The many facets of RuII(dppe)2 acetylide compounds.

In this contribution, we describe the various research domains in which RuII alkynyl derivatives are involved. Their peculiar molecular properties stem from a strong and intimate overlap between the metal centered d orbitals and the p system of the acetylide ligands, resulting in plethora of fascinating properties such as strong and tunable visible light absorption with a strong MLCT character essential for sensing, photovoltaics, light-harvesting applications or non-linear optical properties. Likewise, the d/p mixing results in tunable redox properties at low potential due to the raising of the HOMO level, and making those compounds particularly suited to achieve redox switching of various properties associated to the acetylide conjugated ligand, such as photochromism, luminescence or magnetism, for charge transport at the molecular level and in field effect transistor devices, or charge storage for memory devices. Altogether, we show in this review the potential of RuII acetylide compounds, insisting on the molecular design and suggesting further research developments for this class of organometallic dyes, including supramolecular chemistry.

Novel Tl2GeX6 (X=Cl,Br) Double Perovskites for Solar Cell, Optoelectronic, and Thermoelectric Applications: A DFT Investigation

This study aims to investigate the structural, mechanical, optical, electronic, and thermoelectric properties of novel double perovskites Tl2GeCl6 and Tl2GeBr6. The Quantum Espresso code was employed to perform the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation on the perovskites’ characteristics. The results indicated that both materials exhibit chemical and structural stability, with equilibrium lattice constants of 10.08 Å and 10.55 Å for Tl2GeCl6 and Tl2GeBr6, respectively. The calculated elastic parameters and elastic moduli data also demonstrated that the new double perovskites exhibit mechanical stability while the calculated electronic band structure and the density of states using the PBE functional indicated that the materials are semiconductors with energy gap values of 0.3 eV for Tl2GeBr6 and 1.72 eV for Tl2GeCl6, respectively. Using more accurate SCAN approximation, the energy gaps were refined to 0.53 eV for Tl2GeBr6 and 2.10 eV for Tl2GeCl6. Additionally, the calculated dielectric functions, extinction coefficient and absorption coefficients of Tl2GeCl6 and Tl2GeBr6 strongly suggest the exceptional optical response of these materials. Notably, Tl2GeBr6 is estimated to have a particularly strong visible-light absorption capacity, positioning it as a promising absorber for perovskite solar cells. These findings are also supported by the low reflectivity values observed. Finally, the analysis of their thermoelectric properties revealed the excellent thermoelectric properties of Tl2GeCl6 and Tl2GeBr6, as indicated by their high figures of merit, predicted to be 0.73 and 0.68 for the respective perovskites.

Two-dimensional XYN3 (X=V, Nb, Ta; Y=Si, Ge): Promising optoelectronic materials in photovoltaic photodetectors

Two-dimensional p-type/intrinsic/n-type (p-i-n) homojunction opens up exciting opportunities for the advancement of next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, it is urgent to explore superior two-dimensional materials for p-i-n homojunction to enhance optoelectronic performance. Herein, the electronic structures, optical properties of monolayer XYN3 (X=V, Nb, Ta; Y=Si, Ge), and the related p-i-n homojunctions are constructed and investigated systematically based on the framework of density function theory and non-equilibrium Green's function calculations. The electronic structures and optical absorption of these stable monolayers reveal that they show semiconductor characteristic with indirect bandgaps of 1.23∼2.13 eV, which possess strong absorption of visible light. The simulations of the p-i-n homojunctions based on these monolayers highlight that VSiN3 and TaSiN3-based p-i-n junctions possess maximum photocurrent densities of 21.43 and 18.48 A/m2, respectively. Moreover, the photoresponses of VSiN3 and TaSiN3-based p-i-n junctions can reach up to 0.61 and 0.55 A/W, respectively, demonstrating that VSiN3 and TaSiN3-based p-i-n junctions could be the ideal candidates for optoelectronic devices. Our work is expected to pave the way for the realization of 2D p-i-n homojunction optoelectronic devices.

Enhanced photocathodic protection performance of Co3S4 nanoparticles modified porous BiVO4 composites for 304 stainless steel

A nanoporous Co3S4/BiVO4 composites were successfully fabricated via electrodeposition, immersion and oil-bath heating methods. ZIF-67 was used as a cobalt source and template. Co3S4/BiVO4obtained by treatment for 6 h displayed the best photocathodic protection (PCP) performance. Under light, Co3S4-6h/BiVO4 reduced the potential of 304 stainless steel (SS) to −490 mV vs. SCE, which was 200 mV below that of pure BiVO4. In addition, the photocurrent densities of 304 SS coupled with Co3S4-6h/BiVO4 were up to 13 μA cm−2, which was more than 4 times that of pure BiVO4. Remarkably, the Rct of 304 SS coupled with Co3S4-6h/BiVO4(142.6 Ω·cm2) was 1/27 of that of pure BiVO4 (3918 Ω·cm2). The outstanding PCP property of Co3S4/BiVO4 can be owed to the synergistic effects of strong visible light absorption, improved charge transfer efficiency, and enhanced electron storage capacity. These advantages make Co3S4/BiVO4 a promising candidate for providing effective PCP effects on metals.

Solar-driven purification: Removing pharmaceutical contaminants from water using carbon-doped NASICON photocatalyst

Pharmaceutical contaminants in water pose significant risks to aquatic ecosystems and human health. This work synthesized a novel NASICON@C composite (sodium super ionic conductor embedded with carbon) as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst for eliminating paracetamol from water. Characterization confirmed a well-dispersed composite with hexagonal morphology, surface porosity, and strong visible light absorption. The carbon phase enabled visible light harvesting while the NASICON facilitated charge transfer and redox reactions. Photocatalytic testing showed dramatic paracetamol degradation within 30 min under visible irradiation using NASICON@C. 99.7 % of the initial 100 mg L−1 paracetamol was eliminated in neutral pH conditions. The ion-conducting NASICON framework promoted efficient charge carrier separation and transfer to enable the oxidation reactions. The NASICON@C catalyst displayed excellent stability over five reuse cycles. The synergistic integration of carbon and NASICON phases in this composite photocatalyst makes it a promising and sustainable platform for visible light-driven pharmaceutical contaminant removal from water sources.

Unveiling the optoelectronic features and physical stability of novel Cs2HgPdI6: Computational insights

In recent years, researchers have been devoted to search for novel stable halide perovskite materials with outstanding photovoltaic performance. Herein, through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we uncover for the first time the crystal stability, structural parameters, optoelectronic features, and photovolatic performance of Cs2HgPdI6. The Jahn−Teller-distorted Cs2HgPdI6 is detected by its structural feature. The stability of novel Cs2HgPdI6 is completely ensured by means of the DFT calculations. Accurate electronic structure calculations show that Cs2HgPdI6 exhibits an appropriate fundamental gap (1.278 eV). This band gap is mainly determined by the interaction between the I-5p and Pd-4d orbitals. Additionally, Cs2HgPdI6 has good carrier mobility and an ultra-low exciton binding energy. Meanwhile, it also exhibits relatively weak anisotropic optical properties and strong visible-light absorption. The large theoretical conversion efficiency of 31.7 % is illustrated for Cs2HgPdI6. Overall, our research highlights the great potential of this novel compound for photovoltaic applications.

Ultrasonic spray synthesis, photoelectric properties and photovoltaic performances of chalcogenide CaSnS3

Chalcogenide perovskites are promising lead-free, stable absorber materials for solar cells. This work reports the synthesis of orthorhombic phase pure CaSnS3 thin films by facile low temperature sulfurization of solution-processed CaSnO3 oxide precursors. Structural characterization confirms complete anion exchange to produce crystalline CaSnS3 films with vertically aligned rod-like grains. Optical studies show strong visible light absorption with direct bandgap of 1.72 eV, ideal for photovoltaics. Electrical measurements indicate p-type conductivity with hole concentration of 1.2×1017 cm-3 and mobility around 8 cm2V-1s-1 at room temperature. First-principles DFT calculations corroborate the p-type electronic structure. Prototype CaSnS3 solar cells are fabricated with TiO2 electrode, demonstrating power conversion efficiency of 2.5% under AM1.5G, open-circuit voltage of 0.55 V, short circuit current density of 11.5 mA/cm2 and fill factor of 0.62. The cells also exhibit remarkable ambient shelf stability over 6 months. The comprehensive results validate the photovoltaic potential of these earth abundant, sustainable chalcogenide perovskites synthesized via scalable low-cost solution methods. Further interface engineering can enable enhanced efficiencies.

Porous polyselenoviologen with long-lived charge separated states and highly cyclic stability for heterogeneous photocatalytic reaction and hydrogen production

A highly stable heterogeneous photocatalyst, porous polyselenoviologen (POP-SeV2+), was successfully synthesized via SN2 reaction. Compared to the monomer, POP-SeV2+ exhibited strong visible-light absorption, enhanced electron acceptor property, and prolonged lifetime of radical cations. Simultaneously, the femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) illustrated that the formation of tetrahedral multi-cationic structure is conducive to the rapid generation of molecular excited states and extending the duration of charge-separated states. Due to its remarkable characteristics, the POP-SeV2+ was employed as a photocatalyst for visible-light-induced cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reactions with a highly efficient yield (82 %). Additionally, its utilization was further extended to the hydrogen generation, demonstrating remarkable outcomes such as a high rate of H2 generation (300 μmol·h−1·g−1), and an apparent quantum yield (0.13 %). Notably, POP-SeV2+ displayed great stability and reusability in the photocatalytic process, which can distinguish it from those soluble SeV2+-based photocatalysts. The catalytic efficiency of POP-SeV2+ remained virtually unaffected even after undergoing several recycling cycles, which not only achieved the complete heterogeneous photocatalysis of SeV2+-based systems for the first time but also provided a new strategy to improve the application effect of viologen derivatives in solar energy conversion and utilization.

Triangle CeO2/g-C3N4 heterojunctions: Enhanced light-driven photocatalytic degradation of methylparaben

In this work, an efficient photocatalytic system for methylparaben (MP) removal, using solar (λ > 360 nm) and visible (λ > 420 nm) light-driven CeO2/g-C3N4 (CeO2/CN) heterojunctions is reported for the first time. The physicochemical properties of pure CeO2, CN, and CeO2/CN composites were investigated using characterization techniques, such as XRD, FESEM-EDS, TEM, UV–Vis, PL, XPS, and electrochemical spectroscopy. Among the catalysts with different mass ratios of CeO2, 10 %CeO2/CN showed the best photocatalytic performance. This is attributed to the enhanced charge carrier’s separation because of the proper band-edge alignment between CN and CeO2 components, and the strong visible light absorbance. The photocatalytic degradation of MP followed the first-order kinetics, and the 10 %CeO2/CN catalyst exhibited a 3.8- and 11.3-times higher reaction rate (k) constant than that of pure CN, investigated under solar and visible light illumination, respectively. Further, scavenger trapping experiments confirmed that hydroxyl radicals (OH.) and dissolved oxygen are the predominant active species in MP oxidation over 10 %CeO2/CN composite catalyst. 1H NMR and LCMS-HPLC results and observations showed complete degradation of MP (0.1 g/L) to CO2 and H2O after 7 h of solar irradiation, due to the absence of the representative peaks of MP and its organic degradation products (e.g. phenols, benzoates).

A cyclic trinuclear silver complex for photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide.

The development of metal complexes for photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from pure water and oxygen using solar energy, especially in the absence of any additives (e.g., acid, co-catalysts, and sacrificial agents), is a worthwhile pursuit, yet still remains highly challenging. More importantly, the O2 evolution from the water oxidation reaction has been impeded by the classic bottleneck, the photon-flux-density problem of sunlight that could be attributed to rarefied solar radiation for a long time. Herein, we reported synthesis of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-based cyclic trinuclear silver complexes (Ag-CTC), and they exhibited strong visible-light absorption ability, a suitable energy bandgap, excellent photochemical properties and efficient charge separation ability. The integration of BODIPY motifs as oxygen reduction reaction sites and silver ions as water oxidation reaction sites allows Ag-CTC to photosynthesize H2O2 either from pure water or from sea water in the absence of any additives with a high H2O2 production rate of 183.7 and 192.3 μM h-1, which is higher than that of other reported metal-based photocatalysts. The photocatalytic mechanism was systematically and ambiguously investigated by various experimental analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our work represents an important breakthrough in developing a new Ag photocatalyst for the transformation of O2 into H2O2 and H2O into H2O2.

Efficient photoredox catalysis in C–C cross-coupling reactions by two-coordinated Au(I) complex

Photocatalysis provides a versatile approach to redox activation of various organic substrates for synthetic applications. To broaden the scope of photoredox catalysis, developing catalysts with strong oxidizing or reducing power in the excited state is imperative. Catalysts that feature highly cathodic oxidation potentials and long lifetimes in their excited states are particularly in demand. In this research, we demonstrate the catalytic utility of two-coordinate Au(I) complex photocatalysts that exhibit an exclusive ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LLCT) transition in C–C cross-coupling reactions between N-heterocycles and (hetero)aryl halides, including redox-resistant (hetero)aryl chlorides. Our photocatalysis system can steer reactions under visible-light irradiation at a catalyst loading as low as 0.1 mol% and exhibits a broad substrate scope with high chemo- and regioselectivity. Our mechanistic investigations provide direct spectroscopic evidence for each step in the catalysis cycle and demonstrate that the LLCT-active Au(I) complex catalysts offer several benefits, including strong visible-light absorption, a 210 ns-long excited-state lifetime without short-lived components, and a 91% yield in the production of free-radical intermediates. Given the wide structural versatility of the proposed catalysts, we envision that our research will provide useful insights into the future utilization of the LLCT-active Au(I) complex for organic transformations.

Incorporating ReS2 Nanosheet into ZnIn2S4 Nanoflower as Synergistic Z-Scheme Photocatalyst for Highly Effective and Stable Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Degradation.

Inspired by natural photosynthesis, the visible-light-driven Z-scheme system is very effective and promising for boosting photocatalytic hydrogen production and pollutant degradation. Here, a synergistic Z-scheme photocatalyst is constructed by coupling ReS2 nanosheet and ZnIn2S4 nanoflower and the experimental evidence for this direct Z-scheme heterostructure is provided by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance. Consequently, such a unique nanostructure makes this Z-scheme heterostructure exhibit 23.7 times higher photocatalytic hydrogen production than that of ZnIn2S4 nanoflower. Moreover, the ZnIn2S4/ReS2 photocatalyst is also very stable for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, almost without activity decay even storing for two weeks. Besides, this Z-scheme heterostructure also exhibits superior photocatalytic degradation rates of methylene blue (1.7 × 10-2 min-1) and mitoxantrone (4.2 × 10-3 min-1) than that of ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst. The ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, transient photocurrent spectra, open-circuit potential measurement, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveal that the superior photocatalytic performance of ZnIn2S4/ReS2 heterostructure is mostly attributed to its broad and strong visible-light absorption, effective separation of charge carrier, and improved redox ability. This work provides a promising nanostructure design of a visible-light-driven Z-scheme heterostructure to simultaneously promote photocatalytic reduction and oxidation activity.

Piezoelectric, Thermoelectric, and Photocatalytic Water Splitting Properties of Janus Arsenic Chalcohalide Monolayers.

In this study, we systematically investigate the piezoelectric, thermoelectric, and photocatalytic properties of novel two-dimensional Janus arsenic chalcohalide monolayers, AsXX' (X = S and Se and X' = Cl, Br, and I) using density functional theory. The positive phonon spectra and ab initio molecular dynamics simulation plots indicate these monolayers to be dynamically and thermally stable. The mechanical stability of these monolayers is confirmed by a nonzero elastic constant (C ij ), Young's modulus (Y 2D), and Poisson ratio (ν). These monolayers exhibit strong out-of-plane piezoelectric coefficients, making them candidate materials for piezoelectric devices. Our calculated results indicate that these monolayers have a low lattice thermal conductivity (κl) and high thermoelectric figure of merit (zT) up to 1.51 at 800 K. These monolayers have an indirect bandgap, high carrier mobility, and strong visible light absorption spectra. Furthermore, the AsSCl, AsSBr, and AsSeI monolayers exhibit appropriate band alignment for water splitting. The calculated value of the corrected solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency can reach up to 19%. The nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations reveal the prolonged electron-hole recombination rates of 1.52 0.98, and 0.67 ns for AsSCl, AsSBr, and AsSeI monolayers, respectively. Our findings demonstrate these monolayers to be potential candidates in energy-harvesting fields.

Effect of Surface Electron Trapping and Small Polaron Formation on the Photocatalytic Efficiency of Copper(I) and Copper(II) Oxides.

Cu2O, CuO, and mixed phase Cu2O/CuO represent promising candidates for photoelectrochemical H2 evolution due to their strong visible light absorption, earth-abundance, and chemical stability. However, the photoelectrochemical efficiency in these materials remains far below the theoretical limit, largely due to poorly understood surface electron dynamics. These dynamics depend on defect states, such as Cu atom vacancies and phase boundaries, which control electron trapping, charge carrier separation, and recombination. In this work, we study the photoinduced electron and hole dynamics at the surface of various Cu oxides using ultrafast extreme ultraviolet reflection-absorption (XUV-RA) spectroscopy. In Cu2O we find that photoexcitation occurs as electron promotion from primarily Cu 3d valence band to Cu 4s conduction band states compared to O 2p valence band to Cu 4s conduction band states in CuO. In catalysts with a significant concentration of Cu vacancies, we observe fast electron trapping to the Cu 3d defect band occurring in less than 100 fs. In contrast, photoexcited electrons in phase pure CuO do not trap to midgap states; rather these electrons form small polarons within approximately 500 fs. Photoelectrochemical measurements of these catalysts show that Cu vacancy-mediated electron trapping correlates with a significant loss of photocurrent. Together, these results provide a detailed picture of the defect states and associated ultrafast carrier dynamics that govern the photocatalytic efficiency in widely studied Cu2O and CuO photocatalysts.

A molecularly imprinting photoelectrochemical sensor based on Bi2O2S-sensitized perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 for sarcosine determination.

An original molecular imprinting photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor for sarcosine detection based on stable lead-free inorganic halide double perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 is proposed. Cs2AgBiBr6 as a lead-free halide perovskite material possesses severalpositive optoelectronic properties for PEC analysis, such as long-lived component to the charge-carrier lifetime, and strong absorption of visible light. At the same time, two-dimensional materials also offer excellent electronic and mechanical properties; thus, Bi2O2S was used and combined with Cs2AgBiBr6 to provide a stable and large photocurrent, which also benefits from the stability of perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6. Based on this novel PEC assay, the detection range for sarcosine was between 0.005 and 5000ng/mL with a low detection limit of 0.002ng/mL. This work also improved the adhibition of metal halide perovskite in analytical chemistry field, providing a novel way for other small molecule detection.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of ZnS@CuInxSy for photocatalytic degradation of coloured and non-coloured pollutants

Copper indium sulfide (CuInS2) exhibits strong visible light absorption and thus has the potential for good photocatalytic activity; however, rapid charge recombination limits its practical usage. An intriguing strategy to overcome this issue is to couple CuInS2 with another semiconductor to form a heterojunction, which can improve the charge carrier separation and, hence, enhance the photocatalytic activity. In this study, photocatalysts comprising CuInS2 with a secondary CuS phase (termed CuInxSy) and CuInxSy loaded with ZnS (termed ZnS@CuInxSy) were synthesized via a microwave-assisted method. Structural and morphological characterization revealed that the ZnS@CuInxSy photocatalyst comprised tetragonal CuInS2 containing a secondary phase of hexagonal CuS, coupled with hexagonal ZnS. The effective band gap energy of CuInxSy was widened from 2.23 to 2.71 as the ZnS loading increased from 0 to 30%. The coupling of CuInxSy with ZnS leads to long-lived charge carriers and efficient visible-light harvesting properties, which in turn lead to a remarkably high activity for the photocatalytic degradation of brilliant green (95.6% in 5 h) and conversion of 4-nitrophenol to 4-nitrophenolate ions (95.4% in 5 h). The active species involved in these photocatalytic processes were evaluated using suitable trapping agents. Based on the obtained results, photocatalytic mechanisms are proposed that emphasize the importance of h+, O2•–, and OH− in photocatalytic processes using ZnS@CuInxSy.

Theoretical study of lead-free mixed-valence mixed-halide Au-based perovskites for optoelectronics

Inorganic mixed-valence Au-based perovskites have received considerable attention due to their nontoxic elements, good stability and superior properties. Hence it is of significant interest to explore more novel Au-based perovskite materials for solar cell applications. This study presents a detailed theoretical exploration on the structural features, thermodynamic and mechanical stability, optoelectronic characteristics, and photovoltaic performance of Cs2AuIAuIIICl6-xBrx, Cs2AuIAuIIICl6-xIx, and Cs2AuIAuIIIBr6-xIx (x = 2, 4) in comparison with that of Cs2AuIAuIIIX6 (X = Cl, Br, I). Through the comprehensive evaluation of thermodynamic and mechanical stability, Cs2AuIAuIIIX2Y4 (X2Y4Cl2Br4, Cl2I4, and Br2I4) is identified to be stable. The impact of anion substitution on the electronic characteristics of these mixed-halide Au-based perovskites is thoroughly disclosed. It is observed from band structure calculations that Cs2AuIAuIIIX4Y2 (X4Y2Cl4Br2, Cl4I2, and Br4I2) exhibits a lower direct-gap within 0.7–1.0 eV, while Cs2AuIAuIIIX2Y4 (X2Y4Cl2Br4, Cl2I4, and Br2I4) possesses an indirect-gap with ∼1.1 eV. The nonlinear band gap variation is disclosed and reasonably explained. Furthermore, Cs2AuIAuIIIX2Y4 displays strong dipole-allowed visible-light absorption. In addition, the simulated efficiency of Cs2AuIAuIIIX2Y4 is within ∼28–30 %, which is comparable to those of GaAs and CH3NH3PbI3. This theoretical exploration is helpful for developing more novel inorganic Au-based perovskites with desirable photovoltaic performance.

Stearic acid-coated plasmonic Ag nanoparticles as a dual catalyst for enhanced NiO chemo and photo catalysis

The phenomenon of Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) in plasmonic metal nanoparticles causes a strong absorption of visible light and leads to the generation of hot electrons on the surface and the creation of localized electromagnetic fields near the surface. This characteristic enhances the catalytic performance of a plasmonic metal Ag–NiO nanocomposite (NiO-SNP) when exposed to low-flux visible light irradiation. The NiO-SNP was synthesized using a simple and cost-effective ultrasonication method. Its structural, morphological, and optical properties were analyzed, confirming the formation of nanocomposites. The proximity of stearic acid-coated Ag nanoparticles (SNP) acts as visible light-harvesting antennas, promoting NiO's activity for effectively reducing paracetamol (PM) drugs. The improved catalytic property is attributed to an electron relay effect, while the strong electromagnetic fields generated by irradiated Ag nanoparticles facilitate the concentration of PM molecules at active sites, leading to accelerated reaction rates. NiO-SNP2 demonstrates remarkable PM degradation: 97 % in tap water and 82.6 % in deionized water within 10 min, demonstrating its catalytic effectiveness. The plasmonic SNP mechanism in NiO-SNP1 nanocomposites enhances photocatalytic efficiency by up to 90 %, owing to efficient charge separation and transfer, resulting in a notable 1.5-fold increase in PM degradation. The degradation kinetics follow a pseudo-first-order model, with rate constants (k) ranging from approximately 0.059 to 0.6104 min⁻1, underscoring the crucial role of Ag nanoparticles in enhancing photocatalytic activity and degradation efficiency. Catalysis and visible light photocatalysis are significantly improved with increasing concentrations of NiO and SNP, respectively. This research could inspire a new approach to transforming traditional metal catalysis into plasmonic-metal catalysis.

Review On Strategies For the Design and Synthesis of Flower‐Like Bi2WO6 and BiOX (X=F, Cl, Br, I) Composites for Photocatalytic Environmental Remediation

AbstractIn latest events, water pollution has posed an immense threat, and its sustainable treatment is a topic of concern. Among myriad of water treatment, research community has lensed towards sustainable heterogeneous photocatalysis especially, inorganic semiconductors. Bismuth tungstate a pristine Aurivillius compound with unique crystal structure, exceptional photochemical stability, and strong redox abilities but minimum visible light absorption and quick carrier recombination are its caveats, these caveats are circumvented by synthesizing BiOX (X=F, Cl, Br and I) composites with surface modifiers, doping with hetero atoms (metals and non‐metals), construction of the heterojunction and amalgamation of carbon materials. The heart of this review is strategic engineering of flower‐like morphology photocatalyst synthesis and optical properties, it also discusses the charge transfer kinetics, photocatalytic performance, and durability. The flower‐like morphology highlighted in this review is due to its ability to harvest light, providing larger specific surface area which introduces more active sites and efficient excitons generation. The comprehensive tabulated data in this review will help the actively engaged research community in Bismuth heterogenous photocatalysis. It also sheds light on the future view of environmental remediation via photocatalytic developments.

Facile synthesis of Ag2S cocatalyst modified Zn0·6Cd0·4S for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

The investigation and development of straightforward methods for fabricating efficient photocatalysts are critical for converting solar energy to fuel. This study reports the successful synthesis of Ag2S/Zn0·6Cd0·4S (AZC) composites featuring zinc vacancies using a simple, two-step hydrothermal approach. These composites, characterized by nanoparticle morphologies, demonstrated strong visible light absorption, high photocurrent density and exceptional charge-transfer efficiency. Notably, the 0.5% AZC composite showcased outstanding hydrogen production (18.77 mmol g−1 h−1) and stability, achieving an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 23.8%. The remarkable photocatalytic activity of this composite is attributed to the inclusion of Ag2S serving as an electron trapping cocatalyst, and the presence of zinc vacancies. Furthermore, the study elucidates the underlying photocatalytic mechanism of the 0.5% AZC composite.
