Adjustment among Adolescents of Guwahati City in Relation to Gender and Religion

<p>Adjustment of adolescents in relation to their gender and religion was investigated. Gender (Male and Female) and religion (Hindu and Muslim) were treated as independent variables whereas adjustment was treated as a dependent variable. The sample comprised of 282 high school students (from class IX and X) of state Government schools of Guwahati city that belonged to lower middle-income group. The multi-stage sampling method was used for selecting the sample. Upadhyay-Saxena Socio-Economic Status (USSES) Scale, Adjustment Inventory for School Students (AISS) and Personal Information Data sheet were administered to all the participants. Mean, Standard Deviation and ANOVA were calculated to analyze the responses. The findings of the study revealed that females are better adjusted in the areas of emotional adjustment, educational adjustment and also in terms of total adjustment in comparison to males, which implies gender has a significant effect in the area of emotional adjustment, educational adjustment and also in the total adjustment of the adolescents. But no significant difference was found in the area of social adjustment between male and female adolescents. Further, it was found that religion has no significant effect on the adjustment among adolescents, which means that there is no significant difference in the adjustment of Hindu and Muslim adolescents of Guwahati city. </p>

A Study of 9th Grade Students’ Perception Regarding School Climate

The Present Study was focused on study of perception of school climate among students of 9<sup>th</sup> grade. This study helped to understand the feelings of students’ regarding the school environment where they spend five to six hours per day. School climate is the quality and attributes of a school. It includes school’s rules and regulation, norms, behavior, support system, expectations etc. Everything that is a part of school environment, which eventually plays an important role in shaping the overall personality of children, falls under the category of school climate. The subject of the research concerns the perception of school climate among 9<sup>th</sup> grade students of North – West zone in Delhi. This study was conducted on 120 students (60 each from both schools). Students’ perception regarding school climate was studied using ‘The School Climate Scale’ developed by Dr. Shivender Pratap Singh & Dr. Ali Imam. This climate scale consists of 18 statements of on five point scale namely strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree and strongly disagree ranging from 5 points to 1 point respectively. The responded respond on the various aspects of climate in school such as freedom, cooperation, motivation, enjoyment of schooling, discipline, health and hygiene, fee structure, equal opportunities, support of faculty and administration. The findings of the study indicates that majority of students have fairly good and satisfactory level of perception regarding the climate of school. In addition it was found that teacher’s and faculty support, discipline, opportunities provide a positive impact on students. In addition to this it was found that 9<sup>th</sup> grade Government and Private school students have different perceptions about the school climate. On the other hand, on the basis of mean values, it was observed that private school students have significantly better perception towards school climate in comparison to their government school counterparts.

AN ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL MEDIA USE AND ITS IMPACT ON MENTAL HEALTH OF FEMALE STUDENTS

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the use of social media on mental health of 10th grade female students. Eighty female secondary level government school students served as the sample of the study. A free to use questionnaire on “Effect of social media on mental health”, available on Survey Monkey website was used in the study. After ethical clearance, the researcher administered the questionnaires on the subjects. To identify the positive or negative effect of social media on mental health Chi square (x2) test was applied on the obtained data. This study identifies the relationship between social media and health threats. The finding of the study shows that social media affects the mental health of the user students. Hemophobia In High School Students, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India

Hemophobia fear of blood, is a type of specific phobia. The present study was aimed to know the Hemophobia among 8th to 10th studying students in rural and urban Government schools. The response was taken from 3399 students (8th:1175, 9th:1095, 10th:1129). The study found that the phobia was more in Namburu school students (21.31%). In the urban schools the highest percentage was noticed in SJRR school (28.96). Homeopathy, Exposure based therapy, Cognitive therapy are some of the useful treatment methods. Parents shall not neglect any specific phobia, which can influence the future.

Factors Affecting Academic Success -A Study on 10th Class Students of Rural and Urban Government Schools, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India

Student’s academic success depends and various factors, some of them are concentration, memory, friends, health, handwriting, fears and phobias, etc. Six questions were put before the students and the response was taken. A total of 1198, 10th class students was participated from rural (517) and urban (681) schools, in and around Guntur Municipal Corporation. The study revealed that significant variation is present between rural and urban students in relation to memory and handwriting. 34.15% of rural students were expressed recall problem against 19.41% of urban school students. But 22.45% of urban students were highlighted handwriting problem. It is only 14.15%, in the case of rural students. The percentage of other factors were more or less similar for rural and urban students.

Background: Promoting oral self-care capacity and the use of fluoride toothpaste is an appropriate strategy for the prevention of oral diseases among schoolchildren, especially in a developing country like India. Aim: To assess the oral health behavior of fluoridated toothpaste usage among parents of 12-year-old schoolchildren in Mangalore, South India. Prevalence of dental caries among 5 & 12 years old children - A retrospective data analysis

Background: Dental caries is an important social problem in India and is predominantly a disease of childhood. While there has been a great decline of caries incidence in high-income countries, the middle- and low-income countries suffer a high rate of incidence. It is due to the increasing consumption of refined carbohydrates, poor oral hygiene, and lack of dental awareness. This study aimed at the prevalence of dental caries among 5- and 12-year-old children in Tirukalukundram Taluk. Materials and Methods: A retrospective data analysis was performed with the data collected from the government school students in Tirukalukundram Taluk in 2018–2019. Registers containing data were screened for dental caries. Results: Among 515 study participants, 291 were male and 224 were female. The prevalence of dental caries is high among male compared to female children. Conclusion: The prevalence of dental caries is high in 5-year-old children than 12–year-old children. The filled component is nil in 5-year-old children. This clearly illustrates the utilization pattern of dental care services by the children. Hence, efforts should be taken to educate the rural people and government schoolchildren on oral hygiene and its maintenance.

Study on Career Goal Of 9th Class Government School Students, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India

Life without a goal is no life at all. At the school level goal set by the students may be based on assumptions but not on reality. Normally, students studying in Government schools have a poor financial background. Once set a goal without having matured and considering the facts it leads to depression in the future. So, the present study was chosen to observe the career goal preference of 9th class students studying in government schools. 10 Zilla Parishadh High schools from the Guntur Rural area and seven Guntur Municipal Corporation schools were selected for the study. A total of 1165, 9th class students from rural (594) and urban (571) schools was participated and given their response. Statistical analysis was carried out to compare the goal differences between rural and urban students. From the study significant difference is noticed between rural and urban school students in relation to doctor and police. High percent of students from rural schools preferred doctor profession compared to urban and more urban students chosen police compared to rural. The teachers and parents are to assess the appropriateness of the set goal by considering the students strengths and weaknesses and their family background. If necessary, they have to guide the students to change their goal.

Study on Knowledge and Practices of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene among Secondary School Students

Background: Provision of adequate water supply, sanitation, hygiene and waste management in schools has a number of positive effects. The study focuses on children because disease related to water; sanitation and hygiene are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity among children. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study comprised of 220 students. Participants involved were Government school students of grades 9-10 in Sindhupalchowk and Bhaktapur. Data consisted of hygiene and hand washing practices, knowledge about sanitation and personal hygiene characteristics. Results: This study revealed that knowledge regarding water borne disease was high among Urban school students 86.5% but knowledge regarding transmission route seemed inadequate in both urban and rural students (35% and 16% respectively). The practice on hand washing was found high (94.4%).There was significant difference in the knowledge of students regarding WASH in urban and rural settings of the school (P value<0.001). Treated water facility and hand washing facilities with water was found lacking in rural schools. Schools from the urban area had proper hand washing facilities, but there was not any soap available in both the areas. Conclusions: The knowledge and practice of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) among secondary school students is still poor. The knowledge of WASH in secondary school students when compared to the rural areas, urban areas had better on the basis of knowledge score.Keywords: hygiene; knowledge; practice; water; sanitation.

PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESS FOR SECONDARY STAGE FEMALE STUDENTS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO SOME ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL VARIABLES

The term psychological stress refers to incompatibility with the environment and self-image, and try to reduce incompatibility to avoid emotional tension accompanying the maintain a sense of self and refer to internal or external changes that will lead to a severe, ongoing and more effective response of adolescence Age stages undergoing psychological, emotional and mental changes so this change leads to psychological stress. The present study aims to reveal the relationship between the psychological pressure of female students and their relationship to certain environmental and social variables. The researcher has identification of a single (300) secondary female student sample, in the age of 14 - 18 years. The researcher used the (descriptive) curriculum, and applied the following measures: (Measure of psychological pressure), (measure of environmental variables), (Social variables measure) and (Preliminary data form) on students in (government schools) and (private schools). The study has produced some results, among the most important of which is a correlation between pressures Psychological and social variables among secondary students. There is a correlation function between psychological pressures and environmental variables among secondary students. The study has made a series of recommendations, the most important of which is to reduce the psychological stress experienced by female students in terms of developing Curricula and the provision of appropriate material possibilities, taking into account the individual differences among students in the classroom with the need to manage the grade well and understand the needs and desires of female students. The school should work to balance the number of teachers, the size of the school, the number of departments, and the number of female students so that there is no pressure to effect the process of education in accordance with its objectives.

DEVELOPMENT OF HEALTH EDUCATION MODULE FOR THE SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH EDUCATION INTERVENTION TO IMPROVE THE KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICES ON PEDICULOSIS CAPITIS

ABSTRACT Background: Pediculosis capitis is a common infestation among the school-aged group. Necessary intervention must be taken to prevent and manage the problem. A full study using cluster randomized control trial is proposed to assess the effectiveness of a health education module on the knowledge, attitude and practices on Pediculosis capitis among government primary school students. If the intervention is effective, it can be generalized to the whole primary schools across the country. Therefore, this paper will discuss on the development of a school-based health education intervention to improve the knowledge, attitude and practices on Pediculosis capitis among the government primary school students. Materials and Methods: Literature review was done to examine the prevalence of Pediculosis capitis and its determinants. Based on the findings, a health education intervention module based on KAP Model was developed for the implementation at a school level. Contribution by the panel of experts was attained for the development of the module. Validation of the module was carried out to ensure it is suitable to be implemented and will be effective in preventing and managing Pediculosis capitis . Expected Result: The health education intervention is effective to improve the knowledge, attitude and practices on Pediculosis capitis of the respondents as compared to baseline. Conclusion: Preventing Pediculosis capitis and controlling its risk factors by a well-developed health education module will help to obtain the desired outcome which is the reduction of Pediculosis capitis and improvement of knowledge, attitude and practice on Pediculosis capitis among the respondents. Socioeconomic differences in prevalence of biochemical, physiological, and metabolic risk factors for non-communicable diseases among urban youth in Delhi, India.

This study examined whether the distribution of biochemical, physiological, and metabolic risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among children and youth in urban India vary by socioeconomic status (SES). Data were derived from a cross-sectional survey of students enrolled in the 2nd and 11th grades in 19 randomly selected schools in Delhi (N = 1329) in 2014–15. Mixed-effect regression models were used to determine the prevalence of risk factors for NCDs among private (higher SES) and government (lower SES) school students. After adjusting for age, gender, and grade we found the percentage of overweight (13.16% vs. 3.1%, p value < 0.01) and obese (8.7% vs. 0.3%, p value < 0.01) students was significantly higher among private relative to government school students. Similarly, significantly higher percentage of private school students had higher waist circumference values (7.72% vs. 0.58%, p value < 0.01) than government school students. Furthermore, similar trend was observed across schools in the distribution of other NCD risk factors: raised blood pressure, raised total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein. Surprisingly, despite a higher prevalence of all risk factors, significantly higher percentage of private school students had adequate/ideal levels of high-density lipoprotein. Overall, the risk profile of private school students suggests they are more vulnerable to future NCDs.

Physical Activity Among Adolescents in India: A Qualitative Study of Barriers and Enablers.

Inadequate physical activity (PA) levels are reported in Indian youth, with lowest levels among adolescents, particularly girls. We aimed to identify barriers to and enablers of PA among school children in New Delhi and examine potential differences by gender and school type (government vs. private). A total of 174 students (private school students = 88, 47% girls; government school students = 86, 48% girls) aged 12 to 16 years from two Delhi schools participated in 16 focus group discussions (FGDs) conducted by bilingual moderators. We conducted FGDs separately for girls and boys, for students in Grades VIII and IX, and for private and government schools. We conducted FGDs among government school students in Hindi and translated the transcriptions to English for analysis. We coded transcriptions using a combination of inductive and deductive approaches, guided by the "youth physical activity promotion model." We identified various personal, social, and environmental barriers and enablers. Personal barriers: Private school girls cited body image-related negative consequences of PA participation. Social barriers: Girls from both schools faced more social censure for participating in PA. Environmental barriers: Reduced opportunity for PA in schools was commonly reported across all participants. Personal enablers: All participants reported perceived health benefits of PA. Social enablers: Several participants mentioned active parents and sports role models as motivators for increasing PA. Few environmental enablers were identified. This study highlights the need for further investment in physical activity within schools and for gender-sensitive policies for encouraging PA participation among adolescents in India.

Relationship between Emotional-Behavioral Problems and Academic Achievement among Government and Private Schools Children

This study was set out to compare the emotional behavioral problems and academic achievement among Government and Private school students. A sample of (N =239) children from government and private schools, including 120 girls and 119 boys, of ages 13 to 17 years were selected using convenient sampling technique. It was a quantitative research and a cross-sectional research design was used. The emotional-behavioral problems of students were checked by administering Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) by Goodman (1997) and the students percentage of marks in the last examination was taken as their academic achievement. The results revealed a significant links of emotional-behavioral problems and academic achievement among overall government and private school children. Study further identified the significant difference in emotional differences in emotional behavioral problems and academic achievement among government and private school children. The study also explored that the academic performance was good in private school children as compared with government school children whereas, emotional behavioral problems of private school children was higher than government school children.

Role of parents in the development of social competency among adolescents

ABSTRACTAdolescence, the transition period between childhood and adulthood, is a period of great risks and possibilities. Teen years comprise a period of intense growth not only physically but also morally and intellectually. The adolescence has traditionally been portrayed as a state of internal civil war. In the period of revolutionary change, social competence refers to the social, emotional, and cognitive skills and behaviors that child need for successful social adaptation. So in this critical period of change, parents have to deal their child with proper guidance, love, and sympathy to enable his or her to tackle various problems of adolescence of his or her life. This may successfully bring about the welfare of the society and help the child to grow into the distinct individual. In this paper, an attempt is made to explore the connection between parental role and development of social competence among adolescents using effective tools covering various dimensions. A sample of 160 adolescent students of various schools of Ajmer district of India in the age group of 13 to 18 years was randomly selected covering male-female students, rural-urban students, and students of government and private schools. Tools developed for parental role scale and social competence scale were administered. Various statistical techniques were applied on the data collected. ANOVA test results show that three groups of parental role, e.g., higher parental role group, average parental role group, and lower parental role group, significantly differ in achieving social competence. Based on the findings, the paper presents educational implications.
