An empirical study about the impact of project‐based learning on reading literacy of primary students in a blended learning environment

AbstractReading literacy is the core component of Chinese literacy and the basic ability needed in students' personal development. From the experience of international curriculum and teaching reform, project‐based learning is an important way to train students' core literacy. In this context, this paper explores the impact of project‐based learning on reading literacy of primary school students in blended learning environment by adopting a mixed‐method design. The results show that, compared with traditional teaching, project‐based learning is more conducive to promoting primary students' reading behavior and attitude, improving their reading level and reading comprehension ability with two reading purposes. This finding provides empirical evidence and practical guidance for Chinese teachers in primary schools when implementing project‐based learning.

Relationship Between Assessment for Learning and English Learning Motivation of University Students in Blended Learning Environment

Abstract Recently, assessment for learning (AFL) has gained increasing popularity by researchers worldwide. It is generally accepted that AFL enables students to optimize their learning process and improve their learning proficiency through various informal assessment. This study aims at investigating the relationship between AFL and English learning motivation at university level as well as students’ perceptions of this kind of assessment in a blended learning course. Blended learning combines the advantages of traditional face-to-face classroom teaching with online learning in order to provide a better learning environment. Both quantitative and qualitative method were used in the study. The quantitative data comes from two questionnaires: Assessment for Learning Questionnaire for Students which consist of Monitoring and Scaffolding part was used to investigate students’ perceptions of assessment for learning and the Motivation Subscale of Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire was selected as the instrument to measure students’ motivation, which was furthered divided into value component, expectancy component and affective component. 115 university students from Hubei Province of China completed the two questionnaires. The data collected were analyzed using SPSS 22.0. Qualitative data were collected from semi-structured interviews with the selected 6 students. The results of correlation analysis show that intrinsic goal orientation and task value of value component is positively correlated with AFL. Expectancy component is positively correlated with AFL. There is no significant correlation between extrinsic goal orientation and AFL. AFL is not significantly associated with test anxiety. Both monitoring and scaffolding factors contribute to the increase of students’ motivation. Results of the interviews indicate that students with high language proficiency are more willing to accept AFL. It is suggested that AFL should be advocated and applied in teaching language course in China. Future studies are needed to investigate the influence of AFL on students’ learning outcome in an all-around way. 융복합 블렌디드 러닝 환경에서 간호대학생의 자기주도학습력, 학습동기가 학습만족도에 미치는 영향

본 연구는 간호대학생을 대상으로 학습효과를 향상시키기 위한 학습전략으로써 블렌디드 러닝을 적용하여 자기주도학습력, 학습동기, 학습만족도와의 상관관계를 확인하고 학습만족도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 규명하기 위해 시도된 조사연구이다. 연구대상자는 D대학교 성인간호학 수업에 참여하는 학생 140명으로 7주 동안 면대면 수업과 6주 이러닝 수업을 진행한 후 2014년 6월 9일부터 6월 14일까지 자료를 수집하였다. 연구결과, 일반적 특성에 따른 변수들의 차이는 없었으며, 학생들의 학습만족도는 자기주도학습력과 유의한 상관관계가 있었다(r=.25, p=.003). 자기주도학습력이 학습만족도에 영향을 미치는 관련 요인으로 설명력은 22.1%로 나타났다(F=20.74, p<.001). 본 연구를 통해 간호대학생의 학습만족도를 향상시키기 위해서는 자기주도학습력을 고려한 블렌디드 러닝 콘텐츠 개발이 요구되고 다양한 블렌디드 러닝 운영방법에 관한 연구가 필요하다고 본다. The purpose of this research was to investigate factors influencing learning outcomes and effects of self-directed learning ability and motivation on learning satisfaction of nursing students in blended learning environment. A survey was used, and the subjects were 140 undergraduate students participated in Adult Nursing lesson at D University. Data collected from 9 to 14 June, 2014. There were no significant differences among general characteristics. Self-directed learning ability and learning satisfaction had significant correlations with each other (r=.25, p=.003). Self-directed learning ability was significantly associated with learning satisfaction, explaining 22.1% of the variance (F=20.74, p<.001). The results suggest that further research is needed to consider self-directed learning ability of students and to test the advantages of blended learning in developing contents in blended learning.
