Nexus Between Entrepreneurship Education and Employability Skills of Tertiary Institution Students in Ilorin Metropolis

This study examines nexus between entrepreneurship education and employability skills of tertiary institution students in Ilorin metropolis. To establish this, two research questions were raised for the study. The target population for the study comprised students of Kwara state College of Education, Ilorin. One hundred and eighty students were randomly selected. A structured questionnaire was designed as the instrument for data collection. Regression analysis statistical method at 0.05 level of significance was used to test the formulated hypotheses. The study revealed that entrepreneurship curriculum contents contain information on how students can identify and shape opportunities, new business concepts and bring through entrepreneurship among students of tertiary institution in Ilorin Metropolis. This study concluded that entrepreneurship education is a good policy on employability skills acquisition among students which makes them to be self-sustenance after graduation. The study recommended among others that entrepreneurship lecturers should introduce and use innovative/modern methods in teaching students of higher institutions the art and practice of entrepreneurship. This can be achieved by ensuring that right facilities are in place and the lecturers must be qualified and equipped with adequate and updated knowledge and skills. Prevalence and factors associated with substance use among students in tertiary institutions in Buea, Cameroon

Introductionsubstance use is a major global public health problem. About 5.6% of the global population aged 15-64 years consumed a drug at least once in 2016. The use of substances by youth, especially students in tertiary schools is increasing rapidly worldwide. This rise in substance use is associated with a negative impact on student's health, as well as their professional and social life.Methodsin a cross-sectional institution-based survey we recruited 650 students by convenience sampling from 3 randomly selected tertiary institutions within the Buea municipality. Data was collected using a pre-tested self-administered World Health Organization (WHO) model core questionnaire to collect information on sociodemographic data and use of various substances. The data collected were entered into Microsoft Excel 2016 and exported to SPSS version 24. Descriptive analysis was done to examine findings, and multivariate logistic regression models were used to determine factors independently associated with substance use.Resultsof the 650 students recruited, 625 consented and completed the questionnaire, for which 67.4% were females with a mean age of 22.2 ± 2.837 years. The overall prevalence of substance use was 89.9%. The prevalence of multiple substance use was 29.9%. The most currently used substances were tobacco (26.2%), alcohol (19.7%), tramadol (2.8%) and cannabis (2.0%). The main reason for substance use was to relieve stress (relax) 91.7%. The main negative effects reported were quarrel or arguments (18%) and loss of money (16.7%). Peers (66.9%) were the prime source of substance use. On multivariate analysis, male sex was the principal predictor for substance use (95% CI): 0.801 (1.128, 4.398).Conclusionthe prevalence of substance use is high among students in tertiary institutions in Buea. Multilevel, value-based, comprehensive, and strategic long-term intervention plans are required to curb this problem.

Analysis of Entrepreneurial Intentions among Students of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria

The study analysed students’ entrepreneurial intentions based on the theory of planned behaviour. A multistage sampling procedure was deployed to select 3600 students across selected universities in Nigeria, and a well-structured questionnaire was administered to the respondents to retrieve the relevant data to achieve the objectives of the study. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics as well as a Conjoint Analysis Technique to analyse the multi-level factors influencing students’ entrepreneurial intentions. The study found that more females (27.5%) than males (13.1%) have entrepreneurial intentions. 85% of the 1372 respondents, who have entrepreneurship intentions, have no specialized skills for self-employment. A significant proportion of the respondents wanted training in Fashion/laundry (29%) and agribusiness techniques (26%). According to findings, students rated certificate prestige, social status, personal interest, and expected income, in the descending order of importance, as factors influencing their entrepreneurial intentions. On the basis of these findings, recommendations were made. Sexual Harassment Bill and The Missing Link Between Lecturers and Students: Implications for Job Security of Educators

The study aimed to establish the missing link between lecturers and students on the sexual harassment bill considered by the Senate (the apex law making body of Nigeria) and the implications for job security of lecturers(educators) in the nation. Tis was prompted by the level of moral decadence among students and the vulnerability of male lecturers who are regularly emotionally, psychologically and physically sexually harassed yet, are seen as sexual harassers as the bill is literally directed against them without considering students as accomplices. the study adopted a descriptive design; it was guided by two research questions and two null hypotheses. The population of the study comprised all lecturers and students of tertiary institutions in Delta State, Nigeria while the sample size consisted of 600 respondents (200 lecturers, 400 students) accidentally selected from four purposively selected institutions (two state universities, one federal college of education, and one state polytechnic). The instrument for data collection was a researcher’s self-developed questionnaire with a 4-point rating scale. It was validated by two experts while the reliability was established through a trial test. The split-half method of test was used and the data collected were tested for consistency with the Cronbach Alpha formular at 0.05 level of significance and a consistency value of 0.81 was achieved and the instrument was adjudged reliable. 600 copies of the instrument were administered to the respondents while 571 copies representing 95% of the total number were returned. Descriptive and inferential statistics of mean score and standard deviation were used for analysis while t-test was used for the test of the hypotheses. Findings in the study reveal among other things that, the sexual harassment bill considered by the Nigerian senate was a welcome development but negatively skewed against lecturers as lecturers could be victims of sexual harassment by default and could be wrongly targeted and used against by perceived enemies. The study recommended among other things that, considering the status of tertiary institutions in the nation and sex as a universal activity, when making laws on such activities, a representative of all the stakeholder should be incorporated from the very beginning to avoid perceived or possible oversights

Impact of Obesity on College Student Academic Performance: A Comparison Between the United States and Nigeria

Introduction Obesity is a global health concern, with the prevalence increasing worldwide. In the USA, the prevalence increased from 30.5% to 42.4% among adults from 2000-2018, while in Nigeria, 14.3% of adults were obese in 2020. The rising prevalence of obesity is associated with an increased risk of chronic medical conditions and their complications, leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Obesity is no longer solely an adult problem; it now affects children and adolescents. This study aims to compare the impact of obesity on academic performance among college students in the United States and Nigeria. Method This was a cross-sectional study that recruited randomly selected students of Western Illinois University (WIU), Macomb, IL, USA, between August 15, 2019, and December 15, 2019, and Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria, between June 2020 and July 2020. The primary aim was to compare academic performance measured by the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) between obese and propensity score-matched controls with normal body mass index (BMI) in the two colleges. In addition, in the two colleges, students were matched for age, gender, race/ethnicity, and level of schooling. Results A total of 709 and 405 students from WIU and ABUAD were included in the study. Females constituted the majority of students in both schools. The prevalence of obesity was higher among WIU students (30.30%) than ABUAD students (10.62%). The WIU study showed no significant difference in mean CGPA between the obese and matched controls (3.70 ± 0.17 versus 3.73 ± 0.17, p=0.19). Similarly, in the ABUAD study, there was no significant difference in mean CGPA between obese and matched controls (4.05± 0.61 versus 4.19± 0.62, p=0.21). Conclusion In conclusion, our study suggests that obesity does not significantly influence academic performance among college students in the United States and Nigeria. Thus, it is unlikely that obesity alone is a predictor of poor academic performance. Instead, other factors may be responsible for any observed academic performance differences between obese and non-obese students in tertiary institutions.

AN ONLINE SPACE-TIME BUDGET AND PROPENSITY FOR CYBERCRIME BY STUDENTS OF TERTIARY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN JIGAWA STATE, NIGERIA

This study investigated the time budget on internet-based social networking and tendency for deviance interaction among students of various tertiary educational institutions in Jigawa state Nigeria (N=600), living in different accommodation system. The study purports to identify the common social networking platforms, and the time budget for interactions on them by the participants. The propensity for cybercrime in the social networking interactions with the mediating effect of low self-control was also tested, using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of descriptive analysis revealed that the participants mostly visit WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and other sites. The visitation is higher among campus-based participants, followed by off-campus students, then the students that live with their families The night time is the most common moment for the participants engagement in internet-based social networking (N=239), followed by morning (N=65) then afternoon (N=64), and midnight interactions being the least (N=30). Significant number of the participants (N=202) however reported no specification for the most common time use of internet-based networking (they visit any time they wish). The inferential statistics using Pearson product moment correlation (PPMC) suggests nonexistence of association between indicators of an online interaction relating to substance abuse and property crime with measures of low self-control. However, an online sexual-related interaction (sexting) reveals weak positive association with measures of risk taking. Creating online educational development groups in social networking sites with presence of mentors’ leadership as guardians was suggested among others, to reduce the more time spent by students for illicit interactions, and instead the spaces be utilized for educational development purposes.

Digital skills required by students of business educationin tertiary institutions for employment in the smalland medium enterprises in Enugu State, Nigeria

Business transactions in today’s modern economy primarily rely on the efficient application of digital technology.To satisfy their stakeholders, employers are searching for competent people with digital capabilities. Numeroussurveys indicate that the majority of graduates struggle to effectively use the necessary technology for onlinetransactions. This study identified the digital competencies needed by business school students at tertiaryinstitutions to work in Enugu State’s small and medium businesses. In order to do this, the study addressedfive research topics and assessed four hypotheses at a significance level of 0.05. The study used a design foraction group research. A total of 61 professionals working in digital firms and preparing students for the workforcemade up the study’s population. The respondents were surveyed using a 76-item structured questionnaire toobtain feedback on a four-point rating scale. Three professionals verified the tool. The Cronbach’s alpha reliabilitymethod was used to calculate the test’s internal consistency, and the result was 0.79. Weighted mean and standarddeviation were used to evaluate the instrument and address the research objectives, and analysis of variancewas carried out in SPSS to test the null hypotheses. According to the report, business education students inpostsecondary institutions needed 76 digital skills to get a job. Based on these conclusions, it was advised thatthe business education curriculum be improved to better suit all the digital skills specified by the pertinent expertsfor the students’ efficient training.

Self-esteem, locus of control and religiosity in predicting death anxiety among students in a Nigerian tertiary institution

Background: Anxiety usually accompanies the thought of death, and certain variables have been repeatedly linked to it. However, the link has not been thoroughly investigated in Nigeria. Self-esteem, religiosity and locus of control (LOC), which have been linked to death anxiety in Western countries, were investigated among students in a higher institution in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.Methods: In this cross-sectional survey, convenience sampling was used in selecting participants from the tertiary institution. A questionnaire consisting of Templer Death Anxiety Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Revised Intrinsic/Extrinsic Religious Orientation Scale and Multi-dimensional LOC Scales was used to obtain the data on death anxiety, self-esteem, religious orientation and LOC, respectively.Results: A total of 317 students (mean age 23.8 ± 3.25 years; 131 male) participated in the study. The findings showed that only 'powerful others' LOC (P < 0.01) made a unique and statistically significant contribution to death anxiety among the students.Conclusions: While effort on intervention by health professionals can be directed at the external LOC to lessen death anxiety, other variables require further probe.

Personal Initiative, Social Networking and Entrepreneurial Inclination among Disabled Students of Tertiary Institutions in Plateau State

Entrepreneurship is vital in the areas of innovation, job creation, nations ‘economic and societal advancement. In view of that, Social networking is seen to be important in moderating the relationship between personal initiative and entrepreneurial inclination. This study focuses on investigating the moderating role of social networking on personal initiative and entrepreneurial inclination relationship of disabled students. The study followed a descriptive survey where quantitative approach was employed. Out of the total number of (210) questionnaires administered to disabled students across the five Tertiary Institutions (University of Jos, Plateau State Polytechnic, Plateau State University, College of Education Gindiri and Federal college of Education Pankshin) in Plateau State, Nigeria, two hundred and seven (207) were retrieved but only two hundred and three (203) were used for analysis after eliminating wrongly filled questionnaires by the respondents and the unit of analysis was at the individual level. Analysis of data involved the use of statistical package for Social Sciences SPSS version 23.0 and AMOS version 23. Hypotheses were tested using structural equation model. Results revealed that personal initiative (proactiveness, resilience and innovation) significantly and positively influences entrepreneurial inclination. Also, social networking does not moderate (Weakens) the relationship between personal initiative and entrepreneurial inclination of disabled students of Tertiary Institutions in Plateau State. The present study will help policy makers and government to give special attention to disabled students by encouraging innovativeness and proactiveness among them thereby boosting their entrepreneurial spirit. Also, the society should help encourage and support the disabled students through positive interaction and networking to help boost their entrepreneurial inclination. Like any other research, this study is limited in the following ways. Since only a single research methodological approach was employed, future research could undertake a mixed approach and triangulate to validate the current findings. Further, a longitudinal approach should be employed to study entrepreneurial inclination trends among disabled students over years.

Social media as sources of information on COVID-19 among students in tertiary institutions in Kenyan

The outbreak of COVID-19 in December of 2019 and its relentless spread across the globe has led to an upsurge of information on the pandemic, as scholars, health experts and other authorities rush to publish information meant to enlighten the public on this novel virus. Thanks to social media and its various platforms, most of this information is shared online. However, this rapid spread of information has also given rise to panic and trepidation brought about by generally unverified information on social media. This studysought to assess the student's level of social media use in tertiary institutions, its influence on them, and whether they consider social media a credible source of information on COVID-19. An online questionnaire was administered to a sample of 250 students. Collected data were verified and analysed using SPSS software. The study has found that social media plays a significant role in sharing information on COVID-19 among students in tertiary institutions, with WhatsApps being the most widely used platform. However, despite being greatly influential, many students do not view social media as an accurate or credible source of information on the pandemic.&#x0D; Keywords: COVID-19, Kenya, pandemic, social media, students

Sports participation and its implication on the academic performance of students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria: A literature review

The study focused on sports participation and its implication on the academic performance of students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. To ascertain the objective of the study, the study focused on Overview of sports, Sports participation, Implication of sports on academic performance of students and Benefits of Sports Performance on academic Performance of Students however, concluded that, sports participation would have no negative implication on students’ academic performance in tertiary institutions. The study also concluded that students of tertiary institution in Nigeria should not be discouraged from participating in sports with the misconception that participation in sports worsens students’ general performance and specifically performance of students of tertiary institution. What this study implies is that, coaches, lecturers and school management should not seize students from participating in sporting activities as this go a long way in assisting them in all ramifications. It was suggested that future researcher should broaden the scope of the study to at least two to three countries so as to encourage participation in sports. It was further suggested that the Study should be conducted on the effects of sports participation among secondary and primary school students in Nigeria.

ASSESSMENT OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENTS IN ADEYEMI COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, ONDO

Most students in tertiary institutions nowadays have remarkable admittance to contemporary music and use them in both expected and unexpected ways. They spend hours daily listening, singing and dancing to various genre of contemporary music. This paper set out to examine the effects of contemporary music on the academic achievement of the tertiary institution students with focus on Adeyemi College of Education in Ondo State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was employed and the targeted populations for the study comprised both students and lecturers in the institution. The instrument for data collection was a structured and well-designed questionnaire guide. Five hundred and forty (540) students were randomly selected from various departments as well as One hundred (100) lecturers, making a total number of six hundred and forty (640) respondents. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics in form of frequencies and simple percentage. The findings divulge that contemporary music is causing students to lose focus on their academic tasks, promotes a high sense of immorality through use of highly offensive language (lyrics) and dance patterns. This has resulted in penetrability of moral impiety, licentious dressing and sexual perversion among students. This study recommends that students should be encouraged to be listening to music that will convey positive character-building messages for edification and desist from music that egg on and motivate unethical acts.

The insertion of anti-corruption education into Islamic education learning based on neuroscience

&lt;span&gt;This research aimed to analyze the insertion of anti-corruption education in Islamic education. In the context of anti-corruption education, especially students in tertiary institutions, corrupt practices are manifested in the form of corrupt behavior, such as plagiarism, cheating, truancy, and hitchhiking in group assignments, even though they do not contribute. Anti-corruption education in Islamic education has so far used a dogmatic approach, not using an approach that has a transformative impact, especially neuroscience. In this case, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, with lecturers who have special competence as anti-corruption trainers, has carried out anti-corruption education in various scientific fields, including Islamic education. This phenomenological type of qualitative research involved 52 students and six lecturers in the master study program of Islamic education. The results showed that anti-corruption education was carried out through insertion into all relevant subjects, especially the neuroscience of Islamic education. The lecturer investigates students' corrupt behavior in anticipation of future corruption crimes. The investigation results show that the most corrupt behavior of students is plagiarism, taking names in group assignments, and leaving absences with friends. The insertion of anti-corruption education with a neuroscience approach is applied in building integrity awareness that corrupt behavior is contrary to how the brain works and even has the potential to destroy reason.&lt;/span&gt;

How do internal factors impact career adaptability of undergraduate Papua students?

Abstract. The data from this study show that students from the region of Papua tend to have difficulty adapting to lectures, have low graduation rates, have difficulty attending lectures, and so on, indicating a low likelihood of career adaptability. The distinctive characteristics of Papuan people result in many of them conforming to social influences, such as friendships while prioritizing friendships over academics. On the other hand, students from the region of Papua who excelled at the lecture may have an intrinsicunderlying value to their success. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the career adaptability of Papuan students as influenced by core self-evaluation (CSE) and perceived peer support (PPS) as internal factors. The respondents of this study were 176 Papuan undergraduate students enrolled in universities throughout Papua and other provinces in Indonesia. The instruments of this study, which were distributed online, included the Social Provision Scale, the Core Self-Evaluation Scale, and the Career Adaptability Scale.Data processing was carried out by using multiple regression with stepwise method. The results show that CSE and PPS significantly contribute to the career adaptability of Papuan students in tertiary institutions. These results are expected to provide insight into the significance of developing a positive core self-evaluation and perceptions of peer support to increase career adaptability. The limitation is in online data collection, which limits feedback if some items are not understood. In addition, it is not possible to determine the seriousness of the respondents when filling out the questionnaire. The average respondents already have fairly good CSE indicating fairly good educational orientation, which is different from thegeneral phenomenon observed in other Papuan students.Keywords: career adaptability; core self-evaluation; perceived peer support; Papuan undergraduate students.

COVID-19 and Students’ Mental Wellbeing: A Cross-Sectional Study across Selected Nigerian Universities

The emergence of the coronavirus pandemic has affected the global population in an unprecedented way, which has disrupted livelihoods, as well as social activities including the closure of schools. The effect of the pandemic and the associated lockdown measures amplified the mental status of tertiary institution students in Nigeria, which has not been taken into proper view. To this effect, this study was conducted to assess the extent to which the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown measures impacted the mental health of tertiary university students in Southwestern, Nigeria. A cross-sectional online survey, using the standardized Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) depression and anxiety questionnaires were used, and appropriate summary statistics were carried out. In all (122 respondents), more than a third (35.5%) of the respondents had daily uncontrolled worries, 6.7% had suicidal intent, and over a tenth (14.2%) and (13.9%) had depression and anxiety respectively. The psychological impact of the coronavirus pandemic and associated lockdown measures on Nigerian university students is quite significant. Therefore, the mental well-being of Nigerian students should be taken into awareness and prioritized.

Understanding Risky Sexual Behaviour Among Undergraduates

Background: Exploring sexual activities that may make individuals vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies is being considered following observation and increased reports of unplanned pregnancies and its attendant consequences among students in tertiary institutions. Objective: Determine the undergraduates’ awareness and attitude towards risky sexual behaviour. Methods: A descriptive Cross-sectional survey was conducted, among year one and year two Medical and Nursing undergraduate students at two tertiary institutions in Rivers State of Nigeria, using a questionnaire adapted from World Health Organisation survey instrument to obtain data on knowledge of and attitude towards risky sexual behaviours. Two hundred and eighty participants were randomly selected. Descriptive analysis was carried out using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 21.0. Results: About 92.9% of the respondents are aware that unprotected (oral, anal, vaginal) sexual intercourse is a risky sexual behaviour. Assessing respondents’ attitudes to risky sexual behaviour revealed that 9.3% agree that condom should only be used during sexual intercourse with commercial sex workers. Conclusions: Most Undergraduates are aware of sexual activities that constitute risky sexual behaviours but there is need to cascade this awareness to reflect on general sexual habits and reduce public health emergencies among undergraduates.

EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS STUDIES CURRICULUM FOR SOCIO-ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA

The study assessed the implementation of Christian Religious Studies Curriculum for socio-economic transformation among students of Tertiary Institutions in Lagos State. A descriptive survey research design was employed. The study made use of questionnaires to acquire necessary data for the research work. The population used for the study consists of students in twenty (10) selected tertiary institutions in Lagos State. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 10 tertiary institutions.Twenty (20) students were randomly selected from each of the chosen school to make a total of 200 as sample for study. Two research questions were raised for the study. The data collected was analyzed with the use of simple percentage, mean and standard deviation statistical tools. The result revealed that religion has some positive functions that can integrate individuals into the larger society in order to lead the society as well as contribute to the economic, social and politicalwelfare of the people. It was therefore recommended that a proposal for the inclusion of liberation theology in the CRS curriculum and refocusing the current one to positively address our contextual needs in advanced.

Preliminary evidence of promise of a sexual violence risk reduction intervention for female students in South African tertiary education institutions

ABSTRACT Campus sexual violence risk reduction and resistance interventions have been developed and tested among female students in the global North and proven effective. Evidence-based interventions to prevent sexual violence tested amongst female students in the global South and in South African campuses are lacking. We present preliminary evidence of promise of Ntombi Vimbela! (NV!), a sexual violence prevention intervention piloted amongst first year female students in eight purposively selected campuses in South Africa. Focus group discussions were conducted with 118 female students who participated in NV! workshops. Most students found the content of NV! relevant and reported having experienced its positive effects. They perceived that NV! empowered them with skills to assess and deal with sexual assault risky situations. NV! changed their attitudes and beliefs about gender, shifted their acceptance of rape myths and beliefs, improved communication skills, enhanced self-esteem, and confidence to defend oneself in risky sexual assault situations. Few participants were unsure whether they will be able to use the skill in real life. These findings indicate a range of short-term positive outcomes which we anticipate would reduce the risk of sexual assault among first year female students. This suggests that NV! should be subject to further evaluation.

Overcoming the Challenges of Masturbation among Students of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria through Sex Education and Educational Leadership

Masturbation is assuming an exponential increase in proportion among students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The challenges of masturbation appear to be the most important and commonest sexual threat among students today. Sex education and educational leadership remain veritable interventionist approach to dealing with the challenges of masturbation among students. Unfortunately, sex education in this part of the world is uncoordinated or worse still, neglected while educational leadership seems to be a fantasy that ends in the classroom. This study examines the challenges of masturbation prevalent in tertiary institutions among students and thus, identifies the strategies of social intervention through sex education and educational leadership.

TEST ANXIETY AS A PREDICTOR OF ACADEMIC DISHONESTY AMONG UNDERGRADUATES IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN KOGI STATE

Academic dishonesty is a critical educational concern across all educational levels in the world. The trend is pervasive among higher education students and undermines human and national developments. This study examined academic dishonesty among students in tertiary institutions in Kogi State, Nigeria, based on their subjective test anxiety. One hundred and thirty-seven undergraduates participated in the study. The students were approached between July and September 2021, and they completed self-report measures of the Cognitive Test Anxiety Scale and the Academic Dishonesty Scale. The data were analyzed using a simple linear regression model. The finding revealed that test anxiety accounted for 56.2% of the variation in academic dishonesty. Our result supports literature indicating a link between test anxiety and academic dishonesty among higher education students. We recommend that a simulation exercise is vital in preparing students for assessments.
