TiO2 Nanotubes Decorated with Mo2C for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water-Splitting Properties.

The presence of Ti3+ in the structure of TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTs) has been shown to enhance the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting performance of these NTs, leading to improved results compared to pristine anatase TiO2 NTs. To further improve the properties related to PEC performance, we successfully produced TiO2 NTs using a two-step electrochemical anodization technique, followed by annealing at a temperature of 450 °C. Subsequently, Mo2C was decorated onto the NTs by dip coating them with precursors at varying concentrations and times. The presence of anatase TiO2 and Ti3O5 phases within the TiO2 NTs was confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The TiO2 NTs that were decorated with Mo2C demonstrated a photocurrent density of approximately 1.4 mA cm-2, a value that is approximately five times greater than the photocurrent density exhibited by the bare TiO2 NTs, which was approximately 0.21 mA cm-2. The observed increase in photocurrent density can be ascribed to the incorporation of Mo2C as a cocatalyst, which significantly enhances the photocatalytic characteristics of the TiO2 NTs. The successful deposition of Mo2C onto the TiO2 NTs was further corroborated by the characterization techniques utilized. The utilization of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) allowed for the observation of Mo2C particles on the surface of TiO2 NTs. To validate the composition and optical characteristics of the decorated NTs, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV absorbance analysis were performed. This study introduces a potentially effective method for developing efficient photoelectrodes based on TiO2 for environmentally sustainable hydrogen production through the use of photoelectrochemical water-splitting devices. The utilization of Mo2C as a cocatalyst on TiO2 NTs presents opportunities for the advancement of effective and environmentally friendly photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems.

Synthesis, surface properties, crystal structure and dye-sensitized solar cell performance of TiO2 nanotube arrays anodized under different parameters

In this paper, TiO2 nanotube arrays were prepared by anodic oxidation method. The effects of water content, anodizing time and sample post-treatment on the morphology and crystal structure of TiO2 nanotube arrays were systematically investigated. We explored the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on dye N-719. The TiO2 nanotube arrays prepared under different water content and different anodizing time conditions were used as photoanodes. The results show that DSSC has best photovoltaic performance when the water content is 2 vol%. With the increase of oxidation time, Jsc increases continuously, open voltage (Voc) and fill factor (FF) increase first and then decrease. The best optoelectronic properties obtained that the short circuit current, open circuit voltage, fill factor and photoelectric conversion efficiency as following, Jsc = 5.2 mA/cm2, Voc = 0.7 V, FF = 0.54, η = 1.96% respectively.

Effects of the Structure of TiO2 Nanotube Arrays on Its Catalytic Activity for Microbial Fuel Cell.

To enhance the microbial fuel cell (MFC) for wastewater treatment and chemical oxygen demand degradation, TiO2 nanotubes arrays (TNA) are successfully synthesized on Ti foil substrate by the anodization process in HF and NH4F solution, respectively (hereafter, denoted as TNA‐HF and TNA‐NF). The differences between the two kinds of TNA are revealed based on their morphologies and spectroscopic characterizations. It should be highlighted that 3D TNA‐NF with an appropriate dimension can make a positive contribution to the high photocatalytic activity. In comparison with the TNA‐HF, the 3D TNA‐NF sample exhibits a significant enhancement in current generation as the MFC anode. In particular, the TNA‐NF performs nearly 1.23 times higher than the TNA‐HF, and near twofold higher than the carbon felt. It is found that the two kinds of TiO2‐based anodes have different conductivities and corrosion potentials, which are responsible for the difference in their current generation performances. Based on the experimental results, excellent stability, reliability, and low cost, TNA‐NF can be considered a promising and scalable MFC bioanode material.

Preparation of Well-Aligned TiO₂ Nanotubes with High Length-Diameter Aspect Ratio by Anodic Oxidation Method.

This paper focused on the influence of various oxidation parameters such as electrolyte composition, reaction time, calcination temperature and current change on the morphology and structure of TiO2 nanotube arrays. It was found that ammonium fluoride with a high viscosity reduced the diffusion rate of fluoride ions and significantly increased the length of TiO2 nanotubes, creating nanotubes with ordered arrays and uniform diameters. Meanwhile, the time of anodic oxidation determined the length of TiO2 nanotube arrays. Well-aligned nanotube arrays could be obtained after 0.5-2.5 h of oxidation. In addition, when the oxidation temperature was about 30 °C, the TiO2 nanotube arrays achieved the optimal uniformity and the maximum length-diameter aspect ratio. The morphology and quality of the TiO2 nanotubes fabricated were estimated through current as a function of reaction time. Consequently, formation mechanism of TiO2 nanotube arrays was investigated undergoing three major periods. The findings of this study can shed some light on the optimal conditions for preparing well-aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays with high length-diameter aspect ratio.

Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activity of N-Doped TiO2Nanotube Arrays on Acephate Degradation

Highly ordered nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide (N-doped TiO2) nanotube arrays were prepared by anodic oxidation method and then annealed in a N2atmosphere to obtain N-doped TiO2nanotube arrays. The samples were characterized with scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), and UV-visible spectrophotometry (UV-vis) spectrum. Degradation of the insecticide acephate under the visible light was used as a model to examine the visible-light photocatalytic activity of N-doped TiO2nanotube arrays. The results show that N type doping has no notable effects on the morphology and structure of TiO2nanotube arrays. After N type doping, the N replaces a small amount of O in TiO2, forming an N–Ti–O structure. This shifts the optical absorption edge and enhances absorption of the visible light. N-doped TiO2nanotube arrays subjected to annealing at 500°C in N2atmosphere show the strongest photocatalytic activity and reach a degradation rate of 84% within 2 h.

TiO2-Nanotube-Based Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Containing Fluorescent Material

We fabricated a dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) with TiO2 nanotube arrays obtained by anodization of Ti foil. Vertical structure of TiO2 nanotube arrays is very attractive due to a high electron transfer from dye to electrode. To improve the power conversion efficiency, fluorescent material, F-6377, was applied in TiO2-nanotube-based DSCs to use a light spectrum efficiently. Fluorescent material was absorbed the different wavelength of 460 nm from the light absorbed by N719 dye. Fluorescent material to emit the absorbed light energy provided an additional light for dye in DSCs and additional electrons was generated. Thickness of TiO2 nanotube arrays grown by anodic oxidation was 15 microm. N719 dye and 13(-)/l(-) electrolyte were used to fabricate the DSCs. The short circuit current densities (J(sc)) and the power conversion efficiency in DSCs with fluorescent were 10.8 mA/cm2 and 2.48%, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was observed to understand an electron transfer and life time.

Well-ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) were fabricated by electrochemical anodization in a mixed organic electrolyte consisting of ethylene glycol and glycerol. The morphology, structure, crystalline phase, and photocatalytic properties of TNAs were characterized by using TEM, SEM, XRD and photodegradation of methylene blue. It was found that the morphology and structure of TNAs could be significantly influenced by the anodization time and applied voltage. The obtained tube length was found to be proportional to anodization time, and the calculated growth rate of nanotubes was 0.6 mm/h. The microstructure analysis demonstrated that the diameter and thickness of the nanotubes increased with the increase of anodization voltage. The growth mechanism of TNAs was also proposed according to the observed relationship between current density and time during anodization. As expected, the obtained TNAs showed a higher photocatalytic activity than the commercial TiO2 P25 nanoparticles.

Effects of Synthesis Parameters on Controllable Growth of Highly-Ordered TiO<sub>2</sub> Nanotube Arrays

Titania nanotube arrays were fabricated in deionize water and glycerol mixed electrolyte containing a certain amount of NH4F. Three different polishing methods were used for pretreatment of Ti substrates: polished by hand with abrasive paper, by polishing machine, or by chemical polishing fluid (HF:HNO3=1:4, in volumetric ratio). The morphology of three different samples were imaged by scanning electron microscopy, and their photoelectrical properties were studied as well. Experimental results showed that Titania nanotube arrays grown on the Ti substrate and polished by polishing fluid has highly-ordered and well-defined nanotube structure. The effects of anodization potential and duration on synthesis of highly-ordered TiO2nanotubes were also studied in this paper. Both the layer thickness and nanotube diameter linearly increase with the increasing potential. The layer thickness also increases with prolongation of anodization time. By optimizing the preparation conditions, we can successfully control the geometrical structure of TiO2nanotube arrays with diameters in the range between 50 and 200 nm and the layer thickness between 800 and 2000 nm.

Electronic structure of TiO2 nanotube arrays from X-ray absorption near edge structure studies

We report an X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) investigation of several TiO2nanotube arrays, including the as-prepared nanotube arrays from electrochemical anodic oxidation of Ti foil (as-prepared ATNTA), as-prepared nanotube arrays after annealing at 580 °C (annealed ATNTA) and annealed ATNTA after electrochemical intercalation with Li (Li-intercalated ATNTA). XANES at the O K-edge and Ti L3,2 and K edges shows distinctly different spectral features for the as-prepared and the annealed ATNTA, characteristic of amorphous and anatase structures, respectively. Intercalation of Li into annealed ATNTA induces a surprising, yet spectroscopically unmistakable, anatase to rutile transition. XANES at the Li K-edge clearly shows ionic features of Li in ATNTA. The charge relocation from Ti 3d to O 2p at the conduction band in TiO2 was also observed when Li ions were intercalated into annealed ATNTA albeit no noticeable reduction of Ti4+ to Ti 3+ was observed. The O K-edge shows a distinctly enhanced feature in the multiple scattering regime, indicating a close to linear O–Li–O arrangement in Li-intercalated ATNTA. These results show bonding changes between Ti and O resulting from the interaction of Li ions in the TiO2 lattices. Such bonding variation has also been supported by X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL), which suggests Li+-defect interactions. The implications of these results are discussed.
