Analysis of the Convergence of Manufacturing Industry Structure in the Three Provinces of Northeast China

At present, China's economic development is in an important stage of transformation towards high-quality development. Realizing industrial structure adjustment, promoting rational regional industrial layout, and collaborative division of labor play an important role in promoting high-quality economic development. Therefore, conducting research on the convergence of regional industrial structure is of great practical significance for promoting sustainable economic development. This article takes the manufacturing industry in the three northeastern provinces as the research object, and analyzes the problem of industrial structure convergence in the manufacturing industry from multiple perspectives. By measuring the similarity coefficient of industrial structure, location entropy, and regional division of labor index, it was found that the manufacturing industry in the three northeastern provinces of China has intensified industrial homogeneity while the convergence of industrial structure is not obvious. Policy suggestions are proposed to address this phenomenon.

Research on the Upgrading of Manufacturing Industry Structure in Emerging Countries under the Background of Climate Change: An International Comparison Perspective

Climate change has consistently commanded a central and pressing role in the development of countries and worldwide. The industrial structure upgrading of the manufacturing industry in emerging countries has gained significant attention due to its implications for economic growth and climate change. Through case studies and comparative analysis, this paper aims to thoroughly analyze and compare the industrial structure upgrading procedures between developed and developing countries, focusing on addressing climate change and reducing carbon emissions. The principal barriers encompass limitations in accessing advanced technologies due to insufficient research and development (R&D) investment, unreasonable energy consumption structure, infrastructural constraints and incoherent policy frameworks. The study proffers strategic imperatives to bridge the chasm between developed and developing countries. These encompass prioritizing targeted initiatives and augmenting R&D investments for innovation and technology acclimatization, countering infrastructure bottlenecks with substantial investments in energy and transportation networks, and fortifying policy frameworks to harmonize economic growth aspirations with sustainability objectives. By enhancing the understanding of how industrial structure upgrading can support climate change mitigation and sustainable development in developing nations, this study provides valuable advice for future policymaking and government actions.

The determinants of hidden champion enterprises: Evidence from China

Upgrading China's manufacturing industry structure and attaining high-quality development requires promoting the specialized and innovative development of SMEs and developing ``Hidden champion'' businesses in specific fields. This study analyzes the development characteristics of 58 Chinese ``Hidden champion'' enterprises using fuzzy set qualitative comparison analysis and the TOE (technology, organization, environment) theoretical framework. The results provide four growth models of Chinese 'hidden champions', illustrating how numerous factors affect their success. This helps restructure and upgrade SMEs.

Behind the ‘creative destruction’ of human diets: an analysis of the structure and dynamics of the ultra-processed food manufacturing industry and implications for public health

Abstract Background The role of ultra-processed food (UPF) manufacturers in driving unhealthy diets is coming under increasing scrutiny. While many of the strategies used by UPF corporations to push for and maintain high levels of UPF consumption are well documented, there has been limited analysis of how the UPF industry has evolved over time. This study aimed to examine trends in the structure and dynamics of the UPF manufacturing industry as part of efforts to understand and address the political economic drivers of the global UPF dietary transition. Methods We used multiple methods to examine the structure and market dynamics of the UPF industry, according to an adopted structure-conduct-performance model. Quantitative methods were used to analyse diverse metrics (e.g., industry size, market concentration, profitability). Data were sourced from several business and market research databases, with periods of analysis based on available data. We conducted a narrative literature review to supplement findings from the quantitative analysis, including on corporate strategy. Results Our findings show that, since the late-1800s, the global UPF manufacturing industry has been instrumental in transforming food systems around the world to the extent that many are now heavily geared towards the consumption and production of UPFs. A key explanatory factor behind this trend is that a group of major UPF corporations have developed an extensive and highly profitable network of large, concentrated UPF markets. Our study also suggests that, since the 1980s, the same corporations have been increasingly prioritising the financial interests of their shareholders above other concerns. Conclusions Reversing the UPF dietary transition will likely require substantial changes to the structural and regulatory conditions under which food systems around the world operate, such that population and planetary health are actively promoted and incentivised. Research on the Impact of Environmental Regulation on the Upgrading of Manufacturing Industry Structure in the Yangtze River Economic Belt

It is of great practical significance to explore the environmental regulation on the upgrading of the manufacturing industry structure in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. This paper covers the panel data of 11 provinces in the Yangtze River Economic Belt during the period of 2011-2022 and applies the fixed effect model to explore the impact of environmental regulation on the upgrading of the manufacturing industry structure in the Yangtze River Economic Belt in the form of empirical research. The results reveal that environmental regulations have a negative impact on the upgrading of the manufacturing industry structure in the Yangtze River Economic Belt; green technology innovation has a mediating effect between environmental regulations and the upgrading of the manufacturing industry structure in the Yangtze River Economic Belt; and there is regional heterogeneity in the upgrading of the manufacturing industry structure in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, with the strongest inhibition in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the second in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the weakest in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Conclusions are drawn: tax relief policies should be provided appropriately; the Yangtze River Economic Belt should adopt differentiated regional environmental regulation policies to adapt to the environmental characteristics of each place, and the promotion of green technological innovation should be strengthened at the same time.

Analysis on technical structure and competitiveness of ICT manufacturing industries

In order to analyze the technical structure and international comparative advantage of the information and communication technology (ICT) manufacturing industry, a complete set of ICT manufacturing product categories has been constructed by matching National Economical Industry Classification (GB/T4754-2017) with Harmonized System (HS) Codes, based on the relevant definitions in International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC). The proposed definition overcomes inherent defects such as inaccurate scopes, lagging data and rough categories, which are characterized by commonly utilized product-level based classification approaches. Within the given framework, this paper has designed the technology content related indicators from the perspective of production distribution, and divided ICT product categories into high-end, medium-end and low-end manufacturing classifications according to respective global shares. Then, we have calculated international market shares (IMS), revealed comparative advantages (RCA), and market penetration rates (MPR) of ICT manufacturing exports for major economies from 2010 to 2021. Finally, development characterizations of ICT manufacturing industries for China's Mainland are analyzed, and several practical suggestions are provided.

Has China's OFDI promoted the upgrading of manufacturing structure-- Research based on interprovincial panel model

With the take off of the Chinese economy, more and more enterprises are investing resources in OFDI, and OFDI and its related economic factors have also had a certain impact on the upgrading of the manufacturing industry. This article studies panel models of 31 provinces in China from 2014 to 2019 using relevant data sources such as the National Bureau of Statistics and the Guotai An Database, and explores the impact of OFDI and its related economic factors on the manufacturing structure. Research has found that OFDI and international trade factors can significantly inhibit the upgrading of manufacturing structure; The per capita income level will have a positive impact on the upgrading of the manufacturing industry structure; The impact of FDI and government fiscal expenditure on the upgrading of manufacturing structure is not significant. In view of the above research results, this paper suggests that the government should adopt appropriate policies to guide OFDI in the manufacturing industry, encourage it to focus on technology intensive or capital intensive industry, and avoid its negative impact leading to "hollowing out" of the manufacturing industry; Enterprises should also optimize their business structure, relocate unnecessary or outdated businesses, invest their main resources in local businesses, and focus on technological upgrades to avoid the adverse effects of OFDI.

Development trends of machine-building enterprises in Kazakhstan as a participant of the EAEU

The purpose of the study is to determine the features of the development of mechanical engineering, which were formed in a short historical period. Mechanical engineering is a key industry sector that is able to ensure stable and constant innovative development of enterprises. According to experts of the Union of Machine Builders of Kazakhstan, the share of mechanical engineering in the structure of the country's manufacturing industry is 14%, in the share of the entire industry – 7%. The current stage of development of the engineering industry requires renewal and innovation. The article deals with the issues of production, sales and after-sales service of equipment during the implementation of the industrialization program in the engineering industry. The decrease in the prospects for the development of engineering enterprises is interconnected with a lack of investment, depreciation of funds, the level of competition in domestic and world markets, and a shortage of qualified personnel. The main attention is paid to identifying the features of the development of the machine-building complex and pursuing a balanced policy both on the territory of the country and on the territory of the EAEU member countries. The author focuses on the fact that the economic growth of Kazakhstan is accompanied by structural changes that reproduce the level of industrial and scientific and technological development of the country. The novelty of the study lies in the review of the activities of enterprises, identifying the features and causes hindering the development of mechanical engineering. The result of the study was the substantiation of the logic of strengthening key industries and facilitating the launch of basic courses for the development of the indus.

The Influence of Industrial Structure Upgrade on Coupling and Coordinated Development-Empirical Analysis From Chinese Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Pharmaceutical Service Industries.

The degree of coupling and coordination between the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry and the medical service industry crucially requires improvement by promoting the development of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry through industrial structure upgrading to narrow the gap between them. First, this article uses the coupling coordination degree model to measure the coupling coordination degree of the Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturing industry and medical service industry; then, it theoretically analyzes the mechanism through which upgrading the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry's industrial structure can improve the coupling coordination degree. Finally, we empirically test the impact of upgrading the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry's industrial structure on the coupling and coordination degree between it and the medical service industry. The main conclusions are as follows: (1). The quantile regression model shows that having an advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing industry positively affects its coupling and coordination with the medical service industry; (2). A threshold regression model is tested, and it is found that only when the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry reaches an advanced level can it significantly promote joint and coordinated development with the medical service industry; (3). Rationalizing the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry structure will inhibit a high level of coordination between it and the medical service industry and their coordinated development.

Tax Incentives for Supporting Competitiveness of Telecommunication Manufacturers

The article is dedicated to the analysis of cost factors, primarily tax burden, that can explain the observable price difference on Russian market between domestic telecommunication equipment and imports from China and USA. The relevance of the research is justified by critical significance of this market for economic, information and technological security of Russian Federation in a changed geopolitical environment. The present methods of tax burden calculation analyzed in the article reveal the subindustry level measurement to be the least studied. Based on data on 42 companies for 2015-2017, the cost structure of telecommunication equipment manufacturing industry is studied, a model for computing the tax burden rate on domestic enterprises using imported components is built. The model is adjusted for cross-country comparison to reflect the specifics of countries’ tax systems. The calculations are based on the assumption of equal production costs in the three countries under examination.A comparative analysis has shown that the tax burden in Russia is on average higher than in USA (almost 3 percentage points) and in China for enterprises operating in preferential economic zones (about 2 percentage points). However, this difference in tax burden rate does not explain the observed price discrepancy on the domestic market (up to 21 percent). Cost of components and cost of debt are additionally examined as the factors elucidating divergence of economic conditions. An approximate assessment of their influence has shown that the effect of reducing average costs with an increase in output of components, which is especially characteristic of China, has the largest impact. For American importers the tax burden level and high-end offer are the main competitive advantages. A number of tariff regulation measures allowing to compensate for the price discrepancy on the domestic market are proposed for innovation policy to stimulate the technological development of national producers.

This paper analyzes the integration level of regional manufacturing industry by measuring the similarity coefficient of manufacturing industry structure and regional division index between Jinan, the capital city of Shandong province, and other cities in the region from 2012 to 2017. From 2012 to 2017, the similarity coefficient of industrial structure of Shandong capital city cluster is declining; the regional division index is rising; and the industrial transformation of Jinan in the region has made remarkable progress, which is conducive to the continuous improvement of regional integration level.

Analysis on the Evolution Characteristics of China’s Manufacturing Industry Structure——Based on the Perspective of Global Value Chain

As the largest developing country, China has been the world’s leading manufacturing country for eight consecutive years.However, with the deepening of the academic research on the competitiveness of manufacturing industry and the development of global value chain, the views on whether China’s manufacturing industry is in the “low-locked” in the global value chain are different, mainly due to the differences in the measurement and evaluation methods of competitiveness.By constructing the global value chain index, this paper examines the global value chain potential and its changes in China from the perspective of macro industry, and provides a reference for the research model of the embedded potential and governance model selection in the global value chain of Chinese manufacturing industry.

The Emergence of Manufacturing Industry in Nigeria (1955-1978)

In this study, the origins and development of the manufacturing sector in Nigeria is surveyed. The article has demonstrated that international capital initiated, and subsequently sustained the drive towards industrialisation in Nigeria. The state and local capital have also played an increasingly important role in the process. This study is also concerned with an analysis of relative share of the manufacturing sector in GDP in the Nigerian manufacturing sector. Its purpose is to clarify the underlying forces behind Nigerian industrialisation, the percentage distribution of some key industries of performance of the manufacturing sector among its sectors. This article further discussed the emergence of Nigerian industrialisation process. It shows that the manufacturing industry effectively started from about 1955, with multinational firms, formerly engaged in wholesale and retail trade, moving into manufacturing. The structure of the manufacturing industry thereafter showed the predominance of light consumer goods production. The capital goods sector, though quite small, expanded somewhat. The primary driving force for Nigerian industrialisation was international capital. The purpose for investment in the Nigerian manufacturing industry by international capital was to utilise the country’s human and material resources to produce for profit. This was especially important because of the decline in the rate of profitability, a rise in wage rates, and the increasing excess liquidity in the developed capitalist countries. Another reason for investments was market protection. The main force behind the Nigerian industrialisation drive was the government and the demands of indigenous Nigerian businessmen as well as international capital that provided the motive force. The various strands of these arguments have been studied, using data on the historical evolution of Nigerian industrial development so as to pinpoint its source. The overall importance of this issue would be to impute the motives, and, subsequently, to explain the structure of Nigerian industrialisation and the consequences of this structure on the development of the Nigerian economy. The manufacturing sector is the driving strength behind socio-economic development of all societies the world over.

The Impact of Financial Development on Manufacturing Structural Upgrading: Quantity or Quality

Financial development plays a promotive role in improving capital allocation effect of industrial sectors, promoting new industrial technologies and choosing leading industries. Studying the relationship between financial development and structural upgrading of the manufacturing industry in the transition period of “high-quality development of manufacturing industry in China” is meaningful and important. To achieve high-quality development, we must simultaneously improve the efficiency of capital allocation and technological innovation, both of which need the support and the promotion of financial development. This paper systematically analyzes the impact mechanism of financial development on the upgrading of manufacturing industry structure. Based on the panel data of 121 cities with active industries in China from 2006 to 2018, the impact of financial development on the upgrading of manufacturing industry structure is studied from three aspects: financial scale, financial efficiency and financial agglomeration degree. The empirical results show that there is a positive correlation between financial efficiency and structural upgrading of manufacturing industry, and a negative correlation between financial scale or financial agglomeration and structural upgrading. Further analysis shows that financial development has an effect on manufacturing industry structural upgrading effectively. However, this effect is mainly driven by the development of “quality” of the financial industry, while the development of “quantity” plays a reverse inhibitory role.

Exploration on the indirect economic effects of foreign direct investment

Based on manufacturing industry panel data from 1999 to 2013, this paper studies the indirect economic effects of FDI from two angles of the upgrading of industrial structure and the structure upgrading of industrial. We also test the endogenous problems by using the method of instrumental variable. The results show that: the inflow of FDI promotes the transfer of manufacturing industry from the labor–intensive industries to the resource–intensive industries and improves the overall level of manufacturing industry structure; The inflow of FDI has a significant role in promoting the structure upgrading of industrial.

Influence of Economic Structure Optimization on Water Consumption in Shanxi, China

Shanxi province of China is threatened by the water shortage crisis. It is an important means to solve the water shortage problem by rationally water utilization planning and controlling. Using the structural decomposition analysis based on input-output table, the driving factors and driving forces of water consumption in Shanxi is researched, especially the effect of economic structure optimization. On the basis of the input-output table of Shanxi in 2002, 2007 and 2012, a comparable price water input-output model was established in combination with the water use data. According to the study, the improvement of water use efficiency has been the main driving force for reducing water consumption. The change in gross final demand has always been the main driving force for increasing water consumption. The adjustment of manufacturing industry structure, the secondary industry structure, the three industrial structure and the final demand structure have different impacts on water consumption, which has been related to the way of development. On the whole, the optimization of economic structure is changed from water reduction effect to increasing effect.

Technological Change, Skill Supply and Wage Distribution: Comparison of High-Technology and Low-Technology Industries in India

The technological inflows on the one hand and the increase in skill supply on the other have influenced not only the production structure of Indian manufacturing industries, but also the distribution of wages among the skilled and unskilled workers. The present study examines the wage disparity scenario in high-technology and low-technology industries in India. With the help of industry-level panel data from 2000–2001 to 2015–2016, the study finds the important role of skill intensity in determining wage disparity between and within the groups of skilled and unskilled workers. Skill has greater concentration in high-technology industries. Wage disparity between the skilled and unskilled workers and also within the skilled workers is high in high-technology industries as compared to low-technology industries. Skill intensity increases wage disparity in the beginning, but later on due to trickle-down effect, the trend is reversed. The study suggests that enhancement of skills through expansion of higher education and training will improve both the observed and unobserved abilities. This will increase productivity on the one hand and decrease wage disparity on the other. There is also a concern for the promotion of research and development activities to develop skill further.

Demonopolization or Decompetition of Manufacturing Industries in Iran

The vast bodies of studies in the word and recently in Iran have attempted to investigate the manufacturing industry structure (indicating the level of industries in terms of monopoly or competitiveness) and its trend using the various indices and methods. Despite the importance of Lorenz Curve and Gini Coefficient in indicating the market structure, these methods, capabilities have been neglected in determining the structure of manufacture industries in Iran by the way. Therefore, this paper attempts to indicate the structure of main manufacturing industries in Iran (including manufacture of food and beverages, manufacture of textile and production of none-metallic minerals industry) using the mentioned methods. The results of this study indicate that in the intended three years and with respect to the employment, output amounts and value added indices, these industries have concentration ratio more than 0.6. This means that they enjoy from none competitive structure. Therefore and in terms of policy, the results indicate the necessity of more consideration of policies that focus on elimination of monopoly and encourage the more competitiveness in the industrial sector.
