Synthesis and Characterization of New Copper(II) Coordination Compounds with Methylammonium Cations

We synthesized four new copper(II) complexes with acetato and chlorido ligands and methylammonium (MA), dimethylammonium (DMA), and tetramethylammonium (TMA) counterions: (MA)4[Cu2Ac4Cl2]Cl2·2H2O (1), (DMA)2[Cu2Ac4Cl2] (2), (DMA)4[Cu2Ac4Cl2]Cl2·2H2O (3), and (TMA)5[Cu2Ac4Cl]Cl4·4H2O (4). All compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic measurements, FTIR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Complexes 1, 2, and 3 consist of a dinuclear coordination anion [Cu2(Ac)4Cl2]2− with bridging acetato ligands arranged in a paddle-wheel conformation and square-pyramidal coordination around Cu(II) atoms, while the coordination anion in compound 4 is a polymeric chain, parallel to the c axis, with Cu2(Ac)4 units connected through bridging chlorido ligands. Magnetic measurements carried out between 2 K and 300 K indicate strong antiferromagnetic interactions between Cu(II) ions. The effective magnetic moments range from 1.94 μB to 2.21 μB, exceeding the spin-only value for Cu(II) ions (μeff=1.73 μB) and suggesting significant orbital contributions to the magnetic moment. Thermogravimetric analysis of all complexes showed a multistep decomposition behavior yielding elemental copper as the final product.

A prediction of high temperature magnetic coupling in transition metal phthalocyanines.

In spintronics, a perennial goal has been the generation of organic spin-bearing semiconductor materials with magnetic ordering stable at room temperature. To this end, the class of transition metal phthalocyanines has shown much promise in fulfilling this ambition. In particular, alpha-phase cobalt (II) phthalocyanine (α-CoPc) exhibits strong antiferromagnetic exchange interactions producing a long range order up to ∼100K. However, the underlying mechanism by which this magnetic interaction proceeds is not well understood. In this report, a simple mechanism has been proposed based on the Hubbard Hamiltonian, which elucidates the exchange coupling in α-CoPc. The mechanism provides stipulations for increasing the magnetic coupling, and this directs to a proposal that substitution of the central cobalt ion for rhodium will lead to a significant increase in coupling strength. The strength of this exchange interaction has been evaluated using broken symmetry hybrid exchange density functional theory and indicates that the novel rhodium (II) phthalocyanine system is indeed predicted to exhibit significantly stronger magnetic ordering. This study, therefore, identifies the coupling mechanism in α-CoPc as primarily attributable to kinetic exchange, explains its previously reported strong coupling relative to its first-row transition metal counterparts, and suggests that rhodium (II) phthalocyanine is likely to exhibit stable magnetic ordering at room temperature.

Perovskite-Like Carbodiimides AB(NCN)3: Synthesis and Characterization of MnHf(NCN)3 and FeHf(NCN)3.

Two novel ternary air-stable transition-metal carbodiimides, MnHf(NCN)3 and FeHf(NCN)3, were synthesized via solid-state metathesis using either ZnNCN or Na2NCN as the carbodiimide source and the corresponding binary metal chlorides. These two phases are the first examples of transition-metal carbodiimides with an AB(NCN)3 composition, akin to ubiquitous ABO3 perovskite oxides. The crystal structure of MnHf(NCN)3 was determined and refined from powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data in the non-centrosymmetric space group P6322 allowing for chirality, the assignment of which is supported by second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements. FeHf(NCN)3 was found to crystallize isotypically, and the presence of iron(II) in a high spin state was confirmed by 57Fe Mößbauer spectroscopy. The structures are revealed to be NiAs-derived and can be described as a hexagonal stack of NCN2- anions with metal cations occupying 2/3 of the octahedral voids. Both IR spectroscopic measurements and DFT calculations agree that the NCN2- unit is a bent carbodiimide with C2v symmetry, necessary to account for the size difference present in such a vacancy-ordered structure. Magnetic studies reveal predominantly strong antiferromagnetic interactions but no long-range order between the paramagnetic Mn2+ centers, likely due to the dilution of Mn2+ over the octahedral sites or perhaps even due to some degree of magnetic frustration. The optical and electrochemical properties of MnHf(NCN)3 were then studied, revealing a wide band gap of 3.04 eV and p-type behavior.

Crafting copper complexes of variable nuclearity and coordination geometry through solvent tailoring: Unveiling novel structure, magnetic insight and computational marvels

The solvent tuning technique has been employed to synthesize two new copper complexes [Cu3(L)(NO3)2(DMSO)4] (1) and [Cu6(L)2(NO3)2(DMF)4(H2O)2(µ-HCOO)2] (2) which display variable nuclearity and coordination geometries. The synthesized complexes further characterized by using spectroscopic, single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. Supramolecular assembly of the complexes in the solid state is stabilized by a range of intermolecular interactions including O-H⋅⋅⋅O, C-H⋅⋅⋅O, π⋅⋅⋅π and C-H⋅⋅⋅π. Magnetic susceptibility measurements (χT vs T curves) over a wide range of temperature indicate dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between the Cu(II) centres in both complexes, while DFT calculations reveal the nature and amplitude of the main magnetic interactions. Theoretical study further shows strong antiferromagnetic interactions inside the trimeric units of both complexes as well as both weak ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions among the trimers. The so-obtained J values have been employed to fit the χT vs T curves, using simplified spin models which correctly reproduce the main features of the experimental curves. Thus, this combined experimental and theoretical study provides insight into the magnetic structure of the copper complexes.

Self-Assembled Tetranuclear Square Complex of Chromium(III) Bridged by Radical Pyrazine: A Molecular Model for Metal-Organic Magnets.

The attractive electronic properties of metal-pyrazine materials─electrical conductivity, magnetic order, and strong magnetic coupling─can be tuned in a wide range depending on the metal employed, as well as its ligand-imposed redox environment. Using solvent-directed synthesis to control the dimensionality of such systems, a discrete tetranuclear chromium(III) complex, exhibiting a rare example of bridging radical pyrazine, has been prepared from chromium(II) triflate and neutral pyrazine. The strong antiferromagnetic interaction between CrIII (S = 3/2) and radical pyrazine (S = 1/2) spins, theoretically estimated at about -932 K, leads to a thermally isolated ST = 4 ground state, which remains the only populated state observable even at room temperature.

Manipulating and investigating the room-temperature magnetic memory phenomenon: The impact of rare-earth ion doping on nickel oxide nanoparticles

This study investigates the relationship between point defect density and magnetic properties in nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles (NPs). Specifically, we explore the effects of 0.5 % trivalent rare-earth ion (RE3+: Ce3+, Pr3+, Nd3+, Sm3+, and Dy3+) doping on NiO NPs, considering the influence of RE3+ ionic radius on structural modulation and magnetic properties. Our findings reveal important trends: increased microstrain (0.08 %–0.17 %) and decreased crystalline size (36–17 nm) with increasing ionic radius (r = 0.91 to 1.01 Å), along with a preference for growth along the (1 1 1) plane over (2 0 0). Additionally, multivalent point defects increase with the increase of ionic radius. Substituting Ni2+ site with RE3+ ion promotes nearest-neighbor weak ferromagnetic interaction over next-nearest-neighbor strong antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction. This leads to a redshift of two magnons (2 M) frequency by 50 cm−1 and enhanced room temperature (RT) magnetization (0.23–0.43 emu/g) with increasing ionic radius. Ce-doped NiO (r = 1.01 Å) shows the smallest crystalline size (17 nm), maximum 2 M redshift, and enhanced RT magnetization (0.43 emu/g) based on interacting bound magnetic polaron model. Ce-, Pr-, Nd-, and Sm-doped NiO NPs exhibit RT magnetic memory effects, while Dy-doped NiO NPs (r = 0.912 Å) display AF properties. Our analysis provides valuable insights for designing RT magnetic memory materials with tailored properties through suitable RE3+ ion substitutions.

Interpenetrated Lattices of Quaternary Chalcogenides Displaying Magnetic Frustration, High Na-Ion Conductivity, and Cation Redox in Na-Ion Batteries.

A series of quaternary selenides, NaxMGaSe4 (M = Mn, Fe, and mixed Zn/Fe), have been synthesized for the first time employing a high-temperature solid-state synthesis route through stochiometric or polychalcogenide flux reactions. Along with the selenides, a previously reported sulfide analogue, NaxFeGaS4, is also revisited with new findings. These compounds form an interpenetrated structure made up of a supertetrahedral unit. The electrochemical evaluations exhibit a reversible (de)intercalation of ∼0.6 and ∼0.45 Na-ions, respectively, from Na2.87FeGaS4 (1a) and Na2.5FeGaSe4 (2) involving Fe2+/Fe3+ redox when cycled between 1.5 and 2.5 V. Mössbauer spectroscopy of 1a shows the existence of a mixed oxidation state of Fe2+/3+ in the pristine compound and reversible oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ during the electrochemical cycles. Na2.79Zn0.6Fe0.4GaSe4 possesses a reasonably high room temperature ionic conductivity of 0.077 ms/cm with an activation energy of 0.30 eV. The preliminary magnetic measurements show a bifurcation of FC-ZFC at 4.5 and 2.5 K, respectively, for 1a and Na3MnGaSe4 (4) arising most likely from a spin-glass like transition. The high negative values of the Weiss constants -368.15 and -308.43 K for 1a and 4, respectively, indicate strong antiferromagnetic interactions between the magnetic ions and also emphasize the presence of a high degree of magnetic frustration in these compounds.

Ba4RuMn2O10: A Noncentrosymmetric Polar Crystal Structure with Disordered Trimers.

Phase-pure polycrystalline Ba4RuMn2O10 was prepared and determined to adopt the noncentrosymmetric polar crystal structure (space group Cmc21) based on results of second harmonic generation, convergent beam electron diffraction, and Rietveld refinements using powder neutron diffraction data. The crystal structure features zigzag chains of corner-shared trimers, which contain three distorted face-sharing octahedra. The three metal sites in the trimers are occupied by disordered Ru/Mn with three different ratios: Ru1:Mn1 = 0.202(8):0.798(8), Ru2:Mn2 = 0.27(1):0.73(1), and Ru3:Mn3 = 0.40(1):0.60(1), successfully lowering the symmetry and inducing the polar crystal structure from the centrosymmetric parent compounds Ba4T3O10 (T = Mn, Ru; space group Cmca). The valence state of Ru/Mn is confirmed to be +4 according to X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Ba4RuMn2O10 is a narrow bandgap (∼0.6 eV) semiconductor exhibiting spin-glass behavior with strong magnetic frustration and antiferromagnetic interactions.

Unveiling a Family of Dimerized Quantum Magnets, Conventional Antiferromagnets, and Nonmagnets in Ternary Metal Borides.

Dimerized quantum magnets are exotic crystalline materials where Bose-Einstein condensation of magnetic excitations can happen. However, known dimerized quantum magnets are limited to only a few oxides and halides. Here, we unveil 9 dimerized quantum magnets and 11 conventional antiferromagnets in ternary metal borides MTB4 (M = Sc, Y, La, Ce, Lu, Mg, Ca, and Al; T = V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni), where T atoms are arranged in structural dimers. Quantum magnetism in these compounds is dominated by strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between Cr (Cr and Mn for M = Mg and Ca) atoms within the dimers, with much weaker interactions between the dimers. These systems are proposed to be close to a quantum critical point between a disordered singlet spin-dimer phase, with a spin gap, and the ordered conventional Néel AFM phase. They greatly enrich the materials inventory that allows investigations of the spin-gap phase. Conventional antiferromagnetism in these compounds is dominated by ferromagnetic Mn (Fe for M = Mg and Ca) interactions within the dimers. The predicted stable and nonmagnetic (NM) YFeB4 phase is synthesized and characterized, providing a scarce candidate to study Fe dimers and Fe ladders in borides. The identified quantum, conventional, and NM systems provide a platform with abundant possibilities to tune the magnetic exchange coupling by doping and study the unconventional quantum phase transition and conventional magnetic transitions. This work opens new avenues for studying novel magnetism in borides arising from spin dimers and establishes a theoretical workflow for future searches for dimerized quantum magnets in other families of materials.

Two Cd(Ⅱ)/Mn(Ⅱ) complexes based on multinuclear metal clusters for Fe(Ⅲ) and Cr(Ⅵ) fluorescence detection and magnetic properties

Two novel complexes, {[Cd3(L)2(H2O)2]·(H2O)4}n (1) and {[Mn(HL)(H2O)2]·(H2O)}n (2), which are synthesized by the reaction of 3-(2, 4-dicarboxyphenyl)-4-carboxypyridine ligand with cadmium and manganese metal ions under the solvothermal method. The complex 1 is a 3D framework based upon trinuclear [Cd3(μ2-COO)4(μ1-COO)4(N)2] SBUs, and the complex 2 is a one-dimensional metal oxygen chain based upon binuclear [Mn2(μ2-COO)2(μ1-COO)2(N)2] SBUs. The solid fluorescence analysis of complex 1 reveals that the emission peak of 451 nm when its excitation peak is 336 nm. The fluorescence detection experiments of complex 1 showed that Fe3+, Cr2O72− and CrO42− can effectively to be detected. Furthermore, their limits of detection are 1.47 × 10−3 M, 1.31 × 10−3 M and 1.25 × 10−3 M, respectively. It has good recovery properties as a potential multifunctional fluorescence sensor. Besides, the quenching mechanism of fluorescence sensing is also discussed. In addition, the magnetic studies of complex 2 show strong antiferromagnetic interactions between its neighboring Mn(II) ions.

Syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic behaviors of phenoxo-bridged manganese compounds based on tetradentate Schiff bases

Six Mn(II)/Mn(III) coordination compounds with tetradentate Schiff bases, [Mn(L1)(N3)]2 (1), [Mn(L2)(N3)]2 (2), [Mn(L1)(SCN)]2 (3), [Mn(L2)(SCN)]2[Mn(L2)(SCN)(C2H5OH)]2 (4), [Mn(L1)(CH3OH)]2 (5), and [Mn3(L2)2(CH3COO)2] (6) [H2L1 = N,N'-bis(5-chloro-salicylaidimine)-1,2-diaminop-ropane), H2L2 = N,N'-bis(5-chloro-salicylaidimine)-2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diami- ne], were structurally and magnetically characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), elemental analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurement. Structural analysis reveals that each manganese center displays a typical Jahn-Teller distortion. Compounds 1, 2, 3 and 5 are binuclear systems in which two central manganese atoms are connected by di-u2-phenoxo-bridging from two inverse tetradentate ligands. The asymmetric unit of compound 4 contains two moieties, which is composed of a dimeric unit [Mn(L1)(SCN)]2 and two monomeric units [Mn(L1)(SCN)(C2H5OH)]. Compound 6 is a linear homo-trinuclear structure. Dc variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements show that compounds 1, 2, 4 and 5 exhibit paramagnetic behaviors with J = +0.202 cm−1 for 1, J = +0.203 cm−1 for 2, J = +1.03 cm−1 for 4 and + 0.152 cm−1 for 5, respectively, whereas compounds 3 and 6 show a strong antiferromagnetic interaction between the high-spin metal centers. In addition, we investigated the relationship between the structures and magnetic behaviour.

Unique Double and Triple Decker Arrangements of Rare‐Earth 9,10‐Diborataanthracene Complexes Featuring Single‐Molecule Magnet Characteristics

AbstractHerein, we present the first report on the synthesis of rare‐earth complexes featuring a 9,10‐diborataanthracene ligand. This 14‐π‐electron ligand is highly reductive and was previously used in small‐molecule activation. Salt elimination reactions between dipotassium 9,10‐diethyl‐9,10‐diborataanthracene [K2(DEDBA)] and [LnIII(η8‐CotTIPS)(BH4)(thf)x] (CotTIPS=1,4‐(iPr3Si)2C8H6) in a 1 : 1 ratio yielded heteroleptic sandwich complexes [K(η8‐CotTIPS)LnIII(η6‐DEDBA)] (Ln=Y, Dy, Er). These compounds form Lewis‐base‐free one‐dimensional coordination polymers when crystallised from toluene. In contrast, reaction of [K2(DEDBA)] and [LnIII(η8‐CotTIPS)(BH4)(thf)x] in a 1 : 2 ratio led to the formation of heteroleptic triple‐decker complexes [(η8‐CotTIPS)LnIII(μ‐η6:η6‐DEDBA)LnIII(η8‐CotTIPS)] (Ln=Y, Dy, Er). Notably, these are not only the first lanthanide triple‐decker compounds featuring a six‐membered ring as a deck but also the first trivalent lanthanide triple‐decker featuring a heterocycle in the coordination sphere. Magnetic investigations reveal that [K(η8‐CotTIPS)LnIII(η6‐DEDBA)] (Ln=Dy, Er) and [(η8‐CotTIPS)ErIII(μ‐η6:η6‐DEDBA)ErIII(η8‐CotTIPS)] exhibit Single‐Molecule Magnet (SMM) behaviour. In the case of [(η8‐CotTIPS)LnIII(μ‐η6:η6‐DEDBA)LnIII(η8‐CotTIPS)] (Ln=Dy, Er), the introduction of a second near lanthanide ion results in strong antiferromagnetic interactions, allowing the enhancement of the magnetic characteristic of the system, compared to the quasi isolated counterpart. This research renews the overlooked coordination chemistry of the DBA ligand and expands it to encompass rare‐earth elements.

Signatures of nearly compensated magnetism and spin glass behavior in highly frustrated β-Mn-type Mn50Fe25+xAl25-x Heusler alloys.

The present study examines the effect of Fe/Al concentration on the structural and magnetic properties of Mn-rich Mn50Fe25+xAl25-x (x = 5, 10, 15) Heusler alloys through x-ray diffraction, temperature- and field-dependent DC magnetization, thermoremanent magnetization, magnetic memory effect, AC susceptibility measurements, and DFT calculations. The samples crystallize in a cubic β-Mn structure. The trend shows a reduction in lattice parameters (unit cell volume) with the increasing Fe proportion. These alloys exhibit strong antiferromagnetic interactions with large frustration parameters, indicating the presence of competing magnetic interactions. The DC magnetization data reveal spin glass-like features with a peak at spin glass freezing temperature (Tf). The observation of bifurcation in temperature-dependent zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetization curves, exponential dependence of the temperature variation of remanence and coercivity, magnetic relaxation, and magnetic memory effect below Tf support the spin-glass character of these alloys. The frequency dependence of Tf is also examined in the context of dynamic scaling laws, such as the Vogel-Fulcher law and critical slowing down model, which further supports the presence of spin glass behavior. In the theoretical DFT calculations, the electronic structure is found to be metallic and similar for both spin projections. Moreover, the antiferromagnetic arrangement of the magnetic moments, in line with the experimental observations, is stabilized by exchange interactions, resulting in an almost compensated total magnetic moment of 0.02-0.38µB/f.u. This is probably caused by the frustrated structure and non-stoichiometric compositions of Mn50Fe25+xAl25-x.

Hysteretic Room-Temperature Magnetic Bistability of the Crystalline 4,7-Difluoro-1,3,2-Benzodithiazolyl Radical.

The title radical R⋅, synthesized by reduction of the corresponding cation R+, is thermally stable up to ~380 K in the crystalline state under anaerobic conditions. With SQUID magnetometry, single-crystal and powder XRD, solid-state EPR and TG-DSC, reversible spin-Peierls transition between diamagnetic and paramagnetic states featuring ~10 K hysteretic loop is observed for R⋅ in the temperature range ~310-325 K; ΔH=~2.03 kJ mol-1 and ΔS=~6.23 J mol-1 K-1. The transition is accompanied by mechanical movement of the crystals, i. e., by thermosalient behavior. The low-temperature diamagnetic P-1 polymorph of R⋅ consists of R⋅2 π-dimers arranged in (…R⋅2…)n π-stacks; whereas the high-temperature paramagnetic P21/c polymorph, of uniform (…R⋅…)n π-stacks. With the XRD geometries, CASSCF and broken-symmetry DFT jointly suggest strong antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions within R⋅2 and weak between R⋅2 for the (…R⋅2…)n stacks; and moderate AF interactions between R⋅ for the (…R⋅…)n stacks. The fully hydrocarbon archetype of R⋅ does not reveal the aforementioned properties. Thus, the fluorinated 1,3,2-benzodithiazolyls pave a new pathway in the design and synthesis of metal-less magnetically-bistable materials.

Spin–spin interaction in a highly stable neutral diradical: σ-boned dimer of trioxotriangulene

Abstract A σ-bonded dimer of 4,8,10-trioxotriangulene (TOT) was newly synthesized and its electronic spin structure was characterized. The neutral diradical had a singlet ground state due to the strong antiferromagnetic interaction through the σ-bond. The strong intramolecular interaction within the σ-dimer caused a near-infrared photoabsorption of around 700–1,000 nm, which is close to that of the π-stacked dimer of TOT monoradical.

Cobalt(II) Paddle-Wheel Complex with 3,5-Di(tert-butyl)-4-hydroxybenzoate Bridges: DFT and ab initio Calculations, Magnetic Dilution, and Magnetic Properties

A new binuclear "paddle-wheel" complex, [Co2(bhbz)4(EtOH)2]·4EtOH (1, Hbhbz-3,5-di(tert-butyl)-4-hydroxybenzoic acid); an isostructural zinc complex (2); a and magnetically diluted sample of [Zn1.93Co0.07(bhbz)4(EtOH)2]·4EtOH (3) were obtained. Molecular structures of 1 and 2 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. DFT calculations for 1 indicate strong Co-Co antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in the binuclear fragment. It was shown that when one paramagnetic ion in the binuclear molecule is replaced by a diamagnetic zinc(II) ion, the remaining cobalt(II) ion can be considered as an isolated center with magnetic anisotropy, the parameters of which are determined by ab initio calculations. Magnetic properties for samples 1 and 3 were investigated and analyzed in detail.

Morphology dependent negative dielectric permittivity in spinel ferrite nanostructures

Metamaterials with negative dielectric permittivity has become a research hotspot due to their potential efficacy in various electromagnetic utilizations, such as, filter and antenna design, novel capacitance and inductor design, electromagnetic absorber etc. This study unfurls immense possibilities of inducing metamaterial properties such as negative dielectric permittivity in Magnesium Ferrite, a naturally occurring compound, just by restructuring the morphology. Herein, we report the correlation between structural, dielectric, and magnetic properties of the system in the same chemical composition but different morphologies, namely, nano solid spheres (NSSs) and nano hollow spheres (NHSs). Strikingly, only NHSs show negative dielectric permittivity owing to the Lorentz dielectric resonance in the vicinity of a metamagnetic transition. Further investigations show that the hollow cores and greater number of interfaces in NHSs, in comparison to NSSs, cause the uncompensated charges to accumulate within them and release at some frequencies and temperatures, leading to the backscattering of dipoles, which in turn induces the resonance. NSSs with stronger anti-ferromagnetic interaction and impermeable morphology do not show any sign of negative dielectric permittivity.

Tunable inversion degree of MnIn2S4 thiospinels prepared by high-pressure synthesis, and its implication in the optical and magnetic properties

Indium thiospinels (AIn2S4, A= transition metals) have attracted significant attention due to their potential for manipulating magnetic and optoelectronic properties through changes in chemical composition. Defined in the cubic space group Fd-3 m (No. 227), the crystal structure consists of a framework of edge-sharing InS6 octahedra (Oh symmetry), with A cations coordinated tetrahedrally (Td symmetry) to sulfur. In this study, we describe a rapid high-pressure synthetic method (3.5 GPa) to prepare MnIn2S4 polycrystalline samples, with tunable degree of inversion (λ) or Mn-In antisite, meaning that some Mn occupy the octahedral sites and some In atoms are located at the tetrahedral positions. We found that λ closely depends on the synthesis temperature. Notably, the refinement of the crystal structure from X-ray diffraction data reveals positive correlations between the inversion degree and different properties such as the band gap, expanding its spectral coverage, and the magnetic behavior, depending on the occupancy rate of the octahedral or tetrahedral sites by the strongly magnetic Mn2+ ions. Whereas the paramagnetic behavior is not affected by the inversion degree, for higher λ values (30%<λ < 38%), achieved at synthesis temperatures as high of 800ºC, the random distribution of Mn2+ ions between Td and Oh sites accounts for a spin-glass state with a clear cusp in the magnetic susceptibility (ac and dc), based on the strong short-range antiferromagnetic interactions.

Magnetic properties of an oxo-bridged dinuclear iron(III) complex resulting from the oxidation of mononuclear iron metallacycles with a flexible ethylenediphenylenebis(oxamate) ligand

Transition metal ions such as copper(II), nickel(II), cobalt(II), and manganese(II) are widely used in the formation of mono- or oligonuclear metallacyclic complexes with the flexible N,N’-2,2′-ethylenediphenylenebis(oxamate) ligand (H4edpba); however similar supramolecular complexes with iron(II) and iron(III) are rarely obtained. In this work, we synthesized for the first time a new air-stable oxo-bridged diiron(III) complex of formula {[Fe(H2edpba)(dmso)]2(μ-O)}·dmso·H2O (2) from dioxygen oxidation of the putative mononuclear iron(II) complex precursor of formula [Fe(H2edpba)(H2O)2]Cl (1) in dimethylsulfoxide (dmso). Compound 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic system and contains one oxo group bridging two cationic mononuclear metallacyclic moieties, [Fe(H2edpba)(dmso)]+. The iron(III) ions are also coordinated to four oxygen atoms from the dianionic H2edpba2− ligands in a tetradentate fashion, while an oxygen atom from the coordinated dmso molecules. Mössbauer spectroscopy confirms the presence of high-spin (HS) Fe3+ ions (2). The magnetic properties of 2 reveal a strong antiferromagnetic interaction between the two HS Fe3+ ions (J = −226.46 cm−1), in agreement with the DFT calculations (J = −207.99 cm−1).
