create their instructional materials in this manner. This article's goals are to: 1) describe and classify the idea of learning styles; 2) emphasize the significance of determining the research participants' preferred learning styles; and 3) emphasize that if a lecturer's teaching style reflects the preferences of the student's preferred learning style, the student's learning outcomes will be enhanced. In this study, a survey, a mix of quantitative and qualitative approaches, as well as questionnaires, are used to gather data on the four preferred learning styles. As a consequence, the majority of participants favored the kinesthetic learning strategy in both solo and group work. The Influence of Leadership Spirit and Creativity on Technopreneur-Based Entrepreneurial Interest in Vocational Education

The lack of interest in technopreneur-based entrepreneurship raises concerns about stu-dents' readiness to face the demands of an ever-changing and dynamic job market. There-fore, this research aims to understand the factors that influence interest in technopreneur-based entrepreneurship, especially students in Vocational Education related to leadership and creativity. The research method used was a survey followed by data collection through questionnaires distributed to Vocational Education students, followed by multiple regression analysis using the T test and F test to test the three proposed hypotheses. The research results show that the spirit of leadership and creativity significantly influences the entrepreneurial interest of technopreneur-based Vocational Education students. These two variables together explain most of the variation in entrepreneurial interest, with 91.4% of the variation explained by the combination of the two factors. These findings highlight the importance of developing leadership qualities and stimulating student creativity to foster interest and success in technopreneur-based entrepreneurship.

The “One-Way Student Flow” in General-Vocational Education Integration in Chinese Secondary Education

The general-vocational education integration (GVEI) is an initiative of strategic significance for Chinese educational reform in the new era, aiming to integrate general and vocational education resources to provide more diverse educational options for students and cultivate high-quality technical talent. Nevertheless, the GVEI at the secondary level encounters the challenge of “one-way student flow,” a strong bias towards vocational-to-general transition in vocational education students. The issue is a severe deviation from the original objective of developing GVEI. This article focuses on delineating the phenomenon and pinpointing the causes underlying it, with a view to providing implications for the successful implementation and advancement of GVEI.

Perceptions of Vocational Education Students at Al-Balqa Applied University toward Vocational Education

This study aimed to explore the perceptions of vocational education students at Al-Balqa Applied University toward vocational education. The sample of the study comprised 768 students enrolled in the second semester of the academic year 2021/2022. To achieve the objectives of the study, the descriptive survey methodology was used.A questionnaire consisting of 32 items was designed. The questionnire items fell into four categories: Syllabi, vocational advising, educational environment, and local community viewpoint about vocational education. Results of the study revealed that students’ perceptions toward vocational educations are within a ‘medium’ level. Further, the study revealed no significant statistical differences at (∝=0.05) value in the responses of the subjects of the study attributed to the two variables of academic year and university college and there were statistically significant differences at the significance level (∝ = 0.05) in the responses of the study sample due to the gender variable and in favor of females. Considering these results, the study recommended raising the community awareness about the significance of vocational education and improving the way people perceive it.

PRINCIPLES OF COUNSELING VOCATIONAL EDUCATION STUDENTS ON YOUTH ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The relevance of the study is determined by the need to justify certain rules common to all entities responsible for organizing and conducting counselling on youth entrepreneurship in vocational (vocational and technical) education institutions, which will help to unite the efforts of the team and achieve the expected results – to create the right conditions for training self-motivated professionals ready to start and run their own business for the post-war recovery of the Ukrainian economy. The aim of the study is to substantiate the basic principles of counselling students of vocational education in youth entrepreneurship and the patterns of organization of counselling activities. Methods: theoretical analysis of scientific sources, comparison and generalization to identify and substantiate the guidelines necessary for the organization of effective counselling of vocational education students in youth entrepreneurship, to determine the patterns that arise in the process of counselling. Results: the guidelines for organizing counselling on youth entrepreneurship are characterized; the significance of the phenomena of "awareness" and "acceptance" of counselling principles as factors in ensuring the effectiveness of counselling activities is substantiated; the regularities that are revealed in the process of implementing counselling activities are determined. Conclusions: it is justified that in the process of organizing counselling on youth entrepreneurship in vocational education institutions, the primary priority is the awareness of organizers and consultants of the importance of adopting common norms, rules, requirements and determining mechanisms for their strict observance; the basic principles of counselling students of vocational education on youth entrepreneurship (humanism, legality, morality, fair use, systematic and consistent, practical orientation, corporate social responsibility) are highlighted; it is shown that the principles of counselling students of vocational education in youth entrepreneurship are also associated with certain regularities concerning the goals, content, technologies, forms, methods and means of counselling, as well as the system of control and evaluation of the results of counselling activities.

Approaches for sustainable professional skill development for vocational education students in Thailand

Background This article presents a research study that aims to explore sustainable approaches for developing professional skills in vocational education students in Thailand. This is the second phase of the research, which utilizes a qualitative research methodology. Methodology The key informants in this study are administrators of vocational education institutions, teachers, and students currently enrolled in vocational education institutions in Thailand, totaling 36 participants. The research uses a purposive sampling method and snowball sampling method. Data collection methods include document analysis, in-depth structured interviews, and observation. The results of the interviews are analyzed, and the content analysis is summarized. The research process consists of 4 steps: 1) literature review, 2) data collection, 3) data analysis, and 4) verification and confirmation. Results The research findings highlight several key considerations, including: 1) factors influencing the development of professional skills among vocational education students, such as curriculum design, support and counseling, practical training in workplaces, interactive learning, problem-solving and analytical thinking skills development, practical learning, and supportive learning environments, 2) approaches for sustainable professional skill development involve employing the appropriate approaches for self-development. The steps include setting clear goals and plans, active learning and training, technology skill development, experiential learning, problem-solving skill development, participation in professional activities, self-reflection, and continuous self-improvement. Conclusion These approaches aim to enhance the competencies of vocational education students, ensuring quality and efficiency as part of lifelong learning and sustainable development.

A systematic approach at the development and assessment of functional literacy of the students of professional educational organizations: regional aspect

Functional literacy as a pedagogical category is considered in the context of its development in the system of secondary vocational education. It is known that for the successful development of the personal characteristics of students, the teacher needs a deep understanding of its essence and context. In this article, a description of the process of development and evaluation of functional literacy of students of professional educational organizations is presented, based on a systematic approach, which is considered as a methodological basis for the development and functioning of the process of developing functional literacy among students of vocational schools. The experience of professional development of vocational education teachers for the implementation of a systematic approach is also presented. The emphasis is on the development of general professional competencies, which are based on the key components of functional literacy and are related to the characteristics of the future activities of students of secondary vocational education. The content of the educational community work in the Samara region in the field of functional literacy at the secondary school level, described by the author, reflects the stages of the process, regional specifics, features of the professional development of secondary school teachers and the implementation of the principles of a systematic approach (integrity, hierarchy, planning, dynamism, adaptability and structuring) in the formation and assessment of functional literacy of students of professional educational organizations.

Mental Well-being and Self-efficacy Among Students in a Vocational & Technical College in Shaanxi Province, China

This study investigates the interconnected dynamics of mental well-being and self-efficacy among students enrolled at Shaanxi Vocational & Technical College in Shaanxi Province, China. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by students in vocational and technical education, the research adopts a qualitative approach, employing interviews with both students and teachers to gain comprehensive insights. The findings reveal that academic pressures significantly impact students' mental well-being, contributing to heightened stress and anxiety. Social support systems, particularly peer relationships, emerge as crucial in mitigating these challenges, emphasizing the importance of fostering a supportive community. Moreover, self-efficacy is closely tied to practical experiences and skills development within the vocational education system. The study highlights the pivotal role of teachers in shaping students' self-confidence through encouragement and constructive feedback. Career aspirations are identified as influential in shaping self-efficacy, with students having clear goals expressing higher levels of confidence. Based on the findings, the study proposes recommendations to strengthen support systems, promote social support networks, provide teacher training, offer comprehensive career guidance, and enhance the curriculum to incorporate more practical experiences. The recommendations aim to create an environment conducive to the holistic development of students, preparing them for academic success and future careers. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of ongoing research and evaluation to ensure continuous improvement in support systems and educational practices. Implementing these recommendations can significantly contribute to the positive mental health and self-efficacy of students at Shaanxi Vocational & Technical College, ultimately enhancing their overall educational experience and future

Creating a model of a training task set for a multitask practical training in the courses “Informatics” and “Information technologies in professional activity”

According to the federal state educational standards, the curriculum for socio-economic and humanitarian students of secondary vocational education (SVE) and higher education (HE) includes disciplines that provide mastery of competencies in the field of information and communication technologies. Along with the course of informatics, they include disciplines of the block “Information technologies in professional activity”: “Information Technologies in Court Activity” (SVE), “Information Technologies in Professional Activity” (for several specialties of SVE), “Information and Communication Technologies in Judicial Activity” (HE), “Information Technologies in Management” (HE), “Information Technologies in Translation Studies” (HE) and several other disciplines.Based on the analysis of scientific literature and an array of manuals — workshops provided to students and teachers by leading Russian electronic library systems (ELS), as well as own pedagogical work in teaching informatics and the block of academic courses “Information Technologies in Professional Activity”, the author proposes a model of training tasks set to be solved during the study of these courses. The relevance of the article subject is conditioned by the necessity to effectively use the time allocated by the curricula of socio-economic and humanitarian training areas of vocational education and higher education for the study of informatics and information technologies in professional activities. The novelty of the results presented by the author is confirmed by the absence of articles and reports on the topic in the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI) database

Teacher modelling as a way to foster Bildung in vocational education: a multi-method curriculum study

ABSTRACT This study presents an inquiry into the relevance of Bildung for students in (pre-) vocational education. While Bildung has seen a remarkable revival in international educational theory, its relevance for educational practice(s) remains under-investigated, particularly in vocational education. This paper presents the insights offered by a multi-method curriculum study, conducted as part of a larger project in which (pre)vocational teachers in the Netherlands experimented with their own role as a model of and for their students’ Bildung. Building on a thematic analysis of teacher observations, teacher interviews and student focus groups, we explore how six teachers enacted and perceived their modelling role, and how their students experienced it. While all teachers modelled elements of what they found important for their students’ Bildung, the teachers actually perceived as models of Bildung by their students were those who shared their own experiences and stories with students, and who related to them on a personal level by offering them support, trust and inspiration to pave their own paths in life. Based on our findings, we suggest implications for broadening common understandings of Bildung and modelling, as well as practical implications for teachers, teacher education and policy to foster vocational students’ Bildung.

Dynamics of the process of formation of the value foundations of the information culture of students of secondary vocational education

The article deals with the problem of the dynamics of the process of forming the value foundations of the information culture of students of secondary vocational education. The theoretical analysis of research on the formation of information culture is given, the stages of this process are presented: informing about the norms and values of information culture (formation of a holistic view and understanding of the value foundations of information culture.); presentation of samples of action in the information and educational environment (demonstration of a sample of action in the information and educational environment); activity-based mediation of information culture values (inclusion of students in value-oriented activities that allow them to gain experience in behavior and activity); stimulation of involvement and motivation of development in solving problems (support of persistent cognitive interest and development); reflexive processing of the experience gained (development of a reflexive position). Experimental activity is described. The author's complex of techniques for the diagnosis of the process under study is presented. The analysis of the results indicates the positive dynamics of the formation of the value foundations of information culture. The results of the empirical research and mathematical and statistical processing of the results confirm the effectiveness of the described work on the formation of the value foundations of the information culture of students of secondary vocational education on the basis of the stages of this process proposed by the author.

'It's Powerful'The impact of involving children and young people in developing paediatric research agendas: A qualitative interview study.

There is a growing consensus that children and young people (CYP) should be involved in matters that concern them. Progress is made in involving CYP in developing pediatric research agendas (PRAs), although the impact of their involvement remains unknown. We aimed to evaluate the impact of involving CYP in developing PRAs and assess the extent to which postpatient and public involvement (post-PPI) activities were planned. We conducted a qualitative study using in-depth interviews to identify and gain an in-depth understanding of the impact of involving CYP in developing PRAs. The transcripts were uploaded to Atlas.ti to be coded and organised. Dutch-language interviews were analysed and interpreted together with vocational education and training (VET) students. These students were aged between 14 and 18 years and were training to become nurses. Three CYP and 15 researchers decided to participate. We focused on three categories of impact: agenda-setting impact, individualimpact and academic impact. Involving CYP creates a more enriched and clarified agenda. It ensured that both CYP and researchers underwent personal or professional growth and development, it created a connection between the people involved, awareness about the importance of involving CYPand it ensured that the people involved had a positive experience. The participants were unable to indicate the academic impact of their PRAs, but they did understand the key factors for creating it. In addition, the need to measure impact was highlighted, with a particular focus on assessing individual impact. Our study outlines the diverse subthemes of impact that arise from involving CYP in developing PRAs. Despite the potential of research agendas to amplify CYP voices, only a minority of researchers strategized post-PPI activities ensuring impactful outcomes, prompting the need for thorough evaluation of various impact forms and consistent alignment with the overarching goal of transforming the research field. We involved VET students in the data analysis and interpretation phase by forming a young person advisory group. The data analysis of the interviews analysed by the VET students revealed four distinct themes: 1. Learnt new knowledge. 2. Learnt to collaborate. 3. Learnt to listen. 4. Assessment of the individual impact.

Emotional intelligence in young emerging adults: A focus on Wong and Law's scale in the digital work sphere

Despite the growing research on the usefulness and validity of the four-factor Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS), empirical evidence for its relevance to Black African young emerging adults seems non-existent. The study's objective was to assess the relevance of the original WLEIS factor structure for a sample (N = 365) of South African Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) final year students (mean age = 24.3 years; SD = 2.38). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and convergent and discriminant validity tests revealed a three-factor first-order structure with uniquely descriptive items characteristic of the sample's emotional intelligence. The findings contribute to the WLEIS measurement of emotional intelligence in young emerging adults who are preparing to enter the digital-age work world.

Research on The Management Mode of Vocational Education Students Based on The Internet

With the advent of the era of “Internet+ education,” the management mode of vocational education is facing enormous challenges, and the problems of traditional classroom management and student management are becoming more obvious. This paper analyzes the practical significance, opportunities, and challenges of the Internet in the management of vocational education, and finds that only by updating and improving the management model of vocational education can we cultivate socially applicable and practical high-tech skilled talents. Therefore, it is important to establish an information platform and practice refined management, adhering to the student-oriented concept of humanized education management. The management team can also be upgraded to improve management efficiency. We should pay attention to social practice and strengthen our internal management, develop electronic archives for tracking growth, and give full play to the potential of the network to implement democratic management. In this paper, the use of network tools to strengthen the communication between homes and schools, and the other six aspects of the “Internet+ vocational education management mode” are explored.

How Does the Quality of Education Affect the Employment Quality of Secondary Vocational School Graduates?

Secondary education is an important stage for individuals to acquire the skills needed in the labor market. In recent years, the trend of pursuing higher education after secondary vocational education has weakened the relationship between the two. As an important stage for the cultivation of skills among secondary vocational education students, the influence of secondary education on the employment quality of secondary vocational school graduates has not received sufficient attention. An analysis of a sample survey of graduates from 10 schools participating in the Winning the Future Phase II project in 2023 found that cognitive abilities, non-cognitive abilities, and skills all promote high-quality employment for secondary vocational school graduates to varying degrees. Further analysis indicates that students with excellent academic performance and personality traits such as openness, extroversion, and agreeableness are more likely to achieve high job satisfaction, while skill certificates and general skills help secondary vocational school graduates obtain jobs matching their qualifications. Future development in vocational education should focus on the influence of secondary education on secondary vocational school students to help graduates achieve high-quality employment.

How authentic are assessments in vocational education? An analysis from Chilean teachers, students, and examinations

Authentic assessment promotes professional skills, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world scenarios. Given the challenges faced by vocational education in Chile, there is a keen interest in assessment methods within both secondary schools and higher education institutions. A non-experimental quantitative design was employed. The methodological approach used was a cross-sectional survey. The study's sample included 244 students, 37 teachers, and a compilation of 905 questions sourced from written examinations. The findings reveal certain disparities in perspectives between teachers, students, and the examinations reviewed. On one hand, secondary vocational education teachers perceive the quality of assessments to exceed those of their counterparts in higher vocational education. Conversely, students in higher vocational education express a heightened sense of depth and engagement in their learning compared to their secondary vocational education peers. Upon examination of the assessments, it becomes evident that while written examinations are more prevalent in secondary vocational schools, these often involve open-ended and analytical inquiries. In contrast, higher vocational education institutions predominantly rely on closed-response questions that lean toward rote memorization. However, when these questions are open-ended, they are more oriented toward the transfer of knowledge compared to the secondary vocational education level. The level of realism is more pronounced in higher vocational education than in secondary vocational education. Both educational tiers exhibit gaps in attaining the principles of authentic assessment.

A holistic student-centred guidance framework supports Finnish vocational education and training students in building competence identity

This study deals with competence-based and student-centered Finnish initial vocational education and training (IVET). The main research question is how holistic guidance supports the building of the student’s competence identity in Finnish IVET. The holistic guidance in competence- and work-based vocational education and training is formally implemented when a personal competence development plan (PCDP) is drawn up for each student and informally in various interaction situations in studies, work, and leisure time. The guidance actors supported student’s personal growth, guided learning and provided career guidance. For this study, interviews were carried out with IVET students (n=15) and IVET teachers (n=29). The analysis carried out combined data-based and abductive qualitative content analysis methods. In the analysis results, the different guidance actors were organised into the following five levels of guidance: 1) IVET teachers, tutors, and workplace instructors, 2) IVET study counsellors and special needs teachers, 3) student welfare personnel, 4) leisure time actors and hobby instructors, and 5) employment specialists. Based on the results, a framework was designed for holistic student-centred guidance in Finnish IVET. This framework describes how active student agency and multidisciplinary guidance work can support the building and updating of the student’s competence identity. This study revealed that guidance processes are complex and highlights that many actors are, not only guidance specialists, needed to fulfil the task.
