The prevalence and risk factors of depression in engineering college students: A cross-sectional study.

Engineering students like any other students face several stressors in their lives, which make them vulnerable to depression. Depression may affect students' academic performance. The present study aims to estimate the prevalence and associated risk factors of depression among engineering students. A cross-sectional study was conducted in December 2016 among 110 randomly selected students from an engineering college in a rural area of Pune district, India. PHQ-9 questionnaire was used. Univariate and multivariable ordinal logistic regression was used to quantify association. Of a total of 110 students, 71.8% were males, while 28.2% were females. The mean age was 20.7 years. 29.1% had no depression, 48.2% had mild depression, and 22.7% had moderate depression. Univariate analysis found four variables significantly associated with a greater risk of depression: parental stress, sibling stress, economic stress, and interpersonal conflict. In the adjusted (multivariable) ordinal logistic regression analysis controlling for all independent variables, only lack of economic support and interpersonal conflicts retained their statistical significance. The prevalence of depression in engineering students is high and strongly associated with the presence of economic and personal stress. Screening for depression and giving them care and support is of paramount importance.

The drive of this paper is to explore the obstacles faced in new innovative product development design by Zimbabwean university learners in a bid to attain the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 “Responsible production and consumption” and the education 5.0 pillar “Innovation”. However, there is little progress toward the attainment of these related goals by students in the Zimbabwean university landscape and is fuelled by a lack of guidance and assistance from various stakeholders in the accomplishment of this objective. The study mainly concentrated on the encounters faced by university learners’ prior development of products that solve better the existing and emerging societal problems and at the same time fulfilling the UN sustainable development goal (SDG 12) “Responsible consumption and production” and Education 5.0 pillar “Innovation”. Open-ended questionnaire was used in this study to solicit in-depth data on the challenges university students encounter in new product development. Findings from the study indicated that Zimbabwean university learners are constrained by multiple challenges emanating from lack of monetary support from the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology (MHTEIST) and at the micro level either institutional level or agential conditions surrounding learning in the various universities of the country. These challenges include a shortage of resources, poor infrastructure, high student-lecturer ratios, lack of in-service training and staff development programs for lectures, and ineffective curriculum implementation among others

Climate consciousness and behaviour of students of a civil engineering university: problems of education

The article addresses climate change and environmental degradation in many parts of the planet. Cities demonstrate an increase in air temperature; urban heat islets affect human health and rise mortality rates. This requires a change in an approach to urban planning and design, a modified of urban structure, which in turn require better environmental and climate education for students who are future civil engineers, urban planners and architects. The article discusses the results of a sociological survey conducted among students of National Research Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (NRU MGSU), which demonstrates their climate consciousness, understanding climate change triggers, as well as the willingness to combat the negative effects of climate change. The primary data, obtained in the course of the survey, were compared with the data other surveys, launched by the All-Russian Public opinion Research Centre (VCIOM), research holding ROMIR, and Eurobarometer. The conclusion was that some students of MGSU were poorly informed of the extent of climate change. In general, they judge correctly about their causes and consequences, take some actions to prevent and mitigate the scale of disasters, but that's not enough. It is necessary to improve environmental and climate education and practical training of students through improvement of educational programmes.

A Phenomenological Inquiry of College Engineering Students with Low-Income and Economic Marginalization: Implications for High School Counselors

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological qualitative study was to describe the precollege interactions of undergraduate engineering students with low-income and economic marginalization (LIEM). Our analysis yielded three major themes regarding precollege interactions: (a) family and kinship as a source of motivation, (b) educators as encouragers, and (c) building bridges with professionals. We discuss the importance of these findings within the community cultural wealth framework, highlighting important considerations and implications for school counselors.

Detection and classification of anxiety in university students through the application of machine learning

Mental Health has recently transformed into a domain that caused interest in almost every field and has garnered attention in recent years, millions of people suffer due to mental illnesses that are often left unaccounted for, a vast majority of these people are youngsters, a large chunk being students belonging to various universities. This research's aim was to pinpoint the extent of anxiety, in conjunction, its effects, as noticed in Indian university students. The dataset was gathered using a questionnaire, that was matching with Likert scale measurement criteria, which consisted of university engineering students. This questionnaire was distributed amongst 127 engineering students, as a result, the level of anxiety was quantified, and its causes and effects were identified, a series of statistical reliability and validity tests were performed on the dataset. Machine learning algorithms are applied in the end to classify the anxiety level based on the effects of anxiety after being trained on pre-existing data points. It was found that the Cronbach's alpha value for the entire dataset was 0.723 and Pearson's correlation coefficient was 0.823, the accuracy for the naïve bayes, decision tree, random forest and support vector machine algorithms were 71.05%, 71.05%, 78.9% and 75.5% respectively.

Research on the Reform of Civic Science Course Based on the "Interclassroom Behavior" of Engineering Students

In this paper, 1500 engineering college students in Jiangsu Province, China, were studied by observation, questionnaire, and categorization methods to investigate the "Inter-classroom behavior" of engineering college students. Nine types of behaviors were found: playing mobile games, watching short videos, shopping on Jindo, reading BILIBILI website, studying math or English, chatting, opening "Learning Power" app to study, drowsing and sleeping, going to the bathroom or going for a walk. The author believes that the nine types of " Inter-classroom behaviors" of engineering students reflect their needs. Integrating these student needs into the reform of the Civics course will stimulate the learning enthusiasm of engineering college students and thus enhance their Civics awareness, Civics ability and Civics self-awareness. Therefore, this paper builds a curriculum based on "physical and mental health-video productionmethodology education-examination subjects-study and study" based on the "Inter-classroom behavior" of engineering students. Therefore, this paper builds a reform system of Civic Science curriculum for engineering students based on "physical and mental health, video production, methodological education, study subjects, study and research, and sports and labor education". The sample size of this paper is still relatively small and has certain research limitations. In the future, we will expand the research base, fully explore different spatial and temporal characteristics, more comprehensively and precisely extract the needs of engineering college students, so as to study the curriculum reform based on their needs.

Digital device-related eye health awareness among the engineering fraternity

ABSTRACT Purpose: The spectrum of symptoms that arise from prolonged hours of computer work has been the focus of interest since computers became the center of the modern workplace. This study focuses on engineers and aims at identifying the departments that are most susceptible to the effects of computer vision syndrome (CVS), their awareness about the entity, and identify lacunae in the existing eye health education provided to them. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted through an open online survey that was circulated among engineering college students belonging to colleges in Southern India and working professionals in the Information Technology (IT) and non-IT sector from the Southern States of India. Responses were collected over a period of 5 weeks spanning over 2 months and analyzed using the SPSS software version 25. Results: A total of 449 usable responses were received. The professionals in the non-IT sector logged a daily average work-related computer usage of 3.9 ± 3.1 h/day, while the IT sector professionals logged 4.3 ± 3.2 h/day of work-related computer usage. Among the participants, 57% of the study population were unaware of an entity called CVS, and 74.6% believed that blue light filters prevented damage caused by prolonged screen time. The data showed that 18% of the study population have never undergone an ophthalmic evaluation. Conclusion: It is evident that no health education is available to engineers at any stage of their professional career that helps them deal with ocular effects of prolonged screen time. We would like to recommend an ophthalmic screening and eye-heath awareness program to be conducted at the time of recruitment, with refresher courses at timely intervals.

Performance Assessment of the First Year Engineering Students using Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation (FMCE)

The admission of non-STEM graduates to engineering programs creates an opportunity to determine if the Senior High School strand does really dictate the performance of students. This study administered the Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation (FMCE) to the first-year engineering students to determine if STEM graduates perform better than non-STEM graduates. The FMCE was administered to six hundred-seven (n = 607) first year engineering students of a state-run university in the Philippines, school year 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. The results reveal that there is no significant difference between the mean scores obtained by the STEM and non-STEM graduates (p = 0.912) in the FMCE. It was noted that the students who graduated from private and public high schools have similar performance (p = 0.242). Nevertheless, there is an urban-rural gap in performance among the respondents, where students who graduated from schools in cities have better performance than those who graduated from rural schools (p = 0.019). Finally, in the field dominated by male, the results suggest that female students are at par with male student students (p = 0.123) and both have statistically the same level of confidence with their answers (p = 0.176).

Listening to First Generation College Students in Engineering: Implications for Libraries & Information Literacy

First-generation college students (FGCS) in engineering bring a wealth of knowledge to their academic and social experiences in higher education, in contrast to deficit-based narratives that students are underprepared. By listening to FGCS’ own experiences navigating higher education and using information literacy in their project-based work, librarians and educators can better understand students’ funds of knowledge, social capital, and identities, as well as the institutional barriers that must be removed. This paper shares interview findings with (n = 11) FGCS and suggests implications for professional practice that are relevant to information literacy for design, project-based, or practitioner focused disciplines.

Research on the Influence of Virtual Reality on the Learning Effect of Technical Skills of Science and Engineering College Students: Meta-Analysis Based on 32 Empirical Studies

Virtual reality technology (VR) has been widely used in education and teaching, but the results of a large number of experimental studies on the impact of VR on students’ technical skill learning are not consistent. In this study, a meta-analysis method was used to conduct in-depth quantitative analysis of 32 experimental or quasi-experimental research literatures based on virtual reality in the past 20 years. The results showed that: (1) virtual reality technology has a moderately positive effect on the learning of technical skills of science and engineering college students ( SMD = 0.363 ); (2) the effect of VR on cognitive strategies ( SMD = 0.487 ) was significantly greater than that of mental skills ( SMD = 0.275 ) for technical skills under different measurement dimensions. (3) Different test periods, previous experience levels, and auxiliary methods have different degrees of positive influence on improving students’ technical skills, among which the 40-60 minutes experiment period ( SMD = 0.484 ) has the greatest influence on the improvement of technical skills. According to the research conclusions, we suggest to make an overall planning for the construction of VR enabling teaching application scenarios and create a human-machine collaborative interactive teaching model of “theory+VR simulation+feedback” based on flow theory.

Home experiments teaching for international students during pandemic

This paper introduces the home teaching of physics experiment course for international students in East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) in the spring semester of 2022. After discussing the criteria for selecting the home experiments assigned to the students the chosen experiments are presented. Then we described the ways of home experiment teaching and investigated the students’ experimental performance and attitude through the questionnaire survey. The findings and the conclusions were drawn both form the reports submitted by students and from a questionnaire that students answered online after the completion of all experiments. We believe that home experimental teaching is a good educational proposal for the distance teaching challenge of physical experiment courses. At the same time, the home experiments also can enrich the contents of physical experiments demonstration in the classroom or laboratory.

Disparities in mentoring and mental health problems of U.S. college students in science and engineering during the COVID-19 pandemic

This study examines the relationships between mentoring support and mental health problems (i.e. depression and anxiety) among college students in science and engineering in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. Descriptive results from a nationwide survey of 2352 undergraduates (from 43 institutions in 25 states), indicate that students who identified as women, underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities, of lower socioeconomic status (SES), and persons with disabilities reported higher levels of mental health problems at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic (early summer 2020). Structural equation modelling results indicate that student perceptions of instrumental and psychosocial mentoring support were positively associated with mentoring satisfaction (MS), which in turn was negatively associated with their mental health problems. Moderation analysis findings show that the relationship between MS and mental health problems is stronger for low-SES and non-disabled students. Implications for research and efforts to address the mental health problems of college students are discussed.

A Comparative Analysis of Mathematics Achievement in Content Areas of Pre-calculus Before and After Covid-19 －A case study for first-year engineering students at a local university

This study examined the changes in mathematics achievement in certain content areas of freshmen before and after Covid-19. For this purpose, in 2019 and 2021, the diagnosis assessment and the mid-term and final exam scores for the first semester of the local engineering college students were converted into 100 points and compared in various aspects. As a result, first, the scores seem to confirm a decline in mathematics achievement in 2021 when compared to the scores achieved before the Covid-19 pandemic. Second, in the case of the upper group, online classes were more effective concerning the study of transcendental function, function and limit, derivatives, and the application of derivatives. Third, in the lower level group, the face-to-face classes were more effective regarding the study of function, transcendental function, function and limit, and integrals. Fourth, the results of the comparison of contents between the upper and lower level groups in 2019 showed that the lower level group’s achievement was higher than the upper level group’s in all areas, but that there was no statistically significant difference. Finally, the results of the comparison between the upper and lower level groups in 2021 showed that the upper level group’s achievement was higher than the lower level group’s in all areas, but that there was a statistically significant difference only when it came to the learning of integrals., in addition to the content characteristics of courses in the liberal arts area regarding the basic nature of a major.

Research on Nurturing Innovative Talents Outside the Classroom Under The "Emerging Engineering Education" Concept

The formulation of the "emerging engineering education" concept has promoted the reform of talent nurturing. In the exploration and practice of nurturing innovative talent, the learning outside the classroom has become an important medium of quality education with its flexible, extensive, and novel qualities, alongside the irreplaceable role of the classroom in educating individuals. This paper objectively analyzes some problems of nurturing innovative talents in colleges and universities under the "emerging engineering" concept, discusses the positive role of learning outside the classroom in cultivating the innovation skills of college engineering students, puts forward principles to be followed in the systemic design of nurturing innovative talents and proposes suggestions to better fulfil the role of learning outside the classroom. At present, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, marked by the application of the Internet, big data and cloud computing has spread rapidly, and in the coming decades, a new wave of scientific and technological revolution and industrial change will form a historic intersection with the development of human society, and the progress and innovation of engineering science and technology will become an important driver of human development. Facing the challenges of the new wave of scientific and industrial changes under the new arena of international competition, the concept of "emerging engineering education" has guided the direction of development and reform of Chinese engineering colleges and universities, and the formulation of "emerging engineering education" requires that the engineering talents nurtured must have a mindset that fulfils the needs of the new economy, especially innovation awareness and ability. As an important medium to nurture students' innovation skills and quality development, learning outside the classroom in colleges and universities plays an increasingly prominent role in cultivating innovation consciousness, stimulating potential, and shaping personality. With its flexible, extensive, and novel qualities, alongside the nurturing role that cannot be replaced by classrooms, learning outside the classroom is crucial for quality education. After years of exploration and development by the education sector and higher-education institutions, learning outside the classroom in colleges and universities is not just a simple supplement and extension of classroom teaching, but has gradually developed into an important educational and teaching component for nurturing talents and platform for cultivating students' innovation skills and improving their overall development. Therefore, it is extremely meaningful to objectively analyze the problems of nurturing innovative talents outside the classroom under the "emerging engineering education" concept and give corresponding suggestions, so as to nurture students with strong practical abilities, creativity, and internationally-competitive, comprehensive engineering talents in colleges and universities.

Assessing the impact of digital education and the role of the big data analytics course to enhance the skills and employability of engineering students.

This study aims to explore the role of digital education in the development of skills and employability for engineering students through researching the role of big data analytics courses. The empirical study proposes the hypothesis that both soft and hard skills have positive effects on human capital, individual attributes, and the career development dimensions of engineering students. This is achieved through constructing a framework of three dimensions of engineering students' employability and two competency development dimensions of big data analytics courses. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 155 college engineering students and a structural equation model (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses. The results found that courses on big data analytics have a positive impact on engineering students' abilities in both hard skills (p < 0.01) and soft skills (p < 0.001) dimensions, while soft skills have a more significant impact on engineering students' employability. The study has practical and theoretical implications that further enriches the knowledge base on engineering education and broadens our understanding of the role of digitalization in enhancing the skills and employability of engineering students.
