What Really Matters in Secondary-Level Students’ Classroom Participation: A Study from the Student’s Perspective

Effectively Increasing student classroom participation has always been a crucial challenge for secondary teachers. The present study aims to address the factors that contribute to increased student participation in the classroom, therefore fostering an improved learning environment from the secondary-level students’ perspective. This study uses a qualitative research approach to explore specific aspects of teachers' behavior that impact student participation. Through focused group discussions, students share their diverse experiences and perspectives, the dimensions of teachers’ particular behavioral influence on active engagement in the classroom. The findings shed light on teachers’ content delivery skills, the role of teachers’ rapport building, the impact of teachers’ willingness to explain in depth, and the influence of teachers’ voices. The study suggests valuable insights for educators striving to create a more conducive and participatory learning atmosphere in secondary education. How using a response system in blended synchronous seminars encourages online and onsite student participation

AbstractThe interest in blended synchronous learning environments has increased dramatically since the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a key challenge is how to simultaneously encourage online and onsite student participation. Response systems have been found to stimulate student participation in classroom and online education settings. This study investigates how online and onsite students participate in blended synchronous seminars where a response system is being used. The data comprises observations of blended synchronous seminars, students’ written reflections, and student interviews, all of which were thematically analyzed. It was found that using a response system encouraged online and onsite students to participate in various ways. Although online students mostly remained quiet, they perceived to engage through listening and thinking, participating in the seminars by absorbing information, and interacting with the content displayed via the response system. The onsite students participated vocally and more spontaneously. All students participated in written, anonymous, and game-based modes, suggesting that there were different and complementary ways for students to participate when using a response system, which extended beyond merely talking or chatting. Notably, most students perceived the response system crucial to their participation in the blended synchronous seminars. The findings underscore the importance of encouraging student participation in blended synchronous learning environments, highlighting response systems as effective tools to encourage onsite and, particularly, online student participation.

The Jigsaw Learning Model to Promote Engagement in the English Language Classroom: A Teacher’s Reflection

Learning activities employing the lecture model have induced boredom among students and resulted in poor participation in the classroom, including in the English as a foreign language class. Low student participation in classrooms may impede the development of their skills. The jigsaw cooperative learning model provides an opportunity for students to collaborate and actively participate. This collaborative action research aims to assist students in addressing engagement issues in English lessons through the jigsaw cooperative learning model. The collaborative action research involved a cohort of 36 primary school students, comprising 20 females and 16 males, in the city of Purwokerto, Indonesia. Data was collected through observation, and the observational data obtained were then analyzed using descriptive statistics. After three cycles, student engagement increased from 56% (baseline) to 65.56%, 75.56%, and 79.44%, respectively. The desired criteria for intervention success (75%) were met in cycle 2, leading to the conclusion of the investigation in cycle 3. Based on the results, it can be inferred that the adoption of the jigsaw learning model has effectively enhanced student engagement in the English language class. Practical implications of the study are then presented.

STEAM Education Concept in English Teaching Practice Process Based on Big Data Evolutionary Network Influence Analysis

INTRODUCTION: English language teaching in China is primarily traditional test-based education. Few teachers customize teaching activities according to the content and students' characteristics, which results in students' low interest in learning English and reduces their understanding and application of knowledge to the point that their speaking skills are generally weak. English is different from Chinese in that it combines skills and practice and covers a wide range of knowledge. It is a subject category that combines general knowledge of life with theoretical knowledge. Although it is only a language subject, in the process of learning it, students can also learn the human background, customs, history and culture of foreign countries, enriching their understanding of world culture.
 OBJECTIVES: Organic combination of the STEAM model and English teaching can promote academic innovation, on the one hand, to enhance learning hobbies from the aspect of learning needs and to cultivate students' comprehensive literacy, and on the other hand, the innovation of practice and concepts can enhance students' practical ability and innovation ability.
 METHODS: This study is based on big data evolutionary network influence analysis of STEAM education concept in English teaching time process analysis of students in the classroom participation, interest in learning English and learning self-confidence and the phenomenon of mismatch between the students' learning foundation, to enhance the student's classroom participation, the interest in learning English and self-confidence, the students' comprehensive literacy, and the acquisition of English language skills.
 RESULTS: STEAM + ELT practices + interdisciplinary teaching can be realized by organically combining STEAM education concepts across multiple subject areas.
 CONCLUSION: Designing appropriate English teaching activities based on the STEAM education concept and applying the theory in actual teaching activities can achieve the expected results.

Factors Influencing Classroom Participation: A Case Study of Undergraduate Students at Education Faculty, Paktia University

There was a lack of students’ participation in classroom activities. Student participation varied according to gender, education level, housing area, and employment, language proficiency and cultural restrictions. It was needed to discover factors that influence students’ participation in classroom activities, to address the current situation and key challenges of classroom participation. Therefore, the objectives of the study were to distinguish the factors that increase and decrease student classroom participation and to investigate the most influential factors that affect classroom participation. In addition, the research recommends sustainable resolutions. The methodology adopted includes the use of questionnaires, two classes of observation in the English department, and a review of relevant documents. The size of the class, a lack of time, and the course policies that were observed in class were major barriers to student participation in class activities. Teachers did not give students enough time to consider the question before responding. The current survey found that the personalities of the instructor and students, the size of the classroom, and the perception of peers influenced students' willingness to speak up in class. It is pointed out that both active and passive students agree that instructors are the main characters in classrooms. The method or style of teaching and positive traits of instructors play an important role in motivating and stimulating verbal engagement among students in the classroom. Students actively participated when they received an equal chance to participate in the classroom. When there was respect, small classes, student support, constructive feedback, and the application of theory to a real-life situation, participation levels in classes were higher. Moreover, teachers must consider and overcome those factors to give students a chance to communicate effectively in classroom participation.

Self-Efficacy as a Tool to Enhance Students’ Classroom Participation: TVET/FET College’s Student Views on the Causes of Student Passivity

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to shed light on the role of self-efficacy in enhancing the classroom participation of students at Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in an attempt to improve performance in general. The context of the study was TVET/Further Education and Training (FET) colleges that came into being in South Africa to fill the critical skills gap. The efficiency of TVET colleges in meeting their mandate of developing qualified artisans has continued to be a matter of intellectual debate. This study used Bandura’s theory to explore students’ views on how self-efficacy contributed to their passivity in class, a situation resulting in the poor performance of students. A qualitative research design was used and 30 participants from three TVET College campuses were selected, using a purposeful sampling technique. Data was collected by conducting three focus group interviews and a document analysis. The thematic qualitative data analysis approach was used to analyze the collected qualitative data. The findings of the study established that the low self-efficacy of teachers and students has led to student passivity in class, something that ultimately led to students’ poor performance. Among the recommendations made were the prioritization of professional training programmes for TVET lecturers by the Department of Education and the creation of a conducive teaching and learning space.

Participación en el aula y formación ciudadana para la democracia: un análisis de caso

El objetivo del artículo es comprender cómo la participación cotidiana del alumnado en un salón de clase de secundaria en un liceo chileno contribuye a su formación ciudadana para la democracia. La metodología cualitativa con enfoque etnometodologico usa técnicas de revisión documental, observación participante, y entrevistas no estructuradas. El análisis es de tipo inductivo general. Los resultados develan una falta de definición de la participación en los documentos institucionales y una participación pasiva o por consulta consensuada en el aula, donde sus intervenciones espontáneas son consideradas interrupciones irrelevantes e ilegítimas en sus formas de expresión. Se concluye que la participación del alumnado contribuye negativamente en el desarrollo de sus competencias democráticas.

The Effect of Educational Videos on Increasing Student Classroom Participation: Action Research

This study assesses the effect of the use of educational videos on the participation of 24 students at the Applied Science University in Bahrain. The findings revealed that educational videos that were selected either by the researcher or by the students have a direct and positive effect on increasing the students’ participation in the classroom. It was found that the educational videos that were selected by the students have a greater effect in this respect than these videos selected by the researcher.

The Impact of the Contents of Educational Informatics Network on Classroom Participation of Students in Teaching the Subject of the Musculoskeletal System

The purpose of this research is to determine the impact of the contents of Educational Informatics Network on participation of students in teaching the subject of musculoskeletal system. In the study, the quasi-experimental design is preferred. Furthermore, the opinions of the students are given a place which added qualitative dimension to the study. The data set used in the study was gathered from the Classroom Participation Inventory. In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistical techniques, normality analyses and independent t-test were used. At the end of the study, a significant difference was found in favor of the experimental group. Considering mean scores the experimental group for affective participation, cognitive participation and non-participating were more than the ones of the control group. According to students' views, it was determined that the EIN contents are beneficial and helpful for learning terms better, and the classes are enjoyable.

Student Participation and Its Impacts on Perceived Service Quality in Higher Education: An Empirical Study

In higher education service, college students are no longer as the passive recipients of educational service and actually co-produce their education. However, despite the importance of student participation in the delivery of educational service, student participation has not received much attention in the literature. The purpose of study aims to explore the impact of student participation on perceived quality in higher education. The Survey results suggest that student classroom participation and extracurricular learning were found to positively influence student perceived service quality. Finally, implications for higher educational institutions’ managers are considered.

Using Analytics to Support Instructor Reflection on Student Participation in a Discourse-Focused Undergraduate Mathematics Classroom

This paper describes a method for using instructional analytics to support changes in teaching practice. The study took place in a discourse-focused undergraduate mathematics classroom taught by an experienced instructor. Using the classroom observation tool EQUIP and social network surveys, we generated quantitative data on patterns of student participation in this classroom that were presented to the instructor at the end of the semester. Our analysis focuses on how the instructor made sense of these analytics and ultimately changed his teaching practices in a future semester. This paper provides insight into how three data sources can be triangulated—classroom participation, student experiences, and teacher perspective—to better understand discourse-based participation in undergraduate mathematics. We also discuss the implications of using this methodology for faculty professional development.

Using Cogenerative Dialogs to Improve Science Teaching and Learning: Challenges and Solutions in High School Students’ Internships

Internships in science research settings have received increasing attention as a means of helping students construct appropriate understandings, practices, tools, and language in scientific activities. To advance student–scientist partnerships beyond the status quo, the study aimed to investigate how cogenerative dialogs (cogens) may help high school students and scientists identify and address challenges collectively. The analysis identified nine major challenges discussed during cogens: (1) the quality and progress of scientific practice in laboratories, (2) the quality of scientists’/assistants’ instructions in classrooms, (3) the quality of student participation in classrooms and homework, (4) students’ absences, including arriving late or leaving early, (5) the quality of administrative support, (6) preparation for scientific presentations, (7) the process of deciding project topics, (8) students’ peer interactions and communication, and (9) students’ physiological needs. The three most salient challenges were “the quality and progress of scientific practice in laboratories” (39%), “the quality of scientists’/assistants’ instructions in classrooms” (20%), and “the quality of student participation in classrooms and homework” (17%). The study shows that cogens allowed students and scientists to agree on teaching modifications that positively influenced teaching and learning processes during the internship, such that issues were reduced from the beginning to the closing stages. Importantly, the challenges and solutions identified by students and scientists in this study provide accounts of first-hand experience as well as insights to aid program directors or coordinators in designing a learning environment that can foster effective practice for internships by avoiding the issues identified in the study.

Research on the Optimization of Contemporary Classroom Teaching in Colleges and Universities

In order to improve the enthusiasm of professional technology level, this paper explores a set of suitable education training mode and the corresponding management measures to improve reform and practice of college curriculum and teaching. According to the usual experience summary of students of environmental engineering, this paper displayed a detailed description of how to carry out the reform of classroom teaching based on process management. That is the way on the college teaching process, the mode of classroom environment and the implementation methods. Practice shows that the process management of teaching classroom environment can greatly enhance the enthusiasm of the students based on learning, improve the teaching effect, to adapt to the current application type talents demand, has the value of popularization and reference. Reform the teaching classroom environment and increase the intensity of interactive teaching and learning, learning and learning, improve student participation in classroom the extent to enhance classroom teaching quality is important.

Curriculum reform in China: student participation in classrooms using a reformed instructional model

This study examined how Chinese educators and teachers implement curriculum reform in mathematics classrooms, through an example of the reform in one district in China that is promoting a reformed instructional model called the DJP model. The data used in this study came from a project that followed teachers in this district for two years. By analyzing 64 classroom videos from 16 teachers, this study showed how students participated in classroom activities after using the reformed instructional model. Furthermore, the effect of teachers⿿ attitudes on implementation of the reformed model is discussed. The results show that the DJP model had a positive effect on increasing student participation, while teachers⿿ attitudes played a key role in this process. This study can contribute to a broaden context by suggesting an efficient way to increase student participation and highlighting the important role teachers play in implementing curriculum reform.

Student engagement research: thinking beyond the mainstream

Student engagement is highly visible in higher education research about learning and teaching, but lacks a single meaning. It can be conceived narrowly as a set of student and institutional behaviours in a classroom or holistically and critically as a social–cultural ecosystem in which engagement is the glue linking classroom, personal background and the wider community as essential contributors to learning. The narrow view is characterized as a mainstream view of student engagement, and the holistic and critical view as thinking beyond this mainstream. The article first discusses the mainstream view. Here, engagement is seen as a generic indicator of quality learning and teaching and successful student outcomes. Second, it critiques this view, arguing that it is too narrow and should embrace the more holistic vision. Third, the article discusses a holistic view of student engagement. Foremost, it advocates active student participation in classroom and curriculum management, wider community development through critical active citizenship and personal and social well-being.

Encouraging Classroom Discussion

Classroom discussion has the potential to enhance the learning environment and encourages students to become active participants in the educational process. Student participation in classroom discussion has been shown to significantly improve the student learning experience. Research suggests that classroom discussion is an effective method for encouraging student classroom participation and for motivating student learning beyond the classroom. Participation in classroom discussion encourages students to become active collaborators in the learning process, while at the same time providing instructors with a practical method of assessing student learning. Classroom discussion is an effective tool for developing higher-level cognitive skills like critical thinking. Despite the potential discussion holds for student learning, many in academia lament the lack of participation in the classroom. The lack of student participation in classroom discussion is not a recent problem; it is one that has frustrated instructors for decades. Instructors report that some of the more current methods for encouraging classroom discussion can be exasperating and at times non-productive. This two-year study of 510 college and university students provides insight into the reasons why some students do not participate in classroom discussion. This study, which also elicited input from sixteen college and university professors and two high school teachers, offers some suggestions for creating and encouraging an environment conducive to student participation in the classroom.

Incidencia de la forma de evaluar los docentes de Educación Primaria en el rendimiento de los estudiantes en España

The way teachers assess in classroom impact over cognitive and socio-affective development of the students. This paper aims to determine the relationship between the teacher’s evaluation to their students, and the academic achievement of their students in four specifi c areas: Linguistic Competence, Mathematical Competence, Scientifi c Competence, and Social and Citizenship Competence. To reach our aim, this paper made a special analysis with the data of the Spanish General Diagnostic Evaluation –2009– to 28,708 students, and 1341 teachers of 887 schools. The use of Multilevel Model Analysis with three levels shows the impact of each evaluation strategy on the four competencies studied. Our study confirms those teachers who prepare exams after each lesson, give homework, review notebooks, and value the interest and participation of students in classroom do better. On the other side, we have found an inverse relationship between prepare quarterly exams and the skill development of the students.

The Dynamics of Student Participation in Classroom: Observation on Level and forms of Participation

Effective learning process occurred when both teachers and students interact and participate in the learning activities. Participatory type of learning process will encourage mutual exchange of information's; stimulate interest as well as recognition of respect among the teachers and students. This paper discusses the level of involvement and forms of involvement in three classrooms over a period of five (5) weeks contact hours. The observation was done on two undergraduate classrooms and one postgraduate classroom. The aim of observation is to identify the category of students in terms of active or passive involvement and the types of participation.

The Effects of Cooperative Learning on the Classroom Participation of Students Placed at Risk for Societal Failure

A multiple baseline design across two subjects was used to determine the effectiveness of cooperative learning techniques on increasing student participation. The study was conducted on two male secondary students attending the upward bound pre-college program. Each student worked in small groups with specific roles, and two observers documented the amount of time each student participated during the cooperative learning activities. The results showed that cooperative learning techniques increased student’s participation.
