The research and development is titled “Development of Pop-Up Book Media in Enhancing Literacy Culture in the Reading Corner Program at SMP Negeri 1 Berastagi.”This development research aims to determine: (1) The design of pop-up book media; (2) The development of pop-up book media in enhancing student literacy; (3) The feasibility of pop-up book media in improving student literacy. This research is conducted using a Research and Development (R&D) model with the 4D model, which includes Define (definition), Design (design), Development (development), and Dissemination (dissemination). The subjects of this research are students of SMP Negeri 1 Berastagi, totaling 35 individuals. The instruments used in this research include questionnaires to assess the development, feasibility, and effectiveness of the media. Data analysis techniques include product data analysis, initial data analysis, and hypothesis testing.The results show that the pop-up book media received evaluations of 81% from media experts, 92% from material experts, and 65% from language experts. There was an average increase in student scores of 83%, indicating a significant change between pretest and posttest scores. The conclusion of the research is that the pop-up book media for drama content is suitable for use in literacy activities of the reading corner program. Recommendations for future research include being more meticulous in planning the development of pop-up book media, ensuring it aligns with the needs and characteristics of students.

Impact of the Campaign for All ABC educational program and learning in students with incomplete schooling in an educational unit, Santa Elena

The general objective of this research was to determine the level of impact of the ABC Campaign Educational Program on learning in students with incomplete schooling, in an educational unit, Santa Elena, it is of a basic type with a correlational design. The data collected through the survey technique by means of questionnaires as instruments applied to a sample of 30 units of analysis, among students of both sexes of the levels of literacy, Basic Education, Intensive Higher Basic Education, Intensive High School of an educational unit of Santa Elena, the reliability is high for both instruments as can be evidenced in the Cronbach's Alpha. The results determined that the level of Impact of the ABC Campaign Educational Program on learning in students with incomplete schooling, demonstrating its impact at a high level with 93%, as well as for learning characteristics in students with incomplete schooling, 90% at a high level, the characteristics of the ABC Campaign Educational Program on academic performance in students with incomplete schooling 93% at a high level and 100% for motivation in students with incomplete schooling.

INVESTIGATING THE INHERITANCE PATTERNS AND POTENTIAL ASSOCIATIONS OF SELECTED HUMAN MORPHOGENETIC TRAITS

This research analyses the distribution, inheritance patterns, and potential associations between various physical characteristics(Handedness, Hand-clasping, Tongue-rolling, tongue folding and Hitchhiker’s thumb, Mid-phalangeal hair, bent little finger, Cleft chin, Widow’s peak, earlobe attachment & Dimpled cheeks) in students from the Faculty of Agriculture Sciences. The Chi-square was used of independence to assess inheritance patterns and potential links. The findings reveal interesting patterns: some recessive traits viz; Mid-phalangeal hair, bent little finger, Cleft chin, Widow’s peak, earlobe attachment & Dimpled cheeks were more common than their dominant counterparts. In contrast, dominant features such as handedness, hand-clasping, tongue-rolling, tongue folding, and hitchhiker's thumb were found more frequently. There is also a significant relationship between morphogenetic features (tongue rolling, mid-phalangeal hair, and widow's peak) and gender. This investigation has implications for several disciplines, including human genetics, forensics, and anthropology. Establishing a baseline for this specific population size group allows for future investigation into human variety and the intriguing realm of inheritance.

Effective Clinical Externships for International Medical Students: A Qualitative Study.

International student exchanges are a significant part of medical education, and experiences of North American and European medical students abroad have been extensively examined. By contrast, knowledge of visiting medical students in the United States (US) is limited largely to surveys of administrators and course directors. To understand US attending physicians' thoughts on visiting international student clinical externships. Three clinician-educator physician focus groups were conducted across two US medical schools with broad representation of training backgrounds, clinical disciplines, and career stages. Focus groups and constant comparison analysis of transcripts were performed iteratively to identify emerging themes. Qualitative themes and subthemes. Two main themes emerged from the data: (1) administrative requirements for success: hosting international students requires careful planning and coordination, which is daunting amidst demanding faculty responsibilities. Externships must address experiences of the people directly involved in the clinical setting, leadership, communication, and institutional, financial, physical, and personnel resources. (2) Impact of student qualities: When working with international students, the importance of administrative details and student characteristics increases due to higher student variability overall, inconsistent language and cultural fluency, and the consequent recognition of the student as an ambassador for their home institution and country. Amidst already busy schedules, clinician educators identify the hosting of international medical students as a commitment resembling that for their own trainees. Linguistic and cultural distances, and the overall variability of international students amplify the importance of effective administration. The findings have influenced related processes at the University of Pittsburgh.

Impact of Student Backgrounds on the Outcomes of Maritime Postgraduate Professional Education

Maritime taught postgraduate education plays a vital role in cultivating expertise within the ever-evolving global logistics industry. Notably, the diverse backgrounds of students are of great importance in this context, given the scarcity of undergraduate maritime programs and the industry’s demand for professionals from various disciplines. However, this diversity also poses a challenge to educators in terms of effectively training and evaluating these students. This study focuses on a maritime taught postgraduate professional program and investigates how student background characteristics affect their learning outcomes and academic performance. By utilizing both stated preference data (SP) and revealed preference data (RP) collected from a postgraduate maritime professional program in Hong Kong, the study aims to mitigate hypothetical bias and gain a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing student perceptions and experiences in maritime industry. The study measures five dimensions of student learning outcomes, including professionalism, strategic thinking, lifelong learning capability, career development, and academic performance. The findings suggest that student background characteristics have minimal impact on maritime learning outcomes, with only gender and undergraduate programs showing some influence. The study highlights the inclusive nature of maritime professional education, emphasizing that training quality, rather than personal background, is the key determinant of success.

A Survey Analysis of Motivations and Perceived Consequences of Work Hours Among Pharmacy Students.

To determine pharmacy students' weekly work hours during PharmD semesters, the primary reasons for working or not working, and how work hours impact their pharmacy education experience. A multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted among P1 - P4 students enrolled in PharmD programs at three colleges of pharmacy between January and February 2024. The 22-item anonymous survey queried about student characteristics, current and ideal paid work hours, primary reasons for working, and perceived consequences of work hours on pharmacy education. A total of 622 pharmacy students participated in this survey (61% response rate). Community pharmacies (39%, n=242) and inpatient hospital pharmacies (29%, n=179) were the most common work settings for participants. Mean reported student work hours per week were statistically higher than ideal hours (12.3 vs. 10.8). Most students were comfortable with their weekly work hours (63%, n=307). Academic commitment was the main reason for students working fewer than ideal hours (76%, n=65) while financial necessity was the primary reason for students working more than their ideal hours (86%, n=82). Reduced study time (90%, n=84), increased stress and fatigue (72%, n=67), and limited extracurricular involvement (59%, n=55) were consequences of working beyond ideal work hours. Most students are comfortable with their average 12-hour/week work hours. Financial necessity is a primary reason for students working more than their ideal hours, and excess work hours may contribute to reduced student engagement in pharmacy education. Faculty can use this information in their discussions with students balancing work and academic commitments.

Prevalence of depressive symptoms among urban school adolescents in Vietnam: The role of youth, family, and school relationships

BackgroundAdolescents frequently encounter a spectrum of psychiatric conditions, predominantly depressive and anxiety disorders, along with various behavioral disturbances. ObjectiveThis investigation aims to delineate the prevalence of depressive disorders among adolescents in urban Vietnam and to elucidate the interrelationships between familial and school-related dynamics and adolescent depression. Materials and MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2022, involving 507 students aged 15 to 17 from high schools in Hanoi, Vietnam. Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale - Second Edition (RADS-2) was used to assess the presence of depressive symptoms. Social-demographic characteristics, adolescent-family and adolescent-school relationships, and academic environment characteristics of high school students were interviewed. Multivariate Tobit regression models were employed to discern contributory factors across four domains of RADS-2. ResultsAmong the 507 adolescents, the mean scores on the RADS scale were 15.1 ± 4.2 for the dysphoric mood domain, 16.4 ± 4.0 for the anhedonia-negative domain, 13.1 ± 4.4 for the negative self-evaluation domain, and 12.4 ± 3.7 for the somatic complaints domain. The analysis indicated that adolescents with suboptimal parental relationships, absence of confidants, frequent parental conflicts, exposure to parental arguments, substantial exam-related stress, or overwhelming academic demands were more likely to exhibit elevated depressive symptoms. Conversely, adolescents who were satisfied with their friendships at school and received care, support from teachers or friends, and involved in school's extracurricular activities lower exhibited levels of depression. ConclusionsFindings reveal the significant impact of family and peer relationships, as well as academic stress, on the development of depressive symptoms. These significant results inform the design and development of future interventions aimed at mitigating depression risks among high school students, emphasizing the crucial roles of both educational institutions and family dynamics.

Demographic, academic, and clinical characteristics of college students hospitalized for psychiatric crises.

College students with psychiatric disabilities, particularly those with severe distress, have an increased risk of attrition from higher education. Highly distressed students may be hospitalized for psychiatric crises if there is a potential risk to their safety. Although college students' psychopathology has increased in severity over the last decade, hospitalized students remain an underresearched group at risk for attrition, trauma, suicide, and disconnection from their universities. The present study explored demographic, academic, and clinical characteristics of 880 undergraduate and graduate students hospitalized between Spring 2016 and Spring 2021 at a large public university in the southwestern United States. Study aims were addressed by testing proportional differences in (a) demographics of the hospitalized sample versus the student body and (b) cross-tabulations of demographic, academic, and clinical characteristics by hospital admission status (voluntary or involuntary). Results indicate that African American/Black and multiracial students; female, transgender, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, or other nonheterosexual orientations students; undergraduates; and liberal arts, fine arts, and undeclared majors may be at increased risk for psychiatric hospitalization. Gender identity, sexual orientation, semester hospitalized, initiating entity, university counseling center utilization, and the presence of high-priority symptoms and suicidality were significantly associated with hospital admission status. FUNDAMENTALS OF QUALITY ASSURANCE IN THE HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM

This study explores the critical issue of quality assurance in higher education systems, both in Kazakhstan and globally, where universities operate in a «consumer market» with students selecting educational programs, institutions, and resources. Based on an analysis of international and domestic research, the study aims to identify the foundations of quality assurance in higher education. The authors highlight key aspects of higher education quality, including student quality, teaching characteristics, academic regulations, and administrative support. Educational quality is examined within the context of international standards as a matter of national importance, with education levels serving as a foundation for economic development of both state and society. The research analysis reveals that various approaches, methods, and criteria for quality management are employed in creating systems for ensuring and assessing the quality of higher education institutions in Kazakhstan and abroad. These include the evaluative method of university activity quality management (SWOT analysis), Total Quality Management (TQM) strategy, and an approach based on the requirements of international quality standards ISO 9000:2000. The study notes that Kazakhstan has adopted a management model based on the ISO 9000:2000 international quality standards. This comprehensive review contributes to the understanding of quality assurance mechanisms in higher education and their implications for educational policy and practice.

Peningkatan Kemampuan Guru Reguler dalam Deteksi Dini dan Pengembangan Program Belajar Siswa Berkebutuhan Khusus di Surabaya

Inclusive education remains a challenging program to implement ideally, requiring ongoing management to continuously foster inclusivity in schools through various efforts. This service program aims to enhance the understanding of regular teachers in inclusive schools regarding the characteristics, early detection skills, and the development of learning programs for students with special needs. This is based on the principle that each student has unique needs, with some requiring special assistance from accompanying teachers. The program uses a needs analysis method, involving interviews and questionnaires to identify the needs of the teachers. Based on the analysis results, intervention objectives are set and a training program is designed. The intervention was conducted over two days: the first day focused on psychoeducation about inclusive education and understanding the characteristics of students with special needs, while the second day consisted of training in early detection and the preparation of specialized learning programs. The results of the intervention showed an improvement in teachers' ability to identify students' functional difficulties in physical, cognitive, and behavioral aspects. Teachers were also able to classify the characteristics of students with special needs and develop appropriate learning programs. This psychoeducation and early detection skills training effectively equips teachers in inclusive schools to be more optimal in identifying and designing learning programs for students with special needs.

Gender differences in Chinese Adolescents’ school refusal: A network analysis to test the contribution of individual, family, and school factors

To better guide school practitioners in identifying and intervening with instances of school refusal, this study employs network analysis to investigate the core manifestations among adolescents of different genders and explores the impact of various ecological factors on these characteristics. In this study, 910 middle school students in China (Mage ± SDage = 13.55 ± 1.06, 48.13 % boys) were recruited to complete a paper-and-pencil survey on school refusal and its related factors. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method was used to examine the network characteristics of school refusal and the potential influence of ecological factors on the core characteristics of school refusal. Results revealed that: (1) the core features of Chinese students’ school refusal were “I consider studying a burden”, “I often try to find ways to avoid studying”, and “Studying often makes me feel inwardly tense and anxious”, demonstrating gender consistency; and (2) there were significant gender differences in the underlying ecological factors that influence the core characteristics of Chinese students’ school refusal. Specifically, boys’ school refusal is more related to their parental academic involvement and teacher expectations. The higher the parents’ academic involvement and teacher expectations, the lower the boys’ school refusal. Girls’ school refusal is more related to personal educational values ​​(the value of academic success and the future utility of education). The more girls identify with the value of education, the lower their school refusal. This study utilized network analysis to reveal unique gender differences in school refusal among Chinese adolescents. It also explored the complex interrelationships between individual, familial, and school factors and school refusal, demonstrating how these factors contribute differently in boys and girls. These findings indicated potential theoretical directions for future interventions for school refusal among Chinese students of different genders.

The purpose of this study is to gather the experiences of engineering and science students participating in action learning within universities and to explore the factors that indicate the support they require from these experiences. To achieve this objective, the phenomenological research method proposed by Colaizzi(1978) was employed to identify the common experiences of the participants. A purposive sampling method was utilized to select six engineering and science students who engaged in action learning as research participants. Data were collected through unstructured in-depth interviews, participant observation, and a thorough literature review. The results revealed three categories, ten theme clusters, and twenty-five themes. Based on the characteristics of engineering and science students identified through their action learning experiences, their support needs encompass 'a deficiency in communication skills', 'challenges associated with selecting manufacturing companies', 'an increased necessity for persuasion and study due to the specialization of their majors', and 'a discrepancy in perceived task difficulty between instructors and students'. The role of facilitators in addressing these needs was also examined.

Is Online Education Working?

This study examines the impact of instruction modality on student learning outcomes, with a focus on disparities observed pre- and post-pandemic. Using administrative data from a public university spanning seven pre-pandemic and five post-pandemic semesters, the analysis controls for endogenous sorting using fixed effects. The findings suggest that face-to-face (FtF) instruction results in better student performance, such as higher grades and a lower withdrawal rate. Additionally, students with greater exposure to FtF instruction are less likely to repeat courses, more likely to graduate on time, and achieve higher Grade Point Averages (GPA). The study also shows that the FtF advantage has been decreasing over time, and the differences are smaller post-pandemic. The results are consistent across student and instructor characteristics, except for Honors and graduate students, where the FtF advantage is either smaller or statistically insignificant.

One of the reasons for the shortage of teaching staff in various countries around the world is the problem of attracting young staff to schools and their rapid dismissal. This situation actualizes the issues of studying the motivational bases for choosing a teaching profession. Tracking changes in students' career choice preferences can be facilitated by monitoring students' career orientations at different stages of their studies. The study aims to explore the dynamics of career orientations of student teachers from universities of various types over a three-year period of study. As a method of repeated research, the methodology for determining career orientations by Shein (adapted by Vinokurova and Chiker) was used. Analysis of the universities’ curricula was carried out to determine the characteristics of the educational process organization. With the help of a questionnaire, socio-demographic and motivational-professional characteristics of students were identified. Five hundred and four 3rd-year students from 6 universities of different types, who had already taken part in the first stage of the study in 2022, became participants in this study. The analysis of the obtained data allowed to identify the preservation of main career orientations (service, job stability and integration of lifestyles) among students. The convergence of the indicators of career orientations among students from different universities was established.

Prevention of extremism and terrorism in schools: experience of the republic of Dagestan

The article presents the results of the study of preventive anti-terrorist educational work among students of general education schools of the Republic of Dagestan. It is noted that this work with school youth is carried out systematically and comprehensively with the participation of not only teachers, but also external subjects of preventive influence on adolescents from among representatives of law enforcement agencies, various ministries and departments authorised in the field of youth, information and state national policy, cultural and art figures, representatives of the official Muslim clergy, athletes, deputies, veterans of the Special Military Operation and other public opinion leaders. It was revealed that the main format of this work is a thematic preventive conversation with schoolchildren, that requires certain pedagogical skills and competencies. Using a formalised expert survey of school teachers and a series of research interviews, an assessment of the effectiveness of this activity was identified, as well as problems that hinder the improvement of the quality of anti-extremist educational work with Dagestani youth. Noting the importance and usefulness of this work, the interviewed teachers point to a number of problems and factors that reduce its effectiveness. The workload of teachers with "paperwork", frequent demands for various kinds of reports on the work done, formalism, holding events without taking into account the age and individual characteristics of students, incompetence, lack of understanding and support from the parent community, weak interest in such events from both teachers and schoolchildren and a number of other factors hinder the improvement of the quality of anti-terrorist educational work with Dagestani youth. It seems that the prevention of extremism and terrorism is part of the general educational impact of the comprehensive school institution on a child, raising him to be a moral, law-abiding and patriotic citizen. To improve the quality of this work, it is important to raise the authority of school teachers at the state level, since a teacher without authority is a bad educator for teenagers not only in the area of countering the spread of the ideology of extremism and terrorism, but also in the matter of spiritual, moral and patriotic education in general.

Differentiation in the Process of Learning English by Future Ship Engineers

Traditional methods of teaching English do not always allow us to consider the individual characteristics of future ship- engineers, their learning pace, cognitive styles and level of training, which can lead to the loss of motivation to learn and failure to master the material in full. The article substantiates the basic principles of differentiated learning (variability of tasks, frontal work, pair/group, and independent assignments). The research describes multi-level tasks for groups, considering different levels of English language proficiency. It is emphasized that differentiated learning contributes to the development of various skills important for ship's engineers, such as critical thinking, solving professional problems, high-level English for communication in an international crew, teamwork, etc. The author emphasizes the need to plan tasks for each stage of the lesson for groups with different knowledge bases and levels of training. It is important to anticipate possible difficulties that students may encounter in mastering the material and to use differentiated individual tasks in the classroom system. The advantages of differentiated learning are revealed: considering the individual characteristics of students, increasing motivation to learn. The disadvantages are also pointed out, since differentiated learning requires considerable effort and time from the teacher to plan classes, prepare various materials and tasks. Criteria for assessing the knowledge and skills of future specialists are proposed, since students of different groups perform different tasks and study according to different programs when learning maritime English. It is emphasized that the systematic use of different types of exercises for a particular group, taking into account the topic, stage of study and didactic goals, is optimal for improving the assimilation of knowledge of students

Attitudes Towards Learning Communication Skills Among University Nursing Students

A major skill of nurses for achieving high-quality care is their ability to communicate effectively with patients, and this has been considered very valuable in the patient healing process. Objectives: To assess the learning attitudes of university nursing students towards communication skills and to find out the association of demographic characteristics of students with their attitude level. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study design was conducted on 230 student nurses studying in a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Permissions were obtained from the Ethical Review Committee and the Head of the Department for data collection. Data were collected via non-probability purposive sampling. Communication Skills Attitudes Scale was used to assess the attitude of university nursing students. Student's t-test and One-way analysis of variation were used to identify the differences in Positive Attitude Scores and Negative Attitude Scores between demographic variables. Results: Most of the study participants (77.4%) were male and 94% belonged to the age group 18-25 years. There was a significant difference in the Positive Attitude Score between gender and education of the students with p-values of 0.009 and 0.015 respectively. Furthermore, education level is the only variable that shows a significant association with a Negative Attitude Score with a p-value<0.0001. Conclusions: It was concluded that female students had more positive attitudes compared to their counterparts. Third-year students had a more positive attitude compared to other study years.

Strategic Management Approaches for Enhancing English-Speaking Proficiency in Language Education

This study explores effective strategies for teaching English speaking skills and the factors that influence implementing these strategies. The study discussed the strategies used in speaking learning, why they are chosen, and their implications for students speaking success. The strategies referred to in this study encompass methods, resources, and media used in achieving success in learning to speak English. The research method employed is qualitative with a case study approach. The study was conducted in March 2023 at some schools and English courses, with ten teachers serving as informants. Data collection was carried out through indirect interviews via WhatsApp and GoogleForm. The main findings show that role-play and chain drill methods are the most frequently applied strategies and are considered effective in improving students speaking skills. The main factors that influence the use of these strategies include students interest and the relevance of the material. The implications of this study highlight the importance of selecting strategies that are appropriate to students characteristics and learning contexts, and this study shows the need to adapt teaching methods based on the availability of resources and environmental support. The results of this study provide insights for educators to design and implement more effective speaking learning strategies and encourage further discussion on innovation in English language learning.
