The Development of Personal Letter Material Through Flipbook to Enhance Students Reading Comprehension

In this sophisticated era, the learning process is very minimal using books. Most students are more interested in learning by using applications as learning media, because it is fun and not boring. One of the applications that can be used as learning media is the Flipbook application. This Flipbook application can enter data in the form of images, videos, music, keys, animations, and also links to other sources into one. Based on the researcher's experience while teaching, the researcher found the problem that occurred in students, namely the low interest in reading students in English lessons. This research was conducted to find out whether this Flipbook application can improve students' reading skills in English lessons about personal letters to 11th grade students of PGRI Pekanbaru High School. The researcher took samples in class XI IPS with a total of 32 students. After conducting the research, the researcher found an increase that has been seen from the t-test. The t-test score obtained is 29.62%, while the p-value is 0.000 <0.05. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that there is an increase in reading comprehension ability regarding personal letters in grade XI IPS of SMA PGRI Pekanbaru.

The Effect of Storyboards Technique on EFL Sixth-Grade Students’ Reading Comprehension

The purpose of this study was to investigate how storyboards technique affect the reading comprehension of sixth-grade Jordanian EFL students. The participants of study were 30 female students, who were split equally and at random into two groups: the experimental and control. A pre-/post-test was utilized as the study's instrument for both the control and experimental groups. A quasi-experimental design was followed. The experimental group was taught utilizing the storyboards technique in order to fulfill the objective of the study, whereas the control group received instruction using a conventional teaching method. The findings demonstrated that the use of storyboards technique enhanced students' comprehension of the texts they were reading.

The Effectiveness of Google Sites in Differentiated Instruction to Increase Students’ Learning Motivation and Reading Comprehension on English Narrative Texts

This research explores the impact of using Google Sites for Differentiated Instruction on the learning motivation and reading comprehension of Grade XI students at SMK Negeri 4 Banjarmasin. The study aims to enhance literacy by integrating digital media into English narrative text instruction. A quasi-experimental design was employed, with an experimental group using Google Sites and a control group using conventional methods. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests measuring reading comprehension and questionnaire to describe learning motivation. The Independent Sample T-Test, Mann Whitney Test and N-Gain, and Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) were used for statistical analysis. The results indicated that the experimental group showed significant improvements in both learning motivation and reading comprehension compared to the control group. The use of Google Sites provided a personalized and engaging learning experience, contributing to these positive outcomes. In conclusion, integrating Google Sites into Differentiated Instruction effectively enhances students' motivation and reading comprehension. This approach addresses individual learning needs and leverages technology to create a more interactive educational environment. The study suggests broader implementation of digital tools in education to improve literacy skills and student engagement.

The effect of comic strips media towards students' reading comprehension in narrative text (an experimental study at the Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 1 Cijaku in the Academic Year 2023/2024)

This research paper aim to investigation the effect of comic strips media towards students’ Reading Comprehension in narrative text an experimental study at the Tenth Grade Students’ of SMAN 1 Cijaku. The research paper used the quantitative research design with the characteristics of experimental method that is design into two classes. They are experimental and control class. The population of this research is class X of SMAN 1 Cijaku, they consists 134 students. The sample of this research is X1 as an experimental class consists 33 students and X2 as a control class consists of 35 students. The total of sample is 68 students. The instrument is a test and data of this research are collected by giving pre-test and post-test. The data is analyzed using SPSS version 25.0 program including mean, standard deviation and t-test. It could be seen from the result of the post-test of experimental and control class. The findings reveal that the data analysis and interpretation of the research, it is clear there is a significant effect of comic strips media towards students’ reading comprehension in narrative text an experimental study at the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Cijaku. It can be seen, the minimum score pre-test is 15, maximum is 45, mean 26.14 and standard deviation 7.867. While the minimum score post-test control class is 20, maximum 60, mean 36.43 and standard deviation 9.360. Furthermore, the minimum score of control class is 15, maximum 50, mean 33.64 and standard deviation 8.685. While the minimum score post-test of experimental class is 30, maximum 60, mean 46.06 and standard deviation 8.174. The result of t-test obtained sig. value 0.000 ≤ ??? = 0.05. Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It can conclude that there is a significant effect of comic strips media towards students reading comprehension in narrative text.

Increasing inter-word spacing reduces migration errors and improves reading comprehension in students with dyslexia.

We report a small study in which we explored the effects of manipulating narrative text on levels of comprehension for students with and without dyslexia. Using two pieces of standardised narrative text deemed to be of similar difficulty and length, we manipulated the texts such that we could present two texts to each participant, one in each condition. The first condition was text using standard inter-word spacing; the second condition used increased inter-word spacing. Scores on standardised comprehension questions were significantly improved for participants with dyslexia. Additionally, given that there is evidence of delayed visual attention disengagement in individuals with specific forms of dyslexia, we hypothesised that the phenomena of migration of letters and words for some readers might be mitigated by increasing inter-word spacing. We did indeed find that incidence of migration was significantly reduced in this condition for all participants.

MEDIATING EFFECT OF STUDY HABITS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MATHEMATICAL READING COMPREHENSION AND PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

This study aimed to determine whether study habits significantly mediate the relationship between mathematical reading comprehension and problem-solving of students in mathematics of Grade 8 students in the Division of Davao del Norte. A descriptive-correlational research design was used. The respondents of this research were 302 Grade 8 learners from four public secondary high schools in Davao del Norte. A stratified random sampling was utilized. This study used one adapted questionnaire and two researcher-made questionnaires. Mean, spearman rho, standard deviation, and bootstrapping were used as statistical tools. Results of the study revealed that mathematical reading comprehension is infrequently manifested, problem-solving skills of students is rarely manifested, while the study habits of the students are oftentimes manifested. The findings further revealed that the variables mathematical reading comprehension and problem-solving skills are significant with one another but infrequently manifested that they are not significant with study habits. Moreover, mathematical reading comprehension exhibits a direct significant effect on problem- solving skills but study habits do not significantly mediate the relationship between mathematical reading comprehension and the problem-solving skills of the students. The results conclude that mathematical reading comprehension is contributory factor to improve the problem-solving skills of the students. The researcher recommends that the school administrators provide an opportunity to the teachers in professional development programs to improve students’ mathematical reading comprehension and problem-solving skills. Improving Reading Comprehension of the First Year Students Through Directed Reading Activity (DRA) Strategy in Narrative Text

This study examined whether Directed Reading Activity (DRA) strategy could improve students' reading comprehension in narrative text and to know the factors that influence reading comprehension in class X students of SMAN 10 Pekanbaru. This research used classroom action research design with quantitative and qualitative approach. The way to select the sample was by asking the teacher which class had the lowest English score and the total sample was 35 students. Data collected using pre-test, cycle I, and cycle II. The results revealed that the average mean in the pre-test was 47 (poor), in cycle I was 70 (good), and cycle II was 85 (excellent). Based on the study’s results, it can be concluded that by using Directed Reading Activity (DRA) strategy, students' comprehension in narrative text has improved.

Exploring the Impact of SQ4R Technique on Reading Comprehension in 10th-Grade Students

The study was conducted with the primary objective of investigating the effectiveness of the SQ4R technique in enhancing the reading comprehension skills of 10th-grade students. To achieve this objective, a quasi-experimental research design was chosen, involving a single group of participants. The study cohort consisted of 40 10th-grade students from a secondary school in Thailand. The instruments were an SQ4R learning management plan and a specially designed reading comprehension test. Data analysis in this study was conducted using two distinct approaches. First, the effectiveness index (E.I), calculated as the ratio of E1 (process effectiveness) to E2 (product effectiveness), was employed to gauge the overall effectiveness of the intervention. Second, a paired sample test was utilized to determine any statistically significant differences between the participants' pre-test and post-test scores. The data collection process spanned an entire semester and was conducted within a public school in Thailand during the first semester of the 2023 academic year. The results obtained from this study unequivocally demonstrate the positive and constructive impact of the SQ4R technique on the reading comprehension abilities of the participating students. These findings not only contribute valuable insights to the field of education but also emphasize the practical utility of the SQ4R model in enhancing reading comprehension, particularly within the context of 10th-grade students in Thailand.

The Impact of Flipped Classroom Instructional Strategy on 7th Grade Students Reading Comprehension in Jordan: An Empirical Study

The current study investigated the impact of flipped classroom instructional strategy on 7th grade student's reading comprehension in Jordan. A semi-experimental pre-posttest design was used through a sample consisting of (43) female students from the 7th grade selected purposefully. These were randomly assigned into two groups, the experimental group consisted of (23) female students and the control group consisted of (20) female students. The experimental groups were taught through the Flipped Classroom strategy, whereas the control group was taught according to the guidelines and procedures of teaching reading from the teacher's book. The study's results revealed a statistically significant difference between the means scores of students of the experimental and control groups and reading comprehension posttest in favor of the experimental group taught using a flipped classroom. This study may help language students capitalize on simple and interesting technology such as CDs, DVDs, Electronic platforms, and interactive applications for presenting educational materials.

A comparative study of critical thinking implementation in face-to-face and online classrooms: Medical students’ critical thinking and reading comprehension

Background: The enhancement of critical thinking (CT) is an essential goal in the educational strategic framework of medical universities across the globe. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to evaluate the competence in CT abilities as well as the inclination of medical students to actively participate in CT practices. Moreover, educational decision-makers believe that granting medical students the opportunity to utilize technology can enhance their academic performance and stimulate their CT ability level. Hence, this research aimed to compare the influence of implementing a CT framework in traditional classroom settings and online platforms on the CT and reading comprehension of medical students. Methods: Over four months, two groups of 60 medical students (30 students in each group) were exposed to two environments of face-to-face and online English language instruction. The current quasi-experimental study was conducted at a general English language classroom, situated in Islamic Azad University, Kerman branch. Pre-tests and post-tests of CT and reading comprehension were used to measure learners’ improvements in CT and reading comprehension levels before and after the project. Results: The results of this study showed some improvements in the CT and reading comprehension abilities of both face-to-face and online groups (P<0.01). However, the improvements were particularly noticeable in the online group regarding the reading comprehension (M=17.98) and CT (M=107.462) variables compared to the face-to-face group (M=11.39) and (M=51.438). Conclusion: Medical education experts strongly believe that developing and nurturing CT skills among medical students is crucial for improving the overall quality of medical education. In today’s globalized era, the importance of CT cannot be overstated, as it equips students with essential skills needed to navigate complex challenges. Integrating CT into online learning environments is a testament to the progressive nature of medical education in the modern world.

The Use of Jigsaw Technique to Improve Reading Comprehension of The Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 12 Palu

This research aims to find out the use of Jigsaw Technique to Teach Reading Comprehension of the Eight-Grade students of SMP Negeri 12 Palu. This research used a quasi experimental design consisting of experimental and control classes. The sample of this research was two classes of eight-grade students, with the amount 51 students of VIII A and VIII B. This research used a total sampling technique. In the process of collecting the data, the researcher used an instrument which contains of multiple choice and essay test. The result of the data analysis shows that the mean score of the experimental class significantly increased from 57.78 to 77.78, while the mean score of the control class increased from 60.36 to 69.52. The researcher found that the t-counted was higher than the t-table (4.65>1.678). It means that the hypothesis was accepted. In conclusion, the use of Jigsaw Technique can be applied by teachers in teaching and learning process as one of effective technique to improve Student’s reading comprehension.

Grammatical understanding predicts reading comprehension in secondary-level students: insights from a Finnish national survey

A lot of research into the relationship between explicit grammatical understanding and literacy development in L1 contexts has focused on writing. A lot less is known, however, about the interconnectedness of explicit grammatical understanding and reading. This study investigated the relationship between grammatical understanding and reading comprehension in Finnish 9th grade students. Using national assessment data (N = 6,044) and multilevel quantitative analyses, the study found that explicit grammatical understanding accounted for a significant portion of the variance in reading skills, even after controlling for various background factors such as school, family socioeconomic status, homework and book reading habits, attitudes towards studying L1, and writing ability. The findings suggest, without implying causality, that understanding language structure and making explicit metalinguistic observations are closely connected to reading comprehension. The study encourages further research on the benefits of explicit grammar teaching for reading comprehension using different study designs. Additionally, it highlights the need to investigate how grammar instruction can be linked to reading, as well as explore the effectiveness of such instruction in different educational and linguistic contexts.

Predicting Reading Comprehension: Investigating the Influence of Multiple Variables Through Multiple Regression Analysis

Reading comprehension is a skill that can aid pupils in grasping the meaning of a text or gaining new insights from it. This study investigated the influence of multiple variables on reading comprehension and identified the key factors that contribute to reading comprehension. It utilized the descriptive-correlational method to describe the relationship between multiple independent variables and reading comprehension. It was conducted in one of the elementary schools in Himamaylan City during the school year 2022-2023, utilizing 50 Grade 6 students who were selected using total enumeration. The researcher utilized the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory to determine students’ reading comprehension and standardized instruments in measuring various variables in reading. It was revealed that out of the ten variables considered, it was reading fluency (t=-2.197, p=0.034), nonsense word fluency (t=-2.018, p=0.050), phonological awareness (t=2.923, p=0.006) and phonemic awareness (t=-2.809, p=0.08) were found significantly related to the reading comprehension of the students. These four variables are the key factors that impact reading comprehension and help them better build an understanding of the text. Using multiple regression analysis, it was found that reading fluency, nonsense word fluency, phonological awareness, and phonemic awareness are the influential variables in the students’ reading comprehension indicating the essence of primary language development. Moreover, phonological awareness is significant in developing the student's reading comprehension. It is recommended that the development of reading comprehension in the primary grades be given a focus through proper intervention.

Implementing Extensive Reading with Wattpad to Improve English Students Reading Comprehension at Senior High School Level

Reading comprehension is important, but low interest among middle school students has led to further research. Using the extensive reading method with Wattpad can improve students' reading skills significantly. This research aims to improve middle school students' reading comprehension by integrating Wattpad as a learning medium, offering an alternative method in English language education. This research uses statistical analyzes such as normality, homogeneity, Howell game post hoc, and Welch's test. This research used a quasi-experimental design with the experimental group using Wattpad and the control group using traditional methods. A quasi-experimental design was chosen because there are external variables that are beyond the researcher's control. The research subjects consisted of two groups: the experimental group received extensive reading treatment with Wattpad, and the control group used traditional methods. . Analysis of this research data confirms the effectiveness of extensive reading with Wattpad. Statistical tests show normality, homogeneity, and significant differences between the experimental group and the control group. These findings are in line with previous research which shows that extensive reading significantly improves students' comprehension skills. In conclusion, this research provides strong evidence that extensive reading with Wattpad has a positive impact on comprehension student reading.

Enhancing Students' Reading Comprehension Skills through the RADEC Model: A Focus on Elementary Education

This study proposes the utilization of the RADEC (Read, Answer, Discuss, Explain, Create) learning model, a structured approach that incorporates independent reading, collaborative discussions, peer explanations, and creative activities, as an intervention to enhance reading comprehension skills. Its objective is to investigate the impact of the RADEC learning model on the enhancement of reading abilities among fourth-grade students learning Indonesian. This study employs a non-equivalent post-test only control group design, with the experimental class using the RADEC model and the control class employing conventional teaching methods. The study included all 78 fourth-grade students from SDN 20 Kurao Pagang, divided into two classes. Random sampling yielded 22 participants in the experimental group and 23 in the control group. Data collection was conducted using evaluation tests, and the average reading comprehension scores were 82.72 for the experimental class and 63.58 for the control group. Data analysis began with initial assessments, including normality and homogeneity tests, followed by hypothesis testing using the t-test. Findings revealed a noteworthy enhancement in reading comprehension scores within the experimental group in contrast to the control group, as evidenced by a significance value of (0.000.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. The results of this study highlight the potential of the RADEC learning model as an innovative solution for increasing students' reading interest and reading comprehension skills at the basic education level. These findings inform curriculum development, teacher training programs, and educational policies in Indonesia to enhance reading comprehension outcomes.

This study used classroom action research to investigate if the L-R-D method may improve reading comprehension in the VIII class at SMPN 4 Kuta Utara. There were two sessions per cycle of this two-cycle classroom action research methodology. Pre- and post-tests, as well as a questionnaire, were employed by the researcher as data collection tools. The pre-test results from the first reflection were used as the foundation for this investigation. The results demonstrated the students' persistent struggles with reading comprehension and their inability to discriminate between references, textual meaning, specific information, and general information. After taking the pre-test (58.9), cycle one post-test (72.8), and cycle two post-test (81.4), the respondents' mean scores showed a substantial improvement. Additionally, the results of this study indicated favourable attitudes about the application of the L-R-D approach. The results of the questionnaire indicated that 46.08% agreed, 2.77% agreed, 0.28% disagreed, and 0% strongly disagreed, with 50.85% highly agreeing. The L-R-D technique may improve the reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMPN 4 Kuta Utara, according to the study's findings.

Evaluating computer science students reading comprehension of educational multimedia-enhanced text using scalable eye-tracking methodology

In this research, a mixed-method approach was employed to conduct large-scale eye-tracking measurements, traditionally associated with high costs and extensive time commitments. Utilizing consumer-grade webcams in conjunction with open-source software, data was collected from an expansive cohort of students, thereby demonstrating the scalability and cost-effectiveness of this innovative methodology. The primary objective of this research was to discern the disparities in reading behaviour when students were presented with standard text accompanied by illustrations, compared to the same text with highlighted key terms. The participants, comprised of first-year university students, completed a questionnaire and an introductory test to ascertain their knowledge level. Subsequently, they were segregated into two groups and participated in two reading sessions, during which their ocular movements were recorded. The amassed data underwent both qualitative analyses, facilitated by visualizations, and quantitative analysis, employing statistical measures on the data and test results. Notably, no significant difference was observed in the gaze patterns or test results between the experimental and control groups. However, a significant divergence in gaze patterns was identified between high-achieving students and those experiencing difficulties, as evidenced by the averaged composite heatmaps generated from the data. The findings underscore two pivotal points. Firstly, the feasibility of conducting large-scale eye-tracking experiments is demonstrated. Traditional studies in this field often employ small population samples due to the time and financial constraints associated with methods that utilize specialized eye-tracking hardware. In contrast, our methodology is scalable, relying on low-end hardware and enabling students to record data on their personal devices. Secondly, while eye-tracking may not provide substantial benefits for fine-tuning text already optimized for readability, it could serve as a valuable tool for identifying and assisting learners who are struggling. This mixed-method approach holds significant potential to revolutionize the conduct and interpretation of eye-tracking studies within educational settings.
