Advanced Identification and Characterization of Listeria Species in Egyptian Local Soft Cheese

Aims: one of the most important foodborne microorganisms is the Gram’s positive environmental wide spread Listeria spp. As the Listeria may be considered a public health concern so there is in needing to rapid, precise and reliable diagnosis of the organism in consumed food. The present study aimed to survey the presence of Listeria spp. among two popular consuming Egyptian white soft cheese using advanced biochemical, antibiotic susceptibility and molecular techniques.
 Methodology: Listeria spp. was investigated in 155 samples of two white soft cheeses (70 kareish cheese and 85 Damietta cheese) collected from street vendors and retail markets in Giza. The existence of Listeria spp. was tested through cultural and the identification was confirmed biochemically by Vitek2 compact system as well as molecular identification via diplex real time PCR using species specific primers.
 Results: The results of the study revealed the isolation of two Listeria spp. in a total number of 22 from155 samples (14.19%); 14 isolate out of 70 (20%) Kareish cheese while 8 isolates out of 85 (9.4%) Damietta cheese's samples. The 22 Listeria spp. isolates were differentiated into L. innocua 15 (68.18%), and L. monocytogenes 7 (31.81%) also their antimicrobial susceptibility was declared using advanced Vitek-2 compact system. The two Listeria spp. isolates were definitely confirmed by using diplex DNA hybridization real PCR technique.
 Conclusion: Soft raw milk based cheese is a popular food in Egypt and looked on as a risk for foodborne bacteria contamination. The data of this study pointed out that there is a potential risk of infection with Listeria, especially the public health concern L. monocytogenes. The current study presented Vitek-2 compact system as advanced technique for not only for identification and differentiation of Listeria strains but also for their antimicrobial susceptibility. Furthermore the using of diplex real PCR technique gives a chance for quick and precise identification.

The Role of Accounting Information in Shop Floor Management Control: evidence from a Retail Chain in the UK

Abstract: Purpose- This paper investigates an intensive case study about a small branch of a high street retail company in the United Kingdom. Theoretically, it is based on Burawoy's (1979) labour process theory 'Manufacturing Consent' and Actor-Network Theory (1992) by John Law. This study has addressed the urged for more research on accounting information in managerial control (Hall,2010). The effort has been given to explore the role of accounting information and gaming at shopfloor management.

Cancer Loyalty Card Study (CLOCS): protocol for an observational case-control study focusing on the patient interval in ovarian cancer diagnosis.

IntroductionOvarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer in women worldwide, and about 1 in 5 women with ovarian cancer do not receive treatment, because they are too unwell by the time they are diagnosed. Symptoms of ovarian cancer are non-specific or can be associated with other common conditions, and women experiencing these symptoms have been shown to self-manage them using over-the-counter medication. Results from a recent proof-of-concept study suggest there may be an increase in the purchases of painkillers and indigestion medication 10–12 months before ovarian cancer diagnosis. We propose a case–control study, as part of a larger project called the Cancer Loyalty Card Study (CLOCS), to investigate whether a significant change in medication purchases could be an indication for early signs of ovarian cancer, using data already collected through store loyalty cards.Methods and analysisUsing a retrospective case–control design, we aim to recruit 500 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer (cases) and 500 women without ovarian cancer (controls) in the UK who hold a loyalty card with at least one participating high street retailer. We will use pre-existing loyalty card data to compare past purchase patterns of cases with those of controls. In order to assess ovarian cancer risk in participants and their purchase patterns, we will collect information from participants on ovarian cancer risk factors and clinical data including symptoms experienced before diagnosis from recruited women with ovarian cancer.Ethics and disseminationCLOCS was reviewed and approved by the North West-Greater Manchester South Research Ethics Committee (19/NW/0427). Study outcomes will be disseminated through academic publications, the study website, social media and a report to the research sites that support the study once results are published.Trial registration numberISRCTN 14897082, CPMS 43323, NCT03994653.

Comparing supermarket loyalty card data with traditional diet survey data for understanding how protein is purchased and consumed in older adults for the UK, 2014\u201316

BackgroundOur ability to understand population-level dietary intake patterns is dependent on having access to high quality data. Diet surveys are common diet assessment methods, but can be limited by bias associated with under-reporting. Food purchases tracked using supermarket loyalty card records may supplement traditional surveys, however they are rarely available to academics and policy makers. The aim of our study is to explore population level patterns of protein purchasing and consumption in ageing adults (40 years onwards).MethodsWe used diet survey data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (2014–16) on food consumption, and loyalty card records on food purchases from a major high street supermarket retailer (2016–17) covering the UK. We computed the percentage of total energy derived from protein, protein intake per kg of body mass, and percentage of protein acquired by food type.ResultsWe found that protein consumption (as the percentage of total energy purchased) increased between ages 40–65 years, and declined thereafter. In comparison, protein purchased in supermarkets was roughly 2–2.5 percentage points lower at each year of age. The proportion of adults meeting recommended levels of protein was lowest in age groups 55–69 and 70+. The time of protein consumption was skewed towards evening meals, with low intakes during breakfast or between main meals. Meat, fish and poultry dominated as sources of protein purchased and consumed, although adults also acquired a large share of their protein from dairy and bread, with little from plant protein.ConclusionsOur study provides novel insights into how protein is purchased and consumed by ageing adults in the UK. Supermarket loyalty card data can reveal patterns of protein purchasing that when combined with traditional sources of dietary intake may enhance our understanding of dietary behaviours.

Microbiological Risks and Portion Analyse of Stuffed Mussels Sold in Istanbul

In this study, stuffed mussels were collected from 50 selling points in Istanbul, consist of street vendors (n=38) and retail shops (n=12), analyzed microbiologically and weighted per portion. Mean Total Aerobic Count result was 7.38±1.01 log10 cfu/g among the samples. Coliform was isolated from 44% of samples (2.85±0.57 log cfu/g), Escherichia coli from 12% of samples (3.76±0.71 log cfu/g), Staphylococcus aureus from 4% (4.15±0.30 log cfu/g), Bacillus cereus in 2% (2.78 log cfu/g) and Bacillus licheniformis in 4% (3.18±0.08 log cfu/g) of samples. Listeria ivanovii was isolated from 2% of samples (in 25 g). No Clostridium spp., Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes were detected. Level of Staphylococcus spp. (S. aureus + S. epidermidis) contamination was significantly higher in the retail shop (P <0.05). The mean portion per stuffed mussel was 16.78±5.62 g. Except for the result of Staphylococcus spp., microbiological analyses and a gram of portions did not show a significant difference between retail shops and street vendors (P >0.05). However, an inappropriate level of S. aureus contamination in retail shops remain a food safety gap. Furthermore, the mean results of portions are assumed to be used in predictive microbiology studies.

Prevalence and virulence of Vibrio species isolated from raw shrimp from retail markets in Reynosa, Mexico.

In this study, the prevalence of Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio mimicus, Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio spp. in shrimp from retail markets in Reynosa, Mexico was determined. A total of 765 isolates, identified as Vibrio spp. (59·1%), V. cholerae (17·8%), V. mimicus (6·7%) and V. parahaemolyticus (4·6%), were obtained; V. vulnificus was not detected. Most of the strains were isolated from supermarkets (48·1%), followed by street vendors (37·3%) and retail stores (14·6%). Moreover, several virulence genes were identified in V. cholerae: toxR (100%), OmpU (76·5%), hlyA (76·5%), VPI (19·9%) and tcpA (5·1%); in V. mimicus: vmh (100%), wzb (74·5%), pilF (54·9%), VPI (43·1%), OmpU (29·4%) and tdh (9·8%); and in V. parahaemolyticus: toxR (100%), tlh (100%), VP1680 (51·4%) and VPI (11·4%). These results show the low safety of this food and the potential risk to consumers' health, since this product in Mexican cuisine is sometimes served raw or semi-cooked. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study shows the prevalence of pathogenic Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio mimicus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolated from shrimp that is commercialized in Reynosa city. This could represent a risk to consumers' health, since outbreaks related to shrimp contaminated with Vibrio have been previously reported. Additionally, shrimp fishing has a major role in Mexico's economy.

Urban morphotypes and functional diversity of city environment

On the example of the urban space of one of the largest Russian cities, Samara, various environmental morphotypes are analyzed for: mixed use in the ratio of residential and service functions; the nature of the service objects, the spatial organization of the contact of public areas with the building surrounding them. Through the analysis of rental rates of commercial premises in different parts the connection between the demands for different morphotypes of the city is considered. It is found out that regardless of the density of the population in the study area, the development of public activities in the territories depends on the spatial organization of the urban environment: street arrangement, convenience of service function’s access. Commercial demand for premises serves is an indicator of the quality of organization of public spaces of streets. Densely populated areas with chaotic development that does not form a street front are deprived of socially active spaces with developed street retail, while less populated areas with a high-density street network and quarter-perimeter buildings form active spatially organized traffic of people that support the development of street retail.

To Ban or Not to Ban? A Critique of Paternalism

A ban on opening a new supermarket is evidence that people want a new supermarket, for if they did not there would be no need for a ban. The same is true of chlorinated chicken, gambling machines and many other products and activities that we are told need to be banned or restricted.It is true that government should stop people doing certain things, but not impose restrictions upon other activities. In the classical liberal view, restrictions can only be justified when there is harm to third parties. If there is no third-party harm, then restricting liberty is mere paternalism or protectionism. This paper presents a clear and precise set of rules for deciding whether a curtailment of liberty is legitimate or not. The argument is illustrated through a series of current examples, including climate change, gambling, high street retail, obesity and the green belt.

Main street retail system: theoretical contributions drawn from the general systems theory

Objective:The overall purpose of this paper is to develop theoretical contributions to the understanding of the Main Street Retail agglomeration phenomenon, based on the General Systems Theory.Method/approach: This study is exploratory since it aims at gathering previous references and recognizing elements pertinent to the chosen subject. Main Results: The essay suggests three propositions for future research, and their composition could be stated as a general research question: “How the Main Street Retail can control the systemic entropy to increase the development of the social system in different levels of interaction and relationship?”. The investigation of this issue should shed more light about the growth and survival of the Main Street Retail system. Moreover, the search for a broader perspective in science becomes necessary, as noted by General Systems Theory.Theoretical contributions: Based on the a literature review on General Systems Theory, this paper is a theoretical essay which tries to bridge the existing gap between theory and applicability of the Systems Theory. It analyzed the Mains Street Retail system along the following three levels: Subsystem or Micro System level, Social Organization or Meso System level and Environmental or Macro System level.Relevance/Originality: This research offers theoretical perspective on General System Theory, Marketing System and the possible application on retail environment with focus on Main Street Retail.Managerial implications: This research offers theoretical perspective on General System Theory, Marketing System and the possible application on retail environment with focus on Main Street Retail. The Main Street is important social organization for providing a social development in local business but their survival is directly related to the system below (micro) and above (macro). The micro system should ensure sustainability of the entrepreneurial business through interaction and relationship of their internal marketing functions. In addition, it’s necessary to maintaining control over business performance.

Cigarette Sales Promotion Pattern and Smoking Behavior of Sellers in Mulawarman University, Samarinda

Mulawarman University have the largest number of students in Kalimantan (37,000). This amount has the potential to be smokers supported by the non-realization of non-smoking areas in all faculties and the high circulation of cigarettes through the mobilization of street vendors and retail franchises. The purpose of this study was to find out the dominant factors influencing cigarette sales in the environment of street vendors in Mulawarman University. The design of this study is quantitative research to analyze the correlation between cigarette sales figures, types or brands of cigarettes, attributes and types of cigarette promotion media, knowledge and smoking behavior of street vendors. Statistical analysis on ordinal data using the Spearman analysis test, nominal data using contingency coefficients and ratio data using Pearson analysis. The results of this study are the average cigarette sales per day is 311 cigarettes with the highest cigarette sales is 1760 cigarettes, the type of cigarette promotion media is (55%) banners. The variables that have correlation to cigarette sales are types of cigarette sales places (p = 0.047, R = -0.257); the use of media promotion display (p = 0.002, R = 0.390) and profits from selling cigarettes in rupiah nominal (p = 0.000, R = 0.557). Limiting cigarette promotions around the campus and increasing regulation of non-smoking areas at the maximum is needed.

Repurchase Intention Conditioned to Economic Confidence in Main Street Retail Districts

The crisis of confidence in Brazil creates a scenario that can influence relations between the attributes of the retailer and consumers. Consumer assessments can be adjusted to economic confidence, leading to more utilitarian values or decreasing the hedonic value of buying experiences. Thus, it is necessary to understand the intervention of economic confidence in the responses of consumers to the attractiveness factors of a retail cluster. We conducted an analysis on the extent to which attribute assessments and crowding perception, hedonic and utility value, and satisfaction, interact with economic confidence, and satisfaction to influence performance and repurchase intention. A survey was carried out in the purchase environment with 300 consumers (region of Rua 25 de Marco, Sao Paulo). Hypotheses were tested by PLS and Process. The mediating role of the economic trust between hedonic value and satisfaction was evidenced, proving adjustment of the hedonic value with the decrease of confidence. Theoretical and practical contributions are discussed in the conclusions.

The Quest to End Modern Slavery: Metaphors in corporate modern slavery statements

This paper focuses on the modern slavery statements of three major UK high street retailers who are known for their relatively pro-active approach to the debate on corporate responsibility for ethical trading. Drawing on our earlier research in relation to metaphors in British newspaper reporting of modern slavery and human trafficking since 2000, we explore the metaphors that recur across the statements these companies have published in 2016, 2017 and 2018. These statements were published in accordance with the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015, which requires all commercial organisations operating in the UK, with a turnover greater than GBP 36 million, to publish an annual statement outlining the work done to assess and address (the risk of) modern slavery in their supply chains. We find that the metaphors used in these statements generally fail to acknowledge the agency of those workers affected by modern slavery and labour exploitation in a broader sense, the potential complicity of the retailers in sustaining an exploitative industry, and the underlying socio-economic factors that leave workers vulnerable to exploitation. We conclude that more needs to be done to account for the causes of modern slavery so that retailers can prevent rather than react to it.

Does the Choice of Brand Positioning Strategy Matter in the Creation of Brand Love? The Mediating Role of Brand Positioning Effectiveness

To understand how brand love can be created, this study examines the effect of brand positioning strategies (benefit brand positioning strategy, feature brand positioning strategy and surrogate brand positioning strategy) on brand love, by conceptualizing brand positioning effectiveness as a mediator. The proposed conceptual model was empirically studied with the responses of 607 young consumers from private universities in Pakistan. This study finds evidence of complementary mediation of brand positioning effectiveness between brand positioning strategies, and brand love in the context of high street fashion retail brands. For the brand managers, this study implies that the development of an interpersonal consumer-brand bond can be developed by employing benefit brand positioning strategy, surrogate brand positioning strategy and feature brand positioning strategy. This, as a result, also indicates the effectiveness of all three of these brand positioning strategies.

Waste, dirt and desire: Fashioning narratives of material regeneration

The consumption of clothing fashioned from recycled textile fibre waste poses a challenge for buyers not simply due to fears of a loss of quality, but also to fears of ‘dirt’ and contagion. These concerns appear to reside in cast-off clothing’s intimate links with unknown bodies, and cultural perceptions of the recycling system’s ability to properly ‘clean’ these materials and transform them back again into textile fibres that can be worn again on the body. The fashion industry currently recycles less than 1% of its own cast-offs back into clothing, despite mainstream economists’ claims that keeping fibres in circulation for longer is not only environmentally sustainable but also economically advantageous: closed-loop business models secure resources in an increasingly competitive market still focused upon growth. Here it is argued that the drive towards a more circular fashion system in Europe brings competing frameworks of purity into the same field, where cultural values ascribed to clothing hygiene and cleanliness are confronted with the goals of sustainability and resource effectiveness. In their attempts to re-make post-consumer clothing fibres back into desirable fashion, manufacturers and retailers are trying to negotiate these complex value systems, with variable results. This article explores three, very different, contexts where manufacturers and retailers experiment with adding value to fashion made from mechanically-recycled wool: an ethical fashion trade fair in Berlin, textile specialists working with a British high street retailer, and a yarn wholesaler in Prato, Italy. The examples reveal the current precarity of the symbolic re-ordering of recycled textile materials as ‘clean and green’ rather than ‘old and dirty’, and how corporate actors struggle to re-shape their narratives of material sustainability at this increasingly visible frontier.

What is the value of ‘main street’? Framing and testing the arguments

An investigation of the impact of 2017 business rates revaluation on independent high street retailers in the north of England

Purpose Many national retailers have complained about increases in business rates tax bills since the 2017 revaluation. What impact has the 2017 business rates revaluation had on independent high street retailers in market towns in the north of England? The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The study uses Valuation Office Agency rating list data to determine rateable value and business rates payable for independent high street retailers in eight northern market towns either side of the 2017 rating revaluation. The data were analysed using business rates matrices to reveal the impact of the new rating list on independent retailers in the eight locations. Findings Analysis reveals that the majority of independent retailers in the northern market towns sampled have experienced reductions in both the rateable value of their premises and business rates payable. Increase in the rates relief threshold has extended relief to almost half of the independent retailers in the study, most of whom receive 100 per cent relief. Practical implications Charity shops receive at least 80 per cent rates relief which means they are able to afford to pay higher rents. This “sets the tone” for landlords setting market rents in that location which are then used as comparable evidence by the VOA when determining rateable values at revaluation further polarising the gap between rate payers and those to are exempt. Originality/value Focussing on independent retailers on high streets in markets towns in north of England, this study provides an alternative perspective to the orthodox view of business rates revaluations having a negative impact on retailers.

Effect of the use of social media in trust, loyalty and purchase intention in physical stores

ABSTRACTThis research evaluates the effect of the use of social media on consumer trust, loyalty and purchase intention in physical stores. We used six constructs in a structural model: a consumer’s use of social media, company-generated communication in social media, user-generated communication on social media, trust, loyalty and purchase intention. We considered 406 valid respondents in the analysis. The results suggest that the use of social media, company and user-generated communication positively affects trust of the physical store. Trust, in turn, has a direct positive effect on consumer loyalty to the store, and both trust and loyalty have positive impacts on a consumer’s purchase intention. We note the impact of the use of social media on purchase intention in physical stores, through the building of trust and loyalty with the store, as a fundamental element in the definition and implementation of a successful marketing strategy by high street retailers.

Who Is Serving Us? Food Safety Rules Compliance Among Brazilian Food Truck Vendors.

The rise of food trucks as an eating out option requires knowledge of this sector. Balancing the reality of the food truck sector with access to safe food should guide actions and public policies to cater to its peculiarities. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the Brazilian food truck vendors’ profile regarding their socioeconomic status and compliance with food safety rules. From the 118 food truck vendors registered in the Brazilian Federal District, 30% (n = 35) participated in the study. We conducted structured interviews from December 2017 to April 2018. We ranked compliance levels according to a five-point Likert scale based on calculated compliance scores. The interviews revealed that food truck vendors were mostly married males, who had completed at least a tertiary education level, and wanted to start up their own businesses. The compliance levels depict good compliance with food safety rules (overall compliance (OC)-score = 0.69, on a 0 to 1 scale). The food trucks assessed in this study distinguished themselves from the street food and food retail sectors due to their operational structure and the complexity of food production processes. Those particular features should be considered to ensure adequate and effective sanitary control and inspections, as well as to reduce the probability of microbial growth and food contamination and the consequent risk of foodborne illnesses.
