Review: Control of Strawberry Aphids (Chaetosiphon Fragaefolii; Aphididae) Through Sustainable Natural Materials In Strawberry (Fragaria X Ananassa) Cultivation

Aphids (Chaetosiphon fragaefolii; Aphididae) are one of the pests that attack Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) plants that can transmit viruses infecting Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) plants. Symptoms caused by Chaetosiphon fragaefolii include sooty mold, stunted growth and twisted, curly and yellow stems. Farmers will experience losses caused by aphids (Chaetosiphon fragaefolii) symptoms such as a significant reduction in strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) yields. The purpose of this literature study examines how to control aphids (Chaetosiphon fragaefolii) that attack Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) plants through natural ingredients. The results for controlling aphids (Chaetosiphon fragaefolii) through natural materials are 4, namely: Entomopathogenic fungi: Beaubevia bassiana and Metarizium sp., Parasitoids: Aphelinus varipes, Predators: family Syrphidae, family Asilidae, Orius insidiosus, Cycloneda sanguinea, Eriopis connexa and Coleomegilla quadrifasciata, Organic Pesticides: neem leaves with a concentration of 35 (g/l water) and mortality of 8.76 heads, while papaya leaves use a concentration of 30 ml/liter of water.

Synthesis of New Fatty N-Acylamino Amides from 3,4-Dichloroaniline with Crop Protection Activity

A series of biologically active N-acylamino amides were synthesized from readily available amino acids and common fatty acids from oil seeds, including the pharmacophoric group in the family of herbicides propanil, linuron, and diuron. The esterification followed by N-acylation with long-chain fatty acids was carried out with O-(benzotriazole-1-yl)-N,N,N’,N’-tetramethyluronium tetrafluoroborate (TBTU) as activating agent. The N-acylamino esters were synthesized and isolated in good yields (70-98%), which after the hydrolysis step, provided the N-acylamino acids. Finally, new N-acylamino amides were obtained from the reaction with 3,4-dichloroaniline in the presence of TBTU and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA), in yields between 24-83%. Bioassays were conducted against arthropod strawberry pests Chaetosiphon fragaefolii, Duponchelia fovealis, and Drosophila suzukii, without any registered compound for use in strawberry crops in Brazil. The bioassay studies showed promising results, with mortality percentages ranging from 20-80%, and the best relative mortality by N-oleyl glycinamide, suggesting a possible fatty chain-amino acid synergistic bioactivity. Overall, this study provides an efficient and sustainable method for synthesizing biologically active N-acylamino amides from abundant natural sources, with potential applications in the development of ecofriendly agrochemicals.

The potential of the hoverfly Allograpta exotica as a biological control agent of the strawberry aphid Chaetosiphon fragaefolii

AbstractSyrphid larvae are effective biological control agents in numerous crops due to their voracity, and they are used in both augmentative and conservation‐based strategies within horticultural systems. This study conducted laboratory trials to ascertain the predation rate of Allograpta exotica (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Syrphidae) on Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and to compare it with the predation rate on Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), another significant aphid species affecting strawberries. Additionally, field trials were conducted to assess the reduction in the field population of C. fragaefolii achieved by A. exotica within strawberry crops. We observed a significant increase in the number of aphids consumed by a larva as it progressed from first‐instar larvae (L1) to third‐instar larvae (L3). Specifically, the mean aphid consumption by second‐instar larvae (L2) was nearly 11 times higher for C. fragaefolii and 10 times higher for A. gossypii compared to L1. Furthermore, the consumption rate of L3 larvae was approximately 2 times higher for both aphid species compared to L2. In laboratory conditions, A. exotica larvae significantly reduced the number of both aphid species, but the control on A. gossypii was higher than on C. fragaefolii. The results of the field experiment demonstrated that the predatory hoverfly A. exotica significantly reduced the numbers of C. fragaefolii compared to the control treatment, highlighting its potential as a promising biological control agent in strawberry crops.

Sugar and pollen supply enhances aphid control by hoverflies in strawberry

Larvae of many hoverfly species (Diptera: Syrphidae) are efficient aphid predators, while the adults feed on pollen and nectar. Strawberry crops can be infested by several aphid species, such as the strawberry aphid Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell) and the potato aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), both of which can cause economic damage. Protected cultivation of strawberry seems to be ideal for introducing biological control agents that depend on flower resources, but the nectar and pollen provided by the crop may not be the most suitable for all flower-dependent insects. In this study, we evaluated the biocontrol potential of hoverflies released preventively or curatively against the potato aphid in strawberry in two separate greenhouse experiments and the effect of adding sugars and pollen on their control efficacy.In the curative experiment, Eupeodes corollae (Fabricius) and Sphaerophoria rueppellii (Wiedemann) were released and supported with flowering plants of Fagopyrum esculentum Moench (buckwheat). Both species reduced the aphid numbers significantly compared to the control treatment.In the preventive experiment, we tested three syrphid species, Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer), S. rueppellii, and E. corollae, in the presence and absence of additional food sources (sugar solution and pollen). All three syrphid species reduced the aphid population to a similar extent, but only in the presence of additional food sources. This study shows that hoverflies perform better in strawberry crops when adults have access to different supplementary food sources.

The brown lacewing Micromus angulatus: A new predator for the augmentative biological control of aphids

Aphids are notorious pests that pose significant challenges for their management in many economically important crops. While various predators and parasitoids are available for the augmentative biological control of aphids, there is a need to develop new species with unique characteristics that can be integrated into existing biological control programs. Micromus angulatus (Neuroptera: Hemerobiidae) is a brown lacewing with great potential for the biological control of aphids. Unlike the green lacewings used currently in biological control, both the larvae and adults of M. angulatus are predatory. In this greenhouse study, we compared M. angulatus to the well-established species Chrysoperla carnea as predators of Myzus persicae in sweet pepper and Chaetosiphon fragaefolii in strawberry. In sweet pepper, releases of M. angulatus eggs, C. carnea eggs or M. angulatus adults led to aphid reductions of 99.6%, 90.5%, and 87.1%, respectively, compared to the control. In another experiment in sweet pepper, preventative releases of M. angulatus adults (i.e., two days before the plants were infested with aphids) resulted in aphid numbers reduced by 98.8%. In strawberry, aphid numbers were reduced by 97.4%, 85.2%, and 60.3% in the C. carnea eggs, M. angulatus eggs, and M. angulatus adults treatments, respectively. Overall, our study highlights the potential of M. angulatus as an effective biological control agent against aphids in sweet pepper and strawberry. Moreover, our results suggest the possibility of releasing M. angulatus adults either preventatively or curatively for the suppression of aphid populations.

A Novel, Divergent Member of the Rhabdoviridae Family Infects Strawberry.

Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) is the most important berry crop worldwide and viruses pose a constant threat to the industry. In this communication, we describe a novel virus in the family Rhabdoviridae referred to as strawberry virus 3 (StrV-3). The virus does not show significant homology when compared with recognized rhabdoviruses and, therefore, the establishment of a new genus should be considered. A triplex reverse-transcription PCR test was developed and successfully employed in a survey of the National Clonal Germplasm Repository Fragaria collection. A CRISPR-Cas-based protocol was also developed and shown to detect the virus in as little as 1 fg of total RNA, a protocol to be used in the detection of the virus in candidate G1 plants. The strawberry aphid (Chaetosiphon fragaefolii) was evaluated-alas, unsuccessfully-as a potential vector of the virus. This work broadens our understanding of the family Rhabdoviridae and assists in the quest of releasing plant material free of viruses.

Dual Action of Beauveria bassiana (Hypocreales; Cordycipitaceae) Endophytic Stains as Biocontrol Agents against Sucking Pests and Plant Growth Biostimulants on Melon and Strawberry Field Plants.

Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) can colonize plant tissues and serve crops not only as biopesticides but also as biostimulants that promote plant growth and trigger defense mechanisms. In this context, field trials were conducted evaluating two commercial strains of the entomopathogen Beauveria bassiana (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae), GHA (Botanigard) and PPRI 5339 (Velifer® ES) and a wild strain (AP0101) isolated from Achaia, Greece. The three strains were investigated in the field for their endophytic effects on melon Cucumis melo (Cucurbitales: Cucurbitaceae) and strawberry Fragaria sp. (Rosales: Rosaceae) plants and in particular for their ability to colonize plant tissues, control infestations of sucking insects Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphididae), Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), and improve plant growth parameters (plant height, number of flowers and fruits). All experimental fungal strains successfully colonized both plants. A significant decrease in the aphid and thrip populations was observed in the treated plants compared to the untreated control. As for plant growth, the number of flowers and fruits was significantly increased in plants treated with B. bassiana strains AP0101 and PPRI 5339. Our results clearly indicate that fungal endophytes can efficiently act as dual action agents demonstrating both insecticidal and growth-promoting effects.

Transmission of Diverse Variants of Strawberry Viruses Is Governed by a Vector Species.

Advances in high-throughput sequencing methods have boosted the discovery of multistrain viral infections in diverse plant systems. This phenomenon appears to be pervasive for certain viral species. However, our knowledge of the transmission aspects leading to the establishment of such mixed infections is limited. Recently, we reported a mixed infection of a single strawberry plant with strawberry mottle virus (SMoV), strawberry crinkle virus (SCV) and strawberry virus 1 (StrV-1). While SCV and StrV-1 are represented by two and three molecular variants, respectively, SmoV has three different RNA1 and RNA2 segments. In this study, we focus on virus acquisition by individual adult aphids of the Aphis gossypii, Aphis forbesi and Chaetosiphon fragaefolii species. Single-aphid transmission trials are performed under experimental conditions. Both different viruses and individual virus strains show varying performances in single aphid acquisition. The obtained data suggests that numerous individual transmission events lead to the establishment of multistrain infections. These data will be important for the development of epidemiological models in plant virology.

Effects of strawberry resistance and genotypic diversity on aphids and their natural enemies

Ecological theory hypothesizes that plant trait diversity may be as important as the presence of specific functional traits (e.g., resistance) for the herbivore and predator communities within a population. We used experimental populations of wild woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca) to test whether the degree of plant genotypic diversity and/or the existence of specific resistance traits play a role in the host plant’s community structure specifically, the community of generalist and specialist aphids and their natural enemies. In 2019, we studied the aphid abundance and relative predator abundance in an experimental field site in Alnarp, Southern Sweden; the field consisted of plots planted with combinations of 20 different wild strawberry genotypes. These strawberry genotypes were previously identified as either susceptible to or resistant against the herbivorous beetle (Galerucella tenella). Two aphid species, Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (specialist) and the exotic Aphis gossypii (generalist) were found in the plots and of the two species A. gossypii was dominant. The abundance of the specialist aphid (C. fragaefolii) was highest in susceptible plots with high genotypic diversity, while the generalist (A. gossypii) was highest in plots with a mix of resistant and susceptible plants with high genotypic diversity. Anthocorid predators, developed significantly higher population densities in strawberry plots with high genotypic diversity. Overall, predator abundance showed a positive correlation with aphid abundance. These results show that the specific functional trait of resistance as well as plant diversity affected aphids. Knowledge about these effects can be important factors to consider when designing strawberry plantings less susceptible to aphids.

High Incidence of Strawberry Polerovirus 1 in the Czech Republic and Its Vectors, Genetic Variability and Recombination.

In total, 332 strawberry plants from 33 different locations in the Czech Republic with or without disease symptoms were screened by RT-PCR for the presence of strawberry polerovirus 1 (SPV1) and five other viruses: strawberry mottle virus, strawberry crinkle virus, strawberry mild yellow edge virus, strawberry vein banding virus, and strawberry virus 1. SPV1 was detected in 115 tested strawberry plants (35%), including 89 mixed infections. No correlation between symptoms and the detected viruses was found. To identify potential invertebrate SPV1 vectors, strawberry-associated invertebrate species were screened by RT-PCR, and the virus was found in the aphids Aphis forbesi, A. gossypii, A. ruborum, A. sanquisorbae, Aulacorthum solani, Chaetosiphon fragaefolii, Myzus ascalonicus, and several other non-aphid invertebrate species. SPV1 was also detected in aphid honeydew. Subsequent tests of C. fragaefolii and A. gossypii virus transmission ability showed that at least 4 h of acquisition time were needed to acquire the virus. However, 1 day was sufficient for inoculation using C. fragaefolii. In conclusion, being aphid-transmitted like other tested viruses SPV1 was nevertheless the most frequently detected agent. Czech SPV1 isolates belonged to at least two phylogenetic clusters. The sequence analysis also indicated that recombination events influence evolution of SPV1 genomes.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the strawberry aphid Chaetosiphon fragaefolii Cockerell, 1901 (Hemiptera: Aphididae) from California, USA

The aphid Chaetosiphon fragaefolii Cockerell, 1901 is an agricultural pest and known vector of strawberry viruses. To better understand its biology and systematics, we performed a genomic analysis on C. fragaefolii collected from Quinalt strawberry plants from Pacific Grove, Monterey county, California, USA using Oxford Nanopore and Illumina sequencing. The resulting data were used to assemble the aphids complete mitogenome. The mitogenome of C. fragaefolii is 16,108 bp in length and contains 2 rRNA, 13 protein-coding, and 22 tRNA genes (GenBank accession number LC590896). The mitogenome is similar in content and organization to other Aphididae. Phylogenetic analysis of the C. fragaefolii mitogenome resolved it in a fully supported clade in the tribe Macrosiphini. Analysis of the cox1 barcode sequence of C. fragaefolii from California found exact and nearly identical sequences to C. fragaefolii and Chaetosiphon thomasi Hille Ris Lambers, 1953, suggesting the two species are conspecific.

Sampling methods and metereological factors on pests and beneficial organisms in strawberries

We characterize the population dynamics of pests and beneficial organisms in strawberries to assess the impact of two meteorological factors (temperature and precipitation) and define the most appropriate method for monitoring insects in strawberries crop. Population dynamics were monitored weekly using the plant beat method and Möericke traps in Albion strawberries. Measurements were taken in organic strawberry farms over two growing seasons, from March 26, 2010 to August 23, 2010 (first season - 2009/2010) and from October 4, 2010 to March 21, 2011 (second season - 2009/2010) in the municipality of Pinhais, Paraná state, southern Brazil (25º25'S; 49º08'W). We collected a total of 7,971 pests and 1,987 beneficial organisms. The most abundant pests were Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in the first growing season and Tetranychus urticae (Koch) (Acari: Tetranychidae) in the second. Beneficial organisms from Acari, Araneae, and Hymenoptera parasitoids predominated in both seasons. Temperature and precipitation were the the primary climatic factor associated with the population variation of aphids. Populations of C. fragaefolii grew when the temperature was between 16°C and 25ºC. We found that plant beat was the fastest and most suitable method for strawberry pests monitoring since it captured insects that were effectively colonizing the plants. This study contributes to a better understanding of the entomofauna associated with cultivation of organic strawberry.

Exploring the factors involved in the absence of parasitism of Chaetosiphon fragaefolii by generalist parasitoids in strawberry

Chaetosiphon fragaefolii Cockerell (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a worldwide strawberry pest with scarce records of parasitoids for its control. The parasitization rate of two generalist parasitoids, Aphidius colemani Viereck and Aphidius matricariae Haliday, their behavior and aphid defensive behaviors were evaluated with Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) as a comparative host. Defensive endosymbionts were also surveyed. C. fragaefolii was never parasitized in simple-choice tests, whereas in preference tests both parasitoids chose A. gossypii over C. fragaefolii. No contacts of A. matricariae with C. fragaefolii were observed while A. colemani made more antennal contacts and “stings” on A. gossypii than on C. fragaefolii with the latter exhibiting less defensive behaviors against the parasitoid. The bacterium Acinetobacter sp. was detected in all samples of C. fragaefolii, but with an unknown function. Further research on the possible defensive role of the glandular hairs covering the body of this aphid, the role of chemical signals and the existence of defensive internal mechanisms against parasitoids could provide plausible explanations for the absence of parasitism found.

Evaluation of Various Sources of Viral Infection in Strawberry Fields of Quebec, Canada

The decline of cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne ex Rozier; Rosaceae) observed in the province of Quebec, Canada, between 2012 and 2014 was mostly caused by persistent viruses: strawberry mild yellow edge virus (SMYEV) (Potexvirus; Alphaflexiviridae) and strawberry crinkle virus (SCV) (Cytorhabdovirus; Rhabdoviridae); and semi-persistent viruses: strawberry mottle virus (SmoV) (Secoviridae), strawberry vein banding virus (SVBV) (Caulimovirus; Caulimoviridae), and strawberry pallidosis virus (SPaV) (Crinivirus: Closteroviridae) transmitted by insect vectors. The objective of this study was to determine the sources of viral contamination in commercial strawberry fields in Quebec. Specifically, we wished to 1) determine the prevalence of persistent viruses in winged strawberry aphid Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) specimens captured; 2) determine the prevalence of all viruses in wild strawberry Fragaria virginiana Miller plants near commercial plantings; and 3) evaluate the viral contamination of strawberry transplants obtained from nurseries and tested before and after planting in commercial strawberry fields. Results indicated high percentage (38%) of the aphids (n = 205) and high percentage (67%) of F. virginiana patches (n = 12) were infected by strawberry viruses. Ultimately, our results showed a low percentage (5%) of the plants from various nurseries (n = 56) were infected before planting, whereas a third (29%) of the healthy exposed plants in the fields (n = 96) became rapidly infected by insect vectors within a year of having been planted. This study provides significant insights on the relative importance of the various sources of contamination in Quebec strawberry fields: C. fragaefolii versus F. virginiana versus nurseries versus post-nursery infections through exposure to virus-carrying insects.

Performance of Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in Different Strawberry Cultivars.

The green aphid Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is one of the most important pests of strawberry production systems worldwide. One of the fundamental points for developing management strategies for this aphid is the understanding of its population growth since this allows predictions about future population peaks and which are the most appropriate hosts for its survival and reproduction. Thus, the goal of this study was to evaluate the biological and population growth parameters of C. fragaefolii in four strawberry cultivars (Albion, Aromas, Camarosa, and San Andreas). The highest survival of the nymph stage was observed in 'San Andreas' (87%) and the lowest in 'Camarosa' (43%). 'Albion' had the highest net reproductive rate (R0 = 6.39) and the mean time for the population to double in number (TD = 5.61), thus presenting the best reproductive parameters for C. fragaefolii. 'Camarosa' and 'Aromas' had the lowest R0 values (2.65 and 2.70, respectively) and the highest TD values (10.89 and 10.34, respectively). We conclude that antibiosis mechanisms are involved in the resistance process of 'Camarosa' to C. fragaefolii. The characterization and the use of resistant cultivars can be an essential strategy to assist aphid management.

Flight phenology and trap selection for monitoring potential viral vector Aphididae and Aleyrodidae (Hemiptera) in strawberry (Rosaceae) fields of Québec, Canada

AbstractStrawberry decline disease, predominantly viral in origin, was a serious threat to the strawberry (Fragaria x ananassaDuchesne ex Rozier; Rosaceae) fields of Québec, Canada, between 2012 and 2014. Our aim was to monitor the abundance and activity of the main insect vectors: the strawberry aphid,Chaetosiphon fragaefolii(Cockerell) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and the greenhouse whitefly,Trialeurodes vaporariorumWestwood (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). First, we compared the effectiveness of two trapping techniques, the yellow sticky trap and the yellow pan trap. Results showed that the sticky traps are more effective in capturing alates in flight. Second, we determined the peak flight period for each of the two vectors in several locations within the province of Québec. Results suggest that the peak abundance of wingedC. fragaefoliiis during the first two weeks of August, while the peak abundance ofT. vaporariorumis in the last two weeks of September. Overall trap captures also found 53 different species of winged aphids, and we documented a new distribution record on commercial strawberry fields in Québec,Aleyrodes spiraeoides(Quaintance) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). Species composition and significant information of flight periods will be useful for the management of virus-transmitting insects associated with strawberry decline disease in Québec.

Potential of predatory Neotropical ladybirds and minute pirate bug on strawberry aphid.

Laboratory trials were performed to determine the impact of three Neotropical predatory coccinellids (Cycloneda sanguinea, Eriopis connexa and Coleomegilla quadrifasciata) and a minute pirate bug (Orius insidiosus) on Chaetosiphon fragaefolii, an important strawberry aphid pest. The predation on C. fragaefolii nymphs and adults, as well as the time to the first attack of all predators were compared with predation on Aphis gossypii. Predator preferences for prey and aphid defensive behavior were also evaluated. Moreover, the effect of coccinellids on C. fragaefolii population growth was assessed in experimental greenhouse conditions. The predation rate varied among predators, being significantly lower for O. insidiosus than for the coccinellids. Consumption was higher on A. gossypii than on C. fragaefolii, regardless of the aphids developmental stage. The time to the first attack of all predators was longer in the presence of C. fragaefolii. Walking away and cornicle secretion were the most common antipredator behaviors of aphid against coccinellids and O. insidiosus, respectively. Coccinellids preferred A. gossypii over C. fragaefolii, while O. insidiosus showed indifference. Cycloneda sanguinea and E. connexa exhibited the highest suppression effect on the growth rate of C. fragaefolii. Thus, the four predators evaluated could contribute to reduce strawberry aphid populations, especially C. sanguinea and E. connexa.

Influence of Trichomes in Strawberry Cultivars on the Feeding Behavior of Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell) (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is the predominant aphid in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne) production systems in Brazil. This pest species directly damages the plants and is also responsible for spreading viruses. Further, C. fragaefolii often renders strawberry cultivation unviable, because of its high reproductive rate, as well as the large number of individuals generated through parthenogenesis. The present study aimed to (1) evaluate the feeding behavior of C. fragaefolii in four strawberry cultivars (Albion, Aromas, Camarosa, and San Andreas) and (2) identify the resistance factors associated with the number and type of trichomes in the cultivars, and also its effect on the feeding behavior of C. fragaefolii, using the electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique. The results revealed an intrinsic relationship between the number of trichomes on the cultivar and feeding behavior of C. fragaefolii. A higher number of trichomes, both tector and glandular, was observed in Albion compared to that of other cultivars, resulting in a longer no probing (Np) period per insect, and a longer Np phase. A relatively short phloem phase and ingestion time of the phloem sieve elements were also observed in Albion. These results suggest that the trichomes act as a physical barrier creating difficulties for C. fragaefolii to feed, thereby altering its feeding behavior in the four cultivars studied.

Spatio-temporal variation of strawberry aphid populations and their parasitoids

Aphids are common herbivores in the strawberry crop that can reduce plant vigor and fruit quality and also transmit viruses. Aphid species prefer diverse plant organs, which represent particular habitats of different quality for aphids and for the development of natural enemies’ populations. Different habitat units (young leaves, mature leaves, buds, flowers) of strawberry were sampled fortnightly during all seasons. We identified seven aphid species, namely Chaetosiphon fragaefolii, Aphis gossypii, and Macrosiphum euphorbiae, the most abundant. During the autumn, C. fragaefolli and M. euphorbiae were scarce and A. gossypii was denser on mature leaves, while during summer M. euphorbiae was absent. During the winter, C. fragaefolii predominated on buds and young leaves, A. gossypii on flowers, and both species on mature leaves. During the spring, C. fragaefolii was even more abundant on buds, A. gossypii predominated on mature leaves, and the three species were equally abundant on flowers and young leaves. Parasitoids emerged from A. gossypii, M. euphorbiae and Myzus persicae, but not from C. fragaefolii. Three Aphidius and two Aphelinus species were recovered. All primary parasitoid species emerged from A. gossypii, and secondary parasitoids emerged only from this aphid. Aphis gossypii parasitism on mature leaves was markedly higher in winter and summer than in autumn and spring. Parasitism of A. gossypii was independent of its density, and the number of parasitized aphids was never higher than six. Our results contribute to define the most appropriate sample unit to estimate aphid density of different species and provide information about seasonal natural parasitism.

Evaluation of Strawberry Genotypes for Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Strawberry Aphid) Preference

ABSTRACTThirty-one strawberry genotypes were evaluated for supporting the reproductive success of the strawberry aphid (Chaetosiphon fragaefolii), a vector of several strawberry viruses. A pure colony of C. fragaefolii was initiated from eggs collected from field strawberry leaves in Fall 2013. In Spring 2014 greenhouse-grown strawberry plants with four to five leaves were placed in screened cages (16 genotypes/cage) and five aphids were placed on each plant. After 30–32 days, the number of aphids in each of four developmental stages was counted on each plant. Total aphid numbers/plant ranged from a mean of 33 on Fragaria chiloensis CFRA 48 (PI 551459) to 279 on F. × ananassa ‘AAC Lila’. Cultivars with relatively low numbers of aphids included ‘Bounty’ (106 aphids), ‘Mira’ (114 aphids), and ‘Annapolis’ (115 aphids). This experiment, part of a larger project on aphids and virus diseases associated with the cultivated strawberry, will inform decisions in the strawberry breeding program.
