V SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE “POLITICAL PROBLEMS OF INTERNATIONAL SYSTEMS AND GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT”

Scientific conference for teachers, PhD students, and Master students who study in the specialty 291 International Relations, Public Communications and Regional Studies, with the participation of the Dean of the Faculty of International Relations, Political Science and Sociology Viktor Glebov, Head of the Department of International Relations Olga Brusylovska, lectors and guests of the University, took place on May 12, 2022 at the FIRPS ONU named after I. I. Mechnikov. Among the issues considered at the conference were: the analysis of the theory of international relations (О. Konovalenko, D. Poble), main problems of international relations (S. Glebov, А. Zakharchenko, Y. Maistrenko, I. Maksymenko), and foreign policy of the states (E. Chiriac, О. Kondrashova, V. Loziichuk, М. Skrypnyk).

The Surgical Journal x Youth Pioneers in STEM International Youth Medical Conference

The Surgical Journal x Youth Pioneers in STEM International Youth Medical Conference is a two day, virtual conference for high school students, pre-meds, and medical students around the world organised by The Surgical Journal and Youth Pioneers in STEM. 100 participants internationally attended the workshop on ‘’Introduction to Clinical Research’’ by our keynote speakers which was followed by a case diagnosis competition during which students are given the opportunity to analyze, research, hypothesize, and determine the correct diagnosis, exactly like a doctor would! Abstracts in this booklet are provided by the top 5 teams nominated by our panel of judges.

Graduate students would benefit from guidelines for preparing conference abstracts

Graduate student writing is finally receiving substantial scholarly attention, but little is known about the characteristics of the unstructured graduate student conference abstract (GSCA). This study seeks to characterize the rhetorical structures of GSCAs, as a basis for identifying potential writing support strategies. 107 French-language GSCAs from language-related fields (e.g., linguistics, second-language teaching) were coded using Hyland’s rhetorical moves (RMs) (Background-Aims-Methods-Results-Conclusion), yielding measures for RM frequency, RM sequencing, and RM recycling. We then use these measures to identify GSCAs that pattern together, via K-Means clustering. We find that the GSCAs studied pattern into three subtypes, two of which (72%) exhibit informational and/or structural shortcomings, most notably (1) missing RMs, (2) cognitively difficult RM sequences, and (3) unbalanced word-to-RM allotment. This study thus confirms that there is a need to implement strategies (e.g., conference submission guidelines) to better support graduate students in mastering this academic genre’s normative content and structure.

IEEE EMBS International Student Conferences -Insights From 2022 Editions.

Student members within IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) are one of the most active segments among all other membership levels. Student-led initiatives all around the world have shown the necessity to give students the opportunity to present solutions to educational challenges, aiming to make the learning of young people an enriching and continuous experience while honing their organizational skills. IEEE EMBS SAC [1], formed under vice president for member and student activities, has taken the responsibility to initiate and implement programs for undergraduate and graduate student members of the society. One of these programs, IEEE EMBS ISC, is the flagship event under the oversight of the Professional Development Portfolio. The purpose of the ISCs is to help students learn to manage an IEEE-style conference in a low-pressure environment and improve on their soft skills like leadership, communication, teamwork, and project management. Moreover, it gives them a platform to practice giving and receiving peer feedback on scientific writing and presentations, as well as making international connections which could turn into future collaborations.

Shifting Ground: Reflections on Research Relationships in the Time of Covid-19

The Graduate Student Conference held at York University’s Graduate Faculty of Education in April of 2022 afforded all four authors occasion to share the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on our doctoral research. Each of our projects involved face-to-face research and required significant methodological adjustments and changes to research design in order to continue amidst a worldwide pandemic. Through the application of social adaptation theory and the practice of auto-ethnography, our discussion panel examined the significance of requisite reconfiguring of our projects on our research relationships. This paper offers post-panel reflective thoughts on how the discussion that took place during the panel has inspired further thinking about our research with drama students, international students, Rohingya refugee families, and refugee children, as well as our development as researchers.

SAFER: An Occupational Health and Safety Teaching Framework for Nursing Students

Occupational health and safety (OHS) education is integral to healthcare practice. Nurses/nursing students are particularly vulnerable during their work in this high-risk industry. Current clinical teaching appears to focus on individual risks rather than provide a broader overview of the complex issues involved. A novel educational resource, the Safety Assessment Framework for Evaluation and Assessment (SAFER), is presented, addressing a gap in current education resources for nursing students to broaden understanding about OHS. The study re-examined pilot focus group data from first- and third- year student OHS focus groups in an Australian university School of Nursing. The SAFER framework was informed by student nurses impressions/ experiences of OHS (published in 2015 and 2016), supported by a literature review. Central to the SAFER framework is OHS ‘risk management’. It incorporates stakeholders and Australian legislation, all in relation to ‘responsibility’ and ‘trust’. Examples use focus group participant voice, linked with researcher interpretation and supporting documentation. Clinical educators now have a broad resource to facilitate student group discussions about OHS from multiple perspectives. SAFER’s value beyond face validity should be tested, to confirm its applicability as a teaching resource in various university and training environments. University academic journal and annual research-to-practice conference for graduate and postgraduate students: Cooperation problems

Research-to-practice conference, the theme of which matches the content of one or several journal sections, is considered as one of ways to solve the problem of new authors’ calling to the journal. On the one hand, the role of conference’s media partner is an element of journal promotion. Оn the other hand, the partnership with University conference for graduate and postgraduate students imposes additional load on editorial staff. When their workload is already high in a routine mode, they delegate conference papers’ editing and prepress to authors that can’t ensure high quality of publications. Moreover, if conference papers are published simultaneously with publication of journal articles based on conference reports the problem of text authenticity arises (i.e. self-plagiarism). These circumstances cause journal staff to doubt whether participation in university conferences as media partner makes sense.

Albania is a country where very little has been said about intellectual and industrial property. The chosen topic is a necessary topic to be addressed as intellectual property is in great need of experts in this important field. Many certain individuals make works like in music, in various arts, poetry, various scientific articles, the production of a trademark in the market, but they do not know their rights and obligations arising from intellectual property. In this paper it is important treatment of the albanian legal framework versus the european legal framework related to intellectual property. The study of European Union directives and international court decisions is very important as it helps us make the necessary changes in the law by applying the principle of proportionality.
 It is also important in case of copyright infringement to have legal protection. Legal protection can be done with a lawyer or self-defense. Legal protection is very important as it is a principle recognized by the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
 We live in the digital age where every service is available online, but high technology has brought many problems ranging from the physical and psychological formation of the child to the copyright infringement. This is a global issue and many websites have tried to protect the rights of copyright or inventor. Dealing with cases in a practical way would make the work more interesting, but also more practical.
 I have participated in conferences such as the NATO Model Conference, National and International Student Conferences and I have also conducted training in the field of legal protection of authors & inventors. In the trainings I participated in I received an important message was "Motivation is the important weapon of success".

Publication activity of future pediatricians: analysis of current practice

Stimulating scientific activity in students of higher medical educational institutions is one of the important tasks of the current healthcare system. However, should this be limited to student journals and conferences only? Can students apply for publication in major scientific journals on an equal basis with renowned scientists? In our work, we determined how often medical students publish articles in peer-reviewed pediatric journals and whether the scientometric indicators of their work differ from the general array of articles. We manually selected 2,618 publications of the journals «Practical Pediatric Problems» and «Russian Bulletin of Perinatology and Pediatrics» using the information analysis system of the Scientific Electronic Library, of which 74 articles (2,8%) were written with the participation of students. They do not differ significantly from the total number of publications based on to the main scientometric indicators, such as the total number of citations of publications, the average number of citations per article, and the number of articles cited at least once. This indirectly suggests that these materials comply with the accepted standards of publishing practice typical for peer-reviewed scientific journals. We believe that, under the guidance of experienced teachers, future pediatricians can not only contribute to the collection of materials for research and their statistical processing, but also, possibly, offer new ideas based on advanced medical knowledge.

СИСТЕМНО-ДІЯЛЬНІСНИЙ ПІДХІД ДО ФОРМУВАННЯ ДОСЛІДНИЦЬКОЇ КОМПЕТЕНТНОСТІ МАЙБУТНІХ ПЕРЕКЛАДАЧІВ ЗАСОБАМИ ПРОЄКТНОГО НАВЧАННЯ

The article reveals the essence of the system-activity approach to the formation of research competence of future translators by means of project-based learning and identifies its features in the process of their professional training in higher education. The content of the concept of “research competence” is analyzed and it is established that the basis of research competence is the ability to identify the problem in time, formulate a hypothesis, select and analyze the necessary information for research, select the necessary research and data processing methods. The ability to analyse the intermediate results of the study, to discuss the possibility of interpreting the results of the study, to use the results of the study in practice is required. It is noted that the methodological basis for the formation of research competence of future translators by means of project-based learning at higher education institutions is a modern approach to scientific knowledge. This is a system-activity approach. The system-activity approach in the research is considered as a methodological direction of management of socio-pedagogical systems, which involves the presence of interconnected and interdependent activities in the pedagogical process (teaching, education, management, development, learning, etc.). In the course of theoretical analysis, the main ideas of the system-activity approach in the context of formation of research competence of future translators are revealed. Emphasis is placed on the fact that training in the context of the system-activity approach should be organized in such a way as to purposefully form the research competence of future translators. It is established that the use of project-learning technologies allows to bring educational activities as close as possible to the conditions of professional research. The experience of implementation of the systemactivity approach in the formation of research competence of future translators at Alfred Nobel University is revealed. The formation of research competence of future specialists took place in three stages: the formation of skills in working with literature, which is a necessary skill when working on educational or scientific research; implementation of educational and research projects (in the first year – writing essays, in the second and third years – writing term papers and implementation of other projects of educational and research direction); extracurricular work of students (participation of future translators in student conferences, implementation of research projects of various kinds in such disciplines as “Comparative Lexicology of English and Ukrainian”, “Translation Practice”, “Self-Management”, “Linguistics of Second Foreign Languages”).

Contesting

This issue of Girlhood Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal, while unthemed in the sense that it comes out of an Open Call, reminds us that a foundational principle of Girlhood Studies remains one of contesting and challenging inequities. Furthermore, how girls themselves might, under some circumstances, take up critical issues in their lives is evident in these contributions. Each of the contributors has placed front and centre the idea of contesting. Recently in a publications panel at a graduate student conference, participants, eager to get their work published, wanted to know more about this journal. Two of their questions stand out. “May the articles be quantitative as well as qualitative?” and “Is it enough that at least half of my participants are girls?” This collection of articles responds beautifully to these questions in offering an affirmative to the question about quantitative and qualitive data when the point is to use appropriate evidence to contest gender norms, and a negative to being about representation in terms of simply including girls.

Co-Production of an Online Medical Student Conference: Inspiring Interest in Psychiatry

AimsThe aim of this project was to create a Pan-London event to increase awareness and enthusiasm of medical students for Psychiatry as a specialty. In addition to a longer term goal of ultimately increasing recruitment to the specialty once students qualify, this event aimed to bring Mental Health to the forefront of the minds of future doctors.MethodsPsychiatry Teaching Fellows from different trusts created a virtual educational event targeted at medical students in all years across London universities. It was co-produced with the student Psychiatry Societies across the London Universities. This encouraged student engagement from the ground level and fostered an environment of collaboration between students and Doctors. The event was free to attend and was supported by the Royal College of Psychiatry, London Division. The conference programme showcased the various facets Psychiatry has to offer from a global perspective, including Women's Mental Health, Forensic Psychiatry, research and volunteering around the world.ResultsThe conference welcomed 263 attendees. 92 of the attendees completed a feedback questionnaire at the end of the session. The majority of respondents were from London universities and fairly evenly distributed amongst medical school year groups. 99% of those completing the questionnaire found the session interesting (scoring 3 or more out of 5 on a 5 point Likert scale). 98% of respondents reported that they found the session widened their view of Psychiatry. 78% were already considering a career in Psychiatry. 96% felt more likely to pursue a career in Psychiatry following the conference (scoring 3 or more out of 5 on a 5 point Likert scale). Open-text feedback indicated that attendees had found the sessions interesting and particularly valued the range of topics.ConclusionExtra-curricular events are a fantastic chance to broaden medical students’ views of the specialty of Psychiatry. A virtual platform creates opportunities for audiences to hear from a vast array of expert speakers, which might not otherwise be possible in person, and creates a community of like-minded students in a safe environment. Whether or not students go on to pursue the field themselves later on in their training, events such as this bring awareness of Psychiatry and its impacts to the foreground. It is hoped that, in future, further co-produced events between the Royal College of Psychiatry and university Psychiatry societies, can continue to inspire medical students.
