Dream/Space/Object … Death/Mother/Bird

By four o'clock Friday afternoon I had discovered the Blue Bird Café—alone in anonymous dislocation, drinking a richly bitter espresso—between the university campus where I would begin a weekend workshop, Dream/Space/Object (for graduate painters and sculptors), and my attic room in the student house. Four hundred miles away—as the crow flies—my mother died from the prolonged degenerations of Alzheimer's Disease.

Determinants of graduates' demand for housing

During the early 1990s the number of UK graduates increased substantially while the number of young first time home buyers was diminishing and student loans began to replace maintenance grants. In the light of these changes, this paper examines the influences on home ownership based on a sample of 1991–95 Coventry University graduates. Significant explanatory variables are years of work since leaving university, household income, living with a partner, children and a lump sum inheritance or gift. Student loans, age, gender, house prices and relative buy/rent costs do not significantly affect the probability of home ownership.

Management skills from different educational settings

Describes research conducted in The Netherlands in the spring of 1992 among students of higher educational and academic institutions. The research set out to discover whether living in a room, student house or residential on campus contribute to the development of certain skills ‐ in particular, management skills. Concludes that the skills which halls of residence students acquire are in the field of planning and organizing activities, while the skills of students living in a student house are more in the areas of control and co‐ordination. Argues that, beside the compulsory nature of an educational programme, professional socialization effects are also generated by groups of friends, the influence of a student society, the work experience of the student and also the way the type of housing for the student is organized.

Davis-Christopher Textbook of Surgery: The Biological Basis of Modern Surgical Practice

What a monumental task and what a monumental accomplishment by the editor! When I was a medical student and young house officer, Christopher's<i>Textbook of Surgery</i>was a necessary constant companion; every page was to be learned. Dr Sabiston's 11th edition is no longer just a simple text for the beginning student but is a source book for the maturing house officer and practicing surgeon. The beginning 582 pages are devoted to an in-depth discussion of the general scientific principles that constitute the basis of modern surgical care. Examples, chosen randomly, are MacLean's classification and methods of analyzing the varying syndromes of shock and Powers's excellent "how-to-do-it" flow sheet for the identification and treatment of problems affecting renal function in the surgical patient. The role of a halfway house in social work education.

#{149}A social work student who lives in and works as a parttime manager of a psychiatric halfway house has an integrated work and education experience that facilitates the development of social work skills. For the past eight years students at Boston University School of Social Work have participated in such a work and education program as live-in managers at Berkeley House, which accommodates about 23 young adults. Under the current program, a student house manager in the second year of training can arrange to receive academic credit for a portion of his work at Berkeley House. He can earn one half-day per week of fieldwork credit. He spends the remaining two and one half days of fieldwork per week in supervised clinical work at McLean Hospital, a training site for Boston University School of Social Work and the facility that operates Berkeley House. The unique combination of theory and practice increases the student’s sense of professional identity and enhances his feeling of competence in areas such as clinical interviewing, diagnostic assessment, group leadership, community relations, and program administration. The house manager uses the clinical social work methods of casework and group work daily. In addition, he gains valuable experience in collaborating with a variety of agencies and resources in the community. Social casework-focusing on the psychosocial aspects of a person’s life-is a major portion of the house manager’s work. Emergency Abdominal Surgery in Infancy, Childhood and Adult Life

Emergency Abdominal Surgery extensively reviews the management of all types of abdominal catastrophes. The book, unfortunately sparsely illustrated, nevertheless is an invaluable handbook for the student and surgical house staff. The early chapters dealing with preoperative and postoperative care present practical recommendations. This early portion of the book also includes abdominal emergencies in the newborn, apparently a favorite subject of the author, a consultant in pediatric surgery at the University of Aberdeen. The text discusses the usual abdominal emergencies, such as appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, perforated ulcer, hematemesis, and melana, as well as unusual subjects of specialized interest (gynecologic, urologic, and others). The author approaches these conditions from the standpoint of etiology, incidence, diagnosis, and management. Numerous references from the world surgical bibliography are sometimes as recent as within one year of the book's publication. The authors admirably fulfill their stated purpose of providing a practical guide for those engaged in the day-to-day management of thoracic surgical Such pithy, didactic manual, devoted entirely to the practice of thoracic surgery, fills real void. The 18 chapters of the manual can be roughly divided into the following categories: general principles (radiology, respiratory insufficiency, diagnostic procedures); the pleura and empyema; pulmonary resection; mediastinal tumors; esophagus and diaphragm; heart and great vessels; tuberculosis; and cardiac arrest. It is devoted almost entirely to the preoperative and postoperative management of thoracic surgical patients. Emergency Room Care.

This 400-page second edition has been revised, after four years, expressly with an eye to the full-time emergency room physician, although it will probably still appeal mainly to the medical student and junior house officer newly assigned to duty in the emergency room. Several chapters have been completely rewritten and one on drug abuse added. In general, the book is informative and to the point, well organized, and adequately illustrated. Many of the chapters are organized in a 1-2-3 cookbook fashion which should be both appropriate and appealing to the reader for whom it was written. Of equal importance in a book of this type is a good cross-referenced index which unfortunately this book lacks. For example, the discussion of the approach to of in the book is excellent but neither blindness nor loss of vision are listed in the index. Insect bites are not listed, stings are.

Hernia Repair Without Disability

Dr. Lichtenstein's monograph on hernia repair is a valuable contribution not only for the practicing surgeon but also for the student and surgical house staff. The text is succinct, brief, readily understandable, and well-illustrated both with original drawing and with numerous well-selected redrawings adapted from the work of other authorities. He emphasizes the value of local anesthesia and its lack of complications, and he presents a very clear step-by-step description of his own technique of field block. In describing the classical types of operative treatment, he discusses many important key principles in hernia repair. The method of repair he advocates for inguinal hernia, direct or indirect, is essentially the Halstead technique in which he approximates the transversus abdominis aponeurosis to the iliopubic tract and the shelving portion of the inguinal ligament with strong nonabsorbable sutures and closes external oblique fascia beneath the cord. Anatomy for Surgeons: vol 1, The Head and Neck

Those who believe anatomy is a dead subject will be astonished to find out how many studies Dr. Hollinshead and his readers find important among those that have been published since 1954, the year of the first edition of this work. This revision of the first of the three volumes expands and improves on a superb and unique text of surgical anatomy. It is of particular value as a book of reference with emphasis on variations in location, and neural and vascular connections of anatomic structures. References are numerous and up to date. The division of the entire text into three volumes gives a roomy format, with easily readable print, and clear and perfect significant illustrations.
