Internalization and Application of Pancasila Student Profile Values in the Merdeka Curriculum

One of the main references of the Merdeka curriculum discusses the main key in this learning is a pleasant learning atmosphere. Of course, in terms of natural and automatic, if the learning atmosphere is pleasant, this can affect student interest and learning outcomes Thanks to an interesting learning atmosphere and a meaningful learning process, learning becomes more qualified. Freedom in the learning process in accordance with the previous learning concept, that is, learning familiar terms is fun. The learning process is fun, not just having fun of course. But more on achieving learning goals in a more enjoyable way Learning is smoother, which naturally affects students' physical and mental performance to achieve meaningful learning. All of this must be achieved based on the great contribution of the teacher and can collaborate or work with students to realize and apply everything that has been arranged in the curriculum. The direction of the Merdeka Curriculum towards Pancasila Students is the embodiment of Indonesian students as lifelong learners who have global competence and behave in accordance with Pancasila values.

Fostering creativity and critical literacy: transforming EFL classes with engaging critical media literacy integration

PurposeThis study aims to examine the effect of critical media literacy integration in the context of English language teaching (ELT) in Indonesian high school students on improving students’ creativity and essential literacy skills.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted in an Indonesian ELT class consisting of 32 high school students. The methodology involved instructing students to analyze various media sources and articles to demonstrate their critical reading abilities before writing creative argumentative essays. Data collection instruments included students’ argumentative essays, teaching observations and students’ self-reflections on their learning experiences.FindingsThe study revealed that students were capable of creating creative and well-structured argumentative essays. However, their conclusions were often unclear and lacked sound judgments. This indicates that Indonesian EFL students require more practice in forming well-rounded judgments. Media analysis and discussion sessions were found to be significantly beneficial for enhancing critical literacy instruction.Research limitations/implicationsOne limitation of the study is its focus on a single class of 32 students, which may not be representative of all Indonesian high school students. Future studies should consider expanding the sample size and incorporating diverse educational contexts.Practical implicationsThe findings show that integrating critical media literacy (CML) into ELT not only boosts students’ creativity and critical thinking but also helps them tackle real-world challenges, like identifying misinformation in Indonesia’s digital landscape. To make this approach more practical, the study highlights the importance of teacher-led strategies, such as using guiding questions during discussions and modeling how to create media context. These methods align well with Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar policy, which encourages flexible, student-centered learning. This research provides valuable insights for educators, policymakers and curriculum designers looking to adapt media literacy to the needs of 21st-century learners across Indonesia’s diverse educational settings.Social implicationsThe study highlights the importance of critical media literacy in fostering a more critically aware and socially responsible youth. By enhancing students’ ability to analyze media and creatively develop well-structured arguments critically, critical media literacy integration can contribute to a more informed and engaged citizenry. This is particularly relevant in today’s media-saturated environment, where the ability to discern and evaluate information critically is crucial for democratic participation and social cohesion.Originality/valueThis research contributes to the limited research on the role of media literacy integration in enhancing students’ creativity and critical literacy within ELT. It highlights the importance of teacher-led discussions in fostering critical thinking skills, providing valuable insights for teachers, practitioners and policymakers aiming to improve media literacy instruction in similar contexts.

Investigating factors influencing bullying behavior reduction and gender differences in higher education: A structural equation modeling approach.

In recent years, the prevalence of bullying among university students in Indonesia has continued to increase. The consequences of bullying have detrimental effects on the victims, highlighting the importance of finding ways to reduce bullying behavior. However, few studies have explored the factors that can mitigate this behavior among students. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze which determinants significantly affect the reduction of bullying behavior, with a particular focus on gender differences. This research utilizes the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) along with theories of parent-child relationships (PCR), teacher-student relationships (TSR), and peer relationships (PR) to explain bullying behavior. The study successfully collected data from 435 students in Riau, Indonesia. The results indicate that PCR and PR are key in enhancing students' attitudes towards bullying. As students' attitudes improve, bullying behavior can significantly decrease. This study successfully developed a research model to reduce bullying behavior. The findings suggest that fostering positive peer interactions and supportive parent-child dynamics are essential. Schools can apply these insights by promoting peer support systems and conflict resolution programs to reduce bullying. This study highlights the critical role of nurturing peer relationships within educational strategies to effectively address bullying behaviors.

Mispronunciation of English Fricative Consonant Sounds by East Nusa Tenggara Students

This study aims to examine the incorrect pronunciation of specific English fricative consonants (/v/, /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/) by Indonesian students, particularly those from East Nusa Tenggara who are studying English as a foreign language. Five male university students from East Nusa Tenggara province, who were brothers of the Society of the Divine Word and had attended an English course, were selected to study pronunciation of fricative consonants. The researchers conducted ten-word list, recorded the data, and analyzed the mistakes using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). A native speaker assessed using a scoring rubric from 1-5. The pronunciation was correct if the scores were 4 and 5, while scores 1-3 were incorrect. The findings were then presented in the research. Results indicated typical substitutions of v/ with /f/, /θ/ with /t/, /ð/ with /d/, /ʃ/ with /s/, and /ʒ/ with /s. The study reveals that students in East Nusa Tenggara enhance their pronunciation and confidence by employing contextualized materials, foreign speakers, pronunciation software, audiovisual techniques, and community-based English activities.

Folklore as an Honest Character Education Media to Achieve Quality Education in Sustainable Development Goals

Objectives: The aim is to focus on implementing storytelling techniques based on local folklore to promote honesty and the value of sustainable development to elementary school students in Indonesia. Material and methods: The study is a part of the research and development steps by Borg & Gall. Handbooks for teachers and storybooks based on folklore had been developed in previous studies and declared valid and suitable for use by experts and teachers. The research approach was qualitative. The setting of the research was seven elementary schools in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data were collected using observation techniques and focused-group discussions. Data analysis techniques performed interactively include data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, according to Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. Data validity is done by triangulation of sources and techniques. Results: The research shows that honesty education through storytelling folklore was successfully implemented. Students have understood the importance of honesty and agreed to be honest verbally and in their actions. Therefore, educating students about honesty through storytelling can be widely used to instill the value of honesty in elementary school. Contribution: This research is an effort to improve character education since elementary school and is related to the agenda of SDGs, specifically on quality education. By improving the quality of education for Indonesian students in elementary school, we can understand the need to promote honesty as character education in sustainable development.

Training for Developing Reading Materials Independently at Home for the Community of Wardo Village, Biak Numfor District, Papua Province, Indonesia to Achieve SDG for Quality Education

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the interest of reading amongst the community of Wardo Village, with the aims of revealing the influence of training to create reading materials to their reading interest and their parents’ perception on the training program. Theoretical Framework: Reading is extracting meaning from printed text. Interest in reading can be improved by several ways, one of them being the family providing familiar reading materials at home. Family, as one part of environments, can influence child n’s cognitive development. Method: An ex-post facto approach with mixed method design was applied. The participants are children and parents of Wardo village. The technique and instrument for collecting data was observation and questionnaire. The research procedure was implementing four kinds of training programs for two days, followed by evaluation by parents. Result and Discussion: The result of the study suggests that training of developing interesting reading materials at home has been able to arouse children’s interest in reading, evidenced by the observation to students and the parents’ perceptions. Research Implication: The result of the study suggests that reading interest of Indonesian students can be improved regardless of the location, social and cultural context. Originality/Value: The result of the study has given data to support some theories of education such as the schemata theory and William Stern’s Convergency theory. It will also accelerate the achievement of SDG4 in 2030.

Exploring the Impact of Family Environment, Locus of Control, and Adversity Quotient in Shaping Entrepreneurial Intentions among Students

The current state of entrepreneurial motivation among students in Indonesia presents a noteworthy concern, as it appears to be relatively low, thus impacting the nation’s economic growth and employment prospects. This study seeks to explore the various factors influencing entrepreneurial intentions among college students, with a particular focus on family environment, locus of control, and adversity quotient. To conduct this research, we utilized a survey methodology, distributing questionnaires to 120 students from two esteemed Indonesian universities who have completed entrepreneurship courses and are actively involved in entrepreneurial initiatives. The findings revealed that family environment and adversity quotient exert a significant positive influence on students' entrepreneurial intentions, while locus of control did not show a substantial effect. These results emphasize the vital importance of family support and resilience in fostering entrepreneurial aspirations among university students. This research contributes meaningfully to the existing literature on entrepreneurship by illuminating the key roles of family environment and adversity quotient in shaping entrepreneurial intentions. It would be beneficial for future studies to further investigate the role of locus of control and to consider additional factors that may impact entrepreneurial intentions, thereby enriching our understanding of how to encourage entrepreneurial endeavors among students.

From Classroom to Screen: Examining Academic Achievement in Indonesian Students’ Transition to Online Learning in Pre- and Post-Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic posed an unprecedented challenge to the education system, requiring rapid adaptation to online learning. This study investigates how sustainable educational innovations facilitated this transition and supported student learning outcomes. The academic performance of 321 Indonesian university students from various fields was analyzed in online and offline learning environments. Findings revealed a notable improvement in GPA scores of 2.75 or lower in online settings compared to offline learning, while no significant differences were observed for higher GPA ranges. Students reported that online learning was more understandable, offered readily available multimodal resources, and provided additional learning time. Additionally, they felt that online learning enhanced academic success and promoted self-directed learning. This study highlights the critical role of online tools in sustaining academic continuity and addressing global educational challenges by offering adaptable educational frameworks. These insights can guide policymakers and educators in leveraging digital innovations to ensure uninterrupted learning experiences and ensuring academic continuity.

Meta-Analysis: The Effect of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) on Improving Mathematics Learning Outcomes

The PISA results indicate that the average mathematics score of Indonesian students is below the OECD average, with one in four 15-year-old students categorized as low performers in mathematics, reading, and science. Therefore, one alternative solution is to implement the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. This study aims to identify the impact of the RME approach on improving elementary school students' mathematics achievement. It addresses students' perceptions of difficulties in mathematics lessons, the tendency to merely memorize formulas, and limited understanding of mathematics learning, which lead to boredom and lack of comprehension. This research employs the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. From research articles published in SINTA 1-4 journals from 2015 to 2023, the articles discuss the Realistic Mathematics Education model's effect on mathematical problem-solving abilities. COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS TO PREDICT READING LITERACY BASED ON PISA 2022 USING GRADIENT BOOSTED DECISION TREES AND EXTREME GRADIENT BOOSTING

Reading is a fundamental skill essential for interdisciplinary understanding and serves as a crucial indicator of the educational quality of a nation. PISA provides an international evaluation of students' reading literacy across various countries, including Indonesia. Numerous studies have utilized machine learning algorithms to predict reading literacy; however, achieving high model accuracy remains a significant challenge. This study compares the performance of Gradient Boosting Decision Trees (GBDT) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), two widely recognized machine learning algorithms for predicting reading literacy, utilizing PISA 2022 data from 12.853 Indonesian students and 59 variables from the Student Questionnaire Data File. The GridSearchCV optimization method was employed to select the optimal parameters for each model to ensure the best performance on the test data. GBDT achieved R² of 0.5106, with optimal parameters (n_estimators = 150, learning_rate = 0.2, max_depth = 3, subsample = 0.9). XGBoost reached a higher R² of 0.5247, with parameters (n_estimators = 1000, learning_rate = 0.01, max_depth = 7, colsample_bytree = 0.3, min_child_weight = 20, gamma = 1, alpha = 0), indicating XGBoost's superior performance in predicting reading literacy. Further analysis revealed that the most significant variables in the GBDT model included students' access to technology at home, extracurricular creative activities, socioeconomic status, school involvement in sustainable development, and problem-solving skills. In contrast, significant variables in the XGBoost model included family support, socioeconomic status, school belongingness, family environment's effectiveness in fostering creativity, and student imagination. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers in education to understand the factors contributing to students' reading literacy and to design more targeted and effective interventions

Language Attitudes and Valorization Among Indonesianan Engineering Students

This study explores the attitudes and valorization of languages among Indonesian engineering students at Cendikia Abditama University. Employing a qualitative research design, the study gathered data from 70 students through questionnaires, supplemented by in-depth interviews with 10 participants to gain richer perspectives. A descriptive analytical approach was used to interpret the findings, revealing a predominantly positive attitude toward English, Indonesian, and heritage languages. This demonstrates a nuanced balance between cultural pride, national identity, and the global opportunities associated with these languages. The research highlights that while many students value all three languages equally, others exhibit a preference for one language over the others, depending on their immediate academic, professional, or personal aspirations. These variations reflect the dynamic interplay between cultural heritage and global competitiveness in shaping language attitudes. The findings underline the critical role of educational policies in supporting linguistic diversity and fostering inclusive learning environments. By integrating students’ linguistic backgrounds into educational curricula, institutions can enhance learning experiences and promote multilingual competence. Such approaches can help prepare students for the challenges of a globalized world while maintaining their cultural roots, thereby contributing to more comprehensive and meaningful educational practices. This study emphasizes the significance of aligning language education with students' diverse needs and aspirations.

EFL Students' Attitudes Towards Translanguaging Practice: Its Implications for Willingness to Communicate in Indonesian Vocational Classrooms

Translanguaging has been recognized to help students learn a second language, yet many lecturers still see it as a problem rather than a useful educational tool. This study looks at the impact of translanguaging approaches on the confidence of Indonesian vocational college students in using English, with a focus mainly on the students' perspectives. The research used a qualitative case study to observe a class of 30 students (13 male and 17 female) in an English for Vocational Purposes (EVP) course. Four students, two females and two males were purposefully chosen for semi-structured interviews to get deeper perspectives. Data from these observations and interviews were evaluated thematically to better understand how translanguaging improves communication, strengthens teacher-student relationships, and assists in the processing of instructional materials. The findings indicate that students hold a positive attitude toward translanguaging pedagogies, citing benefits such as improved knowledge development, enhanced vocabulary acquisition, stronger relationships with lecturers, and increased Willingness to Communicate (WTC) in English. The study emphasizes that translanguaging facilitates English language learning and acknowledges and embraces the linguistic diversity of Indonesian classrooms. This research provides important information for policymakers, educators, and researchers on how utilizing translanguaging in EFL teaching approaches can be essential in creating a more inclusive and effective learning atmosphere, especially in diverse educational settings.

Transdisciplinary STEAM learning in improving students’ conceptual understanding of heat and temperature

ABSTRACT Background Students’ difficulty in understanding heat and temperature concepts hinders their ability to solve real-world problems. The positive impact of STEAM education on students’ creativity and problem-solving skills has been reported. However, limited research exists on its influence on students’ conceptual understanding in physics. Purpose This study examines the role of transdisciplinary STEAM learning in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding of heat and temperature, emphasizing its potential to improve the quality of physics education and prepare students for the 21st century. Sample The participants of the study were 76 senior high school students in Indonesia. Design and methods We implemented a mixed-methods sequential explanatory research design to evaluate the impact of transdisciplinary STEAM learning intervention. In this study, pre- and post-tests measured changes in conceptual understanding, and one-to-one interviews further explored students’ learning experiences. From the statistical analysis of the quantitative data, the results suggest that the transdisciplinary STEAM learning enhances students’ conceptual understanding, with a significant improvement observed after completing the lessons. Based on the qualitative thematic analysis, students experience that integrated learning in transdisciplinary STEAM does not only help them to better understand the concepts of heat and temperature, but it also improves their ability to address real-world issues related to these concepts. Conclusion Through the steps of design thinking, this study demonstrated how a real-world problem-solving scenario in transdisciplinary STEAM learning improved students’ conceptual understanding of heat and temperature.

AI Utilization and Ikigai Concepts Application for Middle-Last Adolescents in Determining The Future

Artificial Intelligence (AI) currently helps humans in solving problems. Among Indonesian students, AI is still limited in its use for completing school assignments, and has not been used to develop identity and self-concept for the future. This research aims to integrate the use of AI and the Japanese cultural concept of Ikigai for middle adolescent students in making decisions in the future. Through ChatGPT, students are invited to seek knowledge about various fields of study to determine the field of study they will pursue in higher education according to their interests and aspirations. This research was carried out using questionnaires and socialization methods. Questionnaires were given to explore each student's self-concept and socialization was provided about the Japanese cultural concept of Ikigai and the use of AI to help open students' insight into fields of study that suit their interests and aspirations. Through ChatGPT, it is easier for students to find a field of study that suits their interests and aspirations and through the concept of ikigai, students can understand their identity and self-concept so they are able to determine their future. Present Time's Artificial Intelligence (AI), if used properly, will really help human problems, especially for students in the transitional age from adolescence to adulthood who must determine their future from the start with full awareness and responsibility.Keywords: Artificial Intelligence; Ikigai Concept; Middle Adolescence; Self-Concept; Self-Perception

Bridging Language Learning and Entrepreneurship: Examining Arabic Language Students’ Potential in Developing 'Arabic for Specific Purposes' Module Projects

This research explores the potential of Arabic language students in Indonesia to develop "Arabic for Specific Purposes" (ASP) modules, focusing on integrating entrepreneurial concepts into language learning. The study aims to examine the factors influencing students' engagement in entrepreneurship and how a structured curriculum can enhance both their entrepreneurial skills and Arabic proficiency. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study surveyed 136 students from Arabic Language Education programs across various Indonesian universities, gathering both quantitative data on students' attitudes toward entrepreneurship and qualitative insights into their experiences in ASP module development. The findings revealed that most students show strong interest in creating practical Arabic modules, especially for real-world applications. However, they require further training in communication skills, curriculum design, and market awareness. The study suggests that incorporating entrepreneurial competencies into the curriculum—especially in market analysis and user-centered design—would benefit students. It recommends providing structured support and training to bridge knowledge gaps and enhance students' entrepreneurial potential. Future research could explore how gender dynamics and real-world entrepreneurial simulations influence ASP module development in language education.

Learning Methods for Islamic Religious Education in the Merdeka Curriculum

Islamic Religious Education plays an essential role in shaping the character and morals of students in Indonesia, especially in the context of the Merdeka Curriculum. The primary purpose of Islamic Religious Education is to guide students to understand and practice Islamic teachings as a guide to life. With a more interactive and flexible learning approach, the Merdeka Curriculum allows educators to develop methods relevant to the diversity of student's potential and needs. This research examines various effective learning methods in Islamic Religious Education, such as discussion, project-based learning, contextual, storytelling, and demonstration. Hopefully, these methods can increase students' motivation and understanding of Islamic teachings and create an engaging and applicable learning atmosphere. In addition, professional training for teachers is needed to ensure effective curriculum implementation. Thus, this research aims to explore best practices in Islamic Religious Education and provide valuable recommendations to improve the quality of learning so that students become knowledgeable and have good character and morals as the nation's next generation.

The effectiveness of green technology-based STEAM projects to improve scientific literacy

Indonesian students' scientific literacy is classified as low in terms of international and regional research results. This research aims to increase students' scientific literacy through learning green technology-based STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics)-projects. This research is a quasi-experimental study using a nonequivalent pretest-posttest control-group design. The research sample consisted of 288 junior high school students in Yogyakarta. The details of sample involved in this study were 144 students from the experimental class and 144 students from the control class. The sampling technique is cluster random sampling because the population is divided into regions or clusters. The instrument is in the form of scientific literacy test questions. The test items were analyzed using the gain score test and the Independent Sample T-Test with SPSS 22. The results showed that green technology-based STEAM projects can increase scientific literacy in the high category. The increase in students' scientific literacy in the experimental class was higher than in the control class. The results of the study also showed that there were differences in scientific literacy between the experimental class and the control class. Green technology-based STEAM projects can be an alternative for teachers to develop student's scientific literacy.
